Ignorance is, regarding the temporary as eternal, the impure as pure, the painful as joyful, and the non-Self as the Self.
A sign that ignorance is losing its influence on us is when our habitual identification and obsession with externals—possessions and attainments—begins to diminish. We begin to realize that we are not greater if we have them or less if we lose them. Our True Identity, the Self, is beyond all these conditions.
