This week's episode is "Roots of the Demon, Part 2." We continue our exploration of the formative years of Night Demon's current members by telling the story of Jarvis's first band, Black Opal. You will hear in detail from Jarvis and other surviving members how Black Opal came into being, their obsession with Metallica, how they dedicated themselves to constant practicing, and how they struggled to get gigs because of their young age and the out-of-fashion nature of their unbridled heavy metal attack. We unearth snippets of Black Opal's first live performance, demo recordings and so on. (Full versions of these recordings are available to subscribers.) We examine how Black Opal's path intersected with a local band called The Whereabouts, which featured Armand on guitar. The Whereabouts were not a heavy metal band, but were a talented alternative rock combo that were ahead of their time and much admired by the local metal community for their next-level musicianship, songwriting, and business savvy. Both bands played together at The Majestic Ventura Theater on many occasions. Finally, we recount the tragic circumstances that led Black Opal to be laid to rest in June 1999.
