A coming-of-age, slice of life, audio fiction comedy with a difference. Our ageing heroine shares senior moments, family relationships and adventures—entertaining and a wee bit provocative. In Season 6 some ancient Greek deities choose her to ’save the planet’ – if she only knew what her superpower was. Written, performed and produced by Aussie-born, Liverpool-based actress, singer-songwriter and performance poet Flloyd Kennedy with guest performers on 3 continents.

★★★★★ ”This is delightful storytelling from Flloyd Kennedy. Gentle but deceptively sharp; underestimate the characters populating this podcast at your own peril. The writing, performance and music are all a joy.”

Special Announcement: Please excuse this break in transmission - Episode 6 was going to take us to Greece, where Helen is enjoying the scenery and the sunshine. But in view of the terrible tragedy of the wildfires presently affecting large parts of Greece, including Athens itself, I'd decided to postpone that episode till next week. In the meantime, here is news regarding the development of the new podcast, "Baked Off!" which I hope to be able to bring to you later this year.

Helen has gone missing, so daughter Janey and granddaughter Susie team up to track her down. This episode is an experiment, in that it takes the form of a series of telephone calls. A bit like the old 'epistolatory' genre, only using message bank rather than the post office. Let me know if you think it works - drop your response at https://amIoldyet.com/reviews - just a few words would be great.
Helen, Janey, Susie and Jennifer are all played by me, Flloyd Kennedy.

Helen has received a note from Jennifer, her neighbour who lives in the flat across the corridor with her husband Harry, and her 103 year old grandmother Nana Madeleine. Helen and Madeleine have always enjoyed sharing their thoughts on life, death, mortality and immortality without fear or favour. And this time is no exception, although with a heightened sense of immediacy. Nana Madeleine tries to sleep, but someone needs to speak to her, and the result is - much laughter. Season 10 kicks off with lots of new beginnings. I'm so happy to be part of the Fable & Folly network, such an honour to be in the company of all the best audio fiction on the airwaves. Here in Am I Old Yet?'s world, it's Helen's 80th birthday, and her friends and family step up to help her to celebrate. Including Hera, Queen of the Greek Gods, and Seffi - otherwise known as Persephone, the Goddess of Spring. Zeus can't be there in person, but he has found a way of making his presence known. There will be feasting, and there will be a nap. What more could one ask? Do stick around till the end, there's a gift for you too.

A glorious spring day, plus the need to keep moving, so I took my phone for a walk and recorded some thoughts. High on my agenda at the moment is the need to keep promoting "Am I Old Yet?", the will to start recording "Baked Off!" and the long held desire to raise the profile of the human voice—what it is, what it means, and what we stand to lose if we fail to respect it. Also, stick around till the end and you'll be introduced to a marvellous podcast, "The Final Say", with Debra Jarvis, available at https://thefinalsaypodcast.com.

So new, that I haven't finished writing it yet. But I'm excited enough to want to share with you something about it. Once I've finished writing, there will be a full cast readthrough, then recording and all the production work begins. If you have clicked on 'subscribe' or 'follow' in your podcasting app, you'll be notified whenever there's something new to listen to. And if you invite just one other person to listen to "Am I Old Yet? " - well, it would help to keep it going.

Episode 12, bring Season 3 to a close. Susie has been delegated to try to find out why Helen, her grandmother, is so unhappy. It's obvious Helen doesn't want her memoir to be published, but no one can understand why, and her family are very worried about her. It seems an over-anxious daughter is nothing compared to an over-anxious mother.
cast: Flloyd Kennedy as Susie and Helen.

I wrote this poem last July, shortly after the first lockdown began to open up. The acting college where I had been teaching voice part time prior to lockdown invited me to come back into the studio to teach, and I didn't consider it safe—for myself, or for the students—so I declined. It occurred to me that I would almost certainly never be offered such work again. I had been extremely lucky to have kept on teaching at the tertiary level for as long as I had, well into my 70s.
Thoughts on ageing weren't new to me. But this seemed more pressing, especially with all the understanding by that stage that anyone over 80 was especially vulnerable to Covid-19. When 80 is only 4 years away, and those years are accelerating by faster than a Formula 1 car driven by Jensen Button, it feels like tomorrow.
Hence this poem.
It was published in October 2020 as part of the collection "Sunsets & Kites", which is available from Amazon online.
Enjoy! And stay safe.
