Ep - 86 How Vikings Lived

This week is another of our new old school Show and Tell Episodes. Just to remind people of the format both our hosts Mathias and Daniel each bring a few topics and proceed to do a really good deep dive discussion on them. This week's topics are: Why are Vikings so popular in South America? And what were the actual living conditions of people in the Viking Age? Also, a special guest appearance by Mathias's dog barking at a moose that trapped him in his house; it's complicated.

Please bear with our sound this week as Dan is breaking down and moving his studio and Mathias is getting over being sick. With any luck everything will be back to normal soon!

Ep - 85 What Is Spirituality Anyway? With Uffe Berenth

This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with  Uffe Berenth one of the brilliant artists behind Ginnungagap Art, a tattoo studio specialising in Nordic Tattoos, Viking Tattoos and Rune Tattoos; Uffe also has a special personal connection with the god Týr. Together with the boys he'll be discussing the spirituality behind the tattooing process, whether or not Vikings tattooed, and Daniel somehow managing to get stuck in his own grinder at work this week (he's fine, it's complicated). It's a lovely discussion and we hope to have Uffe on again soon, enjoy!

Also, Mathias is still getting over being ill, which is why his voice sounds so raspy. He should be back to normal by next week.

Ep 84 - Thor: Marvel Versus Myth, with Ben Mudge

This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Ben Mudge, Ben catapulted into the limelight in 2017 with his "Thursday Thorsday '' Instagram posts and his uncanny resemblance to the popular Marvel character played by Chris Hemsworth. As a person with Cystic Fibrosis Ben used this attention two raise awareness for the genetic disorder as well as inspire people to live more active and healthy lives; something he continues to do today as a personal trainer and nutritionist. Together with the boys Ben will be delving deep into the character of Thor and crucially the differences between his Marvel and Mythological portrayal in a new segment we're calling, "Marvel versus Myth." If any of our more musically inclined listeners wanted to take a whack at making a theme for the new segment we would be happy to shout you out on the show. Shan tried but well, it's complicated.

Ep 83 - The Viking Age Must Die

This week Mathias and Daniel are hopping in the wayback machine and doing something we haven't done in a while, that is to say doing an episode without a guest! We recently got some feedback that some people missed the laid back feel of the old shows.  So moving forward we're hoping to mix in more of these slower Show and Tell style episodes where both hosts bring a few topics and we do a really good deep dive discussion. This week's topics? Did Vikings actually have beards, and why the Viking Age doesn't actually exist... Look, it's really complicated... just don't ask.

Ep 82 - Heimdall, The Most Gangster God with Varg of Voluspa

This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Varg Saastad, the lead guitarist and master of many instruments  in the folk rock band V?luspá. We've spoken with Varg's partner  Sól Geirsdóttir, perhaps better known by her internet moniker: "The Viking Queen," back in episode 59 (which is also a great listen). Together with the boys Varg will be delving into the personal journey his music has taken him on, as well as his upcoming projects, including a song about Heimdall which features every instrument he knows how to play. That's frankly just a bonkers feat of complexity we can't hope to match!

This week  Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Helena Hals, perhaps better known by her internet moniker Viking Helena. Helena is a historian and author known for her hands-on approach to exploring Iron Age Norway. Together with the boys she'll be discussing the history of the Sámi tribes in Northern Norway, which is a subject we have not really touched on before in the show, but are really excited to get into. Will the topic be fascinating enough to finally make Dan listen to an episode of the show? Well, it's complicated.

We are headed back to the good old days this week on NMP as Mathias and Daniel sit down with Gustav Holberg and Kjell Braaten , two of the OG musicians who helped start the genre we now know as, "Viking Music." Together with the boys they'll be sharing stories of their humble beginnings at a millenium new years party, and marveling at how huge the scene has become propelled by bands like Wardruna and Heilung.  How did we get here from there? Well, it's complicated.

