Nicole has been working in television since she was a kid, and has done jobs both in front of and behind the camera, including writing, acting, and producing. She’s an eight-time Emmy-nominated writer, as well as a Writers Guild of America Award winner! Her impressive writing resume includes credits for some of your favorite cartoons including Kim Possible, W.I.T.C.H., Star Wars Rebels, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and at least four different Transformers animated series. But for our listeners, she is probably best known for her work on Young Justice where she’s written some fan-favorite episodes including “Bereft,” “Image,” and “Failsafe.”

Welcome back to Whelmed Reprints. It’s the Holiday Season here in the States so we’ll be taking time to spend with our families and get ready for Season 3, premiering this Friday, January 4th, 2019.

For our final reprint of the holiday season, and to celebrate the airing of Young Justice Outsiders this Friday, I wanted to revisit our first Young Justice cast interview.

As you’ll hear, Crispin Freeman is not only the voice of Red Arrow, he’s a highly skilled sound engineer and a scholar of mythology. We invited Crispin on first because, well, it turns out that he and I have mutual friends, a fact I had no clue about until we had announced that Whelmed was in production.

Crispin, thank you again from the entire team here at Whelmed. You are quite literally a gentleman and a scholar and chatting with you was both a pleasure and an honor.

In other news, Season 3 airs this Friday! If you happen to live in or around San Diego, Whelmed will be hosting a viewing party at the incredible “Eclipse Chocolate” here in South Park. Eclipse is both a bar and bistro serving delicious food and drinks, as well as producing the most amazing chocolate, vanilla, and caramel infused confections. Feel free to stop by early for dinner and drinks, then join us in the Umbral Room at 7pm for socializing, and at ~8pm for the triple-episode premier. Welcome back to Whelmed Reprints. It’s the Holiday Season here in the States so we’ll be taking time to spend with our families and get ready for Season 3, premiering on January 4th, 2019.

With Whelmed Reprints our team are picking a few of our favorite episodes to bring to new listeners, and I wanted to end 2018 revisiting what turned out to be a life-changing interview. For me.

In other news, we have just over a week until Season 3 airs! It’s finally here. The first three episodes of Young Justice Outsiders airs on January 4th, with 3 episodes releasing weekly for two more weeks, and 4 episodes releasing on the last Friday in January. So how does that unique release schedule affect us? Practically there’s no way we can do 3 of our Whelmed-style deep-dives per week, so what we’ll be doing is this (and shout out to Ben Schwartz for helping us think this through). The week after each Friday release, we are going to let ourselves off the hook as fans. Emily and I will be discussing the episodes with a slight change to our regular format. We’ll be doing very short mission briefings, with a heavy emphasis on our Feeling the Aster segment. Canary Debriefs will be skipped during these geek-outs and since we will have no material to spoil, any major speculations on what’s to come will be couched in our “Crashing the Mode” segment in case we happen to be right. We’ll continue to have our Fan Service segment as well, so please feel free to tag us on Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook with fan art, AMVs, cosplay photo shoots, and more.

Then, after the mid-season finale, we will return to episode 1 and dive in with the perspective of all 13 episodes under our belt. This will allow us to release reviews of part 1 before part 2 airs in June 2019. In addition we have a lot of bonus episode material lined up including Discussion Sessions with cast, crew, and fans; a list of new Secret Origins; the inevitable romantic arcs to feed Super Sweethearts; and a few other surprises. So starting the second week of January, you’ll be getting new episodes from us at least once a week.

I used to say I’d been humbled by Jeff in that competition, but now that I know his secret, I’m happy I was able to stay anywhere near him.

With Whelmed Reprints our team will be picking a few of our favorite episodes to bring to new listeners. Our third reprint happens to coincide with this weeks release of Misplaced in the Enhanced Episodes on DC Universe, in which you’ll hear me reference this specific two-parter.

Kris Newton is the co-creator and host of the Gameable Saturday Morning podcast. Growing up, Saturday mornings were the highlight of my weeks. I would get up at 6:30 and ride out the mornings eating cereal and surfing between stations until almost noon. Of course, I also started playing roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons and the superhero RPG Champions in my pre and early teen years. When I heard there was a podcast that did Whelmed-style storytelling analysis on scores of my favorite shows and discussed adapting them to RPGs, I downloaded it immediately. Then, when we got the announcement about Season 3, Kris and I started talking about Gameable/Whelmed crossovers.

Kris first came on the show to talk about gaming, but after that first interview we talked for at least an hour off-mic and I knew I had to have him back. Even knowing how insightful and brilliant Kris was, I didn’t expect this episode to be much more than a fun romp into Captain Marvel AKA: Shazam. I was so wrong. Kris took me on a psychological, mythological, spiritual, social, and mystical journey into the world of Billy Batson. Kris gave me so much information on so many topics that I’m compelled to listen to these episodes again and again to catch things I missed the first time around.

If you are as fascinated by Captain Marvel’s role in Young Justice as we are, just wait until you hear Kris talk about the influence this foundational character had, and still has, on the comic industry. And of course, if you have access to the Enhanced Episodes, check out “Misplaced” which aired this week. You can hear Neal blow both our minds about something in the fight scene neither Emily nor I had picked up on, and watch me cry on camera to the ending. Glad that’s recorded for posterity.

Welcome to the Cave, everyone, and welcome also to the first installment of “Super Sweethearts,” the series where heroes hold hands and we all know smoochie moments are important. Here, I’ll be talking about teen heroes in love and diving into the romantic arcs of the show and what we can learn as creators about portraying relationships in fiction.

Today we’ll be talking about the adorable aliens who had a bit of a falling out in season two. SuperMartian! (Or Conner and M’gann for the uninitiated.)
