When the cave is ambushed by fierce corpses, Wei Wuxian turns himself into living bait to save the others. After they are saved, they all decide to go to the nearby Lotus Pier until their spiritual energy returns. As they travel by boat, the juniors discover that Wen Ning has secretly tagged along, because he recognizes LSZ and wants to speak to him. JL is bitter that people are on Wen Ning’s side, since he is responsible for his father’s death. When they finally arrive at lotus pier, Jiang Cheng is told that two women are waiting to speak to him. After hearing their story, he invites them to speak to the other sect leaders. They find out from the woman Sisi that Jin Guangyao orchestrated his father’s death. She was then imprisoned for 11 years until a mysterious savior freed her.

S3 E34 - MDZS ch 19

A thousand cultivators are at the burial mounds to confront Wei Wuxian. They don't listen when he swears that he isn't responsible for the junior’s kidnappings and the fierce corpses gathered on the mountain. Suddenly, the cultivators lose all the spiritual energy, right as the horde of corpses attack. Wei Wuxian tells them that they should seek shelter in his cave, but Su She argues that it’s a trap. Nie Huaisang and the juniors convince everyone to go inside, and Lan Qiren fixes an old array to keep the corpses out. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji reveal that Su She and Jin Guangyao planned for everyone to lose their powers and die on the mountain. Su She manages to escape with a transportation talisman after destroying the protection array. After a long battle, the cultivators manage to kill off all the corpses, but are completely exhausted. At that moment, a new wave of corpses arrive.

S3 E33 - MDZS ch 18

Wen Qing and Wen Ning offer to turn themselves in and take responsibility for the deaths at qiongqi path. Wei Wuxian protests, but Wen Qing uses a needle to immobilize his body for the next three days. When Wei Wuxian can move again he goes to the jin sect to find their bodies, but instead he finds out that Wen Ning went berserk and killed 30 lan disciples before being put down and burned. As a result, the major clans plan to meet at nightless city for a pledge ceremony, where they vow to kill the rest of the wen clan along with Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian realizes that the entire world is against him and goes to nightless city for revenge. But in the middle of the battle, JiangYanLi appears and pushes him out of the way from a sword, and ends up stabbed in the throat. When Wei Wuxian sees that his sister has died, he loses his mind and brings together the yin tiger tally.

S3 E32 - MDZS ch 18

Lan Wangji leaves the burial mounds, and realizes that this is goodbye. When Wei Wuxian returns to the wens, he is surprised that they threw together a small banquet celebration for him. He thinks that the path into darkness isn't that dark after all. A few days later, Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli secretly visit him on Jiang Yanli’s wedding day so that she can show him her bridal robes, since Wei Wuxian is not invited to the wedding. She also asks him to name her future unborn child. Much later, Wei Wuxian is invited to her son's one-month celebration. Wei Wuxian is excited about his gift that he personally made for him. However, along the way they are ambushed by Jin Zixun, who accuses him of cursing him and destroys Wei Wuxian’s gift. Jin Zixuan appears to stop the fight, but Wei Wuxian loses control of Wen Ning and he kills Jin Zixuan.

S3 E31 - MDZS ch16-17

Jiang Cheng visits Wei Wuxian in the burial mounds and urges Wei Wuxian to abandon the Wens to save himself. Wei Wuxian refuses and offers to cut ties with the Jiang sect publicly so that Jiang Cheng will no longer get grief from the other sects. After many months pass, Wei Wuxian takes Wen Yuan into town for some errands, when they run into Lan Wangji. Wen Yuan is enamored by Lan Wangji who buys him toys and food. During their dinner, Wei Wuxian is alerted of trouble in the burial mounds and quickly leaves. Lan Wangji goes with him, and they discover that Wen Ning broke free of his suppression talismans. During their fight, Wen Ning manages to regain his consciousness and the Wen cultivators all celebrate. Wei Wuxian shows Lan Wangji his cave and living situation, but Lan Wangji can’t handle it and turns to leave. Wei Wuxian and Wen Yuan follow after him.

S3 E30 - MDZS ch 16

During a banquet, WWX enters uninvited and demands to speak to Jin Zixun about the location of Wen Ning, and insults JGS by comparing the Jin clan to the Wen Clan. After being threatened by Chenqing, Jin Zixun reveals that Wen Ning is in a labor camp on Qiongqi path, but by the time WWX and WQ arrive, it is too late and Wen Ning is dead. WWX summons him back as a corpse and orders him to take revenge on the overseers who killed him. He also frees the other Wen cultivators and takes them to the burial mounds. The other sects immediately gather for an emergency meeting to discuss WWX’s actions. JC is forced to apologize for the overseers that were killed. JGS argues that WWX is undermining JC’s position as head of the sect and disrespecting him. Meanwhile, mianmian is fed up with everyone’s bullshit and defects from the sect.

