This month we join James in East London in search of some of his favorite New York food: bagels. I know this isn’t a food blog, but a good New York-style bagel has pretty much been impossible to find in London… that is, until we tried Paulie’s Bagels. So I thought I had to share here.
When I had this generously filled bacon, egg, and cheese bagel in my hand, it was like I was back in Brooklyn. If you are looking for a little taste of NYC, I highly recommend looking this place up.
(I’m not sponsored by these guys, by the way. Just love a good New York Bagel).
Alright, back to the music. This month we have two hours of what can only be called a bit of escapism. It’s two hours of jazz, indie electronic, funk and tropical psychedelic to fill your soul. It features new music from The Ironsides, Sven Wunder, Pearl & the Oysters, Mulatu Astatke, Doctor Bionic, Goose Down, Lars Fiil, Sweatson & Klank, The Groovy Nobody, and many many more.

As is tradition, we’re dropping the Jan mixtape a bit early this year. We’ve rounded up all of our favorite dance music that was submitted to the blog in 2024 and putting it on this tidy little mixtape for you. We release it early if you wanted to supplement your New Years Eve dance party with a few more tracks.
Thank you all for being amazing fans of the blog for another year running. We look forward to discovering and supporting new music with you in the new year.

It’s that time again. It’s that festive time of year! Which mean that it’s time for The New LoFi bonus Christmas mixtape!
This year we’re going to the movies! The 2024 holiday mixtape is all about Christmas movie soundtracks. From Home Alone to Elf; Miracle On 34th Street to The Grinch; It’s A Wonderful Life to The Polar Express — there’s a soundtrack sample to all the most loved classic Christmas movies in this mixtape.
So get yourself a cup of Christmasy hot chocolate, snuggle up on the sofa in the living room, and pop this “Christmas at the Movies Mixtape” on your stereo. Maybe play a fun game of “can you guess which movie” while you’re listening, or just enjoy the holiday movie soundtrack cheer. Either way, we hope you this mixtape gets you into the Christmas spirit.
If Christmas movie soundtracks aren’t your vibe during Christmas, you should check out some of our Christmas Mixtapes from previous years: The 80’s Christmas Mixtape, A LoFi Christmas, A Whiskey Soaked Indie Rock Christmas Mixtape, A Classical Christmas Mixtape, The Christmas Mixtape 2000! or our most popular mixtape: The Big Band Christmas Mixtape.
And if Spotify is your music platform of choice, we’ve put all the Christmas Mixtapes on our Spotify channel for you to shuffle up the Christmas spirit there.
This month we’re featuring new music from Barry Can’t Swim, Sholto, The Offline, Lewis OfMan, KIDSØ, The Sorcerers, Theatre of Delays, 3030, Phree Direxion, TVLI, Arky Waters, Skallee & Wagz, A/S/L, and many more.
As you can probably tell from that list of artist, this month we’ve got a full range of genres represented — from indie, funk, soul to house, disco and ambient electronic.
Shout out to some of the new musicians being featured on the blog for the first time including (the new grammy-nominated musician and producer Tali (aka TVLI). We’ve featured his new track “Tempest” on the mix, which sees him returning to his piano roots on this fantastic ambient electronic overture.
We also want to welcome Tim Laws and DJ Toney White (aka Skallee & Wagz) onto this mixtape, with their infection disco house sound. The British dance music duo stormed onto the scene with their hit single “Office Chick” in 2017 and have been spreading the good vibes across the dancefloor ever since. We’ve featured their brand new single, “What You Try’na Do” on the mix this month for a little bit of a disco dance punch in the face (in a good way).
We’ve also got a few fantastic Afro-house tracks on the mix this month from producers like Imbuwa, 3030 and African music collective: Bantwanas. The 3030 track we feature is a Curol remix that mixes African and Brazilian sounds into the beat. Curol is one of the most prominent voices in Brazilian Afro-house and is known for her authentic sound that combines Brazilian percussion with powerful grooves. There is also a track entitled “Johera” (by an Australian producer called Arky Waters) that crafts in that tropical Afro-beat sound. “Johera” blends breakbeat electronica with swelling techno influences.

We’ve gone full psychedelic exotica on this month’s mix ranging from the far-out soul jazz to the crunchier side of indie. I hope you enjoy the following two hours of new music from all around the world.
But before we get into the mix, here are a couple of music videos that feature from the tape:

April 2024 Mixtape Playlist
This month we are carrying on with the eclectic music from all over the world with a mix of psychedelic French indie, Turkish funk, and American desert rock. It’s sort of an evolution of last month’s mix of tropical exotica and jazz. But this mix has a low key swagger all the way through.
Look out for new music from Headache, Dina Ögon, Monster Rally, Hether, Vanishing Twin, Helado Negro, and many more.
But before we get into the mix, you should chekc out the new album from The Breathing Effect called Eli & Harry — we’ve featured one of the singles from that album on this month’s mix… it’s called “Shake It Up” and it’s around 11 mins into the mix. And also, have a look at this trippy new Helado Negro video for their single “I Just Want To Wake Up With You”

This month, we’ve got an eclectic mix of music that starts somewhere in the tropical exotica space and ends up in something a bit more electronic. May 2023 Mixtape Playlist
Thanks for tuning into the April edition of The New LoFi mixtape. I had a lot of fun exploring the tropical exotica side of jazz and funk last week. This week is a bit of a continuation on that idea by taking a dive into funk and psychedelica that has been released in the last year from the Arabic world. It’s all about the Turkish funk and soul this month. Turkish psychedelic funk from producers like Janko Nilovic, Charif Megarbane, DJ Istanbul or a band like Altin Gün.
There is some more traditional jazz and soul outfits on the mix including one from Chip Wickham’s new album called “Astral Traveling.” And we’ve also got a few indie tracks floating around like a new track from an all-girl LA-based trio called Automatic.
Check out the full playlist (and some video from a few of the artists) below. Links on how to support each artist in the playlist.
Sweet little video for the new Automatic single

April 2023 Mixtape Playlist
We’re in East London this month to share a new mix of music in the sub genre of Jazz Exotica. We’ve got almost two hours of new music jazz, soul and psychedelic music from El Michels Affair, Sudan Archives, Photay, Sven Wunder, Surprise Chef, Tenderlonious, and Biig Piig.
We kick the whole mix off with a Les Baxter tune called “Quiet Village” from his 1952 album, Ritual of The Savage. This track is one of the pillars of jazz exotica for me — a little bit of Hawaiian sway, and a whole lot of big band jazz. I think you can trace a lot of music on this mix back to this sort of composition… and even though it is over 70 years old now, I feel like it still sounds fresh today.
But before we get into the mix, here are a few featured videos from this month’s podcast:
The new Bulgarian Cartrader video: LAB
The bonkers new video for Sudan Archives’ new single, “Home Maker”

The January mixtape is here early! As is tradition, we are releasing the first mixtape of the year on New Year’s Eve. The tradition started a couple of years ago when we were all locked away in our houses. We had to host NYE parties in isolation. And since the Jan mixtape is always a compilation of all the best electronic music from the previous year, we thought it was the perfect soundtrack for your socially distanced parties.
The January mixtape is always a compilation of all the best electronic music from the previous year. We’re revisiting tracks from Floating Points, Four Tet, Maya Jane Coles, Clive From Accounts, Slow Rotation Inc., Axel Boman, Fred Again.., The Blessed Madonna, Sofia Kourtesis and many more. And for all of you kids that grew up in the 90s like me, there are a few late night treats in the podcast including remixes of 90s club classics from Ciara, Fatman Scoop and Missy Elliot.
The Monthly Mixtape is also available on iTunes, and Stitcher.

