Why must the righteous suffer? This is a question at the heart of The Story of Job. On this special episode, we seek out the answer through the visionary artwork of William Blake. In 1805, William Blake was commissioned by his patron and friend, Thomas Butts, to create a set of watercolor illustrations depicting key scenes from The Book of Job. Blake clearly resonated with this 2,600 year old story—there are no other Biblical narratives which he dedicated so much time and energy to. What value did Blake see in The Book of Job? Let's find out. Why did William Blake create his own gods? What does Blake's cosmology teach us about humanity? What role does Blake's visual art serve in fulfilling his creative vision?
Join me on a journey to The Morgan Library & Museum, where we view Blake's original manuscripts & artworks, to answer these questions.

William Blake is considered one of the greatest artists and poets of the English language, yet he lived most of his life in poverty. Why? Many of his acquaintances considered him mad while friends who knew his art considered him 'brilliantly mad'. What was so different about Blake?
Join me on this William Blake series as we pry open the mind of this celebrated creative genius to find the true meaning of his enigmatic works.

Dr. Carl Jung began to have apocalyptic visions in October 1913 which compelled him to engage a dialogue with his unconscious. In the following months, he transcribed these experiences in his personal journals (Black Books). When World War 1 started in June 1914, Jung realized that his visions, dreams, and meditations may have been precognitions of the impending war.
On this minisode, we explore the writings and journals of Dr. Carl Jung to help us better understand this pivotal moment in Jung's life and how it inspired his later psychological theories.

Where language breaks, art begins. Language routinely fails us in conversations about art and creativity. In the following essay, I elaborate on the reason for this problem and offer three terms which can help give more depth and clarity to our discussions of art.
The three primary experiential aspects of art:
Art-making: verb, a creative act that results in an art-object.
Art-object: noun, a material or immaterial byproduct of art-making.
Artessence: noun, the state of mind of an art experience.

All creative geniuses have visions throughout their lives which guide their work. What does it mean to have a vision? How does a vision differ from a goal? How do you discover your own vision? Let's talk about it.
This insight developed from recent studies and reflections I've been engaged in, it is part of my current attempt to define creative genius through several traits which all creative geniuses seem to share. In searching through all of the insights gathered over five years of doing this show, I've noticed that all of the figures we have covered have a vision which, in some way, guides their creativity.
I hope you find this minisode inspiring.
-----------
Here are the questions mentioned in the episode. I recommend getting a journal or opening up a notepad on your computer and answering them to compel a vision of your own. Feel free to be as prosaic and lengthy as you like.
Even if the process of answering these doesn’t lead to a new vision immediately, the act of dialogue with your inner world will jumpstart something which will.

Join me for a journey back to a time when alchemy was revered by Kings & Queens and practiced in the courts of nobles. A time when Prague was the alchemical capital of the world–drawing occultists to it from all of Europe, and ruled by a King who supported esoteric spiritual practices. Along the way we will find direct parallels between Jung's Red Book and the work of the alchemists, leading us to Jung's most misunderstood psychotherapeutic method: active imagination.
We will also explore these questions: What can a two hundred year old Grimm's fairy tale teach us about alchemy? What value did Dr. Carl Jung see in fairy tales? Why is a scholarly mind one of alchemy's virtues? Is Hermes-Mercurius the God of Alchemy?

What is the hidden link between play and creativity? Why do we discourage adults from play? How do you heal your relationship with play and improve your creativity?
As we journey from childhood into adulthood, the world demands that we abandon play and daydream–relegating them to the domain of childhood. But of the many sacrifices we all must make in our transition into adulthood, this sacrifice is the most damaging to our creativity. It's time we heal our relationship with play and reimagine its place in our daily lives. On this Creativity Tip minisode we attempt to do just that.

Beneath the surface of Western history––deep within its cavernous tunnels––flows a river of gold.
On this episode we explore the essential concepts of alchemy, alchemical artwork, Jung's theory regarding the projection of unconscious material, inexplicable dreams with alchemical symbolism, the paradox of consciousness & matter, and the unique role of revelation in alchemy. In the end, we return to The Red Book to track down a special passage which seems to prove Dr. Jung tapped into alchemy through his active imagination method seven years before officially studying it.

