In this season finale, Richie and I discuss the healing power of art and how creativity has helped us both process emotions, find mindfulness, and reconnect with our playful side. I share how painting helped me navigate grief and social anxiety in my twenties, while Richie talks about how he accidentally discovered the meditative benefits of photography and why, as humans, we need struggle and challenge in our lives.
Plus, I’ve got a special announcement about my upcoming course, Modern Mixed Media. We'll be taking a short break and will return later this year with new episodes—see you then!

This week, Richie and I dive deep into my mixed media layering process. From the initial burst of excitement, through the problem-solving middle, to knowing when to stop, we share tips and personal insights on every stage of a painting. We chat about why planning isn’t always the best approach, and the surprising value of keeping a bit of mess (or, should I say, mystery) in our work.
We also reflect on last week’s discussion about balancing art and admin, and I share a few ideas I'm taking on board.
Don’t forget to check out my free course, Abstract Pattern Play, available until October 3, and my 6-week Modern Mixed Media course, open for a limited time. I hope you enjoy this deep dive into the creative process and all its intricacies!

Ever feel like you're constantly shifting between being an artist and wearing all the other hats that come with life and work? In this episode, Richie and I dive deep into the challenge of balancing creative flow with the demands of admin, routines, and the complexities of daily transitions—from work to home, from creating to planning. We share how we've been navigating a particularly rough couple of weeks, and how that experience opened up a conversation that just needed to happen. If you've ever felt overwhelmed trying to juggle it all, this one's for you. This is a heartfelt and honest discussion on how we work through these moments, and hopefully some reassurance that you're not alone.

Not all decisions can be made with logic or business in mind. Today, Richie and I chat about the importance of "what the heck moments"—those times when we follow a creative instinct, even though it may not make sense on paper. We share examples from our own creative journey, discussing how embracing these impulses can bring deeper fulfillment, growth, and unexpected opportunities. From taking your own approach to social media, choosing promotional opportunities that align with your values, to self-publishing a book rather than going the traditional route, this episode is all about trusting your intuition and why it matters in your creative life.

In today's episode, Richie and I explore the evolution of my art sales strategy. I reflect on my early days exhibiting at cafes and art markets, where community connections and personal interactions were key (the butterfly approach). We then look at my more recent experience utilising online sales, e-course teaching, and art licensing (the hermit approach). We chat about the pros and cons of each method and consider whether there's a better option somewhere in between! Whether you're a social butterfly or prefer the solitude of the hermit life, this conversation offers plenty of food for thought for your art sales strategy.

Have you ever embarked on a creative project only to find yourself questioning your choices midway through? In this episode, I talk with Richie about my recent attempt at re-branding my website and social media. What started as a fun day of choosing new colours, fonts, and design elements quickly escalated into website chaos, leaving me questioning my artistic identity. It wasn't what I had hoped for, but I learned some valuable lessons about planning, staying true to yourself, processing feedback, and allocating time for creative projects rather than acting on a whim. While this episode focuses on branding, it's also about being mindful of what you take on and when. I hope it's encouraging and maybe provides a few laughs along the way. You've gotta love a "what-not-to-do" episode!

This week, I chatted with Richie about how I had a bit of a wobble. Maybe we'll call it mid-year panic. Suddenly, I could feel the year slipping away with goals unmet. Specifically, I've been feeling blocked when it comes to making online classes. How much prep does one need to do and is a rebrand of my website colours really what I should be doing right now? Yep, it's an honest one. But it's not all doom and gloom, as my procrastination led me to watch a YouTube video, which helped me figure out the real issue at hand. Tune in to find out how I turned my mid-year panic into some mid-year progress. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed or just need a bit of motivation to stay on track, this episode is for you!

The ebb and flow of creativity is inevitable. There will be times when we are itching to paint and know exactly what we want to do, and there will be times when turning up feels hard. In this episode, I answer your questions on this topic and share the ways I stay inspired, build compassion for quieter periods, honour my own rhythms, and continue seeking self-discovery and self-expression, even in small acts. From finding colour palettes to compiling sketchbook prompts, tidying up the studio, and more, there are myriad ways to respect and support our creativity, no matter the season.
Richie and I hope you enjoy this short and sweet season finale. We'll be taking a little break and returning in late July with a new season filled with fresh insights and inspiration.

Recently, I made a delightful discovery: artists are still blogging! I am not sure why I thought the blogging scene was all but forgotten, but it's not. It's a little different now, especially with so many social media platforms to contend with. However, many artists are still blogging in various ways—on their own websites, on Substack, via email newsletters, and more. In this episode, I share my own experience and discuss things to consider when choosing your approach, from SEO to community building, personal satisfaction, and fitting it all in. If you have a blog or are thinking of starting one, this episode is a must!

There is a lot of pressure on artists to develop one strong style, but is this the only way? But now, is it still considered the best social media platform for artists? Figuring out which place to share your creations and content with the world can be challenging. So in today’s episode, we are going to compare a handful of the options that are available.

Shifting the focus of my health journey from losing weight to relieving stress has had some surprising benefits.
This isn’t really an art-based episode and I actually stressed a bit about that (oops, still learning). I know that art and life are linked but sometimes I still feel the pressure to stay in a particular lane.
Having said that, one thing I know is that being an artist, business owner and spending a lot of time online increases your health risks. So with that said, I’m going to keep having these conversations and this one is particularly juicy and packed with book, podcast and video recommendations! I hope you enjoy it!

This week, Richie and I reflect back on the ‘Redefining Success Series’ and share what we have learned.
You’ll hear how Richie is incorporating an idea from each interview into his daily routine.
Meanwhile, I talk about creating simple self-care habits, shifting my mindset in relation to marketing and feeling ready to try something new in my art.
We hope you enjoy the recap and that you enjoyed the season! Richie and I will be taking a short break and returning on October 20 which is actually three weeks time, not two weeks as I mentioned in the episode.
Until then, stay well and creative!

This week is the last interview in the 'Redefining Success Series' and I am chatting with UK artist Angela Terris!
Angela shares the story of how she moved away from digital art and embraced her childhood dream of becoming a fine artist. The conversation includes wonderful tips for loosening up, making art regularly and finding your own style.
We also chat about the discipline it takes to run your own art business and why it is so important to consider if it is really what you want.
Angela tells it exactly as it is and combines humour with practical advice. There are plenty of laughs and the word crikey seems to come up a lot!
It’s the perfect end to what has been an amazing season of interviews. Next week Richie and I will be back together to recap the episodes and share what we have learned.

Creativity requires risk. It’s a given. There are times when things are going to feel scary. But on the other side of scary, you’ll find GROWTH and CONFIDENCE.
My guest today is UK artist, Emmeline Webb. These days, Emmeline works full-time in her studio making vibrant mixed media artworks while her daughter, Maisie, runs her art gallery in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
Getting to this point has been quite a journey. A journey that has involved selling the family home, starting a gallery just as the UK was coming out of a recession and completely revamping that gallery during the pandemic.
I hope that you enjoy this week’s conversation and that it encourages you to do something that scares you.