Merry Christmas everyone! We’re very happy to announce that the annual bonus Christmas Mixtape is here again! For this year’s bonus Christmas mixtape, we’re exploring the big band Christmas classics from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. You’ve got your Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Peggy lee, Louis Armstrong, Andy Williams, Doris day, Burl Ives, Stan Kenton, and many many more.
To record the intro, James took a walk in the recently snow-covered Waltham Forest to soak up the holiday spirit. Here are some snaps from the walk:
A bridge to the winter wonderland
And just to set the mood for the music, here’s an 8 hour video of a crackling Christmas Yule log.
Here is a Spotify playlist version of A Big Band Christmas Mixtape in case you are more of a Spotify user.
If that jazzy big band sound is not what you are looking for during Christmas, you should check out some of our Christmas Mixtapes from previous years: The 80’s Christmas Mixtape, A LoFi Christmas, A Whiskey Soaked Indie Rock Christmas Mixtape, A Classical Christmas Mixtape or The Christmas Mixtape 2000!
This month we’ve got new music from Little Dragon, Poolside, The Frightnrs, ODESZA, Scoobert Doobert, Nia Archives, Sea Glass, Soft Double, Albatrauss and Portugal. The Man.
This month we’re returning to form with the mix by creating a sort of musical journey across genres. The aim is to take you just a bit out of your musical comfort zone. There’s indie, there’s breakbeat, there’s tropical, there’s electronic, and there’s plenty of new music that you’ve never probably heard of before. It’s a good one for the last mixtape of the year.
Also, check out our Ten Year Anniversary album in beautiful translucent yellow vinyl. Also available in a limited-edition marbled blue vinyl as well. If you want to give the record a sample before you buy, have a listen on our mixtape special podcast here.
And before we get into the mix, here are a few featured videos from this month’s lineup:
This new video for “New Summers” by De Lux reminds me of the video for Sabotage by Beastie Boys
“What, Me Worry?” video from Portugal. The Man
The trippy new Nia Archives video for her single, “Luv Like”
December 2022 Mixtape Playlist
This month we’re taking you on a two and a half hour journey through the world of underground psychedelic jazz, soul and tropical exotica. Featuring new music from Jazzanova, The Sorcerers, Chip Wickham, Florence Adooni, Sam Wilkes, Kolumbo, Frowein Pedersen, Frank Dukes, Hether, Los Bitchos, Surprise Chef and a new jazz trio that I just discovered out in Sydney called Bentley.
If you don’t recognize any of the artists names above, then you are in for a real treat. You could be forgiven for thinking that some of this music was created decades ago with a few of the artists taking inspiration from the sounds of the 60s and 70s. But I think you will agree that overall, the mix has a very timeless quality.
For good measure, we’ve also peppered in a bit of psychedelic rock in there as well, including another single from Paul Castelluzzo (aka Hether) — we featured a track from his new album, Play It Pretty, a couple months ago, and I just couldn’t help myself to putting another one into the mix. Anyway, this is a real trippy journey through all sorts of psychedelic genres. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.
Oh, and before we get into the mix, here are some interesting videos from the music featured on this month’s podcast:
The rad new Hether video for his new single, “escargo”:
The new video “twenty something” featuring Claude wearing some pretty sweet chainmail headgear:
Gabriel da Rosa’s Brazilian chill vibe:

This month we’ve got new music from Bonobo, Logic 1000, George Fitzgerald, three9four, DJ Susan, Wax Motif, Vince Versa, Roy Ford, The Cooler, Anthony Naples and another fantastic track courtesy of Clive from Accounts.
If last month was a journey through Autumnal music during the daylight hours, then this month is an exploration into the darker side of the season. This is Autumn after the sun goes down.
While last month was a mixture indie rock and the crunchier side of soul, this month is a mixture of Deep House and techno.
It’s all dance, all the way for October. Full playlist below.

October 2022 Mixtape Playlist
This month we’ve got new music from Parquet Courts, Loyle Carner, James Wyatt Crosby, Metronomy, Donkey Kid, hether, Sworn Virgins, Common Saints, Sven Wunder, and two tracks from Pine Barons.

Surreal video for Loyle Carner’s new track “Hate” — directed by Loyle Carner & Greg Hackett
The producer Hether doesn’t have a video for his single “dirty claws” yet, but his video for “escargo” is dope (also a great track)
The Neighbourhood – Devils Advocate
The post-apocalyptic new video from R. Missing: “New Present City”

September 2022 Mixtape Playlist
This month we’ve got new music from Luxxury, Mura Masa, Channel Tres, Shy Girl, Sofia Kourtesis, Harry Romero and a Roosevelt remix of a Jose Gonzalez song called “Swing.” Quite a dancey take on a Jose Gonzalez.
Oh, and on the intro I mentioned my favorite artist names, but I forgot to mention that on top of my favorite monikers, I usually also have a favorite song title from each mix as well. My favorite title on this mix has to go to Suff Daddy this month for his track entitled “Trouble In Wackyland, Part II.” I mean… there’s a whole story in that title before you even press play on the track. I want to know what goes on in Wackyland and what trouble in the land of wack looks like. And if this is part II, what happened in part I ?!?! It’s fascinating. haha.
This mix is like a continuation from last month. The mix starts off with a bit of chilled-out daytime disco and balearic beats to warm you up. Then it dives into some festival-grade electronic music. Featuring new music from, AMEME, LUXXURY, Mura Masa, Channel Tres, Shy Girl, Sofia Kourtesis, Harry Romero, Roosevelt, and much more.
And finally, if you haven’t already, you should check out our Ten Year Anniversary album in beautiful translucent yellow vinyl. If you want to give the record a sample before you buy, have a listen on our mixtape special podcast here.
August 2022 Mixtape Playlist
Happy Friday everyone. Sorry this month’s mixtape is a bit late. The good news is that it’s July! And Summer is in full swing here in the Northern Hemisphere.
This month we’ve got new music from Nubya Garcia, JUNGLE, Fred Again.., BICEP, Axel Boman, Joy Orbison, HAAi, Four Tet, Jon Hopkins, and an electronic producer called “Barry Can’t Swim.”
Last month the mixtape was a celebration of the start of summer. But while last month’s podcast was a mix of summer jazz, surf rock, reggae and island music, this month is a combination of balearic beats, melodic techno, and sunny summer house music.
There’s a full playlist below, but here are some video links to compliment the mix:
Check out the brand new JUNGLE video for their single “GOOD TIMES / PROBLEMZ”
If you couldn’t get to Glastonbury this year, here’s one of the highlights: Four Tet performing “Looking At Your Pager” on stage

This month we have new music from Kokoroko, Yukihiro Takahashi, Surprise Chef, Babe Rainbow, The Psychedelic Aliens…. and many more musicians with names you’ve never heard of
We’ve gone slightly off-script with this month’s mix by adding quite a few tracks from the 60s and 70s.
From Japanese soul to North African Jazz we’ve dug deep into the crates to pull out some absolute gems, including tunes from Abdou El Omari, Yukihiro Takahashi, and the Egyptian legend, Salah Ragab & his Cairo Jazz Band. There’s is a lot of nostalgic 70s sound in the mix this month. Music that aims to sweep you away on a cloud of psychedelic keyboards and yearning hornwork. Like the third track, called “In Mind” by the excellently named Yannis Dreamlake and “The Sweet Enoughs”
But let’s be honest… sometimes it’s good to go back through time to see where a lot of the music from today is being inspired from. And there is plenty of new music on the mix as well. There are new tracks by Kyoto Jazz Massive, Cochemea, Aver and Move 78. And I think It’s very easy to see how their music was inspired by these sounds of the 60s and 70s.
See if you can spot what’s new and what’s old on the mix.

