Ciarán Hinds joins the cast of The Rings of Power, bringing with him hope for those of us who want the Stranger to be a Blue Wizard. But the Stranger wants to be good, whereas Hinds' Wizard appears to be anything but, foreshadowing a clash between the former friends. What version, or versions, of Tolkien's lore might Amazon be drawing from? Michael smells tragedy on the horizon.

Today I bring you the biggest scoop ever - I know how the The Rings of Power series will end, down to the last shot and the last line! This ending was shared with me by the highest authority of all, so today's ramblings are touched by the divine. Shoot me an email to let me know what you think!
FYI, eagle-eared listeners will notice that at the end of this episode I misquoted the text of Lord of the Rings in an embarrassing face-palm. Mea culpa. Y'all know what I meant.

Amazon goes three for three and hits another home run with it's final trailer for Season 2 of The Rings of Power. We get the sounds of Cirdan, a potential Adar and Galadriel team up, and Charles Edwards (Celebrimbor) showing us what acting is all about.
FYI, I accidentally didn't plug in my microphone, so the audio is a little lower quality than usual today, but there's no way I'm setting my brain on fire again to re-record my thoughts.

This year's theme is Travel and Adventure, and we both took the opportunity to fondly reminisce about our childhood travels. We hope you spent the day curled up with your favorite Tolkien tale!

"He had fared often abroad, as a leader in the wars that the Númenóreans made then in the coastlands of Middle-earth, seeking to extend their dominion over Men; and thus he had won great renown as a captain both by land and by sea."
We do a deep dive into Pharazon's backstory in the books, and compare it to the recent interview with actor Trystan Gravelle published in comicbook.com. Then, we answer the age old question: Do Númenórean kings have beards? And if not, why were they portrayed with facial hair in Jackson's trilogy and now again in the Rings of Power?

"Galadriel, the only woman of the Noldor to stand that day tall and valiant among the contending princes, was eager to be gone. No oaths she swore, but the words of Fëanor concerning Middle-earth had kindled in her heart, for she yearned to see the wide unguarded lands and to rule there a realm at her own will"
With just a few weeks before the release of The Rings of Power, new teasers, posters, and articles are coming out every day. Michael and Jen go through the latest, and explore the importance of Finrod to Galadriel's backstory.

Sifting through Tolkien's legendarium can be overwhelming for the new fan. Which books should you read, and in what order? What about the different drafts of the Silmarillion? The essays in the History of Middle Earth? How do we separate canon from cannot? (oof). Is "canon" even a useful concept? Joining us to help make sense of it all is Dan from Voice of Geekdom. This is a must-listen episode for the new fan, and also has plenty for the experienced Tolkienist.

"Yet this is held true by the wise of Eressëa, that all those of the Quendi who came into the hands of Melkor, ere Utumno was broken, were put there in prison, and by slow arts of cruelty were corrupted and enslaved; and thus did Melkor breed the hideous race of the Orcs in envy and mockery of the Elves, of whom they were afterwards the bitterest foes."
IGN recently published an article giving us our first look at the Orcs in The Rings of Power, and they look...not friendly. Benjamin Bassett and Shridar Bhagavathula from the Reading Tolkien Podcast joined us to discuss the thematic purpose of orcs in Tolkien's legendarium, and their devilish design in the Amazon series.

Today it's just the OG's, and we're covering the Flight to the Fords sequence in 1:14:44-1:24:00 of The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition). Frodo's feeling a little woozy, so our favorite she-elf tries to take him on a quick horse ride to the nearest pharmacy when they are interrupted by nine Black Riders. This may be a short sequence, but there's a lot to unpack. Be sure to stick around for the Grey Havens. We made a discovery that fans of Tolkien (and Nickel Creek) are sure to enjoy.

