Label Wars (1980-1984) - Ep555

This week we look back to a time when the music industry was, mostly, run through a handful of record labels. With big money to be made, record companies such as Capitol, Epic, Columbia, and Atlantic wielded a lot of power. Buyouts were happening such as in the case of Polygram acquiring Casablanca Records which would result in a very in-flux KISS winding up on Mercury Records. Smaller labels, while limited financially, were successful at times due to scouting new talent and breaking it. This circumstance would lead labels such as Elektra, Metal Blade, and Megaforce to be on the ground floor of some legendary careers and genres. In this discussion, we discuss all of these record labels, many of the notable artists that inhabited their rosters, how they stacked up in the rock world, and much more. The era we're focusing on this time is 1980-1984.  Was the rule and oversight of the early 80's music industry a good thing? Is today's wide open musical climate a better thing for artists? Let us know what YOU think in the comments! We hope you enjoy Label Wars (1980-1984) and SHARE with a friend. Decibel Geek is a proud member of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Contact Us! The End of KISS(?) - Ep554

With this week marking the end of KISS as a touring entity, we thought we'd serve up a Torpedo Dudes 4 All! This is Decibel Geek's KISS-exclusive podcast and there's plenty to discuss!   KISS recently had to cancel shows in Ottawa, Toronto, and Knoxville due to Paul Stanley contracting the flu. The band got back on track for Indianapolis and is moving forward with the final dates. Between the Ottawa and Toronto cancellations a tragic car accident/explosion made news as a possible terror attack. How does this (potentially) relate to KISS? Listen to find out.   As the band prepares for this weekend's final shows at Madison Square Garden, we discuss our thoughts on the current lineup, how we got to our opinions, and the multiple KISS-themed doings in NYC this week. Activities discussed include the NYC KISS takeover and, of course, the shows themselves.   It was confirmed recently that no ex-members, including Bruce Kulick, will be guesting at the shows. Will there be any surprises or shakeups for these landmark shows? We give our predictions. Speaking of ex-members, Ace Frehley released the title track to his upcoming album '10,000 Volts' which is due next February. We give our reactions to the new single, our hopes for the album, and more.   We hope you enjoy Torpedo Dudes 4 All and consider joining us on Patreon as a DBG VIP! The Best & Worst of Led Zeppelin Part 2 (1974-1982) - Ep544

We're back to discuss the second half of the Led Zeppelin discography as we pick our Best & Worst tracks from each album. Led Zeppelin's career from 1974-1982 was a period of great success, with the band releasing some of their most iconic albums, including Physical Graffiti, Presence, and In Through the Out Door. They also toured extensively during this time, playing to sold-out crowds around the world. However, the band's success was not without its challenges. In 1977, drummer John Bonham died suddenly, leaving the band devastated. They eventually regrouped and released one more album, Coda, in 1982, but they never fully recovered from Bonham's death. The band disbanded in 1980. In this episode we each pick what we think is the best song and worst song from each album during this period. Will we agree? Will we argue? You'll have to listen to find out! Let us know what YOUR best and worst songs are for each of these albums in the comments section! Alternate KISStory - Ep540

July may be over but KISSmas isn't as we time travel to another dimension with Alternate KISStory. Imagine, if you will, KISStory playing out differently. Imagine that certain albums were never released. Imagine the original band splitting up at a different time; and the subsequent solo efforts. Imagine certain replacement members never entering the picture and a reunion tour happening at a completely different time. Imagine a reunion album being released in a different era. It's interesting to think about and that's what we did. Thanks to a brilliant idea by Aaron Camaro and a fully-fleshed out alternate history, we present to you what might have taken place in a different dimension. Different, but still plausible. Additionally, Chris and Aaron will reveal their idea for a reunion album by KISS in a much different era. You'll get the album title and tracklist. Also, be sure to check the Decibel Geek social media pages for reveals of their album artwork! We'd love to hear your thoughts on Alternate KISStory, how you think it would have differed, and what YOUR picks would be for a reunion album from the era mentioned. Cadillac Dreams with Bill Barnett - Ep538

