Hey There EKPO Fans! We're continuing our focus on Women First with an encore presentation of this chat with Ani DiFranco. Enjoy!
-------------------
On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and folk singer Ani DiFranco, who’s gained critical recognition in the neo-Americana folk world for unaffectedly blending her eclectic sound with socially and politically charged lyrics. She is also widely accredited for mothering the DIY movement in music. DiFranco started her own record label, Righteous Babe, when she was 19 and has since released 22 studio albums. In 2019 she put out a memoir, titled No Walls and the Recurring Dream, in which she details her life as a musician and activist. Last month Ani released a double single, “Do or Die” and “Contagious,” along with a music video for the former. The video promotes voting by dropping the viewer into an illustrious, quintessential display of the streets of New Orleans, to culminate with a social justice street-dance-party, ending in a silent tribute to justice by the Magnolia Bridge. The slick, Wurlitzer-decorated groove in combination with her versatile vocal dynamics provide a nifty instrumental section to compliment her message of unity and justice. Ani and Kraz talk through her recent projects, the journey to the digital age of music, and about her musical style choices and breakthroughs. Ani goes in depth on the influences that brought her to her current standing, and how she did it herself to become a matriarch for the DIY movement in music. Over the next few months, we're going to revisit some classic episodes of the show. This week, we continue our focus on Women First with Victoria Canal. Enjoy!
---------------------------------------------
In this episode of Plus One Eric talks to his good friend and one of his favorite young artists, singer-songwriter Victoria Canal.
Having grown up across three continents and moving every year, from an early age Victoria used songwriting to channel her fears of not fitting in. It’s Canal’s complete comfort in her own skin that lets her trust audiences and be truly vulnerable with them, frequently bringing fans to tears. Her newest EP, Victoria, released on August 28th, represents a giant step forward for Canal as a writer and producer, and the resulting tracks convey a maturity far beyond her 22 years. Hear Victoria tell Eric why a seaside cliff near Barcelona was the only place to record such a profoundly personal album, and why it feels right to release it during such a difficult year.

“... when I listened back to “The Man In Me,” I was like okay we created this via “satellite” … but it really felt live, and it had a feel ... It felt like we were a band.” -- Eric Krasno
For the first episode of 2022, Eric Krasno returns to sit down with Otis McDonald to celebrate the release of their new album, Always! In this conversation, you’ll hear an in-depth rundown of the making of the record, including the story of how the two met through Adam Deitch in the beginning of the pandemic, the genesis of the Otis McDonald project, and using demo vocals for final mixes on the album. They also talk about Otis’ home base at Hyde Street Studios, which gave birth to classic albums by artists including the Grateful Dead and Herbie Hancock, using technology to work together remotely, and take a look inside of Kraz's musical headspace when he talks about the writing process for the album.
Joe Bagale, also known as Otis McDonald, lives by the philosophy that there are only two kinds of music; good music and bad music. He was born in upstate New York, but his tenure in San Francisco was where he definitively honed his craft, releasing three albums under his name from 2008 to 2014. Following the success of his early releases, Joe was commissioned by YouTube to write and record 30 new tracks for their audio library, which was the beginning of a new project he calls Otis McDonald. Playing all the instruments, writing, producing, mixing, and mastering 30 songs in a 3 month period, it proves to be his funkiest and most interesting music to date. Joe has shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, Mike Gordon, and many other legendary artists, and by the end of this episode, you'll know why he's had the success that he's had in recent years.

On this episode of Plus One, singer-songwriter and masterful pianist Neal Francis sits down with Kraz to discuss making his new record while living and recording in an old church, his early influences and the musical experiences that lead to the formation of the instrumental funk band called the Heard, and his recent tour with the Black Pumas. Neal and Kraz also trade stories of taking essential big leaps early in their careers, and talk about the Chicago music scene, Neal’s methodology for writing music and lyrics, and much more.
Neal Francis is a singer and songwriter from Oak Park, IL. “From a very early age, I was playing late into the night in a very stream-of-consciousness kind of way,” Neal has previously stated while citing influences ranging from ragtime to gospel soul to The Who. With a prodigy-like gift for piano, he sat in with a dozen different blues acts in Chicago clubs as a teenager, and formed a widely beloved funk band called The Heard before going solo. His new album, In Plain Sight, came out earlier this month, and is a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience, presented in a kaleidoscopic sound that’s endlessly absorbing.

