Spiritual practice, like everything else in life, is evolving. What does this mean? By ‘Spiritual Practice’ I mean any activity that expands your sense of identity, for example meditation, contemplative philosophy, prayer, yoga, martial arts, psychedelics, transpersonal psychotherapy, fasting, visualisation, lucid dreaming, conscious parenting, forgiveness and much more. By ‘Evolving’ I mean that everything develops and adapts over time. Most of the spiritual traditions that have spawned these transformational practices emerged hundreds and often thousands of years ago in the pre-modern era. Modernity (rationality and science) and post-modernity (cultural diversity and the information age) are hugely influential historical periods that have happened since then, and I believe that contemporary spiritual practice needs to integrate the insights of these two worldviews as well as the premodern in order to keep being relevant and adaptive in a changing world.

In this conversation with Anthony Peake we discuss the bold hypothesis he calls ‘Cheating the Ferryman’: when we die we fully relive our lives again and again (a bit like the film Groundhog Day) Anthony proposes that we are composed of two entities, the Daemon who has lived our life over and over and remembers it all, who provides hints to the Eidolon who is renewed every new life. We talk about Deja vus and it’s relation to this hypothesis, temporal lobe epilepsy, schizophrenia, cannabis induced psychosis, near death experiences, DMT, Ketamine and synchronicity. Anthony has now written eight books, co-authored a ninth and co-edited a tenth. All of them develop his Cheating the Ferryman hypothesis into ever-wider areas of application.

In this conversation I talk to Christopher Hareesh Wallis about his book ‘Near Enemies of the Truth: Avoid the Pitfalls of the Spiritual Life and Become Radically Free’
Have you ever been told, “You create your own reality”? Have you been encouraged to “be your best self” or “follow your bliss”? Nowadays these slogans are everywhere, but what if they’re doing more harm than good? After over thirty years as a scholar-practitioner of meditation and Tantric philosophy, acclaimed author Hareesh explores the most widespread distortions of spiritual teachings present in our world today. Rooted in the Asian wisdom traditions, his book uncovers why these oft-heard platitudes are “near enemies” to the truth, often detour us off the spiritual path, and can even cause unnecessary suffering.

Kathryn was a Mormon from the age of 2 until 42 and in 2020 she had an awakening where she realised Mormonism was…..bullshit. We talk about her life as a Mormon, the type of things she used to believe in and what the institution was like. We go into the details of exactly how she came to question the truth of Mormonism, her leaving of the church and what her current life of freedom is like. She has completed a course with cult expert Steven Hassan to help her understand the nature of cults and the process of leaving them. She is due to start a university degree in the study in coercive control. Hearing stories like Kathryn’s are profoundly helpful as we all fall prey to ideological capture of some kind at different times in our lives whether religious, philosophical or political. We can also become free from these ideologies becoming wiser, humbled and more discerning.

Yeshe has lived a very interesting and unusual life. She has lived of-grid her whole adult live in basic hand made shelters called benders, yurts and for the last 12 years a round house which she built with her partner and raised a family in. All of these homes have not been connected to the electricity grid and services such as running water, mains gas, or sewers. It is a life close to nature and offers many benefits and challenges alien to the average modern human. She also spent 12 years travelling in India and Nepal and became the student of two gurus: a Hindu Yogi and a Tibetan Buddhist Lama. Lastly we touch upon the subject of psychedelics and her time being the carer for the famous psychonaut John C Lilly after he had a stroke.

Lama Tsultrim Allione was the first American to become a Tibetan Buddhist nun in 1970. For several years she lived in sacred places, caves and hermitages in the Himalayas. Later she disrobed, married and had four children. She maintained a deep practice and studied with many of the most important Tibetan teachers of the last 50 years. She is now a renowned teacher and one of the only female lamas in the world today. In the early 1970’s she was initiated into the Chad practice which was developed by the 11th century Tibetan yogini Machig Labdron. Some years later she began to teach the Chod practice and gradually developed her own version which is more suitable to contemporary Western practitioners which she calls ‘Feeding Your Demons’ a five step practice based on feeding not fighting our demons such as anxiety, depression, or addiction. In 2007 she was recognized in Tibet as the reincarnation of Machig Labdrön. She has written several books including ‘Women of Wisdom’ and ‘Wisdom Rising’.

