https://Art2Life.com - Bibby Gignilliat had stopped painting years ago because she had a critical teacher who made her feel like she was talentless. So she spent years as a computer programmer, worked in adventure travel, and even ran her own cooking business. By all measures of success, she was successful.
She continuously pushed her dream of being an artist and having her own gallery show aside. Today, Bibby and I are painting in her studio. She’s an accomplished mixed-media artist who incorporates her travels into her art.
It all started because she was willing to push aside what she’d been told about herself and started listening to herself. Bibby shares her path back to her art—and how she let her intuition lead the way—in this episode of the Art2Life Podcast.

https://Art2Life.com - As an artist, the thought of not knowing what comes next is bothersome. But “not knowing” is often necessary. Sometimes we have to spend time pondering what’s next.
We need to give ourselves space and time to sit with the discomfort of uncertainty. We have to get comfortable with the phenomenon of doing and not knowing.
I’m painting right now. I’m doing one thing at a time, uncertain what I will do next. I’m simply being present with what I’m making.

She wanted to get her hands dirty, so she dove into the 100-Day Project. She started playing with watercolors and made abstract doodles. She started drawing her feelings to express her creativity.
She’d post them on Instagram. Before she knew it, it became the anchor for her day. By the end of the 100 days, her life was changed. People would comment and say, “I’ve always felt this way and I’ve never had words for it.” Something extremely personal to her became universal. She found a community that resonated with her work. It became her guiding light.
Drawing her feelings led to a passion for art she never knew existed. She shares more about her journey to finding herself and helping others connect with their emotions in this wonderful conversation.

https://Art2Life.com - Silvia Poloto emigrated to the United States in the 90s. It was here that she stumbled on a knack for art—and it changed the trajectory of her life.
When Silvia was finishing her Master’s Degree, she started cutting out pieces from magazines and making collages. She started working with metal. Looking to learn more, she signed up for a class called “Metal Arts,” only to realize it was a jewelry-making class.
She spent her time in class creating small sculptures with the material. Her instructor was fascinated. She shared her art with him and he was impressed, convinced she had an art degree instead of one in engineering. That’s when she realized she might have a future in art.
She taught herself metalworking, painting and photography. With every subsequent work of art, her style evolves. She allows her inner self to direct the next piece.

https://Art2Life.com - The power dynamics at play in an organization can often make it difficult—if not impossible—to form connections with coworkers and superiors. It’s easy to let prejudices and insecurity get in the way. But an environment of collaboration and trust is key to successful organizations.
The truth is that as macho or hardened as someone seems, we’re all fragile. The human experience is challenging. Compassion and empathy are exceedingly important—yet exceedingly rare.
Adam Rosendahl combines music and art in a group setting that leads to groundbreaking and transformative results: connection between strangers. Everyone has a desperate longing to feel seen and heard.
In our conversation, Adam shares how Late Nite Art combines music, art, and collaboration to bring people together and help them feel seen.

When Covid hit, she—along with her husband and twin boys—embarked on a grand adventure: Sailing the world. They bought a catamaran and started their journey in New Zealand. Taking action and diving in wholeheartedly led to some of the best experiences of their lives.
In our candid conversation, Kristin shares what she’s learned on the journey about herself and her art, the power of being present, and her advice to those looking to embark on their own adventure.

https://Art2Life.com - Danielle LaPorte loves simplicity. The closer she gets to a heart-centered life, the more she craves it. It’s become a spiritual practice. She lets go of anything she hasn’t used for 6–12 months. She doesn’t buy mindlessly. Instead, everything in her home has a story, a reason behind buying it. Everything matters.
Simplicity requires letting go. It requires loosening your attachment to things that don’t matter. Are you able to take this approach in your art and your life? To be willing to make a different mark, make a mistake, and start over?
Go on a journey with us as we explore the art of letting go, shifting to simplicity, and of having the courage to make the first mark on a blank page.

