HOPE not hate has today released its annual State of Hate report, titled ‘Pessimism, Decline and a Rising Radical Right’.
It is *the* go-to place for analysis of the far right, growing trends, fresh investigations and up-to-date profiles of all the key figures and groups. There’s nothing else out there like it.
On this episode of the podcast, Nick and Joe go over the broad takeaways from the report before having an in depth discussion on the topic of the growing Radical Right influence in the Conservative Party. This is an important story which reflects the growing toxicity in mainstream politics. The pair talk about where this group has come from, what it exists to achieve and how big an influence it, and its associated media environment, has on our politics.
To close, they touch on two other stories, the first is a new investigation into a member of the Patriotic Alternative splinter group, The Homeland Party, who is Chair of a Community Council near Dundee. The other is a disturbing article into the extremism of a far-right commentator named Steve Laws.
Both blogs are linked in the comments, and should be approached with caution.
Cheers,

On Thursday 23rd November, a 49-year-old Irish citizen, originally from Algeria but who had lived in Ireland for 20 years, committed a heinous knife attack on children at a primary school in Parnell Square East in Dublin.
Quickly, far-right and anti-migrant activists and agitators turned to social media, spreading a range of misinformation about the attack, including that the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant.
Within hours Dublin was ablaze, as rioters set police cars, buses and a tram alight and looted shops, causing over an estimated €10 million of damage.
But how did this happen? Is the Irish far-right larger and stronger than previously thought? And how do antifascists and Irish society more broadly respond to such a violent outburst?
To discuss this, and events in Dublin in more detail, we welcome the historian and author, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, onto the podcast.
N.B. - During the course of the podcast, "The Diggers" are mentioned at one point. This ought to have been "The Levellers".

On Armistice Day, 2000 far right activists and football hooligans descended on London under the guise of "defending" the Cenotaph from pro-Palestine demonstrators.
10 days ago, Britain's hooligan chat groups were filled with the usual discussion of football and beer. But they quickly mobilised as the (now former) Home Secretary Braverman branded pro-Palestine demonstrations as "hate marches", and as the The Daily Mail and Douglas Murray suggested the Cenotaph was under threat. All this coupled with Tommy Robinson's return to X, and his calls for a new anti-Islam far right street movement.
The result: chaos on the streets of London, as far right activists and football hooligans battled police and attempted to confront Pro-Palestine demonstrators.
HOPE not hate had teams on the ground and embedded within the far right all day, feeding live information about what exactly was going on and where.
HOPE not hate's CEO, Nick Lowles, makes an appearance on Radio 43 to give us the full run-through of the precursors to the carnage, how the itself day panned out, and what the backlash has been for those on the march and for Tommy Robinson himself.
With over 100 arrests already and presumably many more to come as police trawl through footage, it's looking as though Saturday will go down as another costly moment for Britain's far right.

On this episode, Nick and Joe discuss what is a very fast-moving situation.
The far-right are mobilising in London this weekend in opposition to a demonstration calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Near the centre of this is Tommy Robinson, who was allowed back onto X (Twitter) on Monday, and who has mentioned repeatedly that he’s wanted to get the English Defence League (EDL) back together.
Home Secretary Braverman’s recent comments calling pro-Palestine demonstrations “hate marches” have contributed to firing up an already hostile, and increasingly energised, mass of the former far-right street movement.
Along with worrying rumblings from the underground, the literal Nazis in the National Front look set to make their Remembrance Day march to the Cenotaph as usual, whilst somehow avoiding being labelled a “hate march” by our Home Secretary…
It’s a muddied picture, but Joe helps us to get to grips with what we should expect to see.
Thanks for listening

In some breaking news, HOPE not hate researchers have unearthed the deeply alarming views of the Conservative candidate for London Mayor, Susan Hall. Hall has liked posts endorsing Enoch Powell, Islamophobic tropes about Sadiq Khan, supported the myth that the 2020 American election was stolen from Donald Trump and expressed a disdain for the press and democracy.
But what ought to happen now?
On this episode of Radio 43, Nick and Georgie sit down to discuss the ins and outs of the shocking Susan Hall revelations, what the party needs to do now and how this case sits within the broader context of concerning Conservative Party incidents.
HOPE not hate has been banging the drum about the scale of anti-Muslim views within the Conservatives for many years, and Hall’s candidacy suggests that little is being done to make sure that those in the party with deeply worrying views are rooted out.
As part of this campaign, we have written to the Chair of the Conservative party, Greg Hands, presenting a dossier of evidence and stating that the party must suspend Hall and undertake a full investigation into her.

Welcome to episode 46 of Radio 43.
This episode takes a similar form to the last one, in that it serves as a deep-dive into one particular topic: anti-migrant demonstrations.
There’s no getting away from the fact that this has become a really unifying focus for the far right this year.
HOPE not hate has been monitoring closely, and there’s been over 60 anti-migrant demonstrations that have taken place on town streets and at temporary accommodation around the country in 2023. But where did this all come from? How far is government rhetoric and policy encouraging the far right on the ground? How are local tensions being exploited by far right activists? And to what extend is the media helping to increase divisions?
On this episode, Nick is joined by Director of Research Joe Mulhall and Director of Policy Rosie Carter, to pick through the features of a trend of activism that has been a real concern throughout 2023.
Thank you for checking out the podcast.

As HNH researchers have discovered, Tommy Robinson's been living a life of luxury - all the while sending out emails begging supporters for cash - whilst running roughshod over the law and breaking a court order by releasing a libellous film.

Hello! It’s been a mere 5 weeks since the last episode, and there’s much to dig into.
Joe has managed to tear himself away from his new hobby in British rivers to sit down with Nick for a discussion on the massive split in Patriotic Alternative. The two examine the context, the split itself and its fallout, and try to get to the bottom of some recent claims by other antifascists that the breakaway faction, despite being less than a month old, is now the most dangerous group in the UK.
Elsewhere, it’s polling day tomorrow (May 4th) and as usual the far-right is in a dismal state electorally. The pair look at the various parties fielding candidates and work out where the far-right goes next after yet another embarrassing showing.
Finally, today HNH researchers have sent a dossier to the authorities showing what we believe to be electoral malfeasance on the part of Britain First’s Paul Golding. Joe gives us a summary of what’s in the dossier and what the repercussions could be…
As always, thanks for listening!

Right, it’s been ages since the last Radio 43, very sorry!
It has been a ridiculous start to the year and Nick and Joe have struggled to find the time to sit down to record, but they’re back now with a BUMPER edition of the podcast.
On this week’s episode, the pair take a look back over the previous 3 months to pick out some trends and developments on the far-right. With so many anti-migrant demonstrations going off around the country, it’s been a worrying time.
Elsewhere the two discuss an extraordinary story from State of Hate 2023 about an anti-Islam group that has been operating at the heart of the British establishment for over a decade, before turning to two new HNH investigations: one into the “Hull Hitler”, Alek Yerbury, and the other a disgraced, and surely soon to be ex-, UKIP councillor.
There’s a load to speak about.
Thanks for your patience whilst we’ve been away!
X
Nick and Joe are back a week later than planned because poor old Joe lost his voice. But thankfully it has returned just in time for him to belt out some carols and, more importantly but less seasonally, talk about the far-right on this podcast.
It’s a show full of big stories this week as the pair begin by treading familiar podcast terrain: the continued links between Patriotic Alternative and the extreme far-right, in this case the Nordic Resistance Movement - a properly nasty bunch.
Next they move onto a big story that came courtesy of HOPE not hate: a fascist in the Tory Party down in Kent. They keep turning up there, though heavens knows why…
HOPE not hate torpedoed another nazi Blood & Honour gig, this time up in Bathgate in West Lothian. It was going to be a big one, but it ended the same way as all the others - with lots of dejected nazis and a good chunk of money down the drain too.
Finally the pair talk about Kanye “Ye” West’s disturbing appearance on the Alex Jones show and his continued descent into vicious and violent antisemitism, before discussing no-platform and Twitter more broadly.
If we don’t get another one in before the end of the year then have a great Christmas, thanks for listening.

