Working Hard

Laney Crowell is a founder I’ve wanted to speak to for such a long time, so I knew I had to pin her down on my trip to New York. 

She founded beauty brand Saie in 2019 after a five year stint at Estee Lauder that made her want to disrupt the industry, and to Saie (pardon the pun)  it’s gone from strength to strength is an understatement. Laney’s career though was not an obvious entrepreneurial path - she started out on film sets, entered into the world of new york magazines, and even interviewed to be Anna Wintour’s assistant 7 times before landing what her dream role, leading social & eventually global communications for Estee Lauder. It was a big job, but she wanted even bigger, more disruptive things, which ultimately led her to Saie.

We’ve had a lot of entrepreneurs on this podcast, many are in the midst of growing their company. But Ankur Nagpal has been there done that, got the millions.

Episode 100!! We've made it!!

I truly cannot believe that we’ve made it to 100 episodes, but at the same time it still feels like the beginning. I’ve said it in pretty much every episode so far, but my aim for this was always to have interesting, advice-filled conversations, with fascinating people. When I started 100 episodes ago, I was frustrated that “life improvement” podcasts were either just positioned as health, or productivity, and how in fact it really stretches so much further than that. Candace Nelson is a living breathing example of how to turn your passion into profit. After quitting her career in investment banking, she had plans to go to business school, but changed them last minute to instead do what she called a Pastry MBA, and to hone her baking craft. She started Sprinkles Cupcakes from her small flat in 2005, nearly 20 years later, Candace has sold over 200m cupcakes from her bakeries and cupcake ATMs across the country. When I started the podcast I wanted it to be all about life improvement from every angle, not just the ones we're all taught about.

Dr Helen O’Neill is a leading expert in reproductive science, she’s a lecturer in reproductive and molecular genetics at University College London, she has a Masters in Prenatal Genetics and Fetal Medicine and a PhD in Stem Cell Biology. She is also the founder and CEO of Hertility Health, an award-winning bio-tech business specialising in fertility testing that has raised over £5 million since launch.

Fertility is obviously a hugely sensitive topic, but it’s also one that we never talk about for exactly that reason. Professor Steve Peters has more Olympic medals and world championships to his name than you can count, with accolades in sports from athletics to football, cycling and snooker. But here’s the catch, he hasn’t ever played these sports professionally. Katie has faced more than your average setbacks, and today she tells me about the tools she used to overcome £1.5 million in debt, a relationship breakdown and heartbreaking loss, and to come out the other side with a growing company and growing self-confidence. 

She says “I didn’t have the confidence in myself until life tested me and I had no choice.” Her story is incredible, and a real testament to the fact that sometimes you just have to put your “big girl pants on” and find your way through.

It is an understatement to say that John Amaechi has had a career that has taken him places.

Not only is he an Organisational Psychologist, an OBE, a New York Times Bestselling Author, a Fellow of the Institute of Science and Technology, a Professor of Leadership, a non-executive director of an FTSE 250 company and the founder of organisational psychology consultancy APS. 

He was also, more surprisingly, the first Briton to play professional basketball in the NBA league, a move which saw him leave his hometown of Stockport for the world of professional basketball aged just 18. And whilst playing, he was the first NBA player to come out as gay. Never afraid to stand up and speak out, his book made me question a lot of things I thought I knew about myself and the way I live and work.

Tasha Ghouri is a television personality, activist, dancer and model, most recognised for her stint on the 2022 Summer series of Love Island UK, with Tasha being the first deaf person to enter the Villa. 

Referring to being deaf as her ‘Superpower’, Tasha was born deaf - with her parents identifying her disability when she was just 12 months old - and wears a cochlear implant in her right ear. She launched her own podcast ‘Superpowers with Tasha’’ in February 2023, which focuses on normalising disabilities and explores what once made her feel like an outcast now being her greatest source of strength and community. 

Following her exit from Villa and over the last two years, Tasha became the first ever pre-loved brand ambassador for eBay and worked with the likes of brand ambassador for Ann Summers, Loreal Paris, and Essie. In 2021, she was praised for an ASOS campaign where she modelled for ASOS’ earrings wearing the implant and became a figurehead in the deaf community. In her own words, Rokeya Khanum has achieved the goals she once referred to as impossible acts.

Born to parents who moved from Bangladesh to East London, she was raised alongside her seven siblings and Rokeya has always been really honest about her childhood, opening up about her teen pregnancy at 17 years old where she was then made homeless, moving from hostel to hostel and barely affording the basic necessities. 

