The Scream Team

We're halfway to Halloween, Mom Can't Cook fans, so what better way to celebrate than with a spooky DCOM! This week it's 2002's The Scream Team, which is, confusingly, about a group of ghosts called The Soul Patrol.

It's also about Ian and Claire, two kids whose grandfather passes away, but unfortunately gets his soul crushed in the fist of an evil dead inventor called Zachariah Kull. And also about an insulting Halloween festival that Zachariah Kull is annoyed about? But also mostly about natural gas! And the Soul Patrol are there, occasionally! Good times.

Miracle in Lane 2

Miracle in Lane 2 tells the inspirational story of Justin Yoder, the first person with a disability to compete in the All American Soapbox Derby, and also presumably the first person to sit in a Disney screening room watching a movie about his life that inexplicably features loads of scenes of his parents going to town on each other.

Frankie Muniz plays Justin, a plucky kid searching for a sport in which he can compete at the same level as his athletic brother Seth (So Weird's Patrick Levis). When he discovers soap box derby racing, it seems like Justin has found his calling, but will the set in their ways derby association allow him to compete with his modified car? Will crusty local misanthrope Old Man Vic share his wealth of soapbox knowledge with this wannabe racer? Is the driver essentially ballast? Listen and find out!

Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board

The iconic good-vibes surfin', boardin' legend from Johnny Tsunami (1999) makes a glorious return to the Disney Channel in 'Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board' (2007)!

Johnny returns to O?ahu, Hawaii for his grandfather's wedding, but finds the island paradise under the cruel yoke of a gang of mountainboarding teens! Can Johnny save his increasingly large family from the poisonous influence of these bad dudes and their strikingly terrible extreme sport? Why won't his tiny uncle stop slipping through the fabric of reality? And is Johnny Tsunami a business genius, or is he just really high? The Jennie Project

Apes. What are they all about? Can we trust them? Are they going to go ballistic and destroy our houses? If only there were some way we could ask them.

Well friends, there is: sign language, the communication method that can be learned by apes. Unfortunately the ape in this movie, Jennie, isn't really interested in learning sign language, and is more interested in ape carnage and killing the mailman. Will Jennie be able to adjust to living with a human family? How quickly is she going to destroy all of their relationships? And can an ape go to prison? Going to the Mat

Jace Newfield is a New Yorker through and through. He loves jazz music, playing baseball in Central Park and, of course, the great taste of an egg cream. He's also a person who is blind, although in a place like the Big Apple, he lives a normal life with his friends.

But when his family uproots and moves Jace to Utah, he finds himself struggling with his new surroundings. The school won't get a beeping backboard to allow him to play basketball, his music teacher hates him, and his classmates don't seem to appreciate him walking around loudly talking about how great New York is, and how everyone in Utah is a toothless hillbilly who wouldn't know culture if it spit in their egg cream. Can joining the wrestling team give Jace a new sense of purpose and belonging? Why is this movie about wrestling and not jazz music? What the hell is an egg cream? Can of Worms

We all feel like we don't belong on this planet now and then, but very few of us choose to construct an intergalactic satellite communications dish in our backyard to beg aliens to come and pick us up, and even fewer of us have those calls answered by a talking dog with a necklace made of lips.

Not so Mike Pillsbury, an awkward computer genius who decides to depart planet Earth when some bullies set fire to his skeleton roundabout (it's a long story). Mike soon gets more than he bargained for however, when the worst scum of the universe make a beeline for his front door, looking to exploit the hitherto undiscovered human race. Will Mike make good on his promise to leave Earth? And why do all these aliens all have human teeth? Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior

Welcome back, podcast fans, to Mom Can't Cook! This week we're recapping 2006's Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, a film that attempts to be a martial arts movie, a high school drama, a wacky fish out of water comedy and a thoughtful examination of the pressures affecting first and second generation immigrants. Does it succeed? Kind of!

DCOM royalty Brenda Song plays Wendy Wu, a feisty teen whose only goal in life is to be crowned homecoming queen at the prom, a plan that is thrown into jeopardy when a Shaolin monk turns up to inform her that she is the reincarnation of a legendary warrior who must defeat an ancient evil named Yan Lo. The Ultimate Christmas Present

It's the holiday season folks, so this week we're cracking into a seasonal DCOM: the impossibly festive sounding The Ultimate Christmas Present (2000).

The movie tells the story of Allie and Sam, two teenage girls who steal Santa's weather machine, which you'll notice, isn't a thing Santa is known for having. If he were known for having a weather machine, said machine probably wouldn't have an earthquake button either, but while we're here imagining things, we may as imagine a better movie.

Right on Track

Continuing the grand DCOM tradition of trying to get you to care about niche sports, this week's episode is about Right on Track (2003), which takes us deep into the highly competitive world of *checks notes* junior drag racing.