Kim Barta is an experienced and versatile developmental psychotherapist, specialising in delivering specific therapeutic techniques to the different developmental stages humans grow through in their lives. He is skilled in working with the ‘shadow’ a term coined by Carl Jung to denote the parts of ourselves that our outside of our conscious awareness. Often the shadow is treated from a single perspective addressing only one aspect of the shadow with a bias towards integration. Kim breaks the shadow into three types: projections (which we do want to integrate back into ourselves for example if we project our own power onto an authority figure), introjections (which we actually want to let go of rather than integrate into us for example many aspects of sexual abuse), and split ego states (which we want to bring into awareness and harmonise for example when we feel conflicted about whether to chill out or work hard). The importance of distinguishing these types of shadow is that if the wrong technique is used it can create more harm than good - for example mistakenly trying to integrate aspects of sexual abuse that should be really be let go of.

Jahan Khamsehzadeh, Ph.D. completed his dissertation on psychedelics in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. His book, The Psilocybin Connection: Psychedelics, the Transformation of Consciousness, and Evolution of the Planet—An Integral Approach, was his dissertation. He earned his Masters in Consciousness and Transformative Studies from John F. Kennedy University, and his Bachelors from the University of Arizona with a major in Philosophy and minors in Physics and Psychology. Aside from academic work, he has undergone several major trainings, including graduating from the Hakomi somatic-psychotherapy comprehensive training program and training within the Mazatec mushroom tradition. He assisted the Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy Certificate training at CIIS for two years and mentored at the newly emerging School of Consciousness Medicine. He works as a facilitator for legal psilocybin mushrooms ceremonies in Jamaica with Atman Retreats, one of the few opportunities offered worldwide where people can legally experience psilocybin. Jahan is on the PsiloHealth integration team, volunteers at the Zendo Project (which provides psychedelic harm reduction at festivals), and leads a monthly group called “Developing a Relationship with Sacred Mushrooms” with the San Francisco Psychedelic Society. In this discussion we explore how to integrate psychedelic experiences - how to walk the talk and enact the changes in your identity that have been revealed to you during your trip. Integration is as key as the famous ‘set’ and ‘setting’ aspects of psychedelics work.

Chris Lewis (Chris walks the UK) is walking the entire UK coastline (20,000 miles). He has been walking for four and a half years so far and covered 16,000 miles. For three of these years he was walking solo in the wildest parts of the UK with hardly any money and foraging for wild food. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland in particular have large expanses of very wild country with extreme weather conditions and dangerous terrain. Solo time in the wilderness is one of the most ancient techniques for self discovery whether it’s the initiation of neophyte Shamans, Yogis living in Himalayan caves, a rite of passage from childhood into adulthood or a survival expert testing their skills and resolve.

Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of Essentia Foundation. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the 'Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). Formulated in detail in many academic papers and books, his ideas have been featured on 'Scientific American,' the 'Institute of Art and Ideas,' the 'Blog of the American Philosophical Association' and 'Big Think,' among others. In this conversation we discuss the similarities between the non-dual (consciousness only) view from the eastern traditions, the western philosophical view of metaphysical idealism and the experimental evidence of modern physics that support these views. We address the problems with the materialist view of reality and the nature of consciousness during waking, dreaming, death, reincarnation and psychedelic experiences.

