Welcome to the Tyranny of Thumbs gaming podcast, a podcast where we play a game each week and then we talk about it.
The podcast The Tyranny of Thumbs is created by 5 Player Characters. The podcast and the artwork on this page are embedded on this page using the public podcast feed (RSS).
This is Part 2 of the same night.
If you listen closely you can hear the exact moment where McCoy's "2" beers hit and he becomes not sober. Then we deliberate about whether or not we should go to bed and then we go to bed.
Episode 2
From ben via email:
From James via email:
From Curtis via email:
From Mercedes via email:
Hello everyone! Our Q&A is finally here! A big warm thank you to all who submitted questions. It really does mean the world to us.
For the very astute among us, you may notice a couple things right away:
1) This is a Part 1. We have been known to take our time with our responses to things. And that is on display here.
2) We did not get to every question. Contrary to Zoe's declaration. Even on the upcoming Part 2. So be on the lookout for a follow up, to the follow up. When will this be? That sounds like a scheduling nightmare I wouldn't count on that being right away.
Episode 1
From Scott via email:
From Ben via email:
Reminder! Q&A next week, you know for James. Come out and support J.$ with a question so he can focus on finals, and if you write in via [email protected] then you will receive a patented "🙏" at some random time, probably.
Editor's Note: So it turns out that our titles must be 5 characters long and Neva is 4... I thought about "Neva!" but I'm gunna instead try to pull off "Neva " so if that messes things up I'm deeply sorry.
Edit on Edit: That didn't work. Oh no. I'm consulting people. Wait how did I do it for Gris? This is not fair! Wow the discourse is popping off here. James nailed some shit and we got there boys. Check the title.
We love you all.
This week Elena is back and Zoe is handholding the mic in a new setup... oh and James is streaming the game. Prepare yourselves.
Also, it's a fun opportunity for us to actually dive further into the game now that we've had our initial impressions out of the way in Ep. 1!
Oh and submit your Qs for Q&A to support James and his finals week!
With a podcast that definitely could have been an email, we ask you, our listeners, to submit questions, comments and concerns!
Seriously though! Write a question!
Take care of yourselves out there, we appreciate you.
The one we nearly lost to the storm...
It's more Golden Idol people. H.Y.P.E.
This is the one where we all take a break and just play our home games. Whatever brings us joy. Oh and Gabe joins us!
This week we talk about:
Next week: Rise of the Golden Idol
The thrilling conclusion to our Spooky Games Month: Still Wakes the Deep aka Still Haunts Our Nightmares.
Somehow we convinced ourselves that this game was totally gunna be like Dear Esther. And well... you prolly know how this is about to go. Luckily we had each other's company to help guide us through.
Spooky Games Month:
This week we go on an adventure... into Shakespearian play?
(Also we open this week with some Keenan story telling beef for the hardcore)
Spooky Games Month:
Now this game is something like you've never seen before. What an absolute banger out of nowhere. MUST PLAY IF YOU LIKE ARTSY BS.
If you don't know what this game is, the trailer will help you be correctly confused (but intrigued) as to what this game is.
Many tracks are really interesting on the soundtrack but here is one McCoy's been Jamming on. It's like Dark Trap music. Here is one Zoe linked and said it's just odd this is part of the game.
Spooky Games Month:
We back and instead of James being sick it's McCoy! Let's Go!
Also check out the Game List for October aka Spooky Games Month:
Editor McCoy's Note on the Release Schedule:
Ok, so listen we started recording on Tuesday so I edit on Wednesday and release on Thursday. Does this work for you? If you need me to make a release on Wednesday morning we can talk about it. It's just like, more work and more turn around and like, listen... aren't you just happy there is an episode this week at all? It's a low bar but we cleared it.
There is literally no way anyone remembers how to do any of this right. Grace is requested.
And also, we back baby.
And also, what a game.
"Elden Ring is done."
- McCoy, 2024
Could such words be real? Tune in for an extremely worn-down set of travelers who are finally ready to put their foolish ambitions to rest.
We finally dive into the long-awaited Elden Ring DLC and boy do we have a variety of experiences. Did you know that Gabe plays this game on NG+7? Holy mother of god. He gives some advice on whether or not he thinks that's a good call (Spoilers: He does not).
We also talk a bit about the community reaction, which while it started off incredibly positive has fallen to "mixed" in the one week since launch.
The podcast today starts with a conundrum:
What podcast to Re-Release this week between Control and Dear Esther?
Starting off you get a reflective contemplative editor McCoy trying to solve that problem live on air. He comes in a little "I got this" and ends "Ok, I got a bit humbled and I totally didn't have this". It's a nice journey that ends up delivering some presence, some value, some stories, and overall just proves Editor McCoy deserves his own podcast.
Also, forgive the audio quality, you have no idea the production setup required to make this episode work back in the day, and also... I was young and didn't know what I was doing back then. I still don't know what I'm doing now, but I'm not young anymore.
The long-awaited sequel to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is finally here and we've re-released enough content to figure out how to align our schedules and lives to play it together. Join us for a rather illuminating discussion of the themes of this game, that at least I can say, leveled me up a lot compared to when I had just finished it and was sorta wondering what the heck was going on.
Also, editor McCoy, who essentially barely existed before the re-release era, is now sad as he looks ahead and realizes there isn't as much space for him as there once was.
Editor McCoy takes a backseat to a busy life this week and mostly gets out of the way for an awesome Re-Release of Elden Ring's Seamless Coop Mod. If you like Elden Ring, you've got to at least hear what this mod had to offer. I can't begin to explain how impactful on our entire crew this was.
Also, just a kind note to those playing or planning to play Senua's Saga II. The opening to that game is intense so be sure to give yourself time before bed. I know I wasn't sleeping after that. Yikes.
So, if the first Elden Ring Re-Release was here is how it all started then this time it's here is how it all ended.
It's time.

