Going pro means a lot of different things to a lot of people, but for me, it doesn't necessarily mean quitting your 9 to 5 and going full-time. It can mean selling prints part-time, taking on client gigs on weekends, or going full bore into this. Wherever you're at, the things I'll be talking about today will give you an idea of if you are ready to start taking on those paying gigs.

For the first episode back, I want to get into something that could significantly impact your photography business. Something that should help you land more clients and have some money rolling in the door, regardless of if you are working full time or just doing this on the side. I'm going to help you pitch your work to content managers, creative directors, and anyone in charge of making beautiful things at brands around the world. I've taken on this role at a tourism board and couldn't be more thrilled that I get to work with incredible creatives to help promote the destination I work for. And in the now seven months I've been in this position, I've learned a lot about pitching, what works, and what just irritates me. So today, I'm going to give you four tips to help get your pitch through the door and make it more likely that you will get a callback. This is coming from the perspective of someone working in the tourism industry. Still, I think it applies across a broad spectrum of brands and businesses.

As we get going, there are a few things that I'm taking for granted here with you, the listener. You are interested in working with brands to make content - if you're not, this information really won't help you. You can consistently create fantastic images, and you are ready to put in the work. Because working with brands can be a lot of fun; but it is also a lot of time, energy and effort.

When you travel, there will be times when you need to create great images in the middle of the day, with the sun blazing down, and shadows are crisp and harsh, and the light isn't good. It's inevitable.

Photography can be a bit difficult to prioritize, even if it is your main gig. I've been so focused on teaching, building new websites, transferring content and prepping for the new year (along with the regular family blowouts) that I haven't really had time to hit up the mountains yet in the new year.
And I know I'm not the only one that has this happen to them. When life gets busy, and there are many things to focus on, crafting images can get pushed to the back burner. For me, photography isn't just about work. It's also a creative release and a way to relax and see the world. And that's what photography is for a lot of people. When it gets pushed to the bottom of the list, it means that I am working too hard and not focusing on my mental health, and I'm sure that goes the same for everyone out there. Relaxation and mental health are integral to getting the most out of life, and if you want to create better photos, you need to be out shooting often. So don't let your photography just sit idle. 

With that in mind, today's episode is all about things you can do to get out shooting more often.

Mobility and movement are key as travel and adventure photographers. When our bodies hurt or when they just don’t feel right, we just don’t shoot as well. We won’t necessarily want to get into places or be able to get into positions to take great shots.

For me, one of the keys to keeping moving is mobility. Last week we talked about yoga and a few other wellness tools I use to keep moving. Well, this week I’m bringing my friend and adventure buddy and fellow photographer Sarah Kuindersma, a Muscle Activation Technique specialist and photographer, onto the podcast to talk about some of the things we can do as photographers to move better and to get more mobile.

As winter starts to deepen over the Canadian Rockies, I got to thinking about winter landscape photography. I know so many photographers who hunker down over the snowy months, not wanting to go outside when it's cold or out into blizzards to create new content. And that makes me truly sad. Styled Shoots are an integral tool for photographers to find clientele and to show off what they can do. Today we’re going to give you nine steps to help you plan your next or your first styled photo shoot.
They can help you show off a new style, dive deep into a new concept, connect with venues and other vendors, and can help you embark on a new photography path. With all that said, styled shoots aren’t just for the wedding industry anymore. They can be integral for anyone looking to do any type of photography. Are you looking to work with brands? Do action-adventure work? Then you can also set up a styled shoot to show off how you would create images. In fact, doing a styled shoot may be the only way you can get regular paying jobs from brands or adventurers because they first need to trust you can create the work. Instagram is one of the world’s most widely used and popular social media platforms. It is the one ubiquitous with photographers, given that it is a highly photo and video-centric platform. Travelling is such an amazing experience. But, I don’t necessarily love the act of getting to some of these places. There are those days where we won’t see our gear much because we will be in a bus seat for 12-hours or in an airplane for 18-hours to get to where we are going. And then there is the transit to the accommodation, or another flight, or another bus ride. You get where I’m going. The act of getting somewhere can be rough on not just our minds and bodies but on our gear as well.

Canon has FINALLY officially announced their new cameras, the EOS R5 and the EOS R6.

Wildlife photography can be a very rewarding experience. But it can be very challenging to get great images. Today, we are going to give you 8 tips to get better photos of wildlife.
These tips include:

1. Using Aperture Priority Mode
2. Fast Shutter Speeds
3. Long Lenses
4. Capture the Scene
5. Monopods and Tripods
6. Autofocus
7. Learning about your Subject
8. Be Prepared

Before you go out taking wildlife photos, always remember this. 
Respect these living creatures. Respect wildlife.