Stefanie Stark didn’t start creating until later in life, after years and years of wanting to paint. Once she started there was no turning back. It wasn’t long before Stefanie was exhibiting her work in shows, galleries and art fairs across the US and even internationally.
In this episode, Stefanie talks about dealing with art rejection, making bad paintings and letting go of the pressure to stick with one style.
This includes a really interesting segment around taking online classes and how sometimes it can be challenging to process what you have learned and put your own stamp on it.
There’s also great information about working with galleries.

We spend so much of our lives trying to fit in and make others happy. Often it can leave very little energy or space for our own art. The art that we truly want to make.
In this week’s podcast, my guest, Simone Linehan, talks about letting go of people-pleasing and embracing her love of quirky faces even though they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.
We also talk about Sim’s long and wonderful career. From working in graphic design for thirty years to the soulful art classes she now runs for women in her backyard studio.
I’ve known Sim and admired her work and generous spirit for many years. We both live in the Adelaide hills so it was extra special to catch up and have a good chinwag!

When Kiala Givehand launched her first online poetry course, one student signed up. While it wasn’t the result she was hoping for, the relationship she built with that student shaped what was to come.
Since then, Kiala has created over 100 courses and helped women all over the world to find what makes them happy.
Her work is the culmination of many passions including poetry, book-binding, teaching and intuitive painting.
In this episode, Kiala talks about spirituality, being multi-passionate and the importance of nurturing the relationships you already have.
Kiala’s story shows that it is possible to build a creative business that also feeds your soul. I hope you enjoy the conversation!

My guest today is Swedish mixed media artist, Jenny Grant. When I reflected back on this conversation, there was one beautiful overarching theme. I can sum it up in one word - FEELINGS!
Jenny talks about getting quiet and listening to your inner voice, taking risks and embracing the ugly phase of making art.
We also chat about mountain bike riding, Swedish houses, and Lagom which means not too much and not too little.
This is a humorous, honest and joyful conversation about creativity. I truly didn’t want it to end, which is why it’s a long one. So settle in, make yourself comfy and enjoy!

Leana Fischer discovered her love of painting in 2013 when she left her job as an architect and moved from Virginia to Arkansas. While Leana was in-between jobs she had a bit of time or as Leana calls it ‘white space’. She broke out her watercolour paints and quickly realised that this was what she really wanted to do.
In 2014 she opened her online shop (May We Fly). Little by little, one painting at a time, it slowly became her full-time career.
In this episode, Leana talks about building skills through rigorous practice, creating breakthrough products, setting up multiple income streams and building a small and faithful audience.
If you are thinking about starting an art business or you are in the early stages of your career, this is such a helpful conversation!

This week, the ‘Redefining Success Series’ continues. My Guest is Helen Hallows, a mixed media artist based in the UK.
Helen has a deep love of nature and it shows in the way that she uses paint, collage and stitch to capture the essence and mood of a place.
In this episode, Helen talks about building creative confidence, using sketchbooks as 'process' books and becoming a more business-minded artist.
There are many threads and themes in this conversation, but one thing that stands out is the importance of valuing yourself, not just your work but also your wisdom and well-being.

I’ve been itching to share this conversation! Today is the first interview in the ‘Redefining Success Series’ and I am chatting with Atlanta-based artist, Christina Kwan.
Christina is well known for her abstract and floral works on paper as well as her large-scale murals. She has recently reached the point where art is her main career.
In the episode, she talks about the winding road to becoming an artist, wanting to give up many times and how her view of success has changed since becoming a mother.
This is a conversation about losing and finding yourself again and again. It’s about acceptance and letting go or as Christina’s says in the interview, it’s about something and nothing. You’ll have to tune in to find out more!

Running a creative business is a lot like painting, sometimes you have to take things too far to know your limits. This week, Richie and I chat about this and why our 3-week break turned into 3 months. You'll hear our perspectives on burnout as well as the flipside - What happens when you slow down too much and become isolated and disengaged?
We also talk about changes in the art community including the push towards more video content and the pros and cons of raw vs polished video production.
Plus, we try not to gush or say too much about our upcoming artist interviews! This season we are focusing on artists that have a smaller social media following but are achieving success in different ways. We've called it the 'Redefining Success Series' and we can't wait to share it with you. The first interview will be out next week.

In this week’s episode, I am sharing a few posts and podcast episodes from other artists that have helped me to get back on track after a bit of a slump in my creative practice. They say a problem shared is a problem halved and I certainly have to agree with that. I’ve been taking a lot of comfort from other artists in the community and I wanted to share some of that comfort and support with you.
Richie and I also reflect on this season of the podcast and talk about the positives that have come out of 2021 along with our plans for the future.
We hope you enjoy the episode. This is the last episode of the season. We will be back in early May!

I'll just make a quick video for Instagram. It'll be easy. 5 hours later and with much cursing, I had nothing. Well actually, I did have some footage of the back of my head and some interesting shadows!
If this sounds all too familiar, stay tuned! This week, Richie is taking over the mic and sharing his skills and knowledge as a videographer. Don’t worry though, it’s not super techy!
This is the Keep it Simple approach to making a time-lapse video. Richie takes you through every step including setting up your equipment, finding good light, taking high-quality footage and even how to edit the video once you are done.
Speaking of video, Richie has also created a little video to accompany this podcast so you can really see what is going on. The video is linked in the show notes.

Sometimes the administration side of being an artist takes over to the point where you don’t feel like much of an artist at all! Too many hours behind the computer screen can leave you feeling tired, exhausted and full of self-doubt.
When this happens something has to give! This week we chat about making painting a priority again. You’ll hear about the new collection I am working on, why I am laying low on social media and what happened when I took a break from my beloved online planner, Trello!
We hope you enjoy the episode. Richie and I certainly had a good laugh about my amazing ability to overcomplicate things!
If you also struggle with this balancing act and put way to much pressure on yourself, please know that you are not alone. Keeping things in balance is almost impossible but sometimes you do need to take a stand, rejig your schedule and claim those painting hours back!

Why are some artists so popular? And what about those artists that work really hard doing all the things (posting on social media, sending out newsletters, creating tutorials, exhibiting in galleries …) but barely see any growth in their audience year after year?
That’s what we are chatting about this week. To help us answer this question, Richie and I took a look at who we follow on Instagram and why. What we noticed was that there are many different ways to stand out.
From gimmicks to awe-inspiring talent, join us as we chat about what can make a difference when you are trying to be seen in a very crowded space.
We also talk about how much time it can take to get attention and whether it is even worth it? Plus we hatch a plan to interview artists that are achieving success with smaller audiences and with less focus on social media. Stay tuned for that!
We hope you enjoy the episode and it provides some food for thought on this tricky and often frustrating topic!

How many cameras do you set up? What type of light do you use for taking photos? How do you cope with Laura? Love that last question!! Just a few of the themes that Richie is diving into this week in his first solo episode.
For those of you that don’t know, Richie is my husband and for the past few years, he has been working full-time behind the scenes in the Laura Horn Art business. He also co-hosts this podcast with me but this week he’s running the show!
If you have ever wondered who is that Irish guy? This is the episode for you!
You’ll get to know Richie really well as he chats about his background, personal creative projects and what it is like to work in the LHA Biz. Plus there are plenty of photography and videography tips!
This is a warm, encouraging and honest conversation and at the end of it, I couldn’t help but think - Richie should have his own podcast!! It’s so good. I don’t think Richie would have done this episode even a few months ago but all your lovely messages have spurred him on to speak up and share all that he has to offer and my goodness he has a lot to offer!
It makes me so happy to be able to share this episode with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! And yes Richie is a big softy!!