Be sure to check out Instagram because Elena only knows one type of content and that's pure🔥! (Also she gives more real-time updates on how much we are throwing the schedule)
Tentative Schedule:
We got a plan from helpful folks over at the Disco Elysium subreddit... and it's gone. That's to say, we've had to make small adjustments for life reasons but we are marching forward...
Week 1: Play days 1
Week 2: Play until you get into the next landmass and meet some characters. A nice taster.
Week 3: Some went off into sidequests, some yolo'ed the main story. But one thing is for sure, the divergence is real in this section.
Week 4: It's time to dive into the story if you have been avoiding it. It's time.
Week 5: We close it out, boys. The sun is setting and it's scary out here in the night.
General tips that the community wanted to share as we dive in:
While we attempt the final lap for Disco Elysium this week, we leave you with a time capsule of when Elden Ring first came out. While not forever ago, it feels like a different world.
This week, we actually start to get into the main story. And that means we start to pull at the threads of what felt just moments ago like a fully cohesive tapestry of everyone's alibi... but wait.... was that a lie? What does that mean?

While we take our sweet time with Disco, enjoy a legendary episode from our archives in preparation for Senua's Sacrifice 2.
I'll leave you with a quote that's been resonating with me from Disco Elysium this week as we've been digging into the main story more...
But you would still prefer if we didn't take her away?
That's right, if we didn't take care of the people who end up here, this place would just be a couple of ruins and some cargo containers
-Titus Hardie
This week, after some light hiatus in our actual real lives, we dive back into Disco Elysium. Where we both enjoy the game and discuss how like... you know... how hard it is to pick up a game like this after putting it down.

We've never re-released an episode before, be gentle. McCoy was afraid but James was fearless.
We'll be back for more Disco Elysium next week and with more exciting news on those Insulindian Phasmids

We finally caved and decided to play Disco Elysium (Thanks... James). Oh boy, it's a great game everyone, buckle up. I also say buckle up because like... it's gonna take us a minute. Kindness sensors activate!

Forgive, we started off this episode REALLY slowly (we were all exhausted from daylight savings and epic halo this weekend) but we got there in the end boys.
This is a game that has been bubbling behind the surface for a lot of us and it's time to finally put it out and give it its praise.
This week we finish Tunic and boy does this game shift styles in the second half. I'm glad we stuck with it to see what more it has in store for us. Also, we watch a speed run too, which frankly is something we should be doing more because it's just fun to watch the game you just toiled over get broken apart.
(Also I tried to edit this week with Craig files in hopes it would capture the accidental Ba-Dum-Tis that got fired off in Discord, but alas, it wasn't captured. So you just get Craig audio and since the audio wave forms didn't give away culprit, they are very much still at large)
This week we are joined by Matt to play some Tunic! Zoe, James, and our listeners have been scouting this one so we finally figured out how to align on playing it.
At the beginning of the episode, there is a spoiler-free zone where we try to explain why you might play this game that has received so much buzz but also no one wants to spoil it for you.
We'll come back next week for the full send spoilers and all-game talk after completing the game. See you then.
This week we finally finish up and get to talking about Deadly Premonition! Which is almost certainly a game of all time.
But also like... for the bingo card:
"This week it's time for something sorta kinda different"
- Zoe
This week we answer your questions! What a wild world we live in. Thank you all so much for submitting questions and for the kind words.
(Also thanks for tolerating some tech issues that really got at our mentals this week. Your patience and kindness is always appreciated.)
This week, in what almost certainly could have been an email (but you know this ain't how we roll), we put a quick message about our plans for the new year, ask for your listener questions, and give our game forecast so people can actually know what's going on and get their game related emails in before we've already recorded!

Starting the new year off strong! Thank you everyone for being so kind. May you start the New Year as strong as we hope to.
For the next couple weeks we are going to be releasing GOTY in place of normal podcasts to give us some breathing room to finish Deadly Premonition.
We. Out. Here.
This week we finally get around to talking about Dredge and it's lovely. We've definitely all been vibing on it for the past couple of weeks, in our own way, and it's been exactly what we needed. No doubt about that.
Happy Holidays everyone. Thank you all so much.
Also, hey, Gabe shared with us this FIRE mashup... So, I gotchu dog:

"Ultimately in this game. You play as a moth" - James
"The existential dread of being human, that’s the real horror." - Gabe
A Story Analysis of Soma (By YouTuber Gingy)
This week it's first impressions of Soma, a game so scary it's basically taking us 3 weeks to bring ourselves to play it through. Who knew Spooky Games Month was just going to be us afraid of turning on the videogame?
We are very light on spoilers but more so we talk vibes and the "Safe" mode.
The playlist:
Chill Beats to Freeze To - The Pale Beyond Ambient Mix
We returned from a trek on the ice with James... Still no sign of Gabe though. Last time we saw him he was drunk in a bathroom just muttering to himself that "he was the captain now" and laughing to himself.
The playlist:
Chill Beats to Freeze To - The Pale Beyond Ambient Mix
This week it's time for a long slow exhale as we embark on the journey into the pale beyond.
Also this week we lost like at least 2 crew members so it's down to a cozy Elena, Zoe and McCoy.
The one where we finish where we started. You know like just a quick 2 hours of fire.
Look I know we were late this week, but did we not deliver in the end??
As mentioned in the episode, there will be a follow-up episode to finish this one off as we hit time. Fire episode though so enjoy that :D
Welcome to the one where McCoy is SUPER sick. Forgive!
In this episode, we cover jumping back in to Cyberpunk after all these years of development as we reacquaint ourselves with the game systems in preparation for a deeper dive into Phantom Liberty.
We really don't cover the DLC but mostly just how Cyberpunk has changed. Warning though, spoilers for the main game are sprinkled in this episode as we talk about resuming back into this game world where we left off.
One. Last. Time.
It's finally time, again. (Reuploaded)
It's finally time.
We drop everything to play the final Golden Idol DLC and wrap up with our final thoughts on that game now that we've got it all done/dusted/solved.
Spoilers but, what a delight that game has been!
"What a series"
- Gabe
Join us this week for more wasteland adventures... and also for a window into Elena's love life. Spoilers, she totally loves Gale now and she never even thinks about Asterion anymore.
We return from a hiatus with some Starfield prep, Fallout 3. A true classic... I think?
This week... or more like for many weeks prior to this and skipping recording... we've been playing the Elden Reem Seamless Coop Mod. It's honestly amazing and it's entranced us all over again. Will Elden Ring be GOTY every year until the next game is released from From?
Maybe.
Spreading a podcast out for 3 weeks is a slow and insidious killer.
Actually though, kind of interesting to see how letting a game ruminate on the mind can lead to a more in-depth discussion. I liked it.
Join us this week for our Darkest Dungeon 2 impressions podcast. We are all still getting our feet wet with the game but so good so far.
I mean we just couldn't resist playing the DLC since it launched so close plus we needed a nice chill week while Zoe is super busy. If you enjoyed the base game, I really don't see how you wouldn't enjoy yourself here.
This week we take a chill gander into Dead Cells.
For James and McCoy, what is that game up to these days? And for Zoe and Elena, let's play this for the first time on the switch... on an airplane, or perhaps in the morning tucked into bed.
The one where we try to pivot to Stray from talk about one-handed typing and masturbation. We get there eventually.
A spiritual Successor to Obra Dinn. Need anyone say more?
Gabe is back to Max0r us again. Bonus points if you know where you are after playing any of Gabe's games... This is the Call of Duty Zombies of Hack and Slash games...
In this episode, Zoe and James walk McCoy and Elena through the "finale" of Atomic Heart. And boy, they have thoughts about that!
Is Atomic Heart the greatest game of all time? Find out, by clicking on and listening to our podcast. You know, like all clickbait.
(spoilers: we don't seem to think so)
Here are the Episode Breakpoints if you want to follow along. Forgive us for not really having this sorted, the game was new when we started, we swear.
Oops, McCoy was sick and that threw a wrench in things...

Welcome home... to our alternative home... but hear me out... Bioshock feels different this time around?
Here are the Episode Breakpoints if you want to follow along. Forgive us for not really having this sorted, the game was new when we started, we swear.
No this is not us saying goodbye. You thought...
This week we are joined by Claire (Zoe's sister or Mama Steam's other daughter) to talk about an incredibly strange short artsy storytelling walking simulator called Adios. Also, there's an interesting conversation about habits we've developed playing games over the years and not wanting to blatantly mess them up for choosing the wrong option.
Hope you are well,
ToT
If you listen closely, you realize that we stop caring about "podcast vibes" and just like start talking about whatever comes to our mind for about... half the episode. See if you can spot it!
Resurrected from the dead, Gabe joins us this week to talk about the Dead Space Remake (and to help us not be scared).
This week we dive a layer deeper into Burnhouse Lane after all the trauma has subsided from last week and we can begin to see clearly again. Loving the depth and the vibes. 2023, the year of the comeback?
Also, James Bond is relevant in this episode. Don't believe me?
Welcome to the first (last?) "filler" episode with just Elena and McCoy. While the crew is hard at work playing Burnhouse Lane and not crying afterward, have a nice fireside chat about Phoenix Point (a game from the makers of XCOM).
And WE'RE BACK... with a game that nearly sent us back into retirement. You think I'm joking? I wish I was joking...
TRIGGER WARNING:
You know we don't do this sort of thing often, so heed our warning, this game is disturbing and we discuss that.
So, we were going to start our dating sim block this week, but then this absolutely adorable game came out and we decided to play this instead! I mean, you do get to marry your followers so it's kind of like a dating sim, in a way?

We are flying a pilot-less ship this week without McCoy and trying our best. Thankfully, this ship leads us to the stars and to the intriguing futuristic world of Citizen Sleeper. Join us and special guest Cameron as we navigate through the numerous storylines this game has to offer and also get scarred looking at pictures of aspic. It'll all make sense when you listen. Maybe.

