On today's adventure, we're hanging out on the shores of Moraine Lake - in the rain, of course - after hiking into Larch Valley during larch season and talking about five little things you can do to elevate your images.
One of the things I find people asking about fairly consistently is what starts separating people when you know the rules of composition, and you know how to break them, and when to break them, when you know your exposure triangle and how to use your camera and all those good pieces, why is it that some people's images have an extra spark or just something a little bit different or better about them?
And so that's what we're going to talk about. Here are some of the things you can do that could possibly be that next bit you need to elevate your people photos.

Welcome back to the long-awaited return of the Travel and Adventure Photography School podcast! I'm your host, Robert Massey, and I can't express how excited I am to bring this show back to life after a 16-month break. Get ready for a fresh perspective as we take this podcast out of the studio and into the great outdoors.
In this episode, recorded beside the stunning Bow River in Banff National Park, I open up about the challenges of creative burnout that led to the podcast's hiatus. As a full-time content creator and photographer in one of my favorite places on Earth, Banff National Park, I found myself struggling to balance work, creativity, and personal time. Creative burnout hit me hard, and I had to reevaluate my approach to find the joy in my craft again.
Throughout the episode, I share my journey of self-discovery, reflecting on the signs of creative burnout, the toll it took on my relationships, and the impact it had on my photography and work. I reveal the strategies and tools that helped me overcome creative burnout, including giving myself space to step away from creativity when needed and finding a new creative outlet through drawing.
I also discuss the importance of reflection and connecting with supportive individuals during challenging times. By reaching out to those who understand and care about us, we can gain valuable insights and rekindle our creative fire.
If you've ever experienced creative burnout or simply want to learn more about maintaining a healthy and sustainable creative journey, this episode is for you. Join us as we venture into the great outdoors, explore new perspectives, and inspire each other in the world of travel and adventure photography.
Thank you for being part of our community, and let's embark on this exciting new chapter together. Adventure awaits! 🌄📸

Travel is picking up again. Countries are reopening borders. Life is getting back to some semblance of what our normal is now. And that means that a lot more people will be packing up their cameras and hitting the air. This is such an exciting moment for many people. To see the world again, have new experiences, and meet people from other cultures. And that also means packing up the camera gear and travelling with it. We put our cameras through a lot, bouncing in turbulence on airplanes, falling from overhead bins on trains, bouncing around on automobiles the world over. To make sure they get to their destinations in working order, ready for you to do your job, you need to pack them properly. Cameras are rugged, but there is a right and a wrong way to pack them. And as much as you can pack them properly, the better chance you won’t be replacing parts or missing shots.

This week's episode will be a big one for many of you out there. I'll be talking about some of the signs you'll have to let you know that you're ready to go pro. Going pro means a lot of different things to a lot of people, but for me, it doesn't necessarily mean quitting your 9 to 5 and going full-time. It can mean selling prints part-time, taking on client gigs on weekends, or going full bore into this. Wherever you're at, the things I'll be talking about today will give you an idea of if you are ready to start taking on those paying gigs.

For the first episode back, I want to get into something that could significantly impact your photography business. Something that should help you land more clients and have some money rolling in the door, regardless of if you are working full time or just doing this on the side. I'm going to help you pitch your work to content managers, creative directors, and anyone in charge of making beautiful things at brands around the world. I've taken on this role at a tourism board and couldn't be more thrilled that I get to work with incredible creatives to help promote the destination I work for. And in the now seven months I've been in this position, I've learned a lot about pitching, what works, and what just irritates me. So today, I'm going to give you four tips to help get your pitch through the door and make it more likely that you will get a callback. This is coming from the perspective of someone working in the tourism industry. Still, I think it applies across a broad spectrum of brands and businesses.
As we get going, there are a few things that I'm taking for granted here with you, the listener. You are interested in working with brands to make content - if you're not, this information really won't help you. You can consistently create fantastic images, and you are ready to put in the work. Because working with brands can be a lot of fun; but it is also a lot of time, energy and effort.