How important is it to be efficient as an artist? That’s the question I posted on Instagram yesterday and today we are unpacking your answers. There’s so much to talk about!
Does efficiency take away from the magic of the process? Is it different for working artists vs. non-working artists? Can taking a break be the most efficient thing you do?
Plus there were so many wonderful tips left on the IG post. Things like: using a stay wet palette, listening to helpful podcasts while painting, putting up a do not disturb sign when working, turning off wi-fi, having your artist bio and portfolio images ready to send when requested and much more!
One thing that did become clear is that there are many different ways to be efficient as an artist and the choices you make will be influenced by your goals and overall vision.
We hope you enjoy the conversation and if you haven’t checked out the Instagram post, you can do so here. Thank you everyone for your wonderful contributions and for helping me to create this podcast! After-all, sometimes being efficient means asking for help!!

With a bit of creative thinking, even the smallest space can give birth to all kinds of art! Over the years I’ve made art in various corners and spots around the home. Personally, I thought that the kitchen table was very practical. Turns out Richie wasn’t as keen!
Since then I have worked in a converted garage, offsite studio and most recently a loft area in our new home.
As we talk about this journey, I share some of my favourite tips and ideas for getting organised including some handy storage solutions.
If you want a visual, make sure you watch our studio vlog. Yep, we finally released a new vlog episode and it’s all about my new studio space.
We also chat about the rollercoaster that is creative life and what happens when we both get the blues at the same time! Plus there’s the usual dose of laughter and healthy banter to keep you company as you make art, fold laundry and do all the other little things that life throws at you.
The last thing I wanted to mention, is that our 6-week ecourse, Modern Mixed Media, is now open for registration but not for long. We are limiting spaces this time and have already reached the half-way mark! If you want to join us, click here and use the coupon MMM21 to save 20% at checkout.

In today's podcast, we chat about what it's been like to create our first art challenge and share a few tips and insights from behind the scenes. It hasn't exactly been plain sailing but creative life rarely is. My goodness though, it feels good to push through and be at the stage where we can say that the challenge is live.
So what does it take to run an art challenge? How do you choose a theme? Where is the best place to host it? How long should it be and how do you get the word out? Just a few of the questions we’ll be answering as we chat about our experience so far.
And if you want to check out our challenge, it is called the Creative Elements Challenge and it’s running from the 10-14 February. It’s a five-part free video series and you can access here. The videos will be available to view until 2 March 2021.

This week on the podcast we are continuing our conversation about sketchbooks! I want to say a big thank you to everyone as we had a huge response to the first part of this sketchbook series. In the first part, we chatted about the mindset side of things and today we are diving into the practical stuff. ⠀
We cover how to choose a sketchbook and talk about common challenges including pages smearing, bleeding, tearing and sticking together.
We also chat about our children starting at their new schools, the value of taking a day off to reset and our gratitude for this podcast and the community that has grown from it.
After we recorded this conversation, I kept thinking about things that I left out! We might need another sketchbook conversation! At least I am learning how to say the phrase without mixing up my words. If you don’t know what I mean - take a listen to the end of last week’s episode where Richie snuck in a funny blooper!
I hope you enjoy today’s instalment and don’t forget to sign up here if you want to get involved with the FREE Creative Elements Challenge. The first of 5 videos will be released on the 10 Feb!

What if my best work gets stuck here? What if I mess up a spread and ruin the whole journal? Why can’t I stick with a theme? It’s taken me eight years to move past these fears and cultivate a sketchbook practice that not only makes me happy but is also beneficial for my art.
This is such a big topic that Richie and I have decided to devote two episodes to it. In today’s episode, I am talking about how I overcame my sketchbook anxiety and next week we’ll dive into the practical stuff including supplies and how to deal with warping, pages sticking together and other sketchbook challenges.

With the end of the year fast approaching, this week I felt the urge to talk about planning! And in particular, how I use Trello to get organised and stay focused throughout the year. Trello is a tool that I often get asked questions about so if you are curious about what it is and how you could make use of it in 2021, stay tuned.
For anyone that doesn’t know what Trello is, it’s an online organisational tool that you can download for free here. While I do my best to explain it in this podcast episode, I’ve also, with Richie’s help, created a free video so you can get a visual and see how I have my Trello set up.
In this episode, Richie and I also talk about our general approach to planning. This includes the changes we have made as our art business has grown, getting to grips with numbers and building flexibility and freedom into our schedules.
Whether you use Trello or another planning method, this episode is packed with tips and ideas to help you get excited and ready for the year ahead.
So grab a cup of tea and make yourself comfortable. It’s time to do some planning!

When it comes to the tech side of being an artist, there’s a lot to get your head around - website design, social media, video editing, email marketing … The list goes on! If you struggle with this or just need a bit of encouragement, you will love today’s guest. I am chatting with mixed media artist, Roben-Marie Smith.
In this episode, Roben-Marie shares her story from the early days of recording online classes with a camcorder right through to the tech-based membership site she runs today.
What I love about Roben-Marie’s approach is that she understands that artists would rather be making art than spending hours behind a screen. Her suggestions are practical, affordable and user friendly.
And when it comes to art, Roben-Marie has a similar mindset using accessible supplies and loose intentions to maintain a consistent art practice.

Do you prefer to paint in a series or on one piece at a time? As many of you know, I sit in the more is merrier camp and love working on multiples. This week Richie and I chat about why I prefer this approach and how I go about it? What becomes clear, is that it isn’t exactly a step by step process - it’s much more higgledy-piggledy that that. Some collections are more accidental than you might think. And when it comes to naming a series, I could be a bit more original!
We also chat about my love of writing notes and lists which leads to a possible new name for the podcast (well not really). Plus we talk about the power of rituals and our tendency to panic whenever we are creatively blocked.
It’s another big episode. Oh and for anyone following along with our house move - there’s an update on that too!

Carrie Schmitt is back on the podcast and this time we are chatting about what it is like to write an art book.
I’ve always wanted to write a book but it always ends up in the too-hard basket! The process seems daunting and I worry about how I would fit it in with all the other aspects of running an art business.
It was wonderful to chat with Carrie about this as Carrie is a full-time artist, instructor and author. She sells original paintings, teaches online and in-person workshops, licenses her art with various companies and always has a few books on the go.
Her latest book, The Story of Every Flower, is a celebration of her 10-year journey as an artist.
In our conversation, Carrie takes us behind the scenes. You’ll hear about what inspired the book, the rituals and routines that have helped Carrie to create it, why she chose to self-publish and how she is approaching the marketing and distribution of the book.
If you have ever thought about writing a book, I encourage you to take a listen!

We’re back! Over the past 6 weeks, we’ve been busy getting our house ready for sale and preparing to move. It’s been a crazy time full of mixed emotions. One thing that Richie and I didn’t realise, was just how much stress we’ve been holding on to.
In this episode, Richie shares his fears of not being able to sell our home after being burned before in the global financial crisis. Meanwhile, I talk about pulling back from social media, getting off the content creation hamster wheel and finding comfort in my sketchbooks.
We hope you enjoy the conversation!

