Stripping women of their rights has never been about one specific issue. It’s always been about control, and how you exercise control over women. But this war on women won’t just stop with us. Project 2025, which is being implemented line by line is about remaking society so it aligns better with one specific set of far right, nationalistic, religious values. I still can’t exactly explain what happened with the 2024 election, but it does appear as if Trump and his dangerous, extremist allies have won. I’m a big believer in our institutions, but I also spent the past week trying to figure out how they could have all failed us so badly. I understand the sentiment to want to disengage. To find someone to blame. To point fingers and to close the door on working with anyone who isn’t in your immediate group, because you feel as if they’re the only people you can trust. But this idea that organization and community and goodness can’t stand up to any of this is fundamentally untrue. In many ways, America as we knew it might be over, but the ideas of democracy, human rights, civil rights, and knowing right from wrong, are not over, and if we want any sort of future, we can’t lay down now. That is exactly what these wanna-be authoritarians want us to do. And as far as I’m concerned, they don’t get
anything they want.

The story follows the school nurse, Stephanie Morris, as she navigates the influx of unvaccinated students and the resulting disease outbreaks that spread rapidly through the school and community. The narrative illustrates the real-world implications of the president's policy, with outbreaks of diseases like measles, whooping cough, and the flu causing hospitalizations and even deaths among vulnerable students and staff. The story highlights the challenges faced by the school nurse in trying to protect the health of all students, including her own daughter who has an autoimmune condition, without the backing of mandatory vaccination policies. Overall, the episode demonstrates how Donald Trump’s promise to defund schools with vaccine mandates could have devastating consequences for children's health and safety.

To keep democracy’s head above water in 2024 the Democrats need what’s called a trifecta - meaning the Presidency, the House and the Senate - and keeping the senate is going to be a tough slog because Democrats have what’s called a “bad map”. So today, instead of talking about the must win swing races we hear about all the time, we’re going to discuss two Senate races that almost no-one is paying attention to. Two Senate races practically no-one is investing in, because it’s assumed they’ve already been won by Republicans when the truth is they haven’t. American Democrats often function in this weird defeatist culture where we keep fighting over the same 6 states and seeding other states to Republicans with the assumption they’re lost and no Democrat can ever win there. It’s not fair to the people who have different opinions in those states. It’s not fair to the people who lose their rights thanks to Republican policies, and it’s not democratic. People should have a candidate to vote for, and that candidate should have the opportunity to win. So today’s episode includes two women, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (or DMP) from Florida and Katrina Christiansen from North Dakota. We’re going to hear their stories and remind ourselves that no state should be written off. That everybody deserves a chance to be represented in America and with so much on the line, we need to support every Democrat running. The party might not be focusing on these two races, but We the People, should be.

I’ve been watching what’s been happening on college campuses with real uncertainty. I don’t believe we’re getting the full story from the media. Much like the horserace neck and neck BS they’re peddling for the election, I feel as if traditional media is pushing narratives with the protests that don’t tell the full picture and it leaves people feeling outraged or confused. As today’s guest David Rothkopf says, “If you want this crisis to be simple, you’re looking in the wrong place. It’s not simple. It’s difficult and it requires grown-ups who have a sense of history and the ability to weigh different and competing ideas at the same time.” As David so aptly points out, our tendency to be tribal has turned these conflicts on college campuses into a Rorschach test where we often end up seeing what we want to see. As Robert Reich said, “There should be nothing inherently anti-Semitic about condemning the ongoing destruction in Gaza”. And yet…that is not how it’s always playing out. So let’s talk about it.

The crisis in the Middle East, like so many issues that truly matter, is complicated and nuanced and simply won’t fit on a bumper sticker. It’s essential that we look at the whole picture and move beyond who needs to be punished (and many do) to set a goal of creating a place of peace and stability. This is also not an isolated issue. Governments around the world are shifting to the far right and supporting each other as they do it. So, whether it’s Putin, Netanyahu, Hamas or Trump, they’re all looking out for number one, and we need to be supporting alternatives who want everyone to succeed, not simply the select few. At the end of the day we need to hold two ideas in our heads at once. Palestinian people deserve a state of their own, without Israeli occupation, and Israel deserves to exist in safety and security in the midst of a hostile region. It’s an incredibly difficult needle to thread, but a peaceful coexistence is what anyone who believes in the rights of humanity should want. Please join us for an important conversation.

