442: Why Design React Mode is Shrinking your Business with Michael Bernard

Today we will be speaking with Michael Bernard AIA. He is the founder of Virtual Practice Consulting, where he provides strategic advice to design and construction firms.

He was a professor in the architecture department at The California College of the Arts in San Francisco for many years and previously served as a director on the board of the San Francisco chapter of the AIA and on the board of the AIA California Council. He’s led several committees and served as Architect Advisor to the academy for emerging professionals at the AIA San Francisco.

Michael’s Origin Story

Michael discovered architecture as a 10 year old when he was inspired by house plan magazines at the supermarket and built 3D models as a child. In college, he studied psychology with the intent of becoming a clinical psychologist. While he was teaching French to exchange students during summer school, a colleague noticed him sketching and asked if he’d ever thought of architecture as a profession.

Michael started in design and worked for Charles Moore in Los Angeles. After some time, he went to work for a larger technical firm because he wanted to learn what the underpinning was of design. Over the course of his career, he always wanted more. He finally realized that what he loved most about architecture is the creative team that makes a project happen.

441: Working Successfully with Developers with Harshad Pillai

Today I will be speaking with Harshad Pillai who is the Director of Fogarty Finger, an architecture firm committed to redefining the urban built environment through projects that are as evocative as they are pragmatic.

Harshad is currently overseeing the development of over 3 million square-feet of projects across various sectors of New York. Astoria West has more than 500 units soon to be available, as well as the Rise and NOVA in Long Island City. Previously overseeing a range of multifamily projects, Harshad is carrying his skills over to 141 Willoughby, the firm's first office building that is slated to complete this year.

Harshad completed the 160,000 square foot conversion of the former Shlitz brewery and bottling building in Brooklyn. His design, The Jackson, a 70,000 square foot residential building in Long Island City was awarded the Global Future Design Award in 2020.

This week I am speaking with Hiroshi Okamoto who is one of the co-founder of OLI Architecture.

Hiroshi Okamoto is a member of the AIA and has had an exciting architectural career path working at practices such the Ushida Findlay Partnership in Japan, and with the Joint Venture of Nikken Sekkei, Tohata Gumi and RTKL International, on Tokyo infrastructure projects and of course Hiroshi worked closely with the late I.M Pei in the twilight of his career, working on of the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha (2001–2008) as a contract administrator; and as the Project Architect of the Chapel at the Miho Institute of Aesthetics (2008-2012) in Shigaraki, Japan, I.M. Pei’s last project.

In 2010, Mr. Okamoto co-founded OLI Architecture PLLC and has been the design principal and project architect for the MuXin Art Museum (2011-2015), the Chengdu Silk Art Culture Museum (2012-2016), and the Museum of Islamic Art Renovation (2015-2017) in Doha, Qatar. (2017-2018) to name just a few and the firm has also won a number of prestigious awards and recognitions.

Walter Marin was born in Latin America but raised in the heart of New York.

Ever community-minded, Walter gives back by serving as the Vice Chair of The National Hispanic Business Group and the Bronx Community College Foundation Board.

Kenneth Lewis is a Managing Partner in SOM's New York studio office.

Kenneth knows New York's development world like the back of his hand, having managed some of the most complex building projects in the city's recent history.

In his 35 plus years in building in New York City and beyond. Ken's work includes One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, and its neighbor Seven World Trade Center; both built under extraordinary circumstances.

Ken led SOM's work at 35 Hudson Yards, an undulating residential tower and home to the first Equinox Hotel.

More recently, Ken led construction and development of Manhattan West, a 7 million square foot, mixed-use, master plan development built above active railroad tracks, encompassing four new towers and reuse of an existing loft building.

Today, Ken is leading the most significant renovation and reuse project in New York's history, the complete transformation and ground up renovation of the landmark Waldorf Astoria.

Ken is also the president of AIA in New York, charged with leading the organization with optimism and pride through this very difficult and challenging time for the AEC industry.