We've talked a lot about mobile photography and the gear you can use to make yours better for the last few weeks. And it would seem, from the way I talk on here, that you really only have two choices in the type of camera you use to make things; your phone camera or a fancy interchangeable lens camera.
But that's not all the choices you've got to make extraordinary things.
So, this week, I'm going to give you 4 alternatives to mobile or mirrorless cameras that can help you create things on the go. We won't get into drones, phones, DSLRs, mirrorless, or rangefinder here.
I want to give you four legitimate options that take you away from the standards of content creation. And open up some new possibilities.

Photography can be a bit difficult to prioritize, even if it is your main gig. I've been so focused on teaching, building new websites, transferring content and prepping for the new year (along with the regular family blowouts) that I haven't really had time to hit up the mountains yet in the new year.
And I know I'm not the only one that has this happen to them. When life gets busy, and there are many things to focus on, crafting images can get pushed to the back burner. For me, photography isn't just about work. It's also a creative release and a way to relax and see the world. And that's what photography is for a lot of people. When it gets pushed to the bottom of the list, it means that I am working too hard and not focusing on my mental health, and I'm sure that goes the same for everyone out there. Relaxation and mental health are integral to getting the most out of life, and if you want to create better photos, you need to be out shooting often. So don't let your photography just sit idle.
With that in mind, today's episode is all about things you can do to get out shooting more often.

Mobility and movement are key as travel and adventure photographers. When our bodies hurt or when they just don’t feel right, we just don’t shoot as well. We won’t necessarily want to get into places or be able to get into positions to take great shots.
For me, one of the keys to keeping moving is mobility. Last week we talked about yoga and a few other wellness tools I use to keep moving. Well, this week I’m bringing my friend and adventure buddy and fellow photographer Sarah Kuindersma, a Muscle Activation Technique specialist and photographer, onto the podcast to talk about some of the things we can do as photographers to move better and to get more mobile.
Sarah has made a special YouTube video with stretches and mobility specifically geared towards photographers. You can find that video here.
You can find more about Sarah and her work here.
If you're in the Calgary area, you can work with Sarah one on one. Find her at Active Sports Therapy in Calgary's SE.

Going diving under an exploding volcano, swimming with hammerhead sharks, exploring the peaks of Nepal, and living on the beaches of Bali. Sounds amazing doesn't it?
Well, that's just part of the story of travel photographer Nikola Kostic and his life.
Today on the podcast we are talking to Nikola about travel photography, guide books, sailing, diving, and common sense while traveling.
My favourite quote from the interview:
“I find all these places I’ve been to, people are super friendly. I think there is no traveller who is thinking of the world as a dark and gloomy place and people as bad if you are travelling enough. I have yet to meet anybody who has travelled a little bit who thinks the world is a dark place.”

As winter starts to deepen over the Canadian Rockies, I got to thinking about winter landscape photography. I know so many photographers who hunker down over the snowy months, not wanting to go outside when it's cold or out into blizzards to create new content. And that makes me truly sad. I love the winter and the landscapes it presents. Yes, winter landscapes are not as colourful or as bright as those in the spring, summer, and fall, but they have a unique beauty. That's why I wanted to bring you today's episode to get you out of your house and into the snow to capture some of these magical landscapes.
For today's episode, I'll give you 8 tips to capture fantastic winter landscape photos.

Instagram is one of the world’s most widely used and popular social media platforms. It is the one ubiquitous with photographers, given that it is a highly photo and video-centric platform. We don’t have to use it as creatives, but many of us choose to. And sometimes, our photos end up looking just terrible when they get uploaded. The colours change, details are lost, things just look weird.
But, we can help fix all that! And it’s nothing too technical or overly difficult to do. Today we will teach you some of the best settings to export photos in 2020 for Instagram.

