A podcast about movies and the scenes that make them special.
Each week, hosts Dom Nero and Adam Volerich explore a movie by finding the scene at its core–what David Lynch calls an ”Eye of the Duck” scene.
Join Dom and Adam as they celebrate cinema’s greatest scenes, charting franchises such as Alien, The Evil Dead, and Indiana Jones, and major movements in film history, like ’80s Dark Fantasy, Winter Horror, and Cyberpunk.
The podcast Eye of the Duck is created by Dom Nero and Adam Volerich | Morbid Network | Wondery. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
This week we finish off our UFO miniseries with the long overdue Eye of the Duck debut of Wes Anderson!
ASTEROID CITY asks all the big questions from we’ve been trying to answer since we began this miniseries back in the summer: where do aliens come from? Why are they here? What do they want from us?! And was it really just Jeff Goldblum in a latex suit all along?
Next week, it’s the outro for our miniseries, where we’ll be tying off loose ends, answers listeners questions…and announcing what’s next for show!! Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

It’s the penultimate film of our UFO invasion series and the only one to feature an evil monkey, a suicidal cinematographer, and a nasty alien thing called “jean jacket.” Oh, and Osgood Perkins!
Jordan Peele’s latest big budget spectacle has so much to say. But does it all come together in the end? We tried our best to find some answers without getting chewed up and spit out by the cowboy hat monster.
Next week, it’s the final movie of our series. Wes Anderson’s ASTEROID CITY. Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

It's literally impossible. But it's literally what we're covering this week on the show. Welcome to The Shimmer.
Joining us for some very sobering (and demented) meditations on Alex Garland's UFO thriller is returning guest, Jefferson White! He's no stranger to Garland's work, having appeared in the director's most recent film, CIVIL WAR. And we're thrilled to have him here to answer some of our weirdest questions about Garland and this mysterious film.
Next week, it's our penultimate film of the series, and a gigantic one at that–Jordan Peele's NOPE. Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

This week we gain two new friends…and bring an old one back! It’s Abbott, Costello, and returning champion Sarah Welch-Larson for the most requested film in Eye of the Duck history!
ARRIVAL is a dense one, but luckily Sarah has the linguistic expertise to help us unlock the mystery of the heptapods and save planet earth from itself.
Next week we travel deep into the wacky (and evil?) Shimmer for Alex Garland’s ANNIHILATION. Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

This week we are pausing our release schedule to pay tribute to the godfather of our podcast, the late, great David Lynch.
Usually on our show, we talk about movie scenes. But for this dedication, we've selected a handful of clips of Lynch–the man, not his movies–to discuss. It's our hope that by sharing his voice, and connecting over his philosophy, all of us can find some comfort in the tragedy of his passing.
We have a channel dedicated to Lynch in our Discord if you're looking to connect with us and other listeners about the legendary filmmaker who inspired this podcast: https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx
Next week, we'll return to our regularly scheduled programming. In the meantime, keep your eye on the donut.

This week we venture deep into the abyss for Jonathan Glazer’s unnerving science fiction masterpiece, the only movie on earth that is somehow equal parts NATHAN FOR YOU and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.
How does this film even exist? What happens in that dark room? Is it all as real as it looks? Listeners, we tried our best to find some answers for you.
Next week, it’s the most-requested film in Eye of the Duck history, Denis Villeneuve’s ARRIVAL. Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

We are officially one flavor away from completing the Cornetto trilogy! It’s Edgar Wright’s thrilling and deliciously stupid body snatcher comedy this week, the third in our series to feature Mr. Nick Frost.
Coming along for our apocalyptic hometown pub crawl is returning guest, Ethan Warren. Is this the perfect ending to the only film trilogy based on ice cream? Listen to find out.
Next week, it’s perhaps the strangest film in our UFO series, Jonathan Glazer’s UNDER THE SKIN. Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

