With the 2025 WorldTour season just around the corner, Liam and Simon are joined by Dan Bigham, Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe’s head of engineering, to discuss what the big tech trends might be.
Starting with the question of whether there’s any low hanging aero fruit left to pick, the conversation moves onto the ongoing controversy over the relationship between speed and safety in professional bike racing.
The trio then discuss the UCI Hour Record, whether breaking the 60km mark is possible and how it could be done.
Wrapping up, Liam and Simon turn the lens on themselves and ask whether Dan thinks there’s anything cycling media could do to help audiences understand complicated topics and cut through marketing claims.

BikeRadar’s testers are in the fortunate position to be able to test the latest bikes. But reviewing bikes and making a significant financial investment to buy one, are two very different things.
The gravel discipline has expanded rapidly over the last decade and the bikes which fall under this dusty umbrella range from aero racers to monster adventure rigs. So with gravel bikes becoming ever more numerous, choosing what to buy is getting harder.
We gave Jack Luke, Warren Rossiter and Liam Cahill a tricky task. Choose one bike which they could realistically buy and one that would require a significant win on the horses or lottery.
Given each rider has a very different take on gravel, there were a wide range of options brought to the table.

Mountain biking in Wales faces an uncertain future, thanks to cost savings at NRW – National Resources Wales.
With NRW’s budgets flatlining in the face of inflationary pressures, the government agency has statutory responsibilities to maintain, forcing cuts to leisure facilities. This includes the maintenance of Wales’ extensive network of official trails.
Without maintenance, the organisation may need to close trails for safety reasons putting trail centres, and unofficial (or wild) trails also at risk.
In this episode we talk to Robin Grant, founder and president of The UK MTB Trail Alliance about the state of the UK trail network, and the problems being faced in Wales.

Fastest Known Times (FKTs) are individual time trials raced over typically mixed-terrain ultra-endurance routes.
A long-established racing format in the thru-hiking and backpacking worlds, cycling FKTs have surged in popularity in recent years.
In today's episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, custodian of fastestknowntimes.org.uk and ultra-endurance racing legend Molly Weaver explains what FKTs are, their rules and how to take one for yourself.
Weaver turned pro in 2015, riding for Matrix Fitness Pro Cycling, before wrapping up her pro road career in 2018 riding for Trek-Drops.
Weaver has gone on to become a legend in the ultra-endurance scene, competing in this year’s Atlas Mountain Race, the Trans Pyrenees, the GB Divide, the Highland Trail 550 and more.
At the time of recording, she holds no fewer than eight UK FKTs. She’s also one of our only guests to have their own Wikipedia page.

Manufacturers of carbon rims are increasingly adopting hookless rims, citing benefits such as lower weight, improved aerodynamics and reduced manufacturing costs.
Last week, though, on stage five of the 2024 UAE Tour, Thomas De Gendt suffered a high-speed crash while – seemingly – just riding along.
De Gendt’s wheels, a set of Zipp’s 353 NSW carbon wheels with hookless rims, were initially deemed to be at fault, but can we be sure about what actually happened, and could there be more to this story than meets the eye?
In this episode of the BikeRadar podcast, deputy editor, Jack Luke, and senior technical writer, Smon von Bromley, discuss the incident and what it might mean for the future of wheel and tyre tech on road bikes.

It’s also an Olympic year, and so perhaps we’ll see a few new XC race bikes propped up in the pits as the season starts, ready for a full release as the Paris Games get a little closer.

Hill climb racing showcases radical, often verging on excessive, ways to save weight from bikes in the battle against gravity.
This year’s UK National Hill Climb Championships on the unusually long 4km ascent of the Struggle, in the Lake District, was no different.
But the tech trends we noticed on the Cumbrian hillside show weight might not be absolutely everything, even when racing uphill.

Here, fellow senior technical editor Ashley Quinlan and BikeRadar video presenter Tom Law sit down with Warren to hash out the top seven things (we had to stop him there!) he’d rather were consigned to the history books.
We cover everything from helmet covers to cycling’s enduring problem with the use of arguably unnecessary plastics.

