With that said, many people find it hard to even break into jazz listening. They don't even know where to start with something so "serious" as jazz. On the other side of the coin, there are many light-hearted songs that are some of my personal favorites tracks in all of recorded jazz. At the end of the day, jazz cats know when to cut up and have a really good time - - - which is one of the most important aspects of this great art form. In this episode, we are trying something new out for our listeners. Unbelievable tales from the world of jazz music! Some of these stories are well documented while others are simply folklore. Some stories may be humorous, some are uplifting while others are incredibly sad and poignant. Either way, the music is great to cast a terrific soundtrack to all of these jazz tales.

Most Coltrane fans already know he is a titan of jazz. A heavyweight who had a lyrical side ('The Gentle Side of John Coltrane'). He pushed the boundaries of jazz harmony into the stratosphere and still created many spiritual albums and avant-garde albums in his short 40 year span. While re-reading Lewis Porter's phenomenal book 'John Coltrane: His Life and Music,' he discussed how Coltrane was exposed to a great degree of Latin Jazz while living in Philadelphia and how many straight-ahead players were quite versed in various forms of Latin Jazz around Philly. He also learned how to craft a great deal of Latin Jazz elements into his own writing through his time in Dizzy Gillespie's band. Reading this lead me to the idea of just how much "Latin Jazz" was actually evident in Trane's recorded catalog. To my surprise, there was a great deal. This newfound appreciation for this side of Coltrane and his music has lead me to create this episode of the podcast. I hope you dig it!

Chet Baker is certainly not a stranger to even casual jazz fans. Many listeners know of his groundbreaking recordings with Gerry Mulligan, Russ Freeman, Art Pepper, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond as well as many others. There's even been a movie made about Chet Baker (Born to Be Blue, starring Ethan Hawke). But one particular group that hardly ever gets mentioned is the Chet Baker Trio. Baker's Trio configurations recorded for a 10-year span, and they yield highly lyrical, beautiful, tasteful & emotional music! This episode of The Dr. Jazz Podcast is dedicated to presenting you with cases of 2 songs that sound alike, have different titles, and getting down to the bottom of why. The game is afoot!

The years 1923-1924 were what I like to call "the moment before the explosion." It wasn't the beginning of recorded jazz music (that started back in 1917 with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band). The "explosion" wasn't Louis Armstrong joining King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, nor Armstrong's first recorded solo (although that "was" very important). The years 1923-1924 were the lead up to Louis Armstrong's Hot Five recordings. While some may yawn and roll their eyes - I believe it is fair to say that jazz, rock and popular music as we know it would be completely changed due to the revolutionary recordings of Louis Armstrong The Hot Five, then later the Hot Seven, followed by the remainder of Armstrong's recorded works. But the Hot Five were like a version of jazz music's Avengers or Justice League. It was a supergroup in all senses of the word! This podcast episode was designed in two ways: first, it is presented chronologically (or at least close). Next, it was conceived by an idea from a book I am reading by jazz author Ted Gioia. In his book 'How to Listen to Jazz', he discusses how he went 2 weeks listening to what he could find in recorded jazz previous to Louis Armstrong's Hot Five recordings in order to really let the full revolutionary sound impact him to the fullest extent of his ears. This podcast is a microcosm of that experience. We aim to give the listener the experience of sampling what was available in recorded music leading up to the moment of sonic artistry with the explosion of the recordings of the Hot Five - and Louis Armstrong was the bomb!

It's that time of year — time for Spring Cleaning. This can be tedious, especially if you're a jazz fan. You try to find a good jazz mix, and then beautiful ballads are in the mix and it slows you down from your cleaning rhythm. What you need are bumpin' songs that just give you that "spring" (see what I did there?) in your step. Don't worry, Dr. Jazz has ya covered. Enjoy!

As we approach Spring, the weather turns to more days and evenings filled with rain showers, overcast clouds, and wind whipping about. Yesterday was one of those days for me. While I was busy working from my desk, listening to jazz tracks on shuffle, serendipity happened: A track started playing that perfectly matched the view outside (like finding the perfect wine pairing for your dinner or the exact color for a tie to match). This got me thinking. There has to be quite a number of tracks that could work for rainy days or evenings. So, I present to you 25 "rainy day" jazz tracks for your enjoyment.

