Sean Kipe and Jason Hoch have been making podcasts together for a while now and decided to make ‘How It All Went South’ because they realized they had collected so many stories between them over the years. They’ve worked together on some of the most popular and beloved podcasts out there – In the Red Clay, Fox Hunter, In the Land of Lies, and Drowning Creek.
Along the way, Sean and Jason would call each other constantly, always wanting to share even crazier and more wild stories…and they wanted to make them all… but, they got busy, and these take a really long time to make into a 10-episode series.
What do Sean and Jason talk about on How It All Went South?
How about renting a hitman (from a man named Guido), 1930s gangsters, runaway brides, lottery winners with totally bad luck, an eye drop killer, duck sauce killer, memory card killer, and unsolved cases.
They talk about psychics, body builders, shootouts, trailer park massacres and SOOOO much more.
And it ain’t a podcast about stories set in the South, y’all. It’s anywhere a crazy story happened… Sean and Jason talk about Alaska. Because, well, Sean is obsessed with Alaska.

Christopher Knight, known as the "North Pond Hermit," lived a solitary existence in the Maine wilderness for 27 years, from 1986 to 2013. He survived by stealing supplies from nearby cabins, committing hundreds of burglaries. Knight's secluded life ended when he was apprehended in 2013. His story gained widespread attention due to the extreme length of his isolation and the methods he used to survive, raising questions about solitude, survival, and the human need for connection.

The Fred Roehler case centers on the 1981 deaths of Verna Roehler and her son, Douglas Johnson, who drowned during a boating trip near the Channel Islands, California. Initially deemed an accident, suspicions arose due to inconsistencies in Fred Roehler's account and the discovery of head injuries on the victims. Investigations revealed substantial life insurance policies taken out by Roehler shortly before their deaths, providing a clear financial motive.
The subsequent trial featured expert testimony that challenged Roehler's version of events, particularly regarding the likelihood of the boat capsizing and the nature of the victims' injuries. Despite circumstantial evidence, the jury found Fred Roehler guilty of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case also brought to light the suspicious death of Roehler's first wife, further fueling the prosecution's narrative of a man driven by financial gain.

On January 13, 1982, Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the Potomac River shortly after takeoff from Washington National Airport. The Boeing 737-200, bound for Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a stop in Tampa, encountered difficulties during its ascent. The plane struck the 14th Street Bridge, a busy thoroughfare connecting Virginia and D.C., before plunging into the icy river. Of the 79 people on board, 74 perished in the crash, along with four motorists on the bridge.
The scene played out on national television with camera crews capturing the remarkable rescue of survivors from every day heroes and skilled helicopter pilots.
The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the probable cause of the accident was the flight crew's failure to activate the plane's anti-icing system, leading to a reduction in aerodynamic lift due to accumulated ice and snow.

David Paul, a prominent figure in the 1980s savings and loan crisis, was the head of CenTrust, a major financial institution in Florida. In 1990, federal regulators seized CenTrust Tower due to the bank's unsound financial condition, reporting significant losses. Paul was accused of draining millions from the failing institution, using the funds for personal expenses like life insurance premiums and lawn maintenance.
Paul faced two separate trials. In 1993, he was convicted on federal fraud charges for misusing company funds and faced a potential 350 years in prison. However, in 1994, he pleaded guilty to 29 criminal charges, admitting to stealing $24 million from CenTrust and concealing its financial problems from regulators. Despite his crimes, Paul was released from prison in 2004 and passed away in January 2022 at the age of 82.

They gained national recognition for their work in locating human remains. This led to her arrest and conviction on charges of evidence tampering, obstruction of justice, and lying to investigators.

The Station nightclub fire, during a 2003 Great White concert, killed 100 people and injured 230. The fire was started by pyrotechnics igniting flammable acoustic foam in the walls and ceiling. The club was overcrowded, with 462 people in a venue with a capacity of 404. The fire spread rapidly due to the lack of sprinklers and a series of other terrible circumstances, including fire alarms that weren't connected to the fire department, blocked exits, and a delayed response.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, multiple parties were held responsible. Club owners Jeffrey and Michael Derderian were charged with 200 counts of involuntary manslaughter, while band tour manager Daniel Biechele faced the same charges for setting off the fireworks. Biechele received a four-year prison sentence, and the Derderians each received suspended sentences and probation.
The Station fire led to significant changes in fire safety regulations, including stricter fire codes and a ban on pyrotechnics in certain venues. The tragedy also resulted in numerous lawsuits and settlements, with victims and families receiving $176 million in compensation. A permanent memorial was built at the fire site, and the Station Education Fund was launched to support children who lost parents in the fire.

Colleen Stan was kidnapped in 1977 by Cameron and Janice Hooker and held captive for seven years. During her captivity, she was subjected to extreme physical and sexual abuse, including being confined to a box for long periods. Cameron manipulated Colleen into believing that she was a slave and that an underground organization called "the Company" would harm her and her family if she tried to escape. He forced her to sign a "slavery contract" and subjected her to brutal punishments.
In 1984, Janice, consumed by guilt, confessed the truth to Colleen and helped her escape. Colleen returned home to her family and eventually revealed the details of her ordeal. Cameron was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including kidnapping and rape. He was found guilty and sentenced to a lengthy prison term. Despite the immense trauma she endured, Colleen survived and has shared her story to raise awareness about the horrors of human trafficking and abuse.

In 1989, a man named Alexi Indris-Santana was accepted to the prestigious Princeton University based on not only his intellect but also his incredible back-story of being a self-educated ranch hand with a 1410 SAT score. The school was so taken with Santana, that they agreed to defer his enrollment one year so that he could care for his sick mother.
The catch? – the man wasn’t caring for anyone; he was in prison. And his name was not Alexi Santana. It was James Arthur Hogue, a master conman who had fooled even the brightest minds at Princeton. It would be years before anyone there knew Hogue’s real identity, and his past full of lies and deception was unraveled – even then it was all by chance.

Jason discusses the Friendly murders that took place in Palm Springs, California in 1978. The victims were Edward and Sophia Friendly, a wealthy couple with ties to prominent families, and their maid, Francis Williams. The murders were particularly gruesome, with all three victims shot in the head at close range.
The initial investigation focused on Edward Friendly's business dealings, but later shifted to Sophia's strained relationship with her children, Edward Hutton and Sophia Hutton. Sophia had amended her will to disinherit her children after they contested her control over a San Francisco townhouse. The inheritance hinged on whether Sophia or her ex-husband, Curtis Hutton, died first. Curtis was terminally ill at the time of the murders.

Jason and Sean discuss the case of Jessy Kurczewski, who was convicted of murdering her friend and caretaker, Lynn Hernan. Hernan was found dead in her home, initially thought to be a drug overdose, but toxicology reports revealed a fatal dose of tetrahydrozoline, the main ingredient in eye drops.
Kurczewski was suspected due to her suspicious behavior and criminal record, and further investigation revealed that she had been stealing from Hernan and had made inconsistent statements about Hernan's death. Even after being convicted, Kurczewski continued to try to manipulate the case by writing a letter from prison instructing a friend to forge documents and create a fake audio recording to make it seem like Hernan had committed suicide.
