For this final episode from Lollapalooza, and to bring the festival series of in-person interviews to a close, I sat down on the last day with Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin of Cults, and also had an amazing conversation with Chance Emerson. 

Cults’ music is both surreal and ethereal, but also grounded in down-to-earth songwriting to is striking in its simplicity and authenticity. Brian and Maddie have been at this since they were college students and now 15 years later, they’ve release their fifth full length album, To The Ghosts. They’re embarking on giant US tour and their excitement is palpable and their love for what they do is truly infectious.  

Chance Emerson is an LA-based neo-folk artist who grew up in Hong Kong and went to school at Brown University, where he met his bandmates and formed his band in 2019. Chance is smart, dedicated, and truly devoted to his songwriting craft, and possesses a self-belief that is super admirable. His most recent release is entitled “Gingko.”

I’m back this week with this penultimate installment of in-person interviews from the couch at Lollapalooza where I spoke to four amazing bands and artists for this episode!  

First up is the amazing East Bay crew, Destroy Boys, who are now two-time Roadcase guests!  Vi and Alexia first formed the band at the ripe old age of 15, and haven’t looked back. Their latest album entitled Funeral Soundtrack #4, just came out August 9, and I’m happy to report that this hardworking band just keeps getting better!  We tackle all the things that drive the Destroy Boys ethos and it’s a great conversation.

Quarters of Change from NYC, met in high school, and have a super fun and familial vibe. Having grown up together and being close friends is all part of their unique story of playing clubs as teenagers in the Big Apple. Their new album, Portraits, is out now!

Tanner Usrey is a southern rocker with a heart of gold and a down-home, hard working ethos. Tanner is an absolute Road Dog, and once he quit his day job in late 2019, only Covid could stop him, albeit temporarily. Tanner likes to keep as real as his country roots and has a great story to tell.

Closing this episode is the one and only Godly the Ruler, a Chicago native, who is part performance artist, part chameleon, and part hip-hop EDM rocker while on stage. Their tale is one of finding the lane and then crossing all the lines while still staying true to oneself.

Part 2 of the Lollapalooza Series is here and I’m excited to share my interviews with four first-time Lolla performers, artists and bands — all of whom have super-compelling stories to tell.

First up is 22 year-old Ava Maybee, who has seen the music world from a unique perspective — her Dad is drummer Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. LA-based Ava is charming, engaging, wise beyond her years and well on her way to her own successful music career.  

Nico Vega, from LA, is back after a six year hiatus with a new album and a fresh perspective. While family and life things precipitated their extended break, they’re back with a new album on the horizon and a fresh perspective. You’ll recognize Mike Peña (bass and founding member), from his acting career (Ant Man, Narcos)!! 

Happy Landing is a wonderful set of musicians who started out playing backyards and basements at Ole Miss, and have since toured with The Head and The Heart and Judah & The Lion. Their latest album, Golden, is out now!!

Fifteen0eight is an electronica duo that truly pushes genre boundaries to create unique, heavy, and exciting soundscapes. Both talented Berklee College of Music graduates, they bring an excitement and enthusiasm to everything they do.

I'm back in Chicago for Lollapalooza!!  This gigantic music festival took place August 1-4 right out my front door in Chicago's Grant Park.  I'm totally psyched to bring you loads of interviews with some of the music industry's biggest talents. 

This first part of the four-part series of in-person interviews kicks off with the wonderful and talented Goldie Boutilier. Goldie is no stranger to success and has had several career incarnations along the way, giving her a unique perspective — and she wants to share that knowledge and excitement with younger artists!! Goldie is a believer in the power of manifestation — and I’m all about that!

Grant Perez, who performs under the name grentperez, began as a YouTube star as a kid… fast forward 5-6 years when Grant wins the 2024 ARIA award for Emerging Songwriter of the Year!! Grant’s energy and enthusiasm is super infectious and his humble vibe is super refreshing.

The National Parks has been following their bliss and using nature as a muse since they all first met in Provo, Utah over a decade ago. Their commitment to the outdoors is as evident in the music as it is in their chosen band name, and they have built a massive following with their Pop Folk/Americana vibe.

To round out this Part 1 episode is LA-based Cale Tyson, whose Pop Folk vibe is infused with humor and authenticity. Leaving Nashville and the Traditional Country route behind, Cale set out for the Wild West of Los Angeles to carve out a new chapter in his multi-varied career. Cale is a chill dude with a great sense of humor — he’s the perfect Roadcase guest!!

And to conclude the Newport Folk Festival Series of in-person interviews from the 2024 edition of this amazing festival, I’m happy to present William Prince, Alisa Amador, and Solange Igoa and Andrea Walker of Glitterfox!!

William is the 2024 John Prine Songwriter Fellowship Award winner, and his latest album, Stand in the Joy, won William his second JUNO award as well as the nod for the Canadian Country Music Awards Alternative Country Album of the Year.  Alisa is a charming and witty human, with a new album, Multitudes, which includes tracks in both Spanish and English. Alisa, who won the 2022 Tiny Desk Contest, combines a level of vulnerability with the ability to connect with her audience in totally unique way. Solange and Andrea of Glitterfox bring a super positive and fun vibe to everything they do, and this interview was no exception. I love their combination of roots and indie rock with danceable garage vibes. This amazing couple have a compelling and sweet story of love, perseverance and high energy that is both engaging and heartwarming, and I’m all about it!!

I’m back with more interviews live from Newport Folk for this Part 2 of the 2024 Newport Folk Festival Series on Roadcase. This episode features some of my favorite interviews I’ve done for Roadcase. There was truly something special that occurred with each of these artists and the result is really spectacular!!  