This conversation is a comprehensive exploration of psilocybin mushrooms and their impact on our psychology, biology, and social development. How—and why—do psychedelics exist? Did psilocybin catalyze our early human ancestors’ social evolution? How humanity has co-evolved alongside “magic” mushrooms—Jahan Khamsehzadeh, PhD, explores our historical and ancestral relationship to psychedelics and presents new and exciting research about what psilocybin can mean for us today. Supported by archaeological evidence, neuroscience, and academic studies, he explores how mushrooms gave rise to art and expression, impacted spiritual experiences, and even spurred human brain development. We also explore the topic of psychedelic therapy as Jahan has trained with the Mazatec people of Mexico in traditional psilocybin mushroom use as well as western somatic therapy and works as a facilitator and therapist for Atman psilocybin retreats in Jamaica.

Mary Finnigan and Rob Hogendoorn have co-authored an amazing book exposing the corruption and abuse perpetrated by Sogyal Rinpoche and his multinational Tibetan Buddhist organisation Rigpa. Sogyal was probably the 2nd most famous Tibetan Buddhist in the world, after the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is a hugely successful book, selling millions of copies and being translated into many languages and in fact started my own spiritual journey in the 1990’s. Mary and Rob show that Sogyal didn’t even write most of the book, and that it was mainly written by a couple of his students, although he claimed authorship. Incredibly, despite numerous serious scandals revolving around sex, power and money, Sogyal managed to “teach” and lead the Rigpa organisation for about 45 years. This demonstrates a failure of the Tibetan Buddhist community at large to rein in such rogue actors and charlatans. In this conversation we explore the nature of Sogyal’s abuse of his students and what the warning signs are that people should look out for when joining spiritual communities and teachers. We also make suggestions of actions individuals and communities can take to make wholesome and healthy environments for spiritual practice and learning.

Zhal’Med Ye-Rig is a teacher in the Aro gTer which is a Vajrayana (Tantrik) lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The teachings of the Aro gTer descend from a lineage of enlightened women, beginning with Yeshe Tsogyel who founded the Nyingma tradition of Buddhism with Padmasambhava. The lineage is now represented in Britain, America and Europe by several Lamas and their senior ordained students. These teachers are Westerners which gives them some advantages over Eastern teachers in terms of understanding the minds and cultural context of Western students. These teachers are not monks or nuns. They are ordained Tantrikas who have conventional jobs and families. Many teach as married couples. Zhal’med Ye-Rig talks about his training over the past 20 years including several periods of retreat and intense practice.

Emergent Dialogue empowers you to participate in a new culture of creative togetherness. Through this collective practice, you become an agent of emergence, discovering how to make yourself available to what wants to become known between us. Neither simply a method nor a technique, emergent dialogue takes the most fundamental human activity—speaking with each other—and transforms it into a powerful shared space of curiosity, reverence, meaningfulness, and potential. Emergent Dialogue brings to life a Co-Conscious We. It takes us beyond interpersonal relationship into the dimension of shared intersubjectivity where co-consciousness and co-intelligence thrive as a new way of being. It is a process of collective sense-making that arises from the space between us—a space that has an intelligence greater than any of us individually. It is catalyzed by the longing in the human heart for wholeness, connection, and depth, which becomes a creative life force when we each dare to open ourselves to its presence, vulnerability, and power. It is a practice ideal for culture changers, intentional communities, social entrepreneurs, and pioneers of the human spirit. It is for anyone who wants to step beyond the boundaries of the known to find out what wants to emerge from the living intelligence that we share.

Damien Walter is a writer and storyteller. His work has appeared in The Guardian, BBC, Wired, Independent, Aeon and OUP. He teaches the rhetoric of story and writing the 21st century myth to over 35,000 students worldwide. He is also the host of the superb Science Fiction podcast. In this episode we discuss science fiction as the mythos of the modern scientific worldview. We feel that the best science fiction makes conscious use of both the logos (rationality) and mythos (the imaginal and non-rational) Two good examples being the original Star Wars movies and The Matrix. Wedding the mythos and logos in science fiction could provide a significant remedy to what many are calling ‘the meaning crisis’ of modern life.