"I know we are going to take a very long road, into darkness; but I know I can’t turn back. It isn’t to see Elves now, nor dragons, nor mountains, that I want - I don’t rightly know what I want: but I have something to do before the end, and it lies ahead, not in the Shire. I must see it through, sir, if you understand me."
What does Amazon's move from New Zealand to UK mean for the show, and for all of our little hearts quietly breaking that we won't see New Zealand's beautiful scenery in future seasons? And the main event: we discuss our approach to analyzing cinematic adaptations of literary works.

"In seven hours the glory of each tree waxed to full and waned again to naught; and each awoke once more to life an hour before the other ceased to shine. Thus in Valinor twice every day there came a gentle hour of softer light when both trees were faint and their gold and silver beams were mingled."
Amazon finally gives us an official release date, along with their first official teaser image featuring...GASP...the two trees of Valinor! We also talk about the big spy report recently released by TheOneRing.net, and Fellowship of Fans' report that Amazon's Numenor will feature different guilds. So much news we devoted the entire episode to it.

"But we need not assent. If we love Numenor also, let us enjoy it before they ruin it. We also are daughters of the great, and we have wills and courage of our own"
Having wrapped up the finished portion of Aldarion and Erendis: The Mariner's Wife, we now look back at the story and consider what it has to say about feminism, gender roles, and marriage, and discuss how Amazon might approach these concepts in their upcoming series. Helping us navigate these important issues is our first ever guest, brilliant author, and Michael's older sister, Heidi Rolland-Unruh.

"I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all of the ages of this world alone."
This week, Michael and Jen spill some hot copyright tea, and then wrap up the finished portion of Aldarion and Erendis: The Mariner's Wife. Our tale finally reaches a crescendo, as the lovers are permanently torn asunder. Join us as we peel back the layers of this story, and explore how it ties into Tolkien's larger narrative. Stay tuned after the show for another delightful installment of our brand new segment: "What are kids Tolkien about?"

“ 'If Helm dislikes a crooked staff that is thrust on him, he breaks it. So!' With that, he smote Freca with such a blow with his first that he fell back stunned, and died soon after."
We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you this special announcement: a new feature film set in Middle-Earth is in the works! New Line and Warner Bros. surprised everyone yesterday with an announcement that they are planning a full length anime adaptation of Rohan's war with the Dunlendings, set around 250 years before the events of Lord of the Rings. This story is found in the appendices to the Return of the King, and features the legendary Helm Hammerhand. Join us as we talk about this exciting news.

Special Thanks to Anuj Agarwal and Feedspot for the shoutout! We are one of the top 15 #LOTR podcasts to listen to in 2021.
“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”
We asked, and the people have spoken. Today on Watch Party, we’re taking a break from The Mariner’s Wife to do a deep dive into one of the main characters we will undoubtedly see in #LOTRonPrime - Celebrimbor! Often given a bad rap due to his role making the Rings of Power, we explain that he was just trying to preserve the good old days and Make Middle-Earth Great Again! We are also excited to introduce a couple of new segments: the "One Breath Summary," where we risk our lives trying to summarize Tolkien in one breath, and "What Kids Are Tolkien About," where we feature the always adorable and sometimes surprisingly wise musings small children have about Tolkien. As you can tell, we're having fun with this one.

“'Then let Spring and summer now begin!’ He said. 'And let not winter return,' said Erendis.”
Today on Watch Party we talk about the show's newest director, and the fattest budget in the history of television. Then, back to Aldarian and Erendis, where our star crossed lovers finally tie the knot. But, it may not be the happily ever after we were hoping for.

“Such gifts as come from the Valar, and through them from The One, are to be loved for themselves now, and in all nows. They are not given for barter, for more or for better. The Edain remain mortal men, Aldarion, great though they may be. We cannot dwell in the time that is to come, lest we lose our now for a phantom of our own design.”
On today’s pod, we discuss a possible timeline for the Amazon show premier thanks to reporting from Fellowship of Fans, and exciting news about one of our leading ladies. We even weigh in on some modern day Royal drama! Then it's all aboard the Palarran as we navigate the rough waters of Aldarion and Erendis: The Mariner’s Wife, from the Unfinished Tales. Will our lovers sink or swim? Find out now on Watch Party: LoTR on Prime.