First up is the iconic Donavon Frankenreiter, who is now into his third decade of music, having debuted his first album in 2004. Donavon is at Newport for the first time to celebrate his upcoming album, Get Outta Your Mind. The dude is a truly unique human, and we have a totally great vibe and it's a stellar conversation. Ocie Elliott is Jon Middleton and Sierra Lundy, and we all sit down on the couch for loads of laughs and great times talking about their music, overall vibe, origin story and simply everything and anything. Jobi Riccio rounds out this episode and it’s a blast. Jobi is the 2023 John Prine Fellowship recipient as well as the reigning 2024 Luck Reunion Artist on the Rise. She has had a simply amazing year since the last we sat down at last year’s Newport Folk, and this time we get into it all.

Roacase is back at Newport Folk Festival and I'm super excited for you to listen to all these amazing interviews and artist stories!! 

Today's episode, Part 1, features the legendary artist Taj Mahal, whose career spans seven decades and multiple genres; Billy Bragg, activist, folk artist, 80s hero, and Destroyer of Cynicism; Phil and Tim Hanseroth aka The Hanseroth Twins, who are Brandi Carlile’s closest collaborators and decades-long bandmates with a debut album out now, entitled Vera; Kelsey Wilson of the amazing Funk/Soul band Sir Woman who is also know for her solo work with Wild Child; and Briscoe -- Truett Heintzelman and Phillip Lupton -- who recently released their Folk Rock/Americana debut album, West of It All.

Let’s keep the vibe rolling with this Part 2 of the Pitchfork Music Festival Series, and this fun episode features my conversations with Raleigh-Durham based artist Rosali, the eclectic duo Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug of Sweeping Promises, and the Chicago-based rap duo Angry Blackmen.   

Rosali’s latest album, Bite Down, is steeped in super cool folk rock vibes and equally stellar songwriting. Rosali have a great conversation, and we not only talk about dogs and N Carolina life, but we get into all kinds of rich terrain including how she strives be vulnerable in her songwriting and what the means for her in other areas of her life.

Lira and Caufield bring a super eclectic energy as they are both very much practitioners of the DIY ethos. This amazing couple have been friends now for over a decade and we talk about how they’ve structured their life in Lawrence, Kansas around their unique artform.  They truly walk the walk!

Brian and Quentin are Chicago natives who bring their amazing energy to the Pitchfork stage for the first time. Their new album, The Legend of ABM, is deep and dark, and we talk about the issues that we all face, and Brian tells me about his effort to help others know that they are not alone. These two big-hearted giants talk to me about their lives both on and off the stage in this super vibey and very candid conversation.

Festival Season on Roadcase is finally upon us and we’re kicking it off from Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago!! For this Part 1 from Pitchfork, I talked to singer, rapper and multi-genre artist, Tkay Maizda and also had a fun convo with the amazing Riot Girrrrls themselves, Molly Neuman and Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile. 

Tkay has achieved global recognition already in her brief career, having won NME's Best Australian Solo Artist in 2022. She was also nominated for an ARIA award for Best Rap Song for her 2023 single "Silent Assassin."  But accolades alone do not do her justice; Tkay is a joyous human and a tireless artist, and she talked to me about striving to create and perform at the highest levels. We discussed what it was like growing up in Australia, moving frequently from city to city, how she stayed true to herself and her art.

Molly and Allison of Bratmobile are back playing live after a 20-year hiatus and are both super excited to be performing again. Having been at the hub of the Riot Girl movement in the early 90s, Bratmobile waved the flag for the DIY spirit and Girl Power. They both talked to me about their fierce advocacy for Women's Rights and for the inclusion of Women in the music industry both in performance and production roles, and talked to me about all the life they’ve lived since starting up the band over 30 years ago!

Trousdale is here on Roadcase!!  This dynamic trio of Quinn D'Andrea, Georgia Greene and Lauren Jones is crushing it on the road this year, and I talk to them about this latest tour, the upcoming deluxe release of their 2023 album Out of My Mind, and how far they've come since their college days together at USC.  

Trousdale is out there spreading their vibe of love and self-acceptance, while playing to adoring audiences across the country.  They each talked to me about how important it is to be role models for young women; not only to be their best selves, but also to inspire and support women in all facets of the music industry -- especially on the production side.

With stellar vocal harmonies and a genuine vibe of authenticity and down-to-earth charm, Quinn, Georgia and Lauren really demonstrate what it means to be yourself and own who you are, no matter what, and I'm here for it!!   

Ryan Miller is here this week, and we had a fun, sometimes goofy, yet deep and reflective conversation — all the things one might come to expect from the Guster frontman.  

A veteran of 30+ years at the helm, and with a new Guster album, Ooh La La — arguably their best work to date — Ryan has an exciting outlook for his own creative future and that of the band. A uniquely talented and affable human with a terrific sense of humor, Ryan simply has a generous spirit and caring soul, and that 100% comes through in this super fun interview.

Little did I know that Ryan is the ultimate Roadcase guest, full of fun quips — both self-deprecating and directed happily at me — and we totally vibe out on all things, and I’m here for that!! This is simply a great episode that you won’t want to miss!!

Shannon Shaw and I go super deep on this week’s episode as she talks to me about the tragic loss of her partner, Joe Haener, almost two years ago, just prior to their wedding date. This unimaginably horrible accident formed the basis of the new and absolutely wonderful Shannon and the Clams album, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place. 

This is a sad yet hopeful conversation about the power of music and performance to heal, the profound and enduring qualities of grief (and how to manage it), and the quixotic juxtaposition of Nature which shows us lessons we can all learn in order to truly value the brief but wonderful life we all have the opportunity to live. 

This is one of the most precious, touching, sad, and yet hopeful conversations I’ve had on Roadcase, and Shannon demonstrates strength, resolve, resilience, gratitude, and an enduring human spirit that can serve as an example for us all.  And… the new album is truly an amazing GEM!!