https://Art2Life.com - Are you struggling to cast a vision for yourself, your art, or your business? Has imposter syndrome taken hold? Do you feel confident that you can make your dreams a reality?
Suzi Dafnis walked into a room with 30 other business owners about to start the art class I was offering our mastermind group, admittedly incredibly nervous. Though confident in any business environment, she felt like she shrunk into her feet when she walked into my class.
Yet she came out of the class having created something she’s proud of and found that she enjoyed the process. Today, Suzi joins me in the studio to talk about her journey in business. She firmly believes that if you have a dream that you believe in—and get a plan in place to make it happen—you can achieve it.
But just like you have to take your brush and make the first mark on a canvas, you have to take a step toward creating the business of your dreams. Join us to learn how to take that first step.

https://Art2Life.com - Louise Fletcher is an artist and teacher, gifted at helping her students connect with their emotions and unleash their artistic voice. But she wasn’t always aware of her gift.
She genuinely thought she had no artistic talent because she couldn’t sit in front of a canvas and execute a vision. When she learned that she could play with paint, and find joy in the process, it changed everything.
In this heartfelt conversation, we uncover the depths of finding one’s self-worth and embrace the concept that we must express every emotion in our art and life.

https://Art2Life.com - In this special throwback episode of Art2Life, we revisit one of our most beloved conversations with award-winning art critic Jerry Saltz.
Making art is hard enough, but hearing from others whether it is good or not is especially so. Every artist I know already has, hard-wired within them, a pretty tough critic. I certainly do. So I never have been particularly drawn to listening to more of them. I know, of course, art criticism is essential in the art world. I get all that, but truthfully, I have always been a little leery of outside criticism in case it made me stop making art. It feels safer to hear more from those who are actually making art. They were the ones I thought whose voices mattered. At least for me.
But today you are going to meet an art critic. But not the kind I imagined. Not at all. His name is Jerry Saltz. He is the Pulitzer Prize-winning, senior art critic and columnist for New York Magazine. He has a bajillion followers on Instagram and is a New York Times bestselling author. He also cares a ton about art and especially artists. Which isn’t surprising because he was one. He switched mid-career because, ironically, his inner critic wouldn’t leave him alone, and it all became too much.
Jerry is whip-smart, funny, and at times, daringly truthful. But this is what I love about him: he just tells the truth. Or rather his truth. That is rare these days. Jerry is the artist's art critic. He is so on our side and wants nothing more for us than to simply stay together and above all else, to keep making our art. Join me now for this startlingly vulnerable and caring conversation about art and life with one of the most revered voices in the art world: Jerry Saltz.

https://Art2Life.com - Artists are always asking questions. When you’re always questioning, it’s only natural that a lack of clarity arises. Your soul is always pulling you to the unknown.
We’re living in a world where opportunities are boundless. The curiosity to see what’s possible is a driving force. When you’re in congruence with who you are and what you’re making, it’s the best feeling in the world. And when the expression doesn’t match the creature, you must change.
Clarity is found through missteps, adventures, and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to see a world of possibilities. In this conversation, Noah and I walk through the journey of finding clarity in life and art.

https://Art2Life.com - There’s nothing like some time away from your art practice to build excitement for the creative road ahead. I recently took a backpacking trip with my daughters through the Maroon Bells, which is situated in the Elk Mountains of Colorado. Aside from an incredible time of connection with my family, it was also a great time to reflect on art, creativity, and the struggles we collectively share as artists. From my own personal challenges to the voice submissions we get on the website, I’m using this episode to share some timely thoughts about navigating the creative journey. Join me as I riff on humility, community, and healthy mindsets that positively impact your art and life.