It can be so tempting to do anything you can do to get the best photo you can of wildlife. To try and get them to move or to follow them around, or to get to close to them. But it’s important to not do any of that and remember the best practices for taking pictures of wildlife.

• Observe wildlife from a distance. Don’t approach them ever and don’t follow them. If they start coming towards you, try to get out of their way so both of you don’t come into contact.
• Never feed wildlife. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors, and exposes them to predators and other dangers. It gets them to rely on humans for food, which they should never do. This includes baiting wildlife to get better photos. Don’t get them to rely on humans for their food.
• Don’t bring your pets with you, or at the very least keep them under control.
• Don’t put the animal in harm’s way. This includes getting to close to them. Approaching wild animals may cause them to lash out towards you. This not only endangers your life but that of the animal.
• Be respectful of the animals. They are living creatures with their own lives and their own wants and needs. Your photo is not worth their life and it isn’t worth yours.

This week on the podcast we are talking about Camera Ecosystems, and what you are really buying when you buy into one camera company.
This comes as I find a lot of people focusing on the specs of one camera body over another because I feel like people are forgetting what really matters in these instances.
This is why we are talking about Camera Ecosystems.
Camera ecosystems are comprised of all the parts of a camera, the camera body, the camera lenses, the lighting equipment, the ergonomics, the menu system, and so many more little intangibles.
We start by looking at lenses and then move onto ergonomics. These are two of the most important things to consider when investing into a new camera ecosystem, beyond just the specs of a new camera body. Because, really, that new camera body is great and all but you are really investing in the glass a company produces and the way that camera feels. Because you will be able to upgrade that camera body every couple of years.

This week we are talking about a few pieces of gear I find critical to doing travel and adventure photography. We won't talk about specific cameras or lenses, but give you recommendations for you to go and look at. Because buying gear is a highly personal choice that comes down to what you are shooting, what you want to carry and your budget.

Lenses

• A semi-wide to semi-telephoto lens like the 24-105mm.
  • One of the reasons I love the 24-105 focal range for a walk around travel lens is that you can photograph most subjects in most situations you will come across. The other reason I love this focal length is the lenses aren’t too big and heavy, meaning they aren’t really a burden to carry around for a day. 
• An ultra-wide and fast prime lens like a 14mm f/2.8
  • They give you a sweeping look of the world around you with about a 115-degree field of view. 
  • The low light capabilities, let you take photos inside buildings without worrying about needing to crank your ISO or drop your shutter speed.
  • These ultra-wide angle lenses are great for getting photos inside cathedrals and other old buildings as well as landscapes and cityscapes.

Carrying System

• A proper daypack
  • This means a backpack with an internal frame, waist strap, and proper shoulder straps.
  • The size you need will vary depending on what you are doing. I need a 35L for day-hikes but only a 15-20L for city explorations.
• Get rid of your over the neck camera strap. It hurts the body, throws your posture off, and is generally terrible for you.
• The Peak Design Capture Camera Clip
  • Carry your camera on a belt or on your backpack strap, taking the weight off your body
  • Easier and more secure than a strap

Accessories 

1. A Tripod
   1. Look for something lightweight and easy to move that gives you some flexibility.
   2. I use a Vanguard VEO and a Joby Gorrilapod.
   3. Check out this amazing new, lightweight travel tripod from Peak Design. It's one of my new favourites.
2. Polarizing Filter
   1. Circular polarizers are filters that mount to the front of a lens. 
   2. They allow you to reduce reflections in water and on glass and make the sky more or less blue.
3. Neutral Density Filter
   1. Dark filters you put on your lens (typically on the front) that block light from entering your camera. This allows you to decrease your shutter speed and drag out the way time and light enters your camera.
   2. Smooth out water and clouds, but also blur away tourists in popular tourist destinations.
   3. Do not buy cheap ones, they will reduce your image quality drastically.
4. Microfibre Cleaning Cloths and Cleaner
   1. Keep your lens free and clean from grime so you don't miss any photos.
5. Memory Card Holders
   1. Get two of them to be able to keep your cards in two separate spots.
   2. Really helpful if your camera can shoot to two differ

Today, we are talking about a type of photography nearly everyone has tried, phone photography. Most people know this by now, you don’t necessarily need to have another camera with you as you can produce some pretty stunning results simply by using the phone you already have. In a lot of cases for those of us who are hiking or traveling, it’s awesome to have such a highly powered camera that fits in a pocket and doesn’t weigh 10 or more pounds.

But too often I see great photographers who take terrible pictures with their phones and simply people who don’t know how to get the most out of this amazing device. So we are going to offer 8 tips to greatly improve your phone photography.

Tip #1 - Shoot in RAW

Most phones today have the ability to shoot in RAW. On some, this can be accessed through the native camera app. On others - like the iPhone 11, you have to use a third party camera app.  RAW opens up a whole new world of editing options that simply aren’t there if you are shooting in any other format.