Fast forward to the present day and Rokeya is founder of the luxury clothing brand Khanum’s. Rokeya shares her incredible origin story, from initially spotting a gap in the market, to generating six figures in 7 months, all from what she viewed as a side hustle.

Now stocked in Harvey Nichols, taking the Middle East by storm and turning over 7 figures, Rokeya shares her success story from hardship. She talks about how she was determined to turn it around and exactly how she did that, after her journey on becoming a teenage mother to then going back into education and going to university to study law to realising she couldn't study law because she couldn't afford the LPC. Then working for a few years before she found herself unemployed for 18 months which led to her starting Khanum's. It really is an incredible story.

After hearing this, Rokeya is proof that you can always come back stronger from setbacks and build a future you are very much proud of. As Rokeya says herself, she is “turning pain into power and shattering those f’ing glass ceilings.”

Known for her hugely captivating story, writer, social media influencer and self titled ’Scammer’ Caroline Calloway doesn’t shy away from being controversial. 

Caroline started to build her online presence between 2013 and 2016, documenting her experience during her time at Cambridge university after dropping out of New York University. She rose to fame creating an Instagram following who were given ‘exclusive access’ into the life of Caroline Calloway and her adventures.

However, whilst she gained significant traction and a dedicated fan base which gave her followers a real insight into her life, she faced criticism for her often inconsistent accounts and stories. It was later revealed that alongside forging her place at Cambridge with fraudulent results, she had bought Instagram followers before building an actual audience online. 

In 2019, Caroline promised a memoir “And We Were Like: A Memoir” as part of a $500,000 book deal on the back of her internet popularity but the book never transpired, landing her in $100,000 of debt to the publisher. It was later alleged in a damning article published in 2019 by her university friend Natalie Beach that she was the brains behind the famous Instagram, revealing the apparent truth behind the book deal and uncovering Caroline’s adderall addiction. Just two days after the article was published, Caroline was told that her father had been found dead from suicide. 

Fast forwarding to present life, Caroline has now published her memoir “Scammer” giving a tell-all take into her life and answers some of the questions that are left from her controversies.

Positioning herself as the scammer, Caroline has used this to gain significant fame but how true is this? This episode gets behind the Instagram profile, looking into ‘who actually is Caroline Calloway?’ From following a similar path to me in attending an Oxbridge University and building a following at the same time to where our paths divided and how it went so horribly wrong. This episode cross examines her one-of-a-kind story as I try to work out the real story and whether she really is a scam artist at all.

Dr Frankie is an NHS Doctor, media and content creator who offers factual and relatable health advice in preventative medicine. 

A qualified doctor working on the frontline, Dr Frankie graduated with a degree in Medicine and Surgery in 2018. Creator of the online community Girl vs Cancer, and host of You, Me and the Big C, Lauren Mahon has launched a social media community with the aim of raising awareness and driving support towards women with cancer. Ella Mills is an award-winning author, entrepreneur and champion of plant based living. She was the founder of Deliciously Ella in 2012, a plant-based food & wellness platform sharing delicious ways to feel better. Prior to starting Delicious Ella in 2011, Ella was diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome as well as ehlers-danlos and mast cell activation disorder, which followed four months in and out of hospital. After being prescribed a cocktail of medication that had no effect Ella hit rock bottom, both physically and mentally.

Stephanie Miller, known online as Steph Claire Smith, is the COO and co-founder of Australian health and wellness app, Keep It Cleaner (KIC).

From Melbourne Australia, Steph started her career modelling at aged 7. After moving to America to pursue modelling as a career, Steph was exposed to the extremely toxic side of the industry, which led to disordered eating, negative body image and an unhealthy relationship with exercise. She was told to start smoking as it’s a good suppressant for feeling hungry, the best fruit to eat were apples as they fill you up the most, and if you need energy have a black coffee or a diet coke. Realising that living like this was massively impacting both her physical and mental health, Steph moved back to Australia, where she met her business partner Laura.

In 2015, Steph and Laura launched their first E-book ‘Keep It Cleaner’. They saw a gap in the market that was filled with a lot of fad diets, quick fixes and guilt around food. They wanted to take it back to basics and create a programme that makes you feel good and celebrate how a healthy lifestyle can be varied for everyone. Fast forward several years, and they’ve launched a KIC subscription platform filled with recipes and workouts, and have their own line of over 80 health food products stocked in supermarkets across Australia. Alongside her businesses, Steph also co-hosts the KIC podcast and in May 2021 gave birth to her beautiful son, Harvey.