You’ll also hear Nate dive deep on a songwriting credit that he received on a Michael Jackson tune, and Kraz tells Nate about a similar experience he had when 50 Cent used one of his own beats. The two friends also discuss how they were inspired by Herbie Hancock’s implementation of new-age technologies in his music, discovering James Brown and other funk artists through hip hop samples, and why Nate is thankful that he didn’t grow up around other musicians.

He has been a key piece in reinvigorating the international music scene with his visceral, instinctive, and deep-rooted style of drumming. In this episode of Plus One, Kraz welcomes one of the most proficient guitarists of all time, Leo Nocentelli of The Meters, onto the show. Leo and Kraz discuss everything from Leo’s thoughts on super-star artists sampling Meters songs, to his unconventional methods of gaining the confidence to play in front of crowds at an early age. The two also talk about Leo’s signature sound that he gets out of the Gibson ES-175, and he sheds light on the incredible rhythmic connection between drummer Zigaboo Modeliste and bassist George Porter Jr. You’ll also hear Leo talk about why The Meters split up in the late 70’s, the messiness of the business side of music, and why Leo enjoys being an essential contributor to the band from the background, and never the spotlight. This is a must-hear conversation between two masters of the guitar, and one of the most monumental musicians that funk has ever heard.
Leo Nocentelli is a founding member and the lead guitarist for The Meters, a band that is often credited alongside all-time greats like James Brown as being one of the sole originators of funk music. He’s written classic songs including “Hey Pocky A-Way,” and "Cissy Strut," which he and Kraz discuss in-depth in the conversation. On top of his work with The Meters, he boasts an incredible musical resume as a session player, having recorded with legends such as Etta James, Temptations, Dr. John, and Robert Palmer. He’s a recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Meters, but his playing and the band’s incredible discography speak for themselves, needing no official recognition. In this episode he details how he developed his one of a kind style that fuses funk, rock n’ roll, and jazz like no guitarist has ever done before.

In this episode, Porter and Kraz talk about the origin story of The Meters, Porter’s discovery of the bass guitar, playing with Bill Kreutzmann and The Dead, and many other fascinating tales of his extraordinary musical life.

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with bass-extraordinaire Oteil Burbridge, who is best known for his playing with the Allman Brothers Band and Dead & Co. Oteil’s musical resume is next-level; in addition to playing with the aforementioned groups, Oteil is also a founding member of The Aquarium Rescue Unit and Tedeschi Trucks Band, and has worked with Col. Bruce Hampton, Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Bill Kreutzmann, and many other legendary artists.
The conversation is too lively to be summed up in a few sentences, but in this episode Oteil and Kraz go deep on joining the Allman Brothers, learning the Grateful Dead’s songbook, new discoveries on the bass, and Oteil’s beautiful relationship with his late brother Kofi. If you’re a musician or simply a lover of music, this is a can’t-miss conversation between two longtime friends.
There’s nothing like an artist who approaches their craft with absolute passion and sincerity, and Oteil’s spiritual connection with music is on full display in this jam-packed episode. The way he talks about music makes you want to pick up an instrument yourself and start jammin’ away!

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with keyboard and organ virtuoso Cory Henry. Best known for his masterful keyboard playing with Snarky Puppy, Cory has recently gained recognition for his music with the Funk Apostles and for his new solo album, Something to Say. We already knew that Henry is an improvisational mastermind, and the new album showcases his ability to blend contrasting colors of the musical palette in a studio setting.
Henry has taken advantage of quarantine by making as much music as he can, and he looks forward to getting back to life on the road, even the 4:00 am lobby calls, as he jokes about in the podcast.
This conversation introduces the listener to the complex musical mind of Cory Henry, and in this episode you’ll hear Cory and Kraz talk about Cory's early days of playing, inspiration behind his new album, and future plans for the young star. Cory tells beautiful stories of his early encounters with music while playing the organ in church, as he talks admiringly about some of his favorite musicians and what they’ve taught him.

