Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 12: Hello Sailor!
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the odd gleeful tangent.
This episode’s special guest is Welsh man-mountain John Pierce Jones, who played Arthur The Sailor in the iconic Blackadder II episode, Money. John talks to us about his career as a bilingual TV, film and theatre actor, and about all the fun he had working and socialising with the Blackadder team. He also mentions the time he borrowed co-star Robert de Niro’s on-set trailer and ate all his fruit.
This time around, our scene stealer is veteran actor Frank Finlay, who cut a memorably scary figure as the titular character in the Witchsmeller Pursuivant in the first series. We take a brief look at his illustrious career, recall how he ended up stranded in the wintry wilds of Northumberland after recording the episode, and offer a time-saving tip for any listeners who are thinking of summoning the devil in the comfort of their own homes.

Episode 11: Up Diddly Up!
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the odd gleeful tangent.
Our special guest in Episode 11 is Mark, aka @pitchblacksteed, who is the brains – and the heart – behind the longstanding King Of Blackadder fan community on Twitter. Mark talks to us about his enduring love for Blackadder, the rewarding interactions with fellow fans from all over the world and the endless fun that comes from applying Blackadder quotes to real-life situations.
And who better as a scene stealer than a man who can “give multiple orgasms to the furniture just by sitting on it”: Squadron Commander, the Lord Flashheart, played by the much-missed Rik Mayall. We compare the WWI fighter ace with his cross-dressing ancestor from Blackadder II, identify possible signs of narcissism and discuss why Rowan Atkinson deems this the performance of Rik’s career.

Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 10: Ten Shun!
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the odd gleeful tangent.
As the title suggests, our tenth episode has a military theme as our friend Kevin Brown – formerly a lowly Lance Corporal in the British army before moving to Canada to scale the dizzying heights of podcast fame – drops in on our squalid bit of line to talk about Blackadder Goes Forth and how accurately it portrays military life.
This time around, our Scene Stealer is Warren Clarke, who gave a memorable performance as Amy’s pig-loving father Mr Hardwood in the penultimate episode of Blackadder The Third. We take a look at his long and varied career as a character actor, how he ended up hamming it up on the Blackadder set (pun intended) and how Les Dawson was an unlikely source of inspiration.

Episode 9: A Comedy History Jem (Part Two)
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the odd gleeful tangent.
Our ninth episode concludes our two-part interview with Jem Roberts, author of The True History Of The Black Adder, who talks to us about writing and researching his favourite book (and ours!) – with input from virtually everyone of note in the Blackadder universe.
This time around, our Scene Stealer is the late and much missed Robbie Coltrane in his role as the phrasmotically pompous Dr Johnson in Ink & Incapability, the episode that topped our Newbie list poll. We also look at other memorable roles that Robbie has brought to life and demonstrate how to single out his laugh in a studio audience.
As ever, there are lashings of trivia, listener messages and more audio clips than you can shake a stick at!

Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 8: A Comedy History Jem (Part One)
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional tangent.
We kick off episode number eight with a Scene Stealer feature on Peter Cook, who lost his head in the very first outing of The Black Adder – but not before defining the landscape of British comedy as we know it.
All great TV comedy stories start with Peter Cook and our special guest’s is no exception. This episode includes the first of a two-part interview with Jem Roberts, writer of The True History Of The Black Adder and the official biographer of Fry & Laurie, Douglas Adams and other leading lights of comedy.
Here, Jem recounts some of the many rosy-cheeked caperings that occurred while researching his labour of love, such as being gifted with the unpublished Blackadder In Bethlehem script by Richard Curtis, revisiting unused sketches with Stephen Fry – and not being sued by Rowan Atkinson.

Bonus Episode 1: Bottomless Pitt – a full interview with Simon Osborne (Pitt The Younger)
If you’re reading this, then one of us is on holiday or life has dropped a spanner in our usual clockwork schedule. Which is why it always pays to have a bonus episode or two at the ready!
This one contains our full interview with Simon Osborne, who played the wonderfully snotty Pitt The Younger in Dish & Dishonesty, the fast-paced opener for the third season of Blackadder.
Parts have already been included in Episodes 5 and 6, but almost half of the interview – like Baldrick’s trousers – has never been aired before.
We hope you enjoy the chat with Simon and will be back with a new episode very soon.

