In this week's podcast episode, we'll explore the entrepreneurial spirit and the challenges of starting your own business. Kelly Baynes, owner and co-founder of The Lemon Quarters and Nurture Network, discusses her favourite projects and shares her advice on how to succeed in starting your own business.
I think as people, as business professionals, we often let perfection be the enemy. I think nothing's really more important than getting your ideas out there in front of the people who will be your potential customers, people who don't know you, basically, people who aren't family and genetically predisposed to be kind to you.
I think there's a tech mantra, is it fail, fail quickly, fail better. It comes from a Samuel Beckett quote, but reality really is that best teacher. We learn so much more from our mistakes, or the things that we don't do well, or the things we can improve on much more than any success we might have. Really, how can you improve if you don't start? Thomas Bedenk, Endava’s VP of Extended Reality, has joined us again on the Tech Reimagined Podcast for what turned out to be a very insightful conversation on the metaverse and its opportunities for businesses in the years to come. He believes the public’s growing appetite for virtual reality experiences that feed into the metaverse is mostly driven by the growth of the gaming industry and the increasing use of games as a social and exchange medium.
However, it's essential to distinguish the metaverse from the games industry and gaming as a whole. Virtual items in these games have a real economy, and virtual items can be as real as physical items to those who own and use them in the metaverse, which has the potential to transform business models and how companies interact with customers. How exactly? Find out in this episode and share your opinion @Endava on Linkedin.
Innovation is a strategic game with long-term results. To play it right, one must ask the right questions, and create the proper context and space to help people thrive. Join Bradley and Eoin Woods this week as they discuss a subject very important to him and Endava – innovation in technology. Delve a bit into how we foster innovation within our teams and what it means for everyone involved.
Bradley Howard: Eoin, today I really want to talk about how to incubate innovation. So what are the essential preconditions for novelty of cultures within organizations?
Eoin Woods: Thanks Bradley. It's a complicated question, isn't it? Because so many people talk about innovation and so many people say they've delivered innovation and yet sometimes it's quite hard to know what they mean. For me, innovation is, I think what you said in the introduction is real impactful change to the way the organizations either work or deliver the services or the products that they create. I think the most essential precondition for innovation within an organization is an acceptance of failure. I hear quite a lot of, we sometimes even get this with our clients who are, hear quite a lot of organizations talking about the need for innovation and how they want to innovate and then when they start talking to people about let's start doing some innovation they say, " How long will it take? How much will it cost, and what will I get?" And I always look at them slightly confused.
Well if it's innovation you won't know any of those things in the beginning. I'm afraid that's just development or business development or whatever it is. I think taking risks, I think being prepared to learn from failures and doing failures is a positive thing, which is much easier said than done especially when it's your money you're spending. I really do feel for senior managers who just feel that they're abandoning money to a black hole but they do have to let go and just see what happens. And I think the other precondition is the fact that innovation is actually done in the business.
The biggest anti pattern I see in innovation is a separate innovation center. You can always tell innovation centers because the people dress differently and they have totally non- standard IT hardware. If the organization is a window center, they will inevitably have max. If the main organization is a max center, they will inevitably have Linux machines and they go off and innovate in a bubble and then when they try and come back and apply that innovation, the organization kind of rejects the organism because it just doesn't fit with the way the organization works and its real needs.

Join us and Endava’s VP of Extended Reality, Thomas Bedenk, in this very first episode of 2023, where he highlights the recent advancements in virtual and extended reality, like AI-trained conversational models such as chatGPT. While chatbots have been around for decades, only recently have they become more prevalent with advancements in AI and language models. He believes that these advancements have the potential to revolutionize the way virtual worlds, user-generated content and large productions are created.
Thomas also raises ethical concerns, such as the potential for confusion between human and AI interactions in virtual reality, issues of identity, and copyright. He emphasizes that organizations must consider how they want to approach and adapt to this rapidly advancing technology. Have a listen and let us know your opinion @Endava on Linkedin.

Teamwork makes the dream work, that's for sure. So what exactly makes teams tick? What are the ingredients of a successful team? What can organisations do to better support highly proficient and functional teams, through hard times and lots of legacy code? Here with us to discuss this exciting and crucial subject and share her vast experience is Helen Pownall, Engineering Programme Director at SportRadar.
Are you curious to find out what a CTO does? Grab your ear buds and listen to Eoin Woods, Endava's CTO share a snapshot of his professional life and how the B2B tech landscape has been evolving in that past decades.
"From our perspective as suppliers, we're desperately trying to understand as much as we can about the client side, and that varies hugely by client. As you know, some clients share everything with us, some are very careful about what they share with us. And so we're always trying to fill in the gaps to understand what the client really needs as opposed to perhaps what we've been asked for in the last week. So it's a strange dance between the two, but it really is why we see again and again at Endava why clients who engage with us in a genuine partnership get so much more out of us than treating us as somebody that they have a contract with."