The Jin clan is angry that WWX used demonic cultivation during the night hunt competition. But JYL defends him, pointing out that her brother didn't break any rules. Two months later, LWJ visits Yunmeng, and WWX invites him for a drink. However, they end up arguing when LWJ sees WWX associating with ghosts. WWX goes back home to complain to JC, and JYL indulges his childishness. WWX remembers the day he first came to Lotus Pier, when JC was forced to get rid of all his dogs due to WWX’s phobia. JC becomes jealous when his father gives WWX more attention, and kicks him out of the room. Fearful of dogs, WWX climbs a tree to sleep in, but falls and hurts his leg. When JYL carries him back home, they run into JC who has also injured himself looking for WWX in the dark. Back in the present, WWX runs into a filthy woman he recognizes right outside of lotus pier.

S3 E28 - MDZS ch 15

Wei Wuxian frees all the juniors from the cave, but when they leave they are confronted by a mob of angry cultivators. They corner Wei Wuxian and demand justice for his evil deeds. Flashing back to the past, all the cultivators have gathered together for a Siege Hunt competition. When Jin Zixuan shows off his archery skills, Wei Wuxian one-ups him by doing his archery blindfolded. He even enters the competition blindfolded, until a stranger takes advantage and steals his first kiss. While looking for the stranger, Wei Wuxian runs into Lan Wangji punching trees. Suddenly Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan appear, and he spies on them making awkward conversation. Wei Wuxian remembers how terribly Jin Zixuan treated his sister and jumps in to intervene. However their fighting attracts the attention of the other Jin cultivators and they use it as an excuse to attack Wei Wuxian and accuse him of stealing all the prey on the hunt.

S3 E25 - MDZS ch12

Wen Ning hides Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng in Yiling. Wen Qing discovers them and tells them that they have to leave, or else she and Wen Ning will get punished. When Jiang Cheng wakes up, he reveals that Wen Zhuliu has destroyed his golden core, and he becomes hysterical and suicidal. Wen Qing is forced to use a silver needle to keep him unconscious. Three days later, Wei Wuxian leaves with Jiang Cheng and wakes him up, promising to take him to Baoshan Sanren to heal his golden core. Jiang Cheng agrees and goes to Baoshan Sanren’s mountain for 7 days. Afterwards, Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian are supposed to meet in town, but Wei Wuxian is kidnapped by Wen Chao and thrown into the burial mounds. Three months later, Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng discover that Wei Wuxian is alive and has been torturing and murdering Wen cultivators in an evil way. After attacking Wen Chao and Wen zhuliu, Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji reveal themselves to Wei Wuxian and they have a gloomy and awkward reunion.

In the past, Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji are reunited with Wei Wuxian. However, Lan Wangji is horrified that Wei Wuxian is using unorthodox methods and asks him to return to gusu with him. But Wei Wuxian assumes that Lan Wangji is trying to arrest him and refuses. Jiang Cheng also adds that Lan Wangji has no business meddling in their family affairs. Lan Wangji has no choice but to back down and leave. Back in the present, Wei Wuxian finds himself in Gusu for healing. Lan Xichen says that he trusts Jin Guangyao as much as Lan Wangji trusts Wei Wuxian, and without proof he will not change his mind. When Wei Wuxian explains that the song Jin Guangyao played for Nie Mingjue is suspicious, Lan Xichen takes them to the secret library for research. Lan Wangji finds a music book where a page has been torn out, and Wei Wuxian theorizes that the missing page is what Jin Guangyao used to kill Nie Mingjue. However the song must be tested for proof, and Lan Xichen volunteers to test it on himself. When Lan Xichen and Wei Wuxian return to the cottage, Lan Xichen reveals the secret of his parent’s past.

Jin Guangyao visits Lan Xichen and tells him that Wei Wuxian has been digging up graves to build an undead army. Lan Xichen knows that Wei Wuxian is not responsible, but decides to go back to the Jin Clan with Jin Guangyao to determine his innocence. Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji head to the burial mounds to investigate the situation. Along the way, Wei Wuxian endlessly teases Lan Wangji, and even daydreams about a future where they live together on a farm. Eventually, they run into Wen Ning, who has been following them secretly. The three of them enter the burial mounds, and discover that all the junior cultivators from various families have been kidnapped and taken to the Demon Quelling Cave. While tied up, Jin Chan starts up a fight with Jin Ling after insulting Wei Wuxian. Lan Sizhui tries to mediate, but gets caught up in the brawl too. To stop the fight, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji step forward, to the Lan juniors delight!