When we test a bike, it’s easy to give a nod of approval to a frame, fork, drivetrain or brake, but it’s often the finishing touches that really ‘make’ a bike.
In this episode, senior technical editor Tom Marvin, digital writer Nick Clark and video presenter Tom Law pick out the components that rarely hog the limelight, but really deserve some time in the spotlight. In turn, this is an appreciation of the rarely praised product manager – the person who’s ridden test mules and studied OEM spec offerings and picked some praiseworthy components.

While Mathieu van der Poel recently secured his first Paris-Roubaix victory, the great Fabian Cancellara won the last of his three cobbles just over a decade ago.
Though the fundamentals remain the same, road bike tech has come a long way in the meantime.
Spartacus won aboard a Trek Domane 6-Series – an endurance road bike designed specifically to tame cobbles.
The Flying Dutchman, on the other hand, rode a Canyon Aeroad CFR – the same aero road bike he recently piloted to victory in Milan-San Remo, with only a few minor modifications.
With that in mind, devoted road bike nerds, Jack Luke, Simon von Bromley and Ashley Quinlan, sat down to compare the two bikes and discuss the major leaps in Roubaix-winning tech of the past 10 years.

In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, we have a quick look back at four key bikes that have launched in the past week.
There's the new Giant Reign, which has seen an overhaul to bring it right up to date, as well as Ridley's new Grifn – a bike that blurs the line between road and gravel.
In addition, we talk about the new Scott Lumen eMTB. The top-spec model comes in at an eye-watering £14,699, but don't worry, there are cheaper versions too.

We’re well into smart trainer season now, which means Simon von Bromley, BikeRadar’s senior technical writer, has been doing his annual tests of the latest models. As ever, Simon has come out the other side of this testing with some more strongly held opinions – this time, it’s that ERG mode (an optional setting used by smart trainers to automatically adjust the resistance to match your cadence, to hold you at a prescribed power output during a workout) is overrated.
But why does he think that, and does anyone else agree? In this episode of the BikeRadar podcast, Simon sits down with Ashley Quinlan, BikeRadar’s senior technical editor, to explain how ERG mode can potentially affect your pedalling style, why this matters, and what you might consider doing instead.

SRAM took the fight to Shimano in 2021 when it launched Rival eTap AXS – a 12-speed, wireless electronic groupset at a relatively affordable price point.
After years of telling us that 105 Di2 wouldn’t happen, Shimano was forced to react and create a rival for Rival eTap AXS. And now it has – Shimano 105 Di2 R7120 launched earlier this year.
Having had plenty of time to put both groupsets through their paces, BikeRadar’s senior technical editor, Warren Rossiter, sits down with senior technical writer, Simon von Bromley, to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each system, and see if they can crown one the king of budget electronic road groupsets.

In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, deputy editor Jack Luke sits down with former pro-cyclist-turned-presenter, Adam Blythe.
Blythe is famously unafraid to air his opinions on tech, notably singling out Aqua Blue Sport’s decision to race on 3T’s 1x-specific Strada bikes as a key reason for his former team’s downfall in 2018. Following the recent release of the new 3T Strada ICR – which is available in a 2x configuration – We asked Adam whether he thought 1x will ever offer a competitive advantage.
Blythe also comes from a generation where riders were able to customize bikes to suit their riding, and by extension, personalities. In the podcast, Blythe bemoans the homogeneity of the modern peloton and highlights who he thinks are today’s most stylish riders on and off the bike. Finally, we hear his personal view on the UCI tech rules today.
Blythe shares his thought on whether he thinks 1x will ever offer a competitive advantage, the homogeneous aesthetic of tech in the pro peloton today (and why he thinks that’s a bad thing), who he thinks is the most stylish rider on and off the bike, and his thoughts on UCI tech rules.

