I absolutely LOVE this episode with Linde Lambrechts, who has a Masters in Clinical Psychology, and is a Psychotherapist and Aware Parenting instructor. You may recognise her from my trilogy of Aware Parenting books, where she shared her beautiful stories. Linde talks about all kinds of topics in this episode, including reclaiming the beauty of our needs as parents. However, it's the stories she tells half way through the episode that brought us both to tears. She shares about what happened for her after being a beta reader of my latest book, 'All of Your Feelings are Welcome', and the incredible but very subtle and nuanced shifts she made in her presence as a parent, which led to some deeply moving and transformational effects. The stories were in response to aggression, which can be the hardest place for us as parents to embody this quality of loving but powerful presence, when our child is lashing out at us, their sibling, or another child. In this episode, I talk about why our yeses and noes are so important, how we disconnect from them growing up in The Disconnected Domination Culture, and how we can reclaim their power and beauty, and the safety that they bring to our lives. I'd love to emphasise again that this is NOT Aware Parenting. This reparenting series is based on The Marion Method. Our yeses and noes are our slug wisdom. Our innate body wisdom The DDC disconnects us from our our slug wisdom. As children growing up in The DDC, we often experience being shamed or punished for wanting what we want - our YESES. Telling us there's something wrong with our joy, excitement, and the fulfilment and satisfaction we receive from having, doing or being what we really want. As a result, we may be disconnected from even knowing what we want, let alone being willing for it, and asking for what we want. This is very common in mothers and leads to resentment and burn out. We also experience shaming and punishment when we try to say no what we don't want - our NOES. Telling us that our frustration and outrage is wrong, when in fact it's the natural response of our noes not being heard, and is the will energy that gets silted up when our no is not heard. As a result, we may feel flat, depressed, powerless, helpless. We may often say yes when we feel a no. The DDC sets us up to feel scared to truly stand in the power of our yeses. But the yeses are the way in which life comes into the world. Our noes are what keep us truly safe. How can we reclaim them? With The Marion Method: Loving phrases from our Inner Loving Presences and Life itself, welcome and celebrating our yeses and noes. Inner Loving Presence Process work, going back to painful times when our yes or no wasn't welcomed, and our Inner Loving Presences listening lovingly to our painful feelings. Reparative experiences of our yeses and noes being welcomed and celebrated, and our increasing experiences of deep fulfiment. Our willingness work, where we increasingly live from willingness, what we are wanting and willing for, which is an embodied YES, and seeing the power of that reflected in our experiences. Our will work, where we increasingly feel safe and free to say no when we have a no, including the power of our Neo No. Our Outer and Inner Loving Presence work, where our feelings of both excitement/joy and frustration/outrage are welcomed and we become increasingly comfortable with them in our bodies. In fact, from a MM perspective, I see life as a continual experiment, where every experience we have, we can see whether and what we had a yes or no to, so we gradually refine our choices. I'd love to emphasise again that this is NOT Aware Parenting. This reparenting series is based on The Marion Method. I came up with the concept and practice of the three types of feelings by integrating two philosophies: Aware Parenting, which includes what I call needs-feelings and healing-feelings. Nonviolent Communication, which includes what I call needs-feelings and thoughts-feelings. I'll explain more about this! But first, why is this important? Well, if we think that there is only one type of feeling, and the most apt response is the same to any feeling, we may miss the most apt response. It really is possible to get free from guilt! I'd love to emphasise again that this is NOT Aware Parenting. This reparenting series is based on The Marion Method. I'm so grateful to Marshall Rosenberg, who created Nonviolent Communication. It was from him, back in 2002, when my daughter was 9 months old, that I learnt about the true origin of guilt, and how it is simply a form of cultural conditioning. It's not an innate feeling. I also borrowed the term 'Domination Culture' from him. He in turn borrowed it from Walter Wink. I added 'Disconnected' to it, i.e. 'Disconnected Domination Culture', to emphasise that disconnection needs to happen in order for domination to happen. In contrast, in The Marion Method, I see our true nature as Love and Will - in other words, we are LOVE: deeply interconnected with all that is, and WILL: deeply powerful and connected with the power of Life, particularly through our yeses and noes. So, back to guilt! In this episode, I talk about how guilt is related to both Love--Hurts and Will-Hurts. Guilt has two functions: to coerce us into doing things, and to lead to uncomfortable feelings if we don't act as we think we 'should'. The first is related to will. The second to love. In comparison, with The Marion Method, we can transform self-coercion into acting from willingness, or being unwilling to do something. And we can transform the pain of self-judgment to deep self-compassion. Getting free from guilt is so life-changing, in ways that I explain in more depth. I'm so delighted to be starting the reparenting series. I'd love to make it very clear that this is NOT Aware Parenting. It's The Marion Method. However, it was profoundly influenced by Aware Parenting, and in some ways is like practicing Aware Parenting with ourselves. Aware Parenting of course includes the importance of honouring our own