Tip #2 - Stay away from digital zoom.

There are many many phones that claim to have massive zoom ranges because of their digital zoom capabilities. But digital zoom is terrible. Even with the advent of computational photography, phones just can’t compare to actual optics. 
Digital zoom happens whenever your phone leaves the available focal length of your optical zoom. It works like when you crop in on a photo in an editing program. It’s essentially enlarging your image. Digital zooming increases the pixel size, decreases resolution and decreases the image quality.

Tip #3 - Don’t use in-phone filters.

Most phones will give you the option to shoot with a filter enabled, like adding extra warmth or enhancing vibrancy. There are many reasons you don’t want to do this, but I’m going to give you two.

Firstly, this takes away your ability to edit the image. Secondly, phones overdo nearly every automatic editing process. So just do it yourself in post when you have a lot more control.

Tip #4 - Get an app that lets you shoot in manual mode.

Some phones will let you shoot in manual by digging into the settings of the native camera app, others force you to download a third party app to do this. But it is so well worth it. Just like on a bigger camera, get out of auto mode.

Tip #5 - Use an App You Love

This may take some trial and error to find the right one that fits your style. But there are many many different types of third party camera apps available on the market for both Android and iPhone. It is worth looking into the ones that allow you to shoot in RAW and in manual mode to find one that suits you.

Tip #6 - Brace yourself and stabilize that phone

So often I see people holding their phone out at arm’s length and putting themselves in unstable positions and trying to take photos.

Treat your phone like you would a big camera and brace it properly. Hold it close to your body, hold it with two hands, rest your arms or the phone down on a solid surface. Do what you can to reduce the shake you will put through the phone.

When you are choosing which camera to purchase, you are going to hear about sensor size. It’s an important distinction between different types of cameras. There isn’t one ‘right’ and one ‘wrong’ sensor size. Every sensor has different advantages and disadvantages to it. 
So, how do sensors affect the pictures you are going to take? And which sensor is the right one for you to choose? 
Those are questions you should be able to answer at the end of this episode.
There are four sensors we are going to talk about today. In order of smallest to biggest they are:

• Four Thirds
• APS-C
• Full Frame
• Medium Format

Sensor Sizes

• Four Thirds
  • A four-thirds sensor is ¼ the size of a full-frame sensor.
  • For wildlife and sports photographers, the equivalency factor can be a huge advantage. On a micro four-thirds camera system, you can get a lens that reaches a 600mm focal length in a lens body that is more than half the size and weight of a full-frame equivalent. 
  • Light equivalencies. So, just as we need to double the focal length of lenses, we need to think the same way with aperture. On a micro four-thirds lens, you will need to nearly double the stops of light to reach the full-frame equivalent in terms of f-stops.
• APS-C
  • Canon 1.6x crop factor
  • Other companies 1.5x crop factor
  • You would commonly find APS-C sized sensors in entry-level and enthusiast-level cameras
  • They come with the same limitations on low light performance, depth of field, and aperture equivalences that four-thirds sensors do, although at a lower factor. On these sensors, you will need to magnify the focal length of a lens by 1.5 or 1.6 depending on the brand. The same goes for the aperture equivalencies.
• Full Frame
  • Full-frame sensors are based on 35mm film equivalents. They are the industry standard for how focal length makes an image look and how a lens functions in practice. 
  • So the advantages are pretty clear, you get the most advanced tech and amazing glass as well as most commons primary focus for their R&D.
  • But there are some pretty clear disadvantages as well. Price and what you are giving up in a low-end full-frame.  It also comes in the size and weight of big and fast lenses.
• Medium Format
  • Medium format is the big sibling of all of these sensors.
  • It is about double the size of a full-frame sensor
  • These cameras offer some of the very best resolutions, image detail, and just pure quality.
  • These cameras tend to be quite slow (about 2-3 fps) and traditionally very large, although that is changing.
  • The other disadvantage to these systems is the price, as entry-level cameras currently cost $5,000 and go up from there

Micro four-thirds systems tend to be some of the most price-conscious and work amazingly well as travel-based cameras.