Manu Chao’s album, Próxima Estación Esperanza
and finally, the last track on this mix features a really interesting remix that was inspired by an old Nelly Furtado track. Check out the original music for Nelly Furtado’s track “Say It Right” (featuring Timbaland) I can’t believe how dated it looks now.

Merry Christmas everyone! We’re very happy to announce that the annual bonus Christmas Mixtape is here! This year’s bonus mixtape features a classical Christmas compilation. All the biggest names in classical music — Mozart, Handel, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Holst, Bach, and many many more.
Okay, okay, I know this isn’t the type of music that you normally come to The New LoFi to listen to, but hear me out. These composers and this collection of music represents some of the most well-known and archetypal Christmas music of all time. A lot of the pop Christmas songs we know today will have been inspired in some small way from the compositions presented here.
But I get it, this kind of music isn’t for everyone. It’s not the collection of chart topping Christmas pop songs that you might be used to. Perhaps you could try putting it on as a background soundtrack to your gift wrapping. Or play it low to accompany a fancy dinner. Or, if you just can’t handle the classical Christmas, you should check out some of our Christmas Mixtapes from previous years: The 80’s Christmas Mixtape, A LoFi Christmas, A Whiskey Soaked Indie Rock Christmas Mixtape, 30s, 40, 50s Christmas Mixtape, or The Christmas Mixtape 2000!
Merry Christmas!

It’s the last mixtape of the year! This month’s mixtape includes new music from Khruangbin, Afrojack, Sufjan Stevens, The Landing, James Chatburn, Los Bitchos and this fantastic Turkish Trio called Islandman (check out their Karavan Sessions video below). December’s mixtape settles you in with some feel-good indie music which blends into some psychedelic jazz and chill house. That gives way to some West African influences towards the middle of the mix until we make our way to some house and techno towards the end. That new Afrojack collaboration with Black V Neck is a banger. When that bouncy Dutch house bassline drops, it’s hard not to nod your head to it. And surprisingly, the original sample was taken from the 2000s hit, “No Hands” by Waka Flocka Flame. Check the video for the original below.
Hope you enjoy the last mixtape of the season. Look out for the bonus Christmas mixtape in a couple weeks time.

December 2021 Mixtape Playlist
For the November Mixtape, we slow things down as winter takes hold in the northern hemisphere. The music is more introverted… soulful. Well at least that’s how the mix starts off.
We’ve got new tracks from Nightmares on Wax, Jungle, Diplo, Kraak & Smaak, Bonobo, Soulwax, Monster Rally, and DJ Numark. But before you start listening, check out the brand new animated video for Helado Negro’s new single, “Gemini and Leo.”
This month we also have a terrific cover of the 90s classic “Everybody Everybody” (originally performed by Black Box). It has been reimagined on this mix by Björn Wagner and DJ Nu-Mark as a chilled out banger. DJ Nu-Mark enlists the German funk music ensemble, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band to bring a summery island feel to the 90s dancefloor anthem. But before you listen to the new version of the tune, you should reaquiant yourself with the original song (and video). It’s brilliant.

We’ve also got some fantastic covers in this month’s mix. The first is a new reinterpretation of “Crimson & Clover” by The Shacks. I know this is a track that’s been covered a few times before (Prince, Joan Jett, etc), and honestly, it’s hard to beat the original version by Tommy James & The Shondells, however…. The Shacks bring a modern twist to the track while keeping the soul of the original. Check that cover out around 17 minutes in.
“Crimson And Clover” original version
Joan Jett’s version of “Crimson & Clover”
The other absolutely beautiful cover on the mix is Tensnake’s remix of “Love Will Tear us Apart.” Again… it’s hard to beat Joy Division’s original version, but if you want to hear a dark electronic version of the track, fast forward to about one hour and ten minutes into the mix.

To celebrate we’ve got new music from Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Nubya Garcia, Channel Tres, Flight Facilities, Mura Masa, Green-House, Caravan Palace, El Michels Affair and a band called Celestial Being — Citizens of the World Choir and the London Contemporary Voices. What a name!
There’s also a Pixies cover by Tkay Maidza (see the video below) and a Billy Idol remix by Poolside that reinterprets “Eyes without a face” into a super chilled-out poolside banger. So so good.
Full playlist below along with some videos from the mix — including the amazing video Vincent Desrousseaux directed for Folamour’s single “Just Want Hapiness” and the animated video for Caravan Palace’s new single “Moonshine.” The animation follows a disenfranchised man as he convinces himself that the earth is flat. It drives him to the end of his world… and beyond.

January 2021 Mixtape Playlist
With 2020 coming to an end, we thought it was fitting to put a Christmas Mixtape together that collected all the best new Christmas songs from the last 20 years. It’s the Christmas Mixtape 2000!
There’s just over 2 hours of the best Christmas music from the last 20 years. Scroll right down to the bottom for a full tracklist. But before you do, here are some fun facts and links:
Three Hollywood actors lend their christmassy vocals to the mix — can you identify the three tracks that a Hollywood actor appears on?
There are 16 Christmas covers including one cover of a Maria Carey song and two songs that were originally written by on of the Beatles.
There are two covers of Silent Night. There’s a White Christmas, a Blue Christmas, a Christmas in California and a Christmas in a Chinese restaurant.
Love this totally tripped out rendition of “Little Drummer Boy” by The Flaming Lips:
There are few voices better than Gregory Porter’s for conjuring up the spirit of Christmas. Such a buttery smooth delivery. If you like your Christmas jazzy, this version of “The Christmas Song” is the spot.
Sufjan Stevens is perhaps the most prolific Christmas song composer of the modern era. Did you know that he’s written something like 100 Christmas songs? He started out by just releasing songs for friends and family around the Christmas season, but he’s amassed quite a catalogue over the years.
We’ve only included 2 songs on this mix, but it is well worth exploring some of his compilations. I would recommend Silver & Gold.
Also, the Christmas videos are fantastic, like this one for “Get Behind Me Santa”:
“Last Christmas” is possibly my favorite Christmas song of all time. And while many people have done covers of it over the years, nothing beats the original in my mind. In 2012, The xx did one of the more interesting re-interpretations of the song on BBC Live Lounge that takes the track to somewhere slightly darker.
The Killers have released a few Christmas songs over the years, but “Don’t Shoot Me Santa” is the best one they’ve done in my mind. I like how off-piste it is for a Christmas song as well.
And last, but certainly not least, we kick the mixtape off with a brand new album from French pianist and composer, Christophe Chassol. His new album, The Message of Xmas is the best thing since A Charlie Brown Christmas by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. We’ve only included one track from the album here, but I highly recommend going out and buying the full 6-track album. It’s fantastic from top to tail. My only wish is that it is released on vinyl soon. It would be a fantastic record to put on by a roaring Christmas fire.
The New LoFi is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a 10-track compilation featuring 10 of our favorite artists from the past decade. This month’s mixtape is dedicated to the 10 artists that will be featured on the album. The New LoFi’s founders, Damon and James reminisce about the blog and talk to each artists on the record. It’s like a mini-listening party for the album.
Head over to thenewlofi.com/ten to pre-order the record.