needs, having community, and listening to our own feelings, but does not include any particular processes – beyond prompts for inner reflection about our childhood and the importance of meeting our needs and expressing our feelings – about of how to do that. Just as the sleep series went alongside me editing my 'Sound Sleep and Secure Attachment with Aware Parenting' book, this series goes with my next book, 'All of Your Feelings are Welcome', which is a combination of The Marion Method and Aware Parenting, and is designed to support reparenting so that we can more easily practice Aware Parenting. This reparenting series also goes alongside the publishing of my oracle cards, which also include inner loving phrases, and a live round of my Inner Loving Presence Process Course, which is a part of The Marion Method. In this episode, I share about my journey as a researcher in infant development, and psychotherapist, and how I saw that practicing Aware Parenting was far more effective than waiting until adulthood and having therapy. However, in my own journey of mothering, and which I saw replicated when I became an Aware Parenting instructor nearly twenty years ago, I was seeing all the ways in which mothers were tending to their children in terms of the three aspects of Aware Parenting, but ignoring their own needs, judging themselves and their parenting, and being harsh with themselves when their own feelings from the past came up to be healed. So I developed the Inner Loving Presences and Inner Loving Presence Process work, which is the Love part of The Marion Method. There is also Will work and Conversations with Life in The Marion Method too. This work was not only Inspired by Aware Parenting. It was also influenced by Nonviolent Communication, by Marshall Rosenberg, Psychosynthesis by Roberto Assagioli (including the sub-personalities work) and The Field Project by Philip Golabuk. I'm so delighted to have Michael Rose, the father of our children, back on the podcast. He was a guest on episode 49. Michael is an Aware Parenting instructor, Tai Chi teacher, and RiverKeeper. In this episode, we share about Aware Parenting, and also about The Marion Method for reparenting. Michael includes perspectives from Tai Chi and from counselling adults. Also in this episode, there is more than the usual background noise of birds singing and dogs snoring. I'm sending love to any feelings that you might feel when you hear those noises. (When I experimented with taking those sounds out, all the life energy in our voices also went, so I left them in!) I invite you to experiment with being present with the sounds while you listen to our voices. Michael shares about his experience of being a part of the Mythopoetic Mens Movement in London in the 90s, and how it helped him practice Aware Parenting. We talk about how grief, crying, and love are interconnected, and how our capacity to cry and to grieve deeply affect our capacity to feel and offer love. I share about The Marion Method perspective of the three types of feelings, and why this is particularly important for adults, and how crying as a result of ongoing harsh thoughts-feelings is not actually healing. We talk about the research process of Aware Parenting, and listening to, and trusting, ourselves as well as our babies or children. Michael shares about his most recent experience doing more counselling training, and how that deepened his understanding of presence, and what presence people need from others in order to experience being safe to feel and express their feelings. Michael talks about the experience of how some dads can believe that being with children is tedious and boring, and how those thoughts and experiences can be transformed. We discuss the shift that can happen from listening to our baby or child's feelings being exhausting, to the experience of us increasingly being able to be present, and the experience being fulfilling and energising. I'm so grateful to have my dear friend and Level 2 Aware Parenting instructor colleague, Joss Goulden, for this final episode in the second sleep series. Joss shares in detail about the neurobiology of stress and trauma, and how that relates to sleep. We talk a lot about why it's so essential to be doing our own inner work and getting lots of support, so we can understand this information and yet be deeply compassionate with ourselves when we see our child dissociate before going to sleep, for example. Joss shares about how important it is as a parent to keep coming back to the principles of connection, warmth, and safety. We offer suggestions for how to feel more present and connected with our lovelies before sleep, including ways to tap into a sense of community, even if we're parenting on our own. As this very long sleep series draws to a close, in this episode, I share some quick sleep suggestions for parents of a baby, toddler, child, or teen. Babies, children, and teens need to be both tired and relaxed to sleep restfully. Relaxation is created in two ways: ~ through a sense of safety (which is met by having closeness, especially in the early years), ~ and by releasing any pent-up painful feelings that naturally bubble to the surface to be expressed when they are tired. If children don't feel safe, they won't feel relaxed, and will need to dissociate to go to sleep. If children have accumulated painful feelings bubbling to the surface that aren't released, they won't feel relaxed, and will need to dissociate to go to sleep. If they dissociate to fall asleep, the sleep is not likely to be restful. I'm so delighted that Carly Facius has returned to the podcast for the 4th time. She was also on episodes 149, 154, and 159. Carly is a mother of three, Registered Midwife, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, holds a Master of Primary Maternity Care, and is an Aware Parenting instructor. Carly starts off by sharing her own journey with sleep with her first baby, and how surprised she was that after being so connected with her intuition and trusting her body and baby