SBT - Sutra Studies - The Dhammapada The Dhammapada(verses of buddhadharma) is a collection of sayings of the Buddha in verse form and one of the most widely read and best-known Buddhist scriptures. The original version of the Dhammapada is in the Khuddaka Nikaya, a division of the Pali canon of Theravada Buddhism. The Buddhist scholar and commentator Buddhaghosa explains that each saying in the collection was made on a different occasion in response to a unique situation that had arisen in the life of the Buddha and his monastic community. His translation of the commentary, the Dhammapada Atthakatha, presents the details of these events and is a rich source of legend for the life and times of the Buddha. The Dhammapada contains 423 verses in 26 chapters. We’ll be covering its 26 chapters within 26 weeks.

Mind-training is a Mahayana Buddhist practice focused on the cultivation of altruism, understanding, and compassion. Mind-training, or more appropriately ‘heart-training’, is a practice utilized by all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. First brought to Tibet by the Indian Buddhist Master Atisha in the eleventh century CE, mind-training is a practice with the aim of cultivating and attaining bodhichitta, defined as the altruistic mind of awakening. The term bodhichitta is comprised of two words, bodhi (Skt.) meaning awakened, and citta (Skt.) meaning mind; together they are commonly translated as, awakened mind or mind of enlightenment.

The ‘the six perfections’ and ‘the perfection of wisdom’ although being a renowned practice of the Mahayana traditions, actually has its roots in original Nikaya Buddhist tradition and can be found in the Pali cannon, taught as ten perfections. However, within the Mahayana, the perfections become foundational, and the central practice of the bodhisattva. The Mahayana’s unique presentation of the perfections originates from the Prajnaparamita or Perfection of Wisdom Sutras. Mahayanists assert the perfections as the only practice or training which leads to full buddhahood. Because of this, the perfections are often referred to as ‘the great mother’ or ‘the mother of the buddhas’, portraying the perfections as the ‘source’ or ‘womb’ of buddhahood.

Buddhism considers patience as one of the most important and versatile antidotes. However, in Buddhism, patience is more akin to non-action. Where one is advised to become ‘a block of wood’ at the onset of disturbing stimuli, Meaning, in Buddhism patience pertains to non-reactivity. So, we are talking about gaining control over our reactivity...

Generosity is the most prescribed practice within all traditions of Buddhism. The practice includes the sharing of resources, protection, care, love, one’s time, and oneself; but revered most is the sharing of the Buddha’s teachings. I often think the cultivation of meritorious qualities like generosity are misunderstood, with many seeing it as similar to making deposits of goodness into a bank to pay for future rewards. However, according to the 8th century Indian Buddhist Master Shantideva, the cultivation of generosity is not so much about earning goodness, but instead is about reducing our miserliness and attachment to worldly concerns.

Our Mindful Diet Practice is aimed at cultivating and maintaining healthy and balanced dietary habits. This practice is a part of our Skillful Living Teaching Series and our Skillful Living Lifestyle. Which is comprised of the 10 tenets of a wholesome spiritual life. The fifth tenet being 'Eat well' – to move towards a healthier and more balanced diet, embracing moderation while becoming aware of the spiritual and healing dimensions of food. I recommend moving towards a more plant-based whole-food diet focused on consuming ‘living foods’ (fresh, colorful, and vibrant fruits and vegetables). Our Mindful Diet practice is comprised of aspirations and mantras that serve as instruction and support for our mindful diet practice. They’re recited each morning, and when needed.

Six Perfections (Skt. prajnaparamita) - The perfection of wisdom. The practiceof the perfection of wisdom is the primary practice of the bodhisattva.
Bodhichitta - The altruistic mind of awakening. Bodhichitta is perhaps the single most important aspect of the Mahayana path. The term bodhichitta is comprised of two words, bodhi (Skt.) meaning awakened, and citta (Skt.) meaning mind; together they are commonly translated as, awakened mind or mind of enlightenment. The principle of bodhichitta is comprised of the two aspects of aspiration and intention, the aspiration to awaken, and the altruistic intention to do so for the sake of others. In other words, bodhichitta is the altruistic aspiration and determination to awaken in order to benefit others.

Generally, Secular Buddhism is focused on the earliest Buddhist teachings, referred to as the EBTs, which some believe are the most authentic teachings of the Buddha. Therefore, Secular Buddhism is based strongly on the Theravada Tradition of Buddhism. The idea of a secular Mahayana path began to emerge when members of my sangha started asking for bodhisattva vows. When I investigated their motivations, I found their intentions were pure, they wished to focus their path on the Mahayana ideal of awakening for the benefit of others...

The term bodhisattva is comprised of two words, bodhi (Skt.)–meaning awakening, and sattva (Skt.)–meaning, essence, being, or spirit; together they can be translated as one who possesses the mind of awakening. The Mahayana tradition (often referred to as the Bodhisattva Vehicle) is founded upon the bodhisattva ideal. The bodhisattva is an advanced practitioner (monastic or lay) who possesses the altruistic aspiration and determination to awaken in order to free all beings from suffering.