He also serves on the Urban Green Council Board of Directors, the Center for Architecture Board of Trustees, and the Architectural Review Board of Irvington, New York.

I’ll guess that your definition of success isn’t being financially stretched, burned out or unfulfilled.

Recently, I heard an interview with Oprah Winfrey where she said, “no one succeeds alone.”

And she repeated it twice. “No one succeeds alone.”

So however you define success, consider that you can’t have success alone - as an island.

What is the key to building a team of people around you - of team members, clients and associates?

Growing up in Los Angeles County, Joseph attended and received his Architecture degree from The University of Arizona School of Architecture, and got his architecture license in the State of California.

After interning with, then working for, several leading Southern California Architects of note, Joseph opened his own Architecture practice in the South Bay, specializing in custom residential and small commercial projects.

In addition to practicing architecture, Joseph is a managing member of several real estate holding companies and is one of the owners and partners of JAM Properties, which identifies and assembles real estate investment and development opportunities throughout Southern California.

In this episode, Joseph gives a little glimpse of how the firm operates, how they win work, how they mitigate risks from onboarding a client to the design process, and what, for him, makes for a successful team.

We also discuss the valuable skill of deep listening and how it's instrumental in bringing projects to life in a personal way, the company's vision and mission, and what's in store for Joseph and his team in 2022.

In 2017, Robin expanded her business with her Signature Home Furnishings Collections, including hardware, case goods, rugs, upholstery, and lighting, becoming a sought-after designer of licensed home furnishings collections.

Today, Robin Baron Design includes her full-service design firm, her Signature Collections, and a multi-channel e-commerce site that provides a unique opportunity for designers and consumers to shop curated products with direct access to Robin’s expert advice and design sensibility.

In this episode, Robin takes us through her journey from being a fashion designer to an interior designer to a product designer, what "performance" means for a business, and her underlying principles in being an effective marketer and communicator.

Robin also walks us through a little bit about the process from designing her products to getting them manufactured, how social media has been instrumental in connecting and nurturing a community for designers, and a very important advice for young Robin and designers looking to start their own design business.

This week, we have Bruce Haden, Co-Founder of Human Studio, a design and architecture firm based in Vancouver, Canada.

In his work as an architect, Bruce saw a problem. He found that he often lacked hard metrics and data to inform or at least justify design decisions. As a result, he found that clients ultimately and frequently based their decisions on more hard and measurable data like construction costs.

But how do we quantify or calculate the more intangible elements of design? More importantly, how do we justify these costs or expenditures to these clients who are, ultimately, footing the bill?

As a result of his inquiry, Haden developed and spearheaded the design software application called FLUID Sociability that measures the sociability of buildings and spaces.

Ultimately, this is a story that lies at the heart of what it means here at the Business of Architecture.

Business of Architecture is simply this: When you have an important message and a mission, when you have value to give to the world, how do you get the opportunity tome that impact?

How do take an idea and vet that idea? How do you then find the funding or the ability or the resources to bring that idea to the world? And how do you then make it visible and help it have an impact?

Erin has also taught and coached in architecture and design fields at universities including Harvard, Cornell, Parsons, The City University of New York and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Mike is a third-generation contracting professional, skilled carpenter, and effective leader with a thorough understanding of the process required to bring a highly detailed project from concept to successful completion.

He also sits on the Board of St. Ignatius School, a middle school dedicated to providing quality education to children in the South Bronx. A native of Long Island, Mike graduated from Providence College, where he double-majored in Mathematics and Quantitative Economics. He currently resides in Brooklyn with his family.

This week, I’m speaking with the Co-Founder of Studio Banana, Key Kawamura.

Studio Banana founders Key Kawamura and Ali Ganjavian met and became fast friends while attending the University of East London for their architecture degrees.