What is alchemy? Where does it come from? When did it begin? What does Jung find in alchemy? What does it represent to him that is so important, so profound, that it causes him to abandon his inspired work of the Red Book? It’s time to find out.

This is a special guided meditation episode which takes you on a journey to meet your inner child and start a dialogue with them. It is inspired by Dr. Carl Jung's active imagination method.
My hope is that this meditation will introduce you to a new way of relating to your inner world. A way that is playful and engages one of the most powerful and seemingly overlooked tools humans have: imagination.
In becoming familiar with the method of active imagination, and how to engage a dialogue with a part of your unconscious, we will have a way to not only understand Jung's theories in the following Jung & Alchemy series, but to also experience them.

Why do we start journals with so much enthusiasm, only to lose interest within a month? What is the point of a good journal? What are the profound benefits of journaling and how do we engage them?
On this Creativity Tip, we explore the possibility that we are all journaling wrong. Pop culture has handicapped our ability to journal effectively, romanticizing the 'art of journaling' and externalizing our attention away from inner life. We explore two of the most important experiences a good journal provides: self-excavation and self-conversation. And finally, how a new type of journal engages both: The Garbage Journal.

This essay was inspired by the listeners of Creative Codex. It is dedicated to all the young artists who are unsure of their place in the modern world, and all the well intentioned parents, who want to encourage their child's creative journey. To them I say: art is not an option–it is a necessity.
You can read this essay here: https://mjdorian.com/essays/
In the process of writing Letter to a Young Artist in the 21st Century, I realized 7 Universal Truths of Art. These are explored throughout the essay, they are included here for ease of reference:

Hieronymus Bosch created one of the strangest and most talked about paintings in art history: The Garden of Earthly Delights. But there is a riddle hidden in the garden: is it an idyllic paradise or a sinful false paradise? On this episode, we will dive deeper than ever before to search for the answer.
Other questions we will explore on this episode: what makes The Garden of Earthly Delights a work of creative genius? Why do some historians consider it a work of madness? And what do we really know about the mysterious painter: Hieronymus Bosch?

Today in Creative History: August 18th, 1969, Jimi Hendrix plays a visionary rendition of The Star Spangled Banner for a stunned audience at Woodstock. It's a performance that will go down in history as the musical climax of a tumultuous decade in the USA. Decades later, this rendition still sounds as startling to our ears as it must have to the tens of thousands in attendance.

At this moment, strewn across the world, there exist over 7,200 pages of Leonardo da Vinci's notes. These pages are not only echoes of a distant past–embodying the inquisitive spirit of the Renaissance–according to scholars and historians they represent the 'greatest record of curiosity ever created'.

This is a Guided Meditation episode about one of the most perplexing aspects of creativity: Intuition. What is it and how do we engage it more effectively?
This meditation is based on a technique I've been developing called: Intuition Mapping. Grab a cup of coffee / tea, and give this guided meditation a test drive to see what compulsions are pushing and pulling you.
Some helpful notes:
• Motivations push you. Intentions direct you. Intuitions pull you.
• To find your motivations ask: what is pushing you?
• To find your intentions ask: what are you pushing yourself toward?
• To find your intuitions ask: what is pulling you? What is gently tugging at the fabric of your being?
• Intuitions often feel like something is pulling your neural network toward a certain direction, it’s a feeling to move in a certain direction. One which you often can’t always explain with logic.

Leonor Fini did not limit art to the confines of the frame, for her, it spilled out into all of life itself. Every year, Fini and her two lovers, Stanislao & Kot, would host soirees at an abandoned monastery on the island of Corsica. If you were invited, it meant you were part of her inner circle. The only requirement was: come dressed in a mask and costume–the more elaborate, the better.
Join me on a masquerade through Fini's imagination. Along the way we will witness a battle of wits between Dalí and Fini, we will also appreciate selected artworks from Fini’s mid-to-late career and interview Lissa Rivera, the curator for the first Leonor Fini retrospective exhibition in the USA.

