The Palme D’or winner from this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Anora is the latest film from director Sean Baker. Anora is also one of my favourite movies of the year so far. Co-supervising sound editors (and also the re-recording mixers) Andy Hay and John Warrin discuss how they molded the sound of this film. The film was largely shot docu-style with lots of overlapping dialogue and real life sound obtrusions, and a significant amount takes place in dance clubs with loud music blaring. He tells us about his recent recording gig at Isle Royale Nation Park in Michigan, where he had his mics rolling in the park for 2 summer weeks. The films amazingly successful theatrical run was fuelled by the unique sounds that drive this movie. Eugenio was instructed by director, Oz Perkins, that he wanted the film's soundscape to feel like rock & roll, so the film is infused with subtle sounds of vinyl records, things going backwards, and a vibe of being gritty and unhinged. The sound design community lost one of its brightest stars this week, with the passing of Ann Kroeber. Ann was a legendary field recordists and she left a legacy of amazing sound work. Her talent especially soared with animal recordings. Her sounds are the basis of countless Hollywood creatures and animal characters. Tonebenders' host Tim Muirhead starts this episode with a few stories of his interactions with Ann that illustrate what a great person she was. How do you use sound to amplify feelings of awkwardness and discomfort? In The Curse the sound design is tasked with making the viewers skin crawl in a very unusual way. The series is not horror, but there are times you feel you have to look away. Long silences (that are never actually silent!) lead to unexpected emotions in both the characters on screen and those watching at home. The show's main characters, played Emma Stone, Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder, lie to themselves and each other while their lives spiral as a result. It is quite a ride. How much Fun would it be to have the opportunity to record one of the few working B17 "Flying Fortress" planes that are still operational? The sound team from AppleTV's "Masters Of The Air" got to do just that. They were able put 60 microphones all over the B17, to record every part of it that made a noise. Then they took those sounds back to the sound editorial team and turned the recordings into to the amazing sound design of the intense air battles featured in the series. Today marks the opening weekend for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel for the character first introduced in MadMax: Fury Road.  So it seemed like a perfect time to reach into our archives and go back to May of 2015, when we did an episode with Oliver Machin about his work on Fury Road. In the new film Música (on Prime) we go into the musical mind of Rudy Mancuso. We learn how everyday sounds are re-contextualized into rhythms and music in his brain while he goes about his day. Because the POV of the film changes from what is real to what Rudy is hearing internally, the sound design and mix are extremely important to sell what is happening to the viewer. Re-Recording Mixers Christopher Aud (also Sound Supervisor) and Aaron Glascock take us through how the action "was recorded on set as if it was an orchestra" using up to 100 microphones, placed perfectly to capture each sound clearly. We're launching a crowdsource! Brad Engleking tells us about working on the sound for the amazing documentary, Fathom. The film is about scientists that are recording humpback whale calls and trying to decipher their language. Fathom features some of the most beautiful whale recordings ever captured.

They do a deep dive on how they built a massive stadium full of fans chanting "Wanker" from a small loop group for source. Way back in January, the great Mark Mangini penned a little blog post outlining some audio tropes that he was hoping to put to rest. That post inspired some slack threads, facebook posts, and a good general discussion about how we can be more original and creative when tasked with designing sounds and situations that can have quick and easy answers. In this not-so-serious conversation Mark gets together with Tim, Teresa and René to break down some tropes, spell out some reasons for going there anyway, and maybe…just maybe…we retire the now infamous Wilhelm.

We talk to Peter Albrechtsen (sound designer) & David Barber (re-recording mixer) about the intense and unique sound work done on director Robert Machoian's film The Killing of Two Lovers. Visually the film plays out over long steady shots, while much of the films plot takes place off screen with sound taking the lead. The director also chose not to have a composer and instead use sound design, almost as musique concrète, to build the tension.

As Sound Supervisor on the project, Steve walks us through how this film is different than his main gig on the Netflix series House of Cards and the upcoming MindHunter series.

Guest host Teresa Morrow sits down with documentary film maker Carlo Guillermo Proto and location recordist Pablo Villegas about their new, award winning film "Resurrecting Hassan". In November of 2016 Tonebenders went on an sound nerds tour of New York City.