This month we’ve got new music from Session Victim, Tiga, Hudson Mohawke, Disclosure, Verdance, Khi Infinite, Solomun, Monkey Safari, Old Smile and O’Flynn.
I’m designating this mix as the lockdown dance-your-face-off-at-home mix. It starts off smooth with some psychedelic indie and jazz in the beginning before becoming progressively faster as the mix goes on. Perfect for some self-isolation dance party fun.
I got all scientific about this mix and lined up the songs according to beats per minute. So the first track is at like 90 bpm and each song is a tiny bit faster until we end at 130 bpm.
So for example, at around 15 minutes into the mix we feature the title single off of Chip Wickham’s new cosmic jazz album, Blue to Red. The track combines this sauntering percussion with a sweeping harp — yes, a friggin harp. It is reminiscent of other jazz greats like Alice Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, Dorothy ashby.
Then fast forward to the 1 hour mark and we’ve got the new Solomun track that bumps the beat up to 125. It’s a totally different world.
My hope is that if you listen to the mix from start to finish, the transition will be so seamless that you won’t even notice. That was the plan anyway.
Hope you hear something you can get excited about in this month’s mix. Until next time, enjoy the November Mixtape!

The October Mixtape features new music from Bonobo, Laurence Guy, SAULT, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, James Chatburn, Kauf, and more.
This month’s mix really leans into the chilled-out house vibes. Maybe it’s just me trying to hang on to the last scraps of summer, but there is a lot of sunny jazz-house to help you rave out in your living room. That Sable Blanc track, “Amour Gris” is just stellar. And the Nairobi D tune! The Bonobo and T.E.E.D. collaboration to remix an LA Priest track! Laurence Guy’s two subtle bangers; there are just so many back to back understated bangers in this mixtape.
Don’t get me wrong, we got some great indie music in there as well. The new one from Margot Polo, James Chatburn’s new single “Jewellery and Gold,” and Kauf’s latest single, “Time Pass” — all fantastic songs for fall.
Then there is my personal favorite: the quirky tracks like Mezerg’s piano cover of “Riders on the Storm” by The Doors. Or the Pachyman remix of “Ta Que Tiembla” by Buscabulla.
And last but not least, I’ve included two new tracks from the elusive collective called SAULT. The first track, “Free” is this funky fresh (almost pop) song with a break beat and a strong vocal presence. The second track later on in the mix is called “Street Fighter.” Where “Free” is like this funky fresh pop song, “Street Fighter” has this rich layering of percussion that leads you through the track. It’s rougher. Less cleanly produced than “Free” but more sophisticated. And then this orchestral arrangement of strings comes in over top. Ooooo, it gives me chills!
Check out the SAULT website for more information on how to buy their albums.

For the September Mixtape we have new music from Disclosure, Röyksopp, Kamaal Williams, Trentemøller, Foals, LUXXURY, Boys Noize, HAAi and many many more!
I’ll admit that this month’s mix has a bit less sunshine in it. It’s more soulful and introverted. This mix explores the more brooding and autumnal side of music that has been delivered to us this year. I suppose it fits well with the mood that September brings: the days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder.
So while last month’s mixtape was filled with bubbly house and sunshiny indie music, this month features more instrumental jazz, melancholic beats and dark techno. This mix is for solo listening. There is so much atmospheric nuance in this mix that I’d say it’s better suited for headphone listening by oneself rather than being used as a soundtrack for a house party.
Or perhaps this mix would be the perfect companion on a run. After the one hour mark the music starts to up the pace and the beats start to become more and more minimal and aggressive. By the 01:15:00 mark, you have entered a world of driving techno.
Basically, this mix isn’t for everyone, but for those more pioneering listeners out there, I think there is some really interesting and unique sounds for you to discover.
But before we get deep, the mix starts off with something more upbeat: The new single off of LUXXURY’s latest album: “Set Me Free.”
Thanks for listening!
September 2020 Mixtape Playlist
This month features new music from The Avalanches, Metronomy, Romare, channel tres, Bonobo, Röyksopp, SAULT, Kraak & Smaak, LUXXURY — there is just so much good new music on this mix this month!
The mix starts off with a bit of indie and quickly gets into that soul music. The soul gives way to a sprinkling of disco and then gets deeper and deeper into house. This is fantastic for chilling out those hot August summer nights.
The playlist below links to all the tracks. Go support the artists if you like what you hear!
Here’s to discovering some new music that you love. Thanks for listening!
August 2020 Mixtape Playlist
This month we’ve got new music from TOKiMONSTA, Jayda G, Boys Noize, Lone, Star Parks, the Sirens of Lesbos and many more. There’s a good mixture of lo-fi chilled-out beats, indie music and deep house. And loads of other weird and wonderful new music.
There is also some terrific afro beat on there including one from Gordon Koang and another one from the legendary Mulatu Astatke.
At around 35 minutes, we’ve got a new single from an album called “Natures Diary” which combines lo-fi beats with recordings of the natural world. The track is called “Zen Stream” and it’s from a producer called Clouds.
This month we’ve also featured a new track from a Philadelphia-based producer called Jamil Marshall (aka Small Professor). His new single is called “wish cops would stop killing unarmed black people” and it is dedicated to the memory of Breonna Taylor.
The song takes inspiration from Spike Lee’s 1994 film Crooklyn (which feels pretty relevant even today) and the chorus is a rework of Special Ed’s powerful verse from the title song of the soundtrack. It’s a really good homage to 90s hip hop and it’s for a good cause.
Around the 2 hour mark, there is a new track from an Oklahoma-based producer, called HeartWerk . The track is called “Absent” and it is part of a new compilation inspired by lockdown and aimed to protect the rainforest. All of the proceeds from the compilation will be donated to the Rainforest Trust to help fight climate change and deforestation.
Who knew that House music could help save the world?
I hope that you discover something new that you love on the mixtape this month. Thanks for listening!
July Playlist:
June’s Mixtape includes three hours of summer sounds. Featuring new music from Star Parks, Disclosure, Alex Boman, Magic Bronson, Jacques and Agoria.
For me, the music that best represents summer is a combination of Reggae, High Life, Afrobeat and Surf Rock. And I think there is a good mixture of all of that in the first hour of the mix.
Early in the mixtape we’ve featured a track from the king of Cumbia: Raul Llerena Vásquez (aka Ranil). Just last month the record label Analogue Africa released a compilation celebrating the extraordinary output of all the cumbia and psychedelic Latin sounds that Ranil has produced over the years. The track we’ve selected from the compilation to include in this mix is called “Muévete Mi Amor” and it is sure to get you into that Afro Caribbean mindset.
Around about 25 minutes into the mix the music starts to give way to a jazzier more laid-back sound with the new Sweatson Klanks single, “How the Sun Rose.” I just love the way they’ve mixed a soulful beat with meandering horns and a sleepily delivered (and sort of sexy) vocal track
The jazz and soul continues with new tracks from Scrimshire and a new London based duo called Mattari.
Just around the 40 minute mark the jazz starts to get more electronic with Benji B’s dub remix of “Mirage” by Jessie Ware. There’s also a new track by Agoria and the elusive French producer Jacques. The two producers were brought together to create an original motion picture soundtrack for Olivier van Hoofstadt’s new movie “Lucky.” I haven’t seen the movie but the soundtrack is EXCELLENT. No two tracks are the same with music ranging from the cinematic and ambient to hip hop. The album is so rich musically. I’ve listened to it dozens of times over the last month and every time I hear something new.
There is also a new Disclosure track in the mix. It’s called “ENERGY” and it features a vocal sample by Eric Thomas. You might recognize Thomas’ voice from one of Disclosure’s earlier tracks, “When a Fire Starts to Burn.” This time Thomas is channeling his inner gym coach with positive verbal motivation about how to focus your energy. It’s great.
Towards the end of the mixtape there is a new track from a producer called Bad Tuner. The track is called “Weather Report” and it samples an old American news reporter who is reading the weather. The track is super catchy and the video they made features some fantastic freestyle dancing around chinatown New York city.
I hope that you discover something new that you love on this mixtape. Thanks for listening!
June Playlist:
This month’s mix starts off with some jazzy summer tunes before moving into some deep house and disco.
We’ve got a new by a French producer Parx and a remix from Romanian duo Khidja — they’ve revived a classic jazz track with their rework of “Walk On, Bye.”
At around 25 minutes into the mix, the jazz music gives way to something a bit more electronic; starting with a track called “Es Vedra” (Which I think means ‘It will be seen’ in Spanish). The track is off this amazing new album called Linkwood & Foat which is the result of a collaboration between two well known British producers. Well known in completely different genres. On one side of the musical spectrum is Nick Moore — the Scottish techno producer behind Linkwood. On the other side is the critically acclaimed jazz pianist, Greg Foat. The album includes 8 genre-bending tracks that blur the line between electronic music and jazz. It’s become sort of my meditative self-isolation soundtrack over the past month.
I’ve peppered 3 tracks from the album on this mix (which I know is unorthodox) but I just couldn’t help myself. It’s so good.
There is also a lovely little beat curtsey of Quantic at about 1 hour and 10 minutes. I challenge you not to bop your head to that one.
There’s a little mini banger of a track at around an hour and a half called “Harriet Tubman.” It was created by an Australian producer called Harry Nathan and the track samples his producer Ryan pretending to be a talkshow host interviewing Harriet Tubman. Harry walks into the room and is like “Who is Harriet Tubman?” which gives the track its character. But also, who doesn’t know who Harriet Tubman is???
Towards the end of the mix we’ve got some ambient come-down music for you. There’s a fantastic little number from LA-based producer Olive Ardizoni (also known as Green-House). The latest album from Green-House is called Six Songs for Invisible Gardens (which I thought was really fitting for all of those people in lockdown without a back yard or a balcony to hang out in)
All the tracks on the album are named after the plants they conjure: “Peperomia Seedling.” “Sansevieria.” “Parlor Palm.” The track included on the mix is called “Soft Meadow” and you can find that at about 1 hour and 50 mins.
And finally, the mixtape is capped off with a the new single from French-Canadian singer songwriter Josie Boivin (better known as MUNYA).
Her new single is called “Andy & Paola” and it was written and recorded all in her bedroom over the past month. The track is a thank you letter to all of the healthcare professionals out their risking their lives on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic. I thought that was a nice one to end it on.

