Yoga Sutra 2.18: What is the purpose of life?

10 min • 12 september 2022
18th Sutra Chapter 2 The phrase that ends this sutra offers an answer to a question that has intrigued humanity from time immemorial: What is the purpose of life? The experienced is composed of elements and sense organs, is of the nature of illumination, action and inertia, whose purpose is to provide both experiences and emancipation to the Purusha, our soul. Bondage and freedom are in buddhi, and that the Purush, our soul is merely a witness. The Purusa does not live; it is life itself. It does not exist; it is existence itself. The Soul does not know; it is knowledge itself. Ultimately, Buddhi has to deconstruct itself. Therefore our Shastras state: “No one is actually bound, nor is anyone liberated from saṁsāra. Only prakṛti in its myriad forms transmigrates, is bound and then freed”. ——————————————————— प्रकाशक्रियास्थितिशीलं भूतेन्द्रियात्मकं भोगापवर्गार्थं दृश्यम् prakashakriyasthitishilam bhootendriyatmakan bhogapavargarthan drishyam * prakasha - illumination * kriya - action * sthiti - inertia * shilam - having the nature of (illumination, action, inertia) * bhoota - the elements * endriya - sense organs * atmakam - consisting of (elements and senses) * bhoga - experience * apavarga - liberation, emancipation * artham - purpose * drishyam - the seen .