Why is it so hard to take a break? For the past few weeks, Richie and I have been debating the idea of taking a break from the podcast. It’s brought up a lot of fear in both of us.
Will it be detrimental to our business? Are we letting down our listeners? What happened to being consistent?
It took a bit of time but eventually, we let go of our fears and focused in on the positives. More energy! New ideas! Fresh enthusiasm! With that in mind, we agreed to take September off to relax and go slow. The thing is I am not all that good at relaxing. Richie - yes. Me, not so much.
With a bit of free time on my hands, I decided to go look at some houses. You can guess what happened next. Yep, offer in and accepted! We are moving house and now more than ever we need to take that break!! So with that in mind, we are doing it. This will be our last episode until the 7 October 2020.
We hope you enjoy it and that it encourages you to let go of the shoulds and take those breaks when you need them!

It’s taken over 100 episodes but I’ve finally convinced Richie to sit down and tell his side of the story. If you are new around here - Richie is my husband and the co-host of this podcast. He is also an incredible boxing coach and photographer/videographer.
In this conversation, Richie talks about how he got started with photography, dealing with imposter syndrome and what it’s been like to join the Laura Horn Art Business. This includes a very honest discussion about how Richie has changed his approach to masculinity and become more involved in our family life.
One thing that comes through in this episode is how dedicated Richie is to encouraging others to pursue their passions. Whether he is coaching elite fighters or helping me out of a painting funk, Richie is the ultimate creative encourager!!

In today’s podcast, I’m chatting with Richie about my favourite art techniques and how refocusing on the process can kickstart your creativity.
This leads to some interesting lines of thought. Is leaf stamping sophisticated? Do I need a social media break? Should I have gone down that YouTube rabbit hole?
You’ll have to tune in to find out more. What I can say is that it is a relaxed and fun conversation about returning to creativity after a break and getting back to what you truly love.

This week we have a special episode. We are going back and revisiting the very first artist interviews that I ever did. So that means you’ll be hearing from Andrea Soos, Ange Miller and Wendy Solganik.
What Richie and I decided to do was to take a listen to these episodes and find our favourite parts which was actually incredibly hard because there are so many good bits! But we have chosen a few snippets and we are sharing them in the one episode today. We hope that they will inspire you and encourage you to listen or re-listen to the episodes to hear more.

It’s easy to get caught up chasing quick wins and instant gratification but what if you slowed down and took purposeful action towards your long term plans? Where would you be in one year, two years or five years? What projects could you bring to fruition? A book, an exhibition, a podcast, an online course, a creative network …
There are so many possibilities but every single one requires consistent action over a long period of time. This week we chat about our own experiences with playing the long game including how we stay motivated and on task. We also chat about the harder parts and why sometimes you just have to bake cookies! We hope you enjoy the episode and it encourages you to stay the path and keep working towards your creative goals!

This one is a bit special. Our 100th podcast episode! To honour the occasion we are chatting about the ins and outs of running a podcast! If you are curious about what goes on behind the scenes you will love this episode plus there’s plenty of healthy banter and laughs along the way. One thing we have learned is to not take ourselves too seriously.
A few things we talk about in this episode are: who does what, whether we ever argue, how much time it takes us each week and what our hopes are for the podcast’s future. We also have some tips for anyone thinking about starting a podcast.
Finally, a big thank to our listeners for all your support and encouragement for the first 100 episodes! Here’s to 100 more!

Sometimes being an artist is hard. This week, in my first solo episode, I talk about the ups and downs of creative life and share a message of support to artists that are feeling discouraged or weary.
It’s a short episode but it’s enough. In many ways, this sentiment sums up what this episode is all about. Being gentler with yourself, letting go of the endless quest for more and trusting in your own creative path. I hope you find comfort and encouragement in the episode.

Who doesn’t like chatting about art supplies? Okay, maybe it isn’t Richie’s favourite thing but it is mine. I absolutely love hearing about what artists use right down to the little details - the size of their brushes, preferred substrates, go-to colours, homemade tools - I want to know it all! Are you with me on this? I hope so, as this week I am running through my mixed media artist toolkit.
We did an episode like this a while ago but it felt like it was time for an update! So join us as I chat about my latest loves. From the paints that make me swoon right through to the supplies that make Richie sparkle. Haha, all will be explained in the episode!
I also answer a few commonly asked questions including what tape I use on my watercolour paintings and how I get those pesky paint pens to work!
I hope you enjoy the conversation (hopefully more than Richie did) and if you check out the Supply List for my latest online class, Modern Mixed Media you can all the details on the items mentioned in this episode.

My guest today is mixed media artist, Phoebe Gander. Phoebe paints semi-abstract landscapes and seascapes that are rich with layers and textural details. Originally from England, Phoebe now lives in New Zealand with her husband and three children.
This is a very raw and tender conversation.
Phoebe talks about how coming back to art after a long break helped her to overcome severe anxiety, cope with her son’s extra needs (he has ADHD) and find purpose beyond motherhood.
We also chat about how Phoebe’s art has changed and what it has been like to move away from resin and alcohol inks and return to her love of mixed media landscapes.
I want to say a big thank you to Phoebe for being vulnerable in this episode and for encouraging all of us to embrace our differences.

Richie also shares the checklist he uses to make sure that his cameras and microphones are set up and everything runs smoothly.

This week we are talking about failure. Something Richie and I have become very familiar with! It’s easy to look at a person’s Instagram feed or website and feel like they have it all figured out but there’s a lot you don’t see.
Over the years we have messed so many things up and questioned whether we are cut out for creative biz at all.
If you feel like you are fumbling at the moment, we want you to know that you are not alone. We also want you to know that there is magic in those failures even if it is hard to see that right now.
So with that said, join us as we share the failures we have had so far in our art business. From Richie’s reluctance to spend money on podcasting equipment right through to Laura’s questionable skills at packing a car for an art market - this conversation spans all sorts. There are failures in podcasting, filming, printing, painting, framing, accounting and more!
We hope that you find it encouraging and relatable. There’s a lot of laughs in this one! I don’t know how many times I’ve said to Richie in the midst of a failure ‘If I don’t laugh, I’ll cry’. Never thought that would be one of my art biz mantras but it seems to help!

What was it like to create your first online course? How did you heal after a period of burnout? How important is it for artists to have multiple income streams?
Just a few of the questions that come up in this week’s Q&A style podcast episode with Susan Nethercote!
Suse was a guest on my podcast last year but wow, a lot has happened since then. It felt so good to be able to catch up again and talk about how things have changed. From navigating a global health crisis to making online courses and muddling our way through motherhood - it’s a juicy one. In fact, it’s so juicy we have broken the conversation into two parts!

It’s wonderful to have the benefit of hindsight! In this episode, Richie and I take a trip down memory lane and talk about what we would do if we were starting an art business now!
From developing a cohesive body of work right through to email lists and Instagram strategies - this is a big one!
We’ve chatted about many of these topics individually on the podcast before but today we’re bringing them together into a road-map of sorts. A step-by-step walk-through of the key areas that we believe are important when building an art business.