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist, singer, and songwriter John Oates of the legendary pop duo Daryl Hall & John Oates. Hardly requiring an introduction, Daryl Hall & John Oates created music that has defied generational confinement, and since their formation in 1970 they’ve solidified themselves as one of the greatest pop acts of all time, selling an estimated 40 million records including six No. 1 hits.
This jam-packed hour guides the listener through the dynamic musical life of John Oates, offering an intimate look into his innovative artistic mind. John walks Eric through the inception of Hall & Oates, their studio approach, and the full-circle journey of this extraordinary duo.
In 2021, Oates hopes to hit the road on a summer Hall & Oates tour, and fit in as many side gigs as he can. As he mentions in the podcast, “I’d play live whenever I could.” Oates’ love of music is evident in just about every second of the podcast, and his passion for his art is infectious.

On this week's Plus One, Eric speaks with the one and only Reggie Watts. Reggie and Kraz go way back, having toured together in the early 2000s. Reggie has gone on to a successful career as a band leader for both a fake late night talk show and now a very real one. Reggie spent several years on the show COMEDY BANG BANG before being asked to serve as bandleader and comic foil to James Corden on THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN, airing weeknights on CBS.
Eric and Reggie discuss Reggie's approach to making completely improvised music, how they are using the pandemic to work on their health, and share a few funny stories from their time touring together.

Coming up in the late 60's in the Haight-Ashbury scene, The Ace of Cups made a splash in clubs throughout the Bay Area, and opened at larger venues for legendary acts including Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, and The Band. Ace of Cups have also contributed backup vocals on several albums including Jefferson Airplane's Volunteers and Mike Bloomfield's It's Not Killing Me.
In 2018 the band reformed to release their eponymous debut studio album, containing both old and new material. The album features Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, David Freiberg, Pete Sears, David Grisman, Steve Kimock, Bob Weir, Taj Mahal and several other notable artists from the Summer of Love era.
The band just released their second album titled Sing Your Dreams in October, building off the newfound momentum inspired by their debut release. In this episode of Plus One, Eric and Denise talk about the genesis, separation, and revival of the band, and Kaufman includes enrapturing stories about the late-60’s in the Haight.

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and songwriter Cory Wong, whose intricate rhythmic style and eclectic solo projects have propelled him to prominence in the jazz and funk world. Widely exalted for his ambitious and genre-fusing solo projects, Wong has also received critical recognition for his playing with Vulfpeck, who have erupted through the underground indie scene to plant themselves as a modern-day staple for funk music listeners.
In 2019, Vulfpeck became the first band without a label or manager to sell out Madison Square Garden, and throughout 2020 Wong has worked to continue to push new boundaries with his music.
Musically nurtured in Minneapolis jazz clubs by former members of Prince’s band, Wong has developed a uniquely percussive rhythm technique. In this episode, Kraz and Cory talk about the influences that lead to Wong’s stylistic development, dive in-depth on songwriting and recording, and deconstruct life as a musician.

On this episode of Plus One Eric welcomes Theo Katzman, drummer, guitarist, and vocalist for the funk band Vulfpeck, who’ve used masterful marketing and creative music videos to amass an enormous underground following. In 2019 Vulfpeck became the first band without a manager or record label to sell out Madison Square Garden, and in 2020 they’re continuing to push the boundaries of independent music.
Earlier this year Theo released his third solo record entitled “Modern Johnny Sings: Songs in the Age of Vibe”, which features his smooth falsetto singing more personal lyrics than ever over his vintage funky singer-songwriter sound.
Theo’s dad played trumpet in legendary big bands with Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, and Duke Ellington, and Theo and Kraz discuss whether musical talent and style are hereditary. The two friends also get into the good and the bad of digital recording and modern music technologies, the internet genius of Jack Stratton, and how Led Zeppelin was responsible for both of their first musical breakthroughs.

On this episode of Plus One Eric welcomes singer and songwriter Son Little, whose blend of sonic and production styles hits a new level with his latest record “Aloha”, which he calls “aggressive lounge R&B”.
Little talks with Kraz about how Stevie Wonder and Prince were breakthrough influences for him, and the two reminisce about first meeting each other at a recording session with The Roots, who have featured Son Little on multiple albums. Eric and Son have collaborated on other projects since then, most recently the song “Apples” on Kraz’s 2019 record “Telescope”.
After their conversation, Eric and Son Little play a live, stripped-down take on Son's tune "about her. again" that you won't want to miss.