Following a longer hiatus than planned, Nick and Joe are back with a new episode of Radio 43.
The far-right terror attack in Dover has raised a lot of questions, not just about the far-right politics of the terrorist himself, but of the state of public anti-migrant discourse in Britain. We must talk of about this man’s engagement with far-right figures and his radicalisation, and deal properly with this pipeline. But we must also ask what it says about the party of government that just a few days prior to the attack, the Home Secretary used established far-right rhetoric in speaking about an “invasion of our southern coast”?
Elsewhere, there’s yet ANOTHER National Action-linked activist in Patriotic Alternative. How many is that now? The numbers keep adding up. Oh and this one is also a “Reverend” in a white supremacist cult. There will be more sweaty armpits amongst PA activists as the talk of proscription grows…
Finally, the pair look at Tommy Robinson’s most extreme article ever, in which he’s openly antisemitic and engages with racist pseudoscience. Tommy’s COVID conspiracy journey has ended up in a nightmare of antisemitism.

It’s been a hectic time at HOPE not hate as we’ve just successfully netted one of our biggest fish in recent years; a right whopper by the name of Andrew Tate.
Tate is a violent misogynist who shot to fame on social media, especially TikTok, projecting a supposedly glamorous lifestyle of fast cars and wealth whilst simultaneously using his platform to share his disgusting views towards women, as well as his homophobia, ableism and Islamophobia.
On TikTok, Tate content has been viewed many billions (that’s not a typo) of times, and he has developed a cult-like following of impressionable young men and boys. Large numbers of young men have been consuming his content and he is widely celebrated in those circles as having brought back “traditional masculinity”.
Tate has links to various significant far-right figures, including Tommy Robinson who he knows from growing up in Luton. And his combination of gateway “influencer” content, extremely violent, degrading and controlling behaviour towards women, his racism and his far-right connections marked him out as a real danger to young people online.
This is why, last week, we launched a campaign against Tate which, in the space of less than a week, saw Tate looks many millions of followers on social media as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok all shut down his accounts and began to scrub Tate content off their sites.
This was a huge win for HOPE not hate, and we couldn’t have done it without our supporters, vast numbers of whom joined our call to the tech platforms to take action. We send a big thank you to you all.

A bumper episode.
Stephen Lennon's crusade in Telford continues apace. But while "Tommy Robinson" loudly protests horrific instances of grooming, he has overlooked how close to home abuse often is.
Elsewhere the gang discuss the pro-genocide "joke" of Jimmy Carr, as well as further convictions for nazi terrorists, who were planning novel terror, with 3d printed guns, and bomb-making manuals disguised as Minecraft guides.
The three come together to discuss:
Get your ears on the antifascist antidote.
Stephen Lennon's financial gameplaying looks like it will finally catch up with him.
Asset after asset is being revealed to officials as a result of research done by antifascists at HOPE not hate, and with the support of our donors. You.
Surely it's only a matter of time now before Stephen's houses get given to those he has victimized? Tick Tock, Stephen.
Elsewhere the Tory's are embroiled in a rolling islamophobia crisis, citizenship is being snatched as a part of the government's authoritarian swerve, and the South-End by election sees more no hopers line up to splurge their deposits in exchange for another go on the public humiliation.
Roxy and Nick, have lost Joe this week to some other work. Instead, Liron has been called in to explain the authoritarian government rumblings that he is working closely to observe and challenge.
This and still more are covered in an episode that you need in your digital players and or download folder, immediately.
Have a listen, like and subscribe, send it to a comrade, and enjoy it
CW for some discussion of sexual violence.
Stephen Yaxley Lennon, Tommy Robinson, has been preparing a documentary looking at sexual crimes in Telford.
While the scourge of sexual violence against women is disgusting, it's clear that Tommy's motives are less than pure. Why is it that Britain's noisiest islamophobe would want to focus solely on the crimes of Asian individuals and gangs, as opposed to the bigger picture of violence that afflicts all communities?
Tommy's record of associations with violent misogynists and abusers is well documented, and his denunciations of them have proven weak, inconsistent, or non existent.
Joe, Roxy and Nick look in depth at this, and provide an overview of the other important goings on with the far right in early 2022.
Roxana Khan Williams met with Nick Lowles to discuss Nick's work investigating Stephen Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson) and how we believe we can put a stop to his shocking attempt to escape justice.
We need your support to win this case- and potentially, together, we could set back the far right by decades.
Prod. Jake Pace Lawrie
Nick, Roxy and Joe, come together to assess the most recent goings on in the sad social lives of the far right. Britain First have lots of possibly made-up signatures on their anti RNLI, pro-drowning, campaign, Ben Raymond is doing bird (8 years of a custodial that even an abolitionist might like to celebrate), the Reclaim Party has got into bed with a real crank, and 'Fenek Solere' of PA seems to have stopped publishing entirely- off the back of our Patriotic Alternative report.
Unfortunately, despite the pratfalls of the idiotic far right, and major wins by antifascists, the new migration bill has, at the flick of a pen, thrown the legal status of 6 million British citizens into question. It is another deeply worrying act emanating not from the fringe far right, but instead from the mainstream of politics- in this case the ruling Conservative party.
Ben Raymond thought of himself as one of the most important figures on the British far right. Raymond believed himself to be untouchable by the law and a genius of political organisation. An academic, an intellectual, a propagandist, all of it was a fiction, none of it was true, Raymond was an artist of moderate talent.
It was only a matter of time, thanks to the huge effort by antifascists, and on this occasion with thanks also to state investigators, that Raymond was put behind bars. many of his old colleagues will be please to see him, several of them are there, after all, because of his reckless advice. It will be quite a reunion.
Roxy, Nick and Joe come together to discuss the Patriotic Alternative report just published by HOPE not hate. We have the inside story from the PA event, and much much more.
PA held their annual conference some weeks ago. But before the hors-d'œuvre could be quaffed, antifascists had leaked the location. Mark Collett had bungled things once again, and no amount of Sam Melia's sucking up could fix things. Events organisers wanted them out. Pour little lad Mark is in a pickle.
While PA tried to palm it off as inconsequential - in reality the entire, event was an unmitigated disaster for PA and it's 60 quid a piece, out-of-pocket membership. Collett may need to sooth his nerves with a new superhero costume.
Who would want to be exposed as a fascist to their work colleagues, friends and family? Don't do it kids.

Joe and Tricky Nicky Spooner meet to discuss the far right's crass reaction to the terror incident in Liverpool. Despite knowing nothing the gamut of far-right 'thinkers', 'citizen journalists' and 'activists' have projected their accumulated ignorance onto the attack with the hope that this will be the sort of misery that will validate their worldview once more.
Alan Leggett (who has adopted the powerfully descriptive moniker 'Active Patriot UK') is discussed in all his mediocrity. Apparently raising funds, once more, and again, for another attempt at relevancy.
Elsewhere 'Identity England'; a niche coterie of thinking-man's rejects from the global identitarianism movement, raise a wilted flag at oblivious police stations. But really are only mentioned here for the most keen of antifascists. There were four of them - if we count the photographer.
Please share, like and subscribe - help build R43 - we have some huge news on the way.
Roxana, Nick S and Joe together again on the barricades of 21st century antifascism.
Like, subscribe and share. x
Nick Spooner sat down with the activist-author Chris Saltmarsh, to discuss Chris's new book Burnt, and to look at the impending climate breakdown and its effects on every one of us. In many ways Climate Breakdown, and denialism, intersects with wider antifascist issues
This new episode of Metapolitics is the third in a series looking at broader cultural questions around the struggle to defeat racist and fascist ideology today.

