Decibel Geek Podcast

A rock & metal music discussion show that takes an in-depth view on such earth-shattering topics as the level of sphincter pain generated by Nickelback's discography and debating what lives under Bret Michaels wig. We also occasionally interview some music-y folks you may have heard of. Yes, we really did just end that sentence with a preposition. That's how rock and roll we are.

Conversation with a KISS Meme - Ep373

We return this week with one of the most "inside" KISS-related shows we've ever done as we have a Conversation with a KISS Meme. To explain, in 2010 teenager Rich Cser was basking in the discovery of rock and metal music. For fun, he filmed himself singing and doing air guitar to some of his favorite songs and uploaded the videos to Youtube. Of these videos, his choice of KISS' Ready My Body from 1989's 'Hot in the Shade' album was a strange one. Furthermore, his animated air guitar performance, complete with tongue wagging and throwing "the horns" got the attention of the KISS Army. Soon, the video would be the topic of much discussion on many KISS groups and message boards. Not all of the response was positive. Ultimately, it was a conversation starter regardless of good or bad reaction.

KISS Meme

After 2010, the video of Cser asking if the letters are big enough kind of fell by the wayside; until this year. Popular Youtube host Ralph Viera (aka Dr. Fukk) resurrected the video on his channel for a bit of playful satire, explaining that his girlfriend had left him for Cser before throwing to the original video.

Not one to stand idly by, Decibel Geek host Aaron Camaro got to work and actually found Rich Cser on social media. Once explaining to him that his video had gotten quite a reaction, he surprisingly agreed to appear on Decibel Geek. Today we give you Conversation with a KISS Meme. Thanks to Rich Cser for the cool talk and to Ralph Viera for reminding us of the badassery that is the Ready My Body video.

WARNING, please have your girlfriends or wives leave the room before playing this episode. Unless you want them to leave you.

The Heavier Side of the Black Crowes - Ep371

We return this week for a peach of a discussion about The Heavier Side of the Black Crowes! We've never really delved deeply into this Georgia-born group led by the brothers Robinson. For this episode we turn to an expert as David Hudson from the State of Amorica podcast joins in to school us on Crowes history. Additionally, your hosts and guest spin some of their favorite 'heavier' songs by the band.

New Noize 5 - Ep369

With the ROCKNPOD Expo around the corner, we're back this week to kick back and talk about some current rock and metal happenings with New Noize 5!

There's some strange doings in the world of Rock and Metal and we're tackling a few of them this week. In this relaxed discussion we share our thoughts on a guy butt-smuggling a cell phone in jail, the untimely passing of a Sunset Strip legend, an iconic Heavy Metal guitarist that's beating the odds while churning out killer riffs, a reunion that probably never-will-be, and a concert ticketing scandal that'll have you yelling, "Kill Em All!"

KISS Lyrics Best and Worst - Ep358

We return this week with an in-depth discussion on the written word of the Hottest Band in the Land as we discuss KISS Lyrics. While they will never be viewed by the elite on a par with wordsmiths such as Dylan or Springsteen, there's plenty to talk about when it comes to the lyrical catalog of KISS.

KISS Lyrics

With so many lyrics to possibly go through, we're making this volume 1 and capping the discussion at 1977. We hope you enjoy KISS Lyrics Best and Worst and SHARE with a friend!

KIX Midnite Dynamite Albums Unleashed with Brian Forsythe - Ep366

KIX guitarist Brian "Damage" Forsythe joins us this week to break down the making of KIX's Midnite Dynamite album! Released in 1985, this album sees the band going in a heavier direction while also embracing pop elements and production of the day via producer Beau Hill.

In this long form discussion Brian shares his memories of the status of the band at the time. After putting out two major label releases, the average music fan would think the band was riding high; in this episode you'll release it was much more of a struggle. Brian's openness in this conversation is both informative and refreshing.