Shimano 105 saw an eagerly-awaited update in 2022. In came Di2 electronic shifting and 12-speeds (in a disc brake-only flavour to boot), while mechanical shifting 105 got left behind.

In this episode of the BikeRadar podcast, digital writer Jack Evans explores what’s powering the popularity of electric bikes.
Jack asks Specialized Globe and Brompton why they’re investing in electric bike technology, while Emily Sinclair from cycling charity Sustrans and Selaine Saxby MP explain their support for ebikes.
Meanwhile, Saul Leiken from Specialized Globe makes the case for electric cargo bikes as an alternative to cars in towns and cities. Brompton’s head of design, Will Carley Smith, says going electric was an easy decision for the brand, but incorporating an electric motor into a compact folding bike proved trickier.
Sustrans Cymru liveable cities and towns officer Emily Sinclair tells Jack about a Welsh government-funded scheme that loans electric bikes to people for free.
Conservative MP for North Devon Selaine Saxby is a keen ebike user. She says the All Party Parliamentary Group for Cycling and Walking, which she co-chairs, advocates more financial support for people to buy electric bikes.

Where the design of last year’s Custom Road was, as the name suggests, focussed on allowing customers to configure the bike to their specific needs, the Melee is “purpose-built for speed”, and will be available in a more typical range of seven sizes.
In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, deputy editor Jack Luke sits down with ENVE’s vice president of product and brand, Jake ENVE, to take a deep dive into the tech and design behind the Melee.

Will the Chris Froome’s of the future stare at their stem for live aerodynamic data and other biometric data? All this and more in this edition of the BikeRadar podcast.

‘The rules’ is an oft-cited unofficial code of conduct for cyclists that, among other things, dictates which cycling accessories are deemed acceptable.
In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, Jack Luke and Simon von Bromley encourage you to throw off the oppressive shackles of fashion and embrace a cycling life that is more practical (and, possibly, even faster) with these 8 criminally uncool cycling accessories.
From the humble and misunderstood kickstand to the much-misaligned saddle bag, the pair throw caution to the wind and reveal their true inner dorky selves. The campaign to #freetheminipump starts here.

The cause of much debate for riders who fondly remember the early years of mountain biking, we call in two of our in-house experts from CyclingPlus and MBUK to debate whether gravel riding is just mountain biking from the 90s.

Has gravel riding backfilled the void left by the progression of mountain biking tracks and tech? Or are we looking at something new altogether?

Where is your hard-earned cash best spent? And where should you save? Or should you buy a cheaper bike and spend the rest on fun? All is revealed in this week's episode of the BikeRadar Podcast.

In this new 4-part series, our senior road technical editor Warren discusses the bikes that made their mark on him over the past 40 years. From the bike that first piqued his interest in cycling, to those that have quite literally changed the shape of road bikes globally.
In this first episode he brings to life the Raleigh Competition Mk2 from 1976. Raleigh were the biggest cycling brand of the decade, and the Competition was a top-flight road bike that was still an achievable purchase for the enthusiast cyclist.

Sam Morris has been a professional mountain bike guide in the French Alps for over 20 years. In that time, guiding has gone from a summer escape for a lucky few to a fully professional role.
Sam has built one of the most respected guiding companies around (bikevillage.co.uk) and, having become involved in efforts to professionalise the industry, almost by accident became the President of the European Bike Guides organisation, who aim to have a pan-European top-level qualification for mountain bike guides.
In this podcast, Technical Editor Tom Marvin talks to Sam about the realities of being a mountain bike guide, the organisation, and how to become a guide yourself.

Whether you're pushing on the pedals or letting gravity do the work, wind resistance is one of the major factors keeping you from going at warp speed.
Road cycling is full of aero this, wind-cheating that, with millions of dollars spent developing (and marketing) the slipperiest of products.
But this is a conversation rarely had in mountain biking. But why?
Tom and Seb talk through where aero makes a difference, what can be done, and why it should matter to you.

