Kelsi and Trey explore the career of Barry Jenkins starting with a reaction to Mufasa: The Lion King. We then transition to the masterful career of Jenkins, whose groundbreaking work in Moonlight redefined modern queer cinema. From the intimate, poetic storytelling of Chiron’s life to Jenkins’ profound ability to capture the defense mechanism and prison of masculinity on screen.

Kelsi and Trey dive deep into Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey. This hypnotic, surreal adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ unfinished novel explores longing, loneliness, and identity through bold visual storytelling and complex characters. Set in a dreamlike 1950s Mexico City, the film blends stunning performances, immersive design, and a hallucinatory narrative to examine the tension between desire and self-destruction. Also, Drew Starkey is a babe.

Kelsi and Trey dive into Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, a sprawling, visually stunning epic that explores the intersection of art, legacy, and the immigrant experience. We unpack its breathtaking opening sequence, the haunting score by Daniel Blumberg, and its ambitious narrative following László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Holocaust survivor and architect navigating postwar America under the oppressive control of a manipulative patron (Guy Pearce). While we admire Corbet’s big filmmaking choices and meticulous design, we critique the film’s reliance on archetypes, tired tropes, blunt symbolism, and its reluctance to fully trust its audience. Is The Brutalist a modern cinematic masterpiece or a monument that struggles to stand out among giants?

Kelsi and Trey react to the Golden Globes awards show, the speeches, the production, and how outside of a few authetnic speeches (Demi Moore, Sebastian Stan, etc.) it really felt like more of a fun-awkward celebrity hangout. Then we discuss Luca Guadagnino's newest feature 'Queer' starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey (which may be Trey's favorite movie of the year). And, of course, today is a Patreon deep dive, so we'll be talking a lot about Guadagnino's and Timothée Chalamet's career with a light ranking conversation! Big Episode!

Kelsi and Trey dive into the coming of age world of Little Women, comparing Gillian Armstrong’s beloved 1994 adaptation with Greta Gerwig’s 2019 reimagining. We unpack how each version interprets Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, from Armstrong’s heartfelt, linear approach that leans into nostalgia and emotional honesty to Gerwig’s two-timeline structure, which reframes the story as a reflection on memory, ambition, and the relationship between commerce and art. We also explore the performances—Winona Ryder’s fiery Jo versus Saoirse Ronan’s restless, modern take—and debate Laurie’s evolution, Amy’s redemption arc, and how both films portray love, art, and community.

Kelsi and Trey dive deep into the recent rise of Timothée Chalamet, examining his recent work in 2024, including his transformative performance in A Complete Unknown. Chalamet completely immerses himself into his version of Bob Dylan, but the direction of James Mangold holds him back from ever fully capturing the political anger of this enigmatic artist. While we really enjoyed ourselves, we wanted something a bit more...radical! YouTube review on its way.

Kelsi and Trey dive deep into Robert Eggers' highly anticipated Nosferatu remake. While Eggers' signature atmospheric style is on full display, we explore whether the film’s haunting visuals and slow-burn tension are enough to overcome its often uninteresting narrative. We debate whether its a brilliant reimagining of a classic, or if the film leaves viewers wanting more absurdity and textual depth.

Kelsi and Trey dive into the chaotic world of Training Day, the 2001 crime thriller that earned Denzel Washington his only Best Actor Academy Award. They explore Washington's portrayal of Detective Alonzo Harris, a cartoonish villain elevated by Washington's charisma and command. We also explore Washington's career, highlighting his versatility across his very-different eras, examining how Training Day fits into his filmography. While Training Day is a propulsive movie, and Washington is undeniably compelling, we also touch on why this film has a complicated legacy for a variety of reasons.

VIDEO DROPS TOMORROW. Kelsi and Trey deep dive into The Substance, a maximalist allegory that satirizes the media's obsession with women's bodies. With Demi Moore delivering a brilliant meta-performance, the film navigates the dark undercurrents of media exploitation and the commodification of women. We unpack the movie’s subversive use of the male gaze, its critique of beauty standards, and the divisive discourse reminiscent to Scorsese's Wolf of Wall Street--both being films that indulge in the very spectacle they are critiquing.