S3 E24 - MDZS Ch12 deepdive

Lotus Pier erupts into chaos as Wang Lingjiao summons Wen Zhuliu and an army of Wen disciples to attack. In a desperate move, Madam Yu grabs Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, and forces them to escape alone. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian are unwilling, but they're tied down by Zidian and unable to break free. When the ropes finally loosen and they turn their boat back to Lotus Pier, they see that the Wens have completely taken over and left a pile of Jiang bodies in the courtyard. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian have no choice but to travel to their mother’s family for help. On the way, Jiang Cheng disappears, and Wei Wuxian returns to Lotus Pier alone, thinking that Jiang Cheng went back without him. There, he runs into Wen Ning who explains that Jiang Cheng has been captured. Despite Wei Wuxian’s animosity, Wen Ning helps Wei Wuxian recover Jiang Cheng and escape.

S3 E23 - MDZS ch 12 deepdive

Wei Wuxian is rescued from the cave by Jiang Cheng, and returns to Lotus Pier to heal. When he wakes up, he is disappointed to hear that Lan Wangji has returned to the Cloud Recesses. Jiang Fengmian visits him and praises him for defeating an ancient yao, causing Jiang Cheng to feel insecure. But then Madam Yu appears, and criticizes Wei Wuxian for antagonizing the Wens, and then criticizes her husband for neglecting his own son. Jiang Cheng is horrified and Wei Wuxian comforts him, vowing to stay by his side as his right-hand man when Jiang Cheng becomes the sect leader. A few days later, Wang Lingjiao appears at Lotus Pier to seek revenge against Wei Wuxian. She demands Madam Yu punish him and cut off his right arm. Madam Yu whips him but stops when she discovers that the Wens intend to turn Lotus Pier into an overwatch office. Furious, she attacks Wang Lingjiao and is about to kill her, but Wang Lingjiao calls for Wen Zhuliu to save her.

S3 E22 - MDZS ch11

The wen clan block off the cave entrance, sealing the junior disciples inside. Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian, and Jiang Cheng discover that there is a second entrance at the bottom of the lake, and help the others escape. But Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are left behind when a Lan disciple accidentally shoots Wei Wuxian’s in the arm with an arrow. After three days of healing and no sign of help, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian decide to kill the beast in the lake in order to escape. They manage to defeat it using the Lan clan’s secret killing technique, and a sword filled with resentment that Wei Wuxian finds inside the monster’s shell. Unfortunately the exit to the cave has been caved in from the battle, and Wei Wuxian runs a fever from his injuries. Wei Wuxian complains of boredom while he’s recovering, so Lan Wangji hums him a song to help him sleep.

S3 E21 - MDZS ch11 deepdive

In a flashback, the Wen clan demands all the other clans to send 20 of their disciples to the Wen clan for re-education. JC is forced to go, but WWX offers to go as well. At the re-education camp, Wen Chao takes away everyone’s weapons and forces them to night hunt for him. On one night hunt, he forces everyone to climb into a cave to find a mysterious monster. When the monster doesn’t appear, Wang Lingjiao suggests they sacrifice Mianmian to lure the monster with blood. LWJ and JZX defend Mianmian, while WWX captures Wen Chao as hostage. But just then, a giant serpent-turtle monster appears. During the chaos, Wang Lingjiao burns WWX with a branding iron. All the wens fly to safety on their swords, but cut down the vines of the cave entrance, trapping the other juniors inside.

Jin Guangyao promises to kill Xue Yang within two months, to appease Nie Mingjue’s anger. But before two months can pass, Nie Mingjue suddenly goes into a qi deviation and attacks his own brother. Wei Wuxian is pulled out of empathy after that, and returns to Lan Wangji and his body. Together with Lan Xichen they confront Jin Guangyao about Nie Mingjue’s head and Qin Su hiding inside the hidden chamber. But to their surprise, Jin Guangyao invites them into the chamber and Nie Mingjue’s head is nowhere to be found. On top of that, Qin Su suddenly commits suicide in front of everyone. Jin Guangyao uses that chance to accuse Mo Xuanyu of orchestrating this situation for revenge. When Wei Wuxian uses his sword Suibian to defend himself, he accidentally reveals his identity as the Yiling Patriarch. A fight breaks out, but Lan Wangji manages to help him escape. Before they leave, Jin Ling confronts him and stabs him in the stomach. When Wei Wuxian wakes up, he’s being carried on Lan Wangji’s back and he remembers an incident where he carried Lan Wangji in the past.

