…where tradition meets innovation. Together, we bring PIANO into the FUTURE.
a global hub for innovation, education, and connection in classical piano music
Hey, 🎹 enthusiasts out there! My name is Yukimi, a classical pianist and educator from NYC and executive producer of The Piano Pod. The Piano Pod🎙 is a one-of-a-kind podcast that delves deep into the fascinating world of classical music, with a specific focus on the 🎹 piano. In a biweekly format, the show explores intriguing discussions with guests breaking exciting new ground in the classical music industry. The Piano Pod aims to nurture a thriving community that embraces innovative approaches to ensure classical music’s relevance and vitality in today’s dynamic landscape.
”How can I present the beautiful tradition of classical music to the 21st-century audience in a fun, contemporary, and engaging way?”
When I started building a piano studio in the trendy neighborhood of Downtown Manhattan in 2007 while in the NYU graduate program in piano studies, I began to ponder this question. I realized the stark difference in expectations toward classical music and music education between music professionals and the general public. Then, one of the NYU music department’s professors suggested I start a podcast: the platform would allow classical musicians to address this disparity and spark conversations about audience engagement.
Finally, fast forward to 10+ years later, The Piano Pod was born in the summer of 2020. Since then, I have had the privilege of interviewing A-listers in the classical music industry: international concert pianists, composers, arrangers, digital streamers/influencers, music educators, entrepreneurs, neurodiverse specialists, and performance psychologists.
Through fascinating conversations, we have explored how classical music should continue to evolve to remain relevant to our lifestyle, society, and culture. Over the past three seasons, The Piano Pod has achieved remarkable success by reaching faithful listeners on audio platforms and viewers via YouTube.
As the show is celebrating the past season’s achievements and gearing toward the new season in the fall, my mission as the Executive Producer is crystal clear: to provide a platform for classical musicians and educators to reflect and discuss ways to keep our industry robust and meaningful in this ever-changing world and move it forward in the post-pandemic era.

I had an incredible conversation with Ophelia Gordon —concert pianist, recording artist, and one of the world’s leading interpreters of Nikolai Kapustin’s music—for Season 5, Episode 12!
Ophelia’s artistry defies categorization. She seamlessly blends the rhythmic pulse of jazz with the technical depth of classical music—a rare and extraordinary balance. Her discovery of Kapustin’s music was a pivotal moment, leading her to a composer who, like her, refused to be boxed into a single genre.

Get ready for our upcoming episode with Dr. Skidmore who is joining us again for The Piano Pod’s season finale! Many of you may remember his insightful contribution to our very first episode back in September 2020. It feels truly fitting to bring him back as we wrap up this season.
Our Executive Producer and Host, Yukimi Song, has dreamed of creating a piano podcast since her grad school days at NYU in 2008. A professor suggested the idea back then, but it wasn’t until the COVID lockdown that she finally took the plunge. The sudden lifestyle changes caused her students to struggle with performance anxiety, sparking her mission to help them.
Her journey led her to an inspiring article in Piano Magazine where Dr. Skidmore’s work was featured. Impressed by his methods and research, Yukimi reached out to him, and their enlightening conversation inspired the launch of this podcast.
She wanted to share these valuable insights with fellow pianists and music educators. And now, here we are, coming full circle.
In this episode, we cover:
And much more!

We had an inspiring conversation with 🇦🇺Tim Topham, Founder & Director of TopMusicCo, Music Educator, & Author! Our discussion revolved around his recently released book, "No Book Beginners: A Step-by-Step Framework for Creative Piano Teaching, Starting from Lesson One."
This book encapsulates his experiences as a music educator and piano instructor, drawing from extensive research spanning from Kodaly to Music Learning Theory. It serves as a valuable resource, delving into various aspects such as the inspiration behind its creation, the current landscape of music education with a particular emphasis on piano instruction, and providing a historical context to elucidate the evolution of teaching methods in the industry.
The book critiques the prevalent note-reading-centric approach in piano instruction, advocating instead for a more holistic teaching method. Additionally, it offers a practical framework for instructing beginner piano students, emphasizing an approach that doesn't rely on any specific method books for the initial 10 weeks. Check out Tim’s book, No Book Beginners HERE.
We also explored the digital empire that he built to support fellow music educators, offering a wealth of resources including blogs, vlogs, courses, and a membership community. These resources aim to empower teachers, enabling them to evolve into 21st-century educators within their respective communities.
Tim shared valuable insights on the requisites for being a 21st-century music business owner, the challenges among teachers, and the prevailing trends in piano teaching.