The aliens may be fuzzy this week… but they’re also very scary and mean. It’s our first Joe Cornish movie, and one of the great science fiction films of the 21st century!
Topics discussed this week: the high expectations for Cornish’s career, the STRANGER THINGSification of all media, whether or not Terry Notary was indeed the Silver Surfer in FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER, and we try to answer the question, why aren’t these hairy aliens wet?
Next week, we conclude our Edgar Wright-connected UFO trio with THE WORLD’S END. Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

It’s mint! This week we hang out with a crew of teenage filmmakers…and one very big scary tarantula alien-looking guy.
It’s JJ Abram’s big budget 70s throwback adventure, with a hint of BLOW-UP, and a whole lot of Spielberg influence. It’s the final Amblin movie of our series!

Listeners, you didn’t ask for it, but we did it anyway. This week it’s the one alien we specifically promised we wouldn’t talk about…and he’s chill as hell.
Topics covered in our very deep dive of PAUL: Seth Rogen’s new show that seems dangerously similar to ENTOURAGE, whether or not Paul smells like shit, and of course, Grandpa Stevey Spielberg.

It’s Neil Blomkamp’s debut feature, where action blockbuster meets guerrilla-style documentary. Can you believe this is Sharlto Copley’s first acting job?! Also, where the hell is DISTRICT 10?!
Next week we come face to face with destiny. Yes, we’re doing Greg Mottola’s PAUL. Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

It's James Gunn week on the pod, and we're (finally) talking about the DC Studio head and his origins as a down-and-dirty genre guy.
Between the mouth-stuffing slugs and Michael Rooker's lovably demented performance as a human meat volcano, SLITHER has a little bit of everything. And we're all for it.

Topics discussed: post-9/11 filmmaking, the glory of MUNICH, Patrick’s upcoming short film (!!), Gore Verbinski’s PIRATES movies, the Tom Cruise Running Score, longing for Peter Jackson’s comeback, and some text message dispatches from WAR OF THE WORLDS vfx artist, Todd Vaziri.

Teachers stink! It’s our very first Robert Rodriguez joint this week. And perhaps the most ‘90s movie ever made. Come for the deep dive on alien imposter horror…and stay for the very academic discussion of Josh Hartnett’s terrible haircut.

The Willenium is here, y’all. We’re hitting yet another Will Smith classic this week with the Barry Sonnenfeld buddy-alien-cop caper, MEN IN BLACK.
Aliens are here among us, and it turns out, the majority of them are weird little guys who live inside other bigger weirder guys. Listen in before we all get neuralyzed.
Next week, it’s another gnarly cult favorite (and our very first Robert Rodriguez), THE FACULTY. Join the conversation on Eye of the Discord https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx.

Did he really get probed? Are polygraph tests conclusive? Why didn’t Henry Thomas get any lines in this movie?! Joining us to answer these questions and more is our old friend and co-host of the Mostly Horror podcast, Sean Parker!

Surprise! We didn’t originally have a James Cameron alien movie on the list for this miniseries…but then we fell into an abyssal trench. And we found some non terrestrial intelligence down here! We simply could not pass up the chance to explore the depths of a production so notoriously grueling, Cameron himself described it as his “nightmare.” So come on in, the water is (definitely not) warm.

It's pod people, pop psychologists, mud baths, and one very grumpy health inspector this week. Philip Kaufman's iconic remake is bursting with 1970s cooky vibes, courtesy of Michael Chapman's singular cinematography, and Leonard Nimoy's very small leather glove. Best remake of all time?

Surprise! We are interrupting our regularly scheduled broadcasting for a very special transmission: The perfect organism is back! And so are we.
This week, we’ll be sharing our initial reactions to Fede Alvarez’s ALIEN: ROMULUS. No production history or duck scenes. Just raw, unfiltered Xenomorph worship. That’s right. It’s Xenomorph Summer again, baby.
Next week we return to our UFO miniseries with the 1978 remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Join the conversation at https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx

Grandpa Steve is back, and he's brought all kinds of funny little guys with him this time! Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS may have been overshadowed in its time by the likes of a small space opera movie called STAR WARS...but here at Eye of the Duck, we couldn't be more excited to celebrate all its hopeful (and neurotic) wonder.