On this episode, we will conclusively answer this question: why was Gnosticism so important to Dr. Carl Jung?
Along the way, we will dive deep into Sermons 5 thru 7 to answer these questions: what is the relationship between spirituality and sexuality? How does Jung's libido theory differ from Freud's libido theory? What is the significance of the dove and the serpent in religious symbolism? According to the Seven Sermons to the Dead: what is the goal of life?
As mentioned in the episode–here is Jung's mysterious anagram–which is found on the bottom of the final page of the Seven Sermons to the Dead:
NAHTRIHECCUNDE
GAHINNEVERAHTUNIN
ZEHGESSURKLACH
ZUNNUS.

When the Nazi Party came to power in Germany, in 1933, one of their first goals was to reshape culture by force. The Nazis organized book burnings, stormed artist studios, confiscating work they disagreed with, and fired contemporary artists from teaching positions in universities. The goal was to place limits on human expression–an ominous display for what was to come.
Visit the companion gallery for this episode here: https://mjdorian.com/dangerous/
The celebrated 1800's German poet, Heinrich Heine, wrote: "where books are burned, there too, people will burn."
On this episode, we explore the Degenerate Art Exhibition of 1937, otherwise known as Entartete Kunst. The intended goal of the exhibit was to insult and ridicule the featured artists and kill modern art. Making it clearly known to the German public that the Nazi Party was forbidding any form of abstraction in painting, film, sculpture, or music.
The suppression or censorship of art is a symptom that something is desperately wrong in the cultural fabric of a society. What happened to the artists featured in the exhibition? Did they continue making art? Did they flee or stay and protest? Why is art so dangerous?

In 1916, Dr. Carl Jung wrote his most mystifying work: The Seven Sermons to the Dead. In this episode, we continue our quest to understand it the way Jung understood it, exploring Sermons 3 & 4. We will attempt to answer these questions: Who is Abraxas? Why is he a god above gods? Who is Basilides? Why does Jung credit him as the writer of the Seven Sermons? And what leads Jung to have this creative breakthrough? Does it come from a point of inner turmoil or inspired grace? It’s time we find out.

Our story begins in the late 1800's, with one of history's most beloved artists: Vincent van Gogh. In between bouts of debilitating psychotic episodes, Vincent paints 141 masterful paintings during his yearlong stay in St. Paul's mental asylum. All of these 141 paintings are made while he is of 'sound' mind... except one. This is a special video episode about that self portrait. Is it the most disturbing painting of all time? Let's find out.

In 1916, Dr. Carl Jung experienced a strange phenomenon that possessed him with tremendous creative force. The experience inspired him to write a philosophical & psychological scripture he called: The Seven Sermons to the Dead.
This is Jung's most mystifying work. It appears in the final chapter of The Red Book, and it embodies the culmination of Jung's numinous inner explorations from 1913 - 1916.
On this special episode, we will dive deep into Sermons One and Two, to attempt to understand this rare creative work the way that Jung understood it. Along the way we will delve into Gnostic scriptures which likely inspired Jung, explore key Jungian theories which are embodied in the Seven Sermons, and try to understand the larger significance of this esoteric literary work.

Does boredom play an important role in creativity? If so, is technology ridding our lives of boredom at a perilous cost? On this Creativity Tip minisode, the truth gets 'curiouser and curiouser.' Along the way we explore research in neuroscience regarding the Default Mode Network, and psychological research that potentially proves the link between boredom and creativity.

• Turn your phone notifications off. Put your devices to the side.
• Stare out of a window. And let your mind wander for five minutes.

On this episode we explore the tragic death of Vincent van Gogh. We seek to answer, once and for all, was it: suicide or homicide? In the process we discover that the two popular theories explaining Vincent's death are deeply flawed, and a new theory emerges.
This episode follows the events of that fateful day through Theo's perspective. After a thorough investigation, we explore the aftermath, and meet the woman who made Vincent van Gogh a household name: Johanna van Gogh-Bonger.

