Hannah Dower is a PhD student working with the Western Bulldogs AFLW club to investigate the impact of the menstrual cycle and contraceptive use on elite athlete performance. Hannah has a Bachelor in Sports Science, a Masters in Exercise Physiology and a 10-year career in strength and conditioning so she is EXTREMELY qualified to answer all our menstrual cycle and PMS questions!

You might remember an episode from a few months ago where we shared about our experiences of PMS. We received so many messages from you guys saying you felt exactly the same so we decided to bring in an expert to explain everything about the menstrual cycle and PMS.

We speak about what the menstrual cycle actually is, what is happening with our hormones at various stages of our cycle, the importance of tracking your cycle, the difference between PMS and PMDD, and if we should train differently at different stages of our cycles.

The second is “okra water” and its dubious health claims.

If you’re a long-term listener of KICPOD you’ll remember Producer Mandy! You might also remember that Mandy was producing the podcast when Laura opened up about her fear of not coping with kids, and Mandy said she felt exactly the same. Fast forward just over one year later and Mandy is now the proud mum of her first daughter, Lyla.

Tarang Chawla became an activist against men’s violence after his sister Nikita Chawla was murdered by her partner in 2015.

We’ve been talking about violence against women a lot on the podcast this year (and every year) because unfortunately it’s an issue that’s not going away. Dr Kavita Krishnan is a Lactation Specialist, member of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, and a mum of three, so she’s had experience both first-hand and in practice teaching thousands of women how to breastfeed.

96% of women initiate breastfeeding but by 4 months fewer than 16% exclusively breastfeed and 83% of women stop breastfeeding earlier than they’d like. In this episode, Steph sits down with Kavita to discuss some of the reasons why women stop breastfeeding.

Steph shares about her own experience breastfeeding Harvey, including nipple pain, low supply, and the early stages of mastitis and Kavita demonstrates the best position for a baby to latch with the help of a glass of water and a straw.

If you’re an Australian millennial woman, you know Tammin Sursok. She played Dani Sutherland in Home & Away in the early 2000’s and Jenna Marshall in Pretty Little Liars. Tammin has been in the public eye since she was a teenager. Faced with that pressure, Tammin struggled with eating disorders throughout her teen years and early 20’s. 

Now Tammin has two daughters. Her experience with eating disorders informs the way she speaks to them about food and their bodies in the hope that they will never go through what she did.

In this episode Steph sits down with Tammin to learn about how eating disorders took over Tammin’s life, becoming a mum and adjusting to her postpartum body, and how she responds when one of her daughters calls herself fat.

This week Laura shares about her recent trip to a health retreat in Queensland and how it ended with the most intense panic attack of her life when she returned home to Melbourne. Allira Potter was never the sporty kid growing up. Like many of us, her memories of running at school were discouraging at best. But earlier this year, when she felt her mental health declining, Allira knew she needed to make a change, so she pulled on their runners and started her running journey. Allira’s first run sucked. But she stuck with it and it's changed her life.

In this episode Allira shares how her running journey started, her goals starting out versus now, the impact of training with her partner, how she feels about sharing her runs on social media, not comparing herself to others, and learning that she can walk and still be a runner.

Dr Billy Garvey is a developmental paediatrician and a senior specialist at one of Australia’s largest tertiary paediatric hospitals. He has over 20 years experience working with families and children, and training other professionals on how to work with children, plus he’s the dad of two little ones, so he's able to see first-hand how his research and advice plays out in real life.

Billy’s book ‘Ten Things I Wish You Knew About Your Child’s Mental Health’ takes the lessons Billy has learned from two decades working with families and children, including behaviour, social skills, attachment, respect, depression, anxiety and self-esteem.

A must listen ahead of the women's Olympic marathon marathon this weekend!

In the heat of the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Tokyo Games, Gen Gregson fell and ruptured her achilles tendon. As devastating as it was that Gen’s steeplechase career was over, and her return to elite sport was uncertain, Gen saw an opportunity to fulfil another dream: becoming a mum.

Gen gave birth to her son Archer in June 2022. At 3 weeks postpartum Gen started jogging again and at 13 months postpartum she ran her debut marathon on the Gold Coast Marathon in a time of 2:28, making her the second-fastest debut marathon for an Australian woman.

Gen took another two minutes off her marathon time to qualify for the Paris Games where she will compete this Sunday.