In honor of Labor Day we’re going to talk about the importance of the American worker, but more specifically about the importance of union work. American workers have clearly had enough. The majority of us know we can’t carry on like this. That the wealth inequality and the growing chasm between workers and owners is leading this country down a dark path. At their peak, 40% of American workers were part of a union, now that number is under 7%, and look what’s happened - the rich got richer while the poor got poorer and the middle class has all but disappeared. People can’t afford homes, food or health care, and the majority of us have to take a side hustle or gig work on top of our regular jobs just to make ends meet. It’s unsustainable, and the workers of America are beginning to stand in solidarity against it. To talk about the importance of union voices in the fight for our future we are joined by AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler whose federation includes 60 unions and 12.5 million working people across all sectors of the U.S. economy as she gives us a hopeful path to a better future.

We know the conservative movement wants to return us to “a better time”, what they see as the “natural order”, with the white, straight Christian man on top, but even those who see themselves as liberal or centrist can struggle with the idea of changing the status quo, because it feels like a potential losing proposition for people who have always been at the top. That people who would be outwardly opposed to MAGA still feel uncomfortable with all these calls for equality and respect, especially when it’s perceived to question their judgment, or status in society. Nostalgia is a powerful part of the human condition, and it can easily become the filter through which every political, social, and cultural piece of information is absorbed. So if a political movement offers to bring back what has supposedly been lost, or at least keep us at status quo, it’s hard to resist because it speaks directly to the anxieties people have around the social and cultural change America has been undergoing over the past century.

Christian nationalists believe that America is defined by Christianity, and the government should be taking active steps to keep it that way. This is completely antithetical to how our nation was actually set up, but they now have their hands in so many pots - from education, to voting, to human rights - and are backed by such an large amount of dark money, with seemingly endless connections, that the bottom line is if we don’t wake up to the danger of this movement, which in many ways runs parallel with the white nationalist moment and, these days MAGA Republicans, then we’re going to wake up in the near future to realized we live in some version of a Christian autocratic theocracy where our laws, lifestyles, even our morality is dictated by a select few, and the only choices we’ll have left will be conform or suffer. A couple weeks ago we did a pod on Florida and the chaos DeSantis is inflicting on his state. It’s hard not to be cynical about American politics and the American experiment with all that’s going on, but the truth of the matter is we have tremendous leadership right now. The country is doing extremely well. Legislation that became law over the past two years is set to become tangible reality in the next two. Yes, we are looking at an increasingly undemocratic Republican Party who can’t even compromise with itself long enough to get their speaker elected, but we’re also looking at competent, fresh new leadership to counter them, along with new factories, new jobs, new infrastructure. We’re looking at lower drug prices and major corporations paying taxes for the first time. We’re going to have universal broadband for all our citizens, gun legislation and climate protections. Yes, it’ll be an uphill battle to fight back these authoritarian extremists, especially since they now have power, but that’s just hard, not impossible, and with the right leadership and the right attitude, I think we got this.

Marc is an American Democratic Party elections lawyer who served as general counsel for the Hillary Clinton and John Kerry presidential campaigns, and is the founder of the Elias Law Group who oversaw the state by state response to the 60+ Trump campaign lawsuits contesting the 2020 presidential election, where he won all but one minor case, which was later overturned in his favor. It is Marc and the Elias Group who, as the Republicans and their allies turn their attention to using litigation as a weapon against democracy, have been at the front line fighting back. Ron Klain joins us for the post-midterm wrap up. Though not all the results are in, we do know that Democrats will hold the Senate, no election deniers will be in charge of elections, that Democrats have gained governorships and made headway in state houses and the power of hate and division might be on the wain. However, it shakes out, the midterms were a good day for democracy. We might be in for a contentious 2 years, but then again, aren’t we used to that by now? The bottom line is people took this election as their opportunity to register their distaste for extremism, election denialism and political violence. They came out to vote for human rights and bodily autonomy and a properly functioning government. If the country is sick, these elections feels a bit like a fever break. Are we out of the woods? Not by a long shot, but we live to fight another day and should be damn proud of our efforts.

The Attorney General is the state’s top prosecutor meant to represent the public interest at the state level. An AG has the power to hold politicians accountable, to promote justice and equality and to protect our democracy. This is not a job that should go to just anyone. It certainly isn’t a job that should go to criminals and party shills, which is exactly who these women are running against. The difference between Jen & Rochelle and their opponents is the difference between women with rights and women without rights, the difference between votes that count and votes that don’t count, and the difference between the law that looks out for the people, and the the law that protects the powerful. AG is a position you should know, and these are candidates you should know about. Electing these women would make such a tremendous difference to the state, but also to the rule of law across the nation. We just need to get them across the finish line.

