In this weeks episode of the podcast, we are talking about the age old question, "To be KING...or the KINGMAKER?" Disney Lorcana has one of the most unique multiplayer game experiences of any trading card game we've ever played! One of the things that we've noticed that has come up a LOT is the idea of players being in the position of being a kingmaker. Most of use HATE to be in that position...so, well, we thought we'd talk about it this weeks episode!

In this weeks episode, we are talking all about deckbuilding! Now, there's a LOT of things that go into deckbuilding and making a good deck, but in order to get there, there's a good deal of basics and fundamentals you should understand BEFORE you start making your deck. To that end, we thought we would take listeners and viewers through a hefty introduction to the entire deckbuilding process before we dive head first into more advanced subjects on the topic. So, buckle up, and we hope you enjoy the episode!

This week, we make the case for why you should not only play Multiplayer Disney Lorcana, but why you should actively care about its success. Even if you've never played a multiplayer game of Disney Lorcana before, you should definitely give it a try, and we'll list plenty of reasons why you should. But additionally, towards the end of the episode, we lay out the case for why you care about it! Hope you enjoy this weeks episode!

The title of this episode could just as easily be "This is the Song that Never Ends..." Anyone else remember that song from your childhood? No? Just me? K...😂🤣 There was some interesting discussions on Twitter this past week regarding toxicity in gaming communities, and as is usually the case, some folks brought up the saga of competitive players and casual players being able to co-exist in a game. So, we decided to bring up the topic once again and give our thoughts and takes. We've talked about this topic plenty on the podcast already (see episode #47), but wanted to hopefully bring some new discussion to the table. Let us know what you think! We hope you enjoy the discussion!

This episode may get a little bit...shall we say controversial??? We hope not. But today we talk about a topic that is typically a pretty heated and over zealous topic, especially in the world of TCGs. So today, like always, we invite you to sit back, try to relax...and maybe not blow a blood vessel. 😅

Another week, another conversation born from a debate/discussion between the two of us during the course of playing a card game 😂. This week, we discuss the "evolution" of a TCG in the game itself and design of the game over time. We discuss a little bit of power creep, gameplay fundamentals, and really whether or not Disney Lorcana is going to have equippable item cards in the future. We hope you enjoy the discussion!

This week, we finally talk about Sam Black's article "Resources and Game Design." We briefly mentioned the article in last weeks episode with Todd Anderson, but we wanted to devote an entire episode to the topic. We read through the article in it's entirety, as it is a fairly short article, and give you our opinions on Sam's takes. We hope you enjoy the episode, and be sure to let us know what you think by shooting us an email!

We've got another great episode for you this week! Today, we are talking with Magic: the Gathering veteran and recent Disney Lorcana convert Todd Anderson! Todd has a long history in the MTG community, and has recently started a podcast and YouTube channel focused entirely around Disney Lorcana. We were able to meet Todd and GenCon this year and learned that has recently gotten interested in Lorcana, and immediately knew we had to get him on episode of the podcast. We hope you enjoy the episode as we talk A LOT about Lorcana, get his thoughts and opinions on the game, and just have a good time!

We are continuing last weeks theme of recapping GenCon 2023, and this weeks episode we are talking all about Star Wars Unlimited! We had an amazing time finally playing and demoing Star Wars Unlimited at GenCon this year and we're gonna tell you all about it. We were able to demo the game with one of the designers Aaron Haltom, and we're able to talk with him shortly afterward and had a great discussion. Join us this week as we talk more about what we saw from FFG and Star Wars Unlimited at GenCon 2023!
Oh yeah, we also may have a special surprise in store for this weeks Card of the Week segment...stay tuned!

We are back from GenCon, and finally back to podcasting! Sorry for the few week hiatus...but GenCon really took a lot out of us! It's great to get back to the grind and back to creating content however. This weeks episode we are talking all about Disney Lorcana at GenCon, and we are joined in studio with a guest! We are joined by Teddy from the Glimmer Gang! The Glimmer Gang is a competitive Disney Lorcana podcast focused on the competitive side of Lorcana. Now that Lorcana is out, Teddy and the rest of the gang are really excited to dive deep into the competitive aspect of Disney Lorcana. Dan, Jim and Teddy go over the wonderfulness (is that even a word?!?), the craziness, and the fiasco that is Disney Lorcana at GenCon 2023. Sit back and enjoy this weeks episode!