Guess what we didn't start the episode with?
“Let's dive in...”
There was some Elden Ring in this episode... Just at the end and no one else liked it!
“Let's dive in...”
There was some Elden Ring in this episode... Just at the beginning!
“The game where sometimes you see the moon.”
There was some Elden Ring in this episode... Just at the end!
“The one where McCoy actually edits the start of the episode”
While there might actually be no Elden Ring in this episode... there are references to Among Us in... say unsavory ways...
This marks the start of Rafael's Block!
Oh, and TRUST ME there is no Elden Ring in this episode...
It's the final *WINK* Elden Ring Episode *WINK*
Time to take it home boys.
Ok, it's actually more a what you been up to / what's on your mind episode. It's actually nice. I swear.
The Spiritfarer Track This Week
Join us for this "Chill Vibes" episode of Spiritfarer... except an edging joke was made pre-recording and it was essentially too strong for us to ignore.
The Spiritfarer Soundtrack we were listening to.
Join us for this "Chill Vibes" episode of Spiritfarer.
Ok, this might be the final form for a podcast including Elden Ring corner. One episode, but started off with a sick nasty intro bumper with a timestamp if you want to skip to imposter factory. Let's go.
Devastating. My god.
We/McCoy decided to split this recording up into two episodes so that way the fans can get to what they want. This time. Like I'm not doing work like this again. Don't get used to it.
The "what if this was actually just it's own podcast lol" episode.
We/McCoy decided to split this recording up into two episodes so that way the fans can get to what they want. This time. Like I'm not doing work like this again. Don't get used to it.
We talk about Elden Ring... and then we consider talking about A Bird Story. It's alright but there is input lag and like who wants that anymore?
Everyone knew Elden Ring would be a marathon, but as week 3 comes around, we are realizing it's an ultra-marathon, and just about no one was ready.
It's been another week and we are back at it again. Wow. This game is massive. Listen as we slowly come to realize just how insignificant we all are in comparison to this game.
Perhaps it's time to loosen some of the gameplay spoilers around this game and start to share mechanics and strats. It's a tough world out there and we are all out there on our own journey to defeat this game.
Do we need all the help we can get? Maybe, it's hard to say... McCoy keeps home-ruling things as "not allowed" (like summons or coop or even jumping heavy attacks) so maybe he's just on his own journey?
It's the launch weekend of Elden Ring and the podcast crew is getting together to discuss it:
As you can see, we are literally all over the spectrum of Elden Ring skill. But one thing is for sure, no one knows what to think yet but we are actively trying to figure it out. Oh boy, it's here.
It is done. And my god, it's good.
Shoutout to James for his block. Now it's time for something a little different FROM control...
It's finally time. Let's get this game off the backlog, people.
Everspace... You may have seen the ads for it on steam. I know James did because he wanted to play it. Tune in this week for another episode in James' block "I'm getting games off of other people's lists but not McCoy's list"
Should we go out for cigars and whiskey tonight?
Should we go out for cigars and whiskey tonight?

For this game, we brought in our resident dating sim expert Cameron to help guide the way through this "adventure".
Do you think we should have Cameron back on? Do you think we should do a dating sim block? Let us know... or don't? I guess it is your life.
Welcome to something totally different. Unlike our normal show, a game club, we decided to do a tournament rundown for the Valorant Champions Tour 2021. We've all been following Valorant as a game and as an Esport since its creation and this tournament was an incredible way to end a year of increasingly exciting esports play for Valorant. A bright future is ahead of this esports scene and I think we are all eagerly awaiting to see where it goes. SO many amazing teams and amazing games at this tournament, so join us as we do our best to celebrate this festival of "Good Valorant"
Also, shout out to Keyd Stars who get a lot of name drops despite never being in this tournament. Oh wait, are these teams the same? Look this is out of my pay grade... ok?
The boys are back in town. And I mean, what else brings the boys to said town other than... Halo multiplayer. It's back y'all. Halo is here... and it's just like old times except this time with some fresh faces too! Join Zoë, James, Rafael, Elena and Gabe as they patiently listen to McCoy talk about the/his history of the Halo series for 45 minutes. Oh and we share some cool war stories too.
So... turns out the end of the year is around the corner and McCoy is starting to not give a darn anymore. He claims this is a very easy transition for him from caring at all.
Please remember that there are spoilers in this podcast! Not only in literally every episode, but like, especially so in the second of two parts... of a story game...
The question we are all wondering is:
"Does this game throw so hard it catches its own throw?"
For this week's episode, Brandon has returned from his game scouting mission with a bounty of Plague's Tale: Innocence. Join us this week as Zoë, James, Rafael, McCoy, and special guests Brandon and Elena as we all admit how long it took us to place the French accents... and like game analysis and stuff too. Maybe a joke? Idk... probably at least one.
SPOILERS, bro.
So... this game has a demo. If you are even remotely curious, just play the demo. You'll love it.
We basically spend 2 hours trying to not offend those who love Prey.... but also create a kind and thoughtful way of telling them that we didn't exactly have the same experience. It could be us, man. It could be... But is it?
This week we play Prey (2017)... and do that meme with the jealous girlfriend meme with the original prey... Have you seen that thing?
Future McCoy says:
Thanks for putting down the notes...
Also, I mixed and edited this episode at 3 am. I can't tell if it's genius or awful. You know, at the time it felt expressive and real. But now I don't know anymore.
I definitely just sat there listening to it... so that's a bad sign for productivity today.
Just like the people who try to save the magic of this game by not spoiling things for those who haven't played it, we aren't going to tell you anything about this podcast... you just need to listen to it!

Ok, so this one is just James, Rafael, and McCoy talking some trash about nothing and what they've been playing this week. Shout out to James' mom...

What happens if someone rings your doorbell twice in the modern age? What happens when an esports team films their players getting the news their team is disbanding?
Look, if you want to know the answer to these things, listen to this episode.

Apparently, there is a period in the name? What is this like a hipster tech startup company?
This week we play Iris.Fall. Join James, McCoy Zoë, Rafael, and Brandon for the eerie puzzle game and perhaps an even eerie-er podcast where we slowly come the realization that people don't LOVE this game as much as they wanted to.
Also in this episode, if you listen carefully, you can spot a moment where McCoy, not knowing that Rafael is paged and AFK, throws to Rafael and everyone else swoops in for the save.

This week James, Zoë, Elena, Rafael, and McCoy all talk about their experience learning the game as well as playing in a 5 stack together. It's a madhouse in here. In this episode, and in what might be the largest group we've recorded with yet, we talk about our first impressions of this hotly anticipated title Cyberpunk 2077. Did we just play a game on release? That's odd.