Welcome to the fun and inspiring conversation with Miki Sawada, the talented Pianist & CEO of Gather Hear Inc., for The Piano Pod’s Season 4 Episode 11!
Since the inception of our show, we've shone a spotlight on pianists who astonish us with their creativity. 😎 Yet, Miki's journey is truly unparalleled. Dive into the details:
Launched in 2017, inspired by the divisive atmosphere of the 2016 🇺🇸 Presidential Election, Gather Hear Tour is Miki's labor of love. Eschewing conventional venues, she embarks on tours across rural America, bringing high-quality, inclusive classical music performances to communities often overlooked.
From the spiritual landscapes of Utah to the rural stretches of Alabama, and from quaint local cafes to segregated schools and prisons, Miki's journey in her Uhaul van, with her piano in tow, is a mission to deliver the beauty of live music directly to the people. Her approach fosters genuine connections, celebrating the spirit of American life through the universal language of music.
What began as a musical odyssey has evolved into a profound journalistic endeavor. Miki documents her experiences, offering an intimate glimpse into the American heartland through candid video recordings. These stories, raw and unfiltered, weave a rich narrative of the nation's diverse tapestry, with music serving as the key to unlocking community bonds. After each tour, Miki and her team craft vlogs and produce documentary films that resonate with cinematic impact.
Check out Miki’s award-winning films on her YouTube channel, including "Gather Hear Louisiana 2022," the latest film from her tour, which premiered at the Independent Film Festival Boston in April 2023.
📺 This episode's audio is also available as a video format!
🎼 Meet Miki Sawada: Featured in The Boston Globe’s Best of Arts 2021 list, Miki is reshaping classical music through her innovative Gather Hear Tour. Traveling state-by-state, she brings her piano to community spaces, connecting with Americans through free concerts in unconventional venues across the country. Miki's diverse career includes solo and chamber music, focusing on contemporary pieces, with notable performances at Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her debut album, "A Kind of Mirror," released in 2021, is a five-movement electroacoustic work inspired by long-distance running, earning acclaim and featuring in a commercial for Tracksmith. Miki's unique approach to classical music is highlighted through her rich tapestry of performances and accolades.

For this season's final episode, I interviewed Maryam Raya, American-born international concert pianist, fashionista, Entrepreneur, and "Complete Artist of the 21st Century." I'd wanted to invite her as a guest speaker for quite some time, and finally, I had an opportunity to do so, and I am pleased to share this special episode with you! I thought it was timely and appropriate to finish this fantastic season with a guest like Maryam, who is not only an incredible artist but also an entrepreneur with degrees in music, literature, and business management. She also collaborates with professionals from the film industry. This season's theme, without much intention on my end, has been all about audience engagement. Three-plus years of the pandemic taught us the importance of our audience and forced us to think about who we are and redefine our mission as artists and music educators. So, to complete this audience engagement series, Maryam is the perfect guest to end it for her success in establishing and branding her name as a classical pianist. Don't worry! The Piano Pod will be back for Season 4 in mid-September 2023!

For this episode, I got to interview Josh Simons, the CEO & co-founder of Vampr, the world’s largest and most active social-professional network for musicians. Recognized by Fast Company as one of the Most Innovative Companies in 2022, Vampr is home to over one million users worldwide. Vampr is created for musicians and made by musicians to support musicians. Its primary mission is to help musicians of all genres create their community in its ecosystem. Vampr shares each user’s expertise as well as a social media interface with an easy swipe left/right function to connect with others. As many of us are frequent users of social media, we realize that many social network sites only offer one or two unique features to their users: Facebook, Instagram, Soundcloud, LinkedIn, Fiverr, Thumbtack, etc.; moreover, they do not interconnect to one another. So, you must be on multiple platforms constantly to create, sustain, and thrive in your career as a musician. Finally, Vampr created a solution for musicians – it combines features of all other platforms: Connect, Collaborate, Control, Learn, and Discover. On its platform, you can collaborate with like-minded musicians and find a publicist, graphic designer, videographer, or copyright expert, for example, while promoting your music by uploading your videos and music just like any other social media platform. Vampr is creating a village for all musicians! Josh is a successful artist, songwriter & producer who has toured for many years. So with his extensive experience as a professional musician, he has a lot of credit for being the groundbreaker in the industry by creating something unique and timely to help fellow musicians. So, you do not want to miss this episode to hear what Vampr offers and how its platform helps and supports fellow musicians like us![Sponsors]