for the pregnancy and birth and for the first four months, that for a week, she started following the concept of sleep windows. Living in Indonesia, with an Indonesian husband, all around her she saw something very different to the practices she'd read about online of helping babies sleep according to the clock. She really didn't enjoy that week. The intensity of the focus on sleep took her away from being present with her baby, and led her to think that there was something wrong with what she was doing, and that there was something wrong with her baby. After that week, she shifted her practice entirely, and felt so much more relaxed. She saw babies and children sleeping everywhere and anywhere in Indonesia and it made so much sense that the routine she'd created in that week wasn't helpful at all. We talk about co-sleeping, and 'bedtimes', and how common it is in a very high percentage of the world's population for babies and children to co-sleep and for there not to be early bedtimes. We also talk about how Aware Parenting makes it possible for everyone in the family to share a bed together, and to all sleep restfully, without the baby or child moving around restlessly, or needing to be in a particular position, eg. under a parent's arm or on top of the parent. She talks about what a difference it made for her when she shifted from Classical Attachment Parenting to Aware Parenting when her son was 18 months old, including her partner being able to support their son to go to sleep. Carly shares about her experience of listening to her third child's feelings since birth has made, especially on his sleep, including while consistently travelling. He slept peacefully, even with noise around, which was very different to tiptoeing away when her first baby was sleeping. She also enjoyed the freedom of her partner being able to support their baby to go to sleep right from early on. Carly also talks about her own experience of working with parents from all around the world and from a wide variety of parenting beliefs and practices, including from families who had been to sleep consultants prior, and how she supported to find ways that resonated with them in relation to sleep. We talk about the importance of parents listening in to their own yeses and noes in terms of what resonates with them about sleep theories and practices. Carly shares about the loveliness of knowing that with Aware Parenting, whatever we've done in the past, we can help our babies heal, and we can also heal from past experiences. She shares how her perspective on bedtimes has completely changed, and how she invites parents to focus on their own sleep. She says, "everyone's rested in my family." I'm so delighted that Kim Cousins came back on the podcast again. Kim was on episode 136 and 176 and I so highly recommend listening to those episodes if you haven't already. Kim is an Aware Parenting instructor who used to work in a perinatal mental health unit and has an abundance of experience of working with mothers and babies and families in general. In this episode, she also shares her own experience with sleep as a mother, with experience of being taught sleep training, then moving to Classical Attachment Parenting, and then to Aware Parenting. We'd love to send so much compassion if you are feeling exhausted and desperate for sleep, and if you have used sleep training. Throughout the episode, we highlight the importance of deep compassion for parents. The focus on this episode is knowing that there really is a third choice, and that parents really don't need to choose between secure attachment and sleep. Kim shares about how when her daughter (who is now 8), was a baby, she slept very little in the day, and Kim had someone visit from a sleep centre to teach some sleep training. Kim shares about how painful the experience was, and how she didn't want to do it afterwards, and thought that she was a failure and that her daughter wasn't sleeping because she was not reading tiredness signs accurately or missing sleep windows. Kim shares about all the pressure and the lack of support that led to a diagnosis of postnatal depression and anxiety. Kim dived into understanding attachment theory, and when her son was born, she practiced Classical Attachment Parenting with him. When he was 12 months old, he was waking lots at night and she decided to do my sleep course. She listened to him crying in her arms for about 45 minutes to an hour and he slept through the whole night! Kim shares moving stories about supporting mothers to listen to their babies crying in arms, and what a difference it makes to receive that kind of support. Kim also talks about the importance of support, our own inner work, and lots more fascinating parts of listening to feelings and the relationship of that with sleep. We recorded this episode a few weeks ago. I'm so delighted to share this episode with Laura Pires Brammer. Laura is an Aware Parenting instructor in Germany, and she shares about her experience with Aware Parenting and sleep. She talks about the powerful connection she had with Aletha Solter's book 'The Aware Baby', and now she started to listen to her baby's healing-feelings after only reading a couple of pages. Laura explains so beautifully how she saw the differences in her daughter once she started practicing Aware Parenting – being more present during the day, more relaxed while sleeping, and sleeping for longer periods, as well as the beautiful connection and eye contact between the two of them. Laura then shares about the process of increasing her understanding of Aware Parenting and embodying the practices more and more. Laura talks about the deep inner work that Aware Parenting invited her to do, as is common for most of us practicing this way of parenting. She shares about the contrast between feeling the power of having this information, and the powerlessness of at times not knowing how to put it into practice. We then talk about now common it is that, once we start practicing Aware Parenting, our own unexpressed