Travelling is such an amazing experience. But, I don’t necessarily love the act of getting to some of these places. There are those days where we won’t see our gear much because we will be in a bus seat for 12-hours or in an airplane for 18-hours to get to where we are going. And then there is the transit to the accommodation, or another flight, or another bus ride. You get where I’m going. The act of getting somewhere can be rough on not just our minds and bodies but on our gear as well.
So let’s talk about 8 rules for packing your photography gear for long haul travel days.
The 8 rules we will cover today are:
Rule #1 - Keep Your Gear With You
Rule #2 - Limit what you are bringing
Rule #3 - Get a Padded Cas
Rule #4 - Disassemble Everything. Every Single Time.
Rule #5 - Store It Tightly
Rule #6 - Secure the Extra Items

Too often I see new photographers and artists focused on turning their art into a monetary stream. This is NOT NECESSARY! We don't HAVE to monetize everything we do (despite what society seems to be telling us). You are allowed to just do something for fun, relaxation, and because you like to make it.
This episode is all about making art for the sake of making art, not to make money.

This week on the podcast we are talking about Camera Ecosystems, and what you are really buying when you buy into one camera company.
This comes as I find a lot of people focusing on the specs of one camera body over another because I feel like people are forgetting what really matters in these instances.
This is why we are talking about Camera Ecosystems.
Camera ecosystems are comprised of all the parts of a camera, the camera body, the camera lenses, the lighting equipment, the ergonomics, the menu system, and so many more little intangibles.
We start by looking at lenses and then move onto ergonomics. These are two of the most important things to consider when investing into a new camera ecosystem, beyond just the specs of a new camera body. Because, really, that new camera body is great and all but you are really investing in the glass a company produces and the way that camera feels. Because you will be able to upgrade that camera body every couple of years.

Today, we are talking about a type of photography nearly everyone has tried, phone photography. Most people know this by now, you don’t necessarily need to have another camera with you as you can produce some pretty stunning results simply by using the phone you already have. In a lot of cases for those of us who are hiking or traveling, it’s awesome to have such a highly powered camera that fits in a pocket and doesn’t weigh 10 or more pounds.
But too often I see great photographers who take terrible pictures with their phones and simply people who don’t know how to get the most out of this amazing device. So we are going to offer 8 tips to greatly improve your phone photography.
Tip #1 - Shoot in RAW
Most phones today have the ability to shoot in RAW. On some, this can be accessed through the native camera app. On others - like the iPhone 11, you have to use a third party camera app. RAW opens up a whole new world of editing options that simply aren’t there if you are shooting in any other format.
Tip #2 - Stay away from digital zoom.
There are many many phones that claim to have massive zoom ranges because of their digital zoom capabilities. But digital zoom is terrible. Even with the advent of computational photography, phones just can’t compare to actual optics.
Digital zoom happens whenever your phone leaves the available focal length of your optical zoom. It works like when you crop in on a photo in an editing program. It’s essentially enlarging your image. Digital zooming increases the pixel size, decreases resolution and decreases the image quality.
Tip #3 - Don’t use in-phone filters.
Most phones will give you the option to shoot with a filter enabled, like adding extra warmth or enhancing vibrancy. There are many reasons you don’t want to do this, but I’m going to give you two.
Firstly, this takes away your ability to edit the image. Secondly, phones overdo nearly every automatic editing process. So just do it yourself in post when you have a lot more control.
Tip #4 - Get an app that lets you shoot in manual mode.
Some phones will let you shoot in manual by digging into the settings of the native camera app, others force you to download a third party app to do this. But it is so well worth it. Just like on a bigger camera, get out of auto mode.
Tip #5 - Use an App You Love
This may take some trial and error to find the right one that fits your style. But there are many many different types of third party camera apps available on the market for both Android and iPhone. It is worth looking into the ones that allow you to shoot in RAW and in manual mode to find one that suits you.
Tip #6 - Brace yourself and stabilize that phone
So often I see people holding their phone out at arm’s length and putting themselves in unstable positions and trying to take photos.
Treat your phone like you would a big camera and brace it properly. Hold it close to your body, hold it with two hands, rest your arms or the phone down on a solid surface. Do what you can to reduce the shake you will put through the phone.
Tip #7 - Accessorize