For this episode, I invited and interviewed Hannah Reimann: Pioneer & Advocate of Stretto Pianos and Creator of the International Stretto Piano Festival and Stretto Piano Concerts. Ms. Reimann was featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, described as a "musician on a mission to make the world safe for small pianists."According to paskpiano.org (PASK = Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards), recent research into pianists' hand spans shows that:
Over 50% of adults have hand spans that are too small for the conventional keyboard.
About 87% of women and 24% of men have hands that are too small for the current-sized keyboard.
Children are currently forced to learn on an instrument designed for men with large hands.
Given a choice of keyboard, around 75% of adults would most likely choose a smaller size!
After all, our struggles as pianists may not be because of our shortcomings but the wrong-sized keyboard we've been practicing and performing. In this episode, Ms. Reimann will take us through the world of Stretto Pianos and introduce us to its thriving community. We will discuss topics as follows:
🎵 The definition/description of a Stretto Piano
🎵 Brief lesson on the history of pianos – how the sizes of the piano and width of the key have increased and standardized by the 1880s.
🎵 Acquiring a patent and building Stretto Pianos
🎵 Ms. Reimann's 30-year journey of promoting Stretto Pianos.

For the final episode of 2022, we interviewed Dr. Magdalena Stern-Baczewska on a Saturday afternoon and had a great time chatting with her about 🎹 and harpsichord!
Ms. Baczewska is both a concert pianist and a harpsichordist. Have you watched her double performances of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations--first by performing on the harpsichord, then on the piano in one concert back to back 🤯? If not, we urge you to watch it here: https://youtu.be/oLAQPrOGqJo!
During the interview session, we talked about Magdalena's multifaceted career as a concert pianist/harpsichordist, her collaborations with prominent composers: from an award-winning composer, Tan Dun, to a multi-genre composer/rapper, Gene Pritsker, her recordings including "Music for Dreams" collaborated with a medical team specialized in the research and treatment of sleep disorders, her vision for music education, and more!
[Magdalena Stern-Baczewska -- Innovative Keyboardist, Yamaha Artist, & Educator]
Hailed by the press as "One of the most innovative, even radical classical keyboardists in the U.S.," Ms. Baczewska enjoys a multifaceted career as a concert pianist/harpsichordist, educator, and speaker. Having made her solo debut at age 12 in her native country, Poland, she performed internationally with the world's leading orchestras, such as Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, and China National Symphony, among many others.
She has toured Europe and the U.S. with double performances of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations--first by performing on the harpsichord, then on the piano in one concert, which had not been done since Rosalyn Tureck's Carnegie Hall performance in 1977.
Ms. Baczewska is also a recording artist. Her recordings include pieces by traditional composers such as Bach, Mozart, Chopin, and Debussy, as well as contemporary composers such as the Oscar and Grammy Award-winner Tan Dun and more. In addition, she recorded an album called, Hip-Hopsichord, with an NYC-based composer and rapper, Gene Pritsker. This inventive album combines the virtuosity of harpsichord playing with electronic hip-hop/techno/r&b rhythms.
Ms. Baczewska is a professor of music and Director of the Music Performance Program at Columbia University, and she has given master classes and lectures around the world. In addition to sharing the timeless beauty of the music through her performance and recordings, her musical mission is to educate her audiences in each performance by giving them tools to enjoy music more profoundly.

[The Piano Pod 🎙- Bringing PIANO into the 21st Century] podcast show about 🎹 for ALL pianists
Hey, 🎹 lovers out there! We are The Piano Pod, a bi-monthly podcast🎙 show hosted by Yukimi Song and Clara Zhang--classical pianists & educators from NYC. Our podcast show is for anyone who plays the piano for fun, loves listening to piano music, is currently pursuing a career in piano, or works professionally in the music industry.
Twice a month, we interview a guest speaker who has been breaking exciting new ground in the music industry. Started during the coronavirus pandemic as a way to adjust to the new musical reality, the goals of The Piano Pod are to examine the traditions of the piano, adapt them, and expand its capabilities in this modern era.
We had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Rae de Lisle from New Zealand for this season's 8th episode.
Dr. Rae de Lisle is a world-class piano pedagogue who has produced many exceptional piano students of major competition winners in New Zealand and internationally throughout her outstanding teaching career.
Because of her own challenging experience at the height of her concert pianist career, Dr. de Lisle became a dedicated piano pedagogue, and researcher whose groundbreaking Ph.D. research into focal dystonia has gained international recognition and led to presentations and keynote speeches worldwide.
Her experience in teaching students from the very beginning to international competition winners, as well as her studies with renowned pedagogues Brigitte Wild (student of Claudio Arrau), Cyril Smith (student of Rachmaninoff), and Maria Curcio (student of Artur Schnabel), gives her a unique perspective on the development of injury-preventative piano technique at every level, from the beginner to the advanced pianist.
In this episode, Dr. de Lisle shares the painful experience she endured as a pianist, her research on focal dystonia, her philosophy of modern piano technique, and more. She will also share her latest publication of, “Fit 4 Piano,” exclusive for our audience!