S3 E19 - MDZS ch 10 deepdive

During the sunshot campaign, Nie Mingjue is captured by the Wen Clan, and Nie Mingjue discovers that Meng Yao has been working for Wen Ruohan as his right hand man. Nie Mingjue tries to attack, but Wen Ruohan is too strong. But to his surprise, Meng Yao suddenly murders Wen Ruohan and helps Nie Mingjue escape. Nie Mingjue still doesn't trust him, but Lan Xichen arrives to explain that Meng Yao has been working as a spy and helped them win the war with his secret intelligence. After the war ends, Meng Yao is renamed Jin Guangyao and he swears brotherhood with Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue. Lan Xichen teaches Jin Guangyao the song of clarity to play for Nie Mingjue, hoping this will repair their relationship. Unfortunately, Nie Mingjue doesn't trust Jin Guangyao after finding out that he saved the murderous Xue Yang from a death sentence. In a fit of anger, he kicks Jin Guangyao down the stairs of carp tower. But the next day, Jin Guangyao arrives at the Nie sect. Nie Mingjue is training Nie Huaisang, but Nie Huaisang abandons his training when he sees that Jin Guangyao has come to visit.

S3 E18 - MDZS ch10 deepdive

Qin Su receives a letter from a mysterious person that reveals a secret about Jin Guangyao so sickening that she becomes ill and can’t stand the sight of him. Jin Guangyao paralyzes her and brings her to a secret chamber. Wei Wuxian follows them inside, in a paperman body, and discovers that Jin Guangyao has kept all his old manuscripts as war prizes. He also discovered the sealed head of Nie Mingjue, which drags him into a forced empathy spell. In Nie Mingjue’s memories, he meets Jin Guangyao when he was Meng Yao. Nie Mingjue helps Meng Yao with a letter of recommendation so that he can join the Jin Clan during the sunshot campaign. But Meng Yao is ignored by his father, and is caught by Nie Mingjue murdering his superior. He manages to trick Nie Mingjue and run away, but Nie Mingjue vows to kill him if he sees him again.

S3 E17 - MDZS ch 9-10 deepdive

Wei Wuxian remembers how he pulled off Lan Wangji’s forehead ribbon in the past, not realizing that it has an intimate meaning. In the present, the headless dismembered corpse pieces itself back together and tries to attack the Lan Juniors. Lan Wangji arrives in the nick of time with his brother Lan Xichen, and uses musical cultivation to suppress the headless corpse. Wei Wuxian realizes that the corpse is the body of Nie Mingjue, and tells Lan Xichen that the culprit is likely Jin Guangyao. Lan Xichen doesn't believe him, and so they all plan to go to the Jin cultivation conference together to look for clues. After the first night of the conference, Wei Wuxian uses a spell to put his soul in a paper doll to sneak into Jin Guangyao’s home. There he sees Qin Su hysterically throw a suspicious letter on the floor, when someone suddenly appears.

S3 E16 - MDZS ch9 deepdive

Lan Wangji gets drunk a second time, and Wei Wuxian uses it as an opportunity to tease him and ask for his forehead ribbon. But instead, Lan Wangji uses the ribbon to tie Wei Wuxian’s wrists and refuses to undo it. He also drags Wei Wuxian in front of the juniors to show him off. The lan juniors are horrified. When Wei Wuxian manages to drag Lan Wangji upstairs, they end up playing a game of tag around the room. Wei Wuxian punishes Lan Wangji for losing the game by giving him kisses and licking his lips. When Wei Wuxian realizes what he’s done, he’s horrified and guilty and sleeps alone on the floor. In the morning, Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and the lan juniors head to the Tan prefecture to meet up with Zewu-Jun. They pass by a garden with a famous spirit that Wei Wuxian had visited in the past. Wei Wuxian teases the juniors for reading idle stories instead of studying, and then they decide to set up camp in the gardens for the night.

S3 E15 - MDZS ch8 deepdive

Xue Yang’s real identity is exposed and Xiao Xingchen confronts him instead of running away. Xue Yang justifies his killing of the Chang Clan, as revenge against Chang Ping’s father for destroying his pinky as a child. He then tells Xiao Xingchen the truth behind the night hunts, and even reveals that Xiao Xingchen killed his own friend, Song Lan. Xiao Xingchen is so horrified that he takes his own life, shattering his soul. Xue Yang tries to bring Xiao Xingchen back as a fierce corpse, but his soul is too broken to be summoned. In present time, Lan Wangji managed to defeat Xue Yang using A-qing’s help, but not before Xue Yang uses a talisman to shatter A-qing’s soul. But then the mysterious grave digger uses a transportation talisman to steal Xue Yang’s body, to take his yin tiger tally. Wei Wuxian tells the juniors everything he learned in Empathy, which causes them to burst into tears and burn paper money for A-qing and Xiao Xingchen. Xiao Xingchen, Xue Yang, and A-qing end up living together, though A-qing is still suspicious of Xue Yang and follows after them when Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang go night hunting. Wei Wuxian realizes that Xue Yang has tricked Xiao Xingchen and uses corpse poison to turn people into living corpses, and allows Xiao Xingchen to murder them. One day, Song Lan finds A-qing while searching for Xiao Xingchen. A-qing leads him back to their home, only for Song Lan to see Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen playfully bantering together. Song Lan seeks out Xue Yang and demands to know his motives, but Xue Yang tricks him and turns him into a living corpse. At that moment, Xiao Xingchen arrives and unknowingly slaughters his friend. A-qing witnesses all this and gives an excuse to get Xiao Xingchen alone to tell him the truth about Xue Yang. She also reveals that the reason she knows all this is because she lied about being blind, and can actually see!