I go Down Under this week on Roadcase as Keith Jeffery of Atlas Genius joins me from his home near Adelaide, Australia for this week’s episode. 

Atlas Genius is about to release its first album in nine years, End Of The Tunnel, due out August 23, and in this amazing conversation, I talk to Keith about performing his first shows is five years, just last month, and what it means to him to hit the stage after a sizable hiatus from touring. We go deep into his childhood trauma, the lasting impact that had on his own psyche and how this literal band of brothers started its journey as a result. 

So very much has changed for Keith since his hit single “Trojans” went Platinum and launched him into the stratosphere in 2013, and we talk about how he’s adjusting to life in 2024 with the perspective of having already surveyed life on the mountaintop. It’s all very exciting for Keith — a sensitive and gentle soul with a heart of gold. 

Keith and I have tons in common and this episode feels like a conversation between two old friends!!  It’s another epic chat with an amazing artist with loads to share about his personal and professional life and I’m here for it!!

The DIY spirit is alive and well this week with Mo Lowda & The Humble sitting in for a full band interview — and it was a total blast. I chatted with longtime friends and bandmates Jordan Caiola, Shane Woods, Jeff Lucci and Kirby Sybert and talked all about the easy-going yet hard working band dynamics that have kept this tight-knit group of musicians rolling along for over a decade now.  Their fourth album, the 2023 self-titled release, is their best yet, and the self-produced Mo Lowda talked to me about their commitment to the DIY ethos, how far they’ve come, as well as the ups and downs of being the ultimate indie road warriors. 

Having an entire band on the show always produces tons of laughs and this interview was no exception. It was a fun, Green Room-style hang, and we also go deep into the band’s roots, tracking the progression from a Philly “basement band,” to consistently packing out major venues across the country.

Jamband alert for this week’s episode with Jen Meyerhardt!! Jen is co-owner and co-producer of Northlands Music and Arts Festival taking place June 14-15 in Swanzey, NH and talked to me about her impressive history in the legal jungle and how that prepared her for the live events production world.

A native of New Canaan, CT, with a law degree and years of experience in Silicon Valley, Jen is also a long-time jamband fan and lover of live music, who now brings her impressive life experiences and go-getter attitude to even greater heights. We talked about what it means to truly lean into her lifelong passion for live music to bring some of the industry’s premier jam bands to play a humble New Hampshire hamlet year after year.

It’s an inspiring story of following one’s dream, listening to the music play, and heeding the call to see where it all may take you. Jen’s long strange trip serves as an inspiration to all, while perhaps more importantly, her journey represents a shining beacon and role model for diversity and women’s representation at the highest level of live music events, and I’m all about it!!

Tyler Ramsey sat down with me for this week’s episode of Roadcase, and I couldn’t be more stoked to chat with the former Band of Horses guitarist.

One of my favorite artists and humans, Greg Ormont, joins me on Roadcase with the release a their new album, "Day in Time."  We chat about everything from Italy and his well-known love of cheese to musical theatre and the origins of the band at University of Maryland. Greg is a truly unique individual who is both deliberate and free-flowing in his thought: that rare breed of artist who not only delights audiences and fans, but is also able to precisely calculate the energy of the room and then exceed all expectations in taking that level to tremendous heights.  An enduring fixture in the jamband community, Greg and I talk about the state of the jam world today and what that means for the future of music at-large as well as the direction of the band. JJ Grey joins me on Roadcase for this week's episode and I couldn't be more psyched!!  I recently caught up with JJ while in the midst of a massive US tour, having recently released his ninth studio album and first since 2016, entitled Olustee. A proud native Floridian, JJ is an intriguing artist with a unique view on life and his creative pursuits. I talked to JJ about his almost Zen-like qualities and what that has meant for him along the route from rural Florida, to London, and back again. "You don't so much sail across the Ocean; you simply put up a sail and let the wind blow you across," he explains to me. I’m super pumped to speak with Anders Beck for Episode 226!! Anders is the dobro player for Greensky Bluegrass, whose unique blend of Bluegrass and Rock and makes it one of the most compelling sounds in live music today.  Greensky has been touring practically non-stop for over 20 years, and Anders stopped in to chat with me just after completing their Winter Tour with yet another sold out two-night run at the Ryman Auditorium. Anders has a fun-loving and super chill vibe, and he is filled with gratitude for his place in life. “Music means live music,” Anders explained to me, and his appreciation for doing exactly what he set out to do; that is, play live music in a successful touring band, is utterly inspiring and heart-warming. This was certainly one of the most poignant and moving interviews I’ve conducted on Roadcase. I talked to the amazing Rett Madison, who tells the story of her investigation, discovery and ultimately, vindication in uncovering the source of her Mother’s pain during her short life, and it was both chilling and empowering to hear. You need to really hear this story to believe it — we’re talking coincidences and psychic mediums revealing details that I could hardly believe… until I heard it first-hand!  Rett, whose voice is truly one-of-a-kind, recounts this gripping story in intimate detail, on her new album, One for Jackie. Thank you, Rett, for sharing your amazing story with me!!  I cannot recommend this episode enough.