Not quite fitting into the places they were working in, they decided to start their own architecture and product design firm, Studio Banana in 2007, further expanding into a wide breadth of creative projects and developing a rich repertoire of entrepreneurial projects in the fields of transdisciplinary creativity, communication, design-led innovation, and education. Studio Banana is responsible for the globally acclaimed OSTRICHPILLOW® and involved in high-yield, high-impact innovative projects for clients such as United Nations, Nestlé, Coca-Cola, Al Jazeera, Ernst & Young, Qatar Foundation, BBDO, McCann Erickson, Santander Bank, Vodafone or Telefonica, among others.

In 2019, they published "Work Out of the Box," a collection of conversations with industry leaders and case studies from their portfolio to break design-driven transformation down into 13 core principles as a sort of manifesto on how to design work environments and work cultures. In this episode, Key offers up a great vantage point into the philosophy of Studio Banana, the company culture, their business strategy, and deployment methodology. We also explore the perceived dichotomy between business and creativity, and how an understanding of the constraints and the tension between the two produces an environment where innovation can flourish.

386: Healthy Building Design with Tyrone Yang

This week, we're taking a human-centered approach to architecture discussions with Dr. Tyrone Yang.

Tyrone graduated with a Master's in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2002. He also has a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Virginia and a BA in Psychology from Cornell University.

Currently, he has recently founded Architectural Health and Yang Architects. Before doing that, he worked as a designer and project manager at Butz + Klug, RIZVI Architects, and also Moshe Safdie and Associates and worked on a large array of projects.

Tyrone's academic involvement includes classes in Psychology and Research Methods at the University of Virginia and classes in Human Factors and Sustainable Architecture at Wentworth Institute of Technology.

He's also worked as an affiliate researcher and course collaborator at the City Science / Changing Places Group at the MIT Media Lab. Currently, he's teaching Environmental Design Research at the Department of Architecture at Roger Williams University.

Tyrone is both a licensed architect and a member of the AIA and the Boston Society of Architects, where he has co-chaired the Small Practices Network.

In this conversation, we discuss the overlaps and how Dr. Yang's research into cognitive psychology has underpinned his architectural approach, how that has manifested in his current entrepreneurship ventures and business ventures, and how positioned himself as one of the world's leading, healthy building design consultants.

She has also recently formed a non-profit design firm, A Complete Unknown, in her home in Washington DC. The A Complete Unknown design firm has a mission to promote social justice, peace, and unity through architecture and design.

Suman has over 30 years of building a successful architecture practice. Some of her notable projects include John and Jill Ker Conway Residence for formerly homeless veterans and the Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Center in Fort Washington.

In this episode, Suman explains and discusses her career, how she founded Sorg Architects and how she transitioned from that practice into creating A Complete Unknown, and the intentions behind doing that. She summarizes her philosophy and goes into a lot of depth into her experience and overview in her career and how to run a profitable and successful architecture firm.

384: Building a Construction Business with Michael Grosswendt

This week, I'm speaking to Mike Grosswendt who is the CEO and Founder of All Coast Construction, a construction company based on the west coast of the US.

Mike focuses his attention onto new construction and restorations. He's worked with many world-renowned architects. He's worked with an incredible array of A-list celebrities as well including Quincy Jones. He's recently completed the home of Robert Downey Junior and his wife Susan, which is based in Malibu; quite an incredible and unusual architectural feat. He's currently working on a remodel of a 27,000 sq ft home for Charles Gwathmey, again, in Malibu.

In this conversation, Mike and I talked about his beginnings, how he began as a carpenter, and how he won projects in the early days. We get a really good insight into the workings of a construction business, how a contractor views modern construction, what makes a good relationship between contractor and architect, and all the different nuances of making construction profitable, and the complexities of running a business.

383: Developing Long-Lasting Relationships with Mark Weaver and Darrell Wilson

This week, I'm speaking with Mark Weaver and Darrell Wilson of Mark Weaver Associates.

Mark Weaver Associates is a full-service design firm based in Los Angeles that was founded in 1970. Since then, they have built an impressive portfolio of work with residential installations, they worked on private aircraft, yachts, and even private island retreats in a vast array of locations from Los Angeles to New York City to London, and also in Italy.

