Episode 3
Another biggie! In the second of a two-part series, Sam (host of the Wild River podcast) shares a story that taught her about the importance of allowing yourself to feel emotions, especially ones that you feel ashamed or undeserving of. Sam shares about a series of sexually disempowering experiences she had in college, nearly a decade ago, and the lasting impact these “normal” experiences had on her expression.
Sam shares about a subtle but persistent feeling of being unsafe and unable to trust sexually, even within an amazing and supportive relationship, and her belief that there was just something wrong with her. She speaks about finally sharing memories of prior non-consensual sexual experiences she had been reluctant to revisit because she didn’t think they were “bad enough” to warrant negative emotions.
Sam discusses the difficulty in accepting emotions for experiences that have been normalized by society and explores the toxic culture of consent and drinking present across college campuses. She also shares about the power in reclaiming expression and pleasure, and her refusal to feel ashamed about these experiences or how she feels about them.
