Susan Smith, a South Carolina mother, killed her two young sons, Michael and Alex, in 1994 by strapping them into their car seats and allowing the car to roll into a lake. Initially, she claimed a Black man had carjacked her vehicle with the children inside, sparking a nationwide search. Nine days later, she confessed to the crime.
Smith's motives were tied to her relationship with a man who did not want children, as well as her mental health struggles, including depression and a troubled upbringing. Smith was convicted of two counts of murder and is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Guest host, Judge Ashley Willcott discusses Susan Smith's upcoming parole hearing and reflects on the 30 years since she murdered her sons, Michael and Alex in this episode of the Court TV Podcast.

Karen Read’s case centers on the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, found outside another officer's home during a snowstorm in January 2022. Prosecutors allege that Read ran over O'Keefe with her car after a dispute, leaving him to die in the snow. Read maintains her innocence, arguing that O'Keefe was harmed by other officers and that she’s being framed.
Following a mistrial in Karen Read's case due to a jury deadlock, her defense has requested the dismissal of some charges that jurors reportedly agreed she was not guilty of. This request rests on the argument that retrying these charges would constitute double jeopardy. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court recently heard arguments on this issue, though a decision has yet to be reached.

Darrell Brooks is accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more when he drove an SUV through the Waukesha Christmas Parade in 2021. While his alleged motive, if any, remains unknown, a criminal complaint explains that the mayhem immediately followed a domestic incident in what prosecutors may call an anger-fueled rampage. A town tragedy with a defendant representing himself and a judge caught in the middle. Court TV’s Ted Rowlands goes from the crime scene to the courtroom in the Christmas Parade Rampage Trial of Darrell Brooks.

Investigators compared the gruesome scene of Earl and Terry Robertson’s deaths to that of the Charles Manson murders. Authorities quickly zeroed in on the victims’ son Jimmy, who stood to inherit over two million dollars, but what shocked the small South Carolina community the most was the alleged involvement of mild-mannered Meredith Moon. How did she become wrapped up in one of South Carolina’s most horrific crimes? This week’s Court TV Podcast dives deeper into this case with an audio edition of our original series Accomplice to Murder, which examines crimes involving multiple suspects and it’s not so clear who exactly is the mastermind.

In 2022, actors and ex-spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard squared off in a Virginia courtroom. Depp sued Heard for defamation after she wrote about domestic abuse in an op-ed that appeared in The Washington Post. Depp wasn't named in the article but claimed the piece implied he abused her, and as a result, he lost movie roles and faced public scorn. Heard countersued Depp, claiming his former attorney Adam Waldman defamed her by publicly calling her claims of abuse "a hoax."
After nearly 13 hours of deliberations over three days, the jury returned verdicts that mostly favored Depp.

In this episode of the Court TV Podcast, Vinnie Politan examines the circumstances and facts surrounding the case against OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney. She is accused of fatally stabbing her 27-year-old, live-in boyfriend, Christian Obumseli, in their Miami apartment in April 2022. Clenney is charged with second-degree murder and claims she acted in self-defense.
As part of their investigation, detectives obtained a search warrant for not only Courtney’s accounts but also those of her parents, Kim and Deborah Clenney. Based on what they found, prosecutors then filed computer crimes charges against the entire family. But those charges heavily relied on messages protected by attorney-client privilege, forcing prosecutors to drop the charges after a judge ruled the evidence was inadmissible.
Carly Gregg was just fourteen years old when prosecutors say she committed the unthinkable. She stands accused of fatally shooting her own mother and attempting to kill her stepfather. What would compel a young girl, with an outstanding academic record according to defense attorneys, to carry out such a heinous act? This episode of the Court TV Podcast features audio from a pre-trial motion hearing from 9/10/2024 before Carly Gregg faces a jury.