Rick Caruso is that candidate, a lifelong Republican billionaire who switched his party affiliation to Democrat just 3 weeks before declaring his candidacy for mayor. He’s already spent $60 million dollars of his own money trying to buy his way into the job. This is something as an electorate we should not only be aware of, but watch out for in other places. Our democracy should not be for sale and we should be putting people in positions of power who want to serve the people not enrich themselves.

When we last had Teri Kanefield on the show she was reminding us that just because we weren’t seeing the results we wanted didn’t mean the wheels of justice weren’t turning. People wanted so badly for the DOJ to tell us they were investigating Trump, for Trump to be arrested, for RESULTS, but Teri has always believed that the fact that we were seeing so little, was good news for the health of the rule of law. She’s always stressed how important it is to not rush the process or abandon the rules simply because we wanted to. That one party has made it very clear they’re ready to abandon democracy and the rule of law and Teri has been equally clear we shouldn’t help them do that by abandoning the rule of law ourselves. 5 months later, after the search of Mar-a-lago we can see she was right when so many others were wrong. That Merrick Garland has been working diligently all this time and that justice might be finally on its way.

As our guest David Bender points out “It’s hard to watch the 1/6 hearings because it’s like looking directly into the sun. This 4th of July I thought we’d revisit why were are doing this podcast in the first place. What’s at stake and what why we need to care about this country and the direction it’s heading. America is at a crossroad. There is a real possibility that we will cease to have democracy in the United States. As Rothkopf says, “Republicans don’t just want to repeat the “Big Lie”, they want to repeat the ability to do what Trump WANTED to do and disenfranchise the American people.” Holding Trump accountable is essential, but almost more important, is defeating anyone who would undermine the integrity of our elections for their own power. We have to recognize that the majority of the country doesn’t believe this “noxious right wing cocktail of lies” but it’s up to us to make sure those who do, aren’t the ones making the decisions. After a copy of Justice Alito‘s draft majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health leaked to Politico. In less than a year Governor Hochul has gone from Governor by default, after the abrupt resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo, to leading gubernatorial candidate for New York’s November’s election. Born and bred in upper New York State, Governor Hochul is lawyer, a mother and lifetime public servant, Governor Hochul is also a tireless advocate for women’s rights and women in leadership. She stepped up to the plate when opportunity called, and she’s a big proponent of more women feeling the confidence to do the same. Governor Hochul makes the argument that Democrats must, and can, protect our majority in government and that we need to reach out to anyone who believes in democracy and the American experiment to fight for values that are currently under attack. Governor Hochul really seems to be the real deal. A leader who believes in listening, collaboration and learning from others. She’s also not afraid to get scrappy if the moment calls for it. As Governor Hochul said, “I’m hardwired to help other people, and I’m in a position to do something about it.” Shouldn’t we all have leaders who feel that same pull?

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is not some standalone crisis that started in late February, but rather a much bigger picture that’s coming together. It is a frustrating time. Most of us are losing our minds with the lack of accountability for Trump & Co. We’re mad at the Democrats for not moving faster and doing more. We’re mad at the DOJ for seemingly doing nothing. We’re mad that it feels like we’re the only ones calling for justice and we want results like, yesterday. But, as Teri Kanefield says, “It’s important we don’t fight autocracy with autocracy” because “if we fight like them, we will end up like them” and then our democracy will be well and truly gone. People need to channel their anxiety into productive action. At the end of the day, there is no magic bullet. The only way to save democracy is with more democracy. If we want to live in a democratic, rule of law society we must uphold the values of that society even when abandoning them would be so much more efficient.

We talk about the signed bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, the biggest investment in our country in over 50 years; the Build Back Better Act, that could be the greatest social spending bill in decades; and, we talk in depth about the party that voted AGAINST all of that because they’ve chosen Democratic failure over American success. We question who the Republican Party has become as they’re no longer attempting to govern, but setting up to rule, and based on which voices they’re abandoning and which they’re elevating, it appears the future under the GOP will look a lot more like Hungary than America. If we’re going to be ready to fight for our democracy, we must stop falling for the drama. See the parties through their actions and not the media’s words.