Black Metal Resistance
Listen to Episode Two of Metapolitics -
Heroes of the Terraces
Presented by Nick Spooner

Nick and Joe return (Roxy is off today) to discuss PA's most recent embarrassment, this time, and again, it's caused by their leader Mark Collett- the number one hiking enthusiast on the far right.
Collett put his hiking boots away for a short moment to broadcast an especially putrid little stream where he blamed the recently murdered David Amess for his own death at the hands of a killer.
The disgusting comments seem to be motivated by an attempt to retain the members of PA who are understandably frustrated that Collett is moving the languishing far-right organization into a sports club, rather then an electoral force or something more edgy.
Despite the discontent of the PA rank-and-file, antifascists everywhere are extremely grateful for Collett's outdoorsy streak- which is allowing us to focus on other things, while the erstwhile ubermensch clock up some seriously underwhelming stats on Strava.
Elsewhere GB news has platformed some more hideous ideas, signalling a willingness to turn right, and very disturbing news has emerged that a "Proud Boys Britannia" member is guilty of multiple rapes.
Roxana and Nick discuss the murder of David Amess, a killing that will be remembered as another example of violence being used to harm our democratic freedoms. The far right responded gleefully to the killing, instantly spotting an opportunity to weaponize it against minorities. In reality the far right only cares for nurturing their own hatred, as their responses in the wake of the murder of Jo Cox also demonstrated.
Despite this solemn episode, Roxy and Nick also find time to confront the falling star of Stephen Yaxley Lennon, a man who it is difficult to imagine was once a rising talent. With his life in disarray, and now with an embarrassing stalking ban to his name, Stephen Lennon could be seen ranting his new line in conspiracy theories to a bemused crowd of xenophobes in Dresden.
The R43 gang go over the big stories of the past week and a bit.
Namely - a Tory Councillor has been shunned by his party because HnH discovered he was involved in the fascist group Patriotic Alternative.
If you want to know about this, and more stories to help you confront 'the fash', or perhaps you are the fash, and just like to hear someone else take an interest in your pathetic trajectory to insignificance, please download, like and subscribe.
Thx x.
It's Tory Party Conference. A spellbinding time for everyone. But the British far right are instead obsessed with their own irrelevance, exploiting fears and failing to win popular support again and again, with a little help from antifascists everywhere.
In conjunction with the launch of the new, bumper, Heroes of the Terraces publication from HOPE not hate, Nick Spooner and Jake Pace Lawrie return with a new episode of Metapolitics, the series that looks at the cultural aspects of the far right and antifascist resistance today.
In this episode we tackle the growing challenge for the heart of football - speaking to Shaista Aziz, Liron Velleman, and Charlie Hyman, three voices that seek a game that is more inclusive for all.
Roxana, Nick and Joe meet up on the internet this week to discuss Steve Laws' dodgy defense of his own dubious credential, Nadine Dorries' big bigotry, and fan of the show Sam Melia gets a shout out as third in command of the sinking PA ship, nazis ahoy!
Roxy Joe and Nicholas are back for another bumper episode of R43.
Today we have some interesting and unusual stories:
-Steven Laws: Turtle liker, becomes a low-tier guest on bottom tier radio. Big news on the ever-disreputable, Murdoch owned, TalkRADIO.
-Pass around the Vitamin E[mpathy], there is a serious deficient party in power, making refugees lives harder then they need to be..
-Massive EPIK hack leaves racists worldwide with even clammier palms and even more restless nights. Booo hooo :(
It's a sad day to be a far right activist. :(
Videogames and airsoft provide a bit of light relief, from otherwise just an endless experience of failure. But still you dust off your jackboots, and you schlep down to Croydon, hoping to show the minorities your white pride. But then... your leader simply... fails to show. up.
This episode of Radio 43 charts more pathetic showings for the far right and their rabble, as well as the nazi given a punishment of reading Shakespeare, and other unfortunately true real life crime tales.
Roxy is off this week (definitely not watching PA through some comedy large binoculars).

We are pleased to host a recording of the book launch of Luke Cooper's new book on the rise of Authoritarian Protectionism.
The 21st century has not seen the triumph of democracy that some predicted but instead, in many cases, a turn towards authoritarian forms of government as an imagined solution to the many crises facing humanity.

Roxy is on much deserved holibobs leaving Joe and Nick to hold the Radio 43 fort against the backlash of wild-eyed antixvaxers, Taliban apologists, and just bloody nasty people.
Get this in your ears, and leave a 5* review immediately.
HOPE not hate have launched a new publication, looking at the Heroes of the Terraces, those heroes of antifascist and antiracist struggles in football that have helped to challenge hate both on the pitch and off.
Matthew McGregor and Matthew Collins discuss the publication, and offer an overview of its contents.
Roxy, Nick and Joe discuss the horrendous week that has passed, the three discuss the revelation that a double murder of two women last summer was influenced by a forum linked to the nazi-satanist o9a, and meanwhile we mourn the misogyny inflected hate crimes in Plymouth, that led to the worst mass shooting the UK has seen in 10 years.
A grim insight into the far right, and it's overlap with misogynist ideology; this is not the usual upbeat episode about far right gaffes. Please listen with caution.
Come one, come all for another week of Radio 43 intelligence updates. In brief:
Patriotic Alternative have kindly taken photographs of their membership and posted them on the internet for us, a yearly affair that is very useful and to be much encouraged by antifascists.
Sam Melia (an ex member of the Nazi gang National Action) has been courting local media by polishing a monument... to the 39-45 war... against the Nazis.
We look at the significance of mainstream hate in provoking 70+ racist incidents by the far right aimed at migrants housed in temporary accommodation.
Like, subscribe, and leave a review… even a bad one helps us.

The Radio 43 team are back for a landmark, special tenth report.
Stephen Yaxley Lennon (Tommy Robinson) has found himself lumbered with a HUGE bill to pay for damages due to libel he inflicted on a child who was being bullied at school, while the post-lockdown, anti-lockdown, street protestors continues to mingle with racist conspiracy theorists and organized far-right elements.
Leave a review. Like and Subscribe. Send us questions, suggestions, and mocking references to Mark Collett's shorts.
Roxy has disguised herself in a BLM tshirt and gone deep cover in the fascist far right. Under the binoculars were the very easily surveilled Patriotic Alternative.
Patriotic Alternative meanwhile were coping very hard with last weeks meme- defending their totally adhered to prohibition on boozing, coming out hard against dry grain snacks, and mocking fellow fascist, Mark Collett's, very silly shorts. Sam Melia (former National Action activist) even wanted to share that he can hold his bowel movements for days when out hiking with his fellow ubermensch. Nice work Sam!
In other news Anjem Choudary is again allowed to broadcast hate, but will certain journalists be stupid enough to amplify it? Katie Hopkins has fallen foul of Australia's tough immigration system. Farage is GB news's new old ham. And the conspiracy theorist milieu causes more vacuous chaos on the streets of London.
Patriotic Alternative are a nasty bunch of far-right, and as such have fallen into acrimony as they are wont to. Two key organizers have departed the mountaneering team-cum-nazi party with one of the departed being mocked by his former comrades for his mental health on the way out.
While the far-right finds itself in a tangle, the mainstream right are desperately trying to untangle themselves from a racist fanbase that they have riled up. Having stoked distrust as to the motives of England to take the knee against racism, some in Parliament are SHOCKED to find themselves reaping what they have sown.
Roxy, Nick and Joe invite you to listen, subscribe and write a review to Radio 43.
"When you do things like that about a town like Batley, I've kept really quiet, but I'll tell you something, the far right went down in my estimation when they said that.
We have not resorted to that, but I'll tell you, you can tell them now if they're listening to Radio 43, we're still fighting for the antifascist victory, and the far right have got to go to the ballots and get something, and...
and... I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them, love it!"

