With Caesar’s conquest of Gaul complete, focus now turns to his much anticipated return to Rome. Caesar envisions the triumphant return of a conquering hero. The Optimates envision a criminal being dragged before a court controlled and guarded by the armed soldiers of Pompey. With both sides claiming to want peace yet refusing to back down, an ancient arms race begins.

But with a massive Gallic relief army bearing down upon them, Caesar and his army find themselves surrounded. Fighting now on two fronts and heavily outnumbered, the Romans will be pushed to their breaking point.

Julius Caesar races back and forth across Gaul doing his best to stamp out the embers of rebellion that seem to be springing up everywhere he looks. The Treveri, the Nervii, the Menapii, the Aduatuci, the Senones, and the Carnutes, all these tribes and more are mobilizing for war. Even Germania gets in on the fray and soon Caesar is building a second bridge over the Rhine to teach the Germans yet another lesson.

Julius Caesar suffers a crushing series of blows upon his return from Britain as he receives word that multiple members of his direct family have died. Back in Rome the funeral is anything but normal. Crassus is becoming insufferable at the excitement of his Syrian command and Cato may or may not have engaged in wife-trafficking.
Note #1: While the translation of Plutarch I have says the Roman crowd seized Julia’s “corpse”, it’s possible she had already been cremated by that point in which case they would have been seizing her funeral urn.
Correction/Note #2: Cato did have children by another woman, Atilia. Atilia was Cato's wife before he married Marcia and the children he had by Atilia were adults by the time of the Civil War (his daughter by Atila, Porcia, was already married to Bibulus). Therefore, I still believe the daughters Cato needed looking after when he fled Rome were the daughters of Marcia since these daughters would have been younger and therefore would need a mother to look after them.

Julius Caesar and his legions march to the River Thames where they are confronted by an army of Britons. The deeper they march into Britain the more they seem to suffer casualties in ambushes and hit and run raids. With Autumn quickly approaching, Caesar needs to find a way to bring this campaign to an end before the weather turns and he is stranded in Britain for the winter.
Always looking to generate interest in Rome, Julius Caesar also provides us with an ethnography of the ancient Britons.

Summary: Julius Caesar takes the fight to Germania. To do so he will need to demonstrate Rome's incredible engineering abilities. Crossing one frontier isn’t enough for Caesar though and he soon has designs on a second even more outlandish exploit that same year.
Correction #1: I got a little carried away talking about horses in this episode. I say that horses had been the primary method of quick transportation for thousands and tens of thousands of years. In reality the earliest known domestication of horses was roughly 6,000 years ago in the steppelands north of the Black Sea from Ukraine to Kazakhstan according to Brittanica. Meaning that yes, domesticated horses had been around for thousands of years, but not tens of thousands of years. Like I said, I got carried away. It’s another question altogether as to when domesticated horses reached the Rhine. I could not easily find the answer to that question and seeing as this podcast is on Julius Caesar and not horses I hope you’ll forgive me for leaving it unanswered.
Correction #2: In this episode I say that most of the Gallic traders sailed to western Britain. It would be more accurate to say most Gallic traders sailed to a part of Britain West of where Caesar wanted to land. According to historian Adrian Goldsworthy one of the Gallic traders’ most important ports was at Hengistbury Head.

Julius Caesar has some spare time before the campaign season is over so he decides to try to mop up some pesky smaller tribes still holding out against the might of Rome. These concerns are soon forgotten when a large Germanic host crosses the Rhine and tries to make their new home in Gaul. Caesar tries to deal with them with a combination of diplomacy and threatening action but it ends in a debacle that will be hotly debated in the Roman Senate. Julius Caesar’s greatest Roman foe, Cato, will even suggest that Caesar should be handed over to the Germanic tribes for punishment.
Correction: I mention in this episode that there are accounts of World War 2 soldiers being bogged down in horrible mud not far from where Caesar was fighting the Menapii and Morini. This was a slip of the tongue and I meant World War 1 soldiers.

Crassus and Pompey take the consulship by violent storm, backed by Julius Caesar. Their triumvirate wishlist from Lucca will take even more violence to get approved but Crassus and Pompey seem happy to use naked force where bribery and covert coercion fail. We also take a quick look at Caesar’s key legates in Gaul and the civilians that act as his proxies in Rome while he is in Gaul waging war.

Julius Caesar may have defeated the fiercest of the Belgic tribes but there are still tribes that continue to resist. Using siege warfare the Belgae have not dreamed of, Caesar sets out to teach them that resistance to Rome is futile. Upon completion of the campaign Caesar declares the whole of Gaul as being pacified.
Back at home, Rome goes absolutely wild. In this episode we also delve into why the Gauls posed such an existential threat in the minds of ordinary Romans and what it meant to them to see Caesar defeating the Gauls/Belgae in battle.

