Black Aristocrats of 18th Century England & France

Popular historic dramas like Bridgerton, Hamilton and Sanditon sometimes receive criticism that their diverse casts are historically inaccurate. But in fact there have been people of color in Britain and France since Roman times. By the 18th century the trans Atlantic slave trade brought more people of African decent to Europe then ever before. In 1768 there were about 15,000 black people living in London. Many were brought their as enslaved servants and sailors. But some had the right mixture of talent and luck to rise to the upper echelons of society, becoming celebrities and even aristocrats. Today we?ll met 7 prominent people of African and mixed heritage who lived in Britain or France in the 18th Century. Among them a King?s secret daughter, an icon of both Sport and music, two authors who spoke out against slavery, and a lady of wealth and refinement who would have fit perfectly into the world of Bridgerton. Here are their stories... Monarchs with the Most Monogamous Marriages

In many countries where polygamy is practiced, Kings and emperors have had harems of hundred or even thousands of wives and concubines. It?s good to be the King. But in Europe, Christianity has reigned for a millennia and the church is pretty sticked on their one woman at a time policy. But that didn?t stop a handful of monarchs from taking multiple trips down the aisle. Royal brides were under a lot of pressure to produce as many heirs as possible, and they died often in childbirth or because their bodies were warn out from constant pregnancy. If a monarch wasn?t getting the heirs he wanted from his wife, or if he had grown tired of her and she hadn?t done him the courtesy of dying, there was always divorce or even murder to clear the throne for another consort to take her place. Many rulers managed to marry 3 times, but today we?ll be counting down 6 serial monogamist monarchs who had 4 or marriages. Philip II, King of Spain, 1527 ? 1598, 4 wives William the Silent, Prince of Orange & Ruler of The Netherlands, 1533 ? 1584, 4 wives Ferdinand VII, King of Spain, 1784 ? 1833, 4 wives W?adys?aw II Jagie??o, King of Poland & Grand Duke of Lithuania 4 wives Henry VIII, King of England, 1491 ? 1547, 6 wives Ivan the Terrible, Tsar of Russia, 1530 ? 1584, 6-8 wives Honorable Mentions: Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor, 4 wives, 5 Concubines Casimir III the Great, King of Poland, 4 wives Catherine Parr, Queen of England, 4 Husbands Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Queen Victoria's Christmas Feast

In addition to being the Queen of the United Kingdom and the vast British Empire, Victoria might also be lauded as the Queen of Christmas. She and her beloved husband Prince Albert popularized many of the quintessential holiday traditions that we still enjoy today including the Christmas tree, Christmas cards and Christmas Crackers. Their 9 children enjoyed trees decorated with delectable dainties like sugar plums, candy canes and gingerbread. And many new delicious dishes were added to the traditional medieval fare on the royal holiday dining table including roast Turkey, chestnuts and plum pudding. Let?s take a look at the history of how these holiday foods made it on to her majesty?s table and enjoy a fabulously festive feast, fit for a Queen. Royal Nazis

Private family footage from 1933 was leaked to the press which shows a 6 year old future Queen Elizabeth II, with her mother, younger sister and uncle laughing and giving Nazi salutes to the camera. A rebellious 20 year old Prince Harry got in hot water for wearing a Nazi uniform to a party he attended with his brother. The British royals would very much like to forget their many family connections to Germany in the early 20th century and to Adolph Hitler himself. But the fact remains that the connections are numerous and fascinating. Let?s take a look at the British royal who started WWI resulting in the rise of Nazism, the many British and German royals who supported Hitler in the hopes of regaining their lost thrones, and a few who stood up to the Fuhrer, even to the point of being sent to concentration camps or murdered by the Gestapo. Empress Josephine Bonaparte of France

Josephine went from the daughter of a Caribbean plantation owner to the wife of a prominent French aristocrat. After her husband was guillotined during the revolution, she caught the eye of an up and coming soldier named Napoleon. Dollar Princesses

In the late 1800s, American industrialists were raking in cash and living like princes, but they had no way, other than their mansions, servants and yachts, of making it clear that they were better than everyone else. Meanwhile, across the pond, the British aristocracy had come on hard times. They still had their titles, historic estates and aire of superiority, but they were running low on funds. This became a match made somewhere south of heaven when hundreds of American heiresses married cash-strapped British noblemen. Millions of dowry dollars crossed the pond to renovate ancient English mansions and bolster the ailing peerage, while American fathers got to brag that they had a baroness or a duchess in the family. There was even a magazine, ?The Titled American? in which British nobles with a title to sell could advertise their eligibility to rich American ladies. But marriages based on exchanging cash for coronets weren?t always destined to be happy. Let?s get to know five of the American women who became Dollar Princesses... Ghastly Tales of Tudor Ghosts