March was International Women’s Month and I sat down with Anna Ayers, the General Manager at Brooklyn Bowl Williamsburg, for this week’s episode of Roadcase. Dallon Weekes is here on Roadcase this week, and I'm excited to share my interview with this veteran performer and experienced touring artist.  Dallon began his career in Salt Lake City with his band The Brobecks, and then spent years with Panic! At The Disco before settling on most recent project, I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME (iDKHOW). Dallon is an intriguing mix of artistry, family man, and musical sage, if you will -- and has a keen wit and fun-loving personality.  I had a great time chatting with Dallon and we cover a ton of ground including his attitudes towards mental health and his experience a parent of teenagers. Fans need tickets and artists need fans. On this week’s episode, I talk to Brando Rich, co-founder and CEO of Cash or Trade, the popular ticket exchange app. Brando’s mission is to get tickets that might go unused into the hands of fans that need them -- at face value or less. As the de-facto head of the Face Value Movement, Brando talks to me about the intricacies of ticketing, how best to thwart scalpers, and how the live music experience is the vital essence that drives Cash or Trade’s continued growth and expansion. Brando wants fans to enjoy the amazing experience of live music, and he learned early on from the Phish and jam band world that by using his programming expertise, he could unite fans with face value tickets in a community of like minded music lovers. Idealistic?  Yes!  Feasible and doable?  Yes and yes!! I really enjoyed this conversation with Brando as we explore this crazy and tangled up world of ticketing. Durand Jones has a lot to say, and we really get into it in this amazing and refreshing conversation. Marcus Rezak is here and we're diving deep into the world of improvisational modern rock. I talk to Marcus about his commitment to collaborations and sit-ins as well as his new album Guitar Head, produced by Paul Nelson (Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy) and featuring Kris Myers and Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee, among others! Collaboration is a way of life in Marcus's world and he's played with a long list of musical luminaries. We’re delving into the world of artist management this week when I talk to manager Drew Simmons, who’s riding high with his chief client, Noah Kahan -- one of the biggest names in music today.  Drew is a Partner at Foundations Artist Management in Nashville and is now at the pinnacle of his career. Nine years ago he discovered Noah’s music on SoundCloud, subsequently drove to Vermont to meet him and the rest is history. Drew had always been drawn to the music industry and in his younger days steadily worked his way up the ranks, working any and all jobs and angles he could find!  An expert at the human side of the business as well, Drew is well versed in managing not only careers from a business standpoint, but also focusing on the artist as a whole. His dedication, personal investment and love for what he does is palpable and I’m here for it.

Big shoutout to all you Auburn University fans out there for this week’s episode when I sit down with Birmingham, AL natives and members of The Brook & The Bluff, who began their career playing house gigs and frat parties while pursuing their studies. This is a super lively five-way epic interview with band members John Canada, Joseph Settine, Fred Lankford and Alec Bolton who joined me to talk about their latest projects and life on the road.

These guys have mostly known each other forever — and even sung together in Choir — so they’ve been working on their sweet harmonies for a majority of their young lives. Live performance plays a major part in their band ethos, and they’ve managed to build a super strong connection with their audience by perseverance, musical skill, amazing song arrangements, and stellar personalities that keep fans coming back for more. Their story is a compelling and endearing tale of great friends who love what they do, and get to do it together.

While major summer festival announcements are coming in fast and furious, I dig deep into the Roadcase Vault and dream of warm summer days with four previously unreleased in-person interviews I did at last year’s Lollapalooza 2023 featured on this week’s episode.

First up is Texas rocker and legendary road dog Austin Meade who is now a new Dad, having welcomed his son into the world shortly after I spoke to him, and is just coming off a major North American Fall tour in support of Dirty Honey. His most recent album, Abstract Art of an Unstable Mind, sets a high bar for creative exploration in the rock genre.

Next, I had a super fun conversation with Chicago-native Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer. Having begun her journey in pursuit of a career in dentistry, Deanna explains to me how she quickly discovered that the straight route was just not for her. Solo gigs soon became a full band effort and Deanna talks to me about her personal and quirky lyrical style in full display on Sincere Engineer’s latest album, Cheap Grills.

In the third slot, I talk to Danny Davis of Husbands who is no stranger to change. Recently, he parted ways with his longtime collaborator and bandmate, Will Norton, quit his job as a software engineer to pursue music full-time, and moved to Costa Rica. Danny talks to me about how happy he is to have managed to create a new life for himself while doing what he loves. Husbands’ latest album, Cuatro, is a testament to the power of change and the pitfalls therein.

Lastly, I spoke to Axel Ellis, Hunter Olshefke, and Sal Defilippis of Ax and the Hatchetmen. These young Chicago-natives are  Lollapalooza rookies and talk to me about what that means having grown up fans of their massive hometown festival. Exciting things are yet to come for this enthusiastic and tight-knit group as they continue to turn on their fans with their infectious energy.

Say She She is here and I am still smiling from this super fun conversation I had with this stellar trio!!  The amazing Nya, Piya and Sabrina have been close friends for ages, and have finally come together in recent years to combine absolutely enthralling vocals with a vibey funk style they've dubbed "discodelic," and it's totally infectious. Their second album, Silver, released in 2023 has set a high benchmark for this expanding genre.  Fun times aside, these stellar women have been touring hard and killing it on stages both large and small, as well as massive shows from Glastonbury in the UK to the Hollywood Bowl to Central Park Summerstage. Their stories from the road are indeed epic but even more importantly, Say She She flies the flag for empowerment, diversity and social awareness; they are a band with a higher purpose, if you will. Their recent song, Norma, written in response to the overturning of Roe v Wade has propelled them speak out and raise money not only for reproductive rights, but also for other important causes such as stricter gun control legislation and climate change awareness.  Say She She is a bright light of awesome vibes and feel good music, while setting a shining example for new generations of young women. This interview is as inspiring as it is fun, and I'm all in!!

