How to Get Better at Music, Part 3: Grooving as a Band
Today we are concluding the 3 part series "How to Get Better at Music" with the topic of how to groove together as a band. Groove is the heartbeat of any great band. It's what makes the music feel alive and exciting. In this video, I'll share some tips on how to groove as a band.
We'll cover topics like the importance of timing. Groove is all about playing together in sync. If the band is out of time, the groove will fall apart.
We also cover importance of feel. Groove is more than just playing the right notes at the right time. It's also about playing with emotion and passion, and communicating with the other musicians to lock in together.
Finally, we'll talk about some specific techniques that can help you groove better.

Today is part 2 of the "How to Get Better at Music" series and our conversation centers around a little talked about skill of "reading the room".
In this episode myself, Stephen Wilder (on bass), and Kyle Turco (on guitar) get together to record a song we've never heard before. We discuss the song for about one minute total, record it, and then rerecord the song after a discussion about how to make the song better.
In our discussion we talk about how your social ability of reading the room, emotional intelligence, and knowing how to frame things correctly are skills that are often more valuable than your musical skill alone.

In my experience, people start playing an instrument because they LOVE music and listen to it all the time. And then, as they begin to study the art of music making...they stop listening to music.
Why is that? And are you listening to enough music?
Either way - I have two VERY easy exercises that will help you improve your musicianship.

Playing a great drum solo isn't something you need to do for every gig or performance, but it really helps to know how to play an effective solo.
Improving your ability to solo on your instrument will not just prep you for the moment the singer turns around and shouts "SOLO" - practicing solo techniques also helps improve your creativity and flow on your instrument.

There are SO many drum lessons on the planet - and most I've found are about exercises, fills, technical things that can be written on a page. But what about "groove"? What about "feel"? What about "touch"? These are the topics that REALLY separate a "good" drummer from a "great" drummer.
That is what I want to talk about today - "internal dynamics" and how they can improve your touch and sound on the drums - which will translate to your playing becoming "groovier" and better drummer in almost every way.

- How to mix drums
Jazz is something I get asked a ton about. Even if you don't play jazz, I think anyone can benefit from the topics we are covering today as they relate to drums:
- Comping
- Soloing
- Playing Quintuplets
Drum samples...they are debated quite a bit. Some say you should NEVER use drum samples yet others seem to use TOO MANY samples. So are they "evil"? Or is there a proper balance?

So much of what we chat about applies directly to music, but more importantly, to life in general. We also get into a bit of finances and how to manage your taxes as a self-employed musician.
More on Austin:
Gear. Gear. Gear. Everyone loves talking gear. RJ and I detail our 5 favorite gear purchases throughout our musical life. Most of these gear acquisitions are directly drum related, but a few are a bit broader.

Today we have something a little different: "listener requests." I took to Instagram (@timbuell) and asked what topics you would want to hear on the next podcast episode. There were several great suggestions and I picked three to talk about:
- the future of the music industry
- talent vs hard work
- time management
DISCLAIMER: I'm not an "expert" in any of these fields, but I do have quite a bit of personal experience with all of them so hopefully these topics are interesting and you find something useful somewhere in today's episode.
I've been having a TON of conversations recently with musicians (and people in general) who seem to think popular music is currently in a state of getting less complex - both lyrically and production wise.
Nate was over at the studio and I decided to put him in the spot and talk this whole thing out with him. For more about Nate, visit:
Today is a conversation with Cody Fry, who is a musician based in Nashville, TN who has toured as a "sideman" with artists like Ben Rector and Hunter Hayes - he is also an artist himself and one of my favorite song writers.
Cody and I talk about the difference between being a "hired musician" playing for an artist, and actually being the artist with your name on the marquee. He also shares a few stories about what he learned working with drummer Aaron Sterling. As well as gives practical advice on how to get hired by an artist if you are looking to be a "musician for hire".
For more on Cody:
The two songs you'll hear in this episode are Cody's original tunes. The first is called "Want Me Back" and the second is a song entitled "Flying". You can buy/stream them on any of the popular music platforms.
Calvin Rodgers is an incredible drummer who has toured and recorded for artists like Fred Hammond, Marvin Sapp, John P Kee, Aretha Franklin, The Isley Brothers, and many many more. I had the chance to sit down and talk with Calvin last year at PASIC 2018, where he performed a fantastic clinic and masterclass.
In this interview Calvin and I dive deep on the perception of Gospel drummers, tips for making a career in music, and how to "make money in your sleep."
For more on Calvin:
Today we have a fun challenge suggested by a listener. I will be testing how good your ear is by playing drum grooves, and seeing if you can guess what time signature each groove is in.
This should be a fun game for all of us to test our drumming knowledge. Keep track of how many you guess correctly and tag me on Instagram (@timbuell) with your final score!
In this episode, Tim sits down with Eman Cervantes (Andy Grammer, Gwen Stefani, sessions). Part 2 (of 2) involves Tim and Eman discussing a LOT about life, basketball, and of course...drums.
Here's where you can find Eman:

"Metric Deception (part 1)" is the first of several tracks I'll be premiering here on the podcast. They are all "solo percussion" compositions that are recorded, mixed, and produced by...me.
I'm not sure how many I'll do, but the goal is to do enough to have an album to release in some form or fashion. This is totally new territory for me, but it is a fun project to force myself to exercise some creative muscles that I haven't used in a while.
Hope you enjoy the first of many tracks to come!
In this episode - Tim and one of his favorite bass players, Nigel Knop, cover a TON about the relationship between drummers and bass players.
This is a SUPER candid behind the scenes conversation about what bass players want from the drummers they play with and vice versa.
Find out more about Nigel at:
This conversation is from PASIC 2018 when I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Mike Dawson.
Mike is the managing editor for Modern Drummer, has an AWESOME Instagram page, and also has a Patreon page where he publishes fantastic educational content.
Much of what Mike and I chat about was inspired by the clinic I saw him give at PASIC, which is you have the chance to check out a clinic by Mike I HIGHLY recommend it.
