A PERFECT new niche perfume store has just opened in Williamsburg. It's called Stéle, and today, I'm joined by its Co-Founders Jake Levy and Matt Belanger. Despite the fact that this store has some of the most obscure and deeply niche fragrances I've come across, neither Matt nor Jake come from fragrance backgrounds! In 2001, 62 vials of perfume were recovered from the Titanic shipwreck. Neil Owen, Head of Product Safety Sciences at Givaudan, was one of the lucky few specialists (alongside esteemed perfumers Christopher Sheldrake and Mark Evans as well as a botanist) tasked with analyzing exactly what the contents of those vials were.

To whom did these vials belong? Were their contents revolutionary or status quo for the times? What did they smell like? Which recovered vial did Christopher Sheldrake describe as one of the best-smelling naturals he'd ever encountered?

A team of just four perfumers with infinite niche perfume launches to their name, Flair is easily one of the best houses of our time, and Margaux is one to watch. In just a few years in the industry, Margaux has already seen several of her creations hit shelves, including 3 BORNTOSTANDOUT fragrances. So many questions and today we cover them all with award-winning Author and Evolutionary Biologist, Dr. Tristram Wyatt. Dr. Wyatt is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford and an Emeritus Fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford. Chronotope Founder and Perfumer Carter Weeks Maddox is in the Perfume Room today! Though Carter is an entirely self-taught perfumer, the lens through which he creates is backed by an MA in Critical Theory. He wrote his thesis on manifestations of the chronotope within women's postwar life writing and his fragrances in many ways exist as the olfactive manifestation of his studies. We discuss issues of colonialism in scent culture, how Carter reclaimed (and recreated) smells of his personal trauma (for profit hehe), the notion of fragrance as performance art, as well as the question at the heart of it all: for whose gaze do we wear scent?

I am joined by the person responsible for the taxonomy of fragrance as we know it — Founder of Fragrances of the World, Inventor of the Fragrance Wheel(!) — Michael Edwards. Maya Njie (of Maya Njie perfume) is a self-taught, London-based perfumer who combines her own scent memories, Swedish and Gambian roots, imagination, and design background to translate photos into scents. And not just any photos— ones from her own family’s archive. Egyptologist Dora Goldsmith is in the Perfume Room today! Perfumer, Sommelier, Activist and Clairvoyant Yosh Han is in the Perfume Room today.