Seb dives deep into how, why and where suspension tuning works with Jake Ireland of Sprung Suspension.
Suspension tuning can seems like a dark art. But what exactly can a tuning company do to improve your (already very sophisticated) mountain bike suspension? And if what they do is so good, why don't the shocks and forks they work on come with these modifications from the factory? Do Fox and RockShox not know what they're doing? Of course, there's a lot more to it than that.
We sit down with Jake from Sprung suspension, a local tuning workshop, who candidly dives into what they do and why.
Apologies for the background noise - we recorded this podcast in a busy workshop.

With COVID 19 Lockdown restrictions slowly easing across the United Kingdom, many of us have been lucky enough to get back out into the real world and enjoy the pleasures of socially distanced riding with friends, visiting different places and even taking part in the occasional race.
With that in mind, Simon, Tom and Felix sat down (virtually) to discuss what kind of riding they’ve been doing over the past few weeks. There’s talk of comfortable cruises out of the city for overnight escapes, trips to the mountains of France and about how, despite having all the kit, Simon just can’t seem to take a win at the local mid-week time trial series.

Hookless rims are fairly new in road cycling, but what are they, and where have they come from?
They’ve also proved fairly controversial, as without a fully recognised standard measurement for hookless, and in the wider sense, road tubeless, many rim and tyre manufacturers are stating only limited compatibility between brands. Simon, Matthew and Jack delve in to the subject in our latest podcast.

Shimano have just bought back their legendary SPD sandal in a 25th anniversary limited edition, and you’ll not be surprised to hear that Jack Luke was aghast with excitement at this news!
He bought in Simon and Matthew to discuss this rather divisive item of footwear, along with a chance to admit to some of their own, let’s just say, ‘interesting’ fashion choices of recent years.

John Cordoba is the project manager for road and gravel at Specialized. He’s the guy that sets the vision for their latest bikes, outlines the design and engineering goals and then works with the R&D team, engineers, and designers to make it all happen. John sat down with our Senior Road Technical Editor, Warren Rossiter, in our latest podcast.
Key to our discussion is the Roubaix, including bit of history of the bike – where its aimed at its racing success and what it took to make the 2020 Roubaix. Plus we discuss the Futureshock suspension on the Diverge, Sirrus, and e-bikes…

Bike launch season should be well under way, with brands showcasing their latest models to a select group of cycling media. While they may look like a bit of a jolly for the lucky few, there’s serious business going on behind the scenes.
With hundreds of launches between them, our technical editors Warren and Tom have seen it all – from the great to the terrible. Rob Spedding asks the questions you all want to know – how do bike launches work?

Everybody wants to go faster, but not everybody wants to drop a ton of cash doing it. So, what are the tricks of the trade that don’t cost the earth – or, anything at all?
Our Simon is dedicated to going faster, and while Jack isn’t so bothered, he certainly likes going further, so they’ve teamed together to give you the lowdown on the cheap or free tricks to get your bike rolling faster and further.

With prices ranging from a couple of hundred quid all the way to 5-figure sums, road bike prices are as diverse as the bikes themselves. But, how much should you really look to spend? Where do the cost versus performance lines intersect? Can you get a decent bike for a few hundred quid, and if you spend more, will it be vastly different?
Our team of road bike enthusiasts dissect the pricing structures, giving you a run-down of what to look for at varying price points.

In this podcast Technical Writer Seb Stott meets Chris Porter, the man behind Geometron Bikes and Mojo Rising suspension. He’s a man who’s been heavily involved in mountain bike and suspension design for decades, playing an influential part in the development of bike geometry, certainly in recent years.
With experience ranging from motor bike journalism to DH racing and management, as well as the development of his own bikes and suspension products, he’s a wealth of knowledge and ideas on the subject.
This is a long interview, so we’ve split it in to two parts, with the second coming shortly. This podcast does include some strong language.