The 'No Platform' tactic has important origins in the antifascist movement.
But what happens when the antifascist tactic is broadened to include the many non-fascist actors who may be deemed to have used hate speech? And what are the unintended consequences of this broadening tactic upon the fascists and other far right?
HOPE not hate's Senior Researcher Joe Mulhall interviews David Renton on his forthcoming book: No Free Speech for Fascists: Exploring No Platform in History, Law and Politics.
The far right continue their shambolic campaign in Batley, finding very little traction amongst the community so far. It's starting to feel like they are in the race for the wrong reasons as Jayda Fransen waves around larger and larger crucifixes and denounces 'fake nationalists' but says nothing of note to the community she claims she wants to represent.
While we laugh at the far right's folly we are also reminded by two court cases that show how dangerous these ideas really are. An ex-UKIP member has been found guilty of ten counts related to terror and explosives, and the founder of System Resistance Network has also been found guilty of multiple charges.
In Batley, despite the attempts of the far right to sow division the local community has come together giving cause for hope.
This new series in the HOPE not hate podcast spotlights the work of Owen Jones, Director of Education, and committed activist against the far right.
Owen's work is at the coal face, travelling to communities in Town and Country that he has identified as at-risk for the spread of hateful ideology, based on our research teams findings.
Episode one is on the subject of Antifascist Geographies. Nick Spooner and Roxana Khan-Wiliams ask Owen what he sees across the country and where he sees signs of hope.
The Batley and Spen by-election on July 1st will see an absolute shower of far right filth descend on the good people of West Yorkshire. While they may argue on the details, they are all seeking to capitalise on division, and are desperate to promote their own brand. Jayda Fransen, Anne Maria Waters, and still more have come to town like a travelling horrorshow of grotesque characters. Even narcissistic hat-haver George Galloway wants in on the action.
Hear about all of their desperate, attention seeking plans here.
Tragically, the far right have become Radio 43's largest fan base so far.
One fringe figure wanted to feature so badly he made a list of foodstuffs for HnH to vet for racism. Meanwhile, the dwindling National Front, clearly with too much time on their hands, got in touch to offer a correction to last weeks show- a correction that, like their bizarre world-view, also proved to be false.
Join Roxy, Joe and Nick for a review of the insignificant numbers at an anti migrant demo in dover, an anti-lockdown demo that caused a shopping centre to.... lockdown, and scandal as ghastly 'cancel culture' sends ripples through the far right, as they try and cancel one another at a demo nobody heard of in Manchester.
Please, like, review, share and subscribe. xxx
Welcome back for another Intelligence Bulletin from Radio 43.
Roxana, Nick and Joe discuss the far right's cynical flag waving for both sides in the recent tragedies in Palestine and in Israel. The team then look ahead in some depth at to two upcoming demonstrations set to divide the attentions of the already fractious far right.
Nick Spooner is joined by Joe Mulhall to discuss the wide range of goings on in the far right; nazi trials, migrant refuge invasions, and conspiracy theorist platforms, as well as other rumblings that are worth noting for antifascists everywhere.
Unfortunately, there have been a few moments in the past week where mainstream political actors have also crossed the line into overt racism, Nick and Joe discuss Michael Fabricant's disgraceful comment, the vile antisemitic incident in Golders Green, and the publication of anti-traveler hate in an otherwise respectable newspaper.
Lockdown may have come and gone, but the tide of racist outpourings has continued throughout.
Share this episode so that we can build the politics of HOPE against hate.
Roxana is away on regular leave and will return shortly.
Please email producer [email protected] with tips and questions for the team.
This new series from HOPE not hate is a brief intelligence overview of far-right activity from the research team - designed to give antifascists the information they need to confront hate with hope.
Nick Spooner and Roxana Khan-Williams will be sitting down to talk to Senior Researcher Joe Mulhall to provide you with these brief, weekly updates on far-right tactics.
This first episode is an overview of the dire electoral outcomes for the far right in the 6th of May elections, with shambolic results for the politics of hate, these results should be welcomed by antifascists everywhere.
If you have a question for the team email the producer at [email protected].
With today being the deadline for voter registration, Roxana Khan-Williams, Liron Velleman and Nick Spooner got together to discuss the barriers to registering to vote and why young people should make sure they cast their vote at elections. HOPE not hate partnered with the NEU for the voter registration campaign, so Roxana also heard from the NEU's General Secretary, Kevin Courtney, on what they've been up to during the campaign.
If you're yet to register, get on over to the government website today: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
The MP David Lammy discusses the worrying new trends in the far right as highlighted in the State of Hate report for 2021. David introduces the key themes facing antiracists and offers suggestions of how to make Hope happen.
This week saw the launch of 'State of Hate: Far-Right Extremism in Europe' - a colossal report which explores the state of far-right extremism across Europe. Joe Mulhall, Senior Researcher at HOPE not hate, Simone Rafael of Amadeu Antonio Foundation in Germany and Daniel Poohl of EXPO in Sweden all met with HOPE not hate's Activism and Operations Officer, Afrida Chowdhury, to discuss what the new report -- made with help of antifascists across Europe -- tells us about the start of extremism in 2021.