Is it better to have a studio at home or a studio offsite? A question that comes up again and again in the art community.
I’ve always been in the home studio camp but that all changed 3 months ago! With the business growing and it becoming harder and harder to maintain boundaries between work and home, Richie and I took the plunge and leased a creative space together.
Join us as we chat about how it happened, what we were looking for in a studio space and the pros and cons based on our experience so far.
While it is pretty obvious that we are both ecstatic about this new development, we do want to say that for every artist it is different. What works for us might not work for you. The most important thing is that YOU are happy in the place that YOU create. That is truly all that matters!

Richie and I also have a good laugh about the paintings that I have in the studio that are facing towards the wall. In other words, the ones that I don’t want to look at anymore! I wonder if anyone else relates to that?

Sonal Nathwani has always loved sketchbooks. When she was a little girl she filled them with fashion designs, today they are often brimming with flowers. Throughout her life, they have been her safe place.
Born in Africa to Indian parents, Sonal grew up in England, spent time studying art in Italy and now lives in Austria. While she has always loved art, when it came to a career choice she took the sensible option and became an accountant.
She never fully let go of her art dream though and after her youngest son was born, she made the decision to leave her career in finance and pursue her passion for painting.
In this conversation, Sonal talks about the importance of drawing, how she approaches her sketchbooks and the beautiful pressure of Instagram.

If you often make the excuse that you don’t have enough time to make art, you are going to love this episode. I say that because my guest today, Inga Buive, has mastered the art of painting while her son naps!
Originally from Lithuania, Inga moved to the UK with her husband five years ago. With a background in graphic design, she found work in an e-learning company and still works in this same company full-time. Two years ago Inga had a baby boy and it was while on maternity leave that she finally had the courage to start painting and sharing her work online.
In this conversation, Inga talks about making art in short bursts, letting go of the pressure to find your style and the ins and outs of her favourite watercolour supplies.

I talk about the projects that are keeping my mind off things and Richie shares his thoughts on having a purpose each day. We also ponder the positives that could come out of a situation like this including more online innovation for artists and small businesses.

When artist, Ivy Newport, shared her latest abstract creation on Instagram, I knew I had to have her on the podcast! I’ve been following Ivy’s work for a long time and have watched her online community grow and grow.
With thousands of students and a class platform with over 80 classes, it’s fair to say I had some questions!
Things like: How do you approach making classes? What do you do to avoid burnout? Do you have any advice for artists that are just getting started?
Plus we also talk about studio spaces, working with your husband and our mutual love of colour palettes.

This week I am chatting about how I get started with a painting. It’s a fitting topic as I’ve just started a commission piece. The first commission in a long time.
My commission process in the early days was … well, let’s just say that it was less than ideal! So needless to say. I was feeling a bit nervous about diving back into custom work. But then I remembered all that I have learned. All the mistakes, sleepless nights, revelations, conversations. Every part of the journey that has brought me to where I am now.
I am not the same artist that I was years ago and neither are you! We are always evolving. So with new confidence, today I am sharing the steps I now take when I start a new painting or body of work.
Richie and I also talk about gathering inspiration from a variety of sources. Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to talk about how much I enjoyed the Taylor Swift, Miss Americana documentary!

Just a few of the things that have been going through my head this past week. I had another podcast episode planned for today but it didn’t feel right.
So instead, Richie and I are chatting about burnout and what it is is like when your body kicks in and tells you that you NEED to slow down.

Today I am joined by abstract artist, Betty Krause. Betty started painting when she turned 50 and has built up a thriving art business in a short space of time. How did she do it?
Well, it started with a very deliberate decision to put her mixed media art supplies away and focus on becoming an abstract artist.
In this episode, Betty talks about removing distractions, hanging in there as you find your art style and using platforms such as Instagram and YouTube to connect and grow your audience.
For anyone that has ever felt like it is too late to get started, I encourage you to take a listen to Betty’s inspirational story.

Do you set intentions for the year ahead? I love to take a bit of time to dream and visualise what I want for my creative life. Richie is more of a take each day as it comes type so this process is quite new for him!
In this episode, we talk about how we want to feel in 2020, what our word for the year is and how we are going to integrate it into our day-to -day life.
We also share our biggest stumbling blocks. From dealing with our ego to being too passive and waiting for things to happen.
It's a raw and honest conversation but there are also a lot of laughs along the way. We hope you enjoy it and that it encourages you to take some time to explore your own desires for 2020.

How good is it when your creativity flows? But why does it happen some days but not others?
Recently, I had the most amazing soul-satisfying burst of painting. Four days of creative bliss. Talk about a confidence boost! It was so good that I didn’t want it to pass by without taking a deeper look at what on earth happened!
Was it the new playlist I created? Or maybe it was because I was working a bit differently to how I usually do?
Join me as I break it down and share my experiences and tips for tapping into your Creative Mojo!

My guest today is Australian artist, Alexandra Plim. Alexandra paints energetic and intuitive abstract landscapes from her home studio in the inner west of Sydney.
She describes her creative journey as a ‘Very DIY Situation’. From having an open studio when she didn’t actually have a studio to setting up her website one-handed while breastfeeding - this is an inspirational story about letting go of perfection, embracing the mess and making things happen for yourself!

This week I have the most incredible guest. I am chatting with Carrie Schmitt!
Carrie paints gorgeous expressive floral paintings. If you haven't seen her work, be sure to check it out over on Instagram (@carrieschmitt).
Without saying too much (trust me it is better if you hear it from Carrie), this is a conversation about being brave enough to listen to your intuition even in the darkest of times. Carrie talks about how moments of struggle while hard are also ripe with inspiration, information and possibilities for change.
She also shares how tapping into positive memories from her past has helped her and provided inspiration for many creative projects.
There is so much wisdom in this conversation and one thing I particularly took away from it is the relationship that Carrie has with her creativity and the way that she treats it with nothing but respect, kindness and love.

I’ve got nothing! That’s how this week’s episode starts. A creative block leaves me wondering if I need to return to a more rigid schedule. Maybe I’ve slowed down too much?
This leads to an interesting chat with Richie about the pros and cons of scheduling creative work. I talk through my guilt over not working so much over the past few weeks and realise that maybe I have been confusing busyness with productivity all along!
With a few pertinent questions, Richie helps me to decide on a new approach that combines both structure and spontaneity.
If you want to take a peek at the tools and hear about the approach I use for scheduling my work, make sure you check out this week's vlog!

If you know that you want to make art but often find yourself making excuses, this is the episode for you. I am joined today by abstract artist, Pamela Bates.
Pamela worked in marketing and design for 22 years until a visit to the Gardner Art Museum in Boston changed the direction of her life. She realised that what she truly wanted to do was paint and since that moment she has been doing exactly that. Painting, exploring, healing, growing and embracing all aspects of living a creative life.
In this episode, Pamela shares her story. We also dig in deep with the mindset side of making art.

In this episode, Australian artist, Amica Whincop shares her story. This is an honest conversation about the harder side of being an artist. The struggle to find your authentic voice, the challenge of putting yourself out there and the stress of pushing so hard.

Procrastination almost got the better of me last week. My schedule was clear, we were all set to film an online class but suddenly I felt compelled to vacuum. I also decided that my hair wasn’t quite right and my accounting couldn’t possibly wait. When you choose accounting as an avoidance tactic something isn’t right. So what was really going on?
In this episode we take a good hard look at procrastination and self sabotage.
Why we do it, the role that our emotions play and how to turn things around. We share our personal experiences along with a few of our favourite resources on the topic.