feelings from our own childhood come bubbling up to be heard. Laura talks about how a lot of her feelings bubbled up in the night time, and how, as a result, she saw improvements in her own sleep. We talk about the difference in ourselves between the sleep after crying or laughing, and the sleep after distracting and dissociating. In this episode, I talk about the most common reason why babies and toddlers: wake up with the slightest noise or movement; wake up after one sleep cycle; wake up crying; are restless at night; wake frequently; appear to resist sleep; take a long time to go to sleep. If you're walking on eggshells to make sure they don't wake up, this might interest you. I explain how quiet and stillness can indicate relaxation or mild dissociation, why that's important for sleep, and how you can differentiate between the two. I share about needs-feelings and healing-feelings, and why being able to differentiate between these is also vital to understanding why it's really common for babies and children to be mildly dissociated before sleep. I talk about why we don't use the terms 'soothing' and 'self-soothing' in Aware Parenting, and how this relates to understanding mild dissociation. This little mini episode continues on from the last episode on cultural beliefs in relation to sleep. I talk about how looking at sleep practices all around the world helps us understand biological needs and cultural practices. Babies and children vitally need sleep, so it's adaptive for there to be many ways to support them to be able to go to sleep in whatever climate and culture, but these different ways have consequences in other areas. There are three reasons I find it helpful to look at the wider cultural context with sleep: To see how sleep practices are related to climate, culture, etc. To get free from shame and guilt about what others might think if you choose your own way. To see clearly what you might hvae been told is from a cultural belief rather than what's most helpful for babies and children. I also talk about the three main ways for sleep to happen: With closeness - eg movement, feeding, etc. -> frequent night waking. Without closeness - eg. swaddling, stillness, etc -> baby wakes up but doesn't call out. I'm grateful to one of my lovely mentees, who requested this episode, where I talk about some of the differences between Aware Parenting and Classical Attachment Parenting (a term created by me and adopted by Aletha Solter, the founder of Aware Parenting). Classical attachment parenting (CAP) refers to the original attachment parenting paradigm, which was first described by William and Martha Sears. The Aware Parenting (AwP) version of attachment parenting has several key differences from this original version. In this episode I talk about: Why people commonly make the change from CAP to AwP (frequent night waking being one of them). The three main differences between CAP and AwP. What people often notice the effects are of moving from CAP to AwP. These effects can include: Babies, toddlers and children sleep more restfully and calmly. If there are two parents, everyone can get their needs more. Clarity about understanding when to offer loving limits and why they're so important. She also talks about a challenging experience she had with her daughter as a baby around breastfeeding, and yet, how her daughter now deeply trusts her body in relation with food. In addition, she highlights how much support mothers need in these challenging situations in relation to breastfeeding, and how much understanding about birth trauma and babies' crying can help in these situations. In this episode, I talk about when children use have a soft toy, blanket or other object as a control pattern. This might be something they use to suppress their feelings when going to sleep or during the day when feelings bubble up. I explain about how they used to be known as 'transitional objects' in Winnicott's work, and how we see them differently in Aware Parenting. I also share my own experience of having a bunny as a control pattern for many years, and the touching experience I had in my early twenties. This is part of a series of episodes where I refer to topics in my new best-selling book, 'I'm Here and I'm Listening', and I read a story shared from a child's perspective. In this episode, I talk about the process of helping a child move out a freeze state (which in Aware Parenting we tend to refer to as dissociation, or a control pattern) and back into connection with their body and feelings. Once they do that, they can then express the feelings they were needing to suppress or dissociate from, and return to calm presence. I've always seen control patterns as like frozen feelings. Our role as parents is to offer the warmth and safety required to our child can experience those frozen feelings melting into flowing feelings, which can then flow out, generally in the form of crying or raging, but sometimes as laughter. To do this, we need to be relatively present in our own bodies, to support them to know that they are safe to become present in their own body, to feel and then express their feelings. Dissociation can show up in a myriad of ways, including thumb or finger sucking, dummy/pacifier use, repetitive nose picking or hair twirling, screens, eating when not hungry, and so on. In this episode, I share about what we can do as parents to help our child move out of the suppression of feelings into expression. Long gone are the days where parents who wanted to leave the park were told to just walk away and say "bye!" to their child. However, it can be so common for us as parents to feel really powerless when we want to leave the park and our child doesn't want to. This can often correspond with times when we're hungry or tired, and our own feelings can easily bubble up and out into responses we later regret. Putting ourselves in our child's shoes at these times can help us be less likely to respond in harsh ways. Free play, explorative play, these are such innate needs for children, and