We continue KISSmas in July with a trip back to 1975 in Cadillac, Michigan! Bill Barnett was a member of the Cadillac High School football team and was at ground zero for one of the most unique moments in KISStory as KISS visited Cadillac, Michigan. If you're unfamiliar with the history, we'll quickly bring you up to speed. The 1974 Cadillac High School football team was in a slump. To motivate the team, assistant coach Jim Neff started playing KISS music in the weight room and locker room. To take things a step further, defensive formations were named after KISS songs. This unique approach would go on to fire up the squad and result in the team winning a title. Realizing what a unique story this was, Coach Neff contacted KISS' management office and told them the story. The band and management seized on the unique story and agreed to come to Cadillac in 1975 during the school's homecoming week. The band would perform a concert in the school gym, meet with city leaders the next morning and finish things off being featured in the homecoming parade downtown. In this discussion, Bill Barnett shares his memories of being a player on that KISStoric football team, his memories of Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter, and much more. The story of how the whole event came together has to be heard to be believed as well as the legacy it's created. Bill also fills us in on different potential film projects that might be happening to document the event in the future; one of which involves a rock legend coming to Cadillac himself to research. The Best & Worst of Led Zeppelin Part 1 (1969-1973) - Ep534

We're back this week to dive deep into the discography of one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Led Zeppelin. Specifically, we'll be exploring their albums released between 1969 and 1973, picking our favorite and least favorite songs from each. Led Zeppelin, the iconic rock band formed in 1968, released their self-titled debut album in 1969. The album featured a diverse range of rock and blues-influenced tracks, showcasing the band's talent and establishing their unique sound. The album opens with the energetic "Good Times Bad Times" and includes other standout tracks like "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," "Dazed And Confused," and "Communication Breakdown." Led Zeppelin's debut album set the stage for their future success and solidified their status as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Led Zeppelin II - 1969 Following the success of their debut, Led Zeppelin released their second album, Led Zeppelin II, later in 1969. The album featured a heavier sound and showcased the band's growth as songwriters and performers. It includes the iconic track "Whole Lotta Love," along with other notable songs such as "What Is and What Should Never Be," "Heartbreaker," and "Ramble On." Led Zeppelin II further established the band's dominance in the rock music scene and demonstrated their ability to create powerful and memorable rock anthems. Led Zeppelin III - 1970 In 1970, Led Zeppelin released their third studio album, Led Zeppelin III. This album showcased a more acoustic and folk-influenced sound compared to their previous releases. It includes tracks like "Immigrant Song," "Since I've Been Loving You," and "Gallows Pole," which blend the band's signature rock sound with elements of folk and blues. Led Zeppelin III displayed the band's versatility and willingness to experiment with different musical styles, earning critical acclaim and further expanding their fan base. Led Zeppelin IV - 1971 Led Zeppelin's fourth album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV or untitled, was released in 1971 and became one of the band's most iconic and commercially successful albums. It features the legendary track "Stairway to Heaven," a monumental rock epic that has become one of the most celebrated songs in rock history. The album also includes other hits such as "Black Dog," "Rock and Roll," and "When the Levee Breaks." Led Zeppelin IV solidified the band's status as rock legends and remains a classic album revered by fans and musicians alike. Houses of the Holy - 1972 In 1972, Led Zeppelin released their fifth studio album, Houses of the Holy. The album continued to push the boundaries of their sound, incorporating elements of funk, reggae, and even orchestral arrangements. Tracks like "The Song Remains the Same," "The Rain Song," and "No Quarter" showcased the band's musical maturity and their ability to create dynamic and atmospheric compositions. Houses of the Holy further cemented Led Zeppelin's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential rock bands of their time. Albums Unleashed Dangerous Toys with Jason McMaster - Ep527

This week we're joined by Jason McMaster to discuss the making of the 1989 self-titled debut from Dangerous Toys! As per usua with our Albums Unleashed episodes, we dig into many facets of this album as well as the circumstances around it. In this long-form discussion, Jason gives us the origin story of Dangerous Toys including how changes with his serious gig with progressive thrash band Watchtower would lead to him to moonlight with cover bands. One of these cover bands would turn into Dangerous Toys. The story behind how, basically, a party gig would turn into a major label band is pretty incredible. The chain of events, circumstances, and connections that would lead the band to being signed will surprise you. Additionally, Jason discusses the making of several songs on the album including 'Scared,' 'Sportin' a Woody,' 'Feels Like a Hammer,' 'Queen of the Nile' and more as well as what the studio environment was like with legendary producer Max Norman. Other interesting topics covered include the backstory of Bill Z. Bub, the band's mascot, hanging out on the Sunset Strip during the area's heyday, album photography done with Mark Weiss, a special promo jack-in-the-box item story that's crazy in and of itself and much more! If you love Dangerous Toys, this episode is a MUST-LISTEN! We thank Jason McMaster for being such a great guest with so many great stories! We're back to discuss all the happenings in the rock and metal world with Geekwire! The drama in the Motley Crue camp just continues to heat up. Between Mick Mars' lawsuit, Nikki Sixx's disparaging response, Carmine Appice getting into the action, and the potential for new music from the band, there's a lot to cover. We share our take on this situation. KISS' End of the Road tour continues to roll on but not without some speed bumps. In a recent show, Gene Simmons had to take a seat during the band's set due to dehydration. We discuss our thoughts on where things stand with the band and what the future may hold. Dolly Parton recently welcomed Nikki Sixx as a guest on her upcoming rock album. We share our thoughts on the non-creative song list for this upcoming project. Some good news in the Soundgarden world, as the dispute between Chris Cornell's widow and the surviving band members appears to have been settled. Other stories covered this week include Cherie Currie's thoughts on the slim chance of a Runaways reunion, Ozzy Osbourne looking rough, Blackie Lawless fighting back issues, Mr. Big potentially recording new music, Richie Blackmore and Deep Purple reunion rumors, new Great White music, and much more! Geekwire for Week of 04.07.23 - Ep522