The Xiao Xingchen that Wei Wuxian and the junior met turns out to be Xue Yang in disguise! He holds the juniors hostage, as he asks Wei Wuxian for help repairing a shattered soul. Wei Wuxian tells him that the soul is impossible to repair. Just then, Lan Wangji appears and shields Wei Wuxian, fighting off Xue Yang with his sword, and killing fierce corpses with his guqin. Wei Wuxian manages to escape and leads the juniors towards the ghost girl, A-qing. The girl brings them to a mortuary where the real Xiao Xingchen lies in a coffin. Wei Wuxian uses the spell empathy to live through the girl’s memories. He finds out that she is an orphan pickpocket, who ran into Xiao Xingchen by chance. She became his companion, when one day they found an injured Xue Yang on the side of the road. Xiao Xingchen didn’t recognize Xue Yang and helped heal him. When Xue Yang and A-qing are left alone, Xue Yang threatens her and sets up a trap.

Wei Wuxian and the juniors are stuck inside the house of a living corpse while they wait for the corpse poison to be cured. While in the house, Wei Wuxian teaches the juniors about the difference between a living corpse and a walking corpse, as well as tricking the juniors into observing a scary looking ghost girl to train their courage. The ghost girl is trying to tell them something, but her tongue has been ripped out. Just then, they see a cultivator getting chased by a group of corpses and sprayed by corpse poison. Wei Wuxian brings paper effigies to life to kill the corpses and bring the cultivator inside. The juniors recognize the cultivator’s sword and ID him as Xiao Xingchen. Just then, a fierce corpse breaks through the roof. Wei Wuxian is unable to control him, and uses his army of paper effigies to pin him to the ground. Using inquiry, they learn that the fierce corpse is Song Lan, and was killed by Xiao Xingchen. And the person controlling him is the Xiao Xingchen they saved earlier.

Following the ghost arm, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji end up in a place called Yi city, but they find it completely empty of inhabitants, and covered in a thick mysterious fog. Suddenly they run into the Lan Juniors and Jin Ling, who have also ended up in Yi City after trailing a mysterious culprit that has been harassing them with dead cats. At that moment, fierce corpses appear, but Wei Wuxian is unable to control them. Could it be the work of the Yin Tiger Tally? The fierce corpses poison some of the Juniors, just as the masked gravedigger appears to try and steal the ghost arm from Wei Wuxian. Lan Wangji attacks the gravedigger and leads him away from the poisoned juniors. Wei Wuxian leads the Juniors into a house with a creepy old lady inside. She leaves to her room, allowing Wei Wuxian, Lan Sizhui, and Jin Ling to cook congee in the kitchen as an antidote to the poison. As they eat and talk, Lan Sizhui suddenly says that the door to the old woman’s room has opened.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wang head to Yueyang to find more information about their Good Buddy. They find out that the Chang Clan was exterminated a decade ago, and go to investigate. Lan Wangji reveals that this was a famous incident that occurred after Wei Wuxian’s death. A man named Xue Yang used the yin tiger tally to exterminate the chang sect, and another man named Xiao Xingchen apprehended him. But the Jin clan shielded him, so Xue Yang blinded Xiao Xingchen’s friend Song Lan in revenge. Many years passed and the incident was forgotten. When LWJ and WWX arrive at the Chang graveyard, they are confronted by a mysterious gravedigger stealing a corpse. WWX tricks him into dropping the corpse, before the grave digger uses a talisman to run away. But to WWX’s surprise the stolen corpse is made of cotton!

Wei Wuxian coerces him back to the inn and teases him with questions. But at 9pm, Lan Wangji determines it is time to sleep and pushes them into bed to sleep. In the morning, Wei Wuxian tricks Lan Wangji into thinking they slept together. Seeing him flustered and angry, Wei Wuxian reveals the truth and gives him space to calm down. Outside the inn, he sees children playing a game about the sunshot campaign and is hit with painful memories. Finally, Lan Wangji joins him and together they head to Shudong, an infamous ghost city.

Wei Wuxian follows after him and is captured by Jiang Cheng . Seeing that Wei Wuxian is afraid of Jin Ling’s dog, Jiang Cheng confirms Wei Wuxian ’s true identity. Jin Ling helps Wei Wuxian escape, but is flustered when Wei Wuxian sincerely thanks him and apologizes to him. Later, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji interrogate Nie Huaisang , the culprit behind the man eating fortress. But it turns out the fortress is actually the burial hall for the Nie Sabers, which need corpses to suppress their bloodshed. The rumors were intentionally spread by the nie sect to keep people away from the fortress.