they're ways that they make sense of the world, explore new abilities, making connections, and release stress. For our hunter-gatherer ancestors, children would have been playing freely in these ways a lot. Valuing both our needs and theirs helps us be more likely to feel compassionately connected when we go into the situation of eliciting their cooperation to leave the park. Attachment play, a core part of Aware Parenting, is a beautiful way to create connection, help your child feel deeply valued and cared about, while also eliciting cooperation. There is an episode called 'Go away" from early on in The Aware Parenting Podcast, AND I felt called to record another one. That's partly because one of my favourite parts in my new best-selling book 'I'm Here and I'm Listening' is where we see this from a child's perspective. In fact, when parents ask about helpful responses to their crying child saying "Go away!" I often ask them to reflect back on a time in their own childhood when they had a lot of big feelings bubbling and they shouted "Go away!" Did they really want their parent to go away? Or would they have loved them to have stayed lovingly present with their big feelings? I invite you to reflect on that, too! When children are moving out of the fight, flight or freeze response, they need to know that they are physically and emotionally safe, so that they no longer need to try to protect themselves and can let go into the resolution of that response and the release of those feelings. Children need the safety of an adult's presence to really know that they are safe. If we leave them alone when they're raging, they may stop, but when we look closer, it's likely because they have dissociated from those feelings. Of course this is a really nuanced process, where we play with the balance of attention, which is providing physical and emotional safety in the present so that they can revisit stressful or traumatic experiences from the past. This requires our attunement and listening to exactly the amount of closeness which will help them feel safe so they can move into resolution, without overriding their need to feel powerful, which is also an essential part of the healing process. In this episode, I talk about how to help children who have learnt to eat to suppress their feelings. This follows on from the last episode about helping babies who have learnt to suppress their feelings, and the one before that, about how babies and children learn to feed and eat to suppress their feelings in the first place. After the last episode, I felt called to share more details about how things get in the way of children's innate body wisdom. If our aim is wanting our child to make the most optimal food choices based on their bodily sensations as well as information from us and from their own prior experience about whether they enjoyed the food and how they felt afterwards, then knowing what can get in the way of that can be helpful, whilst also being compassionate with ourselves that we live in a culture that is set against us being deeply connected with our bodies and that it's hard not to be part of that. I talk about a number of different things, such as shaming, food as rewards, advertising, family stress around meals, shoulding, using food to suppress feelings, past trauma, powerlessness and lots more, and each case, I include suggestions for how we can ameliorate these effects. I also offer parents to practice lots of self-compassion, attachment play and presence. I absolutely love that Clare Louise Brumley, PhD, has returned to the podcast. She was on episode 135 about an evolutionary perspective on sleep. She is an Aware Parenting instructor as well as registered nutritionist and Integrative Medicine Practitioner and she did her PhD on this topic. At the end of this series on the effects of birth, I wanted to share an episode about how wonderful birth can be, and the effects of that on a family. She also talks about the power of being willing to receive support, and what an opportunty birthing can be for us in that. She shares about what it's like coming into parenting a newborn having had a powerful, transformative birthing experience. I share about my experience of birth and what a beautiful start it was to be practicing Aware Parenting. Carly shares about the expansion of capacity to tune in to your baby that can then happen and all the after effects of empowering births. We also talked about how important it is for parents who do have a stressful or traumatic birth to be so deeply compassionate with themselves when the whole process goes a bit awry. Carly explains that a lot of the common challenges in the early weeks and months often aren't as evident when people have an empowering birth experience. Birth can be a deeply transformative experience, both for women who give birth, but also to be alongside the birthing woman, or be an adoptive parent, there are so many ways for transformation to occur. Carly also talks about how she supports parents so they are more likely to have a powerful and transformative life experience, particularly in terms of undoing conditioning around knowing and asking for what they need and understanding how powerful they are. We also link this to Aware Parenting and helping children stay connected with their inner knowing and Carly talks about how we can model that to them while we're pregnant with them. Shelley offers lots of examples of tangible ways you can see that your child is aiming to heal from their birth and what you can do as a parent to support and facilitate that process. In today's episode I talk with Adrienne Harper-Pike, who is an Aware Parenting instructor who also works in the deaf/blind community as a social worker, works with queer people and their families, and works with families with multiples, including twins, triplets and higher order births. Please note that we discuss things that might help you connect with painful past experiences, including the journey to conceiving through IVF, pregnancy complications, birth