Breanna also reveals what DCP&P worker said to her having watched Christopher Gregor abuse six-year-old Corey on the treadmill. What she shares is utterly mind-blowing. Corey was killed just days later.

From 1986 to 1989 eight young people were murdered and two disappeared and the FBI believed it was most likely a serial killer. The cases included Cathy Thomas and Rebecca Dowski who were murdered between October 9/10 1986; David Lee Knobling and Robin Edwards who were found dead on September 23 1987; Keith Call and Cassandra Hailey who disappeared on April 10 1988 and who were never found, and; Daniel Lauer and Annamaria Phelps who disappeared on September 5 1989 and whose bodies were later found under a blanket, near a rest stop.

Professor Burgess is an internationally recognized pioneer in the assessment and treatment of victims of trauma and abuse, and author of A Killer by Design: Murderers, Mindhunters, and My Quest to Decipher the Criminal Mind, Rape Investigation and Crime Classification. She has received numerous honours and awards for her work and her courtroom testimony has been described as “groundbreaking,” and she has been called a “nursing pathfinder.”

Professor Burgess and Lynda Lytle Holmstrom conducted the first study of rape victims and trauma, and that work caught the attention of the FBI which is depicted in the Netflix show Mindhunter (Dr Wendy Carr). It would later inform Laura’s work at New Scotland Yard.

Laura interviews Kerri Rawson, survivor, advocate, New York Times bestselling author and daughter of serial killer Dennis Rader, who gave himself a horrific moniker due to how he bound, tortured, and killed his victims.

On Friday 14th July, 59-year-old husband and father of two, Rex Heuermann, was charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman. Their remains were discovered within a quarter of a mile of one another covered in burlap along Ocean Parkway on Long Island’s South Shore in 2010. Heuermann is also suspected of other murders including Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

Kerri’s father Dennis Rader was 59, the president of the church, and married with two children when he was arrested in 2005. He was later charged with the murders of 10 people in Wichita and Park City, Kansas between 1974 and 1991. He is suspected of others. Rader centered himself in the Gilgo Beach Murders on Friday 21 July, writing a letter to Fox News Digital laying out similarities between himself and Rex Heuermann.

Laura believes men like Rader and Heuermann hide in plain sight and are overlooked for similar reasons. Just like what’s happening with the Heuermann case right now, when Rader was arrested, his family, friends, and co-workers were shocked to discover that the serial killer police were hunting had been among them, going to work, raising his children, and acting ‘normal.’ But Laura doesn’t buy into that. She believes we are asking the wrong questions and that we must use the framework of coercive control and make the invisible visible.

Whilst working at the FBI in Quantico, Laura continued her research and analysis into serial perpetrators, which included an in-depth case conference with the FBI profiler who played a pivotal role in Dennis Rader’s capture, interviewing Rader for more than 30 hours. One question Laura asked related to domestic abuse and control related behaviours. Laura was informed there was no abuse at home. Now, in this raw and honest interview, Laura finally gets to the bottom of what was really going on at home – and like with many cases, a very different picture emerges when we ask the right questions of the right people.

In this episode, Laura interviews award winning writer and reporter Audrey Gillan about her

remarkable BBC Scotland podcast, Bible John: Creation of a Serial Killer. If you haven’t listened to this 10-part series, you really should.

In the 1960’s Patricia Docker, Jemima MacDonald and Helen Puttock were brutally murdered in Glasgow. You may not be familiar with these names or the women, but it’s a case that has haunted Audrey all her life and it’s an important case for Laura too. Both Audrey and Laura explain why in this episode.

Patricia, Jemima and Helen were strangled and killed after a night out dancing at the Barrowland Ballroom which was located in a mercantile area east of Glasgow’s city centre . Their bodies were discovered just a short distance from their homes. All three women were young mothers of small children.

Laura highlights seven problematic myths regarding the case, which she believes are significant obstructions to solving the murders. Audrey shares what she discovered in the police reports which shocked her and made her question absolutely everything about the case and the original investigation. You won’t want to miss this.

Laura interviews Bill Thomas, brother of Cathy Thomas, and researcher, writer and advocate Kristin Dilley about the brutal murders of Cathy Thomas and Rebecca Dowski and the other three double murders often referred to as the ‘Colonial Parkway Murders.’

From 1986 to 1989 six young people were murdered and two disappeared and the FBI believed it was most likely a serial killer. The cases included Cathy Thomas and Rebecca Dowski who were murdered between October 9/10 1986; David Lee Knobling and Robin Edwards who were found dead on September 23 1987; Richard Keith Call and Cassandra Lee Hailey who disappeared on April 10 1988 and who were never found, and; Daniel Lauer and Annamaria Phelps who disappeared on September 5 1989 and whose bodies were later found under a blanket, near a rest stop.

In this episode, Laura, Bill and Kristin discuss Cathy and Becki’s victimology including Cathy’s determination to excel at all that she did, including her mental fortitude to succeed and graduate from the US Naval Academy in the second class to admit women, making her one of the true trail blazers in the service.

We also start to dive in to whether these four cases are linked and whether there are links to Lollie Winans and Julie Williams’ murders given the similarities in victimology and possible targeting to Cathy and Rebecca and that the murders happened less than 200 miles away in isolated locations and on long holiday weekends. Coincidence? Join us as we dive into the difficult and complex details of each case.