[Dr. Rae de Lisle]
Rae's expertise as a teacher and leading researcher in focal dystonia and injury prevention in musicians is built on the foundations of her earlier career as a concert pianist. For almost twenty years, Rae was a prolific performer, playing around a hundred concerts a year, both nationally and internationally, as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician. As a result of an overuse injury that abruptly ended her performance career, her teaching became her focus. Her own search for recovery led Rae towards the research into injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Rae has since been involved in assisting of many high-profile pianists, including New Zealand’s leading concert pianist, Michael Houstoun to recover from injury. At the university, Rae is the coordinator of the Musicians' Health Programme, a collaborative program between the School of Medicine and the School of Music. As a result of Rae's research into the biomechanics of piano technique and injury prevention, Rae has devised a set of exercises suitable for students of all levels, which deal with the most basic movements involved in piano playing. In the years since these exercises were introduced to the students majoring in Piano Performance at the University of Auckland, there has been a reduction in the injuries reported. Rae has since expanded these exercises further into a multi-media publication as part of a research project, Fit 4 Piano.

This Brooklynite piano/sax duo never came across one another though they have been residing only one subway station away for years till the fateful day of Sept 2021. Liana and Thomas finally met through their mutual friend.
[TPP Team]
We had a great conversation with Kyle P. Walker: Activist Concert Pianist and Educator as our guest of Season 3 Episode 6.
Kyle, a strong advocate for social equality, believes music can speak to social issues better than verbal language. Having extensive experience both as a performing artist and journalist, he feels a strong responsibility and passion for raising awareness of social justice issues through music in an accessible and engaging way.
In this episode, you will hear Kyle’s thoughts on how music can speak towards current social issues, how he brings awareness to influential Black music through his innovative and inclusive programs, and more.
[Kyle P. Walker – Activist Concert Pianist]
A strong advocate for social equality, critically acclaimed pianist Kyle P. Walker believes music can speak to social issues better than verbal language can, the understanding of which he brings to both traditional Western repertoire and that of the living worldwide composers with whom he collaborates.
His performances have been featured on media broadcasts, including The Green Space at WNYC, WQXR’s Mcgraw-Hill Financial Young Artists Showcase, Sunday Baroque, NPR’s Public Radio East, CNN, and PBS. He has been featured in recitals at New York’s Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall and with an orchestra in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall.
Mr. Walker was featured in residency alongside the Boston-based Castle of Our Skins ensemble at The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The online series of free digital programs explores how some Black American composers have found inspiration in the rich tradition of spirituals.
Walker is a pianist of DARA + KYLE, an innovative piano/cello duo, and 2021 recipient of the Chamber Music America “Ensemble Forward” career grant. The award-winning duo is committed to bringing excellence and respect to all under-represented composers in the canon. Walker also performs with The Harlem Chamber Players, an ethnically diverse collective of professional musicians dedicated to bringing high-caliber, affordable, and accessible live classical music to people in the Harlem community and beyond.
As an advocate of social justice, Walker is a founding member and chamber musician of The Dream Unfinished, an activist orchestra that supports NYC-based civil rights and community organizations through concerts and presentations. As a teaching artist and educator, he has co-presented at the Human Rights Center, the New York Society for Ethical Culture, and the Brooklyn Public Library.
A dedicated educator, Walker is a piano faculty member at NYU Steinhardt’s program in Piano Studies. In addition, he is also on the faculty of the Lucy Moses School at Kaufman Music Center and the chamber music faculty of The Artist Program at Suzuki on the Island. He has presented recitals, residencies, and masterclasses at various institutions such as The University of Dayton, The University of Virginia, Belmont University, Allen University, The Harlem School of the Arts, and The Duke Ellington School of the Arts. He has also co-presented extensive workshops alongside The Dream Unfinished, including the Carnegie Hall Music Educator Workshop, speaking about arts activism and building diverse curriculums for students to include composers that reflect the communities they serve.