"While you were out partying, Zoë was studying the blade"
As the rest of life speeds by with an almost staggering pace, Zoë's been silently honing her combat skills and what we've got for you here is the proof to show for it. This is a podcast from the top of the mountain. Join McCoy and Zoë as they (drunk on victory wine) discuss this iconic game and Zoë's first foray into a "Souls-Like".
Oh and stay till the end of this podcast if you want to hear Zoë's updated boss tier list (warning there might be some trash takes in there because everyone is totally drunk at this point.)

Huge shoutout to Cameron, Rafael, and Matt for being the experienced players who helped guide the rest of us into this wonderful experience without making anyone feel out of place or noobish.

It's the night before Last of Us: Part II and all through the internet, spoilers are lurking...
I swear they have been flying around for a full week before release... What is this? Stop. No spoilers for Part II here! We have all successfully hidden from the rest of the world so we can finish up our discussion of Last of Us (and the Left Behind DLC) and give our no-spoilers thoughts on what might just be to come on release day. Boy... the excitement is palpable.

Join Zoë, McCoy, Elena, James, and special guest Claire (Zoë's sister and our resident Last of Us expert) as we sit down and talk about the original Last of Us. Does it hold up? I would say let's find out but...
... it does. Sorry.

Prologue through Horizon (DLC: Overlord, Firewalker, Normandy Crash Site) We're at war. No one wants to admit it but yumanity is under attack. Surround yourself with the brightest, the toughest, the deadliest allies you can find. It's not a plan. . . but it's a perfect plan. You'll get dossiers on the best of them. Assemble your team of Archangel, the Convict, the Professor and the Warlord, in any order. The Master Thief and the Veteran are available if you have their DLC.
Act 2 (Ep. 2)
Assemble a Team Part 2 up to the Omega 4 Relay (DLC: Arrival, Lair of the Shadow Broker) Your team will have to be strong, their resolve unquestionable. Strengthen your crew by tracking down the remaining dossiers.
(Warning: Completing the Reaper IFF mission will start a mission countdown and if you delay after this point there will be consequences. Before heading off to Mnemosyne will be a good time to do your side quests and DLC missions. If not, DLC can still be done after the final mission.)
Act 3 (Ep. 3)
Pass through the Omega 4 Relay Take the fight to the Collectors in person and kick them right in the daddy bags. You'll have to give everything, even if that means your lives.
Mass Effect 3 Episode Breakdown Week 1: Prologue + Act 1 (Finish Priority: Tuchanka) Week 2: Act 2 (Finish Priority: Horizon) Week 3: Act 3 (Finish this fight.) (Act 2 is pretty long so we recommend doing the DLC in Week 3 before starting Priority: Earth)

And you thought this game was all jank? Honestly, so did many of us... but boy this section might just have turned up the heat. For this section be ready, strap up and strap on because there are decisions a plenty!
Also this week we discuss a possible HD Remaster of the ME series and McCoy weeps when Gabe points out that he will miss out on all the HD sex scenes...

Come one, come all! James and McCoy have been playing the Valorant closed beta for a couple of weeks now and they have thoughts! So many thoughts. Thoughts on the game, art style, strategy... and even teammates without mics.
What a fascinating new player in the Esports space. Has Riot done it again? Honestly, they just might have.

I guess if we have nothing better to do than sit around for the next couple months... we might as well take another deep dive into video game history with Mass Effect. Woah. What have we signed ourselves up for?
Joining us this time around (for the whole series!?!?!?!?!!? only schedules will tell) is our expert Nintendo and Mass Effect correspondent Matt... and... you?

This week we finally bend down to the will of large corporations and play a game recommended by none other than Mama Steam, Year Walk. An interactive art/game experience exploring Swedish folklore.
We also talk about how people who play Quidditch in real life still can't fly on brooms and disgruntled Naughty Dog employees. Enjoy!

This week we prepare ourselves for the Mass Effect saga by... playing some smaller games! Namely Downfall, the sequel (????) to The Cat Lady by Harvester Games. Also this week we try to talk about Mount and Blade II (which basically James saw on stream once and that's about it) and a new XCOM game?
Will Downfall this win this year's Most Cat Lady award? I don't know. Seems like a safe early contender though.

Take care of yourselves.

For this lowkey fireside chat (aka Minisode) McCoy is joined by Matt (our resident Nintendo expert) and Elena to talk about Nintendo's new Stardew Valley clone Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Just kidding, or am I? Don't worry, we settle that straight away.
Stay safe out there.

Doesn't it feel like a lifetime since we last recorded a mainline ToT?
This week we wrap up our Detroit: Become Human and realize that even the title is hitting you over the head with the game's themes... Prepare for another episode where we discuss David Cage's heavy utilization of common story tropes as McCoy breaks a sweat hovering his hand over the censor button because someone wants to talk about racism on air.
Outside of that, look out for more gaming news (spoilers: Coronavirus is canceling everything... but worry not... from the ashes emerges... eSports?)

And now for something completely different! Welcome to a new format of podcast called the "Minisode". Here we talk about games we are currently playing or playing on the side without the strict game club format. Could be current games, could be games James just can't stop playing (like Hades) or honestly who knows the near limitless potential of this new format. Shall we all figure it out together?
Without further ado... we've all been playing it (even Zoë!)... let's sit down and talk about Call of Duty: Warzone!