"Far above the Ephel Dúath in the West the night-sky was still dim and pale. There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
Today on Watch Party, we talk about whether Orlando Bloom is actually Legolas in real life, a new director, new casting news that suggests we may get wizards after all, and bad news for Crowe fans. Then, we continue our discussion of Aldarion and Erendis: The Mariner’s Wife, from the Unfinished Tales. This love story is just heating up, so grab your copy of the book and get ready for stormy skies and rough winds on the high sea!

Happy Tolkien Reading Day! Today is March 25th, the day that the one ring was destroyed, Barad-dur fell, and Sauron was defeated. We want to commemorate this wonderful holiday by reading a couple of our favorite passages of hope and courage. Whatever is happening in your life during these difficult times, try to take a moment to read a few lines from your favorite Tolkien text and find solace in the hope and courage you find there. Remember, "Aure entuluva! Day shall come again!"

“We also are daughters of the great, and we have wills and courage of our own. Therefore do not bend, Ancalime. Once bend a little , and they will bend you further until you are bowed down. Sink your roots into the rock, and face the wind, though it blow away all your leaves.”
On today’s pod, we've got warlords, a new director, rumblings about production problems, and some tasty tasty Crowe. And then we start our long journey into the only detailed narrative Tolkien ever wrote (though never finished) about the Second Age: Aldarion and Erendis: The Mariner's Wife. We will be taking our time with this beautiful and complex narrative, where Tolkien explores themes of passion, obsession, pride, and the complexity of marital relations. Will this story be featured in an early season of the Amazon Prime series?

“It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.”
On today’s pod we’re going to bring you up to speed on the latest rumors about the show and Amazon’s marketing efforts, some drama in the Tolkien fandom, and some rampant speculation about which female directors we think might come on board for LOTRonPrime. And then our main topic: will Amazon introduce the enigmatic and mysterious Blue Wizards in the show?! It's a juicy one, so grab some popcorn and a flagon of Beorn's honey mead!

"You don't really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit? You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!”
This week on Watch Party, we wrap up our scene by scene review of the 1977 Rankin/Bass animated adaptation of The Hobbit. We pick things back up when Bilbo and the Dwarves reunite after escaping the Goblin tunnels (with Bilbo finding a certain golden ring along the way). From the depths of Mirkwood to Smaug's golden litter box (meeow) in the Lonely Mountain, we unpack and dissect every aspect of the film, and give you our hottest takes along the way!

"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
Today is our first true watch party! We start with the Rankin/Bass 1977 animated adaption of The Hobbit, a real gem featuring Tolkien's original songs set to a folksy soundtrack, psychedelic effects, and unusual animation and design choices. In this episode, we talk through the the first half of the film, scene by scene, ending with Riddles in the Dark. The Rankin/Bass adaptation is sometimes funny, sometimes silly, and sometimes just right, but no matter your take it makes one thing clear: The Hobbit is The Greatest Adventure!

"Let the Lord of the Black Land come forth! Justice shall be done upon him. For wrongfully he has made war upon Gondor and wrested its lands. Therefore the King of Gondor demands that he should atone for his evils, and depart then for ever.”
Today we continue our conversation about our hopes and dreams for Amazon's new Lord of the Rings series, and the characters we most hope to see. We already know about a certain golden-haired elf Queen - will we also get to see our favorite elf-lord twinning with the King of Numenor? Maybe some angry trees throwin' bows with Sauron? Will Amazon respect Tolkien's love of language? We wants it, we needs it, my precious! All this, and more on episode 2 of Watch Party: Lord of the Rings on Prime!

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."
In this inaugural episode of Watch Party: LOTR On Prime, we are stepping onto the road and getting swept off to Middle Earth. Join our fellowship as we start our adventure, and rediscover Tolkien's magical world in anticipation of Amazon's big budget adaptation of the Second Age! Jen talks about the production details confirmed to date, Michael summarizes the events of the Second Age, and then we break down the official show synopsis recently dropped by Amazon point by point.