Our data footprint is increasing by the minute. But what happens with our personal information once we’ve shared it with different companies? Is it safe to share it? And if so, is it truly kept securely? Tune in to hear security enthusiast and expert Greg Van der Gaast share his thoughts on the subject. Greg: The bigger the chain gets, whether it's one company with just a sheer scale of factors and people and locations or smaller companies that are reliant on other companies where you get a chain of dependencies, the bigger it gets, the more difficult it is to actually protect data, especially when people are constantly pushing to drive value out of data. Data science is an incredible thing and we use it to drive business. We try to find ways of making money out of data. And every day we use Google, we do searches. We watch videos. We don't have to pay for any of this stuff, and yet people are making a killing off of it. It's like we're getting free stuff and yet someone's earning money off giving it to us. It's only when you do that, the expression that if you're not paying for it, you are the product. And you have to be aware of that. You are the product. You're selling a part of yourself to get this service, to get this convenience. And that's just the equation. There's no way around it. And that's it.
Whilst the hype around AI is justifiable the reality around how it’s being used in banking and capital markets looks a lot less exciting and more down to earth. Tune in and find out more in this insightful episode. Where can AI help banks and traders? How is AI being used nowadays and where is the industry heading? Will AI determine the unsafe usage of unstructured data? Listen to Bradley Howard and seasoned experts Stephane Malrait MD Global Head of Market Structure and Innovation for Financial Markets at ING and Pierre Kovacs, Industry Consultant Banking and Capital Markets take a closer look at how AI is shaping the banking industry. “…it's still under the supervision of a trader on the desk. So all the automations that we do there is people monitoring it in real time. The machine is never alone to make those decision and to manage. There is always supervision on top of it. So I think we put a lot of safeguards to make sure it doesn't go crazy. And even the regulator, as I say, want to make sure that all the algorithms that we write are tested, validated review approved by the compliance officer, the risk manager, et cetera. So there is a algo framework model that is used by every bank and validated by regulators to be able to put those barriers. And I think it's needed. And it fair that those barrier exists to make sure the system stay resilient and safe for clients.” – Stephane Malrait
"The one thing that blockchain really does, it removes friction from the industry. And when I talk about friction, I'm talking about, there is one version of the truth that exists there. So we don't have reconciliations, which is a huge part of what we do in financial services. We are always reconciling what we know against another party. And now there are other ways of doing that, but blockchain does it in a way which is clean, which is sophisticated. And as Stephan does, it allows us to do it in real time, removing risk.
The thing that I really get excited about blockchain, which I think is the benefit and also one of the drawbacks about it, is the excitement and the ideas that people have about what can be done there. I think it's forcing us to, encouraging us to think in new ways, think about what the things are we could do with technology. I think the drawback about that is a lot of people get over excited about it and run off down rabbit holes around things which don't actually add benefit to what we're doing." - Wynn Davies, EVP, US Finance Sector, Endava
Listen to the full episode here for an in-depth look into how blockchain is influencing the banking industry. Bradley Howard and seasoned experts Stephane Malrait and Wynn Davies take a deep dive into the real and projected benefits of blockchain, what are some of the most exciting DLT implementations and what’s in store for the future of the market. Got questions? We’re curious to hear them: https://www.linkedin.com/company/endava/ [email protected]
Bradley Howard: Do you always start with a new technology and see how you can use it? Or sometimes do you look at challenges within the business and think, "Oh we can solve that using X, Y and Z," which doesn't always need to be the latest technology?
Stephane Malrait: It's a very good question and I think it's a mix of both to be honest.
If the business is not aware of what is available to them as new type of technology, you will never move. A good example is when the iPhone came out. Everybody was on Blackberry and we were very happy to be on the Blackberry phone. They didn't know they needed to change but then a new tech arrive and everybody jumped to that new tech because there were a lot more functionalities in this new type of solution.
And I think here it's the same. It's the case that sometimes the demand comes from the business, system is too slow or too outdated and we need to change, and then we push to make some automation or change the technology, but other time is the other way around, and we find technology company or FinTech company, we have very good solution and we say, " Oh, it can help us to dramatically improve the way we do business so we should integrate with them." A good example will be natural language processing. In NLP, we have a lot of text, we have a lot of data, and we didn't know we could do a lot more with that type of information until we discovered there are NLP solutions out there who can help to get more than translating, unformatted data to formatted data point based on the text or the chat that we have, and then using this data to improve the customer experience. So this is more technology led than business led, but at the end, the result is the same, you have an improvement that you want to have. Listen to the rest of this insightful conversation between Stephane Malrait MD Global Head of Market Structure and Innovation for Financial Markets at ING, Toby Dixon, Delivery Director, FS, Banking & Capital Markets and Bradley Howard, Dive deeper into what builds technology innovation in the banking and capital markets arena as two seasoned professionals talk through what trends are currently shaping the industry and some of the lessons they learned in the technology innovation programs they were a part of from a dual perspective: ING - a bank's and a service partners.
