The Original New Timbral Orchestra (TONTO) is the first and largest multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer, capable of producing many tone colours with different voices simultaneously.
Beginning with a single Moog Series III Modular in 1968, creators Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff continued to expand TONTO with modules from different manufacturers, along with custom additions designed by Cecil. It marked the first attempt at creating a universal language for different synthesizers to communicate with each other, which was revolutionary. Under the name Tonto’s Expanding Head Band, Cecil and Margouleff released the highly influential album Zero Time. The album demonstrated the rich, layered sounds of the massive synth, attracting significant attention and major collaborations.
TONTO can be heard on many Stevie Wonder classics, including “Superstition," “Living for the City” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” as well as hits by the Isley Brothers, Minnie Riperton, Joan Baez, the Doobie Brothers, Quincy Jones, Randy Newman and others.
Jason Tawkin leads us through the incredible story of how this massive instrument came to be donated to the National Music Centre in Calgary, Canada, and its renovation, enabling TONTO’s full capabilities to be used by musicians from around the world once again…

Today’s guest is Paul Humphreys, keyboard player and singer in the much loved Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. OMD’s origination in Liverpool parallels the Human League’s in many ways – both started in 1978, both were self-taught, both had an early love of synthesisers, and both had a burning ambition to combine pop with art and futurism. Paul’s ex-partner Claudia Brucken is also one of Martyn’s best friends, and their band OneTwo was also very popular for over a decade. Paul is regularly likened to the ‘heart’ of OMD, and his talent shines through in everything he does.
Ladies and gentlemen – pop royalty, Paul Humphreys...

Today’s episode features Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers, the remaining two members of the legendary Belgian synthpop band Telex. They were formed in 1978 with the intention of "making something really European, different from rock, without guitar — and the idea was electronic music".
Telex mixed the aesthetics of disco, punk and experimental electronic music, and their classic hit Moskow Diskow is on every electronic music DJ playlist. They also represented Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest, hoping to finish last, which they nearly achieved. Their legacy of elegant and witty electropop is widely admired. They are currently working with Mute Records to rerelease their back catalogue to inspire a new generation of producers and pop songwriters.
Ladies and gentlemen, pay respect to the great Belgian innovators, Telex...

Will is best known as the lead keyboardist, producer and composer of the electronic music duo Goldfrapp, having started his illustrious career performing and recording with Tears For Fears, Peter Gabriel, The Cure and Portishead.