My guest today, Kellee Wynne Conrad, took her time to develop her art because she wanted it to be a lifelong habit and process. A 100 day artwork challenge and a year-long passion project (Color Crush Creative) paved the way for the online art program she now runs, Experience True Colors.
In this episode we chat about her journey and how she juggles being an artist, mother of three and creative business owner.
What I learned from Kellee is that if you approach your work from an authentic place and concentrate on what you can control, the other things have a way of falling into place. Oh and this all works best if you start the day with coffee!

This past month has been one of the busiest Richie and I have had in a long time. We launched a new online class and pulled everything together for my SALA exhibition. All while juggling our kids being at home on school holidays! Makes me sweat just thinking about it. Phew, kind of glad it is a new month! A fresh start. Speaking of fresh starts, that’s what this podcast is all about.
After we hung the last piece for the exhibition, I knew that I needed to take a few days to piece my life back together. I don’t tend to do things by halves so I decided that a total life reset was required and that there would be three parts to this ART, LIFE and BUSINESS. This week Richie and I are celebrating a special milestone - one year of podcasting! We had grand plans for a fancy episode but when the time rolled around we were up to our eyeballs in exhibition prep!
If you’ve ever had an exhibition, you probably know what I am talking about. Frantically finishing things, painting edges, varnishing, trying to think of titles, printing labels and so on.
To be honest, we got so swept up in exhibition madness, this podcast almost didn’t happen at all! It was only at 9pm, the night before my SALA exhibition installation that we managed to turn the microphones on and have a conversation. Needless to say, we were a bit tired but what better time to talk about exhibitions than when you are right in the thick of it!
We hope that you enjoy the conversation and that it might just be the gentle nudge you need to fill out that exhibition application form!

Instagram. Just when I think I have you figured out, you go and change things up again. If you live in Australia, your probably know what I am alluding to! Last week, Instagram started hiding the number of likes on posts. I have to admit, it threw me a bit at first. On the one hand, I could see the argument for less comparison and pressure on the platform but I was also worried about the impact it would have on my art business.
With mixed feelings, I decided to find out how others were reacting to this change and posted a question about it on my Instagram Stories. I was inundated with answers. So many that I decided to make a podcast about it. So grab a cup of tea and let's dig into this week's question - Do Instagram Likes Really Matter?

As the days get colder here in Australia, all I want to do is snuggle up, read books and bake cakes. Not a bad thing, except ... I have an art business to run! I posted about it recently on Instagram and well, let's just say, I am not alone. So what do you do when your energy levels are low? How do you navigate the ebb and flow of creative life, get past slumps and make the most of the times when you are at your best?
This week we are sharing our favourite strategies. Things like setting a minimum time that you have to show up for, matching tasks to your mood, having a daily focus and learning how to say a 'nice no'. Richie also shares what he has been up to now that he's been let off the hook on the house cleaning side of things. And I am reminded yet again of the restorative benefits of getting away from the day-to-day and enjoying an artist date.

Episode 46 with Wendy Solganik - https://www.laurahornart.com/thepodcast/46
This week, I am excited to share with you that I have another artist guest. I am speaking with Wendy Solganik (also known as @willawatercolors over on Instagram). Wendy has a wealth of experience. She ran her own fine stationery and invitation design and printing business for many years and it was super successful, but she left it all behind to focus on her own art and on her family. Since then she has been taking my online classes and exploring a more abstract style of watercolour art. With the work starting to pile up, Wendy had a question for me. What should she do with all the art that she is making? We chat about various options including selling the work, giving it away and even putting it in the bin! I absolutely loved this conversation. Wendy shares so much wisdom and also asks me questions that I am sure many of you have wanted to ask. It’s a refreshing and fascinating conversation and one that really got me thinking. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! To follow Wendy’s arty adventures, head over to https://www.instagram.com/willawatercolors/
We know marketing is key to and yet it is so hard to find the time and energy to make it happen. Other things take priority and let's be honest, often we'd rather be making art than sitting in-front of a computer writing a newsletter or planning out a social media post.

Some might seem obvious but as a self-taught artist there’s a lot of bumbling through that happens and unknown gaps in knowledge! As a creative business owner, it’s ’s easy to fall into the trap of pushing hard all of the time. I don’t know how many times I say things like, ‘I’ll just do one more thing and then I’ll relax’. Of course that one thing turns into ten things and before I know it, hours have gone by and I I haven’t come up for air.
Sound familiar? This ‘one more thing’ mentality is dangerous especially in a business environment where there are so many things!
So how do you stay sane, fend off overwhelm and keep healthy?
Well it starts with being prepared to take your foot of the gas from time to time and slow down.
This week on the podcast we are sharing the strategies we are using to do exactly that. Things like having a dedicated mid week ‘day off’, stepping back from social media and hiring a house cleaner!
We hope you enjoy the podcast and it encourages you to place as much value on slowing down as speeding up!

Ooh, I have a special episode for you this week. I am talking with abstract artist, Andrea Soos!
Andrea lives in Victoria, British Columbia where she makes art nearly every day from her backyard studio. With vibrant colours and playful marks, it’s the type of work that makes you want to grab a paintbrush and start painting!
I had so many questions for Andrea, I'll admit it it was hard to contain myself. Questions like how did she develop her distinctive style? And what was it like to transition from teaching into making art full-time? Andrea is incredibly generous with her answers, sharing plenty of useful tips for artists hoping to take a similar path.
I especially love the advice Andrea gives for dealing with the harder parts of being an artist on social media. Hint, it will get you off Instagram and focused on making more art!
This is a big episode (my longest podcast yet) but honestly, once we started chatting we couldn’t stop! Andrea's story is refreshing, relatable and encouraging - definitely an episode not to be missed!

What’s harder, making art or marketing it? For many artists, it’s the latter.
Hands up if you have some artwork sitting around that could be listed for sale? If you answered yes, stay tuned. In today’s episode I’m sharing five specific strategies for selling art online.
Marketing doesn’t have to be icky, with the right strategy you can increase your sales while also cultivating your creative practice. Take a Flash Sale, for example, this type of sale can provide income during a slow period, reducing your stress so you can focus on a new project. Or how about a Painting a Day Sale? Perfect for generating excitement on your social media channels and fostering discipline in your work.
The key is to find the marketing strategy that works best for you. You don’t need to do all the things. In fact, my challenge for you, is to pick a strategy, open up your planner and make a commitment to trying one of these strategies. Just one for now. Do one and do it well!

Have you ever wondered what it is like to work with your partner? A year ago Richie and I pooled our talents in art and videography and started making online classes. We didn't know where it would go but we both knew in our hearts that if we didn't try we'd regret it. A year on and we're still here!
It wasn't always easy though. We dropped the ball and created many things that ended up on the scrapheap.
But something cool happened. The more mistakes we made, the better we got at picking ourselves up and using our failures to make even better work and to improve our relationship.
As Richie so eloquently puts it 'We've been in the muck together, come out the other side and we are still going strong'!
This week we are celebrating with a special podcast episode - the real deal on working together! Things like how it has affected our relationship, what the kids think about the business, who has the most annoying habits and what keeps us coming back for more!
We are also having a big sale on all of our online art classes! Use the coupon code ARTPARTY at checkout to save 30% on ALL classes. Coupon expires on Sunday, May 5th 2019, 12:00 am ACST (Australian Central Standard Time).
Thank you for all your encouragement, we wouldn't be here without you!
Have you ever wanted to paint a big canvas? Or maybe painting big is already your thing and you are hooked (I can definitely relate to that)!
If you answered yes, stay tuned. I've just got back from teaching my process for painting a large-scale abstract over in Bali (woo hoo, how exciting is that) and I also have a new online class called Layer by Layer!
With painting big fresh on my mind, you can probably guess what we are talking about this week!