Here we meet Erica Enders and her sister Courtney, junior dragster prodigies who struggle to be taken seriously because of a) the sexist attitudes of those in charge of this male dominated sport, and b) the fact that the sport itself is driving really fast in a straight line for eight seconds. Will they be able to overcome these obstacles and win the big race? Listen and find out!

Tower of Terror

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is a Disney ride in which you get in an elevator that flings you up and down for about a minute. As you can probably tell from that description, it's rich with narrative potential, which is why we have 1997's Tower of Terror movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, the movie we're talking about today.

Guttenberg plays the improbably named Buzzy Crocker, a fraudulent journalist who is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: head to the derelict Hollywood Tower Hotel to solve the mysterious disappearance of five people from the elevator on Halloween night, 1939. Will Buzzy be able to get to the bottom of what happened? Is the hotel haunted? And will his sister finally relent and let him take photos of his niece in an abandoned building? Listen and find out!

This episode was recorded live at the Prince Charles Cinema, London on October 29th, 2023.

Don't Look Under the Bed

If you didn't watch 1999's Don't Look Under the Bed when it first came out, then let us introduce you to that rarest of things: a good DCOM! If you did watch it when it first came out then you won't need reminding, as this film is absolutely terrifying and you've doubtless seen it every time you close your eyes for the last 24 years.

The film tells the story of Frances Bacon McCausland, a gifted teen who starts to be blamed for mysterious, mischievous happenings all over town. At first she suspects the improbably named Larry Houdini, a strange boy that only she can see, but it soon becomes clear that darker, more Boogeyman-related forces are at work, and Frances must team up with Larry to save her brother, and the town itself. Also, did I mention it's terrifying? Because it is.

That's right, it's Alley Cats Strike, a film about an unpleasant group of 1950s obsessed, bowling-loving outcasts who are suddenly thrust into the limelight when they find themselves as the town's last hope to win a prestigious, apple-themed sporting tournament. Can they act non 1950s long enough to carry the town to glory? Will a normal person be able to join their ranks and not lose his temper and punch all of them? How many failed apple harvests will it take for this town to go full Wicker Man? The answers to these questions and more, await!

If you've watched Alley Cats Strike and have your own thoughts, email them to us at [email protected] for a chance to have them read out on the show.

Stuck in the Suburbs

What if a huge pop star accidentally swapped phones with a teenage fan? Seems like the sort of thing his PA would fix in about 15 minutes, right? Well not in Stuck in the Suburbs (2004), because you wouldn't believe how long it takes to sort out or how many low speed bicycle chases are involved.

The phone in question belongs to pop sensation Jordan Cahill, and ends up in the possession of Brittany Aarons, a Jordan superfan and aspiring musician who is thrilled to have a connection to her favourite singer. But after her and her friend Natasha invade his privacy, blackmail him, and extort him in a legally actionable way, they start to realise that Jordan may have a deeper side that his record company is keeping under wraps.

Jumping Ship

Buckle up, DCOM fans, because this week we present a crossover event easily as momentous as Avengers Endgame: all three Lawrence brothers in a single movie!

That movie is Jumping Ship, a canonical sequel to Horse Sense, which you'll remember was a story about a spoiled rich kid learning about honest down home folks who keep it real by owning horses and operating enormous ranches. What might surprise you is that this film contains almost no horses, and is instead a story about ancient temples and bloodthirsty pirates in Australia. Why? Your guess is as good as ours!

Stepsister From Planet Weird

It can be challenging when parents decide to remarry, and if your Dad is a sentient bubble of pink gas in political exile (?!) from the planet Zircalon, well it probably doesn't help matters.

Welcome to Stepsister From Planet Weird (2000), in which Andy and Luke find themselves at the base of podcasting Everest -- tasked with recapping what is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the most bizarre DCOM they've faced to date. Expect unhinged aliens, extreme sports and a narrative structure that would make Kurosawa's head spin.

First Kid

Guarding the life of the US President's son might not sound like a premise rife with comic potential, but the makers of First Kid (1996) didn't let that hold them back.

In this Walt Disney Pictures movie that is DCOM-adjacent, Agent Sam Simms (played by comedian Sinbad) is tasked with protecting rebellious teen and heir to the Presidential throne Luke Davenport (Brock Pierce). If Simms can keep him off the Snake Internet, that is. Listen now for Andy and Luke's recap of First Kid, plus 90s VR, clip art and much more.

Cow Belles

Did you ever watch the Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie reality show The Simple Life? The makers of this week's DCOM Cow Belles certainly did!

The movie tells the story of Taylor and Courtney Callum, two spoiled, rich sisters whose thoughtless attitudes and profligate spending earn them a punishment shift working in their father's inexplicably lucrative dairy. But when embezzlement leaves the business in dire financial straits, and with their father in Ecuador for some reason, can the Callum girls step up, take responsibility and get the audience to care about the financial aspects of yoghurt production?