One thing I have missed greatly through this pandemic is live music. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who feels differently. Jazz music is especially vulnerable in that live jazz shows / concerts are where the magic of jazz conversation and spontaneity "really" intersect. A professional level of this can be obtained in studio recordings, but Sonny Rollins always said that records were like promos for the live shows. That being said, I've assembled a massive playlist of over 900+ "live" jazz albums and hit "shuffle" to give it a spontaneous element. My only veto is not to duplicate the same featured artist. I listen to a great deal of music. In fact, I listen a great deal everyday. Since the pandemic began, I decided to listen to at least one full jazz album everyday until normal life resumes again. In this quest (which I am diligently keeping up with), I've come across and rediscovered a lot of great tunes that I keep coming back to. These are some of my "jazz treasure tracks." It is with the heaviest of hearts that we give a very special spotlight to one of the titans of jazz in remembrance: Chick Corea. Chick Corea recently passed away from a sudden cancer diagnosis at the age of 79. But in those 79 years, he has filled our hearts and ears to the brim with some of the most adventurous and majestic music ever created. From Spanish-tinged fantasias and jazz standards to masterminding musical representations of Alice in Wonderland and being a jazz fusion visionary with Return to Forever and the Elektric Band, Chick Corea has brought an abundance of joy with his creativity. Now, after a calamitous turn for PledgeMusic — which announced last week that it is headed for bankruptcy — Zorn hopes to recoup a substantial loss: $197,559, all of it raised through the platform and still owed to Tzadik. After the truth emerged and Zorn processed his initial shock, he says, "I went into my let's-fix-it mode. I always have a Plan B. I try to find a way to solve the problem that's a creative way." To that end, Tzadik has just announced four limited-edition vinyl releases, handpicked by Zorn with input from Sugiyama. Among them is Masada — The Best of Sanhedrin, the first-ever vinyl release by the original Masada Quartet, which consisted of Zorn on alto saxophone, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Greg Cohen on bass and Joey Baron on drums. Alhambra Love Songs is an acoustic trio recording featuring Cohen, pianist Rob Burger and drummer Ben Perowsky. The two other releases underscore Zorn's breadth as a composer. Nove Cantici Per Francesco D'Assisi features a suite inspired by the life of St. Francis of Assisi, performed by an all-star guitar trio of Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Gyan Riley. And The Last Judgment is the final recording by a heavy-gauge project called Moonchild, with vocal chameleon Mike Patton, organist John Medeski, bassist Trevor Dunn and Baron on drums. 1959 was arguably the most creative year in all of jazz history. Bird had already passed away, and this year would see the passings of Lester Young and Billie Holiday. Musically speaking, when we read jazz history texts or see the labels among the many diverse styles of jazz (i.e "Free Jazz," "Modal Jazz," "Third Stream," etc...), we tend to separate these different styles into alternate universes. In fact, many of the contributions we now consider to be jazz "classics" all happened around the same time. To fully understand the realm of jazz today, or all the different possibilities that could occur tomorrow, we must understand that there wasn't a defining time in which Miles Davis woke up and said..."I'm going to make the most influential jazz album of all time [ Kind of Blue ] today." The same goes for Ornette Coleman, or Dave Brubeck, etc...In this spirit, we now explore the major jazz albums and contributions of 1959—the year that changed jazz.

Welcome to the Dr. Jazz Podcast! My name is Nathan Holaway and I have been addicted – seriously addicted – to jazz for the past 26 years. I just absolutely love jazz music and I just want to share many of my favorite tracks and stories with listeners. Episode 1 is just a “maiden voyage” and I’m just spinning some of my favorites. The podcast seemed to take a twist down to N’awlins (New Orleans) based music. After all – New Orleans was the “Birthplace of Jazz” so I suppose it’s fitting that is where we start as well.