Midnite Dynamite

Midnite Dynamite spans 10 tracks. In this episode, Brian recalls his memories of the recording of these songs including details on gear that was used as well as some uncomfortable moments that led to this album's creation.

We appreciate Brian "Damage" Forsythe for joining us for this in-depth conversation about the making of a KIX classic!

Meet Brian at the upcoming Nashville Rocknpod Expo taking place Saturday August 10th at Nashville Airport Marriott. Get your tickets at www.nashvillerocknpodexpo.com/ticketing

Alice Cooper Blackout Era - Ep365

We dive deep into a murky period for one of rock's great as we discuss the Alice Cooper Blackout Era! The substance abuse was at its absolute peak in the early 80's for our favorite shock-rocker. Many years of drinking followed by a craving for cocaine had started to destroy Alice from the inside out. Starting in 1980 with the Flush the Fashion era, Alice Cooper abandoned his classic eye makeup for a psychotic Mommie-Dearest image. Combined with his gaunt frame, it still registers as once of his most frightening looks.

Aside from the substances, the early 80's were a strangely creative time for Alice. The albums produced during this period yielded some brilliant, yet uneven, moments. Starting with 1980's Flush the Fashion, Alice takes a swing at disco and new wave with certain tracks. 1981's Special Forces is filled with an authoritarian concept while still providing a wink and a nod to androgyny. The cocaine abuse hits mass effect on 1982's Zipper Catches Skin and the songs bear that out despite some great moments. 1983's DaDa rounds out the Blackout Era in grand fashion with an album made purely from the heart. With Warner Brothers all but guaranteeing no promotional push, Cooper reunites with Dick Wagner and producer Bob Ezrin for an album that still sounds otherworldly today.

In this episode we share our thoughts on this 4 album run and spin our favorite tracks from each. We hope you enjoy Alice Cooper Blackout Era - Ep365 and SHARE with a friend!

New Noize 4 - Ep363

We're back to talk your ear off about all the doings in the world of Rock n Roll with New Noize 4! We begin this week's festivities with an extended discussion on Vinnie Vincent. This not only involves yet another promised event for fans of the ankh warrior but in how it related to the upcoming Nashville ROCKNPOD Expo. In this diatribe that we were sent, it includes an asinine claim by the former KISS guitarist about our expo. We take the time to read this statement and give our response as well as the truth behind the situation since you aren't getting it from him.

New Noize 4

As with all New Noize episodes, we touch on our thoughts on current rock news of the day. This week we're covering the possibility of a new Tool album, new material from Guns n' Roses, Tommy Thayer throwing shade at Ace Frehley, and Courtney Love making news for anything but her music. All that and much more in New Noize 4!

Top 5 Ozzy Osbourne Songs 1980-1986 Ep360

This week we focus on the Prince of Darkness as we celebrate our Top 5 Ozzy Osbourne Songs 1980-1986! One year after being fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, Ozzy came back with a vengeance with Blizzard of Ozz. The combination of Osbourne's lyrics and the guitar gymnastics of Randy Rhodes took the rock world by storm. Additionally, bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake rounded out an incredible sonic assault that would rattle the early 80's.

Top 5 Ozzy

Not only known for great songs, Ozzy's reputation grew by leaps and bounds in the 1980's. The "Satanic Panic" movement was in full swing and Ozzy was at the top of the list. His crazed antics freaked parents out and, in turn, spawned even crazier rumors about the former Sabbath front man. We touch on our memories of Ozzy during this time as well as our first experiences buying his music.

Following Blizzard Ozzy releases three other great albums during this period. Diary of a Madman continued the momentum before tragedy struck with the untimely death of Rhodes in a plane crash. Enlisting former Mickey Ratt guitarist Jake E. Lee, Osbourne soldiered on with stellar material on Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin.

What are YOUR Top 5 Ozzy Songs from this era? Let us know in the comments and SHARE with a friend!

