In 2017 alone, an estimated 674,000 children were victims of abuse and neglect in the United States and over 1,000 of these children died from maltreatment. Collapsing ice shelves and calving of large icebergs in Greenland and Antarctica have recently become major drivers of sea level rise. The rapidity of these changes has come as a surprise, revealing major gaps in our understanding of how ice sheets respond to a changing climate. To a large extent, these gaps are due to the lack of measurements from the marine edge of glaciers - the Achilles' heel of glaciers. For over a decade, since the glaciers in Greenland began their retreat, Fiammetta Straneo and her group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have been probing the edge of massive calving glaciers in iceberg-choked fjords in Greenland using helicopters, icebreakers, fishing vessels, and autonomous vehicles. 2020 Sloan Research Fellow Nadia Polikarpova is an assistant professor at CSE, and a member of the Programming Systems group. She received her PhD. in computer science from ETH Zurich in 2014. She then spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Polikarpova's work spans the areas of programming languages and formal methods; in particular, she is interested in building practical tools and techniques that make it easier for programmers to construct secure and reliable software. Her agenda is to exploit the growing power of automated logical reasoning to build next-generation programming languages, in which the programmer simply states high-level system requirements---such as safety, security, or performance criteria---and the language infrastructure takes on the error-prone task of enforcing these requirements. Using water’s signature, the isotopic values for snow, rivers, and groundwater, Dr. Katie Markovich is developing an understanding of Chile’s water portfolio under different climate conditions. Across the tree of life, we can trace cancer vulnerabilities back to the origins of multicellularity. Cancer is observed in almost all multicellular phyla, including lineages leading to plants, fungi, and animals. However, species vary remarkably in their susceptibility to cancer. Amy Boddy (UCSB Integrated Anthropological Sciences Unit) discusses how this variation in cancer susceptibility is characterized by life history trade-offs, as cancer defense mechanisms are a major component of a body's maintenance. Ariana is a PhD student at UC San Diego, where she works with the Sysnet, CryptoSec, and CNS groups at UCSD, as well as the Center for Evidence-based Security Research (CESR). She is advised by Geoff Voelker and Stefan Savage. As an undergrad, she started her academic journey in a security lab as an coder. She soon realized that the world of security would be an enthralling space that has repercussions for everyone that uses a computer today, and after doing some coding, she then moved more into a research-oriented role. She discovered that one of security's problems revolved around users and how users interact with our various security mechanisms; and what good are our security mechanisms if they fail to protect people? She then decided to dive into the intersection of usable security and empirical analysis, or how we can use environmental studies to determine user behavior, where is it going wrong, and how we can fix it. Proteins are nature’s machines, performing tasks from transforming sunlight into useable energy to binding oxygen for transport through the body. These functions depend on structural arrangement of atoms within the protein, which was, until recently, only possible to measure statistically, in easily crystallized samples via conventional X-ray diffraction. In the past decade, X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs), a new type of X-ray source, have begun to come online. Using ultra-bright, ultrafast X-ray pulses of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, this technology allows us to measure not only static pictures of protein structure but to record “molecular movies” of proteins in action. How often do you wonder about supercomputers and computers that "think" like humans? Supercomputers have been used to model complex scientific phenomena for decades. Now, scientists are entering a new era in computing, and computers are learning in a way that is similar to the human brain. With enough information, computers can learn to solve problems in novel and interesting ways. Specialized computers can even solve these problems using significantly less energy than "classical" computers. Particle accelerators have been revolutionizing discoveries in science, medicine, industry and national security for over a century. An estimated 30,000 particle accelerators are currently active around the world. In these machines, electromagnetic fields accelerate charged particles, such as electrons, protons, ions or positrons to velocities nearing the speed of light. Although their scientific appeal will remain evident for many decades, one limitation of the current generation of particle accelerators is their tremendous size, typically a mile long, and cost, which often limits access to the broader scientific community. Acceleration of electrons in plasmas, in particular in laser-driven plasmas, has been drawing considerable attention over the past decade. Angelique Taylor is a PhD student in the Healthcare Robotics Lab at the Computer Science and Engineering Department at UC San Diego. Angelique completed two Bachelor's degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she worked on machine learning research and developed an interest in learning algorithms. Since then, she has become interested in machine learning methods that can be used for interactive agents, leading her to focus on research in human-robot interaction.
