As a longtime fan of the Alien franchise, I have been looking forward to seeing director Fede Alvarez's latest instalment Alien: Romulus. The sound team was tasked with designing an audible world that fit in with the original 1979 film but still lives in today's definition of what blockbusters should sound like. Vancouver based Eugenio Battaglia joins us to go over his work as Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer and Re-Recording Mixer on Longlegs. The films amazingly successful theatrical run was fuelled by the unique sounds that drive this movie. Eugenio was instructed by director, Oz Perkins, that he wanted the film's soundscape to feel like rock & roll, so the film is infused with subtle sounds of vinyl records, things going backwards, and a vibe of being gritty and unhinged. The sound design community lost one of its brightest stars this week, with the passing of Ann Kroeber. Ann was a legendary field recordists and she left a legacy of amazing sound work. Her talent especially soared with animal recordings. Her sounds are the basis of countless Hollywood creatures and animal characters. Tonebenders' host Tim Muirhead starts this episode with a few stories of his interactions with Ann that illustrate what a great person she was. When working on a project that features horses on screen, the sound design can be broken up into 3 main categories: Their hooves, Saddle/Bridle, and their Vocalizations and Breathing. How do you use sound to amplify feelings of awkwardness and discomfort? In The Curse the sound design is tasked with making the viewers skin crawl in a very unusual way. The series is not horror, but there are times you feel you have to look away. Long silences (that are never actually silent!) lead to unexpected emotions in both the characters on screen and those watching at home. The show's main characters, played Emma Stone, Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder, lie to themselves and each other while their lives spiral as a result. It is quite a ride. How much Fun would it be to have the opportunity to record one of the few working B17 "Flying Fortress" planes that are still operational? The sound team from AppleTV's "Masters Of The Air" got to do just that. They were able put 60 microphones all over the B17, to record every part of it that made a noise. Then they took those sounds back to the sound editorial team and turned the recordings into to the amazing sound design of the intense air battles featured in the series. Today marks the opening weekend for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel for the character first introduced in MadMax: Fury Road.  So it seemed like a perfect time to reach into our archives and go back to May of 2015, when we did an episode with Oliver Machin about his work on Fury Road. Hear his amazing story of how the sounds of the vehicles used in the film, were recorded in the African desert days before they were destroyed in principle photography. In the new film Música (on Prime) we go into the musical mind of Rudy Mancuso. We learn how everyday sounds are re-contextualized into rhythms and music in his brain while he goes about his day. Because the POV of the film changes from what is real to what Rudy is hearing internally, the sound design and mix are extremely important to sell what is happening to the viewer. Re-Recording Mixers Christopher Aud (also Sound Supervisor) and Aaron Glascock take us through how the action "was recorded on set as if it was an orchestra" using up to 100 microphones, placed perfectly to capture each sound clearly. Then Sound Editorial and Mix had to go through everything that makes up the complex rhythms being played on camera by doors, knives, basketballs, and whatever else is handy. For our 250th episode we got one of our all-time favourite guests, Dane Davis, to come back on Tonebenders. He is going to be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MPSE Golden Reels this year, so we took the opportunity to have him walk us through his storied career. In our first of 3 episodes focused on Sound Design for Documentaries, we talk to the sound team & director of the NatGeo Doc - Fire Of Love. Sound Designer Patrice Leblanc and Re-Recording Mixer Gavin Fernandes talk about working with the film's Director, Sara Dosa, to create the sounds of the many volcanos in the film. Most of the film is built from archive footage that was originally shot without sound. Leaving the audio team a heavy workload to help bring the images to life. The purpose of this crowdsource is to generate a lot of source material from which to algorithmically generate walla crowds of varying densities and compositions.  The goal is to be able to generate not only large gatherings of walla, but also the much more challenging 4-12 person groups that are often needed in post and games.   For this library you’ll bet setting up and recording one side of a real-live phone conversation with someone that you enjoy speaking to.  To do this, we’ll be using earbuds on our phones during the recording (no speakerphone)  The pauses and breaks in your natural speech will be pretty key to keeping the cadence of the walla sounding natural. Brad Engleking tells us about working on the sound for the amazing documentary, Fathom. The film is about scientists that are recording humpback whale calls and trying to decipher their language. Fathom features some of the most beautiful whale recordings ever captured.

We talk to Peter Albrechtsen (sound designer) & David Barber (re-recording mixer) about the intense and unique sound work done on director Robert Machoian's film The Killing of Two Lovers. Visually the film plays out over long steady shots, while much of the films plot takes place off screen with sound taking the lead. The director also chose not to have a composer and instead use sound design, almost as musique concrète, to build the tension.

This film has very little dialog and music, so a lot of the sonic emotion of the film is built by the sound design and the very prominent ambiences used in the film.

The project ballooned into a massive crowdsource, where recordists from around the world captured the sounds of a locked down world. In Part 2 we’ve assembled a collage of contributions with short descriptions from some of the recordists that participated. This is a peaceful, meditative collage so allow yourself some space to take it in properly.

Tim and René sat down with Tom Hammond at his Soundcrafter Studios in Austin to talk about his 25 years of collaborating with director Richard Linklater. Tom tells us about the 12 year post production process on Boyhood, his start editing foley and how he survives and thrives working outside of Hollywood.

In this episode Timothy and René sit down with the sound team behind the new Emmy nominated documentary “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas”. Phil Stockton is a long time Sound-Supervisor based in New York City. In this episode we talk to him about the work he did on Martin Scorsese's new film "Silence". Lots of effort went into creating the soundscape of this story that takes place 400 years ago.
