From #1 New York Times bestselling author Scott Sigler comes a tale of murder, madness, and an unspeakable evil lurking beneath the streets of San Francisco.
San Francisco homicide inspector Bryan Clauser is losing his mind. How else to explain his dreams, dreams that mirror — with impossible accuracy — gruesome murders drenching the city in blood? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him? Not disgust, not horror, but excitement.
As Bryan and his longtime partner Pookie’ Chang investigate the killings, they learn that things are even stranger than they initially seem. The victims are all enemies of an ostracized teenage boy, a boy gripped by the same violent, prescient dreams that haunt Bryan.
When Bryan and Pookie dig deeper, they uncover disturbing details of a mysterious cult known as “Marie’s Children,” and of San Francisco’s secret history of serial killers, a history that their superiors — from the mayor to the police chief and on down — seem desperate to keep hidden.
Featuring a dazzlingly plotted mystery and a terrifying descent into a nightmarish underworld -— along with some of the most incredible action scenes ever told and an explosive, gut-wrenching conclusion you won’t soon forget — NOCTURNAL is a spectacular outing from one of the horror genre’s brightest stars.

Bryan Clauser has descended into the labyrinth of tunnels below San Francisco, into the home of the killer cult known as Marie’s Children. They have his partner, Pookie Chang, and are about to put Pookie to death. Bryan and his heavily armed comrades: Black Mister Burns, Adam Jessup, and Alder Jessup have engaged the enemy. When we last left Bryan, he had leaped from the ledge of a sprawling cavern toward the deck of a ruined galleon that has sat below San Francisco for 200 years. His target: Teenager Rex Deprovdechuk and the murderers who call him “King.”

Following a battle at San Francisco General Hospital, Pookie Chang was taken by Rex, Pierre, and Sly. What will Marie’s Children do with him? Marie’s Children attacked San Francisco General Hospital and made off with not only Jebediah Erickson, the Savior, but also Pookie Chang. Pookie’s partner, Bryan Clauser, was badly injured in the fight. He is with Adam and Alder Jessup, and with Aggie James, the street bum who was held captive by Marie’s Children. Bryan and Co are racing to the apartment of Robin Hudson, who might be the monster's next target. Can they get to Robin in time?

Bryan Clauser and Pookie Chang are at San Francisco General Hospital. They suspect that Chief of Police Amy Zou — the most powerful cop in The City — is crooked and about to turn Jebediah Erickson over to the murderous cult known as Marie’s Children. Erickson is the vigilante killer “Savior.” A fight with Bryan left Erickson in critical condition, and the old man is now a sitting duck for Sly, Pierre, Sucka, and Rex, who all want the old man dead.

Aggie James was kidnapped from the streets of San Francisco, held captive in the White Dungeon, and forced to watch horrible things. Hillary, one of Marie’s Children, promised Aggie a means of escape: in this episode, we learn the price of that promise. Bryan Clauser has learned more of his true nature and learned that he must protect Jebediah Erickson, the man known as The Savior. Joined by the grandfather/grandson team of Alder and Adam Jessup, he is on his way to San Francisco General Hospital, where Erickson is being held under high security in the mental health wing.

We’ve seen Rex change from a bullying victim, the smallest and weakest kid in school, into a dealer of death, a leader, and the chosen one of Marie’s People. For nearly two centuries, his people have lived in fear of extinction, lived like insects in the dirt. How did they come to live beneath the streets of San Francisco?

Bryan knows of his connection to Marie’s Children, but he still doesn’t have any real answers. There is one place he knows he can get them: from Savior’s weapons maker, the grandfather/grandson team of Jebediah and Adam Jessup. Rex Deprovdechuk has taken his place as the leader of Marie’s Children, but — like Bryan — there is much still to learn.

Rex Deprovdechuck is the chosen one, the “King,” or so he is told by his new friends Sly, Pierre, Sir Voh, and Fort. They have taken Rex to a tunnel complex below the streets of San Francisco and are about to introduce him to his true people — Marie’s Children. But before Rex can assume the mantle of leadership, he must face the current ruler: Firstborn.

Aggie James hopes to escape the nightmare factory far below the streets of San Francisco. Hillary, one of his captors, has promised him a way out. To let Aggie know the cost of failure, she showed him the bloated obscenity known as “Mommy.” Aggie watched as Mommy took a groom, one Alex Panos, former tormenter of Rex Deprovdechuk. Now that this “ceremony” is done, Aggie will watch Alex suffer through “The Groom’s Walk.”

Rex Deprovdechuk spent his entire short life being ostracized, bullied, and alone. Now, he has new friends, friends that call him King, and they are taking him deeper into the caverns beneath San Francisco to see his “Kingdom” for the first time. Aggie James is already there. Held prisoner for days in the White Dungeon, one of his captors — a woman named Hillary — has offered him a way out. Aggie is willing to do anything to see the surface again, or so he thinks.