This concluding teaching summarizes our series on the Buddha’s model of the nature of reality. What truly sets Buddhism apart from all other traditions is the Buddha’s unique model of the nature of reality. It is an often complex model that mirrors a complex universe, a model established upon the following topics of karma, dependent origination, emptiness, and the two truths.

The five aggregates exemplify the psycho/physical aspects that all beings share. Here the term aggregate refers to a collection or group. These aggregates should not be seen as individual static containers in which their unique components reside, but instead as five dynamic and ever-changing processes, continuously arising and ceasing in every moment. It is through the continuous interaction and convergence of these collections of aggregates that our current experience of existence is made possible.

The Buddha’s teaching on ‘our true nature’ is the single most unique aspect of his teachings and that which clearly distinguishes it from all other forms of Indian thought. This topic, although potentially one of the most challenging aspects of the Buddha’s teachings to fully understand, is clearly the most important pertaining to the attainment of liberation. The Buddha taught a radical view of what constitutes a person, positing the individual not as a static autonomous entity, but as a dynamic process in a state of constant change.

This is the second teaching from our Sunday retreat - Sunday, 25th, 2021
Top 10 Meditation Tips
#10) Put comfort and quality over duration - It’s the quality of your meditation that’s important, not the duration of each session. A short, deeply engaged meditation is far more beneficial than an hour of conceptual chatter forcing yourself to sit in discomfort
#9) Keep your practice personal - Always remember that this is your mind and your practice, you need to explore and discover how meditation best works for you, eventually cultivating your own personal style of practice based on many hours of experience on the cushion. For as our minds are unique to each one of us, so too must be our meditation
#8) See meditation as a well-deserved timeout - meaning, instead of seeing meditation as just one more chore on your long list of healthy things to do, see it as a well-deserved timeout from your busy day. A chance to gather your thoughts and energy and revitalize yourself. See your meditation as cultivating fresh starts throughout your day
#7) Understand that unseen benefits are always occurring - regardless of how well you’re able to stay focused on your breath, the calmness cultivated in meditation profoundly affects your mind in countless subtle ways.
#6) Begin by establishing your intentions with a meditation aspiration I’ve shared my own below.
#5) Use a meditation checklist to make sure you’re engaging properly with your technique I’ve also shared this below
#4) Touch the meditative state as much as you can throughout your day – the fact is, the more often we engage in meditation the easier it is to enter and be productive in that state. This can be accomplished by engaging in frequent three-breath meditations between your formal meditation sessions
#3) Make up your mind to be in the present moment – for often we don’t harness our full attention and mechanically follow the breath without being fully present. Instead, increase the intensity of your focus to create an alert and bright mental state that’s clearly focused on the present moment
#2) Smile during your meditation – this brings positivity to your practice, and regardless if your smile is genuine or contrived, by simply applying the gesture it will affect your mood
#1) Make up your mind to enjoy each and every session

Sunday, April 4th- The topic of this teaching is ‘buddha nature’ The innate potential of all beings to awaken; or the mind’s innate potential for complete clarity; further understood as the emptiness of inherent existence of the mind. Buddha nature is often referred to as the essence of awakening or enlightened essence, for without it, enlightenment would not be possible.

Sunday, March 28th.
The topic of this retreat teaching is ‘bodhicitta (the mind of awakening) and the practice of ‘Mind Training’ (or as I like to call it ‘Heart Training’) training to become a more loving person. More specifically we will be studying Lama Tsongkhapa’s ‘Eleven-point method for generating bodhicitta’. These mind training contemplations are practiced within our Insight meditation and also during the day and as you meet others.

Secular Buddhism can be understood as an approach to the study and practice of the Buddha’s teachings aimed at clarifying and demystifying them by lifting them out of their presumed religious, mystical, and cultural context. Secular Buddhism can be understood as a more objective and rational approach to the Buddha’s teachings, seeking to reinterpret them through fresh eyes, skeptical not of the Buddha's words, but of the thousands of years of interpretation and embellishment laden upon those teachings.

The Four Gifts is a daily practice of generosity that can be offered to the world throughout your day. The gifts of your stability, calmness, care, and happiness. Qualities that are contagious and bring out the best in others and in ourselves. This practice is especially beneficial for those who suffer from social discomfort. This practice is generally applied when engaging with others but can be utilized whenever you want to feel more centered.

Meditation aspiration With a deep appreciation for this precious life and a resolve not to waste it,
I now engage in meditation.
With a deep conviction in the vast benefits and importance of this practice,
I now engage in meditation.
With the wish to develop myself and uncover my full potential,
I now engage in meditation.
With the wish to gain mastery over my mind and emotions,
I now engage in meditation.
With the wish to bring peace, contentment, and genuine happiness to my life,
I now engage in meditation.
With the wish to awaken from mundane habitual existence,
I now engage in meditation.
With a mature resolve to persevere in spite of any obstacles that might arise,
I now engage in meditation.
~ Venerable Tenzin Tharpa