Kind of surprised we haven't devoted a podcast episode to this topic yet, to be quite honest. In todays episode, we talk all about the "Legendary Rule." This term was coined by Magic: the Gathering, but this same principle pops up in plenty of other trading card games. Some games call these type of cards "Legendary" some other games call these types of cards "Unique." We talk about the rule, and really how it applies to the design of a card game, and why we think it's interesting. This topic really got started because of a live stream from FFG a few weeks back when they were talking about the design of Star Wars Unlimited. Strap in, and hold on as we talk all about this really cool topic!

Welcome back to Episode #101 of the podcast! Today, we are again talking about a fairly relevant topic in the TCG space, especially right now. We're talking all about MSRP and market pricing in trading card games. Back in episode #68, we talked all about the secondary market in card games, and gave our reasons why it is a good thing to have. However, with the current, for lack of better word, 'debacle' that is the first print run of Disney Lorcana, we felt this was a perfect time to revisit the topic, and this time really hone in on what MSRP is as well as market pricing. We hope you enjoy the discussion, and don't hesitate to let us know what you think!

We are at episode #100!! We can't believe we've made it this far, and we couldn't have done it without all you listeners, so thank you so much! Today, we are doing a deep dive into Star Wars Unlimited. When we last talked about this new TCG, we didn't really know much about it. All we knew was this it was a Fantasy Flight Games title, and they were doing a Star Wars card game. Now, we have a lot more information on the game, including Quick Start Rules, and a lot of cards to look at. So with that, we take a close hard look at the game...and we're now super excited about it. Join us!

We had the pleasure of hanging out with him and some others at a local Flesh & Blood event recently, and we had an absolute blast. If you've been in the realm of trading card games for any length of time, you have a familiarity with the term "Spoiler Season!" Spoiler season is like Christmas for many TCG consumers and players. For some, spoiler season is the worst time of the year...In any regard, today we wanted to talk at length about what we think of spoiler season and how it relates to the games we play and hobby we love. We've been through many a spoiler season, and we have some thoughts on what we think works, and what we don't think works. We have some thoughts on things we like, and things we don't. Come along and enjoy the spoiler season conversation!

We've got another doozy of an episode for you all today. On todays episode, we're talking all about some current events. By now, you may be familiar with the most recent Quackalope controversy that's happened over the course of the past week or so. If you haven't, the TLDR is; a relatively large YT channel did some videos, asked for "compensation," and it didn't go down very well at all. Super precise I know, but if you listen to the episode, we do our best to hash it out and give our opinions and takes on the matter. Check the links down below for more context and information as well.
Lastly, just want to remind you all, these are all just our hot takes and opinions. We wish no ill will towards Jesse and his team, and sincerely wish the best for him and his team. We wish the situation was handled a little better, but at the end of the day, we're all human and all make mistakes. Please continue to show grace to all involved, and we will continue to try and do the same as well.

Got another good topic to discuss this week, and it's kind of a continuation of last weeks episode. In case you missed it, last week we talked a lot about the upcoming Star Wars TCG, Star Wars Unlimited. We're optimistic, but pretty hesitant, as it's coming from FFG, who doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to Star Wars card games. In that conversation, we touched on companies, their goals, profits etc. One of the things we touched on was winning in the short term and winning in the long term. This came to mind again when watching a recent YouTube video from Linus Sebastion of Linus Tech Tips. He recently released a video saying he was stepping down from the CEO position at LTT, and was a really great video. I encourage you all to go check it out. So watching that video made us revisit this topic, so we hope you enjoy!

If you've been in the TCG/CCG for any length of time, you most likely have a pretty good understanding of how secondary markets work within the space. The episode seeks to dive deep into the topic, and we explore the purposes behind secondary markets, and really why they exists particularly within the card game space. We hope you enjoy!

We cannot seem to stop talking about Disney Lorcana! In today's episdode, we again had Lorcana on our minds as we went through...a thought experiment. We talk about color theory within the context of Magic: the Gathering, and talk about what each color stands for and represents in the Magic universe. Then we start talking about Lorcana and Disney characters. Since we have all of this information about what the colors represent in Magic, what if we placed Disney characters in that universe? What colors and/or color combinations would they be? We discuss...