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to record producer Jeff Bhasker, who has won Grammys for his work with Kanye West, Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson, fun., and more. Eric and Jeff have been friends since college, when he was a jazz-obsessed keyboardist studying all forms of music but without a concept for what he’d make on his own.
Jeff describes how discovering Basquiat and other contemporary visual artists helped shape his own concept as an artist, and why “what’s the concept?” remains an essential question he asks musicians he works with.
Jeff also shares about working with Bruno Mars when Bruno was an 18 year old kid new to LA, and explains how he went from playing keyboard with Kanye West to producing his Grammy-winning records.

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to keyboardist and frontman Andy Frasco of Andy Frasco & The U.N. After interning with record labels as a teenager and managing bands on his own, Frasco was inspired to teach himself piano and make it as a performer. More than 10 years and 5 albums later, Andy Frasco’s engaging stage presence and the band’s soulful, bluesy rock have made Andy Frasco & The U.N. a fan favorite on the live music and festival circuit.
Andy tells Eric about constantly starting businesses as a kid and how that hustle helps him while making it as an outsider in the music industry. Andy also explains how he’s channelling his restless creative energy while stuck at home, his recent socially distanced concert at Red Rocks, and his process for making dreams come true.

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to bassist, producer, and TV personality Randy Jackson about his musical upbringing in Louisiana and the many reinventions throughout his career. Steeped in the New Orleans jazz scene and growing up performing with local legends, Randy became a decorated session musician who played with superstars like Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, and dozens more.
A chance meeting with visionary producer Tom Dowd changed Randy’s whole perspective on popular music and led him into A&R, producing, and eventually to American Idol. A man who knows how to listen to and make hits, Randy currently manages nine writer/producers and a handful of recording artists, all while running his holistic health company Unify Health Labs, and recording an album with Journey.
Randy and Eric discuss all of that plus their favorite guitarists, the power of New Orleans music, and joining forces on a future project.

In Episode of 18 Plus One Eric speaks with saxophonist and composer Cochemea Gastelum, whose 2019 album "All My Relations" is one of Kraz's most played records of the year. Cochemea made his mark as a member of The Dap-Kings, the potent funk and soul band behind the late great vocalist Sharon Jones. He's also played with artists from Amy Winehouse to Run The Jewels, always experimenting with effects and other sounds you might not expect from a sax player.
Cochemea brings that same experimental ethos to his solo material, drawing inspiration from his native roots and incorporating Navajo melodies, a Sanskrit prayer, and Mexican huapango rhythms with jazz and funk arrangements to produce a record that is truly one of a kind.

In Episode 17 of Plus One Eric talks with soul singer and bandleader Allen Stone. The son of a preacher, Allen describes how singing in church from the age of 3 built his musical chops for years before he was exposed to "secular" music. Once he heard Stevie Wonder's InnerVisions as a teenager Allen had found the sound he wanted to emulate, and you can hear echoes of Stevie and other R&B legends in each of Stone's four records.
Eric and Allen also discuss fatherhood, the lifelong search for contentment with the touring life, and what they tell up and coming artists when they're asked for advice.

In Episode 15 Eric talks to bluegrass sensation Billy Strings, whose hard-playing style and high-energy live shows are introducing bluegrass to all types of new fans. The two first met at the RoosterWalk Festival in 2017, when a storm prevented Eric's band from showing up and Billy's band sat in at the last minute. They've been friends ever since, and in those years Billy Strings has gone from releasing his first EP to selling out theaters across the country.
Billy tells Eric about being a young kid and playing music with his father, the gifted picker Terry Barber, as the genesis of his lifelong passion, and what it was like to perform at The Ryman Auditorium with his dad and Del McCoury. They discuss the bluegrass revival of the last decade, Billy's heavy metal roots, the electric guitar Billy's grandpa made in jail in 1961 that Billy still performs with, and a lot more.
Check out Billy Strings "Streaming Strings Tour", which features 9 nights of concerts live streamed from 5 different venues around Nashville, July 16-26th.