and postnatal trauma and complications as well as early separation between parents and babies. Adrienne shares her story of coming to Aware Parenting, which began when her daughter asked her to heal some of her birth trauma through play. She also talks about her journey with IVF and the stressful and traumatic experiences during pregnancy and during and after the birth or her premature twins and how that affected her – including with postnatal anxiety and depression, and guilt, shame and worry – as well as the babies and her partner. Adrienne talks about the huge healing they have all done since then, and the hope this gives to other families about what is possible. She talks about how the system isn't set up to support parents to heal so that they can support their babies or children to heal. Adrienne goes on to share specific examples of how her children have indicated that they were healing from their experiences in utero, during birth and after birth, and what she and her partner did to support them. In this episode about communicating with babies, I talk with Carly Facius who is a Registered Midwife, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and holds a Master of Primary Maternity Care and is an Aware Parenting instructor. Carly starts off sharing about how Aware Parenting supporting mothers to have an emotional intimacy with themselves and their needs, and then goes on to talk about the similarities between being with a birthing woman as a midwife and being with a baby or child who is expressing big feelings. She then shares about how aware and sentient babies are, right from in utero, and the experiences she's had which deeply confirmed that, particularly while working as a midwife in Bali. Babies communicating in utero, during the birth, and after birth. She talks about the ways in which parents can talk to their baby in utero and during birth and if they haven't done that, knowing that it is never too late to communicate in these ways. We also discuss the power for both parent and baby in the parent narrating about what is going on throughout the day. We also talk about guilt and how important it is to put down what I call the guilt sticks both during pregnancy and after birth, trusting that babies can heal from any stress they have experienced. As a preface I'd like to say two things about this episode: Firstly, this is about The Marion Method rather than Aware Parenting, although it is inspired and informed by Aware Parenting and I do talk about Aware Parenting in the episode. In this episode, I share two examples of where I healed from physical pain through connecting with feelings related to my birth experiences. The first was just before the Gabor Maté episode. I talk about how emotional and physical pain can share a related emotional tone. I talk about the importance of the balance of attention for us as adults just as it is for babies and children. I talk about how we have an inbuilt movement towards healing from trauma, whether we are babies, children or adults. Aware Parenting offers ways to support babies and children in those innate processes. As adults, we can still heal, and there are many modalities with which we can do that. This can be reassuring for us to know that whatever our children get to heal from, they will still be invited to move towards healing as adults. In this episode, I talk with Shelley Clarke, who is an Aware Parenting instructor, CranioSacral Therapist and Marion Method Mentor. Please note that neither CranioSacral Therapy nor The Marion Method are Aware Parenting. Shelley shares about her experience of practicing Aware Parenting with her three children and how she first learnt about Hand in Hand Parenting when searching for gentle sleep solutions, and then heard about Aware Parenting too. She first found me and my work n 2017 by searching for 'parenting and Psychosynthesis' (I trained and worked as a Psychosynthesis Psychotherapist). She shares about the experience of starting Aware Parenting at different ages with her children, and starting from when her third child was born, as he shared his feelings about his birth. She also did more of her own healing process from her own experience as a baby. She talks about the power of listening to a baby's feelings when being lovingly supported with our own feelings, like she experienced and now offers to parents. From her first baby to her third baby, she became really comfortable with crying-in-arms. Shelley talks about her experience of learning about CranioSacral Therapy and training in it, and how a central part of it is somato-emotional release. As part of that, she has done many birth processes on her own experiences as a baby. She shares about what happens in her work as a CranioSacral Therapist when parents bring their babies with issues related to feeding, sleeping, tension, agitation and digestion. Often the babies will express feelings from their birth during the session. We discuss how Aware Parenting and CST both have a deep trust in the body's innate capacity to heal and return to homeostasis. Shelley shares lots of details about how to be with babies as they are healing from their birth and other experiences. I also reflect back on the time when my daughter was six and had some myofascial treatment and re-enacted her birth experience whilst expressing big feelings - and we discuss how children can also heal from their births, later on than in infancy - and how close to the surface those birth memories are for children as well as babies. Shelley shares an incredible experience of one of her children being a Messenger from Life - this is from The Marion Method, not Aware Parenting. In this episode, I introduce the new series on the effect of the pre and perinatal period of us as babies, children and adults. This fits alongside the upcoming publication of my book, The Emotional Life of Babies. In future episodes in this series, I'll be having conversations about healing from stress in utero, birth and the postnatal period for babies, children and adults, and