But then they find out that the fortress walls are stuffed full of corpses!

Later, Wei Wuxian gets into a fist fight with Jin Zixuan and leaves the cloud recesses. Back to the present, the juniors and Wei Wuxian hear an alarm bell ring out. They go to the Nether Room, and Wei Wuxian forces himself inside. There he finds the ghost arm from Mo Manor emitting so much evil energy that the lan elders have all fainted. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian try to play a duet to summon the arm’s soul but it doesn't work because the soul has been split into pieces.

After the hunt is over, Wei Wuxian flirts with the fruit sellers in Caiyi town, which angers Lan Wangji.

He and his peers are visiting cloud recesses for lessons. On his first night, Wei Wuxian gets caught breaking the rules and fights Lan Wangji. Then the next day he causes trouble in class and gets kicked out by Lan Qiren. The students are amazed by his brazenness, but Lan Wangji is not amused.

In the next chapter, Shen Qingqiu finds himself stuck in a dream realm, reliving Luo Binghe’s memories. Luo Binghe holds Shen Qingqiu’s corpse and uses spiritual energy to mend his body. Shen Qingqiu is reminded of a winter night where he also healed a teenage Luo Binghe’s injuries by hugging him and transferring spiritual energy. In the flashback, Luo Binghe squirms and cries out, and Shen Qingqiu wonders if he’s actually terrible at healing.

When Linguang-Jun finally makes his move, Shang Qinghua interrupts and pretends to get revenge on Mobei Jun. He throws out a fire spell that is deadly to Mobei demons, but instead of attacking Mobei Jun, he creates a protective fire circle around them.

However Shen Qingqiu and Liu Qingge hate each other, and they end up fighting and parting ways. Shang Qinghua gives a heartfelt warning to Shen Qingqiu, saying that if he ever sees someone fall into a qi deviation, he needs to remain calm and find help, instead of rashly trying to save them. Shen Qingqiu scoffs at the idea that he would voluntarily help anyone.

Shen Qingqiu is left to contemplate the bitter consequences of their lives.

Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe fight the original Luo Binghe, sending him away. Afterwards, Luo Binghe is devastated that his technique was bad, so Shen Qingqiu offers to practice together to get better. Luo Binghe eagerly lays with Shen Qingqiu, but seriously his pillar is too big for Shen Qingqiu to take. At the end, Shen Qingqiu says it was terrible, and Luo Binghe happily offers to keep trying to get better. In the next bonus chapter, we’re in the past, with Shen Qingqiu and Liu Qingge working together to deal with some succubi. They enter Madam Meiyin’s cave and she offers to do some fortune telling.

Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe reunite. Since Luo Binghe is not welcome on Cang Qiong Mountain, Shen Qingqiu says that they can leave, and go where Luo Binghe is welcomed. He promises to never leave Luo Binghe again. Then we begin the bonus chapters, where Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu return to the demon realm together. After being separated for days, Shen Qingqiu finds an injured Luo Binghe and takes him to Qing Jing peak to heal. But this Luo Binghe turns out to be a fake Luo Binghe who takes advantage of Shen Qingqiu’s love. The real Luo Binghe arrives just in time. Shen Qingqiu realizes the Luo Binghe is fake because he doesn't have the scars that Shen Qingqiu gave him.

A small group flies up to the ridge to face off against Tianlang-jun, but to everyone’s surprise Tianlang-jun and his general Zhuzhi-lang are in terrible shape. They are defeated quickly. But when Shen Qingqiu orders Tianlang-jun to stop feeding Xin Mo with demonic qi, it’s revealed that Tianlang-jun isn’t the one responsible for the merging realms.

When Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe are exposed in the crowd, a fight breaks out, until Shen Qingqiu forces Luo Binghe to run away. Having failed the quest of improving Luo Binghe’s reputation, Shen Qingqiu is forced to lose all his satisfaction points on a punishment, and he faints.

But suddenly, Liu Qingge appears to rescue Shen Qingqiu. Liu Qingge, Shen Qingqiu, and Luo Binghe manage to get away, when Luo Binghe says that he feels ill and Shen Qingqiu decides to stop at an inn to rest. Luo Binghe claims he only has enough money for two rooms.

He uses the booby traps in the tomb to defeat the old palace master, and Qiu Haitang runs away alone after she learns some shocking new information. Shen Qingqiu hides Luo Binghe to face Tianlang-jun and Zhuzhi-lang alone, when suddenly Luo Binghe wakes up. Luo Binghe thinks that Shen Qingqiu abandoned him and is angry, but then realizes that Shen Qingqiu got injured to protect him this entire time. He cries and begs for forgiveness, while Shen Qingqiu wonders, just how did he raise such a sticky crybaby disciple?