APS-C today is represented primarily by Fujifilm’s X-series (although Sony does still have some APS-C cameras). The X-series is seen as some of the most fun cameras to shoot with today and is frequently touted as having amazing i

Ever wondered why you get blurry photos sometimes? Why your images just aren't as crisp as they should be? Then this is the episode for you!
This week we talk about how to get crisper images through: 

• using the right shutter speed
• Some techniques for hand-holding shots at low speeds
• stabilizing your camera with monopods and tripods
• properly using image stabilization in your lens and camera

This is so important in photography because, no matter what you do in post, you can't salvage a blurry photo. So you need to understand how to properly use shutter speeds and stabilizers to get the best possible images.
Some of the things we will cover include:

• The Hand-holding Shooting Guide:
  • Set your shutter speed to at or above your lens focal length
  • Never go below 1/30th.
• The 3-Shot-Method
  • A way to get crisper shots with slower shutter speed.
  • Take 3 images back-to-back-to-back after bracing your body. The middle image should be the sharpest because you haven't moved anything (like your finger pressing or coming off of the shutter button). The first and third shots will have some movement because of this.
• What are IS and IBIS?
  • Image Stabilization and In-Body Image Stabilization (some manufactures have other names, but they work the same)
  • A feature on some lens and camera bodies that allow you to shoot between 3 and 5 stops slower than with non-IS
• When would you want to turn off IS and IBIS?
  • When shooting on a tripod
  • When shooting a panning photo (as long as your lens doesn't provide stabilization for this)
• What are monopods and tripods?
  • Monopods are single-legged stabilizers typically used to stabilize telephoto and super-telephoto lenses.
  • Tripods are three-legged stabilizers that allow you to shoot without touching or moving your camera.
  • Learn about how to properly use a tripod and the gear you should have in the episode!

The exposure triangle is a fundamental part of understanding exposure and how your camera captures a scene. This is what we are talking about in the episode today in part 1 of our Fundamentals of Photography.

If you've never taken your camera out of auto, this episode is for you!
If you are even somewhat unsure of what shutter speed, aperture or ISO are and how they work, this episode is for you!
If you have used a camera for years, but are thinking it's time for a refresher, this episode is for you!
Basically, if you want to take great photos, you need to know this.
The exposure triangle is three camera settings that are critical to how your camera captures the scene in front of you.
Shutter Speed

• This is probably the most important aspect to understand in the triangle. Because if your shutter isn’t fast enough to give you a sharp image, nothing you do in post can save that.
• Shutter speed is a measure of how long the shutter on your camera stays open. This controls how long light is hitting your sensor. Basically, when the shutter is open, your camera is recording time.
• The faster the shutter speed means the less time the shutter is open for, meaning less light will hit the sensor, resulting in lower exposure. The slower the shutter speed means the more time the shutter is open for, meaning more light will hit the sensor and result in higher exposure. So fast shutter speed means less light, slow shutter speed means more light.
• Shutter speed also controls how your camera records motion.
  • faster shutter = frozen movement
  • slower shutter = more movement

Aperture

• Also known as f-stops or f-numbers
• This is a measure of how open or closed the lens’ iris is.
• Controls light hitting the sensor and some depth of field
• Wide Aperture
  • Large opening in lens' iris
  • Small f-numbers (1.4, 2.0, 2.8 etc...)
  • More light hitting sensor because of bigger opening
  • Less depth of field
• Narrow Aperture
  • Small opening in lens' iris
  • High f-numbers (11, 16, 22)
  • Less light hitting sensor because of a smaller opening
  • Higher depth of field 

ISO

• This comes from the days of film, where we had way less control over the ISO. At that time it was the sensitivity of the film you used. Today, we view it as the sensitivity of the sensor to light. Although, technically we’re not controlling the sensitivity
• Higher ISO values
  • Less light needed for photos
  • More grain in images
• Lower ISO values
  • More light needed for photos
  • Less grain in images

A portfolio is a necessity for any working photographer, but it can be challenging to build one well. This week we are talking about ways to build a strong portfolio to represent your work.  

This is a sneak peek into you as a photographer, your abilities, and your style. Let all that shine through!

1. Decide on your Goals for the Portfolio
   • You need to understand why you are building this portfolio. Who is it intended for?
   • Decide which photography genres you are reaching out to with your portfolio. Are you looking for portrait work? Adventure work? Working with brands?
   • Build separate portfolios for each genre.
   • This will mean understanding your target audience for your portfolio.
2.  Select your Best Images
   • This can and should be a challenging process
   • Chose images that have an impact
   • You will need to be very critical and think carefully about why you include each image 
     1. There will be images that have a lot of meaning to you because of the story behind them or the purpose in your life but aren’t compositionally or technically good photos. They will need to go.
   • Ensure you have a diversity of images
3. Decide on the Design of your Portfolio
   • The way you choose to show off your portfolio matters. And the way you choose to do that depends on your target clients.
   • There are many ways to show off your work both in print and digital
     1. Print
        1. 8x10 prints in a portfolio binder
        2. A portfolio book
        3. Smaller prints in a specially designed box
        4. Larger prints that take over a meeting
     2. Online
        1. You can build different galleries that prospective clients can look at and click-through
        2. Build whole slideshows that take them through at your pace
4. Consider the order of your images
   • You want to think about the story your portfolio tells. Don’t just toss the photos in random order. The order matters, so put a lot of time into how people will see the images
5. Produce high-quality offerings
   • Don’t skimp out on the printing quality of your portfolio. Your portfolio shows your very best work, present your photographs in all their glory!
   • This also shows your dedication to having a high-quality product beginning to end. It’s not just about showing you can take good photos. It’s also about showing you know how to finish a project well
6. Get a second opinion
   • Find a photographer you trust to look over your portfolio and talk with you about the images in it
   • Need someone willing to be critical and honest about your work
   • Try and find a photographer who works in the field you are reaching out to

In episode 10 we are talking about 10 things Robert has learned in 10 years of photography. Robert has a long history in journalism and outdoor photography. There are some great nuggets of information here that can help advance your photography.