I spoke to the super-chill Oklahoma native Max Rainer of Wilderado in this compelling interview, and it was like meeting an old friend. Max is a family man who cares deeply about the relationships in his life and quite intentionally strives to strike a healthy balance between his home life and his time on the road. However, after having played over 250 shows in 2022, Wilderado is now seeking to maintain a bit more measured pace. But this is not to say that Wilderado is slowing down; the band is doing quite the opposite. With their first full length album coming out in 2021, the self-titled "Wilderado," and new music being released regularly, Max continues to give everything he has to his fans without feeling constrained by standard industry norms. I get deep with Max about life both at home and on the road, and we discuss the beauty of Malibu, his newly released and latest single "In Between" featuring Matt Berninger of The National, and why the connection with his fans is so important to him. Max is a unique talent and special human, and I'm here for that.

Season Finale alert!!  I've got a stellar lineup for this last of the Roadcase summer festival series of interviews on this, the final episode of the 2023 Season.  It's been an amazing summer and I'm psyched to wrap it all up with three fun convos.  First up, I talk to George Gekas, the stellar bass player of The Revivalists.  George is a music fan, musician, family man, and seriously chill dude who is down to chat with me about all the cool stuff he loves and gets to do, from playing music at Red Rocks to touring the country with his lifelong friends and chosen family. The Revivalists have an awesome new album out entitled Pour It Out Into The Night, their fifth album -- the first one in five years -- and we're here for it!

Next is the wonderful Cassandra Lewis whose absolutely stunning voice blends classic country with a unique psychedelic vibe to give new meaning to the Cosmic Country world. I talk to Cassandra about her recently released debut album, Always, All Ways,  and she shares with me her unique insights into love and life and how her myriad experiences fuel the relationship she has with her audience.  While she's had some bumps in life, her story is stunning example of the power of self-love and acceptance -- and I'm all about that!

To conclude this Bumbershoot series and bring the 2023 Roadcase Season to a close, I sit down for a fun convo with Barry Lally and Cian McClusky of alt-pop sensation, modernlove., These fun Irish gents have literally been friends their entire life and I talk to them about their years touring the US and Europe, and the impact of their massive popularity. I'm back with more amazing artist interviews I did at Bumbershoot Arts and Music Festival in Seattle over Labor Day weekend and this episode couldn't be more fun. I start off with the amazing Valerie June -- Grammy-nominated artist, author, poet and yogi. He lighthearted spirit and zest for life is in full force, and she's here to talk to me about spreading joy, love and tapping into one's unique creative self.

Next up is Courtney Taylor and Pete Holmström of The Dandy Warhols, who have been making their special brand of eclectic and enigmatic music for more than 25 years. We head down myriad roads -- veering off on multiple detours along the way -- in this compelling exploration of what it takes to continue to unlock new doors in the alternate musical universe they inhabit.

I then sit down with Nigerian-born Canadian artist DEBBY FRIDAY, whose debut album released in March, GOOD LUCK, has propelled her into a new orbit. Debby talks to me about what an amazing and groundbreak year this has been and how taking her artistry on the road has helped her mature as an artist.

I round out this exciting episode with Evan Smith of local Seattle band, The Dip. Evan came to Seattle to study music at the University of Washington where he met fellow his bandmates to form The Dip. I talk to Evan about how the band has developed moved from playing houseparties to embarking on national tours with Lake Street Dive and then touring Europe with the likes of Durand Jones. It's been an amazing ride!!

I'm continuing to come at you with in-person interviews from festivals around the country -- and this time I'm celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Bumbershoot Arts and Music Festival, which took place in Seattle over Labor Day weekend.  In this Part 1 of another intriguing three-part series, I first sit down for a rousing conversation with Thunderpussy, a local Seattle staple, to celebrate the inclusivity and empowerment which are hallmarks of both Thunderpussy and the Seattle scene at-large. These amazing women will rock your socks off, among other things!! 

Next up is one of my favorite people on the planet, the artist/musician/activist/mental health advocate, Cameron Lavi-Jones of the kick-ass rockband, King Youngblood. Cameron will literally and figuratively rock your world as he talks to me about the myriad causes he passionately and actively supports. He is a total gem of a human!

Destroy Boys is in the 3-slot as I sat down with these thoughtful, energetic and surprisingly reflective punk rockers to discuss their roots in the Bay Area punk scene. As we gather outside the KEXP studios, they explain to me the nature and essence of the energy and purpose they bring to their fans around the globe.

Last up are twins Cedric and Eva Walker, The Black Tones, who talk to me about their Seattle roots mixed with a New Orleans heritage, and how Rice Krispie treats can be so amazing.  This charming duo gives a new meaning to the love of family while bringing a unique energy and warmth to all their music and beyond.

In this final installment from Lollapalooza, I'm psyched to bring you a super hip lineup of diverse artists!  First up, I talk to Jordan Topf of Windser who reflects on the early days in his hometown of Santa Cruz, CA as we dissect the nature of vulnerability and its importance in crafting his artistic vision. Jordan's got a new single out, Get Lost, and he's headed out on the road this Fall with The Happy Fits.

Usted Señalemelo is the first Argentinian band to play Lollapalooza USA, and we talk about what it means to be on their first US tour, growing up in the small town of Mendoza, and the significance of being a close-knit band of friends who've been playing music together since they were kids. They're having the time of their lives!

Hoosh, who attended University of Miami, was born in Sudan and was raised in both the US and the Middle East. I go deep with Hoosh to talk about his family background and how he buried his innate musical talent as a kid and it wasn't until he was in his early 20s when he began to pursue his dreams.

Last up, I talk to Chaos and Rage of Bad Neighbors, who enlighten me as to their unique life philosophy of being neither here nor there, of this world or of another, and how pain guides and propels them in their artistic journey. With this epic episode, I'm bringing you more in-person interviews from Lollapalooza, which took place in Chicago's Grant Park August 3-6. 