Top 5 Ramones Songs 1976-1980

This week we celebrate one of America's greatest bands as we pick our Top 5 Ramones Songs 1976-1980! Born in Queens, NY, Ramones were a powder keg of chemistry as Johnny, Dee Dee, Joey, and Tommy (and later, Marky) lit a match that ignited an entire movement. The simple, edgy arrangements of throwback pop put through a buzzsaw turned up to 11 inspired an entire generation to start their own bands and, in turn, kick off the punk rock wave that would take the world by storm.

As you'll hear in the episode, Aaron and Chris' favorite tracks vary wildly. We hope you enjoy Top 5 Ramones Songs 1976-1980 and SHARE with a friend!

THIN LIZZY Discussion - Ep352

We give a little Irish to you this week with our Thin Lizzy Discussion! Greg Troyan of the band Lipstick and podcast The Lipstick Panel joins us to cover the Thin Lizzy discography. Join us as we take you through each album, giving detailed stories about the production and songwriting. Additionally, we provide our thoughts on each album, picking our favorite songs.

The Thin Lizzy history starts in 1971. Distributed by Decca Records and featuring the trio of Phil Lynott, Eric Bell, and Brian Downey, the first two albums, Thin Lizzy and Shades of a Blue Orphanage (1972), show a band struggling to find it's signature sound. However, there are several solid tracks on the first two albums. The original lineup ends its run on a high note with 1973's Vagabonds of the Western World.

The classic Thin Lizzy lineup gets its start with 1974's Nightlife album. While new guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson display a bit of their future firepower on tracks like Sha La La and It's Only Money, the album is markedly mellow with such laid-back tracks as the title track, She Knows, and Frankie Carroll.

1975's Fighting album would see Thin Lizzy hone their sound into a tight, melodic hard rock. Tracks such as Fighting My Way Back, Suicide, and Freedom Song would show more edge while not losing melody. The ballad Wild One and moody Spirit Slips Away make Fighting a great album from front to back.

Thin Lizzy would burst onto the world stage in 1976 with the release of Jailbreak. The title track and breakthrough single The Boys Are Back in Town propels the band to a much larger audience. Additionally, this strong effort is rounded out with such musical gems as Romeo and the Lonely Girl and Emerald.

Thin Lizzy

1976 would see two releases from the band. Johnny the Fox, while not as successful as the previous album, boasts an impressive track list. Songs like Don't Believe a Word, Massacre, Old Flame, and Borderline would continue to show the diversity of song-craft from this band.

Furthermore, Thin Lizzy would continue to impress in 1977 with the release of Bad Reputation. While marred with personnel issues during production, the album still delivers. Brian Robertson is in and out of the band during the making of this release, leaving Scott Gorham to handle the bulk of the guitar playing. Nevertheless, Bad Reputation is loaded with fantastic songs such as the title-track, Opium Trail, and the heartfelt Southbound.

Thin Lizzy would document their awe-inspiring live sets with 1978's Live and Dangerous. Produced by Tony Visconti, the album would becomes a musical gateway drug for many aspiring rock musicians. Named by many as the greatest live rock album ever created, it is a blistering live document.

Thin Lizzy

Gary Moore, who had subbed previously over time for Brian Robertson, becomes a full member of Thin Lizzy in time for the next album. Black Rose: A Rock Legend is touted by many fans as the band's finest work. Songs such as Do Anything You Want to Do, Waiting for an Alibi, and Sarah do a great job of showing up the band's sense of melody and technical proficiency.

Gary Moore's tenure doesn't last long and guitarist Snowy White is brought in for 1980's Chinatown album. Considered by some as a letdown in comparison to Black Rose, it still boasts some impressive songs such as the anthemic We Will Be Strong, Sweetheart, and Killer On the Loose.

1981's Renegade album is a divisive one among Thin Lizzy fans. The choices of keyboardist Darren Wharton and noted heavy metal producer Chris Tsangarides leaves some fans wondering if Thin Lizzy is abandoning their sound. While different, Renegade still has plenty of strong material including Leave This Town, No One Told Him, and the incredibly dark Angel of Death.