A massive migration of "barbarians" is headed directly for one of Julius Caesar’s provinces. This is Caesar’s first test as Proconsul. The tribes say they want to pass through Transalpine Gaul but promise not to misbehave. Caesar is having none of it. What’s more, he has spotted an opportunity for glory.
Note: Further Gaul and Transalpine Gaul are two names for the same province. In this episode I use the terms interchangeably.
Correction: I discuss the practice of forcing your enemies to “pass under the yoke” in this episode. I stated the yoke would be a triangle made of spears that defeated soldiers would be forced to march under. This was a mistake as the yoke would really be two spears stuck into the ground with a third spear running perpendicular and connecting them at the top. This would form a rectangle for the soldiers to walk under, not a triangle.

Julius Caesar continues his blitzkrieg of legislation as Consul. His enemies can barely keep pace. The Triumvirate reigns supreme… or so it seems. The ground they stand on is not so sure as they think. In the background, the Optimates are priming a clever trap for Caesar.

Julius Caesar refuses to allow an obstructive Senate led by Cato to stonewall his legislation. Ignoring the Senate altogether, Caesar takes his bills directly to the people. At the first and most important of these votes chaos breaks out in the forum and fists (and much smellier substances) start to fly.

Julius Caesar wins the Consulship in a landslide. Despite this, he is put in a political corner by Cato and the Optimates’ maneuverings ahead of his year in office. Caesar will need to use all of his charm, charisma and political acumen to find a creative solution around that immovable object that is Cato. Necessity is the mother of invention and soon one of history’s most famous alliances is born. Caesar then starts off his consulship with a bang, unleashing a flurry of major legislation to the Optimates' displeasure.

Pompey Magnus has been away from Rome for 5 years waging war and reorganizing the Eastern half of the Roman empire. He returns to Rome as perhaps the richest and most accomplished Roman General of all time up to that point in history. Despite this, in Rome he finds nothing but jealous and obstructive aristocrats looking to knock him off his high horse. Seeing the opportunity of a lifetime, Julius Caesar races back to Rome to hold his triumph and run for Consul.

Julius Caesar’s Praetorship ends with a scandalous bang. Cross-dressing combines with sacrilege to create a scandal the likes of which Rome has never seen. We introduce you to a new individual whose appetite for personal vendettas is unparalleled in history. While Julius Caesar attempts to extricate himself from the controversy without destroying his political career, his creditors grow impatient.
Enter the stage, Publius Claudius Pulcher.
Correction: While the Claudii go back to some of the earliest days of the Roman Republic (specifically, 6 years after the founding of the Republic), they were in fact originally a Sabine family. The Sabines were at war with the Romans and the Claudii defected and joined Rome. Therefore I believe it would be inaccurate to call them a “Founding Family of Rome” as I say in this episode. Additionally, The Julii (Julius Caesar’s family) are believed to date back to the time of the Roman Kings and therefore would have been an older family in Rome than the Claudii.

Cato causes a ruckus as Quaestor, reopening old wounds from the days of the Dictator Sulla. In a bizarre trial, Julius Caesar uses an archaic law dating back to the Kings of Rome to prove a political point.
Notes: The other religious college I mentioned is the Augurs.
Correction: At one point I say Julius Caesar’s speeches as the prosecution do not survive in the Gaius Rabirius case. While it is correct that his speeches did not survive, he was not the prosecution, he was the judge (albeit not a very neutral one).

Pompey aims to gain an unprecedented command to wage war on the Mediterranean’s pirates. Julius Caesar works to get in the General’s good graces.
Correction #1: In this episode I say Julius Caesar visits Transalpine Gaul after his Quaestorship. In fact, he visited Transpadane Gaul which is in the area of the Po Valley within the province of Cisalpine Gaul (Northern Italy). Transalpine Gaul did not have Latin Rights.
Correction #2: In this episode I say Lucullus raised catfish. While I can't find any source that specifically states the type of fish he raised, it is likely he was raising bearded or barbed mullets.
Note: Lucullus does eventually receive his triumph but it takes a few years and a lot of political wrangling from the leading men of the senate to make it happen.
Correction #3: Pompey has been referred to as adulescentulus carnifex. My apologies for botching this pronunciation.
Correction: Mithridates was the father-in-law of Tigranes, not brother-in-law.

Note: Suetonius tells us Caesar drank very little wine and that even his enemies admitted that.