This week we gather to discuss the exciting conclusion to The Council. You may be aware that are those among us who have had their doubts as to how this game will possibly tie this story up... but fear not... on this week's episode we painstakingly review each diverging storyline and what can ONLY be described as this game's flawless landing.
Mother? Father?? Sister??? What the hell is going on!!!!

There has to be something going on here... She wouldn't have gone missing without telling us... that just doesn't seem like her at all!

This week, as we continue in our "One Person Wonders" block, many of us return to a game that we put down or skipped past years ago only to hear it brought up again, and again, and then again, and then in a meme, and then oh god now it's on Tik Tok... What is happening to the youth? The one, the only: Undertale.

Join us for the "One Person Wonders" block where we play a series of games all made by one developer and marvel at what can be only described as the talent gulf between these people and... us.

This week is the thrilling conclusion to our 3-week dive into Heavy Rain. What better way to end the year and enter the holiday season but to play a game that has aged like fine milk?
For context, we recorded this moments after finishing the game together and are still riding that high. For many of us it's late, we are all bit loopy, perhaps a bit tipsy and make no mistake... McCoy is trashed.
If you want to follow along, check out the game sections below:
Oh and lastly!
While not a hype video for this game, we did put together a silly teaser to give everyone a taste of the truly off the walls shenanigans that were going down in our joint Heavy Rain playthrough

What better way to end the year and enter the holiday season but to play a game that has aged like fine milk? This week we continue our 3-week dive into Heavy Rain. This time though, the only professional cat herder among us can't make the playthrough and things really go off the rails.
If you listen closely in this episode you can hear the puzzle pieces slowly click into place as Zoë starts to realize that literally no one else knows what the heck is going on. What are the letters for again? Eh, who cares.

But don't worry, we won't take it too seriously if you won't. In fact, I'm not sure some of us could take it seriously even if we tried. Good thing we didn't even attempt it.

If "Baba" is "You" and "The Tyranny of Thumbs Podcast" is "Win".... well you know what to do... Give this week's episode a listen!
This week we played Baba is You. A delightful puzzle game that challenges your preconceived notions of what is "True" in a puzzle game. Just be careful. This game is capable of shredding your mind leaving you defenseless to such timeless temptations like "Sitting on your couch and watching TV for the rest of your night because holy moly I'm so exhausted... what just happened? Where am I?"

Yo, do you think it's fucked up that someone has unrestricted access to your IMs, emails, cell phones, computers and bank accounts? We do too... if you pay attention though, you will notice that Josef just casually slides into his SO's DMs like it's nothing. Is that chill? Are we just going to ignore that? Is that common practice these days?
Come along with us as we agonize over who to convict and who to exonerate in this Document Thriller. We also learned some interesting life hacks for how to keep roommates out when you are recording.

Oh, and McCoy rants about Youtube's design that is actively fighting against the user's ability to organize their content and with it their thoughts. This week on The Tyranny of Thumbs we've closed our eyes as we steadily march deeper into our Spooky Games Month. This time with Detention. I know there were some of us left scratching their head when this game made it through the grueling deliberations episode, especially in the face of games like Inside, We Know the Devil and of course, Year Walk. But, without a doubt, this game surpassed all of our expectations and proved it had every right to make the list. What a pleasant surprise for all of us... all of us except one. Poor James, still sleeping with an industrial-grade floodlight as a nightlight from last week's Layers of Fear episode, dug deep once again and could only muster the strength to say one thing "When will Spooky Games Month be over?" Sorry buddy, as you can see below we have a little bit left to go.
Spoilers for the Podcast: No one fights today. I'll leave that up to you if you think that is a good or bad thing.

This week on The Tyranny of Thumbs (you have no idea how hard it is for me to type Tyranny correctly... yikes) we slowly and steadily march further into our Spooky Games Month. This time with Layers of Fear. For those curious, this is one of those actually scary games. So... it isn't for the faint of heart. Unless you are Gabe. Even though he wasn't bragging, he wasn't scared. I was. James bought 10 nightlights on amazon SAME DAY delivery because of this game so proceed with caution.

Why hello there!
This week on The Tyranny of Thumbs (you have no idea how hard it is for me to type Tyranny correctly... yikes) we dive headfirst into our Spooky Games Month. Here we play a bunch of scary(ish... kinda) games for the month of October.
We didn't nail the name down before starting because you know... professionalism... so we leave it up to you, the listener to decide which name they like best. Then, after you have chosen, we ask that you replace that name in your mind every time you see us write or say Spooky Games Month from here on forward. Look, I know that sounds like a lot of work but we ALL have to contribute here.
Oh hey! I almost forgot to mention our epic Bioshock 2 boss battle gameplay compilation hype video! Check it out here! Trust!
Welcome to our Spooky Games Month where we choose spooky games of all shapes and sizes for the month of October!
If you have a question or just want to talk some smack about how poorly we did XYZ you can hit us up on our emails:
[email protected] for those of you who update your computers and like to stay current.

What you have in your hands is a very special extremely experimental one-off minisode.
The premise is simple:
The five of us (and Linnea) enter a cold dark room with 30+ spooky/horror/Halloween themed games and no one is allowed to leave until we have 5 weeks of spooky games chosen. Some would say certain members of us are still there, arguing with only ourselves, looking for others to haunt or perhaps grieving the loss of our very favorite game that didn't make the cut.

This week on the Tyranny of Thumbs we find ourselves on our final journey into Rapture. This time with feeling. Can we make it? Do we lose our sanity as was the destiny of so many who inhabit rapture? Tune in to find out.
The section we played for this episode:
From the start of Dionysus Park to the gripping conclusion.
Next week for something completely different! Next week kicks off our Spooky Games Month where we choose spooky games of all shapes and sizes for the month of October!