Mark has been recognized by a breadth of national and international publications and has earned himself a loyal following of clients from around the world. He regularly lectures at UCLA and is a founding member of both the LA Museum of Contemporary Art and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art.

Darrell is the Principal Designer at Mark Weaver Associates, and they've been working together for the best part of 20 years. His approach to design has been shaped by a wide range of influences from mid-century Italian and French furniture to classical architecture. Darrell's perspective is from very much an architectural background.

In this episode, we discuss how Mark and Darrell create long-lasting client relationships that bring regular projects into their business and that last for decades. We also talk about how to navigate the time-based pricing versus value-based pricing conundrum that many architects and designers face in their businesses. We also look at how to responsibly manage your clients' money within a project.

His experience in working with some of the industry's most renowned firms and designers include SOM, Holabird & Root, and BluHomes, which led him to discover this void for a simple cloud-based project management application that was tailored to the architectural industry.

As such, Yuen co-founded Monograph alongside his co-founders Alex Dixon and Moe Amaya to help architects and engineers oversee projects in an integrated user-friendly and with an ever evolving interface.

This week, I'm speaking to Eric Clough who is the founder of Manhattan-based design firm 212box.

Eric was originally from the Midwest and spent his formative years in both Brussels and London. He graduated from Yale in 1999 and founded 212box in late 2000.

212box is actually made up of six companies, which are working in different disciplines and different sectors, and they have an incredible array of different projects.

They worked in retail with people like Christian Louboutin, Sergio Rossi, Lego, and Erdos / 1436, and enlisting clients such as the von Furstenberg family and Philip Roth for residential.

In this conversation, Eric goes into a lot of the philosophy and creativity, and how they merged that with the business aspects of 212box.

She actually holds a degree in Economics and she's not formally trained as an architect, so she brings a very deep insight and specialist way of looking at where the world of design and business intersect, which made this conversation deeply fascinating.

She's the past President of the South California Development Forum, she sits on the USC Architecture Guild Board, and she is currently part of the USC Economics Leadership Council.

Her role at CRTKL means that she represents the brand at a firm-wide level, and she's seeking to align their message and the message of the business with the marketing strategy, the business goals, and the opportunities for shared initiatives.

She's also responsible for the creation of strategic initiatives and bringing those objectives into a meaningful internal and external communications strategy.

This week, I am speaking with David Hacin who is the Founding Principal and Creative Director of Hacin + Associates, an interdisciplinary architecture design firm founded in Boston in 1993. They're currently a 30+person team dedicated to design excellence and client service. David has a plethora of recognition and awards for the studio's broad portfolio of architecture, interior design, graphics and branding.

David studied both at Princeton University and Harvard Graduate School of Design and has served on the Northeastern University School of Architecture Advisory Board and as a guest critic and lecturer at many design schools in the country.

He's also served nearly 20 years as the Mayoral appointee to the Boston Civic Design Commission and the City of Boston's Design Review Panel for public-significant works. In 2010, David was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

In this interview, we get to see some of the insights that David has accrued in his business experience, how he's cultivating culture, how he has never let go of a member of his staff or a member of his team, which was a testament to the deep culture that he has cultivated, and the human-centric philosophy that underpins much of the practice's work and culture.

Geoff is a real estate development executive who has interdisciplinary expertise. He has both been trained as an architect and has worked in several architectural offices in New York City, and then he transitioned into the ownership and development side where he has worked with some of the largest and most active New York City developers.

He's had projects come out of the ground in several US states and has repositioned assets in New York City of over $3 billion.

This was a really fascinating conversation to see behind the scenes of how developers with architects, how they approach and hire architects, what they're looking for, what makes a successful collaboration, mistakes architects often make when they're trying to find work with developers, and how developers can actually take advantage if they're not properly prepared.

We also speculate on the future of real estate in a post-covid world and the numerous business opportunities that may be presenting themselves to architects.

Duncan Jackson is an engineer and a furniture designer by training. He founded Billings Jackson Design in London in 1992 with Eoin Billings to bring industrial and product design expertise to the construction industry.