Contrasts are interesting by virtue of what they are. They make art intriguing and exciting both to the artist and those who enjoy their work. Carl Heyward is a contemporary artist whose work is a powerful example of how the juxtaposition of ideas, colors, and even mediums can create a moving and powerful experience. His work centers around ideas of fragmentation, disparity, and collaboration, and the surprising part is that his art flows out of his process. He says that “In my case, the whole enterprise is questioned upon each studio session as an existential tightrope walk above an abyss.” It’s this process, an instinct you might call it, that enables him to produce harmonious but contrasting themes that are highly expressive.
At the time of this recording Carl was quite mindful of the stage of life he’s in. He sees himself being in his last phase of life and is therefore asking “What do I want to leave?” As we explore his approach to art, his creation of the Global Art Project, and his reflections on his current work, you’ll see how Carl himself is a focal point of contrasts, community, and collaboration.

Background and history on the Global Art Project [32:18]
Current projects Carl is working on and the what has captured his attention lately [44:51]
In a cultural milieu where the differences between people seem to be given far too much air time, Carl’s perspective on life and art is refreshing. He says, “Give me a lot of differences and I’ll find a commonality… give me anything and I can find a relationship between them. I can juxtapose or connect how objects relate to each other.” This is not only true of Carl when it comes to his art, but also when it comes to relationships between people.
In his role as a teacher, Carl recognizes that because of the differences between people, there are different ways to guide his students into clarity. What he says to prompt their thinking in a particular direction may be intended one way but interpreted entirely differently. He’s learned to be OK with that, to actually allow that different interpretation to guide the process for that student. Their individuality and perspective often surprise him and lead to good outcomes. For this reason, no workshop is ever the same. This variety, which comes from the unique perspective of each individual, enables Carl to be more excited with what he’s doing.
Repetition, trust, and integrity as a teacher and artistAs Carl works with students, he finds himself saying the same important things over and over. While the following are not quite “matras,” they are foundational aspects of art making that he thinks serve as important guides to his instruction.
The first of these has to do with repetition. Carl recognizes from his own experience that repetition of anything has the potential to become restrictive, creating artificial boundaries or “prison bars” around the creator and their work. But there is a kind of repetition that is helpful, repetition that forms into a healthy habit that advances an artist’s work and skill. Carl believes that as an instructor, the need to clearly distinguish between those two things falls on his shoulders. He must help his students understand the difference and adopt the habits that will serve their craft rather than enslave it.
A second oft-repeated phrase Carl finds himself saying is, “Trust yourself.” All artists, but particularly those who are just starting out are often overly critical of their work. Carl says that these new students aren’t yet able to understand that the development of truly good art and the frameworks and skills that produce it is a process that grows over time. He tries to kindly but clearly point out the self-deprecating commentary made by students and explain why it isn’t helpful.
And when it comes to both repetition and trust, it’s important to Carl that he not only teaches these things to his students, but that he is practicing them himself as he continues to create. He doesn’t want to be one who preaches things that he doesn’t practice himself.
This history and purpose of the Global Art ProjectThe Global Art Project grew out of another project that Carl initiated years ago. That initial project was called the “Knee Jerk Fragmentation Project.” That project involved 500 artists and 3000 pieces of art were produced. It was a one for one 5 x 7 postcard exchange between artists. Each artist would receive a piece from another artist, then add to it with their own creative work.
This led to the Global Art Project using a curated frag collection provided by members of the project. Behind this iteration project is the conscious awareness that artists often have leftover fragments of their work, things they don’t want to use or that they consider a failure. Carl realized that these “frags” could be a valuable art piece for someone else, spurring their interest or stirring up their creativity. The GAP is running on its own now, including 80 members and spanning 17 countries. It’s been a wonderful journey that addresses the high and low of what art can be. It intentionally provides collaborative aspects to artmaking and includes what Carl refers to as “the gallery museum elements, the intellectual elements, the fun elements, and the surprise elements of what art can be.” Listen to hear more about the GAP and how you can get involved.

https://Art2Life.com - A big theme that comes up frequently for the artists I work with is the idea of believing in yourself. Specifically, believing in yourself when others don’t. It’s completely understandable to care about what others think. Human beings are hardwired for community, after all. However, we can’t let someone else’s negative take keep us from the life we’re supposed to live and the art we’re supposed to make. Join me as I share a handful of thoughts to help you rise above the unbelief of others and overcome paralyzing fear in your art practice.