Thin Lizzy releases their final album in 1983. Thunder and Lightning is a strong way to go out. Featuring the playing of John Sykes and, again, produced by Chris Tsangarides, the album is a ferocious final sonic document of a band that should have ruled the world. Songs like the title track, Cold Sweat, and The Holy War close out the Thin Lizzy canon with a bang.

New Noize KISS Edition - Ep350

With so much happening in the KISS world, we thought we'd return with a KISS Edition of New Noize! In this hour-plus talk, we get down to our thoughts on the nuts and bolts of the KISS world in 2019; and boy is it active!

KISS kicked off the beginning of their End of the Road tour in Vancouver this week. Specifically, the stage is massive and is getting lots of attention. Additionally, the specter of backing tracks being piped through the sound system is being discussed. Is the new KISS show live or is it Memorex? We'll dissect and give our thoughts.

Also of note, on the eve of the new KISS tour, Ace Frehley took aim at his former band mates; blasting Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley with some serious allegations. Have Paul and Gene cost Ace millions of dollars due to badmouthing him? Did Gene really make a pass at Ace's girlfriend? Consequently, did Ace even actually write the salvo that was launched via his social media? We'll examine and give you our take.

New Noize

Finally, the Vinnie Vincent saga takes yet another major twist. After lots of silence from Vinnie, the promoter, as well as Rocketown, the two shows scheduled in Nashville for February 8th and 9th have been cancelled by the promoter. According to him, Vinnie backed out of the shows. Subsequently, Vinnie (and his attorney) released statements essentially saying he backed out of the shows due to non-payment. Either way, the remaining fans of Mr. Vincent are, once again, left disappointed. Does this pay out in court? Will the ticket buyers get their refunds? Will there be another concert scheduled and who would trust that the show will happen? We give our take on this circus.

As a result of all of this, there's no shortage of drama within the KISS Kamp. There's been speculation that the band would eventually launch a reality show. This begs the question, are we living through it right now?

We hope you enjoy New Noize KISS Edition and SHARE with a friend!

Albums Unleashed - TESLA Mechanical Resonance with Troy Luccketta Ep349

This week Tesla's Troy Luccketta joins us to discuss the making of Mechanical Resonance. Released in December of 1986, Mechanical Resonance introduced this Sacramento-based 5 piece to the world. Produced by the duo of Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero, the album peaked at 32 on the Billboard charts. Additionally, it provided Tesla with some bonafide material that still gets played live today including Modern Day Cowboy, Cumin' Atcha Live, and Little Suzi.

Mechanical Resonance

In this long-form discussion, Troy shares the origin story of Tesla. Details covered include the name change from City Kidd, marathon writing sessions, who's responsible for the name Tesla, and much more! As always, we also go track by track with Troy to get recollections of the making of each song.

2019 is shaping up to be a big year for Tesla. While Troy provides lots of great stories of the making of Mechanical Resonance, he also fills us in on the current state of the band. The new album, Shock, is slated for release in March of 2019. Consequently, the band is set to hit the road extensively. One of those dates is February 19th, in Nashville at the legendary Ryman Auditorium. To see such a great band in a venue with acoustics such as this is something you won't forget. So, if you are anywhere Nashville on February 19th, join Chris and Aaron for a killer night of live music with Tesla!

DIO-CEMBER VOL2 - Ep346

We close out the year in excellent fashion with DIO-CEMBER VOL2! We left off last week with Ronnie James Dio fronting Black Sabbath. Inasmuch as the chemistry was palatable, Ronnie needs and change and things pick up in 1983. The Holy Diver album is an absolute powerhouse because of its lineup. Guitarist Vivian Campbell, bassist Jimmy Bain, and drummer Vinny Appice were the perfect arsenal to back Ronnie up. Accordingly, the results are made clear in the material they released. To follow up Holy Diver with such strong albums as Last in Line and Sacred Heart speaks to the power of this lineup.