Eoin Billings, co-founder of Billings Jackson Design, is an industrial designer responsible for the firm’s work in Europe and the Middle East. He specializes in the design of urban elements, building component systems, and lighting products, working to improve the quality of environments at the human scale through thoughtful, functionally effective interventions.

Simon Kristak is the director of Billings Jackson’s New York office and is responsible for the day-to-day management of Billings Jackson’s project engagement across North America. His work mediates architecture and industrial design as a means to reconsider the built environment from the end user’s perspective.

Andre received his architectural training at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts and a degree in Architecture in 2012. He then went to the UK, working for David Chipperfield Architects in London. He then worked for SANAA in Tokyo and SO-IL in New York before co-founding his practice with Adam Charlap Hyman in 2015.

As a principal of Charlap Hyman & Herrero, Andre leads a multi-disciplinary practice based both in Los Angeles and New York. They work in various typologies - including buildings, products, set designs, stores, and interiors with the aim to create spaces that become worlds in and of themselves.

In 2018, Andre was ranked among Forbes Magazine's 30 under 30 in their Art and Style category, and in 2020, their firm won the AIA LA Emerging Practice Award.

In this conversation, Andre and I discuss how they have grown their practice, how they have gone to new sectors and opened new product lines, and how they are running a bicoastal firm.

Today kicks off Women’s History Month here in the United States. Today, I'm joined by three impactful and accomplished women who are making history in their own right here with us today.

Carrie Byles, Xuan Fu, and Laura Ettelman compose the executive committee of Skidmore, Ownings and Merrill, one of the world’s most highly respected and successful architecture firms, otherwise known as SOM.

SOM has completed some of the world’s most legendary buildings, in addition to a plethora of work that spans everything from airports to university campuses.

Notable buildings include the Willis Tower of Chicago (I prefer to use its former name “Sears Tower” for personal reasons) and the Burj Khalifa, currently the world’s tallest building.

Now before we jump into our interview today, here is a bit of background on today’s guests:

In addition to serving on the Executive Committee, Laura Ettelman is the managing partner in SOM’s New York Office and oversees the design and planning of a diverse range of projects across the globe. Her work ranges from large-scale master plans to interior design. Among the projects in her portfolio are some of the world’s largest aviation and transportation hubs, new hospitals and research centers for healthcare and science, and campus master planning and design for both higher education and the civic and government sectors.

Partner Carrie Byles is based in SOM’s San Francisco office. She has a strong background in information technology and how it shapes the way we live in and design our buildings.

Xuan Fu is a managing partner with SOM's Chicago office. In 1994, Fu started her SOM career as a technical coordinator before assuming the position of a project manager in 2004. As an expert in the Asian market, she has worked on a range of international projects including master plans, commercial buildings, mixed-use developments, retail, hospitality, and convention and exhibition center projects.

Today's guests are famed architect Lorcan O'Herlihy and renowend LA developer Richard Loring.

Richard Loring is the Director of Design + Construction for Domos. He's an award-winning developer with a long-standing history of working with many of the most forward-thinking architecture firms.

After receiving his masters in the History of English Architecture at Cambridge University, Loring founded Archetype, a general contracting company, where he built many noteworthy contemporary buildings for 26 years. Loring then served as Managing Director for Habitat Group Los Angeles, developing contemporary multifamily projects throughout the city. Many of Loring’s Habitat Group projects won AIA awards at the local, state and national level in addition to garnering coverage in leading architecture and design publications such as The New York Times, Dwell and Architectural Record.

Today, Loring is leading the latest Los Angeles Domos project in Hancock Park. In partnership with Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects, Domos plans to reconfigure the property to bring the building up to current city codes and invigorate the living spaces, while preserving the building’s classic exterior. These plans include the addition of at least three new floors to the building, including co-living suites.

Lorcan O'Herlihy FAIA is the founder and principal of LOHA (Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects) which seeks opportunities to engage the ever-changing complexities of the urban landscape while embracing architecture as a catalyst of change.