The major goal of this episode is to try and familiarize our audience with the many great and fantastic different card games that are on the market. We realize that not all card games are for all card game players, or even tabletop players. Since we are really always in search of the best card game for us, we thought we'd introduce you all to many of them out there. So sit back, and hopefully we will introduce you to your next favorite card game!

Today...we talk all about one of our most favorite formats in one of our most favorite games. Today's episode is all about the Commander format in Magic: the Gathering. We've talked pretty extensively in the past about Magic, but we have yet to dedicate an entire episode to the commander format. So today we do just that. We talk about why we love the format so much, and why we think it's one of the biggest formats in the largest card game. Join us as we talk about this exciting format, and stay tuned for the next few weeks, as the following couple episodes will be deck techs talking about some of our favorite commander decks! We hope you enjoy!

Today's episode is an intriguing one! We are talking about...the negatives...of being positive? It almost sounds like an oxymoron. How is it negative, when I'm trying to have a positive outlook and attitude? We'll admit...on it's face, it's doesn't sound like it makes much sense. But if you trust us, it'll make more sense when you hear our reasoning behind the topic. We hope you enjoy!

We have got a pretty interesting episode for you all today! We are talking all about resource systems in card games! We think this is a pretty fascinating topic, especially the longer and longer we are in the card game space. It seems that whenever we play a new card game, we find a slightly new variation on an old "theme." Especially when it comes to the resources utilized for the gameplay. So, that's kind of what we wanted to talk about in this episode, is all about the resource systems found in card games of today. We hope you enjoy!

In this weeks episode, we talk about a topic that quite honestly...we're surprised we really have yet to touch on. That topic is evergreen games! If you've been around tabeltop gaming for any length of time, you've more than likely heard people talk about the phrase, "Evergreen game." If you've ever thought to yourself, what are they talking about?..then stick around. We do our best to dive into the topic and give our thoughts into what those types of games are, and what we'd classify as some evergreen titles. We hope you enjoy the episode!

Welcome back after an extended break! We hope you all had an enjoyable July 4th holiday, especially if you're in the states! In any event, we are back with another great episode for you. This topic came up in a pretty interesting way (a way in which we talk about in the episode 😁), and when we started talking about the topic, we immediately stopped talking about it and said, "This will make a great podcast topic!" So here we are! We're talking all about rules sets and formats for card games, and even board games today. The conversation really started as a way to figure out how to run a good tournament for different games, instead of the (Magic typical) bring 1 deck plus a sideboard. So we went from there. We hope you enjoy the episode, and we're really interested to know your opinions!

Have you ever been playing a game and thought to yourself...when will this game just be over all ready?? I think a lot of us have been in that exact situation. It's with that thought in mind, that we talk about todays episode, "What Makes a Game(s) Exhausting." Dan and Jim go over a few thoughts and ideas that each of them have of why they think a game can be exhausting in general, and some ideas for them specifically. We hope you enjoy the episode!