the effect of not healing can have. I share about my own journey of realising how much my birthing experience, being born at 30 weeks and in an incubator for 6 weeks, affected my childhood and teenage years, and how, over the decades after that, I reconnected with feelings of grief, loneliness, powerlessness, terror, and the deep pain of my experiences not being understood. I talk about the difference between healing from the effects of our birth in adulthood compared to healing whilst a baby or child, with the support of our parents. I include the work of people like Stan Grof, Thomas Verny and Michel Odent, and the powerful effects their work had on me and my understanding of what babies experience. In this episode, I talk about my own recent experiences of lots of little stresses accumulating, the raging and crying that followed, and how it affected my sleep. I compare it to when I didn't get to complete the expression of some bid old feelings from the past a couple of days later, and waking up grumpy, with those feelings still at the surface. I liken this to what babies and children experience, both in terms of the effects of lots of small stresses, and also what can happen to their sleep when we listen to some of their feelings but they don't get to express all of the feelings. I'm so delighted that Sarah Mason came back on the podcast. Sarah is an Aware Parenting instructor and came to talk about babies and sleep in episode 132. This time she shared about toddlers and sleep. She talked about how she shifted beliefs in relation to bedtimes, and the effect that had. She also discussed the importance of us as parents tending to our own needs and feelings in relation to bedtimes. She brought in the understanding of the ways as parents we can unwittingly suppress our toddler's feelings during the day and how that affects sleep. She also shared so powerfully and movingly about her own inner healing in relation to her own early experiences and the profound effect that had on her daughter's healing and sleep. She included the powerful story of how her daughter healed from an early experience of being left before sleep (before Sarah knew about Aware Parenting). She talked extensively about the power and importance of mothers honouring their needs and how that can affect their toddler's sleep. In this episode, I talk about how our own capacity to be present in our bodies with each particular feeling affects our capacity to be present with our baby or child as they feel and express that feeling. In this episode I was so delighted to talk with Erin Dee and Kim Cousins, who are registered nurses who specialise in perinatal mental health. I LOVED the conversation so much and was in tears several times. They both share about their journey with Aware Parenting, and the difference it made in their own parenting, including with sleep, and how they then introduced it to mothers in the unit they work in. They talk about supporting the mothers with expressing their own feelings, and then having the emotional spaciousness to be able to listen to their babies' feelings, and then seeing the difference in their relaxation, connection, feeding and sleep. I loved the description one mother gave of their 'melty' baby after crying in arms! They share about the beautiful shifts they often see in breastfeeding when mothers are supported to listen to their baby's feelings and are supported to put themselves in their baby's shoes and connect with what they might be feeling. They talk about the changes - from mothers feeling stressed in relation to sleep, having their babies 'catnapping' - and then seeing the differences once they understand sleep and Aware Parenting and listening to feelings. We also talked about the bigger picture, about this culture and the normal needs for support and listening for mothers, and what a huge difference this makes to both mother and baby. I so enjoyed this episode, in which I talked with Clare Louise Brumley, an Aware Parenting instructor who has a background in nutrition and integrative medicine, whose PhD was on Evolutionary Medicine and Optimal Human Health. Clare Louise share about why an evolutionary perspective is important, sleep through an evolutionary lens, and the physiology of sleep and how the modern culture gets in the way. Interwoven through all of this, she talks about the stress response and Aware Parenting and the innate healing response. Our conversation covered a wide range of topics, from the sense of safety acquired from living and sleeping amongst a community of 30 or 40 people, the effect of electricity and other modern conveniences, and cots. In this episode, I talk with my dear friend and colleague, Helena Mooney, who is an Aware Parenting instructor and Hand in Hand instructor. She shares about her experience of starting off with Classical Attachment Parenting with her daughter, and how little sleep she had, and how exhausted she was. She shares about how weird she found Aware Parenting at first, and her unsureness in practicing it at the beginning, and how different it was from Classical Attachment Parenting. Then she talks about how that perception changed as she saw what a difference it made to her daughter's sleep. The change took a bit of a while because her daughter had a backlog of feelings, and she explains this process. Along with getting more sleep again, her daughter also stopped hitting once she started Aware Parenting. She then goes on to share about what a huge difference she experienced with her second child and sleep, starting practicing Aware Parenting at the beginning; she expresses the difference in sleep between the two of them being "night and day." In this episode, I talk with Maru Rojas, an Aware Parenting instructor in the UK who shares about her very different experience with sleep with her first child and second child. The first time around, her baby was very restless all night long or was feeding for most of the night and she had very little sleep. She learnt about Aware Parenting and gradually, sleep