Tip 1 Be the Director

• Don't just let people be ‘natural’ or do ‘what feels right.' You are going to need to give subjects a little bit of direction to feel more comfortable
• Get your subject to relax by telling a few jokes or talking to them about the things they love
• What your subject is thinking about will come across on their face in the image
• Don’t ask your subjects to ‘say cheese’ get them to say something like ‘mocha’ that ends in an ‘uh’ sound because that leaves your face in a more natural position
• Be ready to fail. Sometimes poses just don’t work for whatever reason

Tip 2: Capturing Authentic Smiles

• This works way better once you’ve gotten your subject to relax as we talked about in tip 1
• Firstly, get your subject to pose however you want
• Next, get them to smile (remember, ‘uh’ sounds like mocha)
• Take a couple of frames with this smile and then say something like, ‘ok that looks great’ take a few more frames right as you say this. Your subjects should relax a bit, giving them less tense smiles and more real smiles

Tip 3: The 3-shot method

• This works well when you don't have a tripod
• Fire off 3 frames. The first image will have some shake in it by pressing the shutter button, the middle frame will be the most stable because you won’t move anything, and the last frame will have shake in it by you removing your finger from the shutter.
• You need to ensure you are standing in a stable way. Plant your feet, soften your knees, bring your elbows in against your torso (or brace them on an object in front of you), and take a couple of deep breaths to relax. Then take one big breath and hold it until after you have shot

Tip 4: Watch for Small Moments

• Catching tiny moments comes from consistency.
  • Set habits include:
    • Planning for shots in advance 
    • Being attentive
    • Not being afraid

Tip 5: Gear shouldn’t limit you

• Yes, certain gear can make shots easier, but don’t let not having a fancy dSLR or mirrorless stop you from making great photos. You can create great work as long as you are will to explore and fail a bit.

Tip 6: Take Care of your Gear

• Your gear takes care of you so do it a favour and take care of it. Clean your lenses and cameras regularly, along with your whole kit

Tip 7: Find a Community

• Creative people build off each other and help each other to grow. They can help you see new places to take your photography and new ways to take images

Tip 8: Learn skills unrelated to Photography

• This grows your mind and helps you to see the world in new ways. And you will likely find new fun things to photograph by doing this.
• It will also help you avoid photography burnout. Because we all need multiple outlets and hobbies. Let your bra

Combine Disciplines

• Look for ways to combine two seemingly different photographic disciplines to create unique images that stand out
• Paul Zizka loves to combine action/adventure photography with astrophotography to create amazingly unique images.
• Check out his image Glowing Home from 2016

Sometimes gear does Matter

• As much as this goes against most traditional advice, that it doesn’t matter what camera you use, there are points where it makes a massive difference.
• Let’s think about Chris Burkard's surf photography. He is well known for his ability to capture surfers in the midst of a wave. These are impactful images, shot because Burkard was right there in that wave as well (or pretty close to it). But to do this, he not only needs a good camera capable of freezing action, but also a wide-angle lens that is a bit more forgiving (because it can be hard to aim when the ocean keeps hitting you in the face), and a waterproof housing. The gear makes a difference here. 
• BUT if you don’t know how to use a camera, if you can’t foresee a shot, know what it takes to make a great photograph, understand composition and light and timing and everything that goes into one. All the gear in the world won’t matter.

Find a Feeling

• These are my own personal reads on the work of these great photographers.
• Chris Burkard creates these images that teem with joyfulness. You can feel it, his energy of a (seemingly, because I’ve never met him) joyful and exuberant person comes through in these images. He lets his emotions be seen in what he photographs.
• Paul Zizka creates these dramatic images under the aurora. They are sweeping vistas, and lots of self-portraits, that are stoic. The people in his images feel like they are in awe of nature, of their surroundings.
• Jimmy Chin, has a feeling of adventure in his images. 
  • He is at the epitome of being an adventure photographer and his photos show true epic moments in the mountains that are a little bit of everything that happens during an adventure.
• So what does this tell us? Let your emotions be seen. And it doesn’t have to be happy emotions. Le

Today we talk about four tips that these masters of photography can teach us to make our travel and adventure photography better.