TPP Team had a wonderful conversation with Mr. Geroge Ko: Young Steinway Artist/Composer/Improviser for this episode.
George is a concert pianist pushing classical music forward by blending "Chopin-like virtuosity with the vast soundscapes of cinema." His music revolves around improvisation - a practice typically confined to jazz music - which he's brought into the realm of classical music. Many of his songs are one-take improvs, allowing maximum creativity and spontaneity.
George has appeared on stages worldwide, from 2000-seat auditoriums to Carnegie Hall. In addition, his music has been heard at film festivals, television broadcasts, and music festivals in Italy, Germany, Luxembourg, and China.
George is also a successful entrepreneur, having founded several companies and nonprofits. He received the CES Innovation Award in Robotics in 2019, the Harvard Gov 2.0 Award for innovation in politics, and a patent in data management. During the pandemic, despite his success in the tech and media sector, he realized his true calling was playing the piano, so he left his job and began focusing on playing piano professionally for the first time.
He's now a Young Steinway artist. And Steinway has described him as "making classical music accessible and exciting for the masses.”
In this episode, you will hear about George’s complicated yet fulfilling relationship with the performing arts world, his discovery of his mission – entertaining his wide-range audience with his improvisatory skills on the piano as a classical pianist, his candid views about the trajectory of the classical music industry and more.

This episode starts out a bit differently than others--you hear an excerpt of Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata Op.106 (allegro) performed by our guest.
🎹TPP team had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Halim - Steinway Artis, Sascha Gorodnitzki Music Professor of Piano Studies at New York University, and the "Last Pupil" of Vladimir Horowitz. We were so blown away by all the incredible stories and insights he shared and the name-dropping 🤯!
Mr. Halim shared such in-depth & personal stories with the legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz while Mr. Halim was studying with the maestro in the late 1980s. You might have read Mr. Horowitz's biography, Horowitz: His Life and Music, written by Harold C. Schonberg…one of the chapters of the book was titled "Last Pupil," which was about Mr. Halim!
In the chapter, the author Schonberg describes what led Mr. Halim to become the last student of the Master, what his first lesson was like with the Master, and how their student-mentor relationship became complicated. Their encounter was in the late 1980s, and this biography was written in the 1990s by someone else besides Mr. Halim himself.
So, in 2022, Mr. Halim is ready to share his genuine and authentic perspectives after 2-3 decades and intimate memories about Mr. Horowitz...even at the Master's funeral.
In this episode, you will hear a few TPP-exclusive 💣 stories about Mr. Horowitz you've never heard from anywhere else, and 👏 YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS IT!

[Season 3 Episode 2]
The Piano Pod team had the privilege of interviewing Ms. Edna Golandsky, Founder and Artistic Director of the Golandsky Institute, for the opening episode of Season 3!
During the show, we got to hear her personal stories:
✅ her youth and training
✅ her relationship/training with Mrs. Taubman
✅ how the Taubman Approach/Technique can solve most common pianists' problems
✅ how she developed The Golandsky Institute.
and more!
If you are a pianist or serious piano student, who would like to have a long, injury-free career in performing arts,
OR
If you are a piano teacher whose students deal with issues of tension while playing/practicing piano, THIS EPISODE IS JUST FOR YOU.
[Ms. Edna Golandsky]
Ms. Golandsky is a world-renowned piano pedagogue and the leading exponent of the Taubman Approach. She has earned wide acclaim throughout the United States and abroad for her pedagogical expertise and for using the Taubman piano technique. She is also known for her extraordinary ability to solve technical problems and her penetrating musical insight.
Ms. Golandsky started the piano study in Israel at the age of eight. As a gifted pianist, she played recitals at age ten and performed with orchestras by twelve. Ms. Golandsky came to the United States when she was sixteen years old and was immediately accepted to the Juilliard School in their Preparatory Division. She remained at Juilliard for the next eight years, studying with Jane Carlson, Rosina Lhevinne, and Adele Marcus and graduating with bachelor's and master's degrees in piano performance.
She has been featured in The New York Times, Classical Music UK, Authority Magazine, Piano & Keyboard Magazine, The Clavier Companion, New Work Weekly, Thrive Global, and has written for The Strad, Interlude, TopMusic, Piano Marvel, and The Cross-Eyed Pianist among others.
For more information about Edna, please visit ednagolandsky.com. You can also learn more about The Golandsky Institute by visiting golandskyinstitute.org.
[The Taubman Approach]
The Taubman Approach is a groundbreaking analysis of the mostly invisible motions that function underneath a virtuoso technique. The resulting knowledge makes it possible to help pianists overcome technical limitations and cure playing-related injuries. It is also how tone production and other components of expressive playing can be understood and taught.
Edna Golandsky is the person with whom Dorothy Taubman worked most closely. In 1976 Ms. Golandsky conceived the idea of establishing an Institute where people could come together during the summer and pursue an intensive investigation of the Taubman Approach. She encouraged Mrs. Taubman to establish the Taubman Institute, which they ran together as co-founders. Mrs. Taubman was Executive Director, and Ms. Golandsky served as Artistic Director.
Almost from the beginning, Mrs. Taubman entrusted Ms. Golandsky with the planning and programming of the annual summer session. She gave daily lectures on the Taubman Approach and later conducted master classes as well. As the face of the Taubman Approach, Ms. Golandsky discusses each of its elements in a ten-volume video series. Mrs. Taubman has written, "I consider her the leading authority on the Taubman Approach to instrumental playing.