What is the 10,000 Hours Rule? How can you apply it in your life?
I first stumbled on this theory in the book: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. The basic premise is this: to achieve mastery in any skill that requires complex cognitive processes, you need to put in roughly 10,000 hours of effort, spread across a 10 year span.
In other words, if you want to become a master at something, you will have to clock in about 10,000 hours into that domain. That could be anything from cooking, computer coding, rapping, martial arts, piano playing, oil painting, and so on.
Since that book, the theory has been a bit more fleshed out by more recent studies, that bring 'deliberate practice' into the equation. In this special Creativity Tip episode I explain and explore the implications of this compelling theory. And most importantly: how to apply it in your life.

On this special episode, we dive into the full truth about the most infamous event in art history: Vincent van Gogh's ear incident. The 'ear incident' serves as a catalyst event, which signals the onset of a mental affliction which will torment Vincent van Gogh for his final three years. Paradoxically, at the same time his mental health is in decline, his paintings are showing the signs of a creative genius.

Can madness and genius be contained in one individual? Can psychosis and the rarest artistry be contained in one mind?
These contradictions pervade the story of Vincent van Gogh. And in the final three years of his life, they culminate in a whirlwind.
You may think you know Vincent, you may have heard about him on a TV show or a podcast. But not like this.
Over the next three episodes, we will explore Van Gogh’s personal letters, doctor’s reports, police reports, and family letters, to paint a vivid picture of Vincent in his three final years, these are the years that produced his most famous and beloved works, and the years in which Vincent’s final tragic descent begins.

Is there a line between genius and madness? What is the difference between the madness of artists and the madness of genius? This is a brief opening lecture which I presented for an event called The Madness of Genius, which was held on April 20th, 2021, on the Clubhouse app. This was the first event held by the Creative Codex Club, and featured two special guest speakers: Emily Dickinson scholar, Justin Horm, and holistic psychiatrist, Dr. Kelley O'Donnell.

...To be an artist means to be possessed by something unreasonable; to be devoted to something entirely impractical...
...Artists are the only people in the world whom we give the rare permission to be — strange. We expect them to be bold. In fact, we even need them to be. Because when we see an artist embodying something strange and bold, it gives us the permission to be ourselves. It presents us an opportunity to accept the parts of our psychology we often keep in the shadows...

On this Creativity Tip minisode I guide you through a thought exercise that re-frames how you view the world. At what point is inspiration plagiarism? If an existing work of art inspires you to create something, where do you draw the line of ownership? Is it even reasonable to assume a line should be drawn?

The life of bluesman Robert Johnson is a tangle of myth, genius, and tragedy. He was so brilliant that after his murder in 1938, the only sensible explanation was that he sold his soul to the devil.
On this two part special, we untangle the lies, and inside of Robert Johnson’s life we discover the obsessive nature of creative genius. But even in that story, the devil still plays a part.

It is highly recommended you listen to this meditation with headphones.
This is a Guided Meditation that takes you on a journey into your Inner Sanctum. Your Inner Sanctum is a place deep inside your mind, a place of great peace and potential located in your unconscious mind. Enthusiasts of Carl Jung will notice this meditation is very similar to the process of active imagination that Jung often writes about.
This meditation is not aligned with any particular tradition or religion. It can be practiced by anyone. This guided meditation is not hypnosis, it maintains your conscious awareness while guiding you into a deep inner place from which you can perform inner work and exploration. This result is achieved through breathing work, visualization, and sound design.

In 1913, Carl Gustav Jung devised a meditation method that allowed him to reach his imaginative unconscious, experiencing waking 'visions' that led to his most enigmatic work: The Red Book.
I have tracked down his descriptions of this method through his later lectures, and have created an approximation of what Jung was doing. Included here is a guided meditation episode for your exploration of your own imaginative unconscious.
Please follow all the steps accordingly! (DO NOT operate any machinery / vehicles while exploring this method. And consult with your therapist if you have a history of schizophrenia or psychotic disorder.) I would love to hear about your experiences when you try it! In this mini-episode we will be exploring. . . your brain! I will guide you in bringing your body to a sleeping state, while your conscious mind is still awake and in control. This will allow you to explore a very special and unique point between waking & dreaming, which psychologists call the Hypnagogic State.
We recently explored this idea in the Salvador Dali episode (Episode 7). And now you can try it out yourself!
Caution: DO NOT attempt this meditation while driving or operating any machine, as the meditation requires you to close your eyes and will induce a state on the threshold of sleep.