While the number remains, thankfully few, younger and younger people are being pulled into the extreme far right, they are being groomed online, and sometimes initiating their own cells. This alarming trend is something that HOPE not hate are aiming to curb.
Signs of Hate is a publication from HOPE not hate that brings a greater awareness to teachers, that they may be able to identify radicalization, by giving them a knowledge of the shifting trends of imagery used by the far right.
Matthew McGregor, Campaigns Director at HOPE not hate, spoke with Patrik Hermansson, Researcher at HOPE not hate, Owen Jones, Head of Education and training at HOPE not hate, and Jackie, a subject teacher working just outside London, on this important issue.
Nick Ryan spoke with activist lawyer Pam Horowitz on her new book, and the life she spent with the activist in the civil rights movement - Julian Bond.
Holocaust denial continues it's ugly transmission, adapting even during an unprecedented health emergency.
Joe Mulhall spoke to the Council of Christians and Jews on the subject of the mutating shape of Holocaust denial today.
Nick Ryan spoke with activist and author Joel Goza on the history of ideas that deeply entrench racism in American life.
Joel is the author of America's Unholy Ghosts on racism in American faith and politics and is currently working on his second book Rebirth of a Nation: Reparations and Making an Anti-Racist America.
Campaigns and Operations Officer Afrida was joined by Joe Mulhall, Nick Lowles and Matthew McGregor to discuss the deep roots of yesterday's attack on American democracy.
This roundtable conversation is a reminder on the importance of combatting discrimination against muslims, worldwide.
HOPE not hate researcher Safya Khan-Ruf was invited to speak alongside Dr. Jennifer Phillipa Eggert, Cllr. Jas Athwal, Mufti Ahmed Peerbhai in a wide discussion on Islamophobia and anti-muslim hatred today.
The meeting was chaired by Yusuf Patel MBE, with thanks to London Borough of Redbridge, the League of British Muslims, U.K, and the NAZ legacy foundation.
Want to learn from the Biden for President digital team? We had a great session with them - and you can listen to the podcast here.
The Biden team faced off against the Trump campaign’s self-styled “death star” digital operation and won. They did it with innovative tactics, great content, and a lot of heart - from the candidate on down. But how did they approach their work? What worked well (and what didn’t)? And what can other campaigns learn from the stunning results - from fundraising, to reach, to organisation.
We heard from four of Joe Biden's Digital team who know the answers to those questions: Clarke Humphrey, Deputy Digital Director for Grassroots Fundraising, Sarah Galvez, Director of Social Media + Audience Development, Christian Tom, Director of Digital Partnerships, and Aalok Kanani, Digital Communication Director.
Want to learn from Joe Biden's campaign team? They faced online smears, sophisticated digital attacks, and social media companies who couldn't or wouldn't stem the tide of lies. HOPE not hate supporters heard directly from some of the team tasked with combating this wave of disinformation. Joe Biden's digital director Rob Flaherty, Becca Rinkevich, Director of Digital Rapid Response for Biden for President, and Timothy Durigan, Data Security Analyst at the Democratic National Committee told us how they approached their work, what worked, and we might be able to learn from their efforts.
If you want to know how Joe Biden beat Donald Trump, this podcast is for you. We talked to two of the Biden team about how they organised - and what we can learn. It’s a must-watch (and don't forget to tag anyone you know who does campaigning).
**Here’s all the background**
The Biden for President campaign faced a stiff challenge in 2020: how to mobilize people in such huge numbers that an incredibly rare political event could be propelled into being - the defeat of a first-term president. Added to that was added an unprecedented challenge: how to do that during a global pandemic. The answer was a new fusion of community organizing and digital organizing, using tried and tested strategies honed over decades, with innovative tools and tactics for a modern era of campaigning, marked by Covid-19 restrictions.
We heard from Joe Biden's Senior Advisor for Digital, Caitlin Mitchell, and Jose Nunez, the campaign’s Director of Digital Organizing on the strategies they applied, the successes they had, and the lessons they learned.
With the US heading to the polls in one of the most fractious elections ever, and many fearful about far right & militia violence, Nick Ryan speaks to former head of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, Heidi Beirich, about the scale of the far right threat facing us today.
https://www.hopenothate.org.uk/magazine/usa2020/
Following the publication of the EHRC report into antisemitism in the Labour Party, we're joined by Peter Mason of the Jewish Labour Movement, Jemma Levene from HOPE not hate, and the Labour MP Stella Creasy. They talked to our campaigns director Matthew McGregor about the report itself, and where the fight against anti-Jewish racism goes from here.
Campaigns director Matthew McGregor asks Jess Morales Rocketto the question everyone wants to know- "Will we win?" the coming election in the United States.
A community organiser in the USA for the National Domestic Worker's Alliance and Care in Action, Jess spoke with Matthew McGregor about the impending election that is really a battle for the future of liberal democracy in the USA.
Jess identifies the reasons for Hope, candidates that are offering real change to a bleak political landscape, and a transformed activist culture.
https://www.hopenothate.org.uk/magazine/usa2020/
Ruth Smeeth (Vice Chair of the Jewish Labour Movement) and Matthew McGregor (Campaign director at HnH) discuss Ruth's highly personal experiences of antisemitism in the Labour Party and the deep problems that have lead up to the EHRC's investigation.
The false QAnon conspiracy theory features aspects of ancient antisemitic narratives, its rise and spread across the globe has also seen its transformation into ever more virulent, localised forms. This should be alarming to antifascists everywhere.
A major new piece of research from Gregory Davis and David Lawrence is discussed and read here by Joe Mulhall.
Journalist, Author and Playwright Paul Mason spoke with Joe Mulhall about the recent prosecution of the Greek Neo-Nazi Party, their sudden rise, and what the significance of the verdict means for antifascists combatting resurgent fascism internationally.
Caleb Cain and Cynthia Miller-Idriss join Nick Ryan for a conversation about the far right online ecosystem, and discuss their mutual work in challenging it.
Joe Mulhall dives back into the HOPE not hate archive for the second in our new series, this time reading new work from Simon Murdoch looking at the Campaign Against Racism and Fascism, an important part of our movement. Simon investigates if the arguments between anti-racists and antifascists could better be resolved through a mutual understanding against the common enemy.
This compelling round table between three leading writers (including Hope not Hate's Joe Mulhall) is a useful insight into the origins and continued importance of race science.
With many thanks to the Wiener Library for allowing us to reproduce the recording here.
Juliana Rordorf details the many ways that free speech is unevenly distributed, and outlines a liberal approach for its protection that accounts for how the far right violates the speech of others. Central to this is the work of deplatforming hate.
Researcher Juliana Rordorf reads her first in a series of articles on the varying ways that the far right co-opts and abuses arguments around free speech.
In this first episode of a new series where we look at objects in the HOPE not hate archive, Joe Mulhall discusses one of the oldest publications we keep. The Hidden Hand was the newspaper of The Britons, a small, antisemitic group, that flogged it's shabby wares in the violently tumultuous interwar period.
Although marginal, with a small print run, the personalities around The Britons became some of the most influential propagators of antisemitic conspiracy theory in the UK, throughout the 20th century. They were one of the only British nationalist groups to ally with a tiny German party - the German National Socialists, long before the latter had risen to power.
This is the story of how even the most fringe ideas must not be ignored, else their poison spread.
Eric K. Ward grew up in Los Angeles. Coming up in a punk scene that was volatile and tribal. In the context of rising hatred Eric and his friends learnt that they had to fight hard for their values. This was the start of a journey that would bring Eric to his work today as an anti-racist and antifascist, in a world on the brink.
This interview was recorded before the situation in Portland reached the dangerous levels of conflict today.
Eric K. Ward is Executive Director of Western States Center and a Senior Fellow with the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Read Eric's recent article from the HOPE not hate magazine https://www.hopenothate.org.uk/2020/07/01/america-unite/
Joe Mulhall discusses the new report from Gregory Davis on the many failings of Bitchute. Bitchute is a video content platform that has hosted to terror videos from groups such as ISIS and National Action, as well as gaining huge numbers on conspiracy theory videos during the recent crisis.
The Uyghur crisis in western China has led to over 1 million – some upwards of 2 million – Muslim Uyghur people being interned in what the Chinese government calls "re-education" centres. They've steadily faced an erosion of their cultural and religious rights, forcible birth control and increasingly oppressive surveillance. Now a shrinking minority within their own lands, Sophie Richardson, China director of Human Rights Watch, speaks to HOPE not hate's Nick Ryan about what's really happening in Xinjiang Province
HOPE not hate's Joe Mulhall spoke with the authors of Reactionary Democracies. Aurelien Mondon and Aaron Winter's new book which challenges the idea that liberal democracy provides a consistent bulwark against racism. Arguing that popular notions of 'the people' justify the exclusion of others and the normalisation of racist ideas, the authors point to mainstream racism, islamophobia and anti-migrant sentiment coming from across the spectrum of mainstream politics as examples of how the threat is not just on the fringe, but often within the mainstream.
Aurelien and Aaron's ideas present a timely challenge to antifascists today.

Matthew McGregor, HnH Campaign Director, spoke with two MPs about their importance work combatting the extreme right. Both Stephanie Peacock and Stephen Doughty have contributed so much to the fight against extremism today, and have joined with HOPE not hate in arguing for a ban against the Order of the Nine Angles.
Matthew McGregor discusses with both guests why a ban of the nazi-satanist O9A makes sense, and recent events related to the findings of BBC Panorama, and the indictment of a US soldier who had plotted against their colleagues in the military.
Afrida pitched questions to Joe as a part of the Great Get Together, taken from Afrida, and the audience. This was the first of our live webinars.
How one soldier conspired to have his comrades attacked by terrorists, as a part of a nazi-satanist murder plot.
Rosie Carter discusses the important work of building communities that are resistant to hatred. She discusses the urban approaches that can lead to a better community in the wake of the pandemic with Will Jennings and Nick Malyan and later Rosie spoke with Kim Leadbeater of More in Common and the Jo Cox Foundation.
This work, of building communities, is crucial to building a world where hatred is unable to spread.
In this final episode of our Heroes of the Resistance series we review some of the most powerful parts of our previous interviews. Matthew McGregor discusses the story that most resonated with him, that of the Ulma family, who attempted to rescue a family of Jews, but were denounced. Anthony Silkoff of the Board of Deputies of British Jews reads his article on the Ringleblum archive, a collection of documents that was produced by the captives of the Warsaw ghetto.
Because homosexuality remained criminalised after the Nazis were defeated, many of the stories of LGBT persecution and LGBT resistance went undocumented, it's victims and heroes were at risk of prosecution if outed as gay.
Gad Beck's story of resistance is one exception to that secrecy. Gad, was both Jewish and gay, and therefore was thoroughly stigmatised by Nazi law, but nonetheless found ways to resist.
Josh Bradlow, Head of Policy at Stonewall, told us how Gad found his identity in resistance to the Nazis and how he would continue that tradition for the rest of his life.
Krystyna Skarbek was travelling outside of Poland when the country fell to the Nazis. In order to fight back after the occupation she threw her lot in with British intelligence offering her unique courage and skills to courier early reports back of the Nazi plan - Operation Barbarossa. Skarbek would go on to serve in three theatres of war and became one of the highest trained and most effective of British spies.
Clare Mulley, the author of A Spy Who Loved, tells us a short part of Skarbek's remarkable story.
Witold Pilecki, a resistance fighter in the Polish underground, was sent on a mission of great danger and crucial importance to the fight against the Nazis. Witold was tasked with the infiltration of a new camp, that there was scant intelligence on. That camp was Auschwitz. What Witold found there continues to be remembered today for its unimaginable horror, but at the time Witold's reports from inside the camp fell on deaf ears.
Pilecki's time in the camp was documented by Jack Fairweather in his book - The Volunteer. Jack tells Witold's story here.