This month’s mixtape is filled with good vibes. New music from Ben Hayes, Nubia Garcia, Little Dragon, AMTRAC, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, St. Vincent, King Krule and more!
The good vibes begin with a track from English musician, Georgia Barnes (daughter of Neil Barnes — one half of the ’90s UK electronic duo, Leftfield). Georgia started out playing alongside people like Kate Tempest and Kwes, but in 2015 she released her debut self-titled album. According to her record label, the album captured the “hyper-melodic tone of early 00s grime, sweltering, mid-summer west London dub and ragga, sophisticated pop and first wave post-punk agitation.”
This year she’s released her second studio album (called Seeking Thrills) and it has a totally different feel. You might call it alternative pop. Calling it “pop” doesn’t really do the album justice though. It’s more complex than that. One thing you can say without a doubt is that every song will make you want to get on the dance floor.
On the mixtape, we’ve also featured a track from Kraak & Smaak’s new album, Pleasure Centre. It’s the title track from the record and it sounds like a cross between Röyksopp, Todd Terje and Kruder & Dorfmeister. The track starts off really minimal, with just some wood block for percussion. Slowly the melody builds up and up and up. And the melody is this fantastic combination of arabic sounding strings and 80s style synths.
The last song we’d like to call out on the mix is from a German marching band called MEUTE (pronounced “Moy-ta”). The band composes techno songs using marching band instruments. Last month on the blog we featured a video of the band covering a deadmau5 song. It’s amazing to see how the band has taken a song, and a whole genre of music — a genre which has traditionally been associated with computers — and reinterpreted it using real instruments. Just drums and brass, no computers.
There’s something so simple about that kind of analogue reinterpretation. It’s a minimal approach to a genre that already prides itself as being minimal. And In one clever move, they’ve been able to free electronic music from the DJ desk and overhaul the image of marching bands across the world.
Check that video out from last month, and look out for their song to appear towards the end of the mix.

This month’s mixtape includes new music from Big Wild, Modeselektor, Overmono, Dark Sky, Floating Points, and Leon Vynehall. There’s an Anderson .Paak remix, a collaboration between Nightmares On Wax and Fat Freddy’s Drop, and a badass new track from HAAi as well. The mix is wrapped up in two new songs from one of our favorite artist, Amon Tobin. After years of releasing music, the Brazilian producer embarked on an eight year hiatus. So you can just imagine how excited we were to learn that he released not one, but two albums last year.
It’s a bonus mixtape for Christmas! An 80s Christmas Mixtape.
I grew up in the 1980s and for me, the 80s had some of the best Christmas music. A lot of it still feels fresh today. I mean… it’s not Christmas until you have “Christmas Wrapping” by the Waitresses blaring out the radio. And “Last Christmas” by Wham! C’mon. Christmas songs don’t get better than that. And the video for that song! George Michael and his pals retreating to a painfully cheesy 80s ski chalet. Everyone’s hair is ridiculously big and floppy and beautiful. Everything about that song is great.
Speaking of Christmas song videos. There are some seriously good ones out there. Have you ever seen the one from “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” by Wizzard? It features a badly lip-syncing wizard Santa who looks like he’s just come back from a music festival. Presumably, special effects weren’t created when they made that video. Check that one out for a laugh.
Then there is the slightly awkward but brilliant video featuring Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Bing Crosby isn’t just a musical legend, he owned the Christmas category back in the day. On this rendition of “Peace on Earth,” Bing and Bowie get together in a past-meets-present collaboration. The song is great.
What I find funny about the video is how wooden the premise feels. It tries to create a Christmas scene where Bing Crosby is taking care of some stately home in England. When Bowie knocks on the door asking if he can play the piano, Crosby ushers him in. Neither of them know who each other are.
Weirdly, the stereotypical cultural roles are reversed; Crosby is playing the polite and deferential Brit when Bowie calls him the butler, while Bowie is acting like a talk-before-you-think American. It’s like a bad porno. You find yourself thinking: “enough acting, cut to the music.”
Nearly 30 years later in 2010, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly remade the video (and rerecorded the song). I’m not sure which one is funnier.
But this mixtape isn’t about the videos. It’s about great Christmas music from the 1980s. So I suggest you settle down into a cozy spot and make yourself a hot drink. Then pop this Christmas mixtape on.
And listen, if that 80s sound is not what you are looking for during Christmas, you should check out some of our Christmas Mixtapes from previous years. If you want to go highbrow, you can check out our Classical Christmas Mixtape, or if you want to go jazzy, have a listen to our Big Band Christmas Mixtape. We’ve also got A LoFi Christmas, A Whiskey Soaked Indie Rock Christmas Mixtape, or The Christmas Mixtape 2000!
Either way, from all of us at The New LoFi, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Disclaimer: maybe not all of the songs are from the 1980’s. When I put this playlist together, I picked a bunch of songs that encapsulate the music that I remember from Christmastime back in the 80’s. However, some songs from the 70’s might have slipped into the mix. John Lennon’s song “Happy Xmas” for example. Or Bruce Springsteen’s song “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” from 1976. But they all feel like the 80’s. So even though “Step Into Christmas” by Elton John was recorded in the 70’s, it was still playing on repeat on the radio in the 80’s. So it felt very 80’s to me.