https://Art2Life.com - Separating the artists from the art we make is an essential and challenging part of the art-making journey. We have the tendency to believe that we are what we make. And in a lot of ways, that needs to be true. You can’t make unique and personal art without yourself as the key ingredient. However, if you have a white-knuckled attachment to your art it is impossible to make something like yourself. It will only ever be the clean, uncomplicated version of you that is forced and inauthentic. https://Art2Life.com - Have you ever looked at another artist, envious of the confidence their Instagram so clearly exudes? The reality is they are likely just as insecure as everyone else, but it doesn’t stop us from wishing we were like them. Then comparison starts us down a dangerous path of all the things we can’t be or achieve because we hate our last painting. Or we haven’t been able to sell our work. And the question inevitably floats into our brain: Am I a failure? The answer is a resounding no, but in that moment, it’s so hard to see beyond our current circumstances to find it.

Her wizardry and expertise lie in helping people gain confidence, and today we are going to dive into what that looks like for the artist’s journey. Join us for a conversation about gaining confidence, getting uncomfortable, being your own life coach, and taking control of your story. https://Art2Life.com - It takes time to figure out what you love so much that you need to create it. The only way to do that is to dive into your own personal inquiry. It can take 20 years, or it can take a couple of years, depending on how you approach this. The questions you ask, the instruction and mentorship you receive, and even the books you read can shape your artistic journey. This is why I teach! I want to help artists move into a space where they really love and are excited about their work. Join me as I share some insight into selling your art, everything that should happen first, and tips for running and growing your art business.

https://Art2Life.com - One of the amazing things about teaching and participating in art workshops are the people. I’d say about half of the “aha moments” come from just sitting around and talking. You’re surrounded by all these artists from all over the world with a wealth of different skills and experiences and you get to glean from all of them. Add one or two cocktails to the mix, and now you’ve got the kind of conversations that can literally change the direction and quality of your art journey. On this episode, I’m bringing that experience to wherever you get your podcasts.
While enjoying some downtime from teaching a workshop in Mexico, Terri and I turned on a mic and had workshop participants ask their burning questions about art-making. Specifically around what’s hard about bringing our art to life and how to overcome those challenges. https://Art2Life.com - How do you think of yourself as an artist? You may need to think of it more broadly than you’ve typically done. The reason is this: being an artist encompasses all that you are, everything that makes up your personality, perspective, passions, and existence. You can see that being an artist is much bigger than the fact that you create.
I bring this up because there is a flawed idea out there in the artistic community, a crazy thought that we have to always be creating or always be making in order to be a true artist. I don’t know where the idea came from but it truly is insane to think that we have to be “on” all the time. So, with the holidays coming up we all probably need to be able to take a guilt-free break for the sake of your sanity. I want to share what I’ve learned about this issue in hopes that it will help you have a better perspective.

https://Art2Life.com - I recently returned from teaching a workshop at an extraordinary boutique retreat center on the outskirts of Marrakech. It is called Jnane Tamsna. Experiencing this place reminds me of 2 core ideas I teach artists to help make their art and, frankly, their life stronger: #1 Surround yourself with what brings you alive. #2 Never stop believing that whatever you can dream, more than likely, is possible.
How can a particular place do this? How is it possible that experiencing the new feelings, colors and scents of this place inspire? How can the creative vision of one inspire so many?
Today I am in conversation with the visionary designer and hotelier Meryanne Loum Martin. She has redefined luxury not in the usual financial way but in terms of exactly what money can't buy: Soul. She overcame and ignored prevalent racial and sexual prejudices and created Morocco's first lifestyle brand hotel. Today Meryanne and the places she creates are legendary. Icons of fashion, and design, as well as celebrities of film, dance. and music, all come to experience her contemporary, gorgeous lifestyle aesthetic. Her refined design sense, philosophy, and deep respect for Moroccan culture are all intertwined in a cosmopolitan approach to living and art now known worldwide as simply "Moroccan Style."
Join Meryanne and me for this conversation about differences, mindset, and soulful opulence. We sit together amongst Moroccan antiquities, contemporary art and fresh-cut roses at her Moroccan destination, Jnane Tamsna.