Voice dialogue is a psychotherapeutic technique based on the view that we are composed of many sub-personalities or ‘voices’. That is why it is referred to as the psychology of selves as opposed to the mono-self view. Through the help of a facilitator we learn to speak in the 1st person from different ‘voices’, exploring their unique wisdom, benefits and downsides. Ultimately we discover we are not actually identified with any one of these sub-personalities but rather all of them held within awareness. In this episode I talk with Michael Garfield (host of the Future Fossils podcast, and Complexity podcast) about the Weirdness of this moment in history. Technology is steadily making its way towards, and eventually inside our bodies (desktop, to laptop, to smart phone, to brain implants, to biological computing) and this is causing many people to freak out. This process began with the use of the first tools but has gained momentum in the last 50 years. Michael challenges our assumptions about the boundaries we draw between ourselves, technology and the natural world and the distinctions we make between living and ‘non-living’ systems. How do we stay sane in a Weird moment in history defined by unstable climate, economy, pandemic, social structures and technologies? Just when we acclimatise to a ‘new normal’ the global snow globe gets shaken up again and we scramble to make sense once again. Surfing and sailing become the appropriate metaphors for riding and navigating this kind of turbulence.

In this conversation with author and Integral philosopher Steve McIntosh we explore the practice and cultivation of the 7 classic virtues (justice, prudence, temperance, courage, love, hope and faith) that have been central to Western culture for the last 1000 years, and prior to that in simplified form dating back to ancient Greece. These virtues are the tools for harnessing the value energy of 'The Good' (as in the Good, the True and the Beautiful as described by Plato) this leads to the creation of a robust Soul and character that enables us to navigate the tempestuous seas of life and death. The virtues have mainly been associated with the moral instruction and obligations of traditional Christianity and we argue that they are just as important in a modern and postmodern / progressive context and are the antidote to the nihilism which is afflicting much of contemporary culture (currently more people commit suicide than die in wars and natural disasters combined!)

Iboga is a potent psychedelic plant native to Central West Africa. For the Bwiti and Pygmy people, Iboga has been used for thousands of years for physical and spiritual healings, self-discovery, and to study the Art of Living. It is also very successful in freeing people from addictions to substances like opiates and negative behaviours like OCD. Levi Barker has been working with Iboga for 12 years, and has worked at the Iboga Wellness retreat centre in Costa Rica for the last 6 years helping many hundreds of people through Iboga ceremonies. He has travelled to Gabon several times to study with an indigenous shaman and has undergone the gruelling traditional Bwiti Iboga initiation in the jungle.

In this conversation with spiritual teachers Linda Groves-Bonder and Saniel Bonder we discuss some of the key attributes of a 21st century spiritual practice. We pay particular attention to healing the spirit / matter split that is so prevalent in many pre-modern traditions East and West and continues into modernity where spirit is completely stifled and we are left with an entirely mechanistic view of life. We also explore the different experiences of Awakening: waking up as transcendent formless awareness up and out of life, and waking down as formless awareness intimately expressed as matter in the ultimate paradox of the Heart. Saniel and Linda teach, and live from the view that there is no final destination called Enlightenment or Awakening. Awakening is simply a ‘2nd birth’ and what follows is an unending evolutionary unfolding of ever greater complexity and nuance. Another key aspect of their teaching is that it is based around mutuality - we are all in this together and as teachers they help facilitate our own learning and understanding rather that pour doctrine into us as is so common in the traditional context.

In this conversation with Integral psychotherapist Mark Forman we explore the differences between psychotherapy and spiritual practice and the specific contexts when each of these methods is most appropriate. For example your meditation practice may bring up psychological issues that your meditation teacher will likely be unqualified to help you with and you would get more effective help from a psychotherapist. If you are having transpersonal experiences with meditation or psychedelics then a psychotherapist may not have the relevant skills to unpack them. Unfortunately many spiritual traditions and teachers claim that meditation and psychedelics are the complete answer to everything in your life, and lots of ‘spiritual’ people wreck their personal and family lives by neglecting psychotherapy. On the other hand if you only explore psychotherapy then it’s likely you will never tap into the depths of experiences beyond your personality that are brought forth by spiritual practices.