PODCAST- Vinnie Politan investigates the bizarre world of Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow Daybell, commonly referred to as “The Doomsday Couple.” Both faced charges in the deaths of Lori’s two children, 7-year-old JJ Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, and Chad’s first wife, Tammy Daybell. Last year, Lori was convicted on conspiracy and first-degree murder charges and is serving the first of three consecutive life sentences without parole. Chad is on trial now, where prosecutors say Chad and Lori used their spiritual beliefs to cover a carefully calculated plan fueled by money, sex and power to kill those who stood in the way. Meanwhile, Chad’s attorney says no evidence connects Chad to the children’s murders despite their remains being discovered in his backyard.
In this special podcast episode, Vinnie Politan will look back at some of the most memorable moments in his investigation into The Doomsday Couple. Lori Vallow’s other brother, Adam Cox, and her uncle, Rex Conner, join Vinnie to give an inside look at Lori’s complex family dynamic, the murders and Chad Daybell’s trial. This week’s podcast is an audio version of the Court TV Original production Someone They Knew with Tamron Hall – a comprehensive look at the story of Misty Morse and how investigators used groundbreaking science to bring her killer to justice. Eight years ago, what was supposed to be a pleasant date night for Chad Oulson and his wife turned deadly when a confrontation over sending a text message in a movie theatre turned deadly. Retired police captain Curtis Reeves confronted Oulson about the cell phone, an argument ensued, a bag of popcorn was thrown and then a shot rang out, killing Oulson. Chad Reeves claims he had no choice but to shoot him because he feared for his life, prosecutors say he was the instigator who went out of his way to escalate the situation and now a jury must decide if Reeves, who is now 79, is guilty of manslaughter. The marathon trial of California vs. Robert Durst is now in the hands of the jury, who as this podcast was recorded were deliberating the fate of the man accused of murdering his friend Susan Berman over 20 years ago. The defense claims the prosecution bullied a sick old man with memory lapses all to make the jury hate the man in order to cover for lack of forensic evidence. The prosecution says they don’t need that type of evidence because Durst’s own words are enough to convict him. Court TV’s Ted Rowlands and Vinnie Politan will examine both strategies and make their prediction of what will happen when the jury finishes deliberations. We’re just weeks away from the trial of Travis and Gregory McMichael and their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan – the three men accused of murdering Ahmaud Arbery. The prosecution believes the men profiled Arbery and stalked him with trucks and guns until there was a confrontation that left only Arbery dead. The defense argues that the men were justified under Georgia’s citizen arrest law and were in court last week arguing that they should be able to make the case that Arbery may have been in committing crimes, with little evidence to back that up. Two people independently came forward and implicated another man in the murder of Tibbetts, so his defense is asking for a new trial and the state’s help in investigating those claims. Meanwhile, Britney Spears was back in court in her continuing fight to end the conservatorship. Should Britney be allowed to have full control of her life back? If not, why? The stakes couldn’t be higher for defendant Ronnie Oneal. He’s on trial for double homicide, accused of brutally murdering his girlfriend, his special needs daughter and attempting to kill his seven-year-old son. Florida prosecutors think the crime merits the death penalty, which makes it all the more remarkable that Ronnie Oneal chose to act as his own lawyer and defend himself. Acting as his own lawyer means he also got to cross examine the state’s star witness, Oneal’s son. Court TV followed the trial and we’ll bring you excerpts of Oneal’s closing arguments as our host Vinnie Politan and famed Jodi Arias defense attorney Kirk Nurmi discuss why the old adage about the man who represents himself has a fool for a client tends to be true. Court TV has been in Iowa this week, covering the murder trial of Christhian Bahena Rivera, the man accused of murdering University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts. Court TV’s Michael Ayala joins host Vinnie Politian to discuss some of the key testimony so far, including testimony from the police detective who initially interrogated Rivera and managed to get him to not only confess to the murder but to lead authorities to Mollie’s body. The defense saw her testimony as an opportunity to show Rivera was coerced into confessing. Will the jury believe that? Will the defense also be able to convince the jury that other potential suspects should have been investigated more thoroughly? Last week there were big hearings for two of the biggest stories of the year and host Vinnie Politan Court TV Anchor Michael Ayala are prepped to break down all of the major developments. First in Brunswick, Georgia lawyers for the three men charged for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery made arguments to allow Arbery’s past encounters with law enforcement to be used as evidence for the defense. They also brought into question Arbery’s mental health status. Should the judge allow this type of evidence into court? Then in Minneapolis the judge for the upcoming trial of the three