To compliment the winter season, the music for this month’s mixtape is more intimate. As the season winds down, the music seems to have done the same.
To start the mix we’ve included a couple of new songs from Toro y Moi’s new project: Soul Trash. The project was originally released as a free dropbox download / Instagram tape drop. What’s interesting about this project is that it’s the first time that we’ve heard music from Toro y Moi that sounded more like a demo than a finished product. And this is worthy of note because Toro y Moi usually has a very tight production style. So having the oppurtunity to hear him working out things in this style — seeing the ‘work in progress’ — gives you an interesting insight into how he creates music.
The mixtape continues with some soulful experimental jazz from the Ishmael Ensemble, Sam Wilkes and this dude called Ernie Hawkes and the Soul Investigators. The album cover art features Ernie hawks in Native American garb, posing on top of a massive civil war era canon. It’s friggin awesome, and the music is too.
The album is called “Scorpio Man,” and the track we’ve included is called “Journey to the Bottom.” It features a funky soul sound that could have been pulled straight out of a 70s crime movie. Or a 70s porn. Depends how you interpret it.
The soul and jazz blends into synths and beats with some new tracks from Floating Points, Bonobo, Overmono and this producer from Texas called Donovan Jones (aka Black Taffy).
Black Taffy’s mixing style has got some fantastic unexpected samples that blend eastern sounds with western hip hop influences. He grew up with the southern Pentecostal church which has also inspired his sound in some ways.
The mix finishes with an American composer who lives in London called Carly Paradis. She’s been part of the team behind the theme music for well known TV and movies like Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan and Line of Duty. This year she’s created a new album called Nothing Is Something. We’re including the first track off that album. The track is called “The Crushing Weight Of History,” and it’s epic.
Hope you enjoy this month’s mixtape. We’ll see you again next year!

To celebrate the month of November, we’ve got a brand new TNLF Mixtape with over an hour of the best weird and wonderful music.
And while “weird and wonderful” new music is what we are all about at The New LoFi, this mix might be too random even for us! But hey, we’re just giving you the music that is coming out now and mashing it up into an eclectic mix for your listening pleasures.
The point is: if you are mostly into accessible pop music, this mix is probably not for you. If however, you enjoy going off the beaten track of well known artists and popular music, then go get your headphones right now.
The mix begins with the first track off of Sampa The Great’s debut album: The Return. The track’s called “Mwana” and it features Mwanje Tembo, Theresa Mutale Tembo and the Sunburnt Soul Choir. We’ve also included an interlude off the album later on in the mix. but you really should go out and buy this album. It’s absolutely spectacular from start to finish
Sampa the Great leads into about 15 minutes of jazz music. But this isn’t your parents style of jazz. This is jazz from today. Jazz that is filled with experimental percussion and deep house electronic vibes. This is jazz being reinvented.
Leading the charge on this journey in England is a South London-based musician called Joe-Armon Jones. We’ve included a couple of tracks from his popular EP called “Idiom” on the mix which he recorded with fellow musician and longtime collaborator, Maxwell Owin. But last month, Jones released his debut solo album entitled Starting Today. If you like what you hear on this mix, you should go get yourself that album.
The jazz continues across the equator with some music from a Sydney-based producer that goes by the name of Godriguez. For the past half decade Godriguez has been operating under the radar producing tripped out jazz-inspired beats and scratchy ambient melodies to keep your head nodding. Most of the music he’s released under his own name has been created on a series of eight “Beat-Tapes.” Each tape includes one 30 to 40 minute continuos track that spans a range of sounds including South American guitar, African, jazz, lo-fi electronic, Polynesian, Flamenco, ambient and traditional Egyptian music. For this month’s mixtape, we’ve included a cut from Beat Tape 8.
Towards the middle of the mixtape, the jazz blends into what can only be described as hip hop inspired house music. It all begins with a Los Angeles producer called Channel Tres.
Tres grew up in Los Angeles. Specifically Compton; a neighborhood known for being a breeding ground for many well known West Coast rappers. His sound is unquestionably influenced by 90s West Coast rap, but reimagined through the lens of classic Detroit house. Add the sultry voice that Channel Tres possesses and you’ve created something very unique indeed.
At the end of this summer, Channel Tres released his second EP entitled Black Moses. The five track EP features Tres using his Barry White-esque voice to summon the soulful era of the 70s. We’ve included two tracks off of the Black Moses EP and one remix he created for Toro y Moi’s track, “Who I Am.”
If you’ve made it to this point in the mix and you are still listening, then you might be ready for the last half. This is where the weird really gets ramped up.
It begins with A collection of Indian, highlife and Arabic electronic music from around the world before moving on to some experiments in percussive electronic compliments of the Whities label.
For the secret tracks, we’ve included some music from Brian Shimkovitz’s cassette deck. Brian Shimkovitz is the man behind this music blog called
“Awesome Tapes From Africa.” It’s the culmination of over a decade of traveling across Africa in order to bring cassette tape versions of the music he’s found back home. The cassette tapes make a nice physical token to mark his journey but they are a practicality as well. Most music is recorded, sold and traded with cassettes around Africa, making it the medium of choice when it comes to sharing and transporting music. The art work is pretty fantastic as well. Check out our post on Awesome Tapes of Africa to see all the really interesting artwork. Check out the sleeve cover for Professor Rhythm’s tapes.
Admittedly, this month’s mixtape is pretty random. But it’s all amazing if you’ve got an open ear.
I don’t know what it is about Fall that makes me feel like listening to indie music. Maybe there is more indie music produced in the Autumn months? Maybe it’s that stripped back sound that compliments the season getting crisper and leaves falling…. it’s like nature is stripping back.
Whatever it is, we’ve started the mixtape off with some indie music. There’s a collaboration between two indie artists that we’ve covered a couple of times on the website separately called Yoke Lore and NVDES. This time they got together to make this track called “Everybody wants to be loved” and it’s an absolute anthem!
There’s also a track from Swedish indie producer called Joel Wästberg (aka sir WAS). We’ve included a track from his upcoming album Holding Onto A Dream which features a collaboration with Little Dragon which is pretty ace.
The indie music continues with an Austin, Texas-based artist called Mat Davidson (aka Twain). He’s just released a new album called 2 E.P.s which is a collection of demos that Davidson performed and recorded inside a van.
The album was originally released as a plain yellow cassette tape. (So LoFi!) One side of the tape is called the New Miami Sound EP (that’s the unreleased material. The other side, the B-side of the tape, is the other EP — it’s called the Alternator EP and that’s the songs he recorded in a van.
I’m including the first single off of the New Miami Sound EP; it’s called “Death (or S.F.?).”
The indie music blends right into the next section of the mixtape which is filled with jazz. This month has been really good for discovering new jazz. There’s a song from this Swiss band called L’Eclair called “Endless Dave” and it’s a twelve minute journey into some pretty funky psychedelic jazz.
The band recorded this album by retreating to the the swiss alps and locking themselves up in a mountain retreat. It’s pretty amazing.
There’s also a track off this new(ish) album called Music for Saxofone & Bass Guitar. The record was composed by these two guys called Sam out in LA. Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes. Additionally, we’ve included a track that Sam Gendel recorded solo (not a part of the Music for Saxofone & Bass Guitar) that is this really trippy electronic / saxophone reinterpretation of “Pure Imagination” — you know, the song from Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory.
The jazz on the mixtape then starts to get mixed in with a bit of African influence with a track from Mulatu Astatke. This guy is the “godfather” of Ethiopian Jazz. The track comes to us thanks to the work that a Lebanese producer called Ernesto Chahoud. Chahoud has spent years searching through old record collections for the very best Ethiopian music. The track we’ve included on the mixtape comes off of Chahoud’s 24-track double LP called Taitu. One LP is called “Ethiopian Stompers.” The other LP is called “Ethiopian Clappers.” It’s a compilation of all the best 1970s dance-floor bangers.
The mixtape rounds off with some fantastic African influenced electronic music including a new one from our fave english producer Dark Sky. There are a bunch of tracks from the Whities label: Nathan Micay, Overmono. And finally, there is a track from Korean producer Hunee which has an absolutely stinking dirty bassline. You’re gonna love it.
What’s up mixtape aficionados? September is here, and with it comes a new mixtape. This month’s mix includes sound from all over the place. From Scandinavia to Southern California. From South America to East Africa.
There is a very world music feel to this months mix. And by “world music” I don’t mean the genre. There is just a wide range of sound that doesn’t necessarily come from the Westernized catalogue of pop music.
The mixtape begins with a band from London called Snapped Ankles. Their music was introduced to me by fellow TNLF contributor Chris B last month, and their album “Stunning Luxury” has been on heavy rotation here at The New LoFi for the last few weeks. The four-piece band are also known to dress up like trees on stage when they play live. It sounds pretty bonkers, but then again, their music is pretty bonkers.
The mix starts off with the first single off of their latest album. It’s called “Pestisound (Moving out)” and it’s hard not to do a little hop around the room when you are listening to it. I’ve also closed out the mixtape with one of their songs called “Come play the trees” which embraces more of their electronic side. so the mix begins and ends with Snapped Ankles. Most mix makers wouldn’t put two songs from the same band on one mix, much less start and end a mix with the same band, but that’s how we do it here on the TNLF Mixtape.
Snapped Ankles are followed up by a track by Tommy Guerrero. Tommy was a famous skateboarder in the 80s and 90s but now he’s making some incredible guitar music inspired by the deserts of the south west United states. When I first came across Tommy’s music, I thought “this name sounds familiar” but I couldn’t remember where I’d heard his music. After a little research, I realized it was the same Tommy Guerrero that I had grown up to watching on skateboard videos with Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen. I couldn’t believe that a guy who was at the top of his game in one thing like skateboarding, was now an incredible musician. Amazing.
I’m including a track off of his album The Endless Road called “El Camino Negro.” For me, the slow wandering guitar summons up tumble weeds, cowboys and the desert. The music video for the track is beautifully shot. Go read the full post to see the video and some of the old school skateboarding clips of Tommy as well.
The mixtape also has songs from Klaves, Sommer, Invisible Minds and a single from Maria Usbeck’s new album, Envejeciendo.
There is a sweet little electronic interlude in the middle of the mix as well. It’s from London-based producers Krywald & Farrer and it includes two samples from their “Persies Edits.” The Persies Edits are a collection of EPs that feature an selection of reworked dance floor gems. these are like old disco tracks, or east african party tunes that Krywald & Farrer beef up and spin into house. What’s even cooler is that all of the EPs are white label vinyls… each one only saw 500 go to press. Nuts!
Happy August everybody. This month we have an extended mixtape which is filled with two hours of songs that were posted to the blog last month.
You can think of this mix like an old school mixtape that has an A-side and a B-side. The A-side is heavily influenced with music found south of the equator. Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and music from parts of west Africa that conjure up sunny summer vibes.
For example, we kick the mixtape off with a track by Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento called “Mantis” which is influenced by the Afro-Brazilian culture that arose after the Portuguese colonization of Brazil. The song transports you to The Amazon rainforest with sounds of birds and insects and traditional Brazilian guitar. It’s a great atmospheric track that will ease you into the mix.
Then we move from Brazil to Mexico with a mariachi version of Elohim’s track “Hallucinating” where we continue the horn theme with Inspired & the Sleep’s new single “Getting Through.”
We round off the “A-side” of the mix with 30 mins of Afro-Caribbean music —- and it all starts with a track called “Brand New Revolution” which we were introduced to on last month’s installment of “What We Are Listening To”. If you haven’t heard of “What We Are Listening To” you should check it out. It’s a monthly column that highlights the musical tastes of aspiring artists — people that have a day job but make music as a side hustle. Specifically people in the media and advertising industry. There’s something about people who work in media. Most of us here at The New LoFi work in media or advertising in some shape or form and we’ve found that a disproportionate amount of people in the industry have a secret passion for music. We’re all really just closet musicians, DJs and producers.
The B-side of the mixtape is all about hip hop and house music. We start off with a mixture of two British hip hop artists. I just love the hip hop coming out of England right now and these two artists are a great example of how the Brits are pushing the genre. The first one is a duo from London who call themselves Subculture Sage. Their latest album is called Niccolo’s Dead but I’ve selected a few tracks from all of their albums including an older song called “1=1=1.” These two guys are definitely influenced by the golden era of hip hop but they experiment with other sounds too.
The Subculture Sage tracks are paired with another British hip hop artist based in Brighton called Ocean Wisdom. He’s like the second coming of Wu Tang clan. Similar to Wu Tang, Ocean Wisdom has got a crew called “The Four Owls.” He’s got sort of a niche background as well. Similar to how Wu Tang were from Staten Island while most of the other New York rappers were coming out of Brooklyn and the Bronx, Ocean is from a seaside town called Brighton on the south coast of England while most of the British rappers are coming out of South London and Croydon and places like that. His sound is also pretty niche like Wu Tang’s was back in the day. It’s weird to think of Wu Tang like this now, but back in the day, they were nerdy. They weren’t just rapping about hoes, money and cars all the time and they took a lot of inspiration from counter culture movements like Kung Fu movies and stuff like that.
So when I see Ocean Wisdom spitting lyrics with an owl mask on and making owl noises in the chorus, It reminds me of how much I loved Wu Tang. Then I heard Ocean Wisdoms track “Ting Dun” where he is joined by Method Man and my theory was complete.
But all of this comparison doesn’t mean he’s not a serious lyricist in his own right. Or he doesn’t have the skills. This guy has a wicked fast tongue. In fact, His song “Walkin’” was noted as having been delivered faster than Eminem’s song: “Rap God.” Ocean managed to fit 4.45 words per second in his track compared to the 4.31 words per second Eminem fit in “Rap God.” If you grew up in the 90s and you listened to Jurassic 5 and Tribe and De La Soul, then you’ll like ocean wisdom. So the B-side if this tape features a little hip hop mix off between these two artists, Ocean Wisdom and Subculture Sage.
The B-side of the mix ends with 20 minutes of house, including a sweet track from Harry Wolfman called “SMBC”. I got to see Wolfman at El Dorado last month and this track was the one that transported me back to his set. That’s followed by an absolute corker by Berlin based producer Michael Greene (aka Fort Romeau) called “Secrets and Lies.” It’s one of those 10 minute tracks that switch it up half way through to sound totally different.
The whole mix ends with a remastered version of Brian Eno’s lunar lament: “Like I Was A Spectator” – a track created decades ago to celebrate the Apollo moon landing and reworked this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the trip. It’s pretty far out, and it’s a great way to wrap everything up.
The July mixtape is about three things: sun, fun, and dirty mother-f-ing beats. Summer is in full swing here in the northern hemisphere so it’s time for some good old-fashioned mixtape.
Let’s talk about what you can expect from this month’s mix. First off, we’ve broken some rules. We’ve been told that when making mixtapes, you are NOT allowed to repeat artists. We mostly follow that rule, but this month I decided to totally throw that rule out the window.
So for example, we’ve selected 3 tracks from Cristiano Crisci’s Dig Delve Damn album. Cristiano is the man behind Clap! Clap! and for this album he visited the Dutch Audio Archives in Holland where he went through thousands of field recordings dating back to the 1920’s! He was able to find some excellent vocals and instrumental tracks recorded in the various Dutch ex-colonies from around the world and then weave those sounds into his recordings. It’s really pretty amazing.
The next repeating artist is Lizzo. Now, Lizzo is a bit on the “pop music” end of the spectrum for this mixtape — and The New LoFi in general — we are kind of an “anti-pop” website here at TNLF. However, we’ve included Lizzo’s single “Boys” in order to include two remixes of the track. One remix from an artist called Black Caviar and the other from Dave Audé. So while it might start off sounding like Pop music, the remixes take it somewhere deep into the house world.
And once we go house, there is no going back! That’s why we installed the FISHER track next. I was in a club in Amsterdam last weekend and I heard his song “Losing it” three times in one night! Which is pretty impressive considering it came out a year ago. But It is still an absolute banger. That big harbour horn on the drop… the really tight apache helicopter percussion…. I’m sure this is going to be on heavy rotation at all of the festivals this summer.
Next we’ve included two Modeselektor tracks back to back. Both from their new album Who Else. I was able to see them perform most of the album live last month in Portugal at NOS Primavera and These guys are just killing it! They’ve been producing music for 20 years now and it appears like they have no plans on slowing down. This is their fourth studio album and the way it blends the worlds of hip hop, metal and experimental music into electronic makes for something very unique. Put this album on and tell me that you don’t feel like an absolute boss afterwards.
Anyway! We hope that you enjoy this month’s mixtape as much as we do (despite the fact that we broke the “repeating artist mixtape” rule).
And as always, if you like one of the artists you hear, please go out and support them by buying some of their music.
Until next month….
Although it’s still technically spring, today felt a lot like summer has arrived (at least in the northern hemisphere, sorry Australia). To celebrate, we’ve put together a mixtape filled with summer sounds and deep house beats.
But before I tell you about the music, I wanted to address some concerns that a few people have had about the mixtape. A couple listeners have complained about the audio quality of last month’s mixtape. They claimed that the audio quality wasn’t the best during certain tracks….and well, they’re right.
But here’s the thing: the monthly mixtape was never meant to be hi-fidelity audio. This podcast is supposed to be more of a sampler. The idea for it was based on actual old school cassette tapes with mixes on them. Mixtapes were the original lofi way to create mixes. I remember sitting by the radio with my finger hovering over the “record” button waiting for the latest single to come on. Compilations would take days, sometimes weeks to create. And then after you’ve collected all of the latest tracks, you could mix up the order by transferring on to another cassette. There was something lovely and tactile about the whole analogue process. The songs you chose, the artwork you could create on the blank cassette tape case….
It wasn’t about excellent audio quality — vinyl records were still far better audio quality back then — it was about curating a mix. It was about sending a message to that girl in High School that you had a crush on or it was about putting together a mix of all the coolest latest tracks so that you could look cool in front of your friends…. that’s what this podcast is all about.
Sure, it might not be the best sound quality but it’s not about that. It’s about discovering new music. And if you hear something you really like on this mixtape, you should go out and support the artist that produced it by going out and buying the hi-fidelity copy. Go buy the track in vinyl or digitally and support one of the artists featured here.