This week on the Tyranny of Thumbs we find ourselves once more in the depths of Rapture. This time with 200% more cyclone trap! And Saving? What is this?
Also this week, Adam takes a break from the podcast to realize his dreams of playing games that aren't Bioshock for once in the past 2 months. We all wish him luck. It won't be easy.
The section we played for this episode:
Start of the game to the start Dionysus Park
Next week, we finish this bad boy!

This week on the Tyranny of Thumbs we dive into both the Burial at Sea DLCs for Bioshock Infinite. Tune in to hear what we thought about them... but like spoilers... If you loved rapture, these DLCs an absolute must.
Also this week, James returns to keep the rest of us in line, we learn why couples counseling is valuable for more than just couples as Adam and McCoy learn to play nice and finally those who choose to stay to the end will witness Adam actually using the rating system. What an episode! What a world we live in!

After last week's episode, we all come prepared for war. You know all those football players with the black paint under their eyes? That's us.
Ready or not though, nothing could have prepared us for what we were about to experience... Which was essentially all of us sitting down and shutting up while Zoe, our fearless leader, guides our simple minds into the promise land of understanding. Adam, some would say the false shepherd, chooses not to follow the prophet.
The section we played for this episode:
From the start of Emporia to the end.
Next week we are on to the Burial at Sea DLC!
James, our fearless outreach expert, is still off on assignment and because he isn't here I feel it is my responsibility to link our socials:
Email: [email protected]
This week on the Game Club Podcast you get a front-row seat to see what happens when two people love each other. No... it isn't that... It's that they fight about politics at the dinner table... Right? Isn't that love?
The section we played for this episode:
Finkton Docks to the start of Emporia.
James, our fearless outreach expert, is still off on assignment and because he isn't here I feel it is my responsibility to link our socials:

This week we start Bioshock Infinite and all pretend that Bioshock 2 never existed. Isn't that the way God intended?
Section:
Start of the game up until the Finkton Docks.

This week we played from Olympus Heights all the way to the thrilling(?) conclusion!
Warning to all new listeners who decided to skip directly to episode 3 of our Bioshock playthrough and then approximately another minute in! Don't go. James is making an annoying noise but we swear the podcast is good! Please don't unsubscribe... instead write your hate mail to [email protected]! Now there is an idea!
This week on the Game Club we dive deeper into Bioshock.
Warning though, there are some really hot takes in this episode. Like at one point Keenan posits that roads are good for getting places. I KNOW RIGHT?
Music
This week on a podcast that might be better utilized if lit on fire to keep warm on a day only slightly below freezing, we play an old classic Bioshock.
Most of us have played it, so we all huddle around James (who is playing this wonderful game from our childhood for the first time) as we all slowly come to the realization that he didn't have our same childhood experience. It breaks the hearts of grown adults.
Join as we try to figure out what it means to play a longer game in the game club format, would you kindly.
Music Used
This week on the Game Club Podcast we play the first "Walking Simulator" Dear Esther.
Adam said it best, this was a game that, perhaps most of all we've played so far, directly benefited from having a game club discussion after playing it. There was a lot to dig into both in the game and around it so it was really nice to meet our minds together and try to sort this whole thing out. It was really fun. What a strange and lovely game. Thanks, everyone for taking the time. It meant a lot to me.
Music by Jessica Curry:
I have Begun my Descent
The Beginning
Take it easy, Dad.
This week we play another indie game choice from Adam... Wait!? Don't go? Damnit... These games are really killing our "growth potential"
You can get the original Cave Story free online! Or you can buy Cave Story + on almost as many platforms as Skyrim... What? You are sick of that joke? Why don't you write this then?
Music by Doukutsu Monogatari:
Mimaga Town
(but check out some other rockin tracks like "Balrog's Theme" and "Meltdown 2 (Sand Zone)")
This week on the Game Club we play Risk of Rain 2.
You thought there was going to be a clever podcast description, didn't you? Not today, McCoy is on strike. Odd though, he hasn't listed any terms or even shown up to picket so no one really knows what his deal is with this one. Maybe he is taking his sweet time to make the absolute best protest sign and he just didn't feel it was up to his standards yet. Maybe he objects to the new sponsor Visual? Who can know?
This is one from the archives. Just kidding, that doesn't make any sense but I've always wanted to say that. Maybe one day we can disappoint our listeners by rehashing old episodes. We'll need to be around for much longer to accomplish any sort of podcaster goal like that one.
This episode we talk about Donut County by Ben Esposito. Shout out to our special guest Linnea! A friend of the podcast our game dev drama correspondent. Note though, she is not associated with us in any way and actually doesn't even know who we are or how she ended up on the podcast. Internet safety kids.
Soundtrack by Daniel Koestner & Ben Esposito
This week everyone learns why intros are good and what happens if McCoy is let loose to wreak havoc on the beginning of the show. Seriously? Who let that guy on here. What a train wreck. Other than that we discuss To the Moon, why it made 1/5th of us cry, why the other 4/5ths are callus monsters and lastly, we nod politely as Adam makes bold claims about how he "actually likes" narrative games.
Game:
To the Moon by Free Bird Games
Soundtrack:
[Artist: Kan. R. Gao, Laura Shigihara Album: To the Moon OST]
The gang is back. This week it becomes clear no one can speak French/Spanish or even English as approximately 3/4ths of the episode is dedicated to trying to understand how to pronounce the word "Gris." Is it Gris? Or is it Gris? Perhaps its Gris? The world may never know. Let us know in the comments. Like comment/subscribe/donate/swipe right/super like/retweet if you know the answer.
This week we all put on our Indiana Jones hat and did what he did best: throw women across pits of spikes, forcing her to soak up all the traps along the way and finally ask for a kiss because our health pool is low. You know normal Indiana Jones stuff.
Despite what this intro is having you believe, this is actually not another podcast about ethics in videogames, instead, it's a podcast all about Spelunky! The first non-tile based Rogue-Like game. Boy, do we owe this game a lot. Not enough for me personally to play it another minute past our 3 hours but... hey... thanks for your contribution. Now... where did I put Dead Cells?
This week we take a break from hardcore narrative games with hardcore discussions only suited for hardcore gamers and we opt to play something light-hearted: Human Fall Flat.
Do you ever miss the days when you would occasionally drop something or even just straight up fall over for no apparent reason? Being an adult means you mostly don't fall over anymore and when you do... boy is it not fun. What if I told you I could sell you the nostalgic experience of not knowing how to operate your body properly? Well... to be fair, I can't... but No Brakes Games can with Human Fall Flat!
This week on our beer review podcast we talk all about how 9% beers can catch you off guard whilst at family. Which, of course, leads you to talking politics and you swear you are yelling not because you are frustrated but simply because your uncle is hard of hearing... Look, I know it LOOKS bad but honestly, he just couldn't hear me.
Hi, welcome to our second episode for The Cat Lady. In this episode, we search for answers. Can Adam truly play more of this game without throwing his computer out the window? Where does James draw the line when ransacking innocent people's houses for the greater good? Finally, can McCoy fit the entirety of his foot in his own mouth or only 93%?
If you want to know the answers to these questions you'll have to tune in to find out!
Intro Music:
Don't Follow The Light - The Cat Lady OST (Composed by Michal Michalski for the Cat Lady original soundtrack.)
Oh hey... I used a tin can to record this audio clip... does that make this game art?
This week we play Chapters 1-4 of The Cat Lady. Perhaps the most divisive game yet. If you listen carefully you can hear Gabe (and Zoe) explain how infuriating it is to watch McCoy solve puzzles, James getting caught red-handed asking for the homework and, if you listen hardest of all, you may be able to pick up on the subtle theme that Adam didn't really like this game.
Tune in next week for the exciting conclusion of the podcast temporarily named Can These Friends Keep It Civil While They Slowly but Surely Lose Respect for Each Other. Find out next time!