Luo Binghe breaks into the mausoleum, but he's not strong enough to defeat his father. Shen Qingqiu uses his knowledge from the novels to get through the booby traps in the halls and escape with Luo Binghe.

Qi Rong sacrifices himself to save Guzi, and then disappears. The guoshi says that he knows where Jun Wu might have gone, and leads Xie Lian, Hua Cheng, and Mu Qing to mount tonglu. But they are stopped by a giant river of lava.

Hua Cheng appears and temporarily stops Jun Wu so that they can free the other rapped heavenly officials. Hua Cheng then brings up Xie Lian’s giant divine statue using prayer lanterns and silver butterflies so that everyone can jump onto it to escape the burning heavens. Xie Lian directs the statue to fly away, but Jun Wu turns the heavenly capital into a fiery flying fortress and chases after them. They end up in Black Water’s domain to fight.

We learn the background of JW through the guoshi. JW tried to save the kingdom of Wu Yong from a volcano eruption, but failed and caused a million people to fall to their deaths. Driven into depression, he suggests using human sacrifices to stop the volcano. His friends disagree with him, so he kills them and ends up cursed by their resentful spirits. The guoshi runs away, but later is reunited when JW becomes the emperor of the heavens. But the guoshi finds out that JW’s ascension story is a lie, and he has murdered all the previous gods in order to become the emperor, using his hatred to create vicious ghosts and monsters to terrorize the people.

But Hua Cheng has snuck in with the rain master and helps Xie Lian escape his palace. They run into the fetus spirit and Jian Lan, who unleashes her pent up anger at Feng Xin.

But suddenly they realize a stranger snuck in, and it turns out to be Xie Lian’s guoshi, Mei Nian Qing! Jun Wu appears to apprehend Mei Nian Qing back to heaven. Xie Lian kisses Hua Cheng goodbye and returns to heaven to report the situation.

Xie Lians asks Jun Wu to re-banish him and give him two cursed shackles: one to seal his spiritual powers, and the other to disperse his luck. Flash forward to book 5. White no face is fighting Xie Lian, when suddenly Xie Lian notices a giant stone statue and controls it to break out of mount Tonglu. Xie Lian calls out for Hua Cheng once he’s broken through, and Hua Cheng immediately appears, hugging him from behind.

He lays in the center of the road with a sword in his chest, seeing if anyone will help him, but no one comes. Finally on the third day, a young man trips over him and curses at him, but then later returns to help him up and gives him a bamboo hat to shield him from the rain. This one act of kindness gives Xie Lian hope, and the energy to fight back against White No Face

Angry and shamed, Xie Lian leaves the mountain and runs into the White Clothed Calamity. Instead of killing him, the white clothed calamity hugs and comforts Xie Lian. Xie Lian resists him, but loses their fight and returns home injured. Mu Qing is there and reveals to Feng Xin that Xie Lian robbed, causing Xie Lian to go crazy and chase Mu Qing out. He hides in his room until he calms down, but when he looks in a mirror, he is wearing white no face’s mask.

But when they jump inside, Xie Lian and White no face are the only ones inside the kiln. White no face’s true plan is revealed: which is to transform Xie Lian into a supreme ghost king. Cliffhanger into book 4, which is a flashback.

Back in present time, Hua Cheng and Xie Lian are still stuck inside the mountain spirit and they suddenly hear the voice of Xie Lian’s guoshi from Xian Le on the other side of the wall.

Using the shovel, the group dig themselves into the stomach of one of the 3 mountain spirits surrounding Mount Tonglu. Unfortunately, the walls of the caves are sentient, and the group gets separated, with Xie Lian and Hua Cheng together. Hua Cheng offers a red string to tie around Xie Lian’s finger so that they don’t lose each other. Through Hua Cheng’s butterfly, they see Quan Yizhen stuck halfway through the cave wall, with Yin Yu approaching him.

The ghosts suspect that there is a heavenly official spy amongst them, so they stick yellow talismans on their forehead to prove they’re not human.

He offers Shi Qingxuan a way to live, if he kills his own brother. Shi Qingxuan can’t do it. However, Shi Wudu tries to kill Shi Qingxuan in a murder-suicide, deciding that both of them dying is better than following He Xuan’s revenge. He Xuan then rips off Shi Wudu’s head. Shi Qingxuan goes crazy with anguish. The entire scene is witnessed by Xie Lian, hiding in Shi Qingxuan’s body with the soul shifting spell. But Hua Cheng pulls him out of the spell back to his own body by sucking his spiritual energy out of his mouth.

They end up at a magical lake, where Xie Lian can see a hidden building in the lake’s reflection. But just then a shadow approaches behind him.

Finally, the people of Xian Le turn their backs on Xie Lian and burn all his temples and desecrate all his statues, and Xie Lian is summoned back to heaven. But one young devoted follower vows to remember Xie Lian forever, and worship him as his one true god. That’s the end of book 2.