Since its inception in 1994, LOHA's urban and social concerns have been paired with an interest in artistry. Lorcan spent his formative years working in New York and Paris on the Grand Louvre Museum as a designer at I.M. Pei Partners. Lorcan has also worked as a painter, sculptor, and furniture maker. The methodologies of material exploration and formal inflection, derived from the looseness of abstract art have played a significant role across all media and are a critical driver of his architecture.

Lorcan’s professional practice has been accompanied by his academic and intellectual pursuits. He received a Master of Arts in History and Critical Thinking from the Architectural Association in London, writing a dissertation on social connectivity and generative urban strategies. He has taught and lectured extensively over the last decade, including at the Architectural Association in London, Southern California Institute of Architecture [SCI-Arc], Cranbrook Academy of Art, Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University, Pratt Institute, and the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern California.

In 2004 the Architectural League of New York selected Lorcan O'Herlihy as one of the eight “emerging voices” in the United States. In 2009, Lorcan was elevated to the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, an honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the profession. Lorcan’s commitment to design excellence in commercial, educational and residential projects has earned over 90 national and local design awards, including the AIA CC Distinguished Practice Award, AIA Los Angeles Firm of the Year Award, and in 2018 LOHA was awarded the status of #1 Design Firm in the US according to Architect Magazine's Architect 50.

Today's guest is architect Alyse Makarewicz.

“Be better today than I was yesterday.” Alyse Makarewicz applies this philosophy to her life as a mother, wife, architect, small business owner, and volunteer. She is the founder and president of AMB Architects, based in Houston, Texas. In this role, she ensures happy clients and successful outcomes on projects the firm undertakes and maintains a work culture that keeps employees fulfilled and energized.

AMB specializes in corporate, retail, and healthcare interiors and new construction, and provides landlord and facilities management services. Alyse’s goal with AMB, and what most sets it apart from other firms, is the firm’s employee-first culture. No more all-nighters and burning the candle at both ends; AMB’s staffing is organized to provide employees balance.

“Work-life balance is a huge focus here at AMB. People do their best work when they’re enjoying life, so everybody benefits.” This mentality leads to happy employees, enjoying their work, and giving it 100%, ultimately resulting in great projects and satisfied clients.

Abraham Lincoln is reported to have said, give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend four sharpening the ax. Alyse believes in this philosophy and as such has invested heavily in her own leadership and management skills.

She is a Certified DISC Consultant and Ziglar Legacy Certified Trainer. She uses these skills to train employees based on their strengths and personal development goals.

Alyse donates her time to the American Institute of Architects, BNI, her neighborhood HOA, and her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop, holding a variety of leadership roles in each. She holds personal time sacred and uses it to spend time with family, build massive Lego projects, crochet, read, and travel.

Matthew Gullo is a native Houstonian and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in architecture. After 14 years into an architecture career as a licensed architect he found himself as a principal of a multi-office Texas based firm with a need for a change.

In 2013, after being married for almost two years to his supportive and beautiful wife, his back felt like it was against the wall career wise. The market was on an uphill climb but the Houston office, of the firm he was with, was experiencing some light work loads. With the mood in the office waning, a strong desire to see what he could do on his own, and a lot of deep questions on his mind he started writing and publishing his thoughts on a blog called Smart Simple Life. He was exploring ideas, coaching, self development, business acumen, and alternatives to the traditional architecture career. To put it bluntly, Matthew was motivated to make a bigger change than just going to another firm and did not want to be dependent on someone else to bring work into office.

In December of 2013, he put in his notice to leave his principal position after having lunch with his great friend, Chris Grizzaffi, that was at the time and still is a part of Keller Williams. They talked about how the Smart Simple Life blog and how a lot of the things he was writing about paralleled Keller Williams teachings and philosophies.

With a cheat sheet to getting a real estate license that Chris gave him, Matthew devised a plan to become a licensed Real Estate agent in 14 days. Over the next 10 days he got up super early before work to study and complete all of the required courses, took a 2 day prep class, scheduled a test and passed.