Today I introduce to you Mez, a young, courageous refugee with an extraordinary story. When he was just 13 years old, Mez fled his home in Eritrea to escape some of the worst human rights conditions in the world, including forced military conscription and widespread persecution, starting a perilous journey as a child refugee across the world. For an entire year, Mez experienced the chaos and terror of refugee camps, experiencing extreme and treacherous conditions that would leave him scared and struggling to get enough to eat. The physical environment was equally as dangerous, almost killing him on multiple occasions; from almost starving while travelling across the Sahara desert, to surviving a boat capsize in the Mediterranean sea, to hiding underneath a Eurotunnel train to get to the UK. 

Since arriving safely in the UK with just the clothes on his back, Mez’s life has completely transformed for the better. Fostered by the family of Jaz O’Hara, who has also featured on my podcast, Mez has gone on to remarkably learn English, pass his GCSEs and inspire others with his truly humbling story. Now Mez aspires to follow his dreams of becoming a mechanic while still continuing to raise awareness of the ‘life, death and limbo’ of the refugee crisis.

Kwajo Tweneboa, known as the hero of social housing, is a remarkable 23-year-old campaigner demanding urgent reform in public-sector housing. Amid the housing crisis, Kwajo has emerged as an influential voice online for social housing tenants, known best for naming and shaming some of the largest accommodation associations in the UK.

Haunted by memories of his own housing hell, Kwajo joined the fight to improve conditions after his father, a care worker, died in their family home among a sea of cockroaches, mould and vermin. To make matters worse, just a week after his death Kwajo and his siblings were informed their tenancy contract had been evicted and therefore they must leave, in essence making them homeless. By some miracle, Kwajo and his family were allowed to stay, but for Kwajo this was understandably still not good enough - the conditions were still terrible.

Astounded by how he had been treated, Kwajo channelled his anguish and publicly exposed his landlord for breaching housing standards, ignoring calls and allowing his family to live in unimaginable filth. His first post went viral, reaching the attention of mainstream news and his housing association who eventually came to fix the problems. Kwajo now uses his online presence to help others share their housing horrors, becoming an active proponent for change in the UK - his campaign backed by nearly 62,000 followers on Twitter.

While a picture-perfect image for social housing still seems a world away, Kwajo's work on behalf of other tortured tenants has begun to make a real difference, his work sparking the conversation among significant journalists and MPs.

Karl Lokko is an ex-gang leader turned activist, campaigner, influencer and entrepreneur. Growing up on a tough estate swarming with gangs, Karl's childhood was far from plain-sailing, witnessing his first shooting when just 12 years old.

Though at the time this had felt shocking, within four years Karl found himself behind the trigger, eventually becoming the ringleader of his own notorious gang. Before he was even 16, Karl had already been shot at, cut on his face, stabbed in the chest and watched one of his best friends get killed.

Rapha has since been deemed a ‘marketing machine’ and over the years has mastered the art of community marketing, reliant on a strong membership programme that connects over 17,000 cyclists worldwide.

After an exceptional decade of sales Simon sold the business for a cool $200 million to the heirs of America’s retail giant, Walmart. Though he remains active at Rapha as a shareholder director and founder, in December 2021 Simon stepped down as CEO to allow his business to excel and be taken to the next level. I am also pleased to have him on board my own vision for TALA as an investor.

Candice Braithwaite is the Sunday Times best-selling author, presenter, journalist and founder of Make Motherhood Diverse: an initiative fighting for equal representation for mothers and parents. Initially a content creator and 'mumfluencer', Candice began posting on her socials in 2015 to document her journey of motherhood, keen to disrupt the flawless 'yummy mummy' facade online. The authenticity of her account resonated with thousands online, empowering her to write her first of three bestseller books.

During the episode, I had the opportunity to speak with Candice about her revelations about being a black woman and mother. She shed light on a shocking statistic; that black women are 5x more likely to die in childbirth than white women. Candice herself went through a particularly turbulent first birth experience, meaning she could not be present in the first six weeks of her daughter's life.

Throughout Candice's story, there is grit, courage and perseverance. Her experiences of systemic racism, her concerns as a black woman, and her view as to what must now be done are told with light-hearted humour and energy. Michelle Kennedy is the founder and CEO of Peanut, one of the fastest-growing social networking apps for women focusing on fertility, pregnancy, motherhood and menopause, which has raised $23m to to date. Peanut was founded in 2017 when Michelle had her first baby, serving as a gift to like-minded mothers during their most uncertain and uncanny moments.