In this episode, Gen sits down with Steph to share her story of returning to elite sport following major surgery and childbirth, how she balances family life with training for the Olympics, the village that supports her in this pursuit, including her husband Ryan Gregson who’s also a marathon runner, and why being a mum makes her a better marathon runner.

Ash Paraskevas had kissed girls long before she ever had sex with a woman. She would make out with girls in high school and tell herself it was something she was doing for attention. But after seven years in a heterosexual relationship, Ash could no longer ignore her feelings towards women. As scary as it was to leave her long-term relationship, she knew she had to do it if she was ever going to live authentically as a lesbian.

In part two of our conversation, Ash shares how it felt to leave the safe space of her relationship, and how she started to explore her feelings with women, including her first time, how she learned to have sex with women, and how she learned to accept herself as a lesbian.

One in six people with vulvas reported feeling anxious or embarrassed about the way their labia looks. The recently published Labia Diversity Report from Women’s Health Victoria surveyed 1,030 women and people with labia aged between 18-50 about how they feel about their labia. They found 31% of those surveyed associated their labia with words like ‘weird’, ‘disgusting’ or ‘ugly’ and one in four Gen-Z were anxious about the way their labia looked.

How much screen time is too much? Mandy Richardson is a child development and early parenting specialist and the creator of Raise Toddlers: a platform created to inspire and equip parents with the skills and tools they need to raise children from birth to six years old.

Very importantly, Mandy is not anti-screens!

But when she notices her three daughters have spent too much time on screens, she introduces a screen reset: time away from screens to bring them back down to baseline.

Jess Quinn was one of our very first KICPOD guests way back in 2019. This week Jess returns, but this time for KICBUMP, after welcoming her first daughter Marla into the world last November. 

In our first conversation with Jess she shared her story of childhood cancer and having one of her legs amputated when she was nine years old. In this episode, Steph and Jess talk about Marla and the reality of parenting as an amputee.

Jess shares how she gained confidence in her body through pregnancy, her birth story, learning to parent with her husband Todd and how they’re finding their feet with newborn life, the things she can’t do for Marla with one leg, and all the things that Marla will gain from having a mum who’s an amputee.

Steph’s been seeing a therapist for the past few months and in today’s episode she shares how it’s been going, what she’s learned from it, and she and Laura reflect on how valuable it’s been for both of them to speak to someone unbiased who you can be totally truthful with.

Sydney Fashion Week was a few weeks ago and it raised important conversations about who gets invited, who gets photographed, and how the event leaves people feeling afterwards, so this week we reflect on our own experiences of attending Melbourne and Sydney Fashion Weeks both as guests and walking in shows.

For many women in their 20’s and 30’s, the tick of the biological clock can be deafening. We’re told our fertility falls off a cliff at 35 years old, so if we want children, we’d better get moving. When you add on messaging around the desire to be a “young” mum to keep up with your children, this only adds to the pressure that many women feel to make a decision that they don’t feel ready to make. 

But what if women’s fertility didn’t fall off a cliff at 35? What if it was a gradual decline rather than a sharp cliff? And what if we had role models of women having children later in their life to see that it’s not only possible, but can be just as good (and maybe even better!) than having children younger.

In this episode Laura speaks with two women at different stages in their motherhood journey. Leonie had her first child at 30 years old and wishes she’d waited longer. Sharyn had her first child at 43 years old and has no trouble keeping up with him.

Laura also speaks with Dr Karin Hammarberg, Senior Research Fellow in the Monash University School of Public Health, about the myth that women’s fertility falls off a cliff at 35.

The most common fear we heard from you while planning this series, was what children would do to your career. Progression, relevancy, loss of superannuation, loss of identity, and comments like "why would you have kids if you're going to go back to work," all contribute to women making the decision to have children. And with increased rates of homelessness among women in Australia, and women retiring with 28% less superannuation than men, these fears are not baseless.

But having children doesn’t have to end or derail your career. Children could even help your career.

If you're talking to people about the decision to have children it’s likely you’ve heard a version of this - “parenting is really hard so if you’re not 100% sure that you want children…don’t do it”.

This episode is here to challenge that idea. The reasons people say not to have children are very convincing - you’ll never sleep again, your relationship will never be the same, you’ll never have sex again, you’ll lose your weekends. Basically your life as you know it will be over.