They also regularly work together on Will’s project The Moog Ensemble, with which Martyn has performed.
Two great friends who are amongst the most innovative figures in the UK music in the last 30 years… Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for Will Gregory and Adrian Utley...
Tomorrow’s episode features Sananda Maitreya and is somewhat of a scoop. I produced his first album ‘The Hardline According To…’ in the late 80’s, and his impact was shockingly huge and immediate. He sang like a soul angel, he moved like a combination of James Brown and Otis Redding, and his charisma was off the scale. But most importantly, his supreme songwriting and performance talent was undeniable. He sold 14million albums and conquered the world… and then…
This is my first in depth discussion with him for 30 years – we hadn’t spoken at all during that time except the occasional letter. Our reconnection and love for each other was immediate and heartwarming. We had so much to talk about that we decided this should be spread over two episodes.
Ladies and gentlemen, buckle up – it’s the magnificent artist now known as Sananda Maitreya…
Jo Callis and Martyn have been friends since 1979 when The Human Leagues supported the Rezillos on their first major London date. Jo is a very talented songwriter and performer, whose influence on the major hits on Dare and other albums is underestimated. His ability to tap into the publics pop sensibility is impressive, and his good humour and intelligence makes him a natural collaborator.
Ladies and gentlemen - I present to you the rare talent that is Jo Callis...
Peter Hook is a very talented friend. We are the same age, and our cultural references are almost identical, both being proud northerners. Peter’s fantastic work as part of Joy Division and then New Order is well known, and he now tours the world as Peter Hook and The Light. His storytelling is legendary, and his spirit of daring and empathetic collaboration is clear in everything he does. He has appeared on my BEF love shows, and he is always memorable (and usually hilarious).
Ladies and gentlemen – the world would be a duller place without him – I give you the force of nature that is Hooky…
My good friend Sarah Jane Morris is a singer with an astonishing vocal range. She is probably best known for her stellar recordings with Jimi Somerville in The Communards, but her 40-year career is so much more diverse than that…
Over the decades she has developed a loyal and loving international audience (particularly in Italy), and her rich contralto voice goes from strength to strength. She has performed with a diverse range of groups, from rock to soul to African blues, with classical orchestras, a one-hundred cello ensemble, with acoustic guitars and jazz big bands. Her voice, her versatility, and her emotional intelligence - the absolute authenticity of feeling which she conveys - make her a world-class, treasured and highly compelling performer.
Her guest appearances on various live and recorded BEF projects have been exceptional, and Martyn produced her 1992 album Heaven. She is a committed socialist and activist, and, like Martyn, was a member of Red Wedge supporting the Labour Party in the mid 80’s
Ladies and Gentlemen – I give you great Sarah Jane Morris…
Chic, Sister Sledge, Madonna, David Bowie, Debbie Harry, Sheila B Devotion, Peter Gabriel, Mick Jagger, Sheena Easton, Diana Ross, B-52’s, Duran Duran, Pharell Williams, Christina Aguilera, George Michael, etc.etc.etc…. the list goes on and on. He has been an inspiration for generations of songwriters and producers. Tell me someone who doesn’t like Chic – come at me…
Nile Rodgers has written, produced, and performed on albums that have sold more than 500 million units and 75 million singles worldwide. He is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a three-time Grammy Award-winner, and the chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame., Rolling Stone wrote in 2014 that "the full scope of Nile Rodgers' career is still hard to fathom".
And Nile’s talent matches his personality – outgoing and exceptional. He’s a humanitarian, one of the good guys, and his creativity, bravery and positivity are shining examples for us all to follow. I have no more words – just listen to THE MAN…
Ladies and gentlemen – one of the main inspirations for Heaven 17, and the true definition of a living legend – Nile Rodgers…
Martyn has known Arthur Baker for many years, sometimes competing for similar productions but always remaining good friends. He is an American record producer and DJ best known for his work with hip hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Planet Patrol, and his work with New Order. His love of dance music and his creativity merged to form the ‘Arthur Baker’ sound – the origins of which heavily featured Roland drum machines and rhythms influenced by early electronic music pioneers like Kraftwerk. He is a very important figure in the development of hip-hop and mainstream dance music, and he’s a fascinating character.
Ladies and gentlemen – I give you Arthur Baker…
It’s hard to describe how much respect I have for Daniel Miller. As a creator and music producer - from the early days of The Normal (Warm Leatherette, TVOD), Silicon Teens, to Duet Emmo and Sunroof, to his foundation of Mute Records, and his boundless support for young electronic artists, he is without doubt one of the music industry’s good guys, without whom many artists would never have flourished. For instance, to this day, Mute and Erasure conduct their business on a level of trust unheard of – no written contract, 50/50 split after costs. What a great man… and what an enormous range of talented artists Mute has supported - Erasure, Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, Fad Gadget, A Certain Ration, and his love of Techno music. He is also a DJ, a performer and above all a maestro of the synthesiser – ladies and gentlemen…
the one and only Daniel Miller
Rusty is a constant thread throughout the history of electronic music in the UK. Since the early days with the Rich Kids, and then Visage, his drive, invention and talent has helped to create a template for glamorous synthesised pop music. He also established the importance of the DJ tastemaker influence on the ‘scene’ at the famous Blitz club. Just as important, he has always been at the beating heart of music business interaction throughout his career, connecting people with his relentless bonhomie. And man, can he talk...
Ladies and gentlemen, the one, the only, the lovable Rusty Egan...
Of all the people I wanted to interview for this podcast, Tony Visconti was my number one choice. He has produced 12 of my top 20 all-time favourite albums, and he is simply one of the greatest producers of all time.
Bowie, Bolan, Sparks, Paul McCartney, The Move, Iggy Pop, Kaiser Chiefs, Thin Lizzy, Holy Holy, Morrissey, Prefab Sprout, Angelique Kidjo... the list goes on and on...
Then there’s the albums...
Young Americans, Diamond Dogs, Electric Warrior, Low, Heroes, Blackstar, The Idiot, Lodger, Scary Monsters etc etc
The man is a stone-cold, one of a kind, musical hero - my career would probably never have happened without his music.
Ladies and Gentlemen, kneel and pay homage to Anthony Visconti... there can be only one...
Morris Hayes is the much-respected musical director of New Power Generation and the trusted right hand man of Prince’s band for nearly 20 years (Prince called him 'Mr. Hayes'). He is also working with Prince’s estate and his huge vault of legacy recordings, including the recently announced, previously unheard brand-new Prince album ‘Welcome 2 America’. His stories and insights into the Paisley Park universe and many tours and albums are fascinating, as is his love of all things technological, which he and Martyn definitely share in common…