It's a glob, it's a mass, it's Steve McQueen? In a sci fi movie?! Yes it's THE BLOB. While Americans were eating weird amounts of gelatin at their dinner tables, a gooey monster from outer space was pouring into their movie theaters and consuming them all. This may be our only "B-movie" type alien movie in our Invasion miniseries, but it's by no means the most insignificant one on the list! Eye of the Blob!

To the bat-tank! It's another bonus this week. Rachel Talalay's TANK GIRL may not exactly take place in George Miller's dystopian world...but it's close enough. Camelot is a state of mind. And a bonus (!) episode for our Mad Max series! This week it's George A. Romero's criminally unappreciated KNIGHTRIDERS, a film about guys who joust on motorcycles. It sounds like madness, but it's actually a moving testament to artistic purity from one of cinema's most uncompromising visionaries. We love it! And we hope you will too.

Wake up, time to die! It’s the miniseries premiere(!!) of 20XX, our descent into the neon-tinted cultural movement known as Cyberpunk. We’re so excited for this series to lift off with one of the most influential science fiction films in American history, Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER! How much did Harrison Ford hate those voice-overs? Did Edward James Almos really create a new language just for this movie? Take the Voight-Kampff test with us and listen to find out who the real replicants are.

The new year is here, and our Cyberpunk miniseries is about to begin! But before that, we have some truly staggering movies to celebrate from 2023. And so our annual challenge faces us yet again: can Adam and Dom select only 5 movies to highlight? Probably not! But you'll have to listen to find out!
A big hearty thanks to everyone helped make 2023 another amazing year for our podcast. Big news to come for 2024!

Bonus!! It’s been 2 whole years, and we’re doing something we’ve never done before….back in 2021 we shared a rare in-person screening of David Lowery’s THE GREEN KNIGHT right in the midst of the pandemic. It was a whirlwind (the projector was out of focus for most of it). Now that we’ve given the movie a proper (and very thorough) viewing, we couldn’t resist reevaluating it for this series. Off with yer head!

Inconceivable! As we near the end of the 80s, one (kind of) dark fantasy movie stands proudly in our way...PRINCESS BRIDE! It may not be the most brooding or atmospheric of the pack, but there's simply no way we couldn't dissect this all-time genre highlight.

[Whip sound!!!!] Today we rewind through a fissure in time and return to our Indiana Jones miniseries for one last movie. Joining us to explore DIAL OF DESTINY are returning guests, Griffin Newman and Connor Ratliff, who you might know as the hosts of The George Lucas Talk Show.
Covered in this (very long) discussion: Griffin's franchise exhaustion, Connor's Indy watching order, the hubris of Disney's de-aging tech, the late careers of Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and, of course, the enduring mysteries of George Lucas.

Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of...it's the big one, duck-heads. John Milius's CONAN may not be the most subtle movie. But it's the start of something big, awesome, and unshakeable. Let us tell you of the days of high adventure!

Podcasters of the round table, assemble. John Boorman's EXCALIBUR may be a bit grittier and more 1970s-esque than the bulk of the '80s Dark Fantasy films on our slate. But the genre (and many actors' careers) simply does not exist without it. Also, this technically counts as our second Grail quest movie.

Today we're blasting off to Planet Mongo, facing down (and cringing over) Ming the Merciless, and making sense of the madness that is Mike Hodges's FLASH GORDON. Also...Queen!

It's a classic romantic comedy. Lonely trash robot meets sentient space probe. You'll laugh. You'll cry. Your soul will be shattered and jettisoned into the abyss.
Our last movie of Eye of the Duck: A Space Odyssey is WALL-E. So you know we had to leave you (and ourselves) in an emotional black hole. Thanks, Pixar.