Let’s talk about the music featured on this month’s podcast. The mix starts off with some summery vibes from Photay, Hubbabubbaklubb, Hot Chip, and The Mauskovic Dance Band and a brand new track from Tame Impala. The combination of sunny west african influences mixed with pop house is the kind of music that gets me in the summer state of mind.
As we get into the meat of the mixtape, the sound starts leaning more towards the electronic side of the spectrum. There’s an Anderson .Paak rework, a Nightmares On Wax remix of “Russia” by Fat Freddy’s Drop and a double dose of Justin Faust’s single, “Spellbound.”
We were first introduced to “Spellbound” by Laurence Groom through his Cosmo Disco Set last month. The track is an absolute banger. In this mixtape we pair the original single with an Italio Disco rework.
The mix slows down the pace towards the end by channeling our inner cowboy with Orville Peck’s new single, “Dead of Night.” Reverb-filled slide guitars and a delicate little banjo play you out softly into the sunset.
It’s May! Spring is here in the northern hemisphere. The new website design is here. And there’s a new mixtape for you to listen to!
Since the website has been down for the last couple of months, we’ve had to take a break from the podcast. But now that the new design is up, we’ve decided to put together a new hour-long mix to celebrate Spring.
The mix starts with some sunny-weather West African beats from the likes of Orlando Julius and De Frank Professionals before becoming more focused on House. The idea was to start the mixtape with horns and rhythms which slowly turn into synths and deep house beats. So while we start out with a big band feel — by the end of the mix you’ll be surrounded by a more electronic interpretation of Spring.
There’s some Nachtbraker in the mix…. Azealia Banks…. a Mark Maxwell remix… some Anderson Paak. There’s a fantastic Elliot Adamson remix of “Weak Become Heroes” by The Streets (it’s a pretty old remix now, but still worth a listen). There’s one of my favourite singles from the Kaffe Creme EP; the track is called “Kapo Choc,” and it’s a banger. There’s even two Format:B tracks back to back (don’t judge).
We’ve also lifted a short section of Olof Dreijer’s Resident Advisor mix which is absolutely sick. If you haven’t heard the full mix, you should head over to Resident Advisor and give it a listen. It’s like a 127 bpm party mix the whole way through.
The mix ends with a track from one of my favorite pair of electronic producers right now, Dark Sky. To be honest, I took a lot of inspiration from Dark Sky when putting this mix together. Their taste in music and the way they curate all types of “weird and the wonderful” tracks has been great to follow in the last couple of years. You should check out their monthly show on NTS if you haven’t already.
For now, enjoy the return of The New LoFi monthly mixtape.
Part 2 of The New LoFi Christmas Mixtape is here! We’ve compiled Christmas songs from the last ten years in this mixtape. This includes holiday reinterpretations from bands like The Yeahs Yeahs Yeahs, Mayer Hawthorne, Badbadnotgood, and Sufjan Stevens. There’s loads of original new Christmas songs from bands you know like Phoenix, Best Coast, Delorentos, Röyksopp, Beach House, Deer Tick and a fantastic track from a band called Still A Great Night called “Merry Christmas, Melania” (as in Melania Trump). It’s part activist, part Christmas song, and really funny.
Thank you all for being fans of The New LoFi this year. Have a merry Christmas and a fantastic new year of new music discovery and health!