It's getting spooky this week as Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Rich Blackett, The chair of Asatru Uk,  to discuss all things Zombie in the saga literature . Ep 78 - All About the Picts with Pictavia Leather

This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Hamish Findlay of Pictavia Leather to discuss the history of the Picts in Scotland. Pictish history spans 900 years and has numerous historical intersections with both the Romans and the Vikings. Together with the boys Hamish will be digging into all the weird theories of how the Picts came to be and what eventually became of them; as well as trying to disabuse the harmful stereotype of the blue painted savage.  Will we get through all of that in just over an hour? Well, it's complicated...

Ep 75 - Is Thor the Real All-Father? With Terry Gunnell

This week on NMP we are so excited to have one of our dream guests!  Mathias and Daniel  are sitting down with none other than professor Terry Gunnell; in fact Dan was so excited that he read his first ever academic article in preparation (we're so proud). Terry is a well known expert in Nordic and Icelandic folklore, who has also written many of the crew at NMP's favorite books, and even taught Mathias a few times! Together with the boys Terry will be talking about the Prose Edda, specifically why the text places so much significance on Odin. Is he really the head of the pantheon, or was Thor perhaps the real All-Father all along? Well, it's complicated...

Ep 74 - The Raven Flag - It's Complicated

This week we are trying something new on NMP! Entirely on purpose (and not at all due to a scheduling snafu) Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Rune Rasmussen from the Nordic Animism Youtube channel, Jonas Lorentzen from the band Nebala, and Eco-Philosopher and co-founder of Matr Food Naina Eira. Together this distinguished group will be talking about Rune's latest project, and more specifically the Raven Flag he has created as a symbol for the contemporary bond between animism and nature. This is both our longest episode ever, and our first panel discussion, so bear with us because it's going to get complicated fast!

If you would like to see Rune's own video on the Raven Flag you can find it here.

Little known fact: Anatoly and his wife are both history students making him uniquely suited to discussing the Rus and Viking influence on one another. Also a lot of to-do will be made about what exactly we should call this genre that Nytt Land and Wardruna occupy, it turns out it's really complicated.

Mathias and Daniel are delighted to be sitting down again this week with Dr. Ruarigh Dale in what is shaping up to be an unofficial three part saga.  You might remember Ruarigh from his last appearance on the podcast where he spoke at length about The Danelaw Saga, a subject he quite literally wrote the book on. This week though he's here to talk about one thing and one thing only and that is the role of the Berserker in the saga literature and medieval Viking society. Were berserker's more akin to a kings champion? Why has the idea of a battle mad warrior so grabbed the attention of storytellers through the ages? And what is the berserker strut and why should we call it that? The complicated answers to these questions and many more on this week's episode!

If you would like to check out or help support Ruarigh's ongoing World-Tree Project you can find it at: worldtreeproject.wordpress.com

Ep 63 - Niflheim and the Return of The Seawolf

It's always fun to have returning guests! This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down for the second time with Andrew Saulf aka The Seawolf. In the world of Viking themed music Andrew has a unique angle producing more chilled out low-fi tacks which he jokingly describes as: "chill viking beats to study to." If you listen carefully you may even hear a familiar voice on one of the tracks of his new Album Niflheim!

Also There was a blizzard going on in Colorado during recording, so Mathias's audio this week is pretty bad. Thanks in advance for bearing with us.

Sofie also happens to be an expert when it comes to Skaldic Poetry and together with the boys she'll do her best to explain the complicated topic well enough that listeners can in turn flex on their friends for their weak understanding meter and rhyme structure. Ep 46 - Capitol Controversy with Brute Norse

This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Eirik Storesund, the content creator behind Brute Norse,  a blog and podcast dedicated to dispelling the many popular misconceptions about the Viking Age and Norse culture, and bridging the gap between scholarship and public perception.  Together they will be discussing the riot in the US capitol last week, and the unfortunate public misconception of certain Norse symbols and cultual elements as a result. We've covered misappropriation of Viking symbols and the unfortunate ties with white supremacy before, and quite honestly we are sad to have to do so again so early in the year. Ep 43 - Who Exactly Is Mathias Nordvig? With Guest Sean Parry

For our final episode of 2020 Daniel and special guest host Sean Parry of Sacred Knot Tattoo
will be interviewing our very own Mathias Nordvig! We figured we would go out on a fun low key note to end a year which has been severely lacking on both of those fronts.
Topics include: Mathias telling the story of Odin and Thor vs  the giant Hrungnir, discussing the origin of Thors lightning powers, and everyones favorite meads to ring in the new year.