Episode 7: No Word For ‘Fluffy’
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional tangent.
Episode number seven has a distinctly international flair, with voice messages from far-flung listeners sparking lively discussions about people actually called Blackadder in real life and what cameos Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones might have had in Blackadder The Third.
We also chat with German linguist and comedy enthusiast Felix Anker about getting English comedy to work in other languages and whether his fellow countrymen and women get a rougher deal than most at the hands of the various Blackadders.
And delving into our Trivia Treasure Trove, we discover that there is a very good reason why the Blackadder canon is positively riddled with Bernards…

Episode 6: Pitt The Slightly Older (Part 2)
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional tangent.
Our sixth episode includes the second part of our interview with that splendid acting fellow, Simon Osborne, who played the scheming adolescent Pitt The Younger in the opening episode of Blackadder The Third.
This time around, our Scene Stealer is Ade Edmondson as the Red Baron, the gentleman flyer with a taste for bad puns and toilet humour. We also look at the other roles that Ade has played during his long and fulfilling career and at his longstanding double act with the much-missed Rik Mayall.
Speaking of toilet humour, Viz magazine gets a mention in our trivia question and we discover that there is not one but two links between Blackadder and The Rocky Horror Picture Show …

Episode 5: Pitt The Slightly Older (Part 1)
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional tangent.
Barely 24 hours after we chalked up our thousandth download, our latest offering – Pitt The Slightly Older – marks another important milestone: our first ever interview with an actor from the series.
As the title suggests, the episode features the first of a two-part interview with Simon Osborne, who gave a memorably snotty performance as Pitt The Younger in Dish And Dishonesty, the opening episode to Blackadder The Third.
We speak at length to Simon about how he landed the role in Blackadder at the tender age of sixteen and about his experience in working with many of his comedy heroes. And about the best way to shoot a scene with Rowan Atkinson while he’s constantly pulling faces at you off-camera.
We also delve into our growing bag of listener messages, cherry-pick our favourite cunning plans and discuss whether Elizabethan Edmund had a more progressive outlook than other sitcoms of the late twentieth century.

Episode 4: Long On Beard, Short On Legs
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional tangent.
Episode 4 is called Long On Beard, Short On Legs. As the title subtly suggests, our Scene Stealer is none other than Tom Baker chewing up the scenery as Captain Rum in the Season 2 classic “Potato”, which we will be discussing with our special guest, comedian Harry Hussey.
And speaking of potatoes, hot potatoes, to be precise, have you ever wondered what the dastardly Mossop and Keanrick are chanting to ward off evil spirits every time Mr B. mentions the Scottish play by name? We put our best minds on the job.
We also shine a spotlight on Rowan Atkinson’s live performances back in the 80s and 90s and discuss how he turned a cumbersome speech impediment into comedy gold.
As always, there are plenty of audio clips, trivia and a voice message revealing, among other things, how Blackadder was a little puerile for Ron Lacey’s tastes …

Episode 3: Percy and Perspicacity
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional tangent.
For our third episode, Percy and Perspicacity, we are joined by our very first guest – writer, poet and fellow Blackadder buff Jan Miklaszewicz – who waxes lyrical about Tim McInnerny and the various roles he plays in all four series. And, in one case, three different roles in the same episode!
We will also be revisiting Jim Broadbent’s hilarious turn as the ever-present interpreter to Miriam Margolyes’s Spanish Infanta in our favourite Series 1 episode. And we will be looking back on a long and fruitful career that has gone from high-rises in Peckham to Bullets Over Broadway.

In our second episode – Repayment or Revenge! – we look at the force of nature that is writer and stand-up comedian Ben Elton. As well as revisiting his earlier work, we talk about what Ben brought to the table when he teamed up with Richard Curtis to pen the historic second season of Blackadder.
The first of our regular Scene Stealers segments celebrates Ronald Lacey’s monstrous performance as the Baby-Eating Bishop Of Bath & Wells and looks back at a few of his many memorable roles in film and TV.
We also set the ball rolling with the first selections for our Newbie Playlist, where – together with our listeners and special guests – we compile a list of six episodes best suited to introduce the uninitiated to the foul and fabulous world of Blackadder.

Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 1: Best Fighting Trousers On, Chaps!
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian will be exploring the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder.
In this introductory episode, we’ll be talking about our (cunning) plans for a Blackadder podcast – including regular features, special guests and a generous helping of audio clips from our favourite comedies. And, we hope, yours too.
Most of all, this first episode will be a nostalgic time capsule in which we rediscover the TV comedy we knew and loved as nauseating adolescents over ten thousand miles apart in Melbourne (Michael) and Dublin (Ian) and walk a happy mile or two down the winding roads that led us to Blackadder.
Join us for what we are sure will be a fun-packed trip down memory lane – and maybe even an excuse to dust off that DVD box set (and DVD player!) and revisit the series in all its timeless glory.