In this conversation with Donald Clark we explore his 4 year journey with the Wim Hof method and cold water therapy. Donald has been working with the Wim Hof breathing techniques in conjunction with cold showers, ice baths and his experimental modifications to a chest freezer creating a plunge pool with temperatures as low as -7 degrees centigrade. We focus in particular on the psychological and transpersonal experiences that can be opened up by cold water techniques and what to do with them.

This is a recording of a lesson I taught on the panoramic awareness technique in meditation. This technique is different to the use of focused attention as used in following the breath for example. Panoramic awareness is effortless, always in the present moment, luminous, free and endlessly fascinating. We don't make awareness happen as it is simply a fact of our identity and we find out through practice that it is actually the essence of our sense of self.

In this conversation with Jeff Salzman we explore how incorporating the three major worldviews of Traditionalism, Modernity and Postmodernity into ourselves can expand our identity, making us stronger, wiser and more empathetic. These three worlviews are tearing each other apart in the 'culture wars' out there in mainstream culture. This culture war is repeated inside the psyche of individuals too. We can heal these wounds by understanding and feeling the unique benefits of each worldview while moving away from their unique downsides.

In this episode I explore the spiritual side of strength training and long distance running with Gary Hawke. We are often led to believe that Yoga is the only 'spiritual' form of exercise out there. But what if you feel an affinity with the life of a yogi but are not drawn to classical yoga? Any type of exercise, from solo forms like strength training to team sports, can bring us to a collision with the infinite when used intentionally as a technique of ecstasy. This conversation explores the subtle art of expanding your identity through exercise and sport.

How do you pray when you don’t believe in a wise old man who lives in the sky? Are deities out there in the universe or are they archetypal forms of our own psyche and does it actually matter which is true? What’s the difference between the law of attraction and prayer? What are the similarities and differences between meditation and prayer? You will find exceptions to these generalisations. With that caveat here we go: Different traditions say different things about who we are, and they often contradict each other. Could it be that they are all right but have a part of the truth that they are trying to hold up as the whole truth? If we use the metaphor of each tradition being a musical note, each moment presents itself as the different notes integrated into a chord. That is the oneness of our identity. It can be hard initially to get any traction with this mushy oneness blend until we have seen the manyness as well. Our identity can be separated out in a great many ways but let’s look at the 3 main ones that crop up in spiritual traditions and psychology. Our individual personality - you know the one we love and hate! Mother Nature - if you don’t believe Mother Nature is part of your identity try not eating, drinking and breathing and see how that works out for you. Formless awareness- awareness is a rather bland word but it’s all we have in English. Awareness is formless because it has no colour or shape, and no simple location, yet it is unmistakably a key aspect of our identity. Awareness is not just an “it” we can talk about but is also an “I” as the core of subjectivity. Western psychology tends to lean towards our limited personality being the only real identity. It doesn’t often deal with our transpersonal nature. Ecology tends to lean towards Mother Nature being the only real identity. We are the web of biological connections, seamlessly integrated into our environment. We are Mother Nature. Many meditation eastern traditions lean towards formless awareness being the only real identity. This is because formless awareness is the only unchanging part of our identity throughout our lives or moment to moment. Just because it’s permanent doesn’t mean it’s better than our ever changing personality or ever evolving Mother Nature. Is a stone better than a flower? Try making music with just one note and it’s pretty crap. Each moment is 3D, technicolour, surround sound etc. Do you want your identity and life to be a rich piece of music or a one note monotone? A chord is still one thing, one moment / our identity presented in its totality all at once. But a chord is also made of several notes. Once you’ve seen the notes on their own you better understand what makes the chord. Even though all these aspects of your identity are present simultaneously, each will naturally come to the forefront at different occasions when appropriate. When your 4 year old son proudly shows off his Lego model to you he wants you to reach out with your personality and warm him up with your appreciation and affection. He doesn’t want or need you to sink into formless awareness and present him with silence. When meditating it is entirely appropriate at different stages along the path to zero in on formless awareness rather than meditate over identified with your personality. If you a sitting on a mountain peak it’s appropriate to revel in the miracle of you shared embodied identity as and with Mother Nature. Enjoy your life in 3D folks.