But it's also the best decision some people ever make.

Whether it’s biological, circumstantial, financial, environmental, a result of trauma, or simply because you don’t want to, the reasons why people decide to be childfree are as diverse as the reasons why people decide to be parents. For many people, the decision to be childfree is met with comments like “you’ll change your mind,” or “you won’t know real love until you have a child,” or “what if you regret it?”. And with so few childfree role models showing us what a childfree life could look like, these responses can be hard to deny.

For so many people who don’t feel called to be a parent, that path doesn’t feel right. We talk a lot about rebuilding our relationship to food but we don’t talk as much about our relationship to exercise. Off the back of Laura’s HIIT classes in the Kic app, and the D&M we responded to last week about listening to your body, we wanted to talk about it. A growth mindset empowers children to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. When Ash Paraskevas was in her early 20’s she was in a longterm relationship, studying law (as the first person in her family to attend uni) and competing in Miss World. From the outside - it looked like she had it all. But inside she was struggling with severe anxiety, depression, domestic abuse and changing everything about herself to try and fit in and be loved.

In this episode Ash generously shares how she built herself back from rock bottom to a place where she’s now living fully and authentically as herself and proud of it, including stripping back the layer of who she thought she “should” be and stepping into her sexuality as a lesbian woman.

"Food noise" is the relentless thoughts about food and eating that unfortunately so many of us have experienced or still do experience. This episode is tough but a really important conversation for every parent and person with young people in their lives. Grooming refers to an older child or adult establishing a trusting relationship with a child or their family to sexually abuse or exploit the child. The average age that a child is abused is 6.8 years old and 90% of children who are abused know their abuser. 

To help make sense of it all, Steph speaks with Jayneen Sanders. Jayneen is a mum of three, author and educator who writes children’s books on body boundaries, respect, consent, body safety, feelings and emotions.

What do you do to feel safe while running or walking alone? In January, one of our Kic community members, Ellie, messaged us on Instagram asking to share her story of being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer diagnosis at just 31 years old.

Ellie noticed a lump in one of her breasts last August. When it didn’t go away, Ellie made an appointment to get it checked out by her GP. Within days, Ellie underwent an ultrasound and biopsy to find out it was breast cancer, which led to more biopsies, an egg retrieval and chemotherapy. Ellie’s plans for a holiday in Europe, starting a family, and her work as a midwife & nurse, were all put on pause while she underwent six months of chemo.

We spoke to Ellie a few weeks before she was having a surgery to determine whether or not she would need a double mastectomy.

After our conversation with Ellie, we speak with Kirsten Pilatti, the CEO of Breast Cancer Network Australia, about the importance of doing regular breast checks and seeking help if you notice something looks or feels different.

Katie Lolas is beloved by her online community who she shares her life with. When Katie’s sister, Nadia passed away unexpectedly in 2021 at 31 years old, Katie’s community grieved alongside her. But Katie had another job to do: she was 35 weeks pregnant and in three weeks’ time, she was due to deliver her first child, Harper, via C-section. When Katie was trying to grieve one life changing event, she was also trying to celebrate another life changing event, and trying not to feel guilty for doing one or the other.

In this episode, Katie speaks with Steph all about of it. 

They discuss how Katie learned that Nadia had passed away, the pressure to feel happy for having a healthy baby while she was grieving her sister, being diagnosed with depression and the support she received to get through it, how she remembers Nadia now, and what life is like with her three-year-old Harper and nine-month-old Eli.

Brooke Jowett is a Kic trainer and an Australian Survivor All Star. Six months ago she and her partner Chris welcomed their first bub, Parker, into the world and it’s safe to say they’re obsessed.

As a trainer, "the Kic HIIT girl", and a keen runner, Brooke ran until she was 26 weeks pregnant when it stopped feeling right for her body. Now she’s back running, taking it one run at a time.

Brooke joins Steph to share about her birth story, her bladder prolapse, her gradual return to running, running with a pessary, and the joy that Parker has brought into her life. They also get into the TMI: what was your first poo like after giving birth? Can you feel your pessary when you have sex? Your waters broke where!?

Simran Kaur’s mission is to put money into the hands of women through investing.

Most of us haven’t been taught about investing. If you haven’t, you might think it’s too hard, or too risky, or our parents told us to save our money so that’s what we’ve always done. This means that only 15-20% of women invest worldwide and in Australia only 42% of women invest compared to 58% of men, citing affordability as their main barrier to investing (according to ASX Australian Investor Study).