https://Art2Life.com - I believe that art making is about choices — choosing what you want to keep in an d what you want to get rid of. What’s crazy, is that when you’re starting out on the creative path, those choices seem important and can be scary. There’s a lot of thought that goes into it because you don’t want to mess up.
But what I’ve discovered is that as you get on down the creative path a bit more, a realization comes to you: To get somewhere artistically, it doesn’t matter so much what you choose when it comes to colors or shapes and such. The more important thing is to simply make a choice. That’s a different way of approaching art.
It makes it a lot easier.

https://Art2Life.com - About ten years ago, I went to Mallorca, Spain, to teach a workshop. It seemed a long way to go, but what I found once I arrived made the journey worth it. I held the workshop in a gorgeous stone villa. There were old olive trees and the nights were so warm, starry, and still. Participants could drop into this place quickly. They felt more inspired as soon as they arrived. However, what stirred me that first time, more than anything, was a massage I signed up for on a whim. It turned out it was not so much a massage, but a reading. A spiritual directional clarification. It was like a mirror that made it possible to see more clearly the deeper parts of myself.
Meet Magdalena Segui Cerda. I have returned to Mallorca for over ten years to teach workshops and equally important, to work with Magdalena. She has an extraordinary, gentle way of helping others see and decipher their most genuine essence. I consider my work over the years with her as art and life guidance. Our best art comes when we look within ourselves and begin listening. There is wise guidance waiting within us all. Our souls already have the answers we seek. However, it is so easy to miss what is right before us. Magdalena has helped me see what I have overlooked. Join us for this conversation about the creative project we all share: The Project of Becoming.

https://Art2Life.com - Authenticity is often present in strong, moving art. This ingredient is a given. But sometimes art can be even more significant in feel. It can be universal. I can’t always put my finger on how this occurs, but I can recognize it. The work feels bigger. It references far more than what is contained within its borders.
Oregon-based artist Vanessa Marsh makes this kind of work. Her art is similar to photography, but on closer examination, it is not. Vanessa constructs much of her work using darkroom techniques, collage, drawing, and painting. Her varied images of landscapes, trees, and night constellations seem familiar, like a collective shared memory. They have a specificity but also remarkably a universality. Her work is beautifully varied, but all of it shares a common subject matter: light itself. Join us for this expansive conversation about constellations, human connection, and the nature of light.

https://Art2Life.com - Making art is hard enough, but hearing from others whether it is good or not is especially so.
Join me now for this startlingly vulnerable and caring conversation about art and life with one of the most revered voices in the art world: Jerry Saltz.

https://Art2Life.com - At the beginning of making something, the artist is the fixed, central point that everything is organized around. It seems it can't be any other way. You are a singular artist doing something, chasing something to make something new. Often it falls flat but sometimes, a few sneak through. A couple of them are good. Maybe even for a short time, great.
Interestingly, good art always seems to have a bit more authenticity. It's yours, but also theirs as well. In other words, the authenticity of the human experience seems to be the currency we all embrace. We all can relate to it. As the artist, we begin thinking the work is all about us. How could it be otherwise? Yet somehow, in the process of making, sharing, and showing our work, it becomes clear that others can find themselves in our art too. It no longer becomes solely about you. It is out of your hands and goes off into the world without even looking back.
Of course, this is rarely the case for most art made. First, it has to be exceptionally authentic. It has to be poignant and stirring. It has to be unforgettable. Edward Povey, a British painter whose work can loosely be described as emotional realism, happens to be all three. Join me now for an incredibly candid, moving, and thoughtful conversation. Hopefully, it will be for you what it was for me: Unforgettable.