With £2bn pledged for green transport in the UK following the COVID-19 outbreak in the UK, there’s great potential to get more bums on saddles when it comes to the daily commute. Cycling to work is healthy, cheap and often faster than driving through a city – it’s also preferable to sitting on crowded public transport!
Between our technical editors Tom and Alex, and Content Director Rob, we’ve amassed decades of commutes over many thousands of hours – from hour long rides each way to short spins through town. We therefore thought we’d share our top tips to help you make the most of your cycle commute. We cover the bike you have, or might want, kit to ride in, and a host of other bits and pieces.

The debate has raged for years in mountain biking, but with electric-assisted road bikes having a growing presence on the road, we debate whether they’re ‘cheating’ or just another way to get out on two wheels and enjoy the roads.
Our Senior Road Technical Editor Warren is a big fan, citing the ability to explore further, and getting those less able out on the roads, whereas Simon Bromley, BikeRadar’s Tech Writer is a little less convinced.

While it’s easy to get drawn into the assumption that you need to spend thousands on your next mountain bike, that’s not necessarily the case.
Tom and Seb go through the price ranges, and discuss what you can get, what to expect and the pros and cons of spending a little, or a lot, on your next mountain bike – with a few recommendations chucked in along the way.

We headed to our social channels and drummed up a dozen or so tech questions for our tech team. Warren, our Senior Road Technical Editor and Rob, our Senior Technical Editor in Chief sat (remotely!) with BikeRadar’s Technical Editor Tom to go through questions ranging from mountain bike drivetrain compatibility through to the use of road tubeless systems.
We will record more Q&A sessions in the future, so keep an eye on BikeRadar’s social channels for next time!

While not entirely new, the current COVID-19 situation has lead to mass cancellation of ‘real’ bike races, and much more prominence of cycling in the e-sport arena. Can it be a genuine replacement for the classic races we all love to watch, or is it merely a way to keep the pros’ legs spinning and a little bit of money flowing in to teams’ pockets.
Our trio of roadie-fan boys, Jack, Simon and Matthew have been tuning in, so perhaps you don’t have to.

Obree is one of the most unique cyclists in the world. Famous for his Hour Records on hand built bikes constructed with washing machine parts, and disrupting and aggravating the UCI’s rules and regulations, he’s a man who’s influence is far more wide-reaching than you might imagine.
Simon Bromley sat down with Graeme at the launch of Endura’s latest winter kit – this is an interview you do not want to miss. This podcast was recorded before the COVID-19 lockdown.

BikeRadar’s mountain bike tech team got together, thanks to the powers of online video chat, to discuss their favourite ever, and current favourite mountain bikes.
From bikes they raced, to bikes that changed the way they rode, Tom Marvin, Seb Stott and Rob Weaver look back at the bikes that made the biggest impact on their riding, and what gets pulled out of the garage now when there’s time for a spin in the woods.

After a full winter of wet and muddy testing, and then a week thrashing the top-contenders in Spain with BlackTown Trails, we’ve crowned our Trail Bike of the Year, and Enduro Bike of the Year.
With MBUK in the shops and BikeRadar rolling out the reviews online and on YouTube, we thought we’d bring together Rob Weaver, Tom Marvin and Luke Marshall, who put the entire test together, to discuss the process, the bikes and the eventual winners.

Between the team at BikeRadar, we reckon we’ve raced pretty much every mountain bike race format going. But, what’s the toughest type of mountain bike racing you can do?
MBUK’s Luke Marshall has raced at World Cup DH level, while Seb Stott has competed in a number of EWS events. They, along with Tom, who’s targeted the more niche end of racing, weigh in with their race-based experience.

Hope Technology is one of the most influential British bicycle componentry brands in the world. From their early days producing high-end hubs and disc brakes, Hope Tech’s UK-based factory still manufacturers their wide range of highly regarded components. They’ve now expanded into mountain bikes, with the HB.160 and HB.130, as well as their ground-breaking HB.T track bike, ready to ride in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics under Team GB.
Ian Weatherill co-founded Hope Technology after a spell manufacturing high-end parts for the aerospace industry, and sat down with Technical Editor Tom Marvin for this BikeRadar Meets Podcast.