Laura and Kathryn discuss Kara Robinson’s abduction and rape by predatory stalker, Richard Marc Evonitz. Evonitz abducted Kara in the blink of an eye, in broad daylight, and no-one knew it had even happened.

Evonitz was a prolific serial perpetrator who targeted, stalked, abducted, and raped women. Laura believes Kara’s abduction seemed much more an in the moment, opportunistic attack. Kara managed to escape due to her resilience and quick thinking. Laura and Kathryn break down Evonitz’s behaviour and the timeline and discuss whether he murdered Lollie and Julie as well as other abductions and murders that might be linked including Alicia Showalter Reynolds, Anne McDaniel, Sofia Silva, Kristin and Kati Lisk and the double murder of Cathy Thomas and Becky Dowski.

In May 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, two skilled and competent backcountry leaders, entered Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park for a week-long camping trip. The free-spirited and remarkable young couple had met and fallen in love the previous summer while working at a world-renowned outdoor program for women.

Lollie and Julie pitched their tent in a beautiful and remote location close to the river. They were brutally murdered, and their bodies were discovered in their sleeping bags. Their tent had been slashed open and there was some unusual crime scene behaviour as well as paraphernalia left at the crime scene. Their beloved dog, Taj, was also missing. Why were Lollie and Julie targeted? Were they being stalked? When were they killed? How many other murders had occurred in the park? And Virginia? Was this a serial killer?

Laura interviews Diana Parkes, Joanna’s mother and Hetti Nanton, Joanna’s best friend and chair of the national domestic violence charity, Refuge.

Joanna Simpson was brutally killed on October 31, 2010, by her ex-husband Robert Brown a British Airways pilot, one week before their divorce would be finalized at the High Court. Brown dropped the two children home. He took a claw hammer with him and bludgeoned Jo to death, hitting her at least 14 times.

At Brown’s trial, the court heard how he bundled the children into his car and wrapped Jo’s body in plastic sheeting he had brought with him along with a white overall suit. He placed her in the boot before driving to Windsor Park where he had already dug a grave and put down a makeshift coffin.

After nearly 15 hours of deliberation, the jury cleared Brown of murder. He was convicted for manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility and sentenced to 26 years, the maximum sentence allowed. He will be released after serving just 13 years in 2023.

Listen as we discuss the case, the events leading up to Jo being brutally killed, the details about how Jo was killed and what happened afterwards in terms of Brown’s post offence behaviour and the trial. We discuss the prosecution’s case and how the family were treated both inside and outside court.

Laura also shares critical insight about the case and Brown’s mindset, which she has seen repeatedly amongst men who kill their former or current partners. This insight is essential if we are to prevent murders in slow motion like Jo’s and effectively prosecute men like Brown.

In this episode, Laura analyses the most significant aspects of the state’s motion report requesting that Adnan Syed’s conviction be vacated. The report was filed on September 14 2022 and it ultimately led to Adnan Syed being freed on Monday 19th September, after 23 years in prison.

Adnan Syed was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and false imprisonment of his 18 year old ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in 1999. Adnan has steadfastly maintained his innocence and denied any involvement in Hae’s murder.

The case was subject to the podcast “Serial” which debuted in 2014 and has been downloaded millions of times. Also, props to Undisclosed podcast Season 1 ‘The State v. Adnan Syed’ with Rabia Chaudry, Susan Stimpson and Colin Miller goes through the case in painstaking detail and highlights key information that was omitted by Serial. I also recommend you watch the HBO’s The Case Against Adnan Syed.

This is an incredibly quick turnaround which is extremely rare in cases. Hae Min Lee’s family were represented by Hae’s younger brother, Young Lee, after Judge Phinn ordered a 30 minute recess in court to give him an opportunity to speak. When 22-year-old Gabby Petito disappeared in September 2021 there was national and international media coverage, and rightly so. However, when her body was found in Wyoming it brought into sharp relief the 715 indigenous people, 466 who were women, who went missing in Wyoming a decade before Gabby who received little, if any, attention in the news or on social media.

Laura wants to help change this. In this episode Laura interviews Cara Chambers, Director of the Division of Victim Services at the Office of the Attorney General of Wyoming and Dr Emily Grant Senior Research Scientist at the University of Wyoming. Both Cara and Dr Emily work on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Task Force in Wyoming.

We spotlight the findings from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Wyoming State-wide report authored by Dr Emily Grant. Laura highlights a hot spot in the report which warrants further investigation, and discusses a number of cases including 23-year-old Jade Wagon who was killed on January 21 2020 one year after her sister, Jocelyn Watt and her fiancé, Rudy Perez were murdered on January 5 2019, and; 28 year old Dawn Michelle Day who was discovered floating in a Fremont County waterway in Wyoming on 21 July 2012. Maria was brutally murdered between December 16-19 2008. She had reported Marc Chivers, a man she had had a relationship with to Essex Police. Maria told Police that Chivers had assaulted her both physically and sexually. She also reported that he broke into her house and stole her medication. You'll hear the details of what happened in the episode.

Zoe’s legal team say she has a strong case. If she can raise the money this legal case could have far reaching implications in helping thousands of women failed by the police get compensation, and more importantly, force a change in attitude and practice from the police who will finally be held to account.