Neil Arthur and Martyn have known each other since they worked together on Blancmange’s first demos. They immediately became firm friends, and their mutual love of football and the north remains strong.
In the 80’s, Blancmange blasted out a string of top 20 electronic pop classics like Living On The Ceiling and Blind Vision, and three classic albums, and Neil has continued in the last decade with further excellent releases and collaborations. The new Blancmange have supported Heaven 17 on two UK tours recently, and Neil regularly collaborates with new bands
Ladies and gentlemen, he’s up the wall, he’s up the bloody tree...
Neil Arthur
Chris Watson – what a dude…
Part of the original lineup of the truly legendary Cabaret Voltaire (and a major influence on the early Human League during their time together in Sheffield), his destiny was always connected to his love of sound recording. He has a particular and passionate interest in recording the wildlife sounds of animals and habitats from around the world. As a freelance composer and sound recordist Chris also specialises in creating spatial sound installations which feature a strong sense and spirit of place.
His television work includes many programmes in the David Attenborough ‘Life’ series including ‘The Life of Birds’ which won a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Factual Sound’ in 1996, and as the location sound recordist for the BBC series ‘Frozen Planet’ which also won a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Factual Sound’ (2012).
He probably possesses the world’s largest library of natural world recordings, often captured using devices he himself has created. He also lectures around the world, and he and Martyn have collaborated on various projects over the years, including the astounding Sound Oasis project in the centre of Mexico City, and Martyn’s Future of Sound tour featuring Illustrious’s unique Immersive three-dimensional sound system.
Ladies and Gentlemen – prepare to be fascinated… there can be only one Chris Watson
Stephen Mallinder (AKA Mal from the Cabs in my memory) is a multifaceted artist and musician who was a founding member of the most seminal pre and post punk band Cabaret Voltaire, who went on to work as Sassi & Loco, the Ku-Ling Bros., Hey! Rube, Wrangler and Creep Show. He is also one of Martyn’s oldest and best friends, without whose support, mentorship and inspiration, the nascent Human League would never have developed fully. He has produced in excess of 30 albums, and he is also a well-known remixer and live performer. He is also a respected academic, having published numerous academic papers, and has a PhD in Music. He is super-smart, authentic and funny, in fact everything you’d wish from a true renaissance man…
Ladies and gentleman… I give you a true original – Stephen Mallinder
Richard "Kid" Strange is an English writer, actor, musician, curator, teacher, adventurer and the founder and front man of seminal mid-1970s protopunk art rock band Doctors of Madness. Martyn has been a fan of his since the Doctors first album release, and their paths only recently crossed once more when Richard and he became lecturers at Tileyard Education in London. Richard is a fine and innovative songwriter, and has just released a single remixed by Martyn called ‘Walk Of Shame’. Let’s face it, anyone who has maintained a career in music and showbusiness for over 40 years deserves a huge amount of credit…
Ladies and gentlemen – Kid Strange…
John Foxx aka Dennis Leigh is the quietly powerful and enigmatic maker of futurist electro pop and composer of elegant soundscapes. Martyn met him and became friends whilst recording in his studio The Garden 40 years ago, and his work has remained massively influential since then, featuring an ever changing series of reinventions. His commitment to innovation and education is a powerful one. And he’s a fellow Northerner! Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be fascinated...
Roisin Murphy is without doubt a force of nature. After her rise to stellar fame with the band Moloko, and the club classic ‘Sing It Back’, she has matured into a unique musical visionary. Born in Ireland, moved to Manchester and settled in Sheffield, she has gone on to create some of the most intelligent and futuristic electronic pop music in the last 2 decades. Apart from being massively respected in the music community for her daring and originality, her new album ‘Roisin Machine’ is a total, unequivocal triumph, and is top of my playlists currently.
Give it up for the machine herself…
Gary Numan is a fascinating and surprisingly affable guy – he’s a singer, a songwriter, a composer and producer, and one of the great electronic pop pioneers. Tubeway Army started as a punk band and, under his Gary Numan persona, quickly metamorphosed into the most popular electronic futurist band of the early 80’s. He is creatively driven, a true artist who clearly doesn’t flinch from controversy, and he has a unique vision which explains his enormous and loyal fanbase. He has sold over 10 million records, and that is no joke. He also loves aircraft and aviation – wait for the story at the end of the podcast – jaw dropping…
Ladies and gentlemen – It’s cold outside…it’s Gary Numan!
Thomas Dolby is a very interesting and surprisingly humble renaissance man and polymath. He has always combined a fascination with the future as a kind of geeky avatar, with a playful and highly commercial musical approach. Perhaps best known for blinding us with science, Thomas Dolby has always blurred the lines between composition and invention. As a London teenager, Tom Robertson was fascinated with the convergence of music and technology. His experiments with an assortment of keyboards, synthesizers and cassette players led his friends to dub him “Dolby.” That same fascination later drove him to become an electronic musician and multimedia artist whose groundbreaking work fused music with computer technology and video. Two decades, several film scores, five Grammy nominations and countless live-layered sound loops later, it's clear Dolby's innovations have changed the sound of popular music.
That’s Thomas – smart cookie…
Martin grew up through the formative late 70’s in Sheffield with Martyn – hanging out at the same pubs, writing fanzines while he was studying at Sheffield University. Influenced by both the early Human League and Cabaret Voltaire initially, he became the singer of Vice Versa, and early electropop act, which soon evolved into that rarest of creatures – a fully realised, truly popular modern pop creation – ABC. With the help of Trevor Horn, they created indisputably one of the greatest debut albums of the 80’s, possibly all-time. Martin has remained as creative and stylish as ever to this day, and, performing live, has continued to thrill audiences all over the world.
Ladies and gentlemen – the King of Cool, Martin Fry…
Gerry Casale is a genius. There, I’ve said it. I became a close friend with him when we first met in 1981 when his US management company (DEVO, Neil Young, The Residents, etc.) took on Heaven 17. His friendly and iconoclastic personality has always been a major inspiration for me and many musicians I know. His integrated artistic and philosophical approach is worthy of much more credit than merely his appearance as a rock star. He is a true renaissance man, with a beautiful, humanistic core.
Gerry's music career spans more than 40 years. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as co-founder and bass player of the new wave concept band Devo, which became massively popular worldwide in the late 70’s and 80’s. Casale is the main lyricist and one of the main composers of Devo's music and directed most of Devo's music videos. He is one of only two members (along with lead singer and keyboardist Mothersbaugh) who have been with Devo throughout its entire history.
Enjoy this illuminating conversation. We are all Devo!
Midge Ure is an internationally famous multi-dimensional being – singer, songwriter, producer, musical director, performer, composer, writer, podcaster, lover of technology, synthesist, guitarist par excellence. He’s also one of the most lovely people on the planet – a good friend, a family man, and a man of generous wisdom. His work ethic is second to none, and his love of his music and performing shines through everything he does. Martyn and Midge became friends in the early 80’s when their paths often crossed on TV shows, but their biggest collaboration was on Band Aid. They have remained good friends since then, and you can hear the love and respect they have for each other. Ladies and gentlemen, there is only one Midge Ure…
Kim Wilde has been a glamorous pop star from her teenage years. Her father is Marty Wilde, 60’s pop star, who’s family have become a lineage of excellence. Ricky, Kim’s brother, helped to write and produce a string of massive hits on the 80’s including Kids In America, Chequered Love and You Keep Me Hangin’ On, both in the UK and across the world and the US. She is also an author, radio DJ and television presenter, specialising in gardening and her love of wildlife. Martyn has toured extensively with her, and they have become close friends since Kim revealed her love of Heaven 17’s Penthouse and Pavement album as a 16 year old! She sang on the 3rd BEF album in 2015 and still tours and records extensively and successfully. She is as dynamic, intelligent and lovable as ever…
There is much intelligence and playfulness in Ana Lynch’s creative life. As Ana Matronic in the Scissor Sisters, she is an iconic figure in the glam-art pop-rock scene. She is also currently a Radio 2 DJ specialising in the wide world of disco, and with her husband, Seth Kirby, she creates large-scale ambient visual performances.
She burst onto the scene as the female co-lead vocalist for the Scissor Sisters. She has stated that, in her eyes, the objective of the band was "about people displaying their fantasies on the outside, trying to break out of the everyday, and look like their dreams". In The Scissorhood, the fan community for Scissor Sisters, those fans who hold a special affinity for Ana are known as "nuns". Fans who are attracted to Ana, even if they might not usually be attracted to women, term themselves "Anasexual".
As an author, she has published a book entitled Robot Universe: Legendary Automatons and Androids from the Ancient World to the Distant Future, and she is fiercely proud of her Celtic roots.
This episode is a fascinating insight into her alternate world of robots, sexuality, futurology and just plain fun.

