27th November, 1944, Palau Islands.
A 'God-Forsaken' island in the Pacific, Palau must be taken for the US strategy to reclaim the Philippines and push back the Japanese Empire.
After 2 months of bloodthirsty fighting, The US forces claimed the island for its airfield, but the controversy of its strategic value versus the horrific cost in men remains to this day.
Did the myopic, and partisan ambitions of a flawed top brass result in the shocking US casualty figures? Or was it the coral, caves, and suicidal sacrifice of the Japanese defenders?
Join James Holland, Al Murray, and John McManus as they dive deep into the 'Emperor's Island', as well as discussing the big names and conflicting interests of the campaign - such as Geiger, Puller, and Rupertus.

Listen to Legacy from Wondery and Goalhanger Podcasts. Each season, historian Peter Frankopan and broadcaster Afua Hirsch tell the wild stories of the most extraordinary men and women to have ever lived – and ask whether they have the reputation they deserve.
Winston Churchill is a towering figure in British history. Born into an aristocratic family, he began his career as a soldier and war correspondent before entering politics. He was an early champion of social reform, and became Prime Minister in 1940 during Britain's darkest hour in World War II. His stirring speeches and indomitable spirit in the face of insurmountable odds helped lead the Allies to victory.
However his views on empire and race have come under increased scrutiny in recent years, not to mention his role in the Bengal famine of 1943. Despite these controversies, Churchill remains a pivotal figure in 20th-century history, honoured for his crucial role in defeating fascism and shaping the post-war world.
In this clip, Churchill faces unimaginable horrors in Cuba - but what’s an English soldier doing in a Spanish colony?

From the bestselling author of Brothers in Arms comes the story of the most pivotal Allies campaign of World War II.
With the invasion of France the following year taking shape, and hot on the heels of victory in Sicily, the Allies crossed into Southern Italy in September 1943. They expected to drive the Axis forces north and be in Rome by Christmas. And although Italy surrendered, the German forces resisted fiercely and the swift hoped-for victory descended into one of the most brutal battles of the war.
Even though shipping and materiel were already being safeguarded for the D-Day landings, there were still huge expectations on the progress of the invading armies, but those shortages were to slow the advance with tragic consequences. As the weather closed in, the critical months leading up to Monte Cassino would inflict a heavy price for every bloody, hard fought mile the Allied troops covered.
Chronicling those dark, dramatic months in unflinching and insightful detail, The Savage Storm is unlike any campaign history yet written. James Holland has always recounted the Second World War at ground level, but this version telling brings the story vividly to life like never before. Weaving together a wealth of letters, diaries, and other incredible documents, Holland traces the battles as they were fought - across plains, over mountains, through shattered villages and cities, in intense heat and, towards the end, frigid cold and relentless rain - putting readers at the heart of the action to create an entirely fresh and revealing telling of this most pivotal phase of the war.

At just 13-years-old, following the Nazi invasion of Poland, Josef Lefkowitz and his father were separated from their family and taken to the Kraków-Plaszów concentration camp.
Josef survived the Holocaust, and some of the most notorious concentration camps, including Auschwitz, Mauthausen and Ebensee.
With his freedom, Josef returned home to find that he was the only one left alive in an extended family of 150. Compelled by the need to do something to avenge that loss, he joined the Jewish police while still in a displaced persons' camp, and was recruited as an intelligence officer for the US Army who gave him a team to search for Nazis in hiding.
Whilst rounding up SS leaders, he played a critical role in identifying and bringing to justice his greatest tormentor, the Butcher of Plaszow, Amon Göth. He then committed his life to helping the orphaned children of the Holocaust rebuild their lives.
In this harrowing podcast, Josef speaks to Al Murray and James Holland about his extraordinary life.

The 27th of January is Holocaust Memorial Day, to commemorate this day we are re-sharing our interview with the Holocaust survivor, Selma Van De Perre.
Selma van de Perre was a Dutch resistance fighter who was just 17 years old when the Second World War began.
Using an alias and fake ID she risked her life travelling across the Netherlands, delivering Allied newspapers and helping Jews evade the Nazis.
In July 1944 Selma's luck ran out. She was captured and transported to Ravensbrück as a political prisoner, where she remained until her liberation in 1945.
James Holland interviews Selma about her extraordinary wartime story.