After an incident where a Yong'An family is brutally killed, a war breaks out. Xie Lian decides to descend from heaven in order to help the Xian Le royal army push back the Yong’An refugees. However, Xie Lian is lured into a trap and is confronted by Lang Ying, the leader of the Yong’An army, and a mysterious ghost wearing funeral robes and a laughing crying mask. A young soldier arrives to save Xie Lian, but they are trapped inside a cave when Xie Lian gets poisoned by the Land of the Tender Demon. Feng Xin and Mu Qing luckily arrive in time to save them. After a few days of rest, Xie Lian decides to go to the capital for a break, and bumps into the young soldier again. As they talk, a tall man screams running towards them.

One of the Yong’An refugees, Lang Ying, loses his son and wife from the drought and travels to Xian Le for help, only to be turned away by the royal family and humiliated by the capitol citizens. Xie Lian borrows a rain hat from the rain god, but it doesn’t create enough rain to stop the drought. Things get worse and worse as more refugees enter the city until finally the king orders all the refugees to leave and declares that the capital gates will be closed.

Xie Lian, Mu Qing, and Feng Xin descend the mountain to visit their families. While visiting Mu Qing’s home, they see Qi Rong driving wildly down the street dragging a bloody sack on the floor. Xie Lian stops him and unties the sack, finding a small bloody child inside. Xie Lian orders Feng Xin to arrest Qi Rong, but Feng Xin accidentally breaks his arm. Xie Lian takes everyone to the palace infirmary. There, the king orders Feng Xin to break his own arm to repent. Xie Lian thinks that this is unfair, but Feng Xin does it anyway. They decide to take the injured child back up the mountain with them, but he somehow causes the sealed ghosts to get unleashed. The guoshi says that the child is born under a star of misfortune. Xie Lian leaves the mountain to train on his own, and during his travels ascends to a god.

Jun Wu tells Xie Lian that he sent a spy to the ghost realm because Hua Cheng has a spy in heaven. Xie Lian decides to visit his parent’s coffins to pay his respects, but is ambushed by Qi Rong who was waiting for him and had desecrated his mother’s body. Xie Lian is anguished, beating up Qi Rong, and he raises his sword about to strike it down. We leave that cliffhanger to enter Book 2, which is set in the past. Xie Lian is 17, performing in a parade, when he saves a bandaged child that fell from a tower. Mu Qing and Feng Xin, also 17, are his personal attendant and bodyguard. Mu Qing believes that Feng Xin is accusing him of stealing a missing red pearl earring, so has run away, leaving Xie Lian and Feng Xin running after him.

Hua Cheng confronts Qi Rong and it is revealed that Qi Rong is actually Xie Lian’s cousin, and that Qi Rong and Prince An Le are the true culprits behind the gilded banquet that massacred all the Yong An royals. Lang QianQiu falls into despair after learning the truth, having been betrayed by his best friend, and lied to by his guoshi. Xie Lian is devastated because he wanted to take the blame and keep Lang QianQiu innocent and optimistic. Lang QianQiu tortures and kills Qi Rong, but it turns out it was only a clone, so Lang QianQiu vows to find and kill him. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are talking about whether or not it was better to reveal the truth, when Shi Qing Xuan and Feng Xin suddenly arrive.

Shi Qing Xuan and Xie Lian discover that Ming Yi, the Earth God, was imprisoned by Hua Cheng because Hua Cheng found out he was sent by heaven as a spy for the last 10 years. Lang QianQiu comes to rescue them and fight Hua Cheng, but Xie Lian stops the fight, and starts a small fire to cause a distraction to run away. Shi Qing Xuan uses his wind to blow them outside, but inadvertently makes the fire worse, burning Hua Cheng’s whole manor down. They return to heaven, and Lang QianQiu realizes that Xie Lian is actually the guoshi Fang Xin who murdered his entire family several hundred years ago. Xie Lian is placed in house arrest, and Mu Qing and Feng Xin come to check on him, when Hua Cheng suddenly appears and kidnaps Xie Lian away. Lang QianQiu follows after Xie Lian, and challenges him to a duel. Xie Lian accepts, but fights dirty to restrain Lang QianQiu, leaving him tied up on the floor.

Shi Qingxuan sneaks into the manor and together with Xie Lian, they snoop around the manor for clues of the missing Heavenly Official. They find a secret door that teleports them into multiple dangerous situations until they finally find the correct door that leads them down a dark staircase, where they find a mysterious man.

Xie Lian offers to win Lang QianQiu’s freedom in a game of dice. There is a lot of dice cup flirting. Xie Lian eventually wins, and the three gods leave to figure out a plan. As they’re talking they suddenly hear a desperate scream.