Kelsi and Trey dive deep into the 1968 classic Rosemary’s Baby, a landmark in horror cinema and cultural commentary. We explore the film’s themes of gaslighting, autonomy, and betrayal, unpacking how it critiques societal control over women’s bodies. From Mia Farrow's haunting portrayal of Rosemary to the chilling dynamics of the Castevets and Guy's (John Cassavetes) devastating betrayal, we analyze how the film’s psychological horror transcends the genre to deliver a biting social critique. They also discuss the controversial legacy of Roman Polanski as a filmmaker and the enduring relevance of Rosemary’s Baby in today's conversations about autonomy, power, and oppression; specifically unpacking the interpretations of Rosemary's Baby as a feminist text, versus the actual intentions of the author and filmmakers.

Kelsi and Trey are joined by The Ringer's Sean Fennessey of The Big Picture podcast to dive into the career of Ridley Scott, one of cinema’s most prolific and visionary directors. With Gladiator II releasing wide this week, we revisit Scott’s genre-defining works—Alien, Blade Runner, Prometheus, among others—and explore his ability to transform blockbuster IP into ambitious epics. We discuss whether Scott belongs in the same tier as greats like Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, his reputation for “style over substance,” the impact of his controversial Alien prequels, and the modern filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve who’ve carried his influence forward.

Kelsi and Trey discuss Sean Baker’s Anora, a tonally ambitious American tragedy with a thinly written lead character study--a near-masterpiece thanks to Baker's direction and Mikey Madison's star performance. We unpack Baker’s raw, unflinching portrayal of life on the margins, his signature empathy, and how Anora compares to his earlier works like The Florida Project and Tangerine. They grapple with the film’s uneven narrative and pacing, discuss its authentic performances, and debate whether its character and tonal messiness is a reflection of its themes or its storytelling. Regardless, this is one of the best films of 2024!

Kelsi and Trey dive into Gladiator II with a non-spoiler review of Ridley Scott’s epic return to ancient Rome (00:00-11:44). They discuss how this ambitious sequel stacks up against the iconic original, specifically examining Scott's vision at 87 years old and how his signature style evolves with the film’s massive scale and complex characters. From Paul Mescal’s new take on the reluctant hero to Denzel Washington’s magnetic and morally intricate role, we’ll unpack the movie’s layered political themes, stunning set pieces—including an unforgettable naval Colosseum battle—and Scott's inventive twists on historical fiction (11:45-40:25).

Kelsi and Trey are joined by friend James Steck to dive into Ari Aster’s Hereditary, a chilling exploration of family trauma, grief, and conditioned traits that has redefined modern psychological horror. They break down the story of the Graham family, led by Toni Collette’s unforgettable performance as Annie, whose descent begins with the mysterious death of her secretive mother. As supernatural forces begin to encroach on her family, Hereditary reveals the terrifying impact of generational trauma and the loss of control over one’s own fate. We discuss the three kings of contemporary horror with Aster, Jordan Peele, and Robert Eggers, as well as Aster’s masterful direction, the film’s unsettling atmosphere, and its layered commentary on family, legacy, and mental illness.

Kelsi and Trey deep dive Get Out, Jordan Peele’s groundbreaking horror debut that redefined the genre with its social commentary and eerie atmosphere. They explore the film’s narrative of Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a young Black man navigating the hidden dangers within his white girlfriend’s family, uncovering a chilling secret that speaks to the insidious nature of neoliberal post-racial fantasies. With standout performances from Kaluuya, Allison Williams, and Lil Rel Howery, Get Out merges suspense with a darkly funny satire, creating a horror experience that is as thought-provoking as it is terrifying. We discuss Peele’s direction and how his unique approach has cemented Get Out as a cultural artifact, sparking conversations about representation, the horror genre, and Peele's timeless metaphor the "Sunken Place."

Trey speaks with Ethan Berger, the director of 'The Line,' to discuss his debut feature and the gritty, provocative exploration of fraternity culture that drives the film. Ethan talks about what inspired him to create a movie that serves as an antithesis to the more traditional, comedic depictions of fraternity life seen in popular culture. We dive deep into the lead character Tom (Alex Wolff), exploring the complexity of hypermasculinity and the toxic dynamics that fuel this exclusive culture. Ethan shares insights into the process of bringing these emotionally charged performances to life and explains how he balanced dark humor with the film's more intense, tragic elements. GAME OVER, MAN! Alien August continues with Kelsi and Trey's exploration of the iconic sequel to Ridley Scott's 'Alien.' We discuss the action spectacle of 'Aliens,' and Cameron's legacy as an escapist blockbuster filmmaker, as well as how he struggles to totally realize his commentaries of a marine-Vietnam satire, the motherhood ideas, and the power dynamics of Weyland-Yutani via Burke. Regardless of the movie's contradiction, the film's action set pieces make this Sigourney Weaver-led film a memorable one, especially when Ellen Ripley leads an iconic ensemble into battle next to legendary character actors like Bill Paxton.