The Cat Lady OST - Menu Theme
This week on something Zoe has started titling her audio files as "Bound by Games" episode 8, we play Celeste.
Should you choose to look up, you might be able to catch a glimpse of Adam laughing maniacally on the top of Mount Celeste as the rest of us struggle to pass simple challenges like... literally the first screen. I mean there was like... what two jumps? That's not nothing!
Where are we droppin, boys (and Elena)?
Ubisoft good, EA bad? This week we play Apex Legends and Adam feels dirty about it... but at least we aren't playing Fortnite? Maybe we should play Fortnite... While Zoe is away and Gabe is sick, we pull in Elena as a last minute ringer. She, being our resident fish clicking expert, tells us what a Battle Royal is like to play if you can't hit anyone... spoilers... almost everyone admits their experience isn't too far off. McCoy tries to claim that he in fact can hit people, tells a humblebrag story about winning but fails to tie it back to any substantive point... It's a riot...
This week we played The Ground Gives Way. This episode is the equivalent of watching a movie in science class because your teacher was too hungover to teach anything. Sure, it may not have been part of the curriculum but hey how many times since then have you referenced Gattaca to sound smart? I bet you're glad you didn't cut that class!
Also, the astute listener will be able to pick up on the subtle but clear sound of Adam losing all respect for his co-hosts as he realizes that 3/4 people didn't play the tutorial and were wondering why they were lost. Don’t worry though, James “I’m just gunna quit” Herold doesn’t notice it over the faint sound of his keyboard clicking from the run he was in at the time.
This week on... ok we don't have a name yet... what do you think of Bound by Games? Anyways, this week we play Doki Doki Literature Club. The keen listener will be able to discern each host's dating preferences and tendencies by reverse engineering the girls they choose in this dating simulator.
Whether they choose:
Monika, the popular kid organizing the book club who you've always thought was out of your league.
Yuri, a quiet romantic who appreciates the subtlety in the art of writing.
Sayori, your neighbor and close friend since as far as you can remember.
Natsuki, a cutesy but standoffish ("Tsundere" type... what is this pokemon?) who just doesn't see why YOU need to be here at all.
But honestly, once you get to know them all, I think we can all agree there is only one viable choice. Just Monika.
Just Monika.
Just Monika.
Just Monika.
This week on something that will possibly have a different name... like Save Point Game Club or Checkpoint Game Club... or GamsWithJams... *shudder* we play The Gardens Between. Look out for James who had a bad week and likes to take it out on poor indie/artsy games. Just kidding... but really. Actually though, it wasn't just James.
This week on The Good the Bad and the Indie we explore the age old debate of how many humans can you shove into a room to talk about AI before you start to talk about stuff you don't understand. Hint... we pass that number.

This week on The Good the Bad and the Indie we explore the inner workings of the critic creator relationship. Both within Davey and Koda but also within ourselves. Look out for Gabe dropping a bombshell halfway through the episode that Davey and Koda are two sides of the same person and observe everyone else slowly trying to wrap their heads around this as the "Correct" interpretation. If you listen closely you can hear the sounds of frustration as people start throwing out their notes.
For the first episode of "The Good the Bad and the Indie Bullsh*t Adam Likes" we venture into the endless soundscape of Starseed Pilgrim. Many question their sanity. Some try to run.
