I find the countryside of Namibia to be stunning and it was a place I'd wanted to visit for a long time. I got my wish at the end of 2019 when I volunteered with EHRA.
Namibia has the least rainfall of any sub-Saharan country and has some amazing attractions. These include the huge sand dunes along the Skeleton Coast, Etosha National Park, and (of course) the wildlife.
I spend a week or so in Swakopmond, on the coast, and enjoyed my time there. I was volunteering with EHRA who spend one week per fortnight tracking the local population of African Desert Elephants in the wild. This allows them to check their health and to see where they are going (and help the local people to live in harmony with them).
I mention that Namibia has a population of approximately 2.25 million and an area of roughly 825,000 sq kilometers. By comparison, France has an area of 551,000 squ km and Alaska an area of 1.72 million squ km (making Namibia roughly half the size).
If you would like to know more about the elephants, and maybe get involved in supporting EHRA, I recommend their website: ehranamibia.org