Kelsi and Trey discuss the legacy of the 'Alien' franchise while exploring Fede Álvarez's disappointing 'Alien: Romulus.' Outside of a few notable set pieces, and the Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson performances, we're left surprised by this unoriginal, fan-service-heavy, mutation of Romulus' other Alien predecessors, such as Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant (which are much, much more conceptually interesting and deeply angry horror movies).

Kelsi and Trey discuss Jordan Peele and Lupita Nyong'o's puzzling horror masterpiece 'Us' for 3+ hours. This conversation takes many turns, but we mostly follow the throughline of Peele's work by exploring his filmography's ambitious thematic goal of revealing the "American Dream" as an American nightmare. In 'Us,' Peele smartly subverts genres with the all-American family comedy, the home invasion thriller, and the sci-fi slasher to settle the audience into his larger American duality allegory about the effects of economic disparities and the tribalism that follows. We also talk about the under-appreciated Lupita Nyong'o performance as both Adelaide and Red. Sign up for Patreon below!

Kelsi and Trey discuss Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as a successful adventure epic that thrills with its digital world-building and provokes with its subversive interrogations of the audience's relationship to Caesar. This is the 10th Apes installment and arguably one of the most ambitious of the 21st century; a compelling evolution conceptually and visually from its recent predecessors while also introducing audiences to a new set of characters with mysterious motivations–a true Apes movie that is in conversation with the radical 1968-73 films as Ball’s reinvention is unafraid to be a bit scathing in its commentary on fundamentalism and the white savior archetype.

Kelsi and Trey explore the career of Ryan Gosling through his newest semi-successful film The Fall Guy and then arguably his best performance in The Nice Guys. Gosling's career has taken many turns; from an indie darling in Half Nelson, to a stoic angry stunt driver in Drive, to the dreams of stardom in La La Land, and maybe no better than last year with his satirical depiction of Ken. Gosling has worn many hats of different men and his depiction of a fragile man lying to himself about being a nice guy is certainly never better than in Shane Black's dark comedy.

Kelsi and Trey finish off their anti-war series and begin their Emily Blunt discussion with the very thrilling and politically complicated Denis Villeneuve's Sicario. This is a technical masterclass on several fronts; with an imposing performance from Benicio Del Toro, stunning photography from Roger Deakins, and a brutal soundtrack from the late-great Jóhann Jóhannsson. However, while Sicario is a cinematic powerhouse, this episode explores the movie's challenge of paralleling a military state with drug cartels and how the film may have a difficult legacy because of underdeveloped subversions.

Kelsi and Trey explore the convincing cinematic power of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers. We also question the narrative’s internal logic with its character studies led by dynamic performances from Zendaya, Mike Faist, and (especially) Josh O’Connor. Then we discuss what makes Guadagnino’s films so compelling, from the bizarre technical motifs, the psychosexual tensions, the backdrop of historical significance, to the underdog qualities of his flawed characters. Most of his successful films blend cinematic thrills with alluring stories, and while Challengers is certainly thrilling (even hilarious in moments), we attempt to identify the unevenness of the film’s narrative that held us back from loving the movie.

We discuss one of the greatest cinematic representations of apocalyptic realism in Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men. This anti-war parable is covered in historical imagery and dystopian symbolism; a film subverting cautionary tale tropes with one of the most disturbing call-to-action movies ever made. Cuarón provokes contemporary conversations about late capitalism, refugee crisis’, the global rise of authoritarianism, the loss of spirituality, all to help inform and develop the world of Children of Men that scarily resembles our reality.

Kelsi and Trey react and deep dive Alex Garland’s Civil War. While a technical feat, Civil War is politically unchallenging and lacks a nuanced confrontation as an anti-war movie. Thankfully, Kirsten Dunst as a hollowed photojournalist on this road trip to D.C. with her dynamic co-stars Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, and Stephen McKinley Henderson keep you invested in an otherwise disappointing showing from one of our great science fiction filmmakers.