DIO-CEMBER VOL2

DIO-CEMBER VOL2 explores the many changes that took place in Ronnie's career. While the original lineup gets plenty of love in this episode, we also aim to show you that fantastic material was released well after they ceased to be a unit. Consequently, you'll get tracks from DIO albums including Dream Evil, Lock Up the Wolves, Strange Highways, Magica, Killing the Dragon, and Master of the Moon. Additionally, Aaron spins a great track from the Heaven and Hell lineup.

Ronnie James Dio may no longer be with us but he leaves a musical legacy that endures. Indeed, his incomparable voice raised the bar for such legends as Richie Blackmore and Tony Iommi. Additionally, the impressive material that he put out through the DIO is an undeniable template to the greatness of Heavy Metal. We hope you've enjoyed DIO-CEMBER.

DIO-CEMBER VOL2 is the end of our two-part tribute to the great Ronnie James Dio. However, there's always next year!

DIO-CEMBER Vol1 - Ep345

We celebrate the holidays this week by releasing volume 1 of a 2 part special on a legend; DIO-CEMBER Vol1 is here! In this special, we pay tribute to the late, great Ronnie James Dio. This week's entry has us focusing on Ronnie's first decade in the rock world 1972-1981.

Ronald Padavona was born in New Hampshire in 1942. His family would soon move to New York where he would be raised around music. Beginning at the age of 5, Ronnie was a born-performer. Stints playing trumpet and bass would lead the way to Ronnie fronting bands. After changing his name to Dio around 1960, his first real step in the world of rock would be taken in 1972. ELF's self-titled debut album features Ronnie and childhood friends performing while Deep Purple legends Roger Glover and Ian Paice produced. This would lead to extended touring opening for Purple and, eventually, the formation of Richie Blackmore's Rainbow.

DIO-CEMBER Vol1

Rainbow's history is well-covered but, in short, the Dio-led version of the band is legendary in its output. Richie Blackmore's Rainbow, Rising, and Long Live Rock & Roll are testaments to the powerful partnership between the singer and guitarist.

Unfortunately, the clash of egos would lead to Ronnie leaving Rainbow. On the other hand, rock history was waiting to be changed as Dio would then team up with Black Sabbath who had recently parted ways with Ozzy Osbourne. The newfound chemistry between Dio and guitarist Tony Iommi was undeniable. As a result, Black Sabbath would release two landmark albums with Ronnie; Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules. Despite the incredible material, it would be a short-lived union. But, that's for us to discuss on volume 2.

We hope you enjoy DIO-CEMBER Vol 1 - Ep345 and SHARE with a friend!

1981 Year in Review Part 2 - Ep344

We're back this week to tackle the who, what, when, where and why of the second half of our 1981 Year in Review Part 2!

July of 1981 is a strong month for the rock genre. Strong efforts include releases by Foreigner, Def Leppard, and the Ramones. Additionally, some great under the radar albums by Demon and New England help bolster and already solid month.

The month of August is a busy one in news and pop culture. The launch of MTV on August 1st is a landmark moment that's about to turn the music world on its head. Also taking place in August of 1981, John Lennon assassin Mark David Chapman is sentenced. Furthermore, a fantastic musical release by Brad Whitford and Derek St. Holmes is getting attention.

1981 Year in Review Part 2

September of 1981 is filled with great rock music as well as a shocking personnel change. The month is marked with solid outings by Triumph, Grand Funk Railroad, Michael Schenker Group, KIX, and Alice Cooper. Additionally, Iron Maiden do the unthinkable and switch lead singers right as the band is beginning its ascent.

The music news for October of 1981 includes a young Prince being boo'd off the stage while opening for the Rolling Stones. Also, music piracy is on the radar as the "Home Taping is Killing Music" campaign is launched. Music releases for October include new solo material from Ozzy Osbourne as well as a big release from his previous band, Black Sabbath. Notably, KISS venture into uncharted waters with a new look and a strange concept album.