We're back with all the latest happenings in the rock and metal world with Geekwire! Tragically, one person died and several were injured at a recent Morbid Angel show outside of Chicago. We discuss this sad situation and are sending good vibes to the people affected. Chris recently ventured to the theater to see the Neil Bogart biopic 'Spinning Gold.' Did it accurately portray Neil and the Casablanca Records story? Was it a mess of factual inaccuracies? Above all else, was it worth a watch? Chris gives his full review of the movie. Sebastian Bach recently pranked Skid Row fans by claiming a deluxe edition of 'Subhuman Race' was being released. Did this work as an April Fool's day gag? We give our thoughts. Other stories covered this week include Vinnie Vincent bringing Marq Torien on board for his next event in Nashville, Vivian Campbell professing his love for Phil Lynott, Udo Dirkschneider claiming his current band is more authentic than ACCEPT, and more. We also touch on the recent Ace Frehley and KISS drama (this was recorded before his recent followup interview). We hope you enjoy Geekwire for the week of April 7th, 2023 and SHARE with a friend! Geekwire for Week of 02.20.23 - Ep517

We're back to discuss all the current happenings in the rock and metal world with Geekwire! We start with a double-shot of Megadeth-related news as the band proper will be joined by former guitarist Marty Friedman at their upcoming Budokan show in Tokyo. On a less-positive note, former guitarist Jeff Young didn't hold back in his opinion of Dave Mustaine's current talent level. We share our thoughts on both of these stories. KISS manager Doc McGhee had a very awkward exchange in an interview recently. When pressed by Synchin' Stanley about Paul Stanley's use of vocal tracks, Doc had a confusing answer. We share our thoughts on this news. Rolling Stone Magazine released a "Horrible Albums by Brilliant Artists" article which included KISS. Are they now claiming KISS are brilliant? We share our thoughts and take a peak at the article. Other artists covered this week include Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Geezer Butler, Bon Jovi, Dio, and Dave Grohl among others. All that and rock start birthdays, death anniversaries, and upcoming releases we're excited for. We hope you enjoy Geekwire for the week of 02.20.23 and SHARE with a friend! The Best & Worst of Guns N Roses with Craig Gass - Ep514

We're back with a great talk with a great guest as comedian Craig Gass joins us for The Best & Worst of Guns N Roses! Formed on the Sunset Strip in 1985, Guns N Roses quickly ascended to the top of the rock world with their debut album 'Appetite for Destruction.' Along with the success would come controversy as the band truly lived the rock star lifestyle. The combustible mix of attitude, agression, talent, and addiction made the band stand out from their peers. Even their stripped down look would signal to the music scene that times were changing. The band would go on to release the massive 'Use Your Illusion' parts 1 and 2 and graduate to stadium tours. But, just as quickly as they rose, the band started to fall apart. Members leaving one by one would cause a long dormant period for the band while singer Axl Rose labored over his opus 'Chinese Democracy.' By the time the album finally was released, it did more to confuse fans than excite them. Guns N Roses have found new success in recent years with the return of guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan. In this discussion, we pick our favorite and least favorite track from each album. Additionally, we share our stories of how the band first came on our radar as well as our memories of each album. Craig Gass brings some great stories to the table as he's had multiple interactions with the band members going back to nearly the beginning. It's a fun talk about a very intriguing band. We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst with Guns N Roses with Craig Gass and SHARE with a friend! You can also meet us and Craig Gass at ROCKNPOD Weekend coming up in Nashville March 17-19!