First up is mega-engaging Matt Maltese, who enlightens me as to the charms of his former makeshift garage studio in London to his former struggles with live performance. This amazing crooner has a silky smooth voice and a killer charm to go along with it.  Check out his latest album, "Driving Just to Drive."  (Note:  in the intro, I erroneously mention that Matt is Canadian, but Matt is actually only part-Canadian, and is UK-based!)

Next is the equally charming Ella Jane who has received the stamp of approval of Sir Elton John for her 2021 single "Calling Card." Her sense of humor is contagious as she talks to me about growing up in a small-town suburb of New York City and how she's been singing and writing seemingly forever. She just dropped a new single, "Dead Weight."

Cafuné is the Brooklyn-based duo of Sedona Schat and Noah Yoo, both NYU Music School grads who have formed a unique business and musical partnership. They talk to me about their unique journey from recording their first album in their dorm room to performing on the Lollapalooza stage.

Last up is Canadian rocker Loviet whose new record, "Little Heaven" is due out September 29. Loviet likes to get personal in her music and talks to me about her obsession with rock and roll, her musical upbringing and the difficulties of being a woman in today's music industry.

Episode 200!!  I'm back home in the Chi and here to celebrate this milestone episode with this special three-part series of in-person interviews I conducted LIVE on the couch at Lollapalooza in Chicago's Grant Park, August 3-6.

Kicking off with Part 1 is the hyper-talented and supremely energetic duo Ned Franc and Jon Moody, the British frontmen of Franc Moody who talk to me about their high-octane sets and their origins as a hardworking DIY outfit operating out of a Tottenham warehouse near London.

Second up is festival rookie playing his first big stage outing, Pardyalone, (born Kalvin Tyler Beal), who is as genuine and empathetic as they come. His humble beginnings in Minnesota have given him a unique songwriting perspective -- Kalvin constantly seeks the Truth in all he does. He talks to me about life, performance and his recurring teeth-dreams -- and we explore together just what it means to dig deep and "get uncomfortable."

In the three-slot is Jeffrey Paradise of Poolside, who talks to me about the creative process for his upcoming album, Blame It All on Love, and how it was marred by a bizarre and tragic event. Jeff has been mixing up genres for years and he talks to me about how Poolside is a wonderful reflection of going against the grain -- in all parts of his life.

To round out this Lollapalooza episode, Festival rookie, Aidan Bissett sits down with me just after he delivers his very first festival performance ever, and the stoke is high. Just 20 years-old, Aidan possesses a maturity and self-awareness well beyond his years and I talk to him about his perceived need to "move fast," and how that is affecting him in his young life. Aidan is headed out on his first headlining tour this Fall.

It's time for the final installment of this year's in-person interviews I conducted at the legendary Newport Folk Festival which took place in Newport, Rhode Island, July 28-30.

First up, my friends Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran of Illiterate Light stopped by to chat with me about the Bike Stage that they hosted, curated and operated. Jeff and Jake -- a hard-core rocking two-piece by day -- have created a sustainable and entirely off-the-grid solution to set a shining example of how we can mitigate the environmental impact of the live music ecosystem. This is the embodiment of Think Globally, Act Locally!!

Next up, I spoke to Jake Ewald of Slaughter Beach, Dog, a Newport Folk first-timer whose alt-folk brand of artistry was a perfect fit for the Harbor Stage audience. I talk to Jake about his powerful songwriting and how very unexpected it was for him to even be at Newport Folk. We share tons of laughs as Jake's comedic timing is spot-on. Slaughter Beach, Dog's new album Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling will be out September 22.

I also had the pleasure of sitting down with Erich Huffaker and Mariam Diakite of Orchestra Gold, a band with roots both in Oakland, CA as well as Mali, West Africa.  I talk with Erich and Mariam about the African Psychedelic Rock movement and how African Dance is integrated into the ethos of this band, whose mission is to "spread healing and community through the universal gift of music." Amen.

And to close down the 2023 Folk Fest series, I had a gem of a convo with Newport natives Evan St. Martin and Dave Sarazen of Laden Valley.  The first act to hit the stage this year, it was a surreal experience for sure, and they both related to me just how incredibly special it was for them, after years of attending the festival as fans, to actually be up there performing one of their rare live shows. This was an example of the pure joy of live performance for both fans and the artists themselves.

It has truly been an honor to bring all these amazing artists to the Roadcase audience. Newport is a truly special experience for artists and fans alike, and I'm glad I can bring some of that excitement and musical joy to all of you.  See you all at Newport 2024, and in the meantime, Rock On!!

The Newport Folk Festival Series continues and I'm really excited to bring you this outstanding and diverse group of artists for the penultimate chapter of in-person interviews I conducted live at Fort Adams.

I'm kicking off this installment with the amazing singer songwriter Mereba, whose folk / soul hybrid style of artistry is nothing short of stunning.  I have a super chill convo with Mereba, a truly gentle soul -- and a massive Bob Dylan fan -- who had dreamt of playing at Newport Folk.

Next, it's Bluegrass time in the Media Tent, as I have a rousing and super fun conversation with the one and only Bluegrass legend and 15-time Grammy winner, Jerry Douglas. It's a laugh a minute as Jerry and I talk about how traditional bluegrass has morphed into its modern form while still respecting its roots. 

I then attempt to use my high school French skills (but mostly the interpreter) in my convo with Jupiter Bokondji of Jupiter and Okwess, who comes from the Congo by way of Berlin to bring us his magical mixture of African beats, dance moves, and psychedelic rock. I talk to Jupiter about his role as a trailblazer and he explains to me the secrets of Okwess: how he nourishes the world with his musical vibes. 

Rounding out Part 4 and taking our souls and spirits higher is The Harlem Gospel Travelers: Ifedayo Gatling, George Marage and Dennis Bailey. They talk to me about how you don't have to be a Believer for gospel and to raise you up and make you feel it.  Their sets are a true inspiration and further proof that the power of music is REAL.