The esoteric spiritual traditions excel at delivering a 1st person experience of divinity: the deity is not just out there (3rd and 2nd person perspective) but also in you and me….we are that in the 1st person. Modernity has keenly focused on the objective world, the 3rd person perspective, and helped us fall in love with amazing intelligence and beauty of Nature. But, that awe and devotion is directed outwards towards Nature. What if we do a 180 degree shift and recognise the 1st person experience “I am Nature”. Evolution is one of the biggest ideas in modernity. It’s not just about ‘the survival of the fittest’, but is also an exhilarating unfolding of greater complexity within ourselves, culture and nature. What is it like to feel this creative evolutionary urge as our own identity? Could this be a solution to the meaning crisis of modernity? Could this be a path of ‘spiritual’ practice for atheists?

Meditation is a very effective relaxation technique, and for many people this is the goal of their practice, and a worthy one. It can also be a technique for realising something more radical: waking up from the dream of exclusive identification with your personality (often called ‘the self’ or ‘ego’ in meditation literature). This sounds quite odd, disorientating and even scary. I am going to demonstrate that this is actually everyone’s experience all the time whether they know it or not, and is the most natural and easy way to be. We will discover that we actually have a greater capacity than we usually assume. What I am about to describe is not a philosophy. It’s a direct, living experience that is there for you to find for yourself. You don’t have to obliterate your personality through austere and cruel practices, it’s more a case of looking carefully and honestly at what is actually happening in your moment to moment experience. Once, you have woken up to what lies within, beyond and behind your personality, you have more freedom to be creative, and be more open to what other people and life have to offer.

I would like to offer my story as a lesson in both the blessings and the perils of psychedelics use, may it benefit those others walk this path. I feel like I can now come out of the closet as someone who has been an enthusiast and keen practitioner with these substances for many years. I believe opinion is shifting on this topic because many very successful mainstream public figures, for example Steve Jobs, Sam Harris and Joe Rogen have spoken of the contribution these substances have made to their lives and as a result people are less quick to write off everything else you say or do if you mention that you are partial to a few magic mushrooms every now and then. The public are realising that these are not merely play things for recreational use at music festivals, giving users a bizarre but fundamentally useless experience, but are also powerful catalysts for genuine transformation.

Could a world spirituality be the first ever complete spiritual path? Our contemporary moment presents us with a pluralism of truths and I believe it is time to make a world spirituality that brings together the distinct strengths developed in the many cultures of our planet’s history. The great gift of our era is that we have all the various spiritual traditions available to us, and we can watch them compete with each other and see which is most appropriate and effective in different circumstances. The truths revealed in the three domains of spirituality (physical, subtle and formless) are so powerful and attractive on their own terms that they can turn people in to ‘true believers’ of the ‘one legitimate path’. I am agreeing that these truths are powerful, I know because I have done 25 years of sustained practice in all three of them and intend to continue to do so for the rest of my life. But I am calling for us to take the next step and combine them to make something new and even more powerful. It is an experiment, and we don’t know the outcome for sure, but I believe it’s a risk worth taking. Let’s see how this plays out on the global stage. The proof will be if it creates human beings capable of bringing greater goodness, truth and beauty into the world?

This is an introduction to the Evolving Spiritual Practice podcast giving you an idea of what to expect.