• Exploration
• Detail
• Preparation
• Participation

Exploration

• True masters of outdoor and travel photography all have one thing in common, they explored. They spent thousands of hours on their feet seeing areas.
• Move around an area. Get to know how it feels. This will come across in your images.
• Ansel Adams was particularly famous for this. He walked all over the national parks in the states, finding the perfect angles for his photographs. He had a love for the land that you can feel in his images.

Detail

• Look for large, sweeping landscapes that are incredibly highly detailed. This is what Ansel Adams was known for. His images are incredibly detailed and they draw you into these amazing landscapes. 
• But there is another way to photograph nature. Look for the small, little details.
• The work of Brett Weston is an amazing example of this. He gives us little snippets of landscapes, like trees and grass in unique patterns and unique shadowing. He reminds us to look for the small details in your scenes.

Preparation

• Look up where the light will be hitting your subject and at what time of day you will need to be there.
• Galen Rowell was a master of preparation. He would spend hours waiting for the light to illuminate his subjects just right.

Participation

• One of the biggest things that Rowell can teach us is to be a part of adventures. You can see that he had a true love for what he was photographing. But beyond that, he knew his subjects because he was a part of what they were doing.
• What this shows is that we can’t just photograph people enjoying themselves travelling, or skiing, or adventuring, but we have to be right in the heart of it ourselves. We need to be able to be a part of the experiences we are photographing. This also means you understand the subject you are attempting to capture much more deeply, and thus you are able to anticipate moments. This allows you to create deeper and more impactful images.

Welcome to a special BONUS episode of the Travel and Adventure Photography School Podcast! Going on from Monday's episode, we are going to give you 10 more ways you can improve your photography from home.

1. Sort and Edit past Trips
   • This is a great time to relive memories of past trips and to find gems you haven't yet edited.
2. Re-edit old photos
   • You’ve likely learned a lot since you first edited some old favourites. Go back and look at some old trips and try re-editing your photos.
   • Who knows, you may just find a few new gems among them.
3. Re-build your Portfolio(s)
   • Now is a great time to look at your photos and really take a critical eye to what deserves to be in your portfolio and what doesn’t.
   • We will also be doing a deep dive into portfolios in another bonus episode soon, so keep an eye out for that bonus content coming up in the next week!
4. Build/Work on your Website
   • A space to show off your work online is great! There are a massive number of paid and free options to choose from. 
   • This gives you a space that is entirely yours to show off your best work.
   • This is a great chance to clean up your website. Get your SEO done right, build a new about page, update anything you want to.
5. Clean up Your Photos
   • This is your chance to really pin down your photography workflow. One of the big things in a workflow is having proper storage of your images. You can create a great directory, sort, cull and keyword your photos, and make them easier to find so you aren’t hunting everywhere for them
6. Spend some time Networking with Other Photographers and Travellers
   • Most people are online right now, seek out spaces where other like-minded folks are having conversations about photography and join in
   • Try and find a local photographers club in your area and join them online.
   • Reach out to photographers you admire
   • This is such a great time to build up a community digitally that you can then meet in person and shoot with once this ends
7. Prepare for future Trips
   • Just because we can’t be outside doesn’t mean we can’t be ready to go.
   • I have a massive list of places I want to go to and things I want to do and this is the prime opportunity to do some trip planning.
   • I pick a location, and find out everything about best times, prices, accommodations, places to go, etc... and put it all into one trip planning document so I'm ready to leave when I can.
8. Increase your Skills
   • There are a plethora of learning options out there (like this podcast). Go and find something you want to learn more about. It could be business related, it could be photography related, or it could just be something you’ve always wanted to learn (like knitting or guitar). Working on outside creative endeavours that make you better at something, even if they aren’t directly related to photography can make your photos better. This is because you are helping to create new pathways in your brain, you are seeing things in a new way, and that can only help you grow your artistic eye.

Welcome to episode 7 of the podcast! 
This was supposed to be part 2 of our 3 part series on learning from the masters. But, in light of recent global events, I wanted something more hands-on than what that series was offering. Something that can provide you with things to do in and around your home because, as we know, lots of people are or will need to be at home for extended periods of time. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still improve your photography as there are lots of awesome photography related things you can do right in your home.