changed. The second time around, she started with Aware Parenting from the beginning and her son slept peacefully and for much longer periods. She talked about the time it took to support her daughter to 'catch up' with expressing feelings that had been repressed, the trauma she experienced of having so little sleep, and how she called for help from her mum to support her with listening to feelings with her second child. She also offers parents the invitation to listen in deeply to themselves and to create a sleep set-up that works for their unique family. We also talk about the relief of not needing to try to get babies to sleep quickly, why there's no such thing as 'overtired' in Aware Parenting, and the ease of babies sleeping peacefully when there's noise around or we need to move them whilst they're sleeping. In this episode of The Aware Parenting Podcast, I answer 12 questions from parents, starting with a 9 year old, going back through decreasing ages to a 6 month old. In this very special episode, we interview Gabor Maté about his most recent book, 'The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness and Healing in a Toxic Culture.' We so loved talking with Gabor and hearing him share his wisdom about his willingness to be vulnerable, the four needs of children, and how people are desperate for information about trauma and healing. He also shared about attachment and authenticity, and the effects of needing to make a choice between these two as a child on later physical and emotional health. He talked about mothers, and how so often girls are given the responsibility to take care of others and how mothers are then often given the task of mothering both their children and their partner. He explained why virtually all trauma is intergenerational, and makes a key suggestion for healing intergenerational trauma. He also spoke of the effects of the trauma of colonisation in Australia, Canada and other countries. He talked about tantrums and what he invites parents to do if their child is having tantrums. He also spoke about the schooling system and its intentions. He explained that it is unnatural for children to be away from their parents for the whole day, and what schools need to do if children being at school is necessary, so that children have emotional safety and therefore stay connected with their natural curiosity to learn. He shared the reason for the subtitle of his book, and also talked about his stance on children and screens. In this special episode, we have a very important guest, Aletha Solter. PhD, founder of Aware Parenting and The Aware Parenting Institute. As a developmental psychologist, Aletha includes the effect of stages of development in Aware Parenting. In this episode, Aletha talks about two things: 1. Myths about typical behaviours at different ages that Aware Parenting helps to dispel, including the following myths: - sleep regressions during infancy - it's 'normal' for toddlers to hit and bite - it's 'normal' for teenagers to rebel 2. She also offers accurate information about developmental stages that helps parents who are implementing the Aware Parenting approach in each of the three aspects - attachment-style parenting, non-punitive discipline and the prevention of, and healing from, stress and trauma. We emphasise the difference that happens when are are not willing to judge ourselves or pick up the guilt sticks, and not being willing to say things like, “I shouldn’t have done that” or “I’m a naughty mummy” or “what I did was wrong.” We offer ways to take responsibility and apologise without judging ourselves. Lael shares about how she helped her daughter heal from birth trauma with Aware Parenting, and the tangible signs in her baby’s behaviour that showed her that the trauma was being released. Marion talks about her academic and psychotherapeutic background before becoming a mother, and how Aware Parenting resonated with all that she’d learnt. Lael talks about the clear differences she saw between her two older children and her youngest child, related to Aware Parenting. Marion shares about how she realised that her daughter had feelings to express, and how she knew that her daughter’s expressing her feelings in her arms was helpful. Episode 52: Loss and death by Marion Rose, PhD.

In today’s episode we talk about boundaries, or what Marion calls “saying no.” We explain the innate capacity we all have to know when we feel a ‘yes’ and when we feel a ’no,’ and how growing up in a colonised culture disconnects us from easily knowing and expressing our “no’s.” We share about how experiences of having love removed when we said “no”, or being shamed or punished, lead us to feel uncomfortable with clearly speaking our “no” as adults. Lael talks about inviting parents to reflect on their imprints from what happened in their families growing up, and how that is impacting them now. Lael also shares reasons why parents can be reluctant to say, “no” to their children, which can include knowing that saying “no” will help children connect with either disappointment about not getting their needs met, or bigger feelings that were causing unenjoyable behaviour in the first place. We both talk about how reconnecting with and befriending our childhood experiences of powerlessness and outrage is an important stage of the journey. Marion talks about the difference between when we simply don’t want to do something and when we want to stop something unenjoyable from happening, either with a child or an adult. In the first scenario, we might simply say “no” to our child or another adult when we don’t want to do something. In the second scenario, we can set a Loving Limit with a child who is hitting, biting or throwing - (saying “no” to the behaviour and “yes” to the feelings that are causing the behaviour), and we can express a Neo No to an adult. As we were talking, we both get really passionate about how important it is for mothers to reclaim our capacity to say a Neo No within the domination system, particularly in birth and parenting.