Hollywood death gripped the United States in November of 1981. Famed actress Natalie Wood tragically drowns while on a boat ride with two other notable thespians. Mystery continues to surround the case. Also of note, porn star John Holmes is arrested, and later acquitted, in the Laurel Canyon "Wonderland" murders. Additionally, November of 1981 is highlighted by big releases from Motley Crue and AC/DC.

All of this is covered this week as well as classic commercials in our 1981 Year in Review Part 2! We hope you enjoy and SHARE with a friend!

Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977 Ep342

Filmmaker Andrew Sgambati is with us this week to talk about The Greatest Show on Earth as well as to pick our Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977! While there's a ton of controversy surrounding the Hottest Band in the Land in 2018 we're happy to have Andrew on to discuss a time when all was right in the world. The mid-1970's were a magical time for KISS. The strength of their six studio albums and two live albums propelled the band into the heights of pop culture consciousness in 1977. Inspired by such a special era for the band, Andrew channeled that inspiration into making The Greatest Show on Earth; a concert film/documentary sourced from video from live 1977 concerts and audio from Alive II.

Vinnie Vincent Special vol6 - Ep341

Promoter Joe D'Angelo joins us for Vinnie Vincent Special vol6; our thoughts on Miami, Memphis, and more. We said we'd never do another one of these but with recent events taking place, we had to chime in. In this latest volume, Joe tells us about his experience booking and working with Vinnie Vincent. Vinnie appeared in Miami for The Gathering KISS Kruise Preparty. He appeared for two meet and greet days as well as a performance with Four by Fate onstage for a few songs. Joe gives us the details on what it's like working with Vinnie, how he was to the fans, as well as his thoughts on the onstage performance. We also give our thoughts on Vinnie's performance of Lick It Up, I Love It Loud, and Cold Gin.

[caption id="attachment_47584" align="alignright" width="350"]

Vinnie Vincent Special vol6

[/caption]

Moving on from Miami, Joe stays with us to discuss our thoughts (at that time) about the upcoming 2 night stand at Graceland in Memphis. We delve into what are expectations would be for the fans that are traveling to Tennessee, how ticket sales seemed to be going and speculation on what would go down.

A few days after recording with Joe, a Vinnie Vincent bombshell was dropped. The Memphis shows have been postponed (just weeks away from their confirmed dates) and the show is being moved to Nashville in February. While refunds and exchanges seem to be available to ticket buyers, it became apparent quickly that a number of Vinnie Vincent fans were going to be mightily inconvenienced due to this short notice schedule/city change. We give our unfiltered thoughts on this whole mess and state what we think is going to happen (or not happen) in Nashville in February of 2019.

We hope you enjoy Vinnie Vincent Special vol6 - Ep341 and SHARE with a friend.

Type O Negative Discussion - Ep339

We're wishing you a Happy Halloween this week with our Type O Negative Discussion! Patreon DBG VIP and donor to the ROCKNPOD Expo Andy Connors joins us to break down the history of this legendary Brooklyn band.

The roots of Type O Negative stretch back to the 1980's when Peter (Ratajczyk) Steele and Josh Silver perform in local metal band Fallout. This would lead to Roadrunner act Carnivore and then morph into Type O Negative with Steele, Silver, drummer Sal Abruscato, and Kenny Hickey.

Type O Negative

In this long form discussion, Andy shares with us the history of Type O Negative. From the debut album Slow, Deep, and Hard through 2007's Dead Again, they blazed a trail of dark, sludgy metal that had a sound all its own. 5 Stars

Take a cheese head and pair him up with someone that elevates him to stand at the top of the mountain and be more than the mouth of the south. That someone being the catalyst for an earth shaking movement, who isn't contractually obligated to kick ass, but just does. Together they are a force of nature, a natural disaster waiting to envelop your ears with more entertainment than most can handle. Accuse them of anything you want, but the only thing they're guilty of is loving music, and putting out quality shows. You feel me? Heck yeah!