It’s 10 Ways to Improve your Photography from Home

The 10 tips:

1. Practice your lighting through self-portraits
   • Set up a photoshoot to practice your lighting, and you don’t need a subject except yourself. This gives you the chance to play with different light setups, different styles and learn your gear in a no-pressure environment.
   • You don’t need speed lights or studio lights either, you can use natural light, flashlights, or even candles (just make sure not to set anything on fire).
2. Pick an object, and create 100 different images of it
   • Put it in different locations, different poses, different lighting styles. 
   • Get creative!
3. DIY your own light modifiers and other photo modifiers
   • You can build reflectors, flags, snoots, grids, barn doors, and lots more at home. (descriptions of what these all are will be below our tips).
4. Read your camera manual and get to know your camera inside out
   • Get to know how to use your camera with your eyes closed
5. Pick a room in your house and find unusual angles
   • Treat this like it is a photo shoot. Get in there and take as many unique images of the space as you can
6. Create a photostory of a day-in-your-life
   • Pick a day that is just like any other
   • Teaches you about the importance of documenting the whole story not just the photo at the end (like we talked about in episode 1)
7. Create some forced perspective photos
   • Make small objects look huge in your space or vice versa
8. Create some flat lays of your gear or common travel items
   • This is where you layout your gear (climbing, hiking, travel, photography, etc...) in a nice pattern on your floor/table and take a photo of it all
   • This is great to have ready for your insta feed so you don’t need to make it before heading out
9. Do some composite photography
   • Composite photography is where you combine elements from different images into one image to create a new piece of art
   • Try re-creating scenes from a movie or your favourite book.
   • Ensure that you are shooting each subject in such a way that it is easy to remove the subject from the photo in photoshop (like don’t wear white clothing against a white wall)
10. Read some amazing photobooks
    • Most public libraries have books available online
    • Google Books has a few available as well
11. Get to know all your cameras

Welcome to Episode 6 of the Travel & Adventure Photography School podcast!
Today we are talking about what we can learn from studying master painters. This is part 1 of a 3 part series happening over the next three weeks. Today, we talk about master painters, next week we are talking about the original masters of photography, and then we will talk about what we can learn from a few of the master’s of the craft today, specifically in the outdoor adventure realm (like Jimmy Chin, Chris Burkard, and Paul Zizka).

This three-part series is about learning one of the fundamentals of photography. Not your settings, ISO, and Shutter Speed, but a way to build your photographic eye, which will enable you to take so many more amazing image

We will be talking about four things you can learn by studying great paintings and painters

• Lighting
• Posing
• Colour
• Composition

Lighting

• The way painters incorporate light into their scenes can tell us a lot about how we should be using light in photography
• Rembrandt Lighting
• Check out the catchlights
• Even the lighting in master landscape painters (like Lawren Harris of the group of 7) can show us a lot about how light and shadows should play on landscapes

Posing

• Many of the classic portraiture poses have come from painters
• Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. A classic pose that we see consistently in portraiture today
• These posing tips can be used to inform how you should get somebody to pose in your outdoor and travel images. Look at how the painters utilize negative space, arm/hand placements, etc...

Colour

• Colour is one of the most important things in a photograph.
• Painters are all about blending and balancing colours. A lot of the master painters are masters of colour theory as well.
• Look at these paintings with an eye towards how they utilize colour to draw you through the image, highlight certain elements, play down other elements, and to create a cohesive look. 
• We can learn a lot about how they balance varying colours in their scenes to help us create more interesting and gratifying images. 

Composition

• Every element of a painting is chosen to be there.
• We can do the exact same thing in any set of scenes we create. You get to choose what is in that scene. 
• Look for composition elements like framing, rule of thirds, the golden ratio, and more in the paintings to understand their composition
• Look for extraneous elements that may be distracting and remove them. The same thing can be done in landscape and travel photography. What elements are crucial to your storytelling?

All told, these master painters have informed the standards of visual arts of hundreds of years. What they did in the centuries past, still work today to help create classic, timeless images. 

Best way to learn about light is by studying the Masters:

• Rembrandt (there is a lighting style named after him)
• Vermeer (Girl with a Pearl Earring)
• Leonardo (Mona Lisa)
• Lawren Harris (Group of 7 painter)

This week we are talking about how to be a tourist wherever you are living and why it is so important to do this. We will give you five tips for ways to explore like a tourist in your own home. We really focus on the fact that you don’t need to get on a plane to love where you are at.

We also talk about YYC Hot Chocolate Fest, which just ended! Such an awesome month!

The Tips:

1. Go out and take in the big tourist sites
   • Whatever they are in your town, go and see them, photograph them like you would if you were in a new destination and try to see them from a new perspective.
2. When you are getting ready to leave, don’t treat this like any other day heading out.
   • Don’t plan to run errands.
   • Don’t think about the things you should be doing.
   • Be present in the moment.
3. You will likely meet new people.
   • This is such a great byproduct of being a tourist in your own town. You will likely start having conversations with wonderful people from where you live. And who knows, these may turn into friendships or even business opportunities. 
4. You get to practice!
   • If you want to take your travel photos from wall art to snapshot, then you had better start practicing and there is no better way than to walk out your front door.
5. Don’t limit your photography because of what other people are saying.
   • Forget about those who try to bring you down and take your photos!