Sandie Shaw is literally a living legend. She is one of the most successful British female singers of the 1960s, she had three UK number one singles with "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" (1964), "Long Live Love" (1965) and "Puppet on a String" (1967). With "Puppet on a String", she became the first British entry to win the Eurovision Song Contest. Martyn invited her to record a song for the British Electric Foundation album 'Music Of Quality And Distinction Vol 1', for which she recorded a version of "Anyone Who Had a Heart".
Sandie also featured on MQD Vol 3, and Martyn and Sandie have remained great friends for almost 30 years. Their conversation is wide ranging and often hilarious - not to be missed...
Glenn Gregory and Paul Bower are Martyn's oldest and best friends. Martyn met Paul when they both became trainee managers at the Co-op in Sheffield, and Paul introduced Martyn to Glenn to a youth drama project called Meatwhistle, which was to change his life. Glenn became a lifelong friend and collaborator - apart from various hilarious one-day-only bands created at Meatwhistle (not for public consumption), they went on to form Heaven 17 who are still alive and kicking and touring constantly to the current day.
There are reminiscences form the earliest days of their friendship, including a rare performance of several of the legendary Musical Vomit songbook...

Since then he has created many of his own solo albums to great acclaim and winning several awards, and even been responsible for a stage musical featuring his songs called 'Standing at the Sky's Edge'.