Top 5 Pantera Songs

In honor of episode 333 we?re spinning our Top 5 Pantera Songs! It?s been 18 years since the last Pantera studio release and both Vinnie and Dime are no longer with us. But even so, the music they left behind still reverberates today.

With the exception of the lesser-known ?Glamtera? years, Pantera burst onto a turbulent music world. Indeed, the early 90's were a time of great transition. Notably, grunge was driving out ?hair? metal; causing divisions among the music-buying public. Brothers Vinnie and Darrell Abbott, Rex Brown, and Philip Anselmo lit a fire that burned bright and inspired thousands. Considering the environment, for a metal band from Texas to capture the public?s attention and unite different cliques is remarkable. Additionally, the wild, untamed stories of excess while on tour only helped to build the Pantera legend.

Top 5 Pantera Songs

Choosing our Top 5 Pantera Songs was no easy task. Since both of us are huge fans, we could have easily picked five contenders off each album! This week we give your our favorites. They come from such classic sonic platters as Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, The Great Southern Trendkill, Official Live: 101 Proof, and Reinventing the Steel.

Pantera is no stranger to Decibel Geek Podcast. We?ve featured their music several times and even devoted a couple of previous episodes to the Cowboys from Hell. Click the links below for those episodes after you listen to this one!

Albums Unleashed - Devil Without a Cause with Kenny Olson Ep330

Original member of Kid Rock's Twisted Brown Trucker Band Kenny Olson brings some amazing stories this week! Devil Without a Cause was unleashed on the world 20 years ago and it's place in music history is solidified.

Kenny Olson

In this long-form talk, Kenny Olson gives the backstory of how a diverse group of Detroit musos found each other, blended together a sound like no other, and went out and dominated the world.  The late 90's were a difficult time for guitar driven rock music. The grunge era had come to an end and the mainstream world was preoccupied with pop tarts and boy bands rising up the charts. To have a foul-mouthed white rapper spitting bars over a rhythm section that would make Motown proud and a guitar duo that could simultaneously belt out the blues while ripping your face off sharing space on TRL is one of the most unique success stories we've ever heard.

Kenny Olson goes incredibly in depth in this long for talk; sharing stories on the making of the album as well as experiences that came out of its success. You'll also get an update on the amazing things he's been up to since including his new band 7 Day Binge.

Your First KISS - Ep329

We're back this week to wrap up KISSMAS in July by calling YOU to ask about Your First KISS! We hit up Skype this week to talk to friends, fellow podcasters, musicians, etc to get the stories of their first exposure to KISS. It's a fun trip through the rolodex talking about the Hottest Band in the Land!

Additionally, you'll get a cool one-on-one chat that Aaron Camaro had with his father-in-law Jimmy. As a teen, Jimmy was one of the few lucky people in Nashville to see their first live performance in Music City. The venue was Muther's Music Emporium and Jimmy's recollections of that gig in 1974 are really cool to hear!

We hope you've enjoyed the 2018 series of KISSmas in July episodes. Hearing about Your First KISS was a nice way to cap off a fun month every year. We hope you enjoy Your First KISS and SHARE with a friend!

Peter Criss in the 80s - Ep328

Nashville-based guitarist Mike Hutchens is with us this week to talk about his gig with Peter Criss in the 80s. Given that there is so little known about Peter's activities during the mid-1980's, this talk is an eye opener. How did Peter and Stan Penridge decide to base out of Nashville in 1984? How did they choose the band members? Why was the band named Alliance? Those questions, and many more, are answered by Mike in this discussion.

