Today, we explore homeschooling elementary-aged children.
Oftentimes, parents begin to add pressure on children with formal academics before it is actually developmentally appropriate. In this episode, Carole Joy Seid and Rachel Winchester discuss how to ease the pressure of formal academics when homeschooling elementary-aged children.
These years are when the "better late than early" approach is so important as parents prepare their elementary-aged kids for a gradual transition to more serious studies in middle and high school.
When homeschooling elementary-aged children, we want to take things slow. Academics should build over time so as to prevent academic burnout.
Carole and Rachel discuss integrating study, work, and service by doing short, concrete lessons in phonics, real-life math, and handwriting. And of course, they encourage reading out loud to develop a love for reading!

Are you looking for peace in homeschooling? Quieting the voices, listening to the research, and following a plan that works for your family is the path to peace in homeschooling. Another way to gain peace is by hearing the stories of those who have gone before us. Learning from the experiences of others is one of the great benefits of homeschooling-what worked and what didn't!
Carole speaks with Connie Wright and her daughter, Ashley Becker, who found peace and success in their homeschooling journey.
Connie and her husband transitioned to homeschooling after trying public and private schools. She then attended one of Carole's conferences and shifted their approach to literature-based learning. They began to feel such freedom and peace in their children’s self-learning which strengthened their family relationships and created beautiful memories through read-alouds, family discussions and time together.

This is the time of year when our hearts desire what is real, what is valuable, and what is meaningful. At this time, I always climb up on a step stool to the top of the bookcase in the dining room and pull down a stack of what I call “the Christmas books.”
Over the years I have read these out loud and we have cherished many of these stories as a family, but I also love the joy of just reading them alone on a quiet afternoon, as the sun pours through the bay window.
I thought I would list some of these books for you, and share a little bit about each of them.

I've known Bruce and Sonya Manson for a few decades now. We met in preschool!! ;-)
Bruce is a public school teacher who's own children are homeschooled! I love the Manson's perspective. They have truly drunk the kool-aid of my literature based approach to education.
You'll hear about the Manson's children's different journeys. They've graduated four of their eight children using my methods from the very beginning. Each one has taken a different path after completing their schooling at home.
Bruce and Sonya share about their motivation for homeschooling, what holds their family together, and how they educated eight children at home!

This conversation with Jesse and Rachel Winchester will inspire you to build your family culture around time spent outdoors!

Sometimes we doubt whether we are the expert of our own children. But as Dr. Raymond Moore used to always remind us, "You are the expert on your child. No one loves them better than you do. No one knows them better than you do."
It can be difficult to listen to that instinct, but we reap great rewards when we do.
Listen in as I chat with Brian and Kaleen Ezelle about their daughter, Vera, and their family's experience sending her to school then deciding to homeschool instead.
What you'll hear in this episode:
- What's wrong with the hybrid school model
- Dr. Moore's advice for every parent
- The way you build quiet self-confidence in your child
- How children learning can be integrated into the family life
- The value of paying attention to your own children's needs

Born in Scotland, Mary Slessor had a difficult childhood as her father was a drunkard and caused the family great difficulty. However, her mother was a godly woman who gave Mary a passion for missions.
Living in Calabar, Nigeria, in Africa during the early 1900s, Mary adapted herself to the local lifestyle. She fearlessly lived among tribes that others feared throughout her life and took the gospel wherever she went. Mary Slessor is a true hero of the Christian faith. Henrietta Mears became the Director of Christian Education and Teacher of the College Department at The First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood in her late thirties in the early 1900s.
She was passionate about the inerrancy of the Word of God and the continuity of curriculum in teaching the Bible, especially in Sunday School. She started Gospel Light which continues to write and distribute curriculum.
She influenced many young people who became influential in their own right as well. Listen in to meet this amazing woman!

The phrase "Better Late Than Early" coined by Dr. Raymond Moore and Dorothy Moore, changed the course of education in America. book they wrote in 1975. I first heard the Moores on Focus on the Family, and it was basically the launch of the homeschool movement in America.
Unfortunately, we have never had more reading failure and learning disabilities in our country, and we have never taught our children to read, write, and do arithmetic as early as they do now. In Dr. Moore's research, he found that there was not one reputable study to support the start of early education and that there was actually the ability for early learning to cause harm.
In this episode, I share from the Moore's book, "Better Late Than Early".
You'll hear:
- Why we need to look at the facts instead of the neighbors.
- The question to ask yourself each day to guide your parenting.
- The socialization our children really need.
- How kindergarten has become the new first grade.
- Why attachment plays a part in effective education.
- The stimulus of children's development and how to raise a lifelong learner.
Better Late than Early looks like waiting until a child is 8-9 years old to teach them to read. Reading incorporates all the the senses. Waiting for readiness means the experience of learning to read can be painless and enjoyable, because as John Saxon taught us, "We're good at what we like, and we like what we're good at."

In this episode, I interview my friend, Betsy Hake, founder and director of Jericho Ministries in Honduras.
Betsy tells the story of how she began making evening visits to a high prostitution area in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. As the women began to trust Christ with their lives, they needed help finding work with dignity. Out of that need was born the sewing workshop of Jericho. The women were discipled in the ministry and learned job skills while witnessing to their friends who were still trapped in prostitution. The families of the women at Jericho were the reason for starting our schools and family homes. Jericho Ministries' vision is to equip women and children to glorify God by breaking the chains of prostitution, sexual abuse, and addictions that have plagued their families for generations. (from their website)

What is spiritual mothering?
The idea of spiritual mothering is grounded in a passage in Titus 2: 3-5: "the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things - that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that they word of God may not be blasphemed."
In this episode, I talk with Rachel Winchester and Laura Drew about what it is to spiritually mother, their own experiences of motherhood, and how they practice this in their own lives.

In this episode, I'd like to introduce you to a woman who has had a profound influence on many lives, including my own.
Amy lived as a missionary in India for most of her life. She rescued children from Hindu temples and created a haven for them at Dohnavur Fellowship. She became "Amma" to countless children and was even influenced by Charlotte Mason's philosophy of education. She also wrote prolifically, especially in her later years.
She teaches us to walk with God by faith where he places us despite the challenges that may come.
Do everything you can to gather her books! You want to raise your children loving her, but you will be challenged and encouraged by reading Amy's story and her faithfulness to the Indian people.
My one take away from Amy: her complete trust in God despite suffering, misunderstanding, and sorrows. She never gave up on God, because she knew he would never give up on her.

The number one rule of building a library is this: a bad book is a big thief.
If you want to learn how to build a home library for posterity, I share foundational books for any library, Christian classics, and must-read Christian biographies.

Early in my Christian life, I learned of Ruth Bell Graham through her collection of poetry, "Sitting By My Laughing Fire" and then her first book, "It's My Turn". Ruth was the child of missionaries who had a heart for the lost all the days of her life.
In this episode, I share Ruth's own influences as a child raised in China to a student at Wheaton College to the wife of renown evangelist, Billy Graham.
If you've never met Ruth Bell Graham, it is my privilege to introduce you to a woman of prayer and the Word. I want to grow up to be like her, and you will want to too!

Do you want your children to know Jesus personally? Then, read the biographies of people who were personally acquainted with him.
Dr. Lyle Dorsett joins me in this episode to talk about Christian biography, and the power it has to form us and introduce us to Christians who have gone before us.