This week we are continuing our conversation about fear. Last week we tackled creative fears and this time we are diving into the business side of things. Top of our list is the fear of not making enough money. Why is it so hard to talk about money? Or more to the point be honest about money and how important it is?
It was only recently that Richie confided in me that he was seriously worried that he might have to go back to a regular full-time job. That maybe we were kidding ourselves with this whole creative couple concept. As it turned out my husband’s fear was the wake up call we needed to tackle one of our other fears - the fear of not being productive enough. We had to really look at whether that fear has showed up to teach us a few lessons and well, you’ve probably guessed but it had!
Finally we chat about the fear of not being professional enough and Richie reminds me yet again that I can actually call myself a professional artist. Saying I am artist is hard enough but now he has me saying I am a professional artist!
We hope by sharing our experiences of fear you will feel more empowered to not only talk about fear but also take positive action and ultimately become less fearful about fear itself!

What is your biggest fear as an artist? Is it not making enough money or maybe you are worried that you will never create work that you are truly proud of. Recently, I asked this question over on Instagram and let's just say the fears came flying in! So this week and next week (yep we are doing another 2 part series), we thought we'd tackle a few of them head on.
In today's episode you will hear us talk about …
The fear of not being good enough (that all encompassing fear that we all have)
The fear of being thought of as a fraud due to no formal training
The fear of not being taken seriously as an artist by friends or family
Three big juicy fears that we've got a lot to say about. We'll be sharing our own experiences and the strategies that we use to keep going even when we feel scared and overwhelmed. We hope that at the end of this episode you feel encouraged, that you know that fear is normal and you also know that you get a say in how you respond to it!

Aside from making art, one of my favourite ways to while away a few hours is to work on my website. Yep I am a website geek. Give me all the colours, font combinations and cool little features. To be honest, I spend a bit too much time tweaking my website when I should be doing other things but this week I get to shamelessly talk websites!
Now I know there are artists that sell directly off Instagram or Etsy and that can work really well but I am a fan of having your own little bit of cyberspace. Since I got serious about my website, I have seen huge growth in my business. More art sales, more online class sign-ups, more workshop participants, more podcast downloads and so on.
The biggest change for me was when I started thinking of my website as the hub of the business, not just an add-on because I felt like I 'should' have a website.
Now while I could talk for hours about the visual and tech side of a website, this episode is more about getting to the core of your website's purpose. The part that so often gets overlooked! So grab a cup of tea and settle in, I'm sharing my top 7 tips for a website that works!

Branding! What's that got to do with being an artist? Well, in this day and age, it is often the difference between struggling or thriving as an artist. In other words, it's super important!
Successful artists have a strong sense of who they are and what they offer. This clarity and confidence is reflected in everything that they do. From how they put together an exhibition to the way they share their work online.
Building a brand is so much more than creating a logo, or setting up a website - your brand is the culmination of how people feel about you and what you bring to the world. It's emotional and powerful!
The more you understand your brand, the easier it is to connect with your ideal customers and ultimately grow your creative business. In fact, I would go as far as to say that investing time and energy into branding has been the single most important business decision that I have made in the past 12 months.
Yep, I am BIG on BRANDING and I think you should be too! In fact, in this episode I am sharing 7 questions to help you build your brand as an artist.
And to make it easier for you, I have created a free workbook with the questions and plenty of space for you to put your answers.
Today is Part 2 in our conversation about cultivating a healthy creative practice. Last week we talked about the work that goes on outside of the studio. This week we are diving into the juicy art-making side of things.
In this episode we chat about ...
Taking responsibility for your practice.
Establishing rituals for starting and finishing.
Using challenges and parameters to stretch your ideas further.
Scheduling and batching work to make the most of your time.
Using repetition to improve your skills.
Accepting and valuing ALL of your work.
We hope that you find the conversation interesting and that it gives you some ideas for your next studio session!!!

Podcast Episode 30 - Tips for Organising Your Studio
How do you cultivate a healthy creative practice? It's a big topic, so big that we are devoting two episodes to it!
In Part 1 we are chatting about the creative magic that happens outside the studio. The work that you do that often doesn't feel like work but plays an important role in developing your artistic style. Whether you are visiting an exhibition, taking a hike or even browsing through local shops, one of the great things about being an artist is that we get to call it 'research'. So grab a cup of tea and get inspired. By the end of this podcast we hope that you have several ideas for how to bring more research into your arts practice. Next week we will be continuing this conversation and looking at the work that happens in the studio - the juicy art-making side of things. Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss Part 2!
There are so many reasons to run an in-person workshop. It's a wonderful way to connect with other artists, build your confidence, generate income and promote your brand. So how do you go about it?
From finding a space, to what to bring and how to plan, this week I am sharing all my tips.
You will also hear the story of how I built my confidence in this area over the past ten years through little steps of bravery. My hope is that you will realise that you can do this too. It doesn't have to be big and scary. All you need to do is start small and start now!

I am having an a-ha week. You know, one of those weeks when life serves you up some valuable lessons and you surprise yourself by paying attention. A few things that I have realised are:
1) De-cluttering is immensely satisfying (thank you Marie Kondo)
2) Weekends deserve protection
3) The best social media strategy is the one that feels healthy
4) Sometimes you don't need to chase shiny new things
5) Teaching teaches the teacher
I also have not one but three podcast suggestions for your playlist. Art lovers can rejoice as the number and quality of art podcasts is on the rise!
There is no denying that this is a jam-packed podcast. In-fact it could have been several better-organised episodes but you know what it is? It's an honest conversation about creative life so I am going to let it be just that. Enjoy!

If you are anything like us you probably began the year with some big intentions. But what happens a month or two later? All too often, that feeling of excitement turns into overwhelm.
So what do you do? First of all, take a deep breath and clear your head. Then, when you are ready, it's time to get honest and take a good look at your creative business, art practice and personal life. If you don't know where to start, don't worry, we've got three questions to help you let go of what you can, park what you need and do what you love!
You have probably heard the phrase 'Done is Better than Perfect'. We use it all the time in our art business. It helps us to keep the momentum going and ultimately to get stuff done. But, and it is a big but. We also believe that putting in extra effort to make your work stand out from the crowd is super important.
So how do you know when to adopt done is better than perfect or when to go the extra mile? Tune in to find out how it goes down in our art business. From what tasks fit into each camp to who is the more annoying perfectionist, we really enjoyed this episode and hope you do too!