We've got a great episode today discussing a topic that we've wanted to touch on for quite a long time, and one that's really important to us as well. We're talking about finding your playgroup today! This is probably one of the biggest things that tabletop gamers have the most hardest thing actually doing, moreso from our experience due to the majority of us being introverts 😉. Well today we wanted to go through not only our experiences with finding some playgroups, but also giving tips on how to find yours! We hope you enjoy!
Really interesting episode for you all today! In this episode, we discuss one of our recent gameplay videos in which Jim basically just dominated Dan in a game of Here to Slay...and Jim was really the only player having much fun. If you saw the video, you know which one I'm talking about! 😂😂 While we really did have a good time, we started to have a pretty good discussion on how each of us have fun, and our different types of playstyles, so we wanted to dive deeper in that discussion on this episode. Strap in, and get ready for a great discussion!
Today we sit down and have a chat with Daniel Miller, the designer of the card and dice game Spirit Duels! Spirit Duels is a fast-paced card game of dice-driven combat. Lead a team of magical creatures known as Spirits into battle against your opponent! Command and evolve your Spirits to gain the advantage in combat and defeat your rivals! We are super excited to be checking out this game and have been having a blast with it. If you haven't yet, go check out the preview and "How to Play" video we did on it over on our YouTube channel, we'll be sure to post it down below. We're excited to be able to chat with Daniel and get to know him a little bit, and talk to him about his experiences in the industry, and learn more about this awesome game! We can't wait to have you check out the interview!
In today's episode of the podcast, we wanted to talk about a topic we really haven't touched on yet, and that is tournament preparations! We have a few tournaments coming up for us in our local area, so we are currently starting to prepare for them, so we thought we'd start talking about the process! If you've never prepared for a tournament before, we're go through our process, as well as some tips that we think everyone should look at and consider when they prepare for tournaments themselves. Hope you enjoy!
We've got a really great episode for you all today! On this episode of the podcast, we dive into the heavily debated topic, the difference between casual gaming and competitive gaming. After bringing up this topic somewhat off handedly in Episode #45, we really started to ask more and more questions, and really dive into the topic more. Eventually, we really started to ask, can a game exist itself and just be either a casual game or a competitive game? Through talking about it, we realized that this was really a very nuanced topic, and wanted to give it the attention we thought it deserved. Hope you enjoy!
Today's topic is a doozy! If you've been into card gaming for any length of time, you most likely heard of the term netdecking. In fact, we started talking a little bit about this topic in Episode #42 when we were talking about Marvel Champions and why we enjoyed that game. We did say that we would dive deeper into the topic of netdecking, and here is that episode. If you've heard of the term netdecking, you may be familiar with its negative connotation in the world of card gaming, and we think that it is garbage 😂. In this episode we go over what netdecking is, and why we think it is a good practice to do in card gaming. We hope you enjoy the conversation!
Today's topic is one that we started in last weeks episode with Sam Smith where we began talking about the idea that not all games were made with me in mind. Last week the topic was brought up in speaking about Disney Villainous and how it was very much designed with the casual and family audience in mind, not the overly strategic thinking audience. Being the very strategic players that we are, we can tend to take the games that we play and play, analyze and try and enjoy them through that strategic mindset. We flesh out that idea and concept in this episode. We hope you enjoy!
We're really excited to bring you today's episode! Today we sit down for a conversation with Sam Smith, also known as the Lord of the Board! Sam runs the YouTube channel Lord of the Board, and spends a lot of time creating strategy content specifically centered around Root, Villainous, and a few of his other favorite games. We chat about YouTube, tabletop communities...and of course Root and Villainous 😂 We hope you enjoy the conversation! Don't forget to follow Sam on social media! If you haven't been in the tabletop gaming hobby or space for very long, the idea of playing board games or card games solo may seem a bit foreign to you. Today, solo board gaming is an extremely popular niche within the hobby space, and for good reason! This weeks topic is essentially part 2 from last weeks episode, where we talked about should tabletop games be digital. Today's topic is a relatively simple and straightforward question. Should all tabletop games be digital? Basically asking the question should there be a digital version of every tabletop game? As we continue to progress technologically as a society, the way we experience "games" is going to be constantly evolving. There's a lot of different ways to think about this topic, and we discuss. Hope you enjoy!

This is a topic we've been thinking about for a bit, and it wanted to bring it to you all, our amazing audience. As tabletop gamers, we often find ourselves typically gravitating towards strategic card games. We've never really thought too much about it, but the question has come up before, why do we enjoy these card games so much? We've talked at length about that specific topic before (see episode 20). But we've never really dove into this topic before. On the surface, it seems like a simple answer...a card game is a game where cards are involved 😅. However, in todays market, with so many different types of games out there, it is so much more involved than there just being cards in a game to be considered "a card game." Hope you enjoy our discussion.

Today we talk all about digital card games, and some of our favorites that we've played. Monday, Cryptozoic Entertainment announced a new digital card game coming to the market in 2022 called DC Dual Force. That announcement sparked the idea of talking about this topic, and we haven't really dove into the topic before this. We've merely scratched the surface. Today we're really digging into it. Additionally, there's a lot of things happening behind the scenes here at hobbies + happiness we want you to aware of, so we talk about that too! Hope you enjoy!

Today we talk about a topic that we've touched on somewhat in the past, and that is the relationship of skill and RNG when it comes to tabletop and card games. RNG stands for random number generator, or random number game. Card games are really where this discussion has the most impact, as card games typically have more to do with randomness than other types of games. Especially when games get more competitive, does this topic come up, as higher skilled players eliminate as much randomness as possible from the game they are playing. But what about when the game consists almost entirely of randomness? We discuss the topic in this episode.