The last few days of 2013, Matthew signed up with KW and took their extensive training called Ignite during the first week in January. With that training, the great people in my office, his coach Sheri Malone, Chris, the support of his wife and family he was able to sell 20 properties that first year for almost $4M in volume and was named the rising star in real estate.

In 2016 his wife was able to quit her job and began helping Matthew part-time. They also hired someone to help show properties so he could focus on growing the company.

Today, The Gullo Group is in the top 1% of Realtors in Houston, they have a full time operations manager, an agent that focuses on buyers, a marketing department, and several partners that help them get it all done.

Today, I speak with Iben Falconer. Iben Falconer is the former Business Development Director of the Americas for BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group. Iben joined BIG's NYC office in 2010.

During her tenure, the NYC office grew from 13 to 200 employees, and greatly expanded its market reach, winning its first North American cultural and institutional projects. In addition to being involved with the company's business development strategy and leading its implementation, she was also a member of the executive management team.

Prior to BIG, Iben worked for Steven Holl Architects, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Urban Land Institute.

More recently, she was a Director at Gehl, and before that, the Director of Strategic Initiatives at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

I'm excited to have Iben on with us today to talk about BIG's explosive growth during it's early years in the United States.

Today's guest should need no introduction, but you may not have heard of him because the firm he led as CEO from 2003 to 2017, one of the largest and most successful architecture firms in the world, doesn't revolve around the fame of one individual.

Our guest is Patrick MacLeamy, former CEO of the firm HOK. MacLeamy just released a book on his experience in leadership and business through his time at HOK titled: Designing a World-Class Architecture Firm: The People, Stories and Strategies Behind HOK. MacLeamy is also the Chairman of buildingSMART International, which works to achieve open standards for the exchange of digital information in the building and infrastructure industries. He was a founding member of buildingSMART, in 1994.

He spent 50 years at HOK, which grew into one of the largest architecture and engineering firms in the world during his time there. MacLeamy rose from Junior Designer to CEO of HOK and witnessed the firm’s growth from a single midwestern office to 27 locations across the globe offering architecture, interiors, engineering, planning and more.

MacLeamy joined HOK St. Louis in 1967, after which he helped establish the firm’s San Francisco outpost in 1970 - later becoming managing principal of that office. He joined HOK’s executive committee in 1995 and was named COO five years later. In 2003, HOK shareholders elected MacLeamy Chief Executive Officer.

He led the firm for 13 years. In 2016, MacLeamy chose a new CEO for HOK, remaining as Chairman for one more year before retiring —or as he likes to say, “repurposing.”

In this episode of Business of Architecture, MacLeamy shares hard-learned business lessons from his time at HOK and the principles that led this company to be the success that it is today.

326: Lessons in Leadership and Legacy with Eugene Kohn

Today we have the privilege of hearing from one of the icons of architecture - the man who co-founded one of the largest architecture firms in the world, Kohn Pedersen Fox or KPF.

Now In its 46th year, KPF spans the world with offices in 8 countries and with projects in more than 40. KPF founder Gene Kohn has, with his two partners, built an architecture business that flourishes because when it comes to good business he practices what he preaches.

Gene just released a book chronicling the challenges and successes of building this incredibly successful firm: The World by Design: The Story of a Global Architecture Firm.

What are his secrets for success?

On this episode you'll discover that KPF is set up and operates as the antithesis of the starchitect syndrome, the firm is not built around the personality or designs of an individual.

From the outset KPF was designed as a firm that would carry on after Gene and the other founders retired or passed away. This strategy different from many other prominent firms where the reputation of individual designers emphasized. Instead, KPF developed and lives by a culture of teamwork, rather than one of star designers.