It's been a busy week at LHA headquarters. Our latest online class, Abstract Adventuring, went live and we released our first ever limited edition prints. With two launches in one week, it was pretty clear what this podcast was going to be about. We are talking about LAUNCHING!
I'll admit, over the past 12 months, we've really had to bring ourselves up to speed in this area. A launch isn't a step that you tag onto the end. It's a journey where you get to know your audience, build their trust and generate excitement about what it is you are creating. And when I say excitement, I mean full on happy dance (yay, it's launch day) excitement.
So how do you do that? Well, we have an idea or two and we are sharing them here in Episode 26!
Part way through last year, my relationship with Instagram lost it's spark. After posting almost daily for several years, Instagram fatigue started to set in. I kept posting but I didn't have the same energy for it as before. It wasn't an altogether bad thing. I overhauled my website and poured my heart into creating online classes. In fact, many wonderful things happened.
The problem was, when I wanted to rekindle my relationship with Instagram, it almost felt like the platform didn't love me back. My Instagram growth had come to a standstill.
While I wanted to blame Instagram, the truth was, I was behind with the times. Instagram had moved on and I hadn't kept up. Not one to give up, while I was on holidays last week (and not meant to be working) I attempted to woo the platform back. And while it is early days I am already seeing a change.
Want to know what I am focusing on? Join me this week as I share the 5 strategies I am using to grow my Instagram account in 2019.

Not going to lie, the last few weeks have been hectic. Juggling school holidays while getting a new online class ready for launch has left me and my hubby feeling a little frazzled and also guilty. So this week we are taking a week off, well kind of. Work seems to follow us everywhere we go, but once this podcast is out into the world, we will be enjoying some much needed down-time.
Lazy days to swim, walk and catch up on books and podcasts. On that note, join us this week as we share what we will be reading and listening to as we wind down on our Summer Holiday.

This episode we are sharing 10 organisational ideas that your future self will thank you for. You know the types of things - storing your photos, doing a stock-take of your art supplies, filing your receipts and so on. But what about scheduling your self-care and making clear work boundaries?
Richie puts me in the hot seat this week, shining the light on my unhealthy work habits and reminding me of just how stubborn I can be when I get fixated on something. While I wouldn't say I loved this conversation as it was happening, when I listened to it back, I knew I had to leave it in because while it is hard, we need to talk about this stuff.
Talk about this impossible desire to do all the things. After this podcast I felt liberated and I hope you do too. This isn't about having everything figured out, this is about making your life easier so you have more time to do what you love.

Last week we reflected on the year that was 2018. This week we are looking to the future. With our favourite planner The Maker's Yearbook by our side, we are dreaming up ideas and setting our intentions for 2019. From new online classes to international workshops, there's a lot to get excited about. A dream is nothing without a plan though. So join us in our quest to become better planners! We hope that you find it inspiring and that it encourages you to grab a pen and paper (or whatever works for you) and start doing some planning of your own.
Do you have an end of year planning ritual? A process for reflecting on the year that was and preparing for what lies ahead? Up until now, we haven't. To be honest there has been a bit too much winging it over the past 12 months for comfort. That's why when I heard about The Maker's Yearbook 2019 by Nicola Taylor, I ordered it immediately. I knew that we needed help to get on track for 2019. Since it arrived, I have been pestering my hubby to sit down for a planning sesh and this week we did!
One of the things that I love about The Maker's Yearbook is that before you start the planning part, you take a good look back at the past 12 months - the highs, the lows and the lessons learned along the way. We definitely dropped the ball in a few areas but there were also amazing improvements to our family life and the level of fulfillment we both feel about our work. Tune in to hear more from our first ever planning sesh together.

So how do you make money as an artist? These days there are so many options. Original work, prints, lifestyle products, workshops, retreats, online classes, ebooks ... Join us this week as we talk about what income streams we use now and which ones we've let go of and why. Profitability certainly plays a big part but there's more to this conversation! Tune in to hear our thoughts on the many ways to make a living as an artist.
Recently I left a bucket of brushes in dirty paint water on the kitchen counter for several days. Little did I know that my hubby was going out of his mind over this. Meanwhile, I happily got on with making more art with all the other supplies I have. As you can imagine, this made hubby even crazier! And so this week on the podcast he approached me about it and wanted to know just how many art supplies I have. Join us as we run through my perfectly reasonable list of mixed media must-haves! This podcast wasn't exactly planned so forgive me if I don't get the names for the things I mention 100% right. I have since gone back and put all the details including links to suppliers on the blog.
Richie made a heart-warming observation this week, he commented on the generous spirit and awesomeness of my art community. It got me thinking about how important it is to build your village, to have people that you can call on & friends that you can shamelessly chat to about art for hours! We are so lucky these days as there are so many options both in-person/online. For me though, nothing beats chatting to someone over a cup of tea, even a virtual tea :-). Before you even listen to this episode, have a think, is there someone you could reach out to. Go on, make it happen!
Do you ever find yourself tightening up as you paint? Overthinking and struggling to find your flow. This week I am sharing my tips for staying loose. From painting in my gym clothes to banning certain people from the studio, I've got a few strategies up my sleeve! This is a juicy podcast that I hope will encourage you to go bigger, play more and most importantly, have fun! Speaking of big, stay tuned until the end of the podcast for exciting news about upcoming retreats, workshops and classes.
There is no doubt about it, some painting days are hard. It's crushing to look at a painting at the end of a session, only to wish that you hadn't touched it at all. Then there are the days when you can't even get motivated to pick up a paintbrush. So how do you get out of a painting funk? Join me this week as I chat about my own experiences and share what has been helping me to get my painting mojo back!
This episode we are responding to listener questions. We answer a few quick ones and then settle in for a conversation about making your own art prints. Digitizing and printing your art is technical, time-consuming and requires a significant investment in equipment and materials. BUT it is also a fantastic way for getting your art out into the world and can open the door to exciting opportunities. Join us this week as we talk about the process, the pros and the cons of printing.
There's nothing quite like a trip away, to get you thinking and re-evaluating. That's just what happened when we visited artist and entrepreneur, Doulene Walker, in Bali last month (see last weeks podcast). The experience inspired us to think bigger and go ALL IN on running our business (and our home) together. Heads up, we talk about housework nearly as much as painting in this episode! It's an interesting conversation about shifting roles and new possibilities. Enjoy!
This week's podcast might be a short one but it is BIG in so many ways! We are with artist, Doulene Walker, and coming to you from beautiful Bali. Being brave is the theme this week and it is fitting as we have exciting news to share! If you have ever imagined taking a week away from the hustle and bustle to immerse yourself in a rich painting and cultural experience, you are going to want to listen in. Find Doulene Walker Art on Instagram or check out her website.
Growing an Instagram account is an art in itself. There's so much to master. Taking appealing photos, writing engaging captions, using helpful hashtags. The list is endless. This week we share our tips and strategies to help you approach Instagram with confidence and most importantly to enjoy it! We want you to get out there and make the most of this possibility filled platform.
As a creative business owner, there comes a point when you have to put in the work and get yourself organised. For some of us, this comes more easily than others. I know that I bumbled along for many years, holding information in my head and scribbling ideas on scraps of paper. I have always loved the feel and look of handwritten notebooks but the reality was, it wasn't working for me.
Earlier this year, I bought myself a new laptop. The first computer I have ever had, all of my own. With my shiny new laptop in hand, I began a switch that would later on become a force of power in my creative business. I switched over to online organisation.
And you know what. I haven’t looked back. In fact, I have become somewhat of a productivity tool junkie and today I am counting down my favourites.