Festival season is here, and we're totally psyched for it!!  Just back from Newport Folk Festival, Roadcase ventures into the depths at Pitchfork Music Festival for this special live interview episode -- the first of the summer -- and it's a hot one. In this episode, Josh sits down with three super-talented artists, each bringing a unique vibe to Union Park for this year's hippest indie Fest. Up first is Sen Morimoto, a Chicago-based performer, songwriter, producer and now co-owner of the new indie label Sooper Records.  Outside of the box performer Axel Boman, who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, joins us "fresh off the boat" to tell us about his compelling brand of house and experimental music and regales us with tales of growing up in the hot Rave culture in Scandinavia. We're finally easing into summermode this week with our last full interview of the season and this is a great one!  Proxima Parada's Nick Larson and Kevin Middlekauf have been friends since college in San Luis Obispo, CA, and have crafted a musical career together underpinned by the strong support of their fans and local community.  Now, almost ten years into this, they're on their fifth album, Second Brother, released in 2021 and their free-flowing and sun-soaked indie soul vibes feel fresh and organic as ever -- most apropos for a native-California band. Both bands are Pitchfork Rookies and are looking forward to their time on the Union Park stages. In this special two-part episode, Josh first talks to Chicago’s Deeper about their relationship with live performance and how they're gearing up for this special Pitchfork set. Sarah, who is both a noted producer as well as a stellar songwriter and performer, talks to Josh about what performing at Pitchfork means for illuminati hotties and how she faces a delicate balancing act as her touring and studio work begin to collide more and more in her life. For both bands, Pitchfork comes at a key time in their careers and they're all here to reflect on what that means to them. It has been a long road for Peter One from his humble beginnings in Ivory Coast, where he grew up not far from the administrative capital, Abidjan, all the way to Nashville and the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and The Ryman.  Having picked up a guitar at 17, then joining up with a schoolmate and fellow musician, Jess Sah Bi, Peter released his first album in 1985, Our Garden Needs Its Flowers, and shortly thereafter became a national sensation in his home country, playing for the President of Ivory Coast and regaling massive stadium crowds with his brand of Afro-pop and Americana-influenced folk. Packing up that success in a suitcase full of dreams, Peter left for America, landing in New York City in the mid-90s where he began a new life there working as a nurse and eventually moved to Nashville, all the while quietly making plans to rebuild his music career -- and that he did!  With the re-release of "Garden" in 2018 thanks to the small indie label Awesome Tapes from Africa, and thanks to glowing reviews from both Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, Peter began to regain a level of popularity and begin his Second Act. Now, almost 40 years after his debut effort, Peter's sophomore album, Come Back to Me, has just been released on Verve Records. Triumphantly, but not unexpectedly, Peter eventually found himself playing big stages in the U.S. and even opening at The Ryman for Jason Isbell, who explained, "he's a natural performer; you feel like you're seeing someone who is a legendary singer."  This is an amazing comeback story, and one of patience, perseverance and determination; one that is loaded with Peter's lowkey and confident vibe, all the while infused with his firm belief in himself and what he knew to be true about the power of his own creative expression and what he has to offer the world. Born into a musical family and having grown up on both sides of the Atlantic, Lilly Winwood has thrived as a key Nashville songstress since she made Music City her permanent home, shortly after completing her studies in the UK. When Izzy Heltai's Mom took him to Newport Folk Festival as a kid, Izzy would never have believed he'd be playing that very stage roughly a decade or so later, but lo and behold, dreams do sometimes become reality. But that road has not been an easy one for Izzy.  As a trans person, self-realization had been forced upon him in a very real and striking way. And as a young trans youth, Izzy was forced to know himself far more than some people ever will; yet his struggle with identity has made him the person he is today. As a result, the authenticity and barebones realism in his artistic output is even more striking. Not only has Izzy been writing songs since he was 16 years old, but he's a true Road Dog -- slogging out time in his van driving across the country, touring in true DIY style. Now having performed at Newport Folk, as well as Bonaroo, SXSW and ACL, Izzy has truly hit his stride. His lovely debut EP, Day Plan (5 songs Written 4 the End of the World), showcases his neo-folk vibe and authentic self in a compelling and down-to-earth fashion. His recent performance at the Love Rising Benefit at Bridgestone Arena in Newport to support the movement against anti-trans legislation has been a highlight of his year thus far and he will be playing Outside Lands Festival in August. April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month and to help us shed light on this important issue, Maggie Arthur stopped by to highlight the amazing work she does at Calling All Crows to ensure sure that music venues are safe spaces for all.  Maggie recently joined Calling All Crows where she is now Director of the Here for the Music division. Prior to joining CAC, Maggie was at Resilience, a Chicago-based rape crisis center and before that, Maggie headed up Our Music My Body, a Chicago-based organization focused on creating an environment for all to enjoy music safely.  To this end, Here for the Music seeks to prevent and end sexual violence and assault in live music spaces, and we discuss, among many topics, not only what individuals can do as bystanders when witnessing a situation, but also how to properly handle and assist if something unfortunate might occur.  Here for the Music also seeks to educate not only the concert-going public as to the broader issue of Sexual Assault in society at-large, but also to educate venue owners and employees as to the importance of sexual assault prevention and what can be done on that front. We all want venues to be safe spaces free from sexual violence, and we applaud the work that Maggie is doing toward achieving this goal for all.  So tune in for this very important interview with Maggie Arthur of Calling All Crows and learn what you can do to make music venues safe for everyone! 