The Tudors ruled over England from the unlikely battlefield victory of King Henry VII in 1485; through the 6 wives of heinous Henry VIII and his three children?s desperate fights over the throne; to the agonizing death of the magnificent Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. The family?s tragic interpersonal drama, and penchant for beheading anyone who got in their way have inspired a number of chilling ghost stories. 3 Queens of The Netherlands: Wilhelmina, Juliana & Beatrix

Male-preference primogeniture and salic law have meant that most European monarchs have been men. Queen regnants are exceedingly rare in history. But for 90 years from 1890 to 1980 The Netherlands was reigned over by three successive Queens. Wilhelmina inherited the throne after the early deaths of all three of her brothers, Juliana because she was an only child and Beatrix because she was the eldest of 4 sisters. Queen Guinevere & The Women of Arthurian Legend

Queen Guinevere, Morgan le Fey and Nimue, the mystical lady of the lake have been cast as heroins, virtuous women and wicked femme fatals by the many people who have retold the legend of King Arthur over 1500 years. I'll sketch the highlights of the story, galloping past the oft retold battles and quests of the knights of the round table and focusing on the many parts women had to play. Then take a look at the way the legend morphed through the passage of time and some of the reverberation the inhabitants of the Camelot have had on real history. Queens Who Had The Most Children

If you think the kids in your family are a lot to handle, imagine having over a dozen of them! That was the reality for the royal women in today?s video. The primary expectation of Queens and other well born women of the past was to have as many children as possible to secure their husband?s dynasty and bare a few spares to be used in advantageous political marriages. Their fertility was their life. They were married early and caught on a treadmill of pregnancy, birth, handing their babies over to be raised by wet-nurses and tutors, and hoping back into bed to conceive again as soon as possible. Surely they looked forward to the relief of menopause. Here are 9 Queens and Empresses who bore an extraordinary number of children: Mumtaz Mahal, Mughal Empress Consort - 14 Children Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen Consort of Great Britain & Ireland - 15 Children Anna Jagellonica, Queen Consort of Germany, Bohemia & Hungary - 15 Children Eleanor of Castile, Queen Consort of England - 16 Children Keran, Queen Consort of Armenia - 16 Children Maria Theresa, Holy Roman Empress - 16 Children Maria Carolina of Austria, Queen Consort of Naples and Sicily - 17 Children Anne, Queen of Great Britain - 18 Children Darejan Dadiani, Queen Consort of Georgia - 23 Children Maria Theresa's Daughters: https://youtu.be/vlLI1bp6BeA https://youtu.be/mtvFd_ciI5Y Maria Theresa's Sons: https://youtu.be/S1lp9qMACfo Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! The 6 to 8 Wives of Ivan the Terrible

What 16th century megalomaniac monarch magnified the power of his nation, ordered the violent executions of thousands of his own people, became obsessed with fathering male heirs and went through at least 6 wives, several of whom were murdered? Why Ivan the Terrible, Tsar of Russia of course! In fact he outdid Henry VIII of England in many terrible ways, including having not 6 wives but as many as 8. The exact number is still debated by historians. But 6 or 8, they would all come to regret their wedding vows. Let?s meet the women who were unfortunate enough to call one of the most evil men in history their husband. 2 Slavic Queens: Olga of Kyiv (Ukraine) & Jadwiga of Poland

Olga was the wive of Igor, the Grand Prince of the Kievan Rus?, a federation of people whose capital was the city of Kyiv, now the capital of modern day Ukraine. When her husband was brutally murdered by a subsidiary tribe, Olga went on a legendary campaign of cunning and ruthless revenge. Once in control of her husband?s kingdom, she was an efficient and effective leader. She converted to Christianity in order to get out of an unwanted marriage proposal. She is credited with introducing Christianity to the Rus people. After her death, Olga was canonized as a saint and is regarded as ?Equal to the Apostles? within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Jadwiga, Female King of Poland was crowned at the age of 10. She grew wise beyond her years and was forced to make a difficult decision about who to marry ? a young man she liked or an old man who would Christianize his country for her. Though she reigned for only 15 years she did a great deal of good and is considered one of the greatest monarchs in Polish history. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! LGBTQ Queens, Princesses & Duchesses

Happy Pride! ???? Through most of history homosexuality and gender non-conformity were met with misunderstanding and intolerance. And while men in power had some modicum of freedom to pursue their own desires, women?s sexuality and identity was much more tightly controlled. Lesbian relationships were conducted in secret or explained as ?intense friendships?. And women who didn?t conform to traditional gender politics were puzzled over and vilified. Here are the stories of 8 royal and noble women from history whose sexuality and/or identity went against the grain: Crown Princess Sun-bin Bong of Joseon Duchess Margaret of Parma Queen Christina of Sweden Duchess Hortense Mancini Queen Anne of Great Britain Princess Isabella of Bourbon-Parma Duchess Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo Princess Abigail Kaw?nanakoa of Hawaii Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History!