Sonia Purnell discusses Virginia Hall, who she wrote about in A Woman of No Importance. Working for SOE Virginia was able to do what many of her male colleagues had tried and failed to do- she build a strong resistance network that was able to undermine fascist authority in Vichy France from below.

We spoke to Caroline Moorehead about her book A House in the Mountains, the story of four partisan women and their struggle against fascism.
On 19th of April 1943, armed with only a pistol and a lamp, 3 Belgian resistance fighters stopped a train destined for Auschwitz. Outgunned, they nevertheless were able to fend off the Nazi guards, and their heroism rescued 233 prisoners from almost certain death.
The history books remember the War of 1939-1945 as one of a clash between nations, but World War 2 was also fought from below. We remember the heroism of those who resisted even when they were occupied or ruled by imposibly cruel regimes.
Resistance in Europe took many forms, sabotage, espionage and armed uprising, but also non-compliance, industrial action and protest. Sometimes resistance was simply the courage and insistence on survival in the face of the Nazi plan to exterminate it's enemies..
Nick Lowles and Jemma Levene discuss their favourite stories from the new report, and tell us why they resonate with them today.
Matthew Collins spoke with some of the remaining heroes of the resistance. The Italian partisans he spoke with were messengers and fighters, saboteurs and agitators against Nazism and fascism on Italian soil. Now elderly, each and every one of the antifascists that Matthew spoke with said they would again suffer the pains they felt in their youth again today, if it was needed to see off a new far-right threat. Those that Matthew interviewed have dedicated their lives to helping teach children of the dangers of fascism as a part of the antifascist institution ANPI (the Alliance of Italian Partisans). Each and every one was a hero, with stories of incredible bravery against their cruel enemy.
Those interviewed are:
-Gino Boldini (RIP)
-Elsa Pelizzari
-Rosi Romelli
-Romano Colombini

Patrik Hermansson discusses the spread of conspiracy theories and denialism in the Coronavirus outbreak. Patrik discusses how the divergent theories related to the disease's development have shaped online, far-right spaces, leading to fractious conversations as conspiracy theorists catch the disease and get sick, or where competing theories contradict, and are forced to adapt.
The spread of these conspiracies is a good case study in how the far right uses misinformation and false narratives to spread it's hatred. Behind every conspiracy theory there is a conspirator, and too often behind the mask of 'them' there will lie a minority group- the object of their hatred.
The Covid 19 outbreak is an especially dangerous media environment, and we must be quick to resist these false narratives by working to build trust between vulnerable groups, the media and governments.
Matthew McGregor spoke with Rosie Carter regarding her work in tracking the changing attitudes during the Corona virus outbreak. Far from what you would expect in this gloomy period, Rosie's polling found a rise in optimism, at at time of desperate economic outlooks. Amidst rolling news coverage of the disastrous pandemic, certain key indicators have actually improved. But what's behind the numbers? HOPE not hate's measure of these attitudes, and our analysis of their direction is something with which every antifascist should be concerned.
"This is a pandemic, this is a virus it knows no boundaries[...] therefore we need an international response, not one that seeks to spread division and hatred" Sarah Owen MP.
With the contagion spreading internationally, the responses from governments have varied from the lacklustre to the authoritarian. Hard right politicians have ramped up nativist language and elements in the west and the east have sought to blame the other side for the outbreak. With Trump and others labeling the virus the 'Chinese Virus' the contagion has been invested with a racial identity in the minds of xenophobes. The implications are troubling for Chinese and East Asian people internationally.
Sarah Owen talks with us about how she thinks we can respond to this outbreak of hatred.
In this, the first episode in Metapolitics, a new strand of the HOPE not hate podcast that looks at the cultural fronts in resisting hate, we look at Black Metal Resistance.
Nick Spooner from HOPE not hate speaks with Kim Kelly and also George Parr about where this comes from and what antifascists both inside and outside of the subculture, can do to resist it.

Safya Khan-Ruf discusses the ongoing struggle to define islamophobia, and describes why its such a political issue. Nick Lowles talks on the recent media smears targetted against Qari Asim, and what really lay behind them.
In her speech Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP discusses the State of Hate, and the importance of HOPE not hate's work in confronting, exposing and campaigning against hate over the coming year.
Nick Lowles, CEO of HOPE not hate, sat down to discuss the neo-Nazi Satanist group the Order of the Nine Angles, and their promotion of terror in the digital space. The O9A have been linked to violent far-right groups such as Combat 18, the National Socialist Movement, National Action, Sonnenkrieg Division, Atomwaffen Division, and many more.
The leading light of the O9A, David Myatt, a man known by acquaintances as 'The Cat Strangler' because of his proclivity for animal torture, has consistently promoted human sacrifice and abuse in his writings. We are seeing the most extreme form of far-right ideology grow and spread in online spaces, where the fog of anonymity is being used to protect those who wish to recruit vulnerable young people to their poisonous ideology.
After countless instances of O9A propaganda appearing unnoticed as a factor in the radicalisation of terrorists, HOPE not hate are now calling for the government to act and for O9A to be proscribed.
In 2010 the BNP were able to run 338 candidates for Parliament, humiliatingly the 2019 general election saw them field just one - and he lost his deposit.
This trajectory marks a historical low-point for the traditional British far-right parties. But it doesn't tell us the whole story. With many of the far-right's ideas mainstreamed, and Brexit shifting the agenda from immigration, the attractiveness of the far right was severely limited by a Conservative party that drained the far right's traditional voter base. However the shift to a post organisational model, largely online, has allowed for an anonymous, amorphous mass of far right activists (making micro-donations of time and money) to continue the cause of far-right ideology, with little or no social cost involved and often with huge rewards.
While it is difficult to measure the effect of this new far-right in regards to shaping society, it is also unclear that the old antifascist methodologies can continue to be effective against the work they perform, mostly online, anonymous, and counter-cultural.
As antifascists we must adapt in order to continue to be effective.
HOPE not hate's Joe Mulhall and Patrik Hermansson discuss the circumstances that lead to the publication to their new book 'The International Alt-Right: Fascism for the 21st Century?'. The work of researchers Simon Murdoch, David Lawrence, Hermansson and Mulhall contributed to an important new collection that assesses the Alt-Right from a range of angles, all of which have been informed by a combination of infiltration and open research.