remaining officers charged in the death of George Floyd made a shocking decision to delay the trial. What prompted this change and how could it impact the case going forward? It doesn’t happen often, but when a murder defendant takes the stand to testify in their own defense it never fails to fascinate, and the testimony of Michelle Boat was no exception. Host Vinnie Politan and Court TV anchor Ted Rowlands will break down her testimony and examine what may have hurt her cause the most. It’s time to look back on 2020 and the top legal stories of the year, which began off with one of the biggest trials of the century – NY v. Harvey Weinstein – only to see courtrooms soon shut down due to the Covid-19 crisis. What will the long-term impact of the shutdown be on our legal system? In 2020 we also learned of the grim fates of missing siblings Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow, whose bodies were discovered in the back yard of their mom Lori Vallow’s new husband Chad. But perhaps the biggest legal story of the year was inspired by two men– Georgia’s Ahmaud Arbery and Minnesota’s George Floyd – two men who tragically will killed, igniting an international call for social justice that many hope will change with world for the better for years to come. 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse was back in court last week for a probable cause hearing and like every aspect of this story it was divisive. Probable cause hearings are usually routine proceedings, but Kyle Rittenhouse’s lawyer took it as an opportunity to set up his defense strategy, which the prosecution and the judge would not allow. Court TV Legal Correspondent Julia Jenae watched the hearing and will join us with a full report. The hearing was also an opportunity to see the potential angle the prosecution might take – accusing Rittenhouse of “hunting humans” that night in August. It’s a bold strategy but one attorney and friend of the podcast Ecelynne Mercy agrees with and she’ll tell us why. Bill Cosby, the superstar actor/comedian once dubbed as America’s Dad, has been in a Pennsylvania prison for over two years after his 2018 conviction for sexual assault. His lawyer say he didn’t get a fair trial and this week went before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to argue their case. Court TV’s Julie Grant followed that proceeding and will join host Vinnie Politan to walk us through what the arguments Cosby’s defense team made. One of the core issues revolves around prior bad act witnesses, who shared with the jury their stories of alleged assault at the hands of Cosby. Is it fair to bring up unprosecuted, unverified stories of past bad behavior to prosecute another crime? Former federal prosecutor and criminal defense attorney Michael Sterling doesn’t think so and will explain why it’s so important that the court get this decision right – if not for Bill Cosby – than for some other defendant down the road. Court TV’s Legal Correspondent Chanley Painter will join Vinnie with the latest – including whether or not defendant William "Roddie" Bryan was granted bail. This entire case hinges on the cell phone video Bryan took of the shooting – video his attorney insists shows Bryan committed no crime. Defense lawyer Ecleynne Mercy returns to the podcast to tell Vinnie why she thinks the video is proof of Bryan’s guilt. Arbery’s death has inspired a new hate crime law in Georgia, but a hate crime law wouldn’t have had an impact on this case and Vinnie will explain why. Content Warning: This episode contains graphic descriptions of sexual abuse and brief offensive language. Listener discretion is advised. Long before Lyle and Eric Menendez admitted to the world they had killed their parents, they admitted it to someone else – their psychologist Jerome Oziel, who had recorded the brother’s confessions during a therapy session. After a years-long legal battle that went all the way to the California Supreme Court, parts of the confessional tapes were deemed admissible and played for the jurors. The tapes opened the door for another drama to play out in the courtroom – that between Oziel and his former patient- turned-mistress Judalon Smyth, who returns to the Menendez saga as a witness for the defense. The death of George Floyd, and subsequent criminal charges brought against the Minneapolis police officers involved, caused reverberations around the world, making it one of the most talked about criminal proceedings in recent history. So much so that the judge overseeing the case recently handed down a gag order silencing all involved in the case. Court TV Legal Correspondent Chanley Painter will join Vinnie with the latest on the judge’s ruling. Was the gag order necessary, or even constitutional? Vinnie’s special guest attorney Randall Kessler thinks so. But is it too late to put the genie back in the bottle? Can an impartial jury ever be seated for a case with this much exposure? If not, does that benefit the prosecution or the defense? Get the latest updates on CourtTV.com and catch Vinnie and the entire team live weeknights 8-11pm on Court TV Live.

When defense lawyers for Erik and Lyle Menendez announced just weeks before their trial began that they did indeed murder their parents, it shocked the nation. But that was just the first of many shocks to come as the case was laid out to justify their actions. Were the brothers victims of years of sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of their parents? People across the country took part in the discourse as week by week more people tuned in to see the drama play out on their televisions.