We did have some technical issues getting Sean to join so he makes his first appearance about 15 minutes in. Skip to there if you don't want to hear juicy tid bits about Mathias's childhood in Norway (but who doesn't want to hear those?)

This week  Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Josh Rood the lead singer of the band Nexion. Together they will be answering all your questions about the celebration of Yule in the Viking era, and also discussing the practice of human and animal sacrifice in various Norse religions and texts. Those may seem like strange bedfellows for topics but trust us, it works. On a lighter note everyone shares stories of their own Yuletide traditions and mishaps; Daniel in particular has one worthy of a saga.

This week  Mathias and Daniel are thrilled to sit down with Emilie Lorentzen to speak about how she joined the band Heilung, nerd out about her background in Indo-European Languages, and her mysterious new music project.

Other topics of discussion include: The Danish island of Bornholm , where Emilie hails from, and whose folk music is the inspirations for her next project. The God Tyr, his names history and the mysterious lack of temples and religious sites dedicated to him. And how regional languages and dialects shape our thinking and who we are in the world; yes, even Daniel's.

The answers as always will be complicated.

Ep 39 - The History of the Blood Eagle with Luke John Murphy

Maybe this would have made a better Halloween episode, but this week is all about the macabre Viking ritual known as the "Blood Eagle," as made famous in the show Vikings. Luke John Murphy has been researching the historical and practical sides of the ritual and has come on the show to share his findings with Mathias and Daniel.

Surprisingly Daniel seems to have an amazing intuitive understanding of the medical science behind cracking open someone's ribcage, to the point that it would be worrying if he wasn't such a nice guy. Luke was an amazing guest so please consider heading over to his website and checking out some of his other academic papers. The one about English hair goddesses sounds particularly fun.

You can find that paper and many more at: luke-murphy.com

Also the issues with Mathias's sound are unfortunately ongoing. The problem isn't with actual equipment it's his internet connection. That's what he gets for living deep in the mountains. Anyway we are working on a solution and appreciate your patience.

Ep 38 - Assassins Creed Valhalla; Making The Music with Einar Selvik

This weeks guest needs no introduction. It's Einar Selvik the front man of the amazing Wardruna! He's fresh off of working on the music for the upcoming Assassins Creed Valhalla and was kind enough to sit down with Mathias and Daniel to discuss the experience, as well as Wardrunas upcoming album.

But that's just the jumping off point. From there the discussion will range into general artistic attitudes and the creative process, his surprise voice over cameo in Assassins Creed, and the positives and negatives of Ubisofts interpretation of the Viking material. The answers will be as complicated as they are entertaining.

Also, we have to apologize again for the audio quality Einar had some building going on in the background and we did our best but it is a problem. Frankly we were just excited to have him.

Ep 37 - The Oath: A Heathen Poets Journey with Jason Ralls

This week Mathias and Daniel are sitting down with Jason Ralls to talk about his heathen spiritual practice and recent book of poetry The Oath: A Heathen Poets Journey. The Oath chronicles the transpositional  journey of the poet as he travels through the planes, meeting with gods, and even going through the underworld.

But of course that isn't all we'll be discussing this week. Other topics also include: magic mushrooms and other hallucinogens' and their effect on spiritual practice, the Ättestupa or did grandpa really have to jump off a cliff for the good of the village, and in impromptu positive review of the movie Midsommar. How did we get all of that into one episode? Well, it's complicated.

Also we know the audio on this weeks episode is a little spotty. Unfortunately some of our files didn't upload properly so we had to get ones from our backup which just isn't as good. We are looking into a long term fix but in the meantime please bear with us.

If you would like to check out the book you can find it here: linktr.ee/JasonRalls