When Ridley Scott goes to space, we follow. That's just the rule of our podcast. If you're a longtime listener, a friend of the show, or just someone who's walked past us on the street, you can probably tell how important ALIEN is to our friendship. And this is as close as we're going to get to talking about our beloved Xenomorph in this space series.
The question is, though, you can take the Xenomorph out of the Ridley Scott space movie, but can you take the space movie out of the Xenomorph? Actually, that doesn't make any sense. Matt Damon potato poop

Hold on. There's a whole other movie from 1998 about a doomed crew rocketing to outer space to board an asteroid and cancel humanity's extinction? Really? From the SAME year? It just wouldn't be fair to do ARMAGEDDON without DEEP IMPACT. So here we are. And hey, Elijah Wood's in this one! Rad!

If you haven't watched EVENT HORIZON, this is your chance. Come aboard the Lewis and Clark as we venture to Proxima Centauri and chant into an unfeeling void, "Libera Te Tutemet Ex Inferis."

Murph. We're coming home. Join us this week for one of those "this is why we started this podcast" kind of episodes.
It's no coincidence that Nolan's space epic is coming up right smack dab in the middle of our miniseries. INTERSTELLAR somehow encompasses every space movie ever made...and yet it still manages to be such a singular achievement in the genre. So you better believe we went long this week!

This is a space movie! It may only spend a total of like 20 minutes in outer space…but it still counts!
For our first ever Robert Zemeckis film, we’re hanging out with Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, and a very prominent Bill Clinton down on Earth, trying to decode a (potentially problematic) broadcast from far above.
Is this a bonus episode? Even we’re not completely sure.

It happened. The episode is here. It's Kubrick's foundational science fiction epic, and we tried our darnedest to contend with it in (nearly 3 hour) podcast form. Even though sorting through the abyss of this movie is kind of like staring at the sun. Or, scraping an alien(?) monolith capable of bestowing knowledge to an entire civilization. To quote Hal, "[We're] afraid, Dave."

It’s our 2 year anniversary, we’ve joined the Morbid Podcast Network, and we couldn’t be happier to be here. For new listeners: welcome to Eye of the Duck! Today is a special (non-series) episode.
Before we embark on new frontiers, we’re looking back on everything we’ve done with the show, and the year 2022 in (mostly) American cinema.
Today we’re highlighting five of our favorite films of the year, and talking about what’s to come now that we’re a network show. 2023, Year of the Duck!

We have some wild news to announce!! Eye of the Duck has joined the Morbid Podcast Network! Our podcast is now available ad-free for Wondery Media subscribers and on Amazon Music.
What does this mean for the future of our show? Well, for starters, it gives us resources to make the best podcast we can make. The feed will remain the same on all podcast platforms––but Amazon/Wondery listeners will get episodes a week early.
A HUGE thanks to Wondery, Amazon Music, and especially Ash and Alaina at Morbid for taking a chance on our little show.

This week, we’re joined by horror experts and new friends Sean Parker and Steve Goldberg of the Mostly Horror podcast to unpack the incredibly daring (and bizarre) late-career zombie thriller, DIARY OF THE DEAD. Which, technically, is a student film (?)

New miniseries premiere!! The leaves are falling, the air is crisp, and the dead are rising from their graves. Welcome to FALL OF THE DEAD. This week we are exploring George A. Romero's landmark horror, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, where the zombies are definitely not zombies because they are called Ghouls. But they're probably just zombies? Like, maybe the first zombies ever? Our intro song for Winter Hell is a mish mosh of soundtracks and dialogue clips that are pulled from horror films that take place in the frozen cold. Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind’s “Main Title” track for The Shining and Ennio Morricone’s composition for The Thing are the central themes you hear.
The outro music is the ominous end credits song from The Shining called “Midnight and the Stars are You” by Ray Noble and His Orchestra with vocals by Al Bowlly.

Kubrick's seminal 1980 hedge maze of a horror film is despairingly cold, trapped indoors, and cursed with cabin fever. It's the ultimate WINTER HELL movie.