Peter Criss in the 80s

The 1984-1985 era of Peter Criss' life is a bit of a mystery. Reuniting with songwriting partner Stan "Doc" Penridge, they formed a band dubbed The Desperate Men in Nashville that had a much different sound than what KISS fans were accustomed to. Additionally, the band name changed to Alliance in the process. They would make their live debut at a radio festival in Nashville titled One for the Sun. Also on the bill, RATT and Alcatrazz; but this band sounded much different. After the Music City debut, Alliance would go on to perform just a handful of dates after recording some demos. What caused the band to end so quickly? Mike sheds light on the subject.

We want to thank Mike Hutchens for this in-depth discussion of Peter Criss in the 80s. Check out Mike's material in the links below. We hope you enjoyed Peter Criss in the 80s and SHARE with a friend!

Our Favorite Bob Kulick KISS Moments

We're kicking off KISSmas in July with our favorite Bob Kulick KISS moments. Bob Kulick has a very interesting place in KISStory. His relationship goes back before the band was even complete. Auditioning ahead of the eventually-chosen Ace Frehley, Bob left an indelible impression on Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley that would pay dividends down the road.

Bob Kulick's performances on KISS records are undeniable. His leads on the studio side of ALIVE II, especially on Larger than Life and All American Man, shine through as well as some great playing on Paul Stanley's 1978 KISS solo album.

[caption id="attachment_44752" align="alignright" width="350"]

Bob Kulick

[/caption]

Additionally, Bob's writing talent features on the Unmasked album with his contribution to Naked City; a complex track that digs into Beatles influences and pop sensibilities.

By 1982 KISS were in a confused state and Bob is brought back to help steer the ship in a rockier direction on Killers. His leads on the compilation album would help the band regain a foothold in credibility as they emerged from a very experimental phase.

In addition to us sharing our favorite Bob Kulick KISS moments, we have some cool excerpts of a fun conversation we recently had with the man himself. Between the great songs and great stories, we think you'll agree that KISSmas in July is off to a great start.

Conversation with Damon Johnson - Ep326

Damon Johnson joins us this week for a discussion of his incredible career. At the present time, Damon has his hands full with Black Star Riders and his upcoming solo album Memoirs of an Uprising.

Damon Johnson really brings it in this long-form talk with some great stories from his career and life. From Brother Cane's early days opening for such legends as Van Halen, Aerosmith and Robert Plant among others. Additionally, Damon shares his memories of Brother Cane navigating a shifty musical tide in the 1990's.

[caption id="attachment_44329" align="alignright" width="350"]

Damon Johnson

[/caption]

Damon's post-Brother Cane career has taken many twists and turns. Collaborations with Sammy Hagar, Faith Hill, Damn Yankees, Carlos Santana, and Slave to the System (featuring members of Queensryche) show the range of talent in his arsenal.

In 2004, Damon Johnson was brought into the Alice Cooper band. In this conversation, he shares his memories of getting the gig, his relationship with Alice, and what he's learned from his time in the band.

2011 saw Damon get to live out another childhood dream as he joined Thin Lizzy. Touring under that banner, he formed a strong chemistry with guitarist Scott Gorham and singer Ricky Warwick. The seeds for Black Star Riders were planted.

Ultimately, Black Star Riders would take the Thin Lizzy spirit and breathe life into a well-oiled machine; releasing three solid albums of material. As of 2018, the catalog, including All Hell Breaks Loose, The Killer Instinct, and Heavy Fire, has built a devoted global fan base.

Aside from band work with living legends, Damon has a great catalog of solo material. His first album, Dust, was released in 2000. Release would come along in 2010 and Echo in 2016. A live album, Birmingham Tonight, represents 2017 for Damon Johnson.

For 2018, Damon has set his sights on another solo album. Memoirs of an Uprising is being funded through Pledge Music. As of this episode release, the project is 87% funded with a deadline two weeks away. Decibel Geek really wants to help push this project over the finish line and we'd like YOUR help. Click the link below to make a pledge. As you'll see, there's a lot of cool options including CDs, Vinyl, and signed items, and tons more.