Every month a range of conspiracy theorists from across the political spectrum meet. They come together to share their doubts about everything from the moon landings to 9/11.
HOPE not hate and Community Security Trust have been observing the Keep Talking group for years. Our findings reveal how toxic these meetings truly are. Holocaust deniers, neo-nazis, Labour party members and trade unionists have all attended to share outlandish ideas.
Patrik Hermansson (HnH) and Dave Rich (CST) talk about the danger of conspiracy theories for progressive movements, and democracy, and their role in antisemitic and islamophobic racism.
25 years since the murder of over 8,000 unarmed Muslims in the days that followed the fall of Srebrenica, Bosnia, we discuss the latent prejudices that allowed for the rapid radicalisation of the former Yugoslavian people towards ethnic bloodshed and mass-murder of their neighbours.
Owen Jones, Head of Education and Training, talks of his experience of visiting survivors and campaigners for justice in Bosnia Herzegovina, and how he thinks of those events when he is teaching for resilience in British society, in schools and elsewhere. Owen discusses how the subtle, unconscious prejudices and discrimination can grow, if not rooted out, into horrific inter-communal violence.
When HOPE not hate heard of Generation Identity’s plans to try and prevent migrant rescue in the Mediterranean, we teamed up with antifascists across the world; including at Sleeping Giants and Avaaz, in order to stop the far right from risking lives.
When GI started a branch in the UK, we infiltrated and exposed their figurehead Martin Sellner making racist comments. We exposed their leaders for what they are, their extremist ties, and with other antifascists, we revealed two of their members were serving in the British Navy.
With GI in the UK finished, we look back on what a successful antifascist campaign looks like in the 21st century.
In the wake of the Second World War Jewish ex-servicemen returned from war on the continent to find the same hatred being spouted by Mosley's followers in the diverse communities of East London and beyond.
Utterly incensed and with the memory of war and the revelations of the holocaust still fresh in their minds, the decorated war heroes and rebellious youths of the 43 Group pioneered a new form of antifascist activism that made it difficult for Mosley to build an effective movement.

Race science underpinned many of the horrors of the recent past from slavery to genocide, but race science continues to exist in the academic space giving succor to far-right activists by justifying their racist worldview. Award-winning journalist Angela Saini spoke to us at HOPE not hate about her new book on the poisonous pseudo science and it's continuing return.
To mark the launch of the HOPE Education Fund our Director of Education and Training, Owen Jones, and Teri, a teacher in a secondary school that has worked with HNH before, discuss the need for resources to counter prejudice, and encourage empathy. This episode also features Robbie Mullen, our source from inside the proscribed Neo-Nazi group, National Action. Robbie talking about his own experiences at school.
Two murders this year have sent shocking echoes of Northern Ireland past: that of Lyra Mckee, attributed to the “New IRA”, and the other of Ian Ogle attributed to the UVF. With Brexit approaching the risk that Northern Ireland’s painful past could be back in the present is on the rise. Matthew McGregor talks with Matthew Collins about his recent interview with East Belfast figures close to the leadership of the UVF in East Belfast. These figures are in a position to give a real insight into the group’s motivations and plans. The two Matthews discuss how Brexit is uniquely placed to drive a wedge between communities.
A Long Read from our special on the climate crisis. Simon Murdoch investigates the politics of migration and its effects on Riace, Italy.

Senior Researcher Joe Mulhall interviews long term friend of HOPE not hate, and prominent scholar of the far right, Cas Mudde about his new book The Far Right Today. Mudde argues that we have entered a new 'wave' of far right development that can be seen across the world in the increased presence of far right ideas and parties in the mainstream of democratic countries.
Joe and Cas discuss the developments in the far right today, what drives them, and what can be done to address them. Mudde makes the explicit call to the mainstream right that they need to consider the limits of what and who they are willing to work with.
Kim Kelly is simply the coolest person on the internet. From taking on the metal scene's swastika tattooed underbelly, to teaching teens how to do labor organizing in the pages of Teen Vogue, Kim Kelly is giving hope to a generation of people shafted by the digital economy and hungry for a better world.Tucker Carlson's wet-potato-face has never been angrier.
Melissa Ryan speaks with activist Molly Conger about her work in reporting on events in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the fallout of the Unite the Right Rally in August 2017. While the events may seem in the past, for Molly and the people of Charlottesville - they are still unfolding. Trials continue, with extremists continuing to vent their frustrations about their own failings, and activist such as Molly continue to campaign effectively to build a more resilient community.

The fallout from 2016's historic vote to leave the EU has changed the UK’s political landscape. Over the last 8 years, HOPE not hate’s Fear and Hope reports have sought to understand Britain’s different ‘tribes’, groups of people with similar worldviews, and what drives those groups. Brexit’s turmoil has sparked a huge change in those groups, driven to a great extent by political distrust, which itself is also driving new spikes in intolerance. Rosie Carter's long-term research into the views of the nation reflects this by updating our 7 ‘tribes’ to better reflect the landscape of the UK. Matthew McGregor talks with Rosie about her findings and asks if there are ways to find Hope amidst the fear and the loss faced by so many today.
In a new essay commissioned by the Government's Commission for Countering Extremism, HOPE not hate's senior research Dr. Joe Mulhall argued that there is a new threat from the far right - the fact that they have modernised and moved into the mainstream. His essay is a must-read for antifascists who want to understand the changing nature of the threat posed by the far right. In this episode, Joe and Matthew McGregor chatted about some of the key themes in the piece.
Joe Mulhall and Matthew McGregor discuss new polling HOPE not hate commissioned from YouGov into Conservative party members attitudes towards Muslims. The results were shocking, but perhaps not surprising in that they reflect an older, overwhelmingly white, and middle class base in a society where Islamophobia is widespread. Gordon Brown makes a cameo appearance from an interview we recorded just after his recent speech on the rise of the far right.
Melissa Ryan speaks with Mutale Nkonde in a vital conversation about technology, representation and policy. The conversation covers a range of topics within Mutale’s research: Artificial Intelligence, politically motivated audio visual forgeries and deepfakes as well as the unevenly distributed effects of automation. In a cutting indictment of the tech industry’s ability to both repeat and amplify societal inequalities Mutale observes that Facebook has 146 staff working on Artificial Intelligence research, and not a single one of them is black. What this implies for a future shaped by technology, in the image of its creator, is a terrifying prospect.
Mutale is a policy analyst and fellow at Data and Society, and an advisor to Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.

Matthew Collins and Duncan Cahill discuss the absolute state of the British far right in the year of 2019. Eddy Butler's thirst for power and dislike of Stephen Yaxley Lennon puts him on the wrong side of his party boss Anne Marie Waters, Britain First are hit by a series of very embarrassing leaks, while Nick Griffin prepares for a party where the list of attendees is as note worthy as the list of non-attendees.
Joe Mulhall sits down with David Renton to discuss the subject of David's new book, the rise of a far right that is becoming increasingly detached from fascism. The two discuss the contemporary history of Donald Trump, Nigel Farage, and Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson) as well as exploring the possibilities for antifascists to confront this new radical right threat. David’s aim, in this book, was to describe how the far right and fascism could grow further and closer over time, and outlined some of the aims for the antifascist movement in a period where we may often be confronting people without any direct links to fascism, but who nonetheless advance a similar, divisive agenda.
Researchers Joe Mulhall and Patrik Hermansson discuss the European Elections and what they mean for the far right and the European project as a whole.
Today we have a special episode of CTRL ALT-RIGHT DELETE, where Melissa Ryan interviews David Neiwert a contributor at SPLC and staff writer at the Daily Kos. David has helped expose and challenge the far right in America for decades. David and Melissa discuss David's early encounters with extremists and what it is exactly that progressives can be doing, or doing better, to undercut far right organising.