Gene believes in discovering the most talented recent graduates, training them in all aspects of the profession and then elevating them to leadership positions. This approach has worked and KPF now has 31 principals – and a president - who rose from the ranks. Today KPF employs more than 650 people with offices in New York, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, Abu Dhabi and Singapore

The KPF team has been hugely successful with major buildings all over the world. Of the world’s 12 tallest buildings, 6 of them were designed by KPF – the Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen, the Lotte World Tower in Seoul, the CTF Finance Center in Guangzhou, the CITIC Tower (also known as China Zun) in Beijing and the Shanghai World Financial Center. These bona fides in global markets have positioned KPF to be named the architects for one of its newest projects One Vanderbilt, the 1401-foot-high-tower across Vanderbilt Avenue from Grand Central terminal that, with its observation deck and office floors, will make it higher than the neighboring Empire State building.

Gene turned what was initially a NY-based firm into a global powerhouse. This expansion strategy has allowed the firm to ride out major recessions in the U.S. by doing work abroad. It has also given the firm the chance to develop expertise in designing large complicated projects – first in Asia and now in the U.S. For example, the firm designed the JR Central Towers atop an active rail yard in Nagoya, Japan in the 1990’s, and then used that experience to work on Hudson Yards in NY.

Now you man be wondering - what does the story of one of the worlds largest firm's have to do with my success as a practitioner in a small firm?

Listen closely, because the strategies that Eugene Kohn used to grow his practice are the same you can use in your firm to build a firm to suit your life.

Many architects think of business as a dirty word. Gene however has emphasized the need for architects to solve their clients’ problems on time and on budget, without compromising design integrity.

He and his partners have made a practice of developing strong connections between the architectural profession and the business world.

Let's face it - right now we're facing some unprecedented circumstances.

Schools are shutting down, gatherings are cancelled - there's no question that this will have a real economic impact for many of us.

So what should we do? How will this impact architects and the architecture industry?

With all that's going on, it's far too easy to slip into worry, anxiety and fear. I'm struggling with this myself.

We moved into a new house last year and with six kids, a business and team members, I have some decent monthly expenses.

It's too easy to worry about what might happen - this does no good at all.

When we're fearful, that's when we retreat and stop taking positive actions.

What I'd remind you today is that it isn't the circumstances or the challenges that define us - it's how we respond to these challenges.

Let me repeat that: it isn't the circumstances or the challenges that define us - it's how we respond to these challenges.

No one individual has control over what is happening right now.

The only thing within our control is how we respond. Are you with me?

So, how do we respond? How do we move ahead with the best foot forward? How do we make sure that the best version of "US" continues to show up every day?

Today I want to give you 5 strategies for moving ahead with power and faith.

Realize that you're ok.
Avoid the virus of the mind.
Reframe this opportunity.
Analyze your routine.
Get cash / financing heavy.

You got this. You've been through challenges before and you'll make it through this one stronger than ever before.

A last tip is to look at alternate ways of packaging your services as an architect. There are some very cool things you can do to deal with times like this and still stay profitable and moving ahead.

This week you'll hear as Rion Willard, director of our London-based office, responds to a recent micro poll, which he conducted on social media that asked architects what they thought the biggest challenge facing the industry is. The results came in showing that the ‘Low fees’ were considered the biggest challenge followed by climate change, with many commenting that our ability to influence climate change is related to our ability to produce revenue.

What would happen if an anthropologist studied architects, specifically how architects engage with clients at the beginning stage of a project, the client acquisition stage?

An anthropologist is a person who studies humans, specifically the social interactions and behaviors of humans, just in case you need a reminder, like I did.

Darby Morris is an anthropologist. For her PhD dissertation she observed 3 architecture firms over the course of one year.

She sat in the offices of these firms observing how they engaged with their clients, primarily during the time commonly known as "pre-design" which includes marketing and business development.

In her own words, "Architects, despite being known for being egotistical, are not loud enough about who they are because they often don't know who they are (and are not). Even if they did know who they are, how, in a field where advertising was banned for 70 years, do they get the word out to the larger public? Once hired, architects are consistently designing for clients who don't seem to understand exactly what their needs are for the project at hand. How do they get around this?"