In Episode 4 we are talking about tips to take your travel photos from snapshots to wall art. We will present you with 13 tips to help improve your travel photography (or just your photography in general) regardless of the camera kit you use. 

Composition

1. The Rule of Thirds
   • Divide your frame into thirds both vertically and horizontally and place your subject in one of the cross-sections of those lines.
2. Leading Lines
   • Use lines within your frame to lead your viewer’s eyes to the main subject in your image.
3. Framing
   • Use buildings or other objects to frame your subject and draw your audience’s eye towards your main subject. Frames can also add an extra interesting foreground element.
4. Backgrounds
   • Look for simple backgrounds to put your subject against. Busy backgrounds can distract the viewer’s eye, but a simple background keeps the focus on your subject.

A New Perspective

1. Go Low. 
   • Get low to the ground to show objects bigger than the traditionally are and to create a new perspective on an area. 
2. Go High. 
   • Look for a way to, safely, get up above your subject. See if there is a hill or building that you can legally climb to look back down on a subject from. This can reveal patterns on the ground around your subject.
3. Search the Area.
   • Look around an area for unique perspectives that other people aren’t shooting.

Wide-angle or close up?

1. Wide-angle
   • Great for showing off scenes, whole buildings or cityscapes. Gives people a feeling of an area.
2. Close-up
   • Shows off the details of one part of a scene. You can isolate a specific item like an animal’s face or a statue on a building. 

Get the Light

1. Golden Hour. 
   • Roughly one hour before sunset or one hour after sunrise. There is typically lots of soft light and long, gentle shadows that lead to beautiful images. This is also when the sky lights up into beautiful colours (if there are clouds for the sunlight to reflect off of).
2. Blue Hour 
   • Roughly an hour after sunset and an hour before sunrise. It’s when the sun is still illuminating the sky but it is below the horizon.
3. My Favourite App for Finding Light
   • Sun Surveyor. Tells you the time of sunset, sunrise, moonrise and moonset as well as the approximate length of golden hour and blue hour.

Isolate your Subject

1. Depth of field:
   • For close-ups, set your aperture to a low f-stop value (such as 2.8, 2.0, or 1.8 or lower). This blurs out the background behind your subject.
2. Use Colour
   • Place your subject against a contrasting colour to have them pop out. Think of it this way, a person wearing a green coat standing in amongst green trees is going to blend into the trees. But a person wearing a bright yellow or orange coat is going to pop out from amongst the trees, drawing your viewer’s eye to them. 
3. Background
   • Simple backgrounds really help

Welcome to part 2 of our Canadian Winter Photography Special! Last week we covered everything you need to be ready to go shooting outdoors in cold, Canadian winter. This week, in part 2, we are talking about actually getting out there and taking photographs! This is your chance to go out and take photos that other people are avoiding because of the weather. 

In this episode we cover:

1. Things to be aware of when taking photos outside in the winter:
   • Your camera’s internal meter can be tricked by sunlight reflecting off the snowy ground. Compensate by using full manual and setting everything yourself or, when using auto modes, use your exposure controls.
   • Autofocus can be tricked by falling and blowing snow, causing your camera to focus hunt or miss-focus. Switch into manual focus to compensate. 
   • You can freeze your nose (or other boy parts) to your camera if you aren’t careful.
2. Some awesome photos you can take:
   • The boiling water trick to create an ice-crystal fog around you.
   • Creating frozen, crystalline soap bubbles.
   • Using falling snow to create dynamic foregrounds and backgrounds as well as framing your subject.
   • Interacting with winter’s elements to create an engaging image.
   • Incorporate strong light effects and ice to create dynamic night-time portraits.
   • Getting protection from the elements to make your photos better.
3. Safety
   • Snow can cover up crevasses and holes, be careful where you step.
   • Watch out for cornices, snow-ledges that develop on ridge-lines. 
   • Learn about avalanches and how to avoid them.
4. Coming home
   • Protecting your equipment so it doesn’t develop moisture inside, using large plastic bags or your backpack.

Winter is one of my favourite times to take photographs. The world looks magical all covered in snow, and there are some amazing things you can only photograph when it gets freezing cold. We understand that lots of people dislike being out when the snow is flying, but given the right preparation you can have a great time taking photographs in the cold and you can create some unique images.

So join us for this special two-part series that is all about Winter Photography. In part 1, we cover things that you need to have and think about before heading out to shoot in the snow. We cover the gear you should have with you, the clothing you should wear, and the type of carry system that works in winter.

    • Think Gortex or something similar
    • This goes over your mid-layer
  • Super warm outer shell to put on when you stop for a while
    • Big puffy down coats work great for their warmth to weight ratio
• Think of where you pack your electronics, as batteries die far faster in the cold