Matthew Collins talks with Duncan Cahill about his new book 'Nazi Terrorists' a detailed examination of National Action, it's ideology, groups and individuals from inception to their recent downfall.
Twenty years on, HOPE not hate Chief Executive Nick Lowles reflects on the co-ordinated nail bombings by neo-Nazi David Copeland, the similarities between people caught up in extremism then and today, and the police failure to take far-right terrorism seriously.
HOPE not hate's Matthew McGregor talked to Mike Katz, the newly elected chair of the Jewish Labour Movement. Mike talked about the Jewish community's "absolute horror" about antisemitism in the Labour party, the personal impact it has taken on Jewish members of the party, and what he - and the JLM - want to see happen to tackle it.
Because Mike talked candidly about the nature of the antisemitic abuse Jewish Labour members have received, quoting from abusive messages they have been sent, this episode contains offensive words and phrases.
We’re able to finally tell the full story of how HOPE Not hate smashed the banned terror group National Action and foiled a murder plot. Matthew Collins was at the heart of our work. In part two of this two episode series, Matthew talked to Duncan Cahill about National Action activists who have been jailed thanks to information provided by our source Robbie Mullen.
We’re able to finally tell the full story of how HOPE Not hate smashed the banned terror group National Action and foiled a murder plot. Matthew Collins was at the heart of our work. In part one of a two episode series, Matthew talked to Duncan Cahill about National Action's background, Jack Renshaw's plot, and how Robbie Mullen saved two lives.
In this week’s roundtable discussion, Matthew, Joe and Safya weigh in on the public’s response to the terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, where 50 Muslims were murdered - and many more injured - by a white supremacist. Safya discusses the state of islamophobia, and hope, in the wake of the atrocity. Matthew discusses the upcoming local elections, and the electoral threat we face from various far right groups, while Joe discusses the two Brexit day demonstrations and the overlap between them.
In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War Joe Mulhall interviewed the eminent historian Paul Preston to discuss the causes and the course of the civil war. They touch upon the war vs revolution debate (including Orwell's true opinion of the POUM tactics), the real origins of Picasso's painting Guernica, and the gains made by the republic.
This is a part of a series of antifascist history podcasts which began with an earlier interview with David Renton about his research into the Anti-Nazi League.
Safya from Light on Anti-Muslim Prejudice interviews the author and editor Mariam Khan about her book 'It's Not About the Burqa' and they discuss representation of Muslim women, and the participation of Muslim women in spaces that they are often excluded from.
Campaign Director Matthew McGregor took us inside parliament to talk with Clive Lewis MP about the key issues facing Britain today. A divided Britain, the rise in anger on both sides of the Brexit debate, and confronting antisemitism in Labour.
For #InternationalWomensDay we had a very interesting talk with Dr. Christa Hodapp about her first-hand encounter with men’s rights activists, and how that led to her study of the online #manosphere as outlined in her book “Men’s Rights, Gender and Social Media.” The nostalgia, hostility to progress, and entitlement of the men’s rights activists overlaps with some toxic far-right worldviews. Christa is Gender Studies director at University of Massachussets Lowell.
A long read from the State of Hate report 2019, featuring new research by Simon Murdoch, looking at the Manosphere and organised offline groups of anti feminists.
Joe Mulhall sits down with Dave Renton to discuss the subject of Dave's new book- the conflict between the left and Far Right in the 1970s. Dave takes us across some of the key historical events that led to the colossal electoral defeat of the National Front in 1979, and how Rock Against Racism and the Anti Nazi League were able to play a part in the NF's downfall. Joe and Dave consider the implications of a revival of the ANL, as had been discussed in 2018, and give warnings for the new threat of a Far Right that is post-organisational, and no longer tied to the symbolism of 20th century fascism.
Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day we recorded a long read extract taken from our recent book Rewriting History: Lying, Denying and Revising the Holocaust. We outline the aims of the text and read the first chapter: from Protocols to Lizards: Holocaust Denial as Conspiracy Theory. This extract was read by Deputy Director of HOPE not hate, Jemma Levene.
Matthew, Joe and Safya weight in on the “yellow vest” demonstration that took place in London last weekend. Brexit remains halted, as the recent vote in Parliament on Theresa May’s deal ended in historic failure, though May and her government survived by the skin of their teeth. May is meeting with party leaders to determine a plan going forward, but we favour a new referendum to include the people in the process of deciding on a Brexit deal. The team debates Chris Grayling’s inflammatory claim that failure to leave the EU would cause a surge for the far-right. Washington also faces a deadlock. Trump does not care to end America’s record-breaking government shutdown, as he hopes to save face with his online MAGA base to secure funding for his $5.7 billion border wall - a pricey symbol of white nationalism. Nancy Pelosi still has cards to play as she throws a wrench in his plans by withdrawing his invite to the House to deliver his State of the Union address. And still, Trump smiles over the fast food on silver platters for the college football champions, the Clemson Tigers, due to cutbacks made at the White House.
Matthew Collins, Head of Intel at Hope not Hate, discusses the new approach of the British far right in their desperate bid for attention. In recent days various individuals have been seen wearing the hi-viz vests of the french anti-Macron protesters while abusing journalists and MPs outside of the UK parliament. Matthew warns that this is not a movement just another costume for a post-organisational, DIY, and donation thirsty bunch of ne'er-do-wells. The light of journalistic exposure has already begun to show some of the figureheads for what they really are. Duncan Cahill joins Matthew for this short episode that explains the significance of these protests, and provides an insight into some of the mucky motivations and murky characters (such as the nazi Nick Griffin) lurking behind the scenes.
From the rise of street protests, the radicalisation of UKIP to National Action trial, Nick Lowles and Matthew McGregor rounds up 2018!

We interrupt regular podcasting to discuss the hilarious and tragic leaks that HOPE not hate received over the weekend. Emails, messages and other evidence that Milo Yiannopoulos is outspending his earning powers and teetering on the brink of an embarrassing bankruptcy. Milo owes $20,000 to employees, and well over a million dollars to his own company, and has been forced to return his own Cartier wedding ring to settle a debt at the Jewelers. While it is a good time of year to revel in some heartwarming schadenfreude, the scale of Milo's earnings gives cause for concern, even if hubris has proved his personal undoing. Matthew McGregor and Joe Mulhall discuss the massive earnings and the ongoing fall of Milo, a far-right celebrity that is dangerously in debt.
In the media Islamophobia abounds, but along with the distribution of hate speech there is also the corrosive threat of misinformation spread about Muslims. Miqdaad Versi confronts both of these problems as the Muslim Council of Britain's Assistant General Secretary, he relentlessly pursues editors and journalists to maintain the highest standards of journalistic integrity. Safya Khan-Ruf caught up with Miqdaad to discuss his important and challenging work in taking on these journalistic biases.
This long read, written and recited by HnH senior researcher Joe Mulhall, describes the 200,000 strong march to celebrate the 100th year of independence in Poland (on November 12th 2018) which has become a rallying point for nationalists across the world. Marching alongside ordinary Poles were extreme neo-nazis, far-right flags from Forza Nuova and Generation Identity, as well as the leadership of the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) who helped facilitate the parade on behalf of fascist groups. Joe considers how this public display of nationalist unity represents the mainstreaming of extreme far-right views in Poland, and beyond.
This week’s roundtable discussion with Matthew, Safya and Joe delves into the turbulent nature of British and international politics. Matthew talks about the Fear, Hope and Loss report and how it explains why people in the UK voted for Brexit. Safya highlights the importance of fact-checking in the context of anti-Muslim prejudice and Joe announces HOPE not hate’s recent campaign which stopped convicted fraudster Stephen Yaxley-Lennon from speaking at one of the largest anti-Muslim think tanks in the USA. Safya’s discussion with Darren Byler, a lecturer at the University of Washington, focuses on the horrifying tales by the Uighur people of North-west China, who have been forced to enter mass re-education camps by the Chinese state.
We’re joined by Matthew, Safya and Joe where they delve into Stephen Yaxley-Lennon’s court case at the Old Bailey and his new-found international fame, the media’s role in providing a platform for Anjem Choudary and the series of explosives found the homes of high-profile, left-leaning, political figures in the US.
We caught up with Lisa Nandy MP for an interview in parliament ahead of a launch event for our new research - The Fear, Hope and Loss report. This groundbreaking research tracks the changing attitudes to migration in the post-Brexit landscape, insights that are crucial for anyone who wishes to mend fractured communities and build bridges between constituents.
Lisa draws on her own experience as MP for Wigan to contribute to a lively interview covering a range of relevant topics with our very own Matthew McGregor.
Stephen Yaxley Lennon, is not the messiah, he’s a convicted criminal, far-right activist, and Islamophobic extremist. This long read (by the Right Response team, and read by Matthew McGregor) explains exactly why he’s earned those labels. [this podcast was recorded earlier this year, prior to Stephen Lennon’s arrest and appeal]
HOPE not hate CEO, Nick Lowles makes his podcast debut to talk about the release of Tommy Robinson, aka Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, the media reaction, and how his newfound international celebrity impacts the threat of the far right.