In today's episode, Dan and Jim start an interesting conversation regarding intellectual property (IP) in the tabletop space. Just about each and every game it seems like, is built or based on some sort of IP. We go back through our own history, and try to think back on some games that we were interested in, and why we were interested in them. Ultimately, it seems that today's consumer base, really bases a lot of their purchasing decisions on whether a game is ultimately a good game or not. It seems as though that did not always seem to be the case. Stay tuned as we discuss.

Today's episode is all about how crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter have completely changed the board game industry. Crowdfunding is a fantastic way for businesses and individuals to raise money for individual or business needs, like getting a new project off the ground and funded. Back in the day, only big companies had the money and resources to create board game products, but crowdfunding completely changed the way these types of projects were completed. Thankfully, now with the sites like Kickstarter, so many more and new products and projects are being able to get made and into the market. Today, Dan and Jim talk about how the industry has changed, and the positive and negative effects because of it.

After last week's episode, Jim and I (Dan) were playing a game called Unfair (it's awesome and you should check it out, link below). During the end of the course of the game, we started an interesting conversation, and it was one that I thought would make an great podcast topic. We got into talking about how we both have fun and find joy in different aspects of card games. That began the conversation, and this episode is the natural "conclusion" to it...or is it?

Deck building games are right up our alley, as we love just about any card game. We tell you about our experiences with the genre as a whole, including some recent experiences, and tell you why we enjoy these types of games so much. Last week on the podcast, Dan & Jim talked about how we as societies have migrated a lot of our activities to online and the internet, and specifically referenced playing tabletop games online. Many times, the unfortunate outgrowth of the internet, can be the very real experience of negativity, or "toxicity". This weeks episode is all about toxicity, and how it is manifested in gaming communities. We talk about the why, but most importantly, we try to discuss how we can help to be a part of the solution, rather than the problem. We hope you enjoy this weeks episode.

On todays episode, we talk about the very relevant topic of comparing and contrasting the experiences of playing tabletop games online and playing them in-person. 2020 was a heck of year...and not in a good way. What the year did do, however, was really shine a light on what things I think many of us take for granted, and for many people, meeting each other in person is one of them. Human beings need social interaction on a regular basis, and I think 2020 really showed a lot of people that. So that is really where the genesis of today's topic came from, but this conversation did not originate because of 2020. The tabletop industry in particular is no stranger to online meetings. We really get into this topic in today's episode.

In this weeks episode, we talk about very important topic relevant to the tabletop hobby and industry, your Local Game Store (LGS). Local Game Stores are the life blood of your local tabletop community, or at least they should be. There is a lot that we could discuss on this topic that relates to local game stores and how they relate to their communities and customers, but we think this is a great place to start the conversation. We are leading this big topic off, with why you as a player should support your LGS. This weeks episode, we talk about arguably one of the most important aspects in all of the tabletop gaming hobby, storytelling. Good stories keep us, the audience, the player, engaged. Good stories keep us coming back for more. When we are in the midst of a good story, we want to keep playing just to see what is going to happen in the story. I think we all know how it feels to be playing a game, or taking part in some form of entertainment, and when we finish the session, we immediately want to jump back in and keep going. On the flipside, I think we all know how it feels to take part in a game where the story is subpar. That's why we wanted to take this episode and devote it entirely to the topic of storytelling, and how it is weaved into the many different games and genres of some of our favorites.

On this weeks episode, we discuss what some of our favorite tabletop games are. We also start to delve a bit into our thought processes when it comes to what games we choose to play and why we play them. For those of you who think that all we will talk about are trading and collectible card games, don't fret! We did NOT add any of those games to the lists! While we may discuss card games, that is games which utilize cards as an in game mechanic, we steer clear of games such as Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon (although we all know that's all Jim would talk about if he could). We enjoy you enjoy this weeks episode, and hope that maybe we give you some ideas for games to play for your next family game night!

Today on the podcast, Dan and Jim discuss how difficult it can be to get into trading card games (TCGs) and collectible card games (CCGs). TCGs and CCGs have been around for an extremely long time and have become extremely popular among the tabletop gaming community. If there is an intellectual property, chances are there is a TCG or CCG based around that IP. The guys really enjoy these kinds of games themselves and always enjoy playing matches of their favorite card games. Getting into these games can seem like a daunting task, however. In this episode, they discuss some of the barriers to entry that exist in getting into these games, and ultimately, why they think it is worth it to jump in and over those hurdles, and to not them scare you off.
