I find myself drawn to the more social side of history than dates or battles. While I do think dates and battles are important, I find questions like ‘When did Catherine of Aragon realize she’d lost Henry VIII’s love to Anne Boleyn?’ or ‘Just what exactly was Aaron Burr’s deal?’ to be what really fascinates me about history. This is the lens that I view history from on the Door Key Podcast (and the accompanying Substack newsletter) because I’m a dork with a deep love of history who wants to talk about it.

As their supplies dwindled, they were forced to make desperate choices to survive, including cannibalism. Only a fraction of the group would survive.

This first episode of 2024’s Spooktacular explores the history of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas, established in 1607. The settlers faced a series of catastrophic challenges: a severe drought, poor relations with the indigenous tribes of the surrounding area, and not enough food. These challenges would lead to a year infamously known as ‘The Starving Time’. This episode gets into some real historical horror!

Zheng Yi Sao lived in China during the late 1700s and early 1800s, and from humble beginnings ended up becoming not only history's most successful female pirate, but one of the most successful pirates in history, period. Zheng Yi Sao is the epitome of the phrase ‘Well-behaved women seldom make history’, and her story is fascinating!

During the episode about Rasputin, I promised to tell the story of what happened to the Romanovs after the death of Rasputin - this episode makes good on that promise!
What would happen next would not be good: Russia’s Prime Minister would step down, and Tsar Nicholas II would be forced to abdicate his throne, and a Provisional Government would be formed.
Ultimately, the Romanovs would end up under house arrest at a home that would come to be called ‘The House of Special Purpose’ … this episode gets into all of that, and discusses the mystery of what happened to the youngest Romanov daughter Anastasia.

June is Pride Month, and Door Key is celebrating that by talking about The Stonewall Uprising today!
The Stonewall Uprising was a series of protests by members of the LGBTQ+ community. These protests were in response to a police raid of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York that started on June 28, 1969.
These protests did get violent, but they were the event that led to the rise of the push for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, and recognition of those rights.
The Stonewall Uprising inspired the Gay Pride movement, and is a big part of why we celebrate Pride Month every June!

In November of 1924, a group of people went out on William Randolph Heart's yacht which was named The Oneida to celebrate film producer Thomas Ince's birthday.
The weekend ended with Thomas Ince's death.
It's unclear what happened on the yacht that weekend to cause Thomas Ince's death, but I'm talking about it in this episode, in what I've dubbed 'The Oneida Incident'.

This episode explores the history of the ancient Roman city Pompeii, and gives examples of the (sometimes bawdy) graffiti found scrawled on the walls of the city when it was dug up centuries after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.
(A bit of a content warning here, as some of the graffiti is spicy!)

Baron von Steuben was a Prussian Baron who came to the US to help train the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
He was smart. He was brave. He was charismatic. He was so instrumental in helping the Continental Army win the Revolutionary War that there's a statue of him in Lafayette Square in Washington, DC. He was also openly gay in the 1700s.