Josh Lane, vocalist and frontman of today's featured guest, Thee Sacred Souls, describes music as "human medicine."  We couldn't agree more. Joined on this week's episode by guitarist Alex Garcia and bassist Sal Samano, Josh connects with Thee Sacred Souls' fans in a unique and down-to-earth way.  This trio of native Californians started out only a few years ago in 2019, and their self-titled debut album, released just last year, was met with broad acclaim that surprised even the band itself. Combining a 70s soul and R&B vibe with deeply personal yet universal themes, Thee Sacred Souls has charmed it's way into the hearts of its growing following. Taylor Upsahl, who performs under the moniker UPSAHL, is an incredibly talented and driven young artist, who is not only super-innovative in her creative expression, but also does so while maintaining a fresh and disarming self-awareness. A resident of LA now for several years, Taylor has successfully and wonderfully created a compelling pop-rock lane that has garnered her legions of fans, despite her young age of 24.  She enjoyed viral success on TikTok when only just out of high school, and she continued that momentum in connecting with her fans by emanating a strong vibe of girl power, unbreakable self-determination and a compelling WGAF attitude. Chris Wood is going back to his roots, so to speak.  When not on the road or in the studio shredding amazing bass lines in his band The Wood Brothers, he's on his farm in British Columbia, Canada, tilling the land and getting his hands dirty! Amongst all that hard work, Chris has found the time to co-produce The Wood Brothers' latest album released on April 14, Heart is the Hero, recorded analog on 16-track tape. In going back to a more traditional recording process, Chris has once again broken new (and old) ground with his brother and Wood Brothers co-founder, Oliver Wood along with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix on percussion and keys!  Chris is an intriguing and well-rounded musician, coming from a jazz / improv background with Medeski Martin & Wood to the Americana vibes of The Wood Brothers.  He is equal parts philosopher, farmer, producer, touring musician, and Dad -- and simply an all-around intriguing human -- who moves in a direction and then goes for it. Joanne is an extraordinary blues guitarist and vocalist who was originally discovered by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics when she was just 16 years old -- and she's essentially been on the road shredding guitar ever since. Joanne grew up in the Midlands region of the UK and built her guitar lexicon based on American blues and rock artists -- Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins, Freddie King, B.B. King, among others, and has become one of the most sought-after guitarists in Blues Rock.  Her latest album, Nobody's Fool, is out now and earlier this year, she released a live recording entitled Blues From The Heart Live, partnered with a concert film of the performance.  The live album was her second Billboard No. 1 record, matching the mark of her 2021 release, The Blues Album, which previously went to the top of the Billboard Blues chart.  Joanne is on a serious roll right now and chatted with Josh about her amazing background and the long journey to where she is today. Corey grew up in Vancouver, WA, not too far from Portland, Oregon, where he would head to catch the latest and greatest shows. But this athlete turned performing artist and songwriter started out in a low-key fashion, writing lyrics and crafting songs in the quiet of his own room, still unsure of his own future in music but very confident he had something special to share.  Having moved to LA in 2016, he has opened for and toured with a number of massive artists since then including Justin Bieber, with whom he has developed a personal and professional relationship. Peter owns and runs the Brooklyn Bowls (NYC, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Nashville) as well as the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, which he acquired and re-opened in 2012. He is also the founder of the Lockn' Music Festival in Arrington, VA and is the publisher of Relix Magazine which also owns the website jambands.com.  He also created Fare Thee Well, the 50th Anniversary Grateful Dead shows in 2015.  Peter is also involved in a variety of non-profit organizations and sits on the Board of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Peter's new book documents his life in Live Music, from Wetlands Preserve in New York City in the 90s to the Brooklyn Bowls and what it means to put on over 10,000 shows throughout his illustrious career. Peter is that special brand of human that sees both the Big Picture as well as the all the little details that make shows special for both fans and performers alike. His vast imagination and enthusiasm coupled with his massive love of live music, performance and The Show is what makes Peter the most unique presence in Rock Music today. Welcome to Roadcase!!  Madison Cunningham is a native of Southern California and a two-time Grammy nominated artist whose latest effort, "Wednesday," is in the running for Best Folk Album for the 2022 Grammys.  And to further solidify her genre-spanning artistry, she was nominated in the Best Americana Album category for her "Where Are We Now" album in 2019.  Her development as an artist -- having been homeschooled in a fairly religious household, and not having been exposed to popular music heroes until her late teens -- gave Madison a unique perspective to build her guitar skills and artistry from a place all her own. Her music -- an eclectic mix of rock, classical elements, folk, and jazz -- gains even further texture by the strength of her gorgeous voice.  Telling her own story in her songs, and working with such greats as Chris Thile and Andrew Bird along the way, Madison continues to be an integral part of the "new Laurel Canyon sound" that has been influencing many amazing artists from within the heart of the Los Angeles music scene for years now. Welcome to Roadcase!!  Tré Burt is an exceptional folk artist -- new on the scene -- with a truly inspiring personal story of perseverance, struggle and determination.  His latest album and sophomore effort, "You, Yeah, You," was released back in August on Oh Boy Records, and is a wonderful collection of songs and stories not to be missed.  Tré was been picked up by Oh Boy in late 2019, and given a personal stamp of approval by the late John Prine, which was, in Tré's words, "life changing."  2021 was also an exceptional year for Tré, having been asked to perform at Newport Folk Festival with many of his heros, where he put in a striking debut performance that he said gave him the confidence to rise to another level.  His recent Fall tour in support of Shakey Graves and Nathaniel Rateliff is direct evidence of a fulfilling new direction.  Tré is headed out on tour beginning this week, February 14, with both headlining dates and in support of Watchhouse (Andrew Marlin), and then heads to Europe for a six-week stint.  The future is bright for Tré and his story is uber-compelling.  So hop aboard the Roadcase bus to learn about his amazing new artist, Tré Burt.  It's gonna be a great ride!!