Hounded

What a treat we have in store this week, DCOM fans, because we're talking about Hounded, the Disney Channel Original Movie with the most violent dog attacks per minute of screen time. It's not even close.

The movie tells the story of Jay Martin, a bright student who is trying to win a scholarship to a prestigious school. However, through a series of wacky mishaps, Jay accidentally ends up kidnapping his principal's tiny, violent, bloodthirsty dog instead, and now you can forget about all that prestigious school plot because the rest of the film is just him being repeatedly owned by this horrible hound in a series of scenes that are as inventive in their action cinematography as they are genuinely harrowing to watch.

You Wish!

A magic coin that grants one wish passes into your possession. Would you wish for world peace? Life-changing wealth? How about deleting your annoying kid brother from existence?

That's the questionable wish made by big bro Alex (A.J. Trauth) in this episode's DCOM, You Wish! (2003) But don't worry, his wish doesn't erase kid brother Stevie (Spencer Breslin) entirely, it just turns Stevie into a TV megastar, for some reason. Listen to Luke and Andy try and grapple with this most bizarre of DCOMs, that also features an establishment called Larry's Rockin' Coin World, a huge amount of downtown Auckland and a surprising amount of Vanessa Carlton.

A Ring of Endless Light

Do you like dolphins? Do you like extremely predictable romantic drama? Do you like heavy handed religious metaphors? If any of these things sound like your idea of a good time then you're either Luke Westaway, or someone else who is going to enjoy the film we're talking about this week, A Ring of Endless Light.

The movie tells the story of Vicky Austin, an aspiring poet who spends the summer on Seven Bay Island, an island on the Atlantic coast of the US that is just lousy with dolphins, evil fishermen, and hot boys to become entangled in love triangles with. Will Vicky be able to choose between earnest but kind dolphin researcher Adam Eddington and torrid bad boy Zachary Gray? Can she truly communicate with dolphins telepathically? And just why did dolphins make the conscious decision to give up their hands? The answers to some of these questions await!

Quints

Imagine being an only child when suddenly, your parents have quints, and your previously peaceful home life is shattered by five wild and wacky babies! That certainly sounds like a premise rich in comic potential, doesn't it?

Well too bad, this is a DCOM, so instead we get Quints (2000), a movie that barely features the quints of the title, but instead focuses on their older sister Jamie Grover (Kimberly J. Brown), who is neither wacky, nor a baby. How will Jamie cope with no longer being the centre of her parents' world? Is getting into George Washington Science Magnet School truly where her heart lies? Can we actually see the quints, though, please? The answers to these questions, and more, await!

The Luck of the Irish

It's not clear at which point Kyle Johnson, protagonist of The Luck of the Irish (2001), is killed and the rest of the film is just the product of his neurons firing one last time, but it must be pretty early on because this is probably the most unhinged DCOM Andy and Luke have tackled so far.

The movie tells the age-old story of a basketball-loving boy who discovers he hails from a family of leprechauns and - uh oh - begins transforming into a leprechaun when his lucky coin is stolen. Andy and Luke grapple hopelessly with the most baffling DCOM plot yet, but not as hopelessly as this movie grapples with accents, or weighty themes such as heritage and the immigrant experience.

You probably felt pretty smart the day you sent your clone to school in your place, leaving you free to play Dreamcast and eat microwave popcorn at home all day. But oh no! The clone is effortlessly better than you in every way.

That's the nightmare scenario facing Will Browning (Andrew Lawrence) in this week's DCOM, The Other Me (2000). Andy and Luke discuss the film, as well as the best ways to remain un-strangled by your clone, and the folly of disguising your groundbreaking scientific endeavours as a brine shrimp export company. Listen for all this, plus: Are yo-yos cool, the NSYNC WhatsApp group and the introduction of our hot new IP, Ramp Warriors.

Genius

Happy Monday, podcast fans! We're back and trying to answer one of the most contemplated questions of modern times: can a genius ever be cool?

Charlie Boyle, the physics prodigy protagonist of 1999 DCOM Genius certainly gives it a good go, by adopting the bad boy persona of Chaz Anthony so that he can be the big man on campus at a local high school, while simultaneously trying to discover the graviton particle at the nearby university. But how long can Charlie keep this ruse afloat? Could he use his groundbreaking discoveries to fix ice hockey games? And shouldn't everyone be wearing a lot more radiation shielding? The Thirteenth Year

Imagine turning thirteen and, along with the rest of the trials and tribulations of growing up, you also have to deal with turning into a fish.

This week, Andy and Luke are talking about The Thirteenth Year, a coming of age story in which young swim team star Cody Griffin discovers that his real mother is a mermaid, and that he's turning into a fishboy with such telltale fish characteristics as flippers, the power to stick to walls(?) and the ability to shoot electricity out of his mouth(??). Will Cody come to terms with his new body? Will he still enter the state swimming championships despite having an obvious, unfair advantage? And what the hell is going on with that song over the end credits? Let's find out!