Simran is here to change that. She is the founder of Girls That Invest: a multi-million-dollar money media company with the #1 investing podcast for women where she breaks down the intimating world of investing and growing wealth, minus the jargon.

In this episode, Sim joins Steph & Laura from New Zealand to walk us through investing for a first timer: the difference in returns between saving vs investing, the different places you can invest, how long you need to keep your money in each investment, and the risk profile for each, why investing even a small amount is better than nothing, and how to get started if you truly feel like you know nothing.

The decision to have kids is one of the biggest ones we’ll ever make. Last year Laura opened up about this decision, weighing up what it would mean to her career and her identity, what scares her about having kids, and her fear of leaving it too long. We know this is a question on so many people’s minds, which is why we want to create a podcast miniseries asking the questions we can’t find anywhere else.

Kim was 27 weeks pregnant with her first daughter when she noticed a tiny amount of bleeding. After almost a week in hospital, and a traumatic birth experience, Kim gave birth to Elsie. Elsie then spent 11 weeks in the NICU and in that time, Kim and her husband Greg learned that Elsie had suffered a brain injury through pregnancy or birth and she was given a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

In this episode, Kim shares her story with Steph: her mostly straightforward pregnancy with Elsie, Elsie’s traumatic birth, their NICU stay and how it felt to finally hold Elsie for the first time, learning of Elsie’s brain injury, finding support online from parents of children with disabilities, and the decision to have a second baby.

Maymah started going to the gym because she was bored waiting to start university. But then she fell in love with it. It empowered her to rebuild her relationship with food and movement after years spent battling anorexia. Now she’s a Gymshark athlete.

Taryn Brumfitt is a body image activist, documentary director, writer, speaker, and the 2023 Australian Of The Year. Taryn created the documentary ‘Embrace’ to help us change the way we think about our bodies and ‘Embrace Kids’ to teach 9-14 year olds how to respect, move and nourish their bodies.

Kids learn their first messages about food, movement and body image from their parents but parents can’t control what messages their kids learn outside the home. This is where Body Blocks comes in: a free learning resource for childhood educators.

Hazel Wallace is a medical doctor, nutritionist, women’s health advocate and founder of ‘Align’ a 10-week online program demystifying the menstrual cycle.

Sue & Lloyd Clarke have gone through any parent’s worst nightmare and they’re using their experience to help other families. Sue & Lloyd are the parents of Brisbane mum Hannah Clarke, who along with her three kids Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey, were murdered by Hannah’s estranged partner in 2020. In response, Sue & Lloyd created the charity ‘Small Steps 4 Hannah’ with a mission to HALT domestic & family violence through education, advocating for legal & social change and supporting people escaping violent situations.

In today’s important episode, Sue & Lloyd explain what coercive control actually is & how to spot the warning signs, why physical violence doesn’t need to be present for a relationship to be abusive, what to do if you suspect you or someone you know might be in an abusive relationship, and why it’s so significant that Queensland have introduced laws targeting coercive control.

Em Clarkson is a new mum and the founder of fitness community ‘The Have A Goes’. At 8 months postpartum, Em's body looks and feels different to what she’s used to, but instead of getting caught up in the pressure of “bouncing back”, she’s appreciating what her body is capable of and finding empowerment through rebuilding her strength and fitness.

Steph & Em discuss how Em went from running in circles in the dark and hating her body, to leading a fitness movement, her debilitating experience of HG (Hyperemesis gravidarum) which prevented her from training through her pregnancy, how her daughter Arlo has cured her anxiety, and running her first half marathon since giving birth.

Savannah Sachdev has gone for a run nearly 850 days in a row now, and although that may only seem possible from someone who is a pro runner with extreme motivation, for Savannah, she began running purely for the amazing effect it has on her mental health. Rather than focusing on distance or time, Savannah listens to her body and runs what she feels is right for her on the day. Her goal is to promote movement each day, regardless of what that looks like for every individual.

In today's episode, Savannah also generously opens up about the struggles she has faced growing up in a conservative and strict family, what this means for her in comparison to her brother in terms of their romantic relationships, and how her family feels about her being openly sex positive online. She also speaks to her struggles with being in group situations and how she navigates this in the work that she does.