The genetic test results are back for Bryan and Erickson, and the news isn’t good. Black Mister Burns’ analysis on the San Francisco murder rate makes for more bad tidings. And in the White Dungeon, Aggie’s new cellmate, Alex Panos, is heading for a nasty ending.

The melee at Savior’s house left Bryan and Erickson both wounded. Erickson is in the ICU, but Bryan is not — is what Bryan fears might be happening to him actually happening? San Francisco Chief of Police Amy Zou and Polyester Rich Verde visited Erickson’s basement and saw the stuffed remnants of serial killers past. Zou announced to the entire department that Bryan and Pookie are now civilians: they are cops no longer. Rex met Pierre, Sly, Sir Voh, and Fort. With Alex Panos in tow, Rex and his little friends are off on a new adventure.

In the last few episodes, the bodies have hit the floor: Bryan, with a bullet in his arm…Erickson, with a knife in the belly…and Rex Deprovdechuk, shot in the stomach by Alex Panos. But Alex couldn’t finish the job because just after he was fired, the roof collapsed — as Rex passed out, he heard Alex’s screams.

Pookie and Black Mister Burns followed Bryan into the house of Jebediah Erickson, thought by some to be the vigilante killer known as “the Savior.” Pookie found the front door — thick oak with a heavy metal security bar — knocked right off the frame. While Burns stayed on the front porch overlooking San Francisco’s busy Franklin Street, Pookie went inside after Bryan. He found his partner, and together, they entered the basement — something surprised them, and shots were fired.

The Savior’s house calls to Bryan, taunting him to enter, promising that questions…will…be…answered. Bryan’s decision could turn him from lawman to lawbreaker, something Pookie Chang is desperate to stop. Pookie races to Erickson’s and has even called upon Black Mister Burns to help. Will Pookie and BMB get there in time?

San Francisco Chief of Police Amy Zou just took Pookie Chang’s badge and gun and threatened to put Bryan Clauser in jail for murder if he didn’t back off Jebediah Erickson. Bryan is at Erickson’s house but doesn’t know he’s being watched by one of Marie’s Children. Meanwhile, Rex Deprovdechuk has finally closed in on BoyCo leader Alex Panos. Rex strangled Alex’s girlfriend to death and is now ready to take his ultimate revenge on the bully that made his life hell.

San Francisco Chief of Police Amy Zou has taken Bryan Clauser, and Pookie Chang off the case of the BoyCo occult murders — which bolsters their suspicion that Zou is part of a department-wide cover-up — but the duo refuses to let go. They found the maker of the arrowhead used to kill John Doe and through that maker, found the man who bought the arrowhead: one Jebediah Erickson. Bryan knows Erickson is the key…all he needs is a little more time to close in.

John Doe is Birdman’s killer, and Rex Deprovdechuck — who murdered his own mother — is related to John Doe. Another BoyCo member is dead, as is the mother of that gang’s last survivor. All the pieces are coming together, but San Francisco Chief of Police Amy Zou has shut the case down hard. Robin’s apartment becomes ground zero for Robin, Bryan, Pookie, and Black Mr. Burns as they plot their next steps.

Will her feelings for Brian overrule a job she’s worked toward for years? And that body on her table, a John Doe with an arrow buried in his heart. Who killed the man? Why was he trying to kill Alex Panos, and was he in league with the perp that killed Issac Moses and Alex’s mother, Susie?

Homicide detective Bryan Clauser is losing his mind.
How else to explain the dreams he keeps having—dreams that mirror, with impossible accuracy, the gruesome serial murders taking place all over San Francisco? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him— not disgust, not horror, but excitement?
As Bryan and his longtime partner Pookie Chang investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem. The victims are all enemies of an outwardly ordinary young boy—a boy who is gripped by the same dreams that haunt Bryan. Meanwhile, a shadowy vigilante, seemingly armed with superhuman powers, is out there killing the killers. And Bryan and Pookie's superiors—from the Mayor on down—appear strangely eager to keep the detectives from discovering the truth.
Doubting his own sanity and stripped of his badge, Bryan begins to suspect that he's stumbled into the crosshairs of a shadow war that has gripped his city for more than a century—a war waged by a race of killers living in San Francisco's unknown, underground ruins, emerging at night to feed on those who will not be missed.
And as Bryan learns the truth about his own intimate connections to the killings, he discovers that those who matter most to him are in mortal danger… and that he may be the only man gifted—or cursed—with the power to do battle with the nocturnals.
Featuring a dazzlingly plotted mystery and a terrifying descent into a nightmarish underworld—along with some of the most incredible action scenes ever put to paper and an explosive, gut-wrenching conclusion you won't soon forget—NOCTURNAL is the most spectacular outing to date from one of the genre's brightest stars.