The Piano Pod team had a wonderful conversation with the musical power couple, Juhi Bansal & Nic Gerpe, from L.A.!
📝 Juhi Bansal (composer/conductor): "Radiant and transcendent," the music of Juhi Bansal weaves together themes celebrating musical and cultural diversity, nature and the environment, and strong female role models. Her music draws upon elements from Hindustani music, the spectralists, progressive metal, musical theatre, and choral traditions to create deeply expressive sound-worlds.
As an Indian composer brought up in Hong Kong, her work draws upon both those traditions with the gestures of western classical music. Recent seasons have included commissions from the Los Angels Philharmonic Association, Beth Morrison Projects, New York Virtuoso Singers, and more. Her music is regularly performed throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia and is available on the Naxos, Albany, and Roven Records labels. She currently serves as a music faculty member at Pasadena City College.
🎹 Nic Gerpe (pianist): Hailed as magnetic by Dan Johnson from L.A. Downtown News. L.A. Times music critic Mark Swed described his playing as "wonderfully illuminating… his tone is crystalline. His technique is dazzlingly fluid." A dedicated proponent of new music, Nic has worked with composers such as Steve Reich, Gernot Wolfgang, and Anne LeBaron, and has given numerous world premieres in the Los Angeles area and abroad. Nic has performed in such venues as Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.
As one of four young pianists featured on L.A.-based Piano Spheres’ new Satellite Series, he recently performed a critically-acclaimed solo recital at the Roy And Edna Disney Cal Arts Theater. Nic is also a dedicated educator and has been on the Piano Faculty of the Pasadena Conservatory of Music since 2006.

Hi 🎹 lovers out there! We are The Piano Pod, a bi-monthly podcast🎙 show, hosted by Yukimi Song and Clara Zhang--classical pianists & educators from NYC. Our podcast show is for anyone who plays the piano for fun, loves listening to the piano music, is currently pursuing a career in piano or works professionally in the music industry, or someone curious about the world of piano music!
TPP had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Lowell Liebermann, one of America's most frequently performed and recorded composers, and a multiple-award recipient. He has written over 140 works in all genres, several of which have become standard repertoires, such as Sonata for Flute and Piano, and Gargoyles for solo piano.
Dr. Liebermann has been commissioned by many ensembles and instrumentalists, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Emerson String Quartet, and flutist Sir James Galway. Dr. Liebermann is a Steinway Artist, who has also written an extensive amount of piano solo and ensemble music. Last year, he released his debut solo-piano album, Personal Demons (https://www.steinway.com/music-and-artists/label/personal-demons-lowell-liebermann), under the Steinway & Sons label—the repertoire includes his compositions and works by Busoni, Liszt, and (Czech composer,) Kabelach.
Dr. Liebermann currently serves as a distinguished composition faculty member and the head of the composition department at Mannes School of Music, where he founded the Mannes American Composers Ensemble, devoted to performing works of living American composers.
His latest project, a solo-piano album of world premiere recordings by contemporary British composer David Hackbridge Johnson, “The Devil’s Lyre,” will be released on February 4, 2022, under the Steinway & Sons label.