Kelsi and Trey discuss the divisive and widely misinterpreted Alex Garland's Men. This surrealist folk horror film uses conventions of the genre to explore the perpetual exploitation of women; depicting an absurd-level of imagery and symbolism specific to patriarchal mythology and the horror genre born out of it. Garland's Men, much like Jordan Peele's Get Out, self-examines its storytelling and provokes the audience to question how it historically accepts tropes and cliches that perpetuate and exploit stereotypes.

Kelsi and Trey explore the most emotionally compelling and gripping movie of 2023 in Anatomy of a Fall. The film is being interpreted as a courtroom thriller and a whodunit, but its subversive focus is on the societal pressures and expectations of women, mothers, monogamy—a brilliant interrogation of genre and constructs. Triet imposes imagination on the viewer, much like her lead character with autofiction; a twisty metacinematic commentary about pop-psychological thrillers that have used women as narrative tools. 4 hours of conversation on Patreon below!

Kelsi and Trey discuss Martin Scorsese's best picture winner The Departed; a pretty extreme movie about identity and best enjoyed as an anxiety-inducing bleak comedy. We explore how its both Scorsese's messiest and possibly most rewatchable project. A cat-and-mouse thriller that devolves into a thematically complicated movie about assimilation; when the cops and the criminals realize they are only nominally a family and are actually just competition to one another is when its theme of economic assimilation is most successful. Also, it's not a half bad movie when Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Jack Nicholson, and Alec Baldwin are searching for microprahcesssors!

Kelsi and Trey explore Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon as a semi-successful epic portrait of the systematic attacks on the Osage Nation and the racist robbery of their oil-induced wealth in 1920s Oklahoma. However, when the film turns into a misplaced internal battle of white guilt in courtrooms and jail cells between Earnest (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Hale (Robert De Niro) with mostly no Osage people in sight, the movie suffers.

Kelsi and Trey explore the creative vision of Christopher Nolan with a critical deep dive review of his newest film 'Oppenheimer'.

The filmmaker is obsessed with paradoxes and has become one in the public eye -- we investigate our conflicting feelings about Nolan's work and how those issues reveal themselves in his newest film 'Oppenheimer.'

Kelsi and Trey analyze the themes of one of the best films of 2022: All My Friends Hate Me. Then, Trey is joined by Tom Stourton for a conversation about his thrilling new film.
Conversation with Tom Stourton (01:06:13)
All My Friends Hate Me is a brilliant satirical dark-comedy and is the debut feature from director Andrew Gaynord and co-writers Tom Palmer and Tom Stourton (lead actor). The story begins with Pete (Stourton), a self-described leader of his friend group that steadily becomes more unhinged as he goes on a rural getaway trip to visit college friends for his 31st birthday.
The throughline of All My Friends Hate Me is paranoid delusions and how a lack of self-reflection can lead someone to self-destruct. The focused themes that bind the throughline are social gathering anxieties, protagonist complexes, class or privilege guilt, and most importantly, repressed emotions. All of these themes build on each other seamlessly and lead to a very relatable identity crisis for Pete.

Not a lot of Multiverse and Madness! Pretty good movie, but not a great Marvel movie.
Dr Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) casts a forbidden spell that opens a portal to the multiverse. However, a threat emerges that may be too big for his team to handle.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is a 2022 fantasy film directed by David Yates from a screenplay by J. K. Rowling and Steve Kloves. It is the sequel to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), the third installment in the Fantastic Beasts film series, and the eleventh overall in the Wizarding World franchise. Its ensemble cast includes Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Callum Turner, Jessica Williams, Katherine Waterston, and Mads Mikkelsen.
Set several years after the events of its predecessor, the film sees Albus Dumbledore tasking Newt Scamander and his allies with a mission that takes them into the heart of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald's army.

The Extra Credits podcast is hosted by two teachers searching for meaning in your favorite movies and shows.
'Ozark' season 4 part 1 follows Jason Bateman (Marty Byrde) as he tries to get out from under his debt to the drug cartel and Laura Linnie (Wendy Byrde) as she tries to create a legitimate economic and political empire. We argue the season 4 show runners misunderstood what audiences loved about their 'Ozark' characters by filling season 4 up with plot instead of personal stakes.

'Licorice Pizza' is sold as a slice of life story about an odd friendship set in San Fernando Valley, California. However, we argue that writer and director Paul Thomas Anderson is subverting the 'Coming of Age' story arc with this future Oscar nominee. We follow Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman as they embark on many adventures and find themselves in the same space with powerful people, such as Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, and Bennie